For some reason my 3g keeps disconnecting. In settings the mobile network option is greyed out, stuck on "turning on". The only thing that fixes it is a reboot.

No one has any idea why this happens?
Is your phone stock?
it seems to just show that when the phone is idle, not updating, sending/receiving, etc. i have no way to prove this, just a theory.

I had that problem when I was running adrylalyne's Vanilla FrankenROM. It's the sole reason why I had to quit running it. It was a seriously annoying once-in-a-while thing at first but once I'd been running it for about 24 hours, it seemed to happen ALL THE TIME and got to the point where sometimes even a reboot wouldn't fix it. I haven't had it on any other ROM, though.
I was running the leaked radio (2.05?) when I had that ROM. Now that I've got 2.15, I've been thinking about giving it another shot.

No, the connection completely goes away. It's not just "I can't see the 3G symbol"... The phone actually has NO data connection and it seems impossible to get it to come back without a reboot.
2.15 radio fixed that for me. Using first leak Rom still.

in order to get rid of this, you'd need to find which file or which portion of that file controls the signal indicator on the phone, and replace it with an older version of that file, from before this "idle" indicator began.
maybe the google holds the answers you seek?

Not an indicator problem. The phone truly has no connection.

Good to know. I think I will try that FrankenROM again, then.
i'm unrooted and on stock OS, just got my incredible yesterday...so far i've noticed that it seems to just stay dormant, whenever i open an app that connects to the network, it automatically lights up the indicator and starts using the data, and it doesn't seem to prevent me from actually sending or receiving data, so i don't know how i would tell if it's actually no connection or just an "idle" indicator. how did you come to that conclusion?

What you see is normal. The 3G (or 1X) indicator only lights when the data connection is being used. The problem here is that there was no data connection. I would attempt to do anything that used the data connection and it would not connect. No email, no internet, no Nav, no nothing. The programs would all open, but could not download anything.
Agreed, that's sort of what I was implying, I was referring to the OP. so the connection issues are Rom based, not related with the gray indicators. Just because its gray doesn't mean you don't have connection. Clarifying for the next person who stumbles across this thread.

To the OP, this happened to me today using Sky Raider Sense 2.5.2. I also had to restart, so it's not only you that has the problem.

What he was talking about being greyed out is when you go into Menu> Settings> Wireless & Networks, the place where you check to turn Mobile networks on and off is greyed out with the text of "Turning on..." below.
well now i feel like a giant ass, lol!

Same thing happened to me over the weekend. I was in a tiny town in Texas that apparently had no 3g and I was unable to do anything that used the data connection. Reboot didn't work, neither did changing the Mobile Directory Number to all zeros when pressing ##program>NAM-General (as was suggested on a different forum which I cannot link to). What sucks is that it's highly unlikely I can duplicate this problem since there is probably good 3g coverage around the verizon store in the city where I live. I called verizon and the person said something about that area not having access to the data network, which I don't believe because when I was screwing with the settings under ##program I managed to get a text message. My wife's Samsung Vibrant (I know, different network) had no 3g but she was still able to access all apps that required the data network.
When my wife's Incredible was stock, this happened to her. It wouldn't connect to 3G. When going into settings and checking it out, "Mobile Network" was all grayed out. After LONG discussions with Verizon Tech Dept, 2 factory resets later, they found the problem to be on their end with the phone being "lost" on their system. They reset something (didn't tell me what) and bingo! her phone had 3G again.
I just had it happen to me. Reboot fixed it, but I'd like to know why its happening so I can tell my friends at VZW to look into it...

