I would say u need to be a bit careful wid blackrose. Cos its not as easy like flashing a rom. I would recommend you to go thru the blackrose thread carefully to make things clear. If u get any doubts u can ask it and clear things out

There should be CLEAR instructions in the OP of the Blackrose thread. This **** is ridiculous.
What do I need? Do I need the Android SDK? If I do, can I install it on a seperate drive? I don't need ****e clogging up my SSD. No one has stated I need the SDK, hence why I haven't bothered with it. If it is needed, then my point about none of it being CLEAR is reinforced.
Been trying to figure this **** out for hours. Seen countless numbers of posts with people trying to give instructions. I try these things to find that I have missed something because I can't complete a step or some other problem.
And did I mention how helpful the installation video was in the OP? Really good stuff, that.
Any actual help will be appreciated. Gonna jump off the nearest cliff if someone suggests to read through the thread again. Which seems to be the only thing that people like to tell others in these "help" threads.
Cheers.

I think you will get an earful from other members after they read your post. Calm down and don't vent your anger on this portal. If the instructions from the OP are not clear, just ask and we will help you.

Do you know what the SDK is? If not, maybe you should read up on what it is and why you would need it.
No, you do not need the SDK installed. You do need the drivers for your device installed though, both for fastboot and normal mode.

Hours? When I got my first smartphone many years ago, I spend months lurking around this site trying to take in as much knowledge as I could before even attempting to flash anything. I wanted to make sure that I understood everything I was doing before doing it -- I did not want to blindly follow someone's step by step.

This is much more helpful. My apologies.
If I were the one creating these sorts of things for others (and myself,) I'd very much like it to be as simple as possible for the end-user. I'd like as much support as possible and I would be isolating the majority by making it more difficult than it could be. I shouldn't need a developer's knowledge to be able to take advantage of a developer's work.
I'm sure I just missed something simple. It wasn't the drivers. After I installed them and tried the Blackrose exe again, it stops at "waiting for device." Read through some of the thread, not understanding half of it, as you would expect, and didn't come across anything that could have helped me with my problem.
Any ideas?

I think what you posted above is where the problem is. People here are not creating things here for others. They are developing something, and sharing it with others.
And I guess, you didn't read the comment in the link in my previous post. Otherwise, it probably would have been more clear.
I'm not trying to insult. On the contrary, I am trying to help you figure it out, not have someone figure it out for you, in the spirit of xda-developers, not xda-support-desk.

It's funny, but I remember more than one individual having the same issue in the Blackrose thread. And I remember mentioning to at least one individual that they could try to flash Blackrose manually, instead of using the installer. But maybe you missed that. Or did you not read the entire thread?

lol, seriously?
There are 956 posts in the Blackrose thread alone. Expecting someone to read EVERY single post and absorb all of that information at one time is a bit proposterous. I'd bet it'd take a good 3-4 hours to just read that single thread.
I'm not saying we should spoon feed the newbs (especially the ones who can't follow simple instructions, like not posting a question in a forum with a big sticky at the top that explicitly says "WARNING - DO *NOT* POST QUESTIONS IN THIS FORUM - only tips/info/etc."), but at what point do we say... hey, this is how you do it, these 900 posts don't matter, or are outdated, or are duplicate questions...

I WAS being serious. Maybe it's just me, but I like learning, and I like helping those who like to learn. And don't tell me it's because people don't have time to read them...I work 60-70 hours a week, take post-graduate classes, raise 3 kids (which includes going to soccer games, homework, skating and dance lessons), and I still have time to read some threads, write up some guides, and help others.
If I want to flash something, I read the entire thread, so I learn from others' mistakes. When I had my Nexus One and I wanted Blackrose, I read every post in that Blackrose thread, up until I replaced the N1. I guess I have a hard time understanding someone who doesn't, and then complains that the guides should be better, and saying "this $%!& is ridiculous".
One of the things people need to develop skills for, if they're doing anything technical, is SEARCH. It helps a lot to filter out the crap, because it's indeed impossible or at least unreal to read threads of 300+ replies. But searching helps. Noobs should start working on their google-fu.
I agree that Blackrose thread isn't the simplest around. But just think - it's not more and not less, but bootloader replacement! The very thing that noobs SHOULD NOT TOUCH until they understand what they're doing.
So, the first response should be - if you don't understand how to do something, STAY AWAY UNTIL YOU DO. And indeed, go vent somewhere else. This isn't a forum for pleasing users.

