Post your ideas on the best ROMS for the HTC Desire Z and why. I am open to suggestions so leave lots of details. I want to use a new ROM but I don't want to waste my time changing them over and over til i find one.
I'll say CM7. I've tried one other - can't remember the name - and CM7 just works well. I was doing nightlies but am now with RC4.
I like the responsiveness to problems, the size of the community, the organization of the community (through the CM website) and the confidence I have that no one has a better Android ROM than I do.
gv 1.5 if u want stable no issues
not sure I can recommend cm7 even with rc4 or "final" its not stable. I tried everything, wiped cache and dalvik and still had random reboots and no bluetooth pairing no matter what I did. I gave up and went back to stable old faithful GV 1.5, which is 90% based on cm7 but stable. No reboots, just works and works great.
It depends. Do you like Sense or vanilla Android?
There is a new thread created like this every few days, so you can get some more opinions if you just browse through this subforum, and the Q&A one.
you should try miui
If you want to use HTC sense:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=837042
> stable ROM based on the original HTC stock ROM with additional features and modifications from the Virtuous team. For me definitely the best ROM with Sense included.
or a ROM without Sense:

> slim and stable Stock ROM v2.3.3 with some parts implemented from CM. It runs very smooth and without any noticeable errors. Great ROM without the Sense "rubbish".
I'm using CM7 Stable, it works well. MIUI's UI looks like IOS and I don't like it.
Lots of threads like this already but...
I've had no issues with CM7, its quite legit.

Hey guys, what would the best rom be to load on the dhd as of today?
[ROM][PNK14] Occasional & funky CM7 (Gingerbread) builds by phunkycow
Its the most buggfree and fluid Gingerbread build.. Almost flawless and doesnt suffer the lagg issue other Gingerbread roms have
There isn't a best one. It comes down to personal taste. Right now I am liking leedroid although myself I have some technical problems with it. Many people are running it fine though. It's a heavily tweaked sense rom.
My other favourite at the moment is rcmixhd. Unlike leedroid it isn't tweaked much at all, you just get a very clean and stable sense build.
Cyanogenmod 7 shows much promise too although it's still in heavy development so even the above mentioned pnk build has some buggy behaviour such as the weird and broken video gallery. Within a few weeks it should be great though.
Cyanogenmod 6 is much more stable but I find the stock froyo copy paste just too annoying without a trackball. All cyanogenmod roms are like AOSP on steroids.

Custom ROM for the Desire Z Bell NAM phone? Please post you opinions if you have used a custom ROM with the Bell Desire Z and have had a good or bad experience. I ask this because the Bell and C2 threads are intertwined for the most part but there has to be subtle and not so subtle differences due to carriers, services, etc.
Most of the customs ROMs are built around T-Mobile G2 platform.........sooo any recomends for the Bell platform specifically? I read a whole bunch but the ROM threads are seriously long, lol, and I may have missed a few things that may be missing for specific providers.
Use the latest Virtuous ROM and kernel. They run flawlessly on my Desire Z from Bell (on the Rogers network). I use the Sense version for the social phonebook functionality and other functions. The Vanilla version is great if you want stock Android, but you miss the awesome Sense widgets which I believe creates an amazing Android experience.
I'm currently running CM 6.1.1 on a Bell DZ (although i'm unlocked and on Telus) and haven't had any issues. GPS works, WiFi works, haven't tried Bluetooth yet however. Everything runs smoothly and I got a cool new boot animation as well

Yes. I second this. It runs very well "out of the box" and the latest (0.9.0) version the "default" (not "advanced") flavour is comfortably overclocked to ~1GHz when running tasks and underclocked when screen is off so it has great battery life too.
I've been using it as my daily driver. I, too, like the Sense integration of social networks and contacts. This is a really great communications device with this ROM.
MIUI , no questions
I've used Virtuous and it is one of the best I've tried. It doesn't have many new things, since the DZ already has Sense, but it's still a really nice ROM.
From my experiences, cm 6.1.1, virtuous 0.9.0 and MIUI are all reliable enough to use daily, and dangit! you couldn't ask for 3 more diverse choices.
Give each one a try, set them up how ya like em, do nandroids of each, then restore a different one every couple of days and just settle into one.
I prefer Virtuous because I personally dig Sense...But MIUI with laucher pro is sick and slick. Then again, CM6 has to be the most popular custom ROM out there...for good reason!
I guess you'll just have to try em all!
Oh yeah, I used gingervillain for a day. Think it has a little bit of work before it's a daily rom, but yeah, that'll be great when cm7/gingervillain get all sorted out.