Still happening to me. I told the tech that a bunch of people in the forums were saying it was a problem on their end, something about my phone needing to be removed from and then added back to the data plan, and they told me that they'd look into it. Eventually the 3g came back on its own like it always has when I have this problem, and the next day I got a text from verizon saying the issue had been fixed (which I doubt consisted of anything more than someone having the system send me a text saying the issue had been fixed). I've had this problem when my phone was stock, when I updated to the 2.05 baseband, and now that I've rooted and installed skyraider. Not exactly the experience I anticipated when I left the iphone 3g...
noticed another thing, idk if related...my gmail will "quit" working...meaning, it shows i have new emails inside the app, but they haven't pulled to my phone yet. the refresh button in the app, and the sync now button under accounts don't work, i had to do a nand wipe and restore a file from a day ago. i think it's app related, because it always seemed to happen after i updated some apps in the market, but one of the times (this last time) i didn't update the apps, i deleted them and it still happened. all other data and network connections work fine, only gmail. prolly not related, but thought i'd throw it out there
Hey guys,
This is actually my first post here but I do A LOT of reading on this forum.
I didn't quite find anything regarding my question (or at least a solid answer), however, so I've decided to post it up.
Has anyone else experienced a sudden loss of data from time to time out of nowhere?
I go from having Full Green 3G bars to grey bars out of the blue. I've heard the green bars is to let you know that you are connected to Google services but I am not able to access anything that uses data.
For instance, when I open up the browser, I receive an error telling me there is no network connection. When I open up anything else that uses a data connection, Market, News, etc, I receive the same error about there not being a connection.
This would make sense if I was moving and going in and out of service areas, but it happens when the phone is simply sitting on my desk and not moving at all. I usually use it to listen to Pandora while at work and have noticed that the songs cut in and out due to this sudden loss of a data connection.
I went from a Nexus One to the Nexus S and have never, not once, lost my full 3G bars in this same exact location. I personally believe its a software bug of some kind and have high hopes for it being fixed in the future. The N1 had similar issues when it first launched and Google / T-Mo were able to remedy that for the most part.
I am actually on my third Nexus S because the first two had some type of hardware issue; the first one's back button didn't work or light up and the second one had a blown ear speaker and would sound like a blown speaker in a car. As an early adopter, I expected this, so it didn't bother me in the least bit.
ALL of them did the same thing, so I know it is not just limited to my exact phone. This is definitely something with the Nexus S in general (or the current build of Gingerbread).
Can anyone shine some light on this situation? Thanks in advance and keep up the great work here guys!
---------------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: Here are a few steps that I have taken in order to solve my sudden loss of data issue. I'm not guaranteeing this will work for you, but it has worked for me and a couple of users here on the forum.
Do the following:
Activate / Use the Sim Card that came with the phone (this is to ensure you are using the latest sim cards)
Make sure you have a 4G internet plan. (No t-zones, No web2go -- FULL internet only)
Call T-Mobile and have ask them to Reset your phone with their Towers
Here's a more technical explanation posted by Johoja:
1) Having network selection set to manual ( i.e selecting 302490 or TMOBILE) will result in No Service on a reboot. Solutions: - Have to cycle airplane mode to get it to pick up service (can be done with automatically tasker) - OR Use automatic network selection. (you can force wcdma only but that will reset the SMSC which is annoying if you go in and out of wind away/home areas and you want to roam.)
2) Being in a area with no service for extended periods of time 5+minutes(subway, basement, etc) will result in a dead baseband, meaning once you come into an area with service the phone will not reacquire signal, airplane mode will not work as the baseband is now crashed, cant maunally search for a network. Have to reboot to get signal. Solutions: -Use tasker to cycle airplane mode on and off when in no service areas i.e) search signal 4 minutes, airplane mode on 10 minutes. This will keep the baseband from crashing and possibly save battery. -Use NoBars to accomplish thesamething ( taskergivesyou a bitmore flexibilty of course but harder to use) http://www.appbrain.com/app/nobars-b...omdryer.nobars - Use airplane edit to avoid turning wifi/bt off when airplane mode is on. http://www.appbrain.com/app/airplane...kalti.airplane
3) WCDMA perferred does not work. - No solution
http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/Google+Mobile/thread?tid=747f398a6c1bb2b9&hl=en&start=40:
I read one users response on a different thread regarding something similar to the issue that I am having.
They said T-Mobile told them to get a newer sim card and that this may remedy the problem. In my case, this has been the only constant in the 3 phones that I have been through. I have had the same sim card for about 3 years or so now.
I will try activating the sim card that came in the box with T-Mo to see if this remedies the problem. Since I'm at work right now I will have to try when I get home later.
Does anyone think this will have any affect what-so-ever?
The galaxy s phones when first released, all variants, had issues of signal dropping from full to zero bars while sitting in one place. I remember because there were YouTube videos of it All over and it was shortly after the apple antenna issue.
Not sure if or how it was ever resolved. But it seems that Samsung may just have this type of radio baseband performance if we see all these individual units doing this. I don't know maybe others can respond.
I have the same issue as the OP. I travel to the same location weekly with NEXUS ONE, signal never drops in the T-MO Country here locally, and streaming CNET POD CAST never a hiccup, however, with the new NEXUS S, I would lose DATA Connection only, while the 3G will show full signal. I had to reboot the phone to get the DATA back.
is it the S issue or 2.3 issue?
food for though....
If you have T-zones or Web2go or Phones 1st web, you will have problems
I had the same problem too, now I fixed the problem. The thing was that had the wrong data plan on the NS, i had my old web plan from my hd2 which seems like different from the one for the NS. I restarted my phone after 5 mins off and now i have my internet working beautifly. A T-Mobile rep said that it was an error in the system that made the phone think that that was the right plan for the NS for a few. A glitch you may say, but all you have to do is put the right data plan that all, easy. Hope this helped and have a wonderful holidays everyone.

