Can i remove clockwork? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The reason really isn't important, I was just wondering if clockwork could be removed. I didn't have the "erase recovery" box checked when i flashed it, so i feel like clockwork is just sitting on top of the stock recovery.
If i'm wrong, let me know. Otherwise tell me how to delete clockwork. Thanks!

Just flash the stock recovery from hboot or adb push it. It can be found in the development section or by searching around Google.

That's not the answer to the question they are looking for.
to the {OP}. you need a recovery image rather stock or Clockwork. If it were me i wouldn't trust deleting the clockwork because if it did erase the recovery the chance of bricking the phone goes up.
I would however recommend flashing the stock image back to the phone or flashing Clockwork ROM recovery.

There is only one physical place for the recovery to be - the recovery partition.
Only one recovery image can occupy that partition.
If you flashed Clockworkmod - you erased the stock recovery.
If you want the stock recovery - you can find it in Developers forum in several bundles and flash it from ROM manager. When flashed, it erases Clockworkmod.
"Removing recovery" is just erasing recovery partition, leaving you without recovery of any kind. And it doesn't have anything to do with bricking, whatsoever. It just isn't smart.

That's not the answer to the question they are looking for.

Hey neidlinger, your wisdom shows once more. I am not even sure what the first part of your answer means. Furthermore, you tell the previous poster that he/she did not give the right answer, then proceed to duplicate one of the recommendations. Brilliant. Did you find that answer on the internet somewhere?
To the OP, I would use the advice given by Jack_R1 or camalus, because it is correct.

I'm not the one flamming or calling people names....
Who is the one breaking the rules and getting away with it.????

Ok, I won't pick on you or call you names neidlinger...

Edit: reading>me, sorry for wasting bandwidth.

I don't see anyone flaming anyone. Kmdub was simply calling out neidlinger on the ineffectiveness of his comment to answer the op's question. That should be acceptable, I think?
It's starting to get ridiculous here with people trying to label everything as flaming. Adults can disagree (especially when in attempt to point someone to better answer).

There is another thread on here where i was trying to have a civil conversation with the Kmdub and he/she completely went of the deep end with the flamming. It's on a different thread. I can take a slap on the hand when i've done something wrong. But when some jumps in with both feet like they've done in previous post. I am a little gun shy.
I never claim to be a Android or Linux guru, and i'm still learning as i go alone. Showing some the correct way, and flamming are two totally different things. But some people, on forums across the world, just do not understand that.

Dang guys stop bumping my thread - the answer has been given. give it a rest already

Wow. This is something else. Lmao.

He's exactly right... because this subforum is just starting up, everything needs to be in its appropriate section. It will make everthing easier when this starts to pick up and you need to go back and find something. No one who wants to flash a custom rom wants to read questions about apps. So no hatin involved, lets just put stuff in the appropriate spots

yes i understand that but to the op you really didnt help at all thats what i mean im not saying your wrong at all im just saying help the guy even though he posted in the wrong spot and then ask him to move it cause hes in the wrong section thats all
honestly i was going under the assumtion that odin was some program you had to use to flash roms or something along those lines. How would i go about transfering it to the general section?
none of you are helping at all. if you don't have anything helpful at all to contribute then don't say anything at all. saying stuff like this doesn't belong here isn't helpful at all and all it does is clutter the thread. if it needs to be moved then let a mod decide on that.
as for answering the op's question...
Odin is the program you use to flash phones.
'Odin Multi Downloader v3.95.exe' is used to flash the Samsung Galaxy. It's usually included in firmware packs.
Gunman is trying to help... Ppl need to read the rules and follow them before posting... A simple google search would have answered his question.. I already posted a "read before posting" thread.. Its all the way at the bottom bc ppl are posting incorrectly and in the wrong place

when you say firm ware like when you flash new kernals/roms or updating hardware like the radio and such? or do you mean the version of android itself? also do you have to use odin or can you just get a .zip of the firm ware/rom then flash it in recovery mode?
Id say 99.999% of the time no one mods the hardware, the roms are essentially like OS's, and firmware is like a bios, it translates what the rom wants us to do into how the hardware is going to do it.
Yes I realize this is not a perfect analogy, and no offense to the OP, this is just a basic rundown for anyone starting out.