So let me get this straight: You are looking for help (despite not having read the Blackrose thread), I give you two suggestions (check you driver install and flash the modified hboot manually, both are in the Blackrose thread), and you are still flippant and not happy?

Ok, so as I was reading though the DC 2.06 thread trying to gain some knowledge and figure out any bugs/workarounds/tips/tricks I got to page 30 something and just had to post this.
PLEASE
PLEASE
PLEASE
Stop posting USELESS, POINTLESS, BLOATING, POSTS!!!
I'm not trying to be hostile or anything but posts like....
"booting it now!" and "waiting for files to copy back to my sd card." and "I'm only 50% downloaded, can't wait!!"
While yes... it's good you are excited, but honestly, 99% of us don't give a damn. It makes it freakin' IMPOSSIBLE to navigate through this forum!!! And I don't want to hear anybody cry "Search" either. vBulletin search is NOT the best out there. I think yahoo Boolean searches from 1997 were better. And you have to search with the most basic of keywords, and those keywords (like apps2sd) are used in so many POINTLESS posts that its again, USELESS.
I mean, there is basically NO moderation here. It's like XDA Hero CDMA forums isn't even here. Things just run amock.
Sorry if this post came off as a bit hard, but come on. I mean, COME ON. Let's ALL work together to make this forum a little easier to find information. Is your post asking a question or adding anything to the community? No? Then think twice about posting in a [ROM] thread. I know the Devs appreciate the positive re-inforcement of their ROMs and they deserve it! However I dont think ROM threads are the place for that, NOT ONLY THAT, but when threads such as DC's start as a 2.0 and then are updated to 2.1 then 2.2 then 2.3 etc etc etc and the original post of the thread is changed instead of creating a new thread, so therefor the first 200 pages aren't even remotely relevant to 2.3 they're still from 2.0!
Ok, I'm sorry...
[/RANT]
i'm not trying to be hostile or anything, and i don't have anything against this or you, but really.
there have been so many threads JUST like this before. they all say the same thing.
in the end, they become one of those 'useless' posts, because no matter how many times you say this, its probably not going to stop people from making useless posts. sorry
AGREED! And it didn't come of hard to me!
Plus, those posts are more useful than this one. At least they give the dev, who worked for hours or days or months on the ROM, the satisfaction of knowing people appreciate it.
This post, on the other hand, accomplishes nothing.

Then somebody give me some damn moderation powers and I'll click that delete button all day long.
I moderate 3 other vBulletin forums. Mainly car forums, with 50,000+ members. I have no problem keeping them clean, and would not mind spending some of that time over here too. Hell even if I'm the only one doing it that's better than nothing!
thats definitely the worst thing about this forum. we don't have any active mods on this one. most other forums do. not us.

Ok, you said your thanks.... time for CONSOLIDATION!
Yeah although u are correct in ur intent. The best way to get these issues taken care of is for our forum to get a mod that actually spends time here and doesn't mind being hated. I personally have tried to get them to make me a mod. But I guess u gotta be someone special to get that privilege. As I always do what they ask of me then never here a reply ontheir decision. Our forum is held down by the fact we don't have subforums like general, themes and apps, q&a and so on. But yeah the only way to get are issues resolved is to contact the mods and ask them to help us.

