can someone please explain to me whats the Hype with the Htc Thunderbolt? isnt it basically a Evo with a bump in Ram and Verizon suppose Lte Network? More or less what we have had with the evo for a while now.?
Pretty much.
The core is a newer generation so its comparable to the Evo shift.
Not worth $200 with two year.
It's hyped because verizon is finally getting something to compete with us

8GB internal storage plus a bit more RAM. Looking at the specs that appears to be it, apart from LTE insetad of WiMAX. Even has the same Snapdragon processor.
Oh, there's template support for emails on the Evo but not the Thunderbolt, but who really uses templates anyway?
Unless Verizon puts a crapload of bloat on it, it might actually perform better than the Evo because of the reduced number of apps no one cares about (Navigation, NFL, NASCAR, etc.)

I believe the snapdragon in the thunderbolt is a bit newer generation than the evo.
Verizon is enough reason to forget using the thunderbolt

Anyone who truly believes this, is an ass. The Thunderbolt is better than any Sprint phone that's out, spec wise. EVO's development is the true gem, for now. It's the only reason I still post in here, even though I have other daily drivers. Give credit where credit is due. Sprint will get their just desserts soon, trust me.

An ass why?
Will all due respect, the HTC Thunderbolt is the Evo Shift with an LTE radio.
Is that bad?
No.
Is it worth $199.99 with a two-year agreement?
Considering what we KNOW is coming very soon, no.

Actually it got the new sense as well and 1 gbz snapdragon (not the same as the evo , this is the new version ,which the shift 4G has lower ) and the shift 4G got something between the old sense and the new one but not desire hd sense tho

Well that only matters if you care about sense, but it's been suggested [and is completely realistic] that the Evo/Evo Shift will be getting the new sense.
As far as the core it's pretty much the same exact one as in the Evo Shift except instead of clocked at 800 mhz it's clocked at 1GHZ.
So, at best, it's an extremely minor spec bump from the Evo Shift.
That extra 200MHz is all that's needed to possibly get a Gingerbread update...

Well the extra MHz doesn't really give u update as Google said it they never put how much you CPU has to be to run gingerbread 800GHz should be more then enough , it all depends on HTC and Sprint

People seem to be in denial that the Evo isnt the best phone on the market anymore. And honestly the LTE alone was enough to make me switch. If you want to see the huge differences, look at the benchmark comparisons on youtube between the thunderbolt and the evo. It's not even remotely close.
Thunderbolt has a fatter kickstand and they put a larger speaker behind the kickstand. Pretty neat.
The HTC Thunderbolt (ADR6400 codename "Scorpion or Mecha") will be the first 4G LTE smartphone on Verizon Wireless. It is a CDMA variant of the HTC Desire HD. It was first announced at CES on January 6, 2011. This phone is to be considered the flagship phone for Verizon, going head to head with the HTC EVO.
In addition to 4G service, the Thunderbolt will be the first Verizon phone to support simultaneous Voice/Data over 3G without the help of Wi-Fi.
You can run gingerbread on your phone clocked down to 250 MHz. Animations will be choppy but it'll run just fine. So all this B.S. about mhz is b.s.

To be fair, simultaneous voice and data over 3G will be possible with Sprint as well. Verizon just happened to drop a phone that will use it first. The chipset wasn't ready when EVO was in production.Inspire 4G and HTC Thunderbolt is of the same cloth, but a minor spec to the EVO Shift, which is a carbon copy of the G2? That's just inviting the flames. Verizon's answer to the EVO was the Droid X, not the TB. People don't understand how long the EVO was being worked on by HTC and Sprint. It was a true flagship. HTC Pyramid is a true flagship, so keep your eyes on it at CTIA.