Odin is a tool used for downloading new rom's or software to the phone. you need to put the phone into download mode to get odin to recognize it. Be very careful as to how you use this software, it can brick your phone if you mess up and don't do it right.

when i turn my phone on....

what does it mean whn it jus shows a phone, a triangle in the middle, and a computer...it doesnt even boot to clockwork or the samsung screen? can this b fixed? this started after odin failed on me

Sounds like you were trying to revert back to stock. I assume the stuff you are talking about is yellow. If so try to use odin again.
The obvious question to me is, did you try Odin again after it failed? Logic would suggest that if Odin failed I'd have to do it again.

It is because of your tar file on odin.it was two small.try re odin ing it with a tar file of 255 mb or something like that.happened to me before too when I was a super noob but fear not you'll eventually become less of a noob too as time passes

Using google first saves you time because its an immediate response, it saves everyone else time having to an a simple question, and it saves our forums from being cluttered. I said nothing rude and I would have answered his question had it not already been answered (which I highlighted with my quote and saying "this"). If you want to respond to my adult advice and response by acting childish, that is your prerogative but I will continue to post help to those who made an effort to get it.
thats i guess meh cool but a simple reply/explaination would have been "flash odin again" instead of repeating the long rant over and over again too. maybe its jus best to leave this place altogether

Maybe before voiding your warranty and messing with your $500 phone you should do some research and be prepared for the plethora of things that can go wrong.

I believe his point was, however, that before one starts an endeavor that can break a piece of $500 hardware one should generally make sure they understand all of the possible outcomes and how to deal with them which he pointed out that you didn't. He could have said it in a more polite manner but he was correct.
I have ben to this screen when my odin got interupted. Pull the battery for a couple minutes. Hold down the one key on the keyboard and then power on while holding it. This puts you in download mode. Odin back to stock.

It appears I have one thanks or maybe I cant count. More than likely since I dont cry about wanting thanks that could be it. The purpose of a forum is to get help. Regardless if the answer could be found on google the forum would not need to exist. I am on one forum and it is the most mature forum there is. I see question repeated over and over again. Even in this case people still answer it like it was asked the first time. If all forums were like that, forums would be a much better place.

I do not understand why it is difficult to simply search for an answer. If you cannot find the answer, then post and people will help. As I've stated I do very often provide detailed explanations to people even to those who had not searched for the answer however I always add that in the future they should seek out the answer on their own first. His question had been answered and as such I stated that he should try and figure things out on his own. I have never begged for a "Thanks" and I could care less about them but I have spent hours of my time helping others fix issues and there are many people who can attest to that. Leatherneck has done the same, in fact he has even helped me a few times that I can think of in recent history. On the other hand, the only posts I've seen from you are complaints about other users or asking other users for help. The point of these forums is to allow a place for developers to gather and together fix and hack away at new phones and such, not to aid in every little personal disaster. That is why it is a FORUM RULE to search. A rule for which violators can receive infringements or even bans. By telling people to search, I am not telling them to shut up I am showing people how to be an active member of this community and if you cannot grasp that then your place here is very limited.

[GUIDE] How to fix a softbrick

Your phone softbricked, Here is how to fix it!
1. if you are on 1.8.3, download the following file
http://www.mediafire.com/?xm487o3ljjhdmh7 (thank unknown_ for it)
2. creat a folder and put the file in it.
3 download fastboot from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138092
4. put fastboot on the same folder you created on step 2
4.1 enter fastboot on your phone
(reboot your phone while holding volume down, when fastboot appear on screen press up)
4.2 open a console in that folder (windows users hold left shift and right click, the click on the pull up menu on start command right here)
6 then type. fastboot flash boot CG56.img
7 for good messure type fastboot -w (this will whipe your data, sometimes it wont boot your phone unless you wipe data)
8. fastboot reboot
if you are on 2.3.4 you can find the boot.img in the same thread as fastboot.
Thanks for this, I know a few will need it.
Thanks for fixing this kholk, I knew you could do it!