this is happening to me too, last night for a little while and today for about hte last 4 hours can't get connection back. i have full white bars, with 3g icon but can't access anything
So I activated the new sim card last night and I'm still having the same problem. Albeit it doesn't happen as frequent, but it still does it nonetheless.
I will call T-mo again to verify my plan. I am on a 1500 Minute Family Plan which includes unlimited data and messages. I will see if they need to tweak something and let you guys know if this remedies the problem.
Ok, it seems like the issue has been resolved after I spoke to T-Mobile earlier today.
The rep on the phone verified that the data plan I was on was in fact the correct one. He said he was going to reset the signal from the towers to my phone to see if this would resolve the issue. He asked me to turn my phone off for about 15 seconds after we hung up.
Since then, I haven't seen the problem arise again so my guess is that it somehow fixed whatever was going on.
I'll let you guys know if this changes and the problem occurs again.

What's with the CAPS? ?
On topic: i have a captivate and I can confirm that all galaxy S phones had droppend data. An official ota update fixes it so maybe you guys need to wait for something official. Isn't there a new firmware for the nexus S already? Try flashing that and see if you still have issues.

Doesn't every android phone from samsung have this problem?
I know the Moment has that problem, after 3 updates samsung called it quits, I still have to reboot mine 2 to 3 times a day for data lockups.
@timur525 Yea, I'm already on 2.3.1.
I manually updated the first hour it came out hoping that it would solve the issue. The problem was still there after the update.

That shouldn't affect anything. My number shows up in status.
I had this issue resolved a few months ago as the push-to-talk app Tikl requires this in order to use it.
I was having the problem even with my number showing up. Call T-Mobile and have them reset you with the towers like they did for me and see if that helps you too.

I posted about this same issue on wrong section of the forum. Ive had this issue ever since samsung vibrant. I have applanet installed on my phone and some of the app that i installed accessed my apn and totally changed my apn setting to "Sirious application disabled.epc.tmobile" or something like that so i wyped everthing off from the phone and so far i havent had the issue ever since yesterday. Also i had the locale and language setting to korean so im thinking that might be causing it also.

That's what I remember too. I think its just an issue with the radio Samsung uses in all their phones. Might not be a way to fix it if even their new phones like the nexus s still have this issue. They prob would have tweakdd it by now if they could.
Same problem here. Xmas eve on shift and I have a phone that had no connection whatsoever (not even phone capabilities) this may be the one thing that takes the phone back. (If it happens again)

Have you called T-Mobile to see if they can give you a reset to the towers?
I had this done yesterday afternoon and haven't had the problem again since.
Also, if you'really using an old sim, I would suggest activating the one the phone came with just to be on the safe side.
If that doesn't help you then I would at least wait until just before your return period ends to see if there will be an update to address the issue.

