time and $...
Last Wednesday my Focus fell victim to my dumb arse! I had it in my dress shirt breast pocket and as I bent over to pick up laundry in basement is slid out and landed flush with the concrete floor. It made a simple, solid, thud. I watched it fall but missed it while trying to grab it. I knew it was toast cause it landed directly on the screen, not on the sides at all. I picked it up to see the screen shattered. The cracks through out had very sharp edges. There were very small shards on the floor and small gaps in phone's screen where they were missing.
However... The phone still worked, touch response and accuracy was still 100% pre-break. The cracks on a white back ground looked horrible. The cracks on a black back ground were almost invisible. When phone was off, only where a nice ~.5mm wide 4.5mm long gap was visible at all angles. The glass looks to be 1-2 mm thick based on the appearance of the cracks when looking at an angle. It looks much thiner then I thought it was.
I contacted AT$T for advise, they gave me Samsung Repairs phone number. I called them. I told them the truth how it broke. Admitted fault, etc... They told me it would be $156.78 to replace the screen. He put me on hold for ~4min and he came back and told me that since I was still under warranty and only had for 6 months that they were charging me $70.36. They took the payment over phone via credit card. They emailed me a UPS Ground label. They told me it would take 5-7 days once they get it, to ship it back to me (5-7 days return shipping if UPS ground). I paid $5 to USPS to priority it to them. I didn't want 5 days of UPS shipping time added to my wait.
Now, her is the interesting part. I used the chevron.updater to put NODO on my phone. I had no issues at all and was very happy with the update. My phone had no other mods or tools used on it. They told me my phone would be restored to original factory state before returning it to me. Do you guys (I do) think it will return with NODO still on it? Or will they notice and re-flash the ROM? OR, do they just send a refurbished devise back as standard procedure?
Samsung Repairs in Plano, TX received the phone on Saturday. I'm hoping they just send a refurbished back to me on Mon-Tues so I have a phone by Monday the 25th. I assume the ship back UPS ground, 5-7 days.
The Focus is my first smartphone. I'm currently using my old phone, LG Xenon. It feels like I bought the best gaming rig out there and hooked up to 56K modem. Talk about withdraw.... My focus was saving me on average an hour a week in drive times to and from work alone with the bing map/traffic feature. I look forward to my next upgrade just so my backup phone can at least be comparable to the new one. I will post an update if I get word from Samsung, any change in price or delays, and when it gets returned with my opinion of the experience.
70 bucks is NOT bad I just sent my phone in and I'm also sending my hd2 in soon
$70 plus small shipping charge is darn good price. Be happy with a fix or refurb replacement because it could have cost a whole lot more !
UPS will take 3 days tops. So once the phone is ship it will be just a small wait.
wow.. My previous phone was a Motorola Q9h and the three times I sent it in via warranty I paid nothing. I guess user inflicted damage incurs a fee.
Oh man I dropped my phone inside a beer cup on Saturday. Took it out quickly and dried it but then the flash starting going crazy on and off and the phone was acting like it was connected to a charger.
Thankfuly the next day it was fine after it dried BUT the volume rocker is not working to go down in volume only up.
I wonder if Samsung can fix this for me??
Yep, same here, I dropped mine on gravel last month. But I was charged the full $156 ($70 std repair fee + $80 lcd repair fee + taxes). Then again, I did everything online from Samsung's website and not over the phone.
From the time I shipped my phone to the time I got it back was about 10 days (including weekend). And I live about 15 miles away from the Plano repair facility... my work is even closer! But they wouldn't let me drop it off or pick it up...
Michael.

The best thing you can do if you drop your phone in a liquid is remove the battery and bury the phone in a bag of rice for a week. The rice will absorb all the moisture out. But if you try to power on your phone before everything is fully dry, then the damage may already be done. I was told this tip by a friend of mine that works for Nokia.
Michael.
Yes the rice trick is well known. Pass it around so more will know about it.
Rice is OK but Damprid is better
I have another alternative to the rice method. Instead of using that use a product called Damprid. Works way better than rice. Don't submerge your phone in rice but place your phone on top of it and then seal it up in a Tupperware container. Within 24 hours every drop of moisture will be out of the phone. Plus it's on $10 for a huge container of the stuff. It's worked on many phones.

I just did the unthinkable!! I dropped my hour old titan in the toilet... but here's the problem I have disassembled everything and made sure it is perfectly dry but it still wont work. All I need to know is:
On the OEM battery is there a water damage indicator?
On the top of mine there is a red dot to the left of the contacts, could some benevolent soul take their battery out and see if there is a red dot on the top and possibly post a picture???
Thanks a million!!
A picture isn't really necessary, could someone just tell me whether or not their battery looks like this
Mine is white
If the only water damage indicator is on the battery, maybe you could just get a replacement battery first.
Best option is insurance, but it might be a little late for that.
#@$% hum I wonder where I could by a new battery before I try to return it... Thanks for your help!!!
Paypal $25 to [email protected] and I'll mail you mine. I got two through an insurance accident. that includes shipping to the US...
there is a water damage indicator, it's a white sticker under the battery, if it's blue, they won't replace it, they don't cover water damage even with insurance.
best bet, and tell me you got insurance and if you didn't call htem said it's an hour old, get insurance added.
then claim it was run over by a truck, and get a new unit.
oh, there was an article on gizmodo or lifehacker that talked about how to dry out a device was literally put it on rice for a few days.
mine is white too
I would almost be certain that there are other water damage indicator strips inside the device in addition to the one on the battery.
Too Funny
As I would like to remain professional and will refrain from using every smiley face in the list to the right 1000 times. And I also would like to say how much I feel your pain. I absolutely must ask: What were you doing on the toilet with your titan only an hour after buying it??!! <end roflmao>
If your mogul is brand new, call them up and tell them that you want the insurance. You have something like 30 days or something to get the insurance. They will then just replace the phone.
White dot on mine as well.