Thanks guys.....will give the Virtuous first try.
I've used stock, the Euro WWE, CM6, Virtuous 0.8.1, MIUI, and CM7 nightly #11.
My feelings towards them all:
Stock - Overloaded with crap. Slow. Takes forever to boot (excluding the fast boot, ie Sleep mode).
Euro WWE - Same as stock w/o the extra apps
CM6 - I did not like this AT ALL. It also ate my battery. Cool boot video though.
Virtuous 0.8.1 - I liked this one quite a bit but there was an annoying bug with the trackball wake and I was almost never being notified of new emails. I used this on 3 desire z's with the same results. I recommend Virtuous if you are into Sense. It's not too different than stock, though.
MIUI - This one opened my eyes and I really wanted to stick with it, but it had a ton of issues for me. The lockscreen kept disappearing and Wifi would not stay on after reboots. The trackball wake option would not turn off after turning it on the first time. Things like that made me weary of this ROM. I tried an early version and also a later one from the beginning of Jan. I don't see anyone else complaining of those specific issues, though, so it may have just been me.
CM7 nightly #11 - This one is my new favorite by far. I really like gingerbread and this ROM is very lean and mean. Between trying MIUI and CM7 I have ditched Sense completely. It's so much more of a 'cleaner', 'pure' experience without Sense. There's less clutter, things just seem simpler, there's less crap that I don't use (browsing facebook stuff through contact list, etc.) The stock dialer is so much better since the contact list is just on another tab, instead of another app completely, and it has a favorite contacts tab (which also automatically adds frequently called people to the list).
I would definitely recommend trying a non-sense based ROM such as MIUI or CM7. They both have better dialers, contact lists, and SMS apps (the HTC one has bugs). They are both leaner and simpler. HTC menus are packed with way too many options, even just adding items to homescreens is overkill. There are some nice things such as the way you set the time on alarms in Sense, and the HTC hub (some nice ringtone sets in there), but not I don't miss much else. CM7 and MIUI both come with a lot of great rings as well. One of the things I liked most about Sense (the 'people' app) is now one of the things I dislike the most. I miss the Sense camera a lot, I am hoping someone can port that over to non-sense ROMs eventually. However the stock Gallery app is much better than the HTC gallery. Another reason not to use Sense is because certain things such as bluetooth are slightly crippled (can't use Wii-mote), and Samba wifi sharing has issues on sense too. Who knows what else. I found HTC sense syncing also brought my phone to a crawl at least once each day.
Hope that helps you in your journey!
I use a DZ on Bell and I would recommend updating the radio to the latest version as I had constant connection problems with reception for calling/data after using custom roms.
I'm currently using GingerVillian and its working great, very smooth and no lag. No major issues so far and I haven't had any fc's. The only issue so far is that I don't get voicemail notifications (not sure if its the rom or Bell). Also, keep in mind that this rom does not have Sense (I like sense, but I'm willing to use a rom without it so I can try out Gingerbread).

Virtuous 0.9.0 works great with me. A lot of issues cleaned up since 0.8 Modified stock kernel is plenty fast and has no bugs. Everything just works. If you want to OC, use the virtuous kernels; I noticed a few bugs with the other.
In my personal opinion MIUI was great, but I found it slower and less consistent than virtuous.
Gingervillain was also really nice.
Last time I used a cm7 nightly, it was obvious that it was still a work in progress...

Im running gingervillain 1.5 on my NAM and I absolutely love it. Its smooth, no lag, pretty much perfectly stable.
Currently testing the Virtuous 0.9.0 Sense ROM with the advanced kernel and quite happy with it so far, 3 days now no issues at all. Stable and smooth.
Will back up in a few days and test the MIUI, Cryo and Ginger as well, may as well........
Tried out the GingerVillian 1.5 & wow!!! Really smooth ROM & works perfectly with NAM Bell! Will keep this baby for a while!