ROFL This post made me laugh. Its so true, those posts are useless and offer nothing to the Rom maker.
I like the idea of the developers having something like a discuss thread where the good jobs and such can continue be posted for the roms. It becomes pretty difficult looking through the thread to find useful tidbits when it gets to be over 50 pages or so.
I do agree that having a moderator would be of great benefit too. +1 for toast becoming a mod.
U cant fix stupid :-/ people think posts counts make them cool. Posting one word replies followed by 10chars. Itll never be fixed, too many idiots. Just be happy we dont have that gay rep system.
Personally I like treasure hunts, so I am pretty happy the way things are. Lol.
Joking aside, I think that this is one of the strongest online communities/forum that I have joined and cared about. I think that the slack the moderators allow has allot to do with how I feel about this community. People are allowed to have a personality, a opinion, and a sense of humor here. It is very nice to come to a forum like this.
The way I read the long ROM threads is read the first page then go to last page and work my way backwards... works well for me. I see the updates the ROM creator posted and then the latest information being passed along that way.
Thinking about what i read now........ can't wait to finish..
LOL no really i do wish we could kindly ask the Devs to start a new thread upon each major revision and maybe put a link in the new thread to the previous version's tread. then post like mine about may not become as frustrating to read do to the lower volume of them.

Actually he is trying to make this forum more manageable. Which IMO you would have to be blind not to realiese. Seriously 300+ pages are really hard to go though. And sometimes in threads ill see a theme or something cool and ill feel like good thing I read every post in that thread or I wouldnt have that. It feels like some really cool stuff gets barried in the threads.

Damageless is trying to fix finding updates and themes with his updater tool. The updates will come to you! How cool is that? He is also going to try to help other devs to include a updater on their ROMs. Although this will not fix how cluttered the threads are in this forum it will assist you in finding the latest and greatest ways to trick out your Hero.
the only thing that should change is just every time a fix is found the OP should just take the fix and put it in the first post. People should be able to flash a rom and have the fixes all in the first post, this way people dont ask repeat questions. Whether or not everyone likes it people are always going to post "useless" stuff, which can be viewed as appreciative thanks or just people showing their excitement. I personally like xda a lot because people have personality its not all just straight discussion about a rom or anything like that.
Maybe we just could have a separate subforum for each major ROM? that way there could be the threads for people rambling and such, and separate threads for bug fixes, releases, etc.
I'm new 'round here (obviously), and I have to agree, finding the information I need has been difficult with every thread being hundreds pages. Finding that one post of someone with the same problem as me (and a solution) is a monumental task.
Just give each rom author a thread for people to leave their thanks, and keep the rom threads to discussing the rom.
+frickin1 for this thread. I think we should just start a poll to vote for someone here to be a mod, and just make the current XDA moderators accept that we have that mod... it's just ridiculous how it is right now.
what about in-thread stickies...there has to be a plugin for it somewhere...where you can nominate posts as thread stickies and all of the thread stickies, once approved by the OP, move to the beginning of the thread, so it would go
1st Post: OP
2nd Post: First approved helpful post
3rd Post: 2nd approved.... etc
that way all of the useful stuff will be right on that first page. If it's not already a plugin...it should be.

The obvious question to me is, did you try Odin again after it failed? Logic would suggest that if Odin failed I'd have to do it again.

It is because of your tar file on odin.it was two small.try re odin ing it with a tar file of 255 mb or something like that.happened to me before too when I was a super noob but fear not you'll eventually become less of a noob too as time passes

Using google first saves you time because its an immediate response, it saves everyone else time having to an a simple question, and it saves our forums from being cluttered. I said nothing rude and I would have answered his question had it not already been answered (which I highlighted with my quote and saying "this"). If you want to respond to my adult advice and response by acting childish, that is your prerogative but I will continue to post help to those who made an effort to get it.
thats i guess meh cool but a simple reply/explaination would have been "flash odin again" instead of repeating the long rant over and over again too. maybe its jus best to leave this place altogether

I believe his point was, however, that before one starts an endeavor that can break a piece of $500 hardware one should generally make sure they understand all of the possible outcomes and how to deal with them which he pointed out that you didn't. He could have said it in a more polite manner but he was correct.
I have ben to this screen when my odin got interupted. Pull the battery for a couple minutes. Hold down the one key on the keyboard and then power on while holding it. This puts you in download mode. Odin back to stock.

It appears I have one thanks or maybe I cant count. More than likely since I dont cry about wanting thanks that could be it. The purpose of a forum is to get help. Regardless if the answer could be found on google the forum would not need to exist. I am on one forum and it is the most mature forum there is. I see question repeated over and over again. Even in this case people still answer it like it was asked the first time. If all forums were like that, forums would be a much better place.