Sort of.
Right now I cannot get onto tbe android market or google maps. I can get onto google on opera and of course xda, im thinking its google. Reset doesnt help either.
If I find out whats the cause ill post back or pm.

That happens to me somewhat when I send MMS... but it comes out fine in the end... I don't know if that's the same issue with yours.
It used to do that a while back when I had just gotten the play, but now it never drops below 2 bars and always has 3g. I'm suspecting it has something to do with the enhanced 3g coverage upgrade they did in our area recently.
Sent from my R800x using Tapatalk
yeah. most of the time though, the zero signal comes when I wake my phone from sleep mode. other than that, full bars.
I did manage to get it working after some snooping. I went onto settings, applications, all, market and uninstalled the updates. Reverting back to the market I had when I first got the phone.
Ill mention that I messed about with download manager in the same directory in the settings, but I assume that rolling back the market did the trick.
Next day the same problem occurs, rolling back and clearing cache didnt help this time. Later In the day it fixed itself.
Im new to android so take what ive said with caution. At your own risk, but thought id mention as it could work for others. At the very least it could narrow your searching for a solution.
Hope it helps

Depends on the area where you are and the strength of your service.
For example theres a lot of interference at my job, to the point if I do any text messaging or facebook checking during the day my battery is near dead by the time I leave. However when I'm at home the battery will last all weekend if I don't play any games.
While I'm at work you will see it jump from 3G to nothing and back almost randomly and sometimes Facebook/market/etc work fine, other times they refuse to conenct for hours.
I get max signal at work, where I still had the problem. Signal wasnt my problem, I could get onto google through opera and on the xda app.

Settings/privacy settings/reset settings (NOT FACTORY RESET)
Resets all settings but leaves appa etc alone. I sync data with google so im not 100% what you might lose if you dont sync. For me the only change ive noticed is that now everything works as it should've.
The same problem keeps coming and going, im hoping that the above will work for me. Seems to be working, however if it doesnt ill post back.

It is a firmware problem, at least for people with R800i models. The update 3.0.A.145 (first 2.3.3 pre xLoud update) did not have any Wifi or phone drops. The xLoud update crippled the modem terribly, making it work horribly where there was no issue before...

Ok problems back for me...again...
Sorry, I kind of hijacked this thread. I will start my own (after some searching) as my problem seems to be with google apps.
I can get on the internet, opera and xda come to mind immediately. But google mail, maps and the market all refuse to connect.

Think its working now...shouldnt have said (typed) that.
Either way thought id mention the latest solution thats working for me. Push the power button until you get the air plane mode option come up, put it into airplane mode, then turn off air plane mode. Turn the phone off, then back on, then with any luck it should work.
I have a funny feeling that the problem was due to an ota update, I also think the solution was an ota update. New to android so im not too sure sorry. Thought id post just incase though.
If I dont post back then my phones all working, or at least not suffering from this problem.

Hello all,
Quick question. Is anyone losing Google Sync / Data when on Wifi ?
Happens at home and work. Never had an issue with my GS3 or One X. On cell service it works fine.
update 11/24
Seems as though its a pretty widespread issue. Also , it is an issue with the connection it self, not just google sync.
I opened up a "google issue" , if you are having the same problems I recommend posting on the thread. It can be found here:

Is android 4.2 incompatible with 128-bit WEP???
This is driving me nuts! Any ideas community??

hey guys,
I actually put in a google issue that seems to be picking up some steam.
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=40065
I have no clue what causes it at this point. It doesnt happen on all networks. Happens on my work network which is open / unsecured.
Also does it on my inlaws network which is wpa2 encrypted. However my home network which is also wpa2 encrypted is fine.
I recommend posting on the google issue to raise awareness
I added my experience, it seems to me like it's keeping wifi alive but not the Google connection. I have no issues on a Nexus 7 running 4.2 so it's not my router either but could be something specific to Nexus 4 hardware. I might try changing wifi sleep policy to never to see if at least this way HSPA will be connected when screen is off.