Nope not attempting to Troll at all, I feel his title is though. I don't know kholk at all but he seems to know his stuff especially when it comes to the Tegra2 platform. He does seem to be poor at is full instructions or descriptions but it is also listed as version 0.1, to me thats not even Beta yet. So although it may not work right now for all we know at this point there could be a simple fix.
My point was simply don't attack someone because you rushed in to something without fully understanding or with the idea that it will work 100% when no claim was made to that. Offering to help others who made the same mistake is fine & admirable but does it have to come with sarcasm and veiled insults?

Holy hell guys.... Anyone who's already tried to flash this without a FULL understanding of what it is/does - and HOW to correctly install it deserves the soft-brick they got... You chose to flash something untested and unverified. Live with the consequences! Its funny to sit back and watch people JUMP and claw at this stuff to be the first person to have it and get it working - then piss and moan when something doesnt work. I find it hilarious actually lol. The only person to blame is yourself for flashing blindly

I was probably the 2nd person to flash this... I didn't piss & moan.. I was understandably anxious when my phone soft bricked, but I fully understood the risk. But someone had to be the first, someone had to test it... I didn't go bashing Kholk on his own thread, I asked questions of what to do, and thanked the one who directed me to the CG56.img file. After that I again questioned to see if anyone had successfully flashed the kernel. I have since requested a moderator temporarily close the thread until the Dev can update and/or correct the OP, or answer questions posted on his thread.
How many views does it take for thread to be locked? (Hint: it's over 9000)
The download link is down, Can someone kindly post another.

Two questions from a complete idiot (me) if you please.
1. What is Soft Brick? I mean, what is the state of phone called Soft Brick?
I understand the Hard Brick (RIP state) is the phone totally unbootable.
2. The above procedure works only for a unlocked boot loader or with the locked also?

There should be CLEAR instructions in the OP of the Blackrose thread. This **** is ridiculous.
What do I need? Do I need the Android SDK? If I do, can I install it on a seperate drive? I don't need ****e clogging up my SSD. No one has stated I need the SDK, hence why I haven't bothered with it. If it is needed, then my point about none of it being CLEAR is reinforced.
Been trying to figure this **** out for hours. Seen countless numbers of posts with people trying to give instructions. I try these things to find that I have missed something because I can't complete a step or some other problem.
And did I mention how helpful the installation video was in the OP? Really good stuff, that.
Any actual help will be appreciated. Gonna jump off the nearest cliff if someone suggests to read through the thread again. Which seems to be the only thing that people like to tell others in these "help" threads.
Cheers.

Hours? When I got my first smartphone many years ago, I spend months lurking around this site trying to take in as much knowledge as I could before even attempting to flash anything. Should be? Really? Says who? Take your entitlement straight to the door. People here are doing things for free and sharing their knowledge... and you are demanding to be spoon-fed it.
Do you know what the SDK is? If not, maybe you should read up on what it is and why you would need it.
No, you do not need the SDK installed. You do need the drivers for your device installed though, both for fastboot and normal mode.
Hours? When I got my first smartphone many years ago, I spend months lurking around this site trying to take in as much knowledge as I could before even attempting to flash anything. I wanted to make sure that I understood everything I was doing before doing it -- I did not want to blindly follow someone's step by step.
You're lucky you even got a video.

This is much more helpful. My apologies.
If I were the one creating these sorts of things for others (and myself,) I'd very much like it to be as simple as possible for the end-user. I'd like as much support as possible and I would be isolating the majority by making it more difficult than it could be. I shouldn't need a developer's knowledge to be able to take advantage of a developer's work.
I'm sure I just missed something simple. It wasn't the drivers. After I installed them and tried the Blackrose exe again, it stops at "waiting for device." Read through some of the thread, not understanding half of it, as you would expect, and didn't come across anything that could have helped me with my problem.
Any ideas?

I think what you posted above is where the problem is. People here are not creating things here for others. They are developing something, and sharing it with others.
And I guess, you didn't read the comment in the link in my previous post. Otherwise, it probably would have been more clear.
I'm not trying to insult. On the contrary, I am trying to help you figure it out, not have someone figure it out for you, in the spirit of xda-developers, not xda-support-desk.