I do not understand why it is difficult to simply search for an answer. If you cannot find the answer, then post and people will help. As I've stated I do very often provide detailed explanations to people even to those who had not searched for the answer however I always add that in the future they should seek out the answer on their own first. His question had been answered and as such I stated that he should try and figure things out on his own. I have never begged for a "Thanks" and I could care less about them but I have spent hours of my time helping others fix issues and there are many people who can attest to that. Leatherneck has done the same, in fact he has even helped me a few times that I can think of in recent history. On the other hand, the only posts I've seen from you are complaints about other users or asking other users for help. The point of these forums is to allow a place for developers to gather and together fix and hack away at new phones and such, not to aid in every little personal disaster. That is why it is a FORUM RULE to search. A rule for which violators can receive infringements or even bans. By telling people to search, I am not telling them to shut up I am showing people how to be an active member of this community and if you cannot grasp that then your place here is very limited.

Used to do it in no time... Now getting massage "USB connection failed".
Ran Task 29... Installed Magldr... Can access SD card through USB MassStrg...
Used to run MIUI 29.0 ROM on this phone, wanted to install Sensation 2.2 .....OUT of luck.... CWM doesn't install... WHAT I'm doing wrong????
Please, any Ideas.....
Everything appreciated!!!!
explain the problem more, please? Are you saying you CAN flash magldr, (not that you should need to, all you should have needed to do was repartition, and maybe not even that, depending on the rom sizes) but you CANT flash cwm?
full step by step with as much detail as poss, please.
"Please......HELP!!"
*sigh* yet another ridiculous title for a topic. This is getting really old now but.. A topic title needs to be descriptive about the topic, please use some common sense ffs. What you do think thsi place would look like if all the n00bs who need help posted titles with "omg plz hlp" or "please help urgent" etc etc etc.
To answer your question, you need to partition your device. Do this with HD2 Toolkit which is in the sticky topics.

Yes I am smart, smart because I have common sense enough to know how to title a topic, which you obviously lack judging from the actual title of this topic and your recent reply.
Common sense dictates that the title of this topic describes this topic. "Plz help" or "hd2 screwed" does not describe your topic. For example "Issues installing CWM, Help required" or something along those lines actually describes your topic.
This makes it easier for people browsing pages and also keeps the section organized aswell as helps others searching topic titles. What do you think a page would look like if all we had was n00bs posting crap titles like this all the time?
Please say that you now understand, because there is no other way of trying to explain the simple concept.

Though common sense "dictates" that a thread with proper subject naming will yield better results and not piss off the XDA gods... it also dictates that if you want someone to do something, it's better to suggest than bark.
You could have done several things differently:
1 - not replied to the thread, because you were annoyed by the poster's lack of proper subject line
2 - bit your tongue and replied with an answer to the question. (I would not have bitten mine)
3 - SUGGESTED that a better subject line is the way to go.
A little guidance and suggestion goes a long way... and if it's too much for you to do, then it's best to not vent your frustration at the next person to trigger it.
Having said that... OP... a better subject line would have prevented this entire unfortunate discourse.

You weren't blunt. You were rude. There's a difference.
Here's what you wrote:
*sigh* yet another ridiculous title for a topic. This is getting really old now but.. A topic title needs to be descriptive about the topic, please use some common sense ffs. Oh, and about your issue, I don't see what you're doing wrong, try starting over with a Task 29? Maybe try redownloading the files, may have been a bad download?