Anybody not having this issue? It's really annoying and for some reason even if I set wifi to stay on when plugged in or never it takes forever to disconnect so I still don't get alerts. Definitely appears to be an issue with 4.2 so i guess we just have to wait and hope it is fixed in next update.

It actually happens to me on both new Nexus 4 and Nexus 7. Happens on home network (WPA2).
Any chance this could be a Google server issue? My Nexus 7 on 4.2 and GS3 running CM10 4.1.2 doesn't have issue either just my Nexus 4. Not sure what's causing it on my Nexus 4 but it's driving me crazy.

I'm pretty sure this is a general Wifi issue, and not limited to Google services. I've noticed that when the Wifi goes to sleep, I no longer receive incoming calls in GrooveIP or Sipdroid. I also don't receive email alerts until I turn on the screen, and the wifi re-activates.
EDIT: I ran a simple test. Loaded GrooveIP, called GV # from another phone, GrooveIP rang. Let the phone sit for 10 minutes to fall asleep. Called again. Didn't ring. I then loaded up Advanced Wifi Lock to prevent the phone from going asleep. The first call worked, and so did the one after 10 minutes. So, this definitely seems like an issue that impacts any service depends on a reliable Wifi link - not just Google's Sync services. I ran the same test with Sipdroid, and got identical results.

That's a bad example because GrooveIP uses GTalk on the backend so you're still using Google Services. What makes this more puzzling is I went to a Brooklyn Nets game last night and they have crazy fast open WiFi at the place while my phone was connected, it appears that all notifications worked even when the screen was off. I was too busy watching the game to pay much attention but I did get emails, etc. while the screen was off and I was on Wifi. The main difference between that WiFi and my home Wifi is the one at the arena had no security at all.
I've been playing around with my router and tweaking settings but nothing is working and I'm pretty sure this is a phone software issue. What I want to find is someone with 4.2 on a Nexus 4 who is NOT having an issue. I'm starting to wonder if this is an app or Google Service sync related issue.
My Nexus 7 running 4.2 does NOT have any issue on the same exact Wifi so I'm wondering if it's some app or setting on my phone that's causing this
For me it definitely seems to occur more on unsecured networks.
Not only is it google sync but the connection in general.
Anybody with this issue brave enough to try a factory reset? If it doesn't get solved soon I'll probably flash CWM recovery, do a nandroid and then do a factory reset to see if that fixes it. At least that way if it doesn't I can restore backup.
Anyone want to try now?

Weird! So you did a factory reset and still nothing? Did you still have the issue before you restored apps? I mean like completely stock with just what comes on the phone. If you still have the issue with that, then we know it's not app related.
I might also try downloading and reflashing the system image...maybe something got screwed up in the 4.2 update??

Since I flashed Franco boot 5, the problem has stopped (i think). Flashing stock/factory reset didn't help me.

Interesting - is Franco Kernel 5 stable enough to use as a daily driver? Any issues? I'm willing to flash it now to test it but don't want to make the phone less stable.
ya i have had 0 issues with it , from what he has said its not a ton different from stock just some basic fixes

Strange then that it might fix this issue since the wifi module is stored in system and he's not overwriting it so something in the kernel itself

Sorry if this has been discussed before. I just can't find it anywhere.
Is anybody having any Wi-Fi issues with their S8? What is happening for me, is that, I connect to my home private Wi-Fi network. Then 10 seconds later the network completely disconnects. Then approximately 10-20 seconds later it reconnects again. It keeps doing it over and over and over, non stop in a cycle. So I completely disconnected from my Wi-Fi, and I'm using my 4G LTE. I started noticing this at home, but then as I go to other to other Wi-Fi networks it's he same issue.
I even did a factory reset to the phone because of this issue and a home button vibration issue, where the vibration would not stop even in standby mode. It was also causing the Android OS settings to even be disabled, and not let me go into the OS serttings from the Android OS taskbar menu button, or the button for the settings in the app drawer. The factory reset did fix the vibration issue, but it didn't fix the Wi-Fi issue at all.
Also, is anybody else having this exact specific Wi-Fi issue I'm having?
Thanks in advance for all the answers and feedback!