You mean that made up patched up coverage map of roaming agreements?
my 3g and 4g speeds are crazy, i normally get between 800k-1.1mbps on 3G and like 7 or 8mbps on 4G. the last major 3G speedtest done rated At&t 1st over 3G (where its available), and Sprint came in at 2nd place. ive NEVER had any signal issues with sprint. And i travel frequently. the truth of the matter is the Sprint vs Verizon battle is never ending, but at the end of the day, it only matters if it works where YOU need it to work at.
Now, I will say that we all know about sprints recent 3G data speed troubles, but im sure they will have it fixed soon. ****ty, but true.
As far as the thunderbolt goes, Im not envious of it at all. The new Snapdragon core + more ram is better, but other than the its just the Evo, with a LTE radio in it. Better than the Evo? yes. Enough to make me switch? No chance
Just watched a demo of the MOTO Atrix dual core....wow the scrolling is horrible. Side by side with the Epic, the differences are HUGE! It's hard not to smile knowing that the EPIC still dominates even dual core offerings.
I noticed it's an ATT "4G" phone, so after going to ATT site and clicking their 4G link, it took me to a map of blue colored coverage, which oddly enough looks EXACTLY like their 3G coverage. Upon further examination, that's EXACTLY what they show you, the 3G coverage. There are but a small handful of cities that actually implement TMOs HSPA+ '4G'. Just like apple, att using their 'full of ****' marketing practices. It's really sad how much $ apple and att has made selling inferior hardware and service for twice that of which I pay for the Epic on Sprint.
I have 2 Epics, with unlimited everything (except the landline 1500min pool), and both phones plans combined is cheaper than 1 iphone with unlimited everything, except the 4GB worth of data. And that's 3G data!
Man that's so sad. I can't believe how many fools there are out there.
Samsung can't get Froyo right to save their life, but even the Eclair Epic is a better choice than the Atrix.
Atrix makes sammiches tho

My friend who I have known for 8 years bought the Atrix with the Dock and everything spending $500+. Personally, I would have not invested so much in a device that is not going to easy to make custom kernel's for. Matter of fact, its a locked boot loader which means you are screwed. Even Cyanogen himself said today that he would support the device had it not been for that fact. Still, its kinda cool, but makes developing for it a lot ( LOT ) harder than it should be.
Yet they make the XOOM developer friendly. Go figure, why would they not choose this with the phone? Do we have the provider to blame? Is it what they want for their phone systems, or are we just being put to a test to see how far developers can push the envelope with the newest phones to make custom roms/kernels?

Honestly, I can not stand AT&T. They have the same pricing as Verizon, yet they're inferior (network wise) to Sprint. The only reason they had a chance in the mobile market industry is because of the iPhone (which I still prefer Android over).
Now that Verizon has iPhone, ATT will probably be bought out by another carrier, or something weird.

LOL -- ATT....did someone just defend ATTs service???
Sprint's CLEAR division has LTE in Phoenix running 100Mb down and peak 47Mb uploads.........ATT probably runs their whole network off of one of the LTE connections.
There will always be someone who lives in a dead zone. WiMax ins't there yet, but between Sprint and Verizon's networks, Phoenix couldn't be covered any better. Roms allow for forced roam, which I had on my WinMo 6.5 phone.....and could switch between networks and roam 3G if I had a Sprint issue. It made for the most robust phone I've ever seen anyone in possession of (TP2 was quad band).

Their 'enhanced' 3G is quite fast....Got over 5Mb on my sisters Samsung Tab sitting 100ft in front of the tower....2Mb up. Damn't Sprint, unlock our WiMax UPLOAD already.......bandwidth is clearly available up and down, it won't do jack to the network if they let us full duplex. I mean, it's a phone..... I couldn't imagine FB pic uploads swamping the network with just a fraction of the HD YouTube streaming

Almost all store employees are dumb at any carrier.
What counts for sprint and tmobile is that they dont disconnect your service if you dont pay wkthing 2-3 days.I can be 2 weeks late with sprint and not get charged extra and not even have a warning from sprint.
Plus on sprint and tmobile I can download 80gb of movies a month, they dont have data cap.So if you use your phone as your primary internet then tmo and sprint is only choices.
I just wish I dint leave tmobile for sprint because speed was way faster on tmobile, and my promised sprint's 4g never came.