I bet 90% (or more) of all "Help me!" type posts can be resolved with those few threads. Maybe another 5% need to be directed to another thread or two, and only the last 5% or so actually require more information than what has already been posted. If people would follow the XDA rules, search, and read what is easily available, most of them wouldn't have problems in the first place...much less need to make posts about them time after time. This forum has evolved nicely and people have taken their time to put together guides, solve problems, and create helpful posts. It is a slap in the face of those people when others don't take the time to read the information they made available. I see it all of the time, people saying, "but this is Q&A, I should be allowed to ask questions yadayadayada...). For some reason, to them, Q&A means I don't need to search, read, or learn, I can just ask a question that has been asked 20 times already (usually still on the first page) and people must flock to me with easy answers on silver platters! Of course, that is assuming they even put the question in the Q&A forum to start with. For some reason, they think they are above the rules or they are so special the rules don't apply to them. Q&A (according to XDA) exists to help AFTER someone has already searched and read on their own...not as a substitute for doing so. And saying, "but I searched", when it is obvious that no searching or very little searching was done only makes them a liar as well.
At most, people should only need to be directed to this information (existing threads). If they choose to ignore this help or if they think they are too important to take the time needed to read and learn...too bad. Fortunately, most accept the help and take advantage of the information, others, well I guess they just need to sit around, all butt-hurt, with their bricks.
And to those that get butt-hurt...No, I'm not a Mod and I'm not affiliated with XDA, I just follow the rules that I agreed to when I signed up...just like everyone else is supposed to. DO you?
...and this isn't necessarily directed at the OP, I just happened to say it in this thread.
This is not unique to XDA. People on all forums ask before trying to find the answer. It doesn't matter how much good info is posted, most users want to be spoon fed instead of trying to learn on their own.
Even with power of Google, we see people post " how do I ....." On forums first, when the same query on google will give instant answers.
I can't explain it, but we are all witness to it.

A lot of members like Axman have invested many hours in writing great "noob" threads. Very well done and easy to understand. What I never get is why folks invest a lot of money in this phone, and others, and don't want to spend time educating themselves on how to root it and flash roms.

I started those guides thinking that everyone would be talking about flashing roms, whats cool, whats not, and so on, made them so anyone new could even understand, I must have forgotten that people just want to get a phone and start rooting and such, without reading because his buddy said it was cool to root and flash roms, even told him, here go to this site and get roms, and flash them. Then the process starts, a continuous posts of I can't , and it won't questions.
What gets me, you know they are not searching, because the post right above theirs has their problem right in the thread title. Saw one of those yesterday somewhere.
Ka dumb a$s, duh!

This! Also I got very intimidated by all the people screaming at me. I did a bunch of research before I asked the question and was still confused hence the question I'm not an xda idiot but the s4 was already very big in modding when I joined whereas the infuse and vivid had just started to get cwm and root when I got them so I grew with the romers I apologize for looking so nooby since reading the first post I now have a auto Loki cwm and root access and am running the Google edition ROM thank you all for the suggestions and links

Don't feel bad sometimes we need to vent--nothing personal
I came here in early May from the One S and close to 3.5 years of flashing HTC devices with the advantage of unlocked bootloaders thru fastboot. But, still felt like a noob here--still do--
Odin/Kies/Loki were all new. Esp loki. I have spent hundreds of hours reading probably a couple thousand posts. Still learning. It does take a lot of effort to figure this out for some of us--like me.
But, a good investment as one needs to not only know how but why--to not lose a pricey phone--
Welcome to the S4--Unbelievable Phone--:good:
EDIT: Problem Resolved
Hello, after reading for hours, I now realize that I was wrong. Not totally new to rooting, etc. but this one caught me off guard. I updated to the latest MF3 OTA from ATT.
My problem is I tried to install TWRP from the goo manager, and now the recovery doesn't work on the phone at all. For the longest time it just kept rebooting the phone endlessly, and I could make it get into download mode.
I managed to get the phone to boot up by flashing the stock rom with odin in the bootloader section (did this by accident trying to recover the phone), and then went into download mode, and clicked cancel. It booted up fine.
If I try to enter recovery at all, it goes back into the endless boot cycle till I do some playing around with odin.
How to do I get the normal recovery working again? I would like to factory reset this and sell it for a GPE phone.
Thank you for your time.
Is there a downloadable mf3 ROM out there I can use to flash it with Odin?

Not to be a stickler but it's the same person.
And not to be disrespectful, but the galaxyroot website says installing a custom recovery is fine but it must be rooted first - if not rooted go here - you go here and it shows the mf3 root method. Never said much else about it. I rarely use XDA to ask for information. The post always turns into a flame war with people who are extremely disrespectful. To me this forum is extremely mixed up with post, and other times the information isn't clear. I agree totally that I made the mistake, but I admit to my failure and now I'm trying to learn from it. I'll never understand why the people on this forum and I mean especially this forum love to bash others.