You need too update your phone through the Samsung Apps app. Samsung released a fix for the wifi issue.

I already am up to date with all the apps in the Play Store and the Samsung store. I even contacted Samsung, and the woman on the phone on her own just completely connected me to a manager without saying a word to me. The manager ended up saying that he never heard of this and made a bug report so they could look into it. It's also not in their system, according to this manager. This was today around 5PM EST
It could be a hardware issue. Have you thought about exchanging it?

I already did. This is the second device to have the Wi-Fi issue. I just received my replacement device in the mail today around 4PM EST, which is the device I'm talking about here.
The thing I'm thinking is, that maybe if I went back to the direct cell phone providers store and did a buyer's remorse exchange. It could just be a batch of phones that have the same issue. Which more than one from the batch could be located at the same store. But since I'm in Florida, and the replacement device came from somewhere in Pennsylvania it's a completely different batch. Which the Samsung manager agreed with me. He even told me what I already know, that even if Samsung tests the phone. People in the real world using the phone, may encounter issues that Samsung never found on their own. He also went on to say that it's vital, that people in general, especially people that are tech savvy and semi tech savvy call in, because with us calling in it can help fix the issues that Samsung may have never encountered on our own. The manager also said, that there can be more people with the same exact issue, they just never called in and reported it like I have.

What kind of router are you using? Have to tried another? Go to a Starbucks, or some other free WiFi spot and test. So far with you it's been a 100% issue. I'd start looking at different things.

Like I said in one of the above post, that I noticed it at home first. But as I used other Wi-Fi's I noticed it was an ongoing issue. I've tired my home private Network, my work private network, and at a few friends houses.
The manager from Samsung, honestly believes that it is a Android OS bug.
Ah ok. I missed that. Easy to do when on the go. [emoji3]

It's not a big deal, I completely understand. So what else do you think I should try?
I also have issues with Wi-Fi similar to yours, if anyone has a solution, please let me know
Have you made sure that in settings you have a tick on "Keep wifi on durring sleep" ? Also for the sake of it, switch off "battery optimization" for all apps and see how it behaves. Also make sure you swithch off the option "smart network switch" under WiFi settings. What your phone is probably doing is constantly trying to switch between the WiFi and mobile data, or the power management puts it in sleep to preserve battery.
Well instead of getting the same same old suggestions (which Im sure you tried, all of them) you can read thru them all here in the thread that already exists:

Honestly what's probably going to happen is, we're going to have to wait for an OTA update.

Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep is activated. But it has nothing to do with that because my phone goes to standby mode in 30 seconds. While as soon as I connect to the Wi-Fi network, 10 seconds later it completely disconnects me. Then 10-20 seconds later it reconnects me. Then it repeats the same thing over and over. The phone can be completely in use, or it can be in standby mode, the same problem still occurs. Also the same thing goes for battery optimization, while it's on and off.
It also appears that someone else on the first page is having similar Wi-Fi issues. So maybe, a few of the many mass produced phones are having Wi-Fi issues. So maybe it's really an OS bug like the manager from Samsung on the phone yesterday was telling me.
Hi All, even am having a same problem, am here in Saudi Arabia and when i spoke to samsung Persons they are not showing an exact root of the problem and not even willing to exchange my mobile. this issue is with my mobile since 3 months and am waiting for upadte , i got 2 updates till now but none solved my wifi problem, i donno what to do
I can say this only happens to me when I have Bluetooth on and my watch connected and when I'm on a 2.4 signal vs a 5....and if by chance is your phone with sprint or verizon?