Hello
Im new user with desire Z and now im seeking light weight + stable + fast rom.
I managed to root my phone nicely and now im looking the ultimate rom for me.
Any suggestions?
-S
If you like the stock 2.2 sense-based rom, you can always go for a stripped and deodexed version, which will have more space and arguably be a bit quicker than your stock rooted rom.
You can also choose to go with CM6 or CM7, these are basically 2.2 (CM6) and 2.3 (CM7) on steroids, with tons of enhancements and they've trimmed the fat at the same time. CM7 is extremely fast in my experiences, but is not in its final stable mod yet. There has been 1 release candidate (RC1) and several nightlies since then that have been working just fine for me. Although everyone seems have their own little issues with them because after all they are experimental builds.
I'm partial to CyanogenMod because they've been making wonderful software for me since I started with Android last summer, and its always been great. I'm sure there are also some great sense-based ROMs out there (similar to stock DZ roms + enhancements), as well as MIUI ROMs, this is up to you on personal preference, but I've given my suggestions based on what I've used successfully.
Read and experiment. =) I'm partial to CM, as I don't like sense, but that's me. You may find you like sense. Root + eng hboot + Clockwork pretty much sets yu up for fairly easy, pain free rom changes.
If your looking for lightweight and fast, I feel its best to avoid sense. Vanilla roms are slightly quicker and cleaner in my experiance.
Agree that CM is all around faster and smoother than Sense based. I used the stock Sense ROM for about 2 months. Sense seems to use lots of CPU and RAM. I have been using CM7 (RC1) for about a week, and its much smoother and faster. In particular, the Sense homepage and launcher are very sluggish in comparison. I don't think you can call CM7 "lightweight", it has lots of features cooked in (and very cool ones, at that). But it certainly fits the stable and faster requests.
Hi!
I honestly tried searching everywhere in the forum, no luck.
The question is: I need to find the most stable build, where stability is much more important compared to the functionality and all the bangs and whistles. I'll install it on someone else's phone and just don't want to have to upgrade/reinstall it every now and then.
If possible, I would like to hear about the most stable Gingerbread build and the most stable build in general.
I would love to hear about some user experience as well. I've been using
NRGZ Desire HD ROM. Beautiful and smooth but if I use it more than a few days
it tends to slow down and freeze on me. Anybody else out there care to share their
Experiences with stability?
the answer is simple: bauner's stock desire rom.
hardware wise desire is our hd2's closest cousin, hence great speed AND stability second to none. I use it with 1gb data.img on fat 32 and with use of multimount I had never any problems with data corruption, freezes, crashes or fc.
dhd roms are better as new sense is more advanced, but desire roms are also great plus speedier and butter smooth all the time.
what about gingerbread roms i have been running them off and on so far i thinks ginger runs better than froyo
i like to know toooooooooo
TycooN/MDJ
Been using Typhoon and its been ROCK STABLE to me and this is coming from a person that flashes new roms religiously.
Hi
Currently Im on Cyanogenmod 7.2.0 RC1 nightly 414 and while OK, the other day it had a HORRIBLE (unbearable) slowdown period. Even multiple restarts didnt help. Finally it seems it fixed itself but Ive looking for something new. I use Go Launcher if that makes any difference. Im into speed but I think Im going to go with stable over speed this time.
What ROM do you recommend? Also nothing broken (automatically discards all CM9 ROMs)
If you are into Sense UI, go for Virtuous ROM, stock ROM tweaked + enhancements. If CM7 works if you are into vanilla ROMs.
I have been using virtuous glite 2.0.1 its stable I had no issues at all and I get great battery life, plus its slightly overclocked. Gslim1.6 is also very good but I had better battery life with glite. Both roms are based on GB 2.3.4. Here is a good rom index thread it lists all G2-Desire Z roms

Yes, Im aware of the list but I wanted user feedback.
(Im not talking to any of you or anyone else Dont take this the wrong way at all as it is not a insult to any of you). Its funny: People ***** (a lot) when their ROMs go bad but when they are great, they dont say anything at all.
WOW G-lite is VERY old...
and i like ROMs with features; stripped down versions are not for me
sound like you will be most happy with elitemod, the cm7 based rom although i have been testing out nik3r's ics rom and like it better than most ics roms, i would go with his gingerbread rom. should be all you are looking for and great support from nik3r as well
Are you looking for a gingerbread or ics rom?

Damn I'm still happily running it! If it works great why worry how old it is. It's a testament to how well it works as it sits. anyways I'm waiting for a stable cyanogen 9. Then maybe, frankly I don't want to mess with it too much I want plain Android and I can customize it from there

I don't think you have tried much of the Sense ROMs back then, or maybe you were doing something wrong. I have had quite a few stable and fast sense ROMs. Of course they were not as fast as vanilla ones, but it works, knowing that you are the type who wants more features in ROMs.

Have you tried a CM9 Rom lately? Don't let the Beta name scare you, I have found the latest andromadus audacity extremely reliable, and everything works. I actually think it has less bugs then my stock htc GB rom.

Same, though I'm still tweaking my SetCPU settings and such, I like EliteMod's ICS rom the most right now particularly in terms of features and responsiveness. I was trying the unofficial CM9beta13 for a couple days and that thing was eating battery like no-body's business. EliteMod seems to be much more tweaked as it's the same setup Nik3r is using for his own personal Desire-Z.
But far as stability goes, I would agree that going with a Ginger rom would be the best bet, ICS right now is still too experimental in my opinion.
I've never tried the CM7 version of EliteMod, only the official CM 7.2.0 which was ok-ish for me. The EliteMod ICS Rom to me feels much faster and responsive than even the stock CM7rom, and I much prefer QuickPix app the EliteMod uses over that slow-arse Gallery app in CM7.
I would recommend andromadus mimicry (ics) its pretty stable and everything works (for me at least). It has the ics specific flaws like scrambled text in app drawer but launcher restart fixes it. Using this rom for 2 weeks and had this text issue 1 time. Battery is good also

You should try Elitemod cm7 it has never failed me, all the features you need, speed and stabiity plus amaizing battery life. If you wanna go ICS get the cm9 elitemod, but it is still a bit buggy.
I tried a lot of roms, and I always came back to ILWT CM7 (not new versions). Sense roms are quite good but not on Desire Z (too small amount of ram memory, multitasking on sense roms are poor - even on sense 2.1 roms with supercharger script). I waiting for stable CM9 (and yes i tried all versions of CM9 but text glitches and manually change apn to send/receives mms, makes me nervous).
That is only my subjective opinion
Anything CM7 based is very stable. Probably the most stable of all. Stay away from CM9 or anything ICS on this phone for another few months in terms of stability.

Try Quadrasense! Not true that rom based on CM9 is not stable....
Quadrasense is very fast and stable

For most stable overall rom I would recommend the latest ILWT CM7. For most stable ICS rom I would recommend the Andromadus Mimicry rom.