It's funny, but I remember more than one individual having the same issue in the Blackrose thread. And I remember mentioning to at least one individual that they could try to flash Blackrose manually, instead of using the installer. But maybe you missed that. Or did you not read the entire thread?

lol, seriously?
There are 956 posts in the Blackrose thread alone. Expecting someone to read EVERY single post and absorb all of that information at one time is a bit proposterous. I'd bet it'd take a good 3-4 hours to just read that single thread.
I'm not saying we should spoon feed the newbs (especially the ones who can't follow simple instructions, like not posting a question in a forum with a big sticky at the top that explicitly says "WARNING - DO *NOT* POST QUESTIONS IN THIS FORUM - only tips/info/etc."), but at what point do we say... hey, this is how you do it, these 900 posts don't matter, or are outdated, or are duplicate questions...

I WAS being serious. Maybe it's just me, but I like learning, and I like helping those who like to learn. And don't tell me it's because people don't have time to read them...I work 60-70 hours a week, take post-graduate classes, raise 3 kids (which includes going to soccer games, homework, skating and dance lessons), and I still have time to read some threads, write up some guides, and help others.
If I want to flash something, I read the entire thread, so I learn from others' mistakes. When I had my Nexus One and I wanted Blackrose, I read every post in that Blackrose thread, up until I replaced the N1. I guess I have a hard time understanding someone who doesn't, and then complains that the guides should be better, and saying "this $%!& is ridiculous".
One of the things people need to develop skills for, if they're doing anything technical, is SEARCH. It helps a lot to filter out the crap, because it's indeed impossible or at least unreal to read threads of 300+ replies. But searching helps. Noobs should start working on their google-fu.
I agree that Blackrose thread isn't the simplest around. But just think - it's not more and not less, but bootloader replacement! The very thing that noobs SHOULD NOT TOUCH until they understand what they're doing.
So, the first response should be - if you don't understand how to do something, STAY AWAY UNTIL YOU DO. And indeed, go vent somewhere else. This isn't a forum for pleasing users.

So let me get this straight: You are looking for help (despite not having read the Blackrose thread), I give you two suggestions (check you driver install and flash the modified hboot manually, both are in the Blackrose thread), and you are still flippant and not happy?

[Q] Recovery on MF3

EDIT: Problem Resolved
Hello, after reading for hours, I now realize that I was wrong. Not totally new to rooting, etc. but this one caught me off guard. I updated to the latest MF3 OTA from ATT.
My problem is I tried to install TWRP from the goo manager, and now the recovery doesn't work on the phone at all. For the longest time it just kept rebooting the phone endlessly, and I could make it get into download mode.
I managed to get the phone to boot up by flashing the stock rom with odin in the bootloader section (did this by accident trying to recover the phone), and then went into download mode, and clicked cancel. It booted up fine.
If I try to enter recovery at all, it goes back into the endless boot cycle till I do some playing around with odin.
How to do I get the normal recovery working again? I would like to factory reset this and sell it for a GPE phone.
Thank you for your time.
Is there a downloadable mf3 ROM out there I can use to flash it with Odin?

Both of you should do a lot more reading before you mess with your phones. There are good stickies in the general forum which would be good starting points. If you had read them you might not be posting here now.

Not to be a stickler but it's the same person.
And not to be disrespectful, but the galaxyroot website says installing a custom recovery is fine but it must be rooted first - if not rooted go here - you go here and it shows the mf3 root method. Never said much else about it. I rarely use XDA to ask for information. The post always turns into a flame war with people who are extremely disrespectful. To me this forum is extremely mixed up with post, and other times the information isn't clear. I agree totally that I made the mistake, but I admit to my failure and now I'm trying to learn from it. I'll never understand why the people on this forum and I mean especially this forum love to bash others.