The reason people are annoyed is because people are constantly coming here with little knowledge, ignoring all the useful guides stickied at the top of the forums to try and help these exact same people, then rushing into an advanced procedure without a proper idea of what they're doing. Then they make a brand new thread to ask a question/beg for help, when it's already been answered 100 times, rather than searching for the answer first.
It's not something to get upset about because it's going to keep happening no matter what...but it is laughably annoying.
Anyways, I don't know what website galaxyroot is, but you need to get your info/guides/procedures/research right here at XDA...not at some random website with crappy information. That was your first mistake.

Absolutely!
And I might add...
Asking questions (regardless of how many times they have already been asked) is NOT learning. Learning IS searching and reading available information, no matter how much time it takes, until a person has complete knowledge about their device and what it is they are going to be doing to it. It is called "being responsible for your own actions":. People that keep asking the same questions over and over again are NOT trying to learn anything. They are just trying to get someone else that usually did take the time necessary to learn about their phone to get them out of a situation that they got themselves into while putting a minimum of their own effort into it. Just so they can go back and screw something up again.
People who ask valid questions AFTER they have searched, read, and learned are generally handled in a very friendly manner because they have displayed a willingness to actually learn about what they are doing. I've already said this in several other posts but it comes down to people that do things correctly versus people that are lazy, have a sense of entitlement, or feel as if their time is more valuable than others...it's just that simple.

I'm not quite understanding you. Instead of "checking another forum out to see if we have any solutions as of yet", why didn't you take the time to read what has been posted about it in this forum (as suggested)? People (here) even gave you a screenshot and instructions on how to find the EXACT links that would have helped. Was that not enough? I think you are being difficult just to be difficult...or do you really think that you shouldn't have to take the time to research and learn about something even when the links are handed to you? Maybe you should take a little of YOUR time to read and learn a little bit instead of expecting people to take THEIR time to answer your questions that have already been answered multiple times elsewhere, especially when people are nice enough to show you the way. What is your definition of "help"?
You don't have to answer any of this if you don't want to, I actually rather you didn't.

I'm not even going to fight with you. I'd suggest sticking on topic. Anyways I did thank those that helped so don't complain at me for not reading something you know about.
Nevertheless my recovery is working again now. Something that XDA doesn't have posted on it (at least for the mf3). Maybe I could be more of a nerd and explain things in more detail like I should have. I have been pretty sick these last few weeks. I'm a disabled veteran and have quite a lot of problems. You don't freaking know me. Don't tell me what I'm trying to be. Just because I'm not as familiar with this forum like you doesn't mean I didn't freaking try.
I am TRUELY sorry for the inconvenience I have put you through. I won't ask anymore questions here again. I'll go where I should have in the first place.
P.S. - read ALL my post before you decide to play God and tell me what I am. A post I referee to earlier was deleted so it kinda makes me look like a you know what.
Please don't try to bash me here anymore as I really never meant to offend anyone here. Its just really depressing to me that just because you found something and I didn't I'm the idiot.

You don't have to listen to the suggestions of people that are trying to help you, It's nothing personal. Good luck and I hope your health improves.

Wow - 1 question and 2 pages of beating this poor guy senseless.
No disrespect but you guys/gals with 1000+ posts, try to remember when you where single digit posts.
Some people dont "haunt" this forum day and night and know "common" issues/symptoms and their fixes.
I see lots of threads with what appear to be valid questions and just about all say "this has been covered - do some research".
I hope I never go to a Doctor and say "I dont feel well, my nose is running and feel itchy" and they respond "this has been covered - do some research".
Again no disrespect but WOW!!!!

If you find a doctor who provides around the clock support for free, let me know!
If that doctor posts the answers to most of your ailments right on the door when you walk in with a big READ THIS FIRST sign...and you walk right past it and ask him a question that's on the door, do you think that might get annoying?
Ok, I'm tired of this analogy!