The atrix is a far more powerful device, but the first true dual cores will be powered by omap4 and perhaps 3rd Gen snapdragons or tegra3's. That's when it all really begins.
I work for a company that provides cell service and my 2 years contract is expiring soon. I am eligible for a new device. I have had a Droid X on my personal plan, but plan to sell it once I get the upgraded business device.
Here is what my company supports - which one should I get and why?
AT&T - Apple iPhone 4 32GB Black
AT&T - HTC Inspire 4G
AT&T - HTC Tilt 2
Sprint - HTC EVO 4G
T-Mobile - myTouch 4G Black
T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4G
Verizon - Apple iPhone 4 32GB
Verizon - Thunderbolt by HTC
Verizon - LG Vortex
Verizon - LG Ally
Verizon - Motorola Droid 2 Global
Not much of an option, IMO. TIA.
What's important to you? Keyboard? Battery?
As mrkite said, what's important to you? AT&T in this area, NYC Metro, still has poor service and a 2gB data cap so scratch their phones for me. T-Mobile is probably going to be gobbled up by AT&T so they're out.
The iPhone doesn't have a user replaceable battery and it wouldn't last me through the day, that and the Thunderbolt (which has poor battery life) are off the list. I'd also rather have Android over Apple.
The LG phones are pretty old so that leaves the Droid 2 Global. I have a Droid X and really want an LTE phone but don't see one that I like yet. Maybe by September.
My droid x has decent battery life -
what's important: battery life, coverage, 4g, android (gb preferred), software keyboard.
You're not impressed with the bionic or other 4g phones out now or soon?
I'm weary of the bionic, as I'm not particularly happy about the screen (pen-tile), web top shadow os and the distinct possibility of a locked bootloader. So, if possible, I would wait for the next round of phones, or wait for a sgs II, that looks amazing. If not, get a thunderbolt. It has tons of dev's working on it and they do make extended battery's.

+1 for the Evo. Rom of choice, MIUI! No 4geez, but it is buttery smooth and battery life is superb. No data cap is pretty darn swell too, and Sprint seems to be pretty stinkin root friendly.
(Or hope your company allows the Evo 3D soon...)
Sprint - HTC EVO 4G I know HTC battery sucks but this was what I was going to get before we made the switch to Verizon
If you can, I would wait as long as possible, and see if any better choices come out before you need to upgrade. The Thunderbolt it a nice-ish phone, but it doesn't have dual-core...
Maybe if Motorola comes out with a new, dual-core, 4G phone, with an unlocked bootloader...and maybe a supermodel will knock on my door tonight...

There actually is 4g. It says so in its name......
hi, guys/.. i need to make a decision about which phone to get. i'm torn between the HTC EVO 4G and the HTC Inspire 4G. whats important for me is battery life and camcorder and camera quality. i got 3 questions:
1) if optimized with the best roms and kernels for each, which is the best one in terms of batt life?
2) again, if optimized with best roms and kernels, which is the best one in terms of smoothness of camcorder and camera quality?
3) can i use the front camera on the EVO 4G for video chat?
4) do you use video chat a lot?
.
Quite obviously, asking in an Evo 4G forum won't get you biased answers. Just saying.
Yeah, I'd hope you'd be asking the same question in the Inspire 4G forums as we, over here, can 'mostly' speak for what we know. The Evo has great dev support / following and I can't be bothered to look (not that it would even be representative of the Inspire support) if it's even similar.
I would first look at providers / carriers. AT&T kind of sucks ... then again, as some will tell you, Sprint doesn't have the greatest coverage in certain areas. I'd first look past the phone options, and on to coverage. I love Sprint, not only because I get good coverage here, but also due to the unlimited data. But that may not be the case for you. Overall, the Inspire may be a better device but I can't be bothered to look. If you are serious about joining Sprint, maybe you'd consider the EVO 3D? Entirely a better phone, yet still waiting on root. Chances are, unless you should get lucky, you'd end up with an un-rootable Evo. In time, though ....
I wouldn't necessarily look, first, to the phones. The Evo is a dated device, no denying that, but still solid. So before you lock yourself in anywhere ...
don't worry about the phones. focus on the service.
Sprint has unlimited 4g data ATT don't
ATT has faster 4g
Sprint is cheaper.
ATT may have better coverage in your area..... maybe it doesn't make a difference. I live i philly. I never have a problem with coverage, even 4g unless I'm undeground which noone has coverage.
I suggest you start with sprint and if you aren't happy with the service return your phone with in 30 days get your money back and go to ATT.
But signing a two year contract you really should get a phone that will be decent in two years. You ain't going to want a evo 4g in two years. Evo 3d on the other hand will blow any HTC on any carrier out of the water right now
Why are these your only two options?
Neither are great choices as of right now imo...