The reason people are annoyed is because people are constantly coming here with little knowledge, ignoring all the useful guides stickied at the top of the forums to try and help these exact same people, then rushing into an advanced procedure without a proper idea of what they're doing. Then they make a brand new thread to ask a question/beg for help, when it's already been answered 100 times, rather than searching for the answer first.
It's not something to get upset about because it's going to keep happening no matter what...but it is laughably annoying.
Anyways, I don't know what website galaxyroot is, but you need to get your info/guides/procedures/research right here at XDA...not at some random website with crappy information. That was your first mistake.

Absolutely!
And I might add...
Asking questions (regardless of how many times they have already been asked) is NOT learning. Learning IS searching and reading available information, no matter how much time it takes, until a person has complete knowledge about their device and what it is they are going to be doing to it. It is called "being responsible for your own actions":. People that keep asking the same questions over and over again are NOT trying to learn anything. They are just trying to get someone else that usually did take the time necessary to learn about their phone to get them out of a situation that they got themselves into while putting a minimum of their own effort into it. Just so they can go back and screw something up again.
People who ask valid questions AFTER they have searched, read, and learned are generally handled in a very friendly manner because they have displayed a willingness to actually learn about what they are doing. I've already said this in several other posts but it comes down to people that do things correctly versus people that are lazy, have a sense of entitlement, or feel as if their time is more valuable than others...it's just that simple.

The funny thing is: often the people who are accused of being mean/rude/unfriendly are people who spend an exceptional amount of time, each and every day, helping people in these forums! It's FREE tech support. You get "mean" when you deserve it and you are not entitled to complain about it, in my opinion.

He had like 7 post...I'm not thinking so.
Nevertheless people will ask everyday a question that has already been answered. If somebody is going to call me stupid along with other names I don't want their help, I'll eventually figure it out myself. I was just hoping to significantly speed up the process by asking a question I didn't see asked yet on the forum. (Or if it was I didn't see it and yes I did look)

I'm not quite understanding you. Instead of "checking another forum out to see if we have any solutions as of yet", why didn't you take the time to read what has been posted about it in this forum (as suggested)? People (here) even gave you a screenshot and instructions on how to find the EXACT links that would have helped. Was that not enough? I think you are being difficult just to be difficult...or do you really think that you shouldn't have to take the time to research and learn about something even when the links are handed to you? Maybe you should take a little of YOUR time to read and learn a little bit instead of expecting people to take THEIR time to answer your questions that have already been answered multiple times elsewhere, especially when people are nice enough to show you the way. What is your definition of "help"?
You don't have to answer any of this if you don't want to, I actually rather you didn't.

I'm not even going to fight with you. I'd suggest sticking on topic. Anyways I did thank those that helped so don't complain at me for not reading something you know about.
Nevertheless my recovery is working again now. Something that XDA doesn't have posted on it (at least for the mf3). Maybe I could be more of a nerd and explain things in more detail like I should have. I have been pretty sick these last few weeks. I'm a disabled veteran and have quite a lot of problems. You don't freaking know me. Don't tell me what I'm trying to be. Just because I'm not as familiar with this forum like you doesn't mean I didn't freaking try.
I am TRUELY sorry for the inconvenience I have put you through. I won't ask anymore questions here again. I'll go where I should have in the first place.
P.S. - read ALL my post before you decide to play God and tell me what I am. A post I referee to earlier was deleted so it kinda makes me look like a you know what.
Please don't try to bash me here anymore as I really never meant to offend anyone here. Its just really depressing to me that just because you found something and I didn't I'm the idiot.

Wow - 1 question and 2 pages of beating this poor guy senseless.
No disrespect but you guys/gals with 1000+ posts, try to remember when you where single digit posts.
Some people dont "haunt" this forum day and night and know "common" issues/symptoms and their fixes.
I see lots of threads with what appear to be valid questions and just about all say "this has been covered - do some research".
I hope I never go to a Doctor and say "I dont feel well, my nose is running and feel itchy" and they respond "this has been covered - do some research".
Again no disrespect but WOW!!!!

If you find a doctor who provides around the clock support for free, let me know!
If that doctor posts the answers to most of your ailments right on the door when you walk in with a big READ THIS FIRST sign...and you walk right past it and ask him a question that's on the door, do you think that might get annoying?
Ok, I'm tired of this analogy!