it all depends if you wanted to root right away.. The Evo 4g shipped from Sprint is now only shipped with the OTA 2.3.3 which is unrootable atm. Hopefully soon as there seems to be alot of progression going on.
The Inspire 4g I dont know much about because I've always wanted an Evo when I started with an Android Phone.. LG Optimus S was my 1st android and now the Evo which is making me mad because I cant root yet.. thanks to HTC locking the bootloader

I love my evo. There is a huge and great development community behind it. Which is a huge plus when your looking to root, there's also alot of accesories etc.

1. inspire has a slightly better batt life but only by minutes.
2. camera is about the same
3. yes u can use the evo's ffc for video chat i have used skype, qik and gtalk
4. once or twice a week.
Also another thing to note is the inspire does have sense 2.1 stock and the evo does not. But with a custom rom u can get sense 2.1 or 3.0 on the evo.
ONE HUGE PROBLEM with the inspire is their is a bug where the newest firmware was supposed to unlock non market installs but on some phones the option is still locked. HTC and att do not have a date on when this will be fixed. So what this means is if u get a inspire with this bug u will not be able to install apps from the sd card or the amazon market, U will only be able to install apps thru the android market. This to me makes the choice pretty clear evo all the way
Just get the evo 3D
I would agree with the EVO 3d statement and the plan suggestions. Right now Sprint is the only carrier offering unlimited data plans. Which is pretty huge considering how many things are going cloud based now. Music Beta, Amazon, Spotify, Netflix, Google Movies, etc.. This is more important than ever now.
However, if you never see yourself using these services its really a moot point.
Of course, If you do go with sprint, I'd suggest getting the 3d over the evo if you can spare the extra hundo. Its a way more powerful phone.
To those comparing 4G of Sprint and AT&T...
Aren't they both NOT true 4G? The carriers are just marketing it as 4G because it's faster than 3G. If I remember correctly, 4G is supposed to be between 100mb/s and 1gb/s. The technologies we see right now are considered pre-4g, since they only get up to 144mb/s (144 for WiMAX, 100 for LTE) I'm taking this from the 4G wiki page: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
And yes I know AT&T isn't on either yet... they use HSPA+ which shouldn't even be considered 4G at all lol

And yes I know AT&T isn't on either yet... they use HSPA+ which shouldn't even be considered 4G at all lol

people are trying to that the phones are similar enough where you should focus on the carriers.
yes the front camera can be used for video chat. I personally don't see the big deal behind it but if thats your cup of tea then ok. Judge camera quality for yourself by asking to see pictures taken from each phone.
But really all the differences are slight enough where service and price are the biggest noticable differences.

1. My evo got 26 hours of battery life today, before I finally charged it.
2. The sense 3.0 camera takes some absolutely beautiful pictures. I don't really have a good way to rate that, lol
3. Yes
4. Yes
I love my evo. There is a huge and great development community behind it. Which is a huge plus when your looking to root, there's also alot of accesories etc.
Sprint has true 4g that is very easy to turn on off.

i want to get the EVO 4G on Metro PCS. but i want to make sure that MMS and GPS work on Metro PCS. but importantly, i got to make sure that a custom ROM for it can enhance batt life. all this with sense 3.0.

Any drawbacks to the Epic 4G compared to an ATT SGS2? I'm sick of my phone, which is capable of 18Mbit, only performing at 1.5Mbit on AT&T's crappy network. I'm planning to pay the ungodly $325 cancellation feel, and selling the phone on ebay. Any reason I shouldn't???
Yeah, sprints network is not that great either. I guess it depends on where you live. The Sprint plans price is nice though, and they are going to have LTE by 2013, with new phones to work with it by summer 2012.

Are you sure you don't mean the Epic 4G touch? Because this is last years phone. Going from a 1.2 GHz dual core phone to a single core 1 GHz phone with less support would be pretty stupid lol. You may want to ask people at the Epic 4g Touch forum about signal stength.