What I was on the toilet with my mogul within the first hour as well...hell on the toilet with my Mogul as we speak....ahhh hell I never go to the toilet without it...now if only I had brung some tp along
ewww, your phone smells like poopy.
Play DUMB.....thats the best thing to do....if it really was only an hour before take it back play dumb ..."its not working?"...
I had a "friend" who did this at BB after running a Sanyo 4900 over with a truck.....
YES... it worked....
I have not confirmed that this works but I heard that if you get a ziplock baggie and put the pieces in it with Silicate packets for over 24 hours that it will absorb the moisture out. Make sure you squeeze all the air out. A buddy said it turned the red dots white again for him.

Verizons insurance will cover water damage. Besides if they didn't you can tell them it was "lost," they cover that also.
It's done!
Thanks for all the help guys!! I went and bought a new battery at altel (I'm with sprint) then dried the phone over night with rice, then blew it out with a CO2 duster. The cool thing is, after all that the phone WORKED!!! not very well though so I took it back and said I bought it the day before and the screen was jacked up.... they didn't even open it... (It was running at the time so i guess they didn't suspect water damage)
and for all of you who were wondering I was reaching from the sink across the toilet to grab a towel and knocked it in (after playing hacky sack with it for like 5 seconds....)
Again thanks for all the help, I'm going to try the silicate gel thing and see if I can return the battery I ruined
FYI - Water damage appears to be covered for Sprint customers...
I had my (first) Mogul from 5-2007 through 12-2007, when a very unfortunate thing happened...it leaped from my hip into the only water for *at least* one square mile. I phoned Asurion (Sprint's insurance provider) and explained the occurance (I hadn't previously even considered that water damage might not be covered). Simply stated...they sent me a new phone and I paid the 'deductable' and all was right...except for the lackluster performance of this particular device
sprint covers water damage, but only if u have the Equipment Replacement Plan...not Equipment Service plan. the ERP covers just loss and water damage, and it is only $4 by it self..another type of insureance is also avalible, it includes both ERP and ESP and it costs $7.
I'm an idiot.
I've had this phone for all of, 3 weeks. I've been paying attention to Android since it was announced and was just waiting for money to fall in to place. A few days ago I was at work (I'm a manager at Arby's) and I bent over a toilet to pick some trash up and with my phone in my chest pocket, it slipped and conviently landed with a plop. Luckily the toilet wasn't used and I grabbed it and started shaking it, getting it dry as soon as possible. It was touch and go at first, and after I put it in rice I thought it was bricked. I left it charging for a few hours this morning out of desperation and to my surprise it works, but the screen is really dark, and the hardware buttons are acting a little odd. I was wondering if anyone knew of any replacement back light services?
Also, I'm running CM 4.2.4 and was wondering if running custom firmware does anything to T-Mobile's insurance through Asrion?
Thanks for any and all help.
Well you are an idiot
Try cnn.cn for a replacement screen. Although, I think its more than the screen, you probably fried your board too.. Call or go into a T-Mo tomorrow to see what's up, but unless you have insurance, warranty doesn't cover water damage. Best of luck! I would probably kill myself if I did something that is easily preventable to my Magic (which will arrive Wednesday)
z
You can also google "HTC MAGIC REPLACEMENT PARTS"
You'd probably find what you're looking for, eh?
I put mine in the washing machine and I got the same result, phone works but I have 0 backlight and the end button is wonky. Got my replacement phone today.
Did it go well? I'll assume they'll just send me a check for the amount, not replace it since it's not really sold anymore?
I dropped mine in water, and I'm letting it dry in rice, but I'm debating just filing the claim today because even if it starts to work, I don't know that I want to keep a phone that may have future issues from this accident.
I have. My gf (wife now) ran my phone through the wash by accident. SquareTrade doesn't care if your phone is being sold or not. They will give you a shipping label to ship the phone back to them so they can verify that its broken and you pay a deductible of (i think) $50usd and then within about 3-4 days after they get the phone back you get a paypal for the amount of the phone. $530USD
There's a tip that I've heard but been fortunate enough never to need re: water.
Instead of letting it sit in rice, remove the battery, sim, microSD and submerge the device in alcohol, like isopropyl alcohol, not drinking. I don't recall how long.
The theory is that the alcohol will displace the water and then evaporate more readily and thoroughly than water when left to dry.
Still trying to get feedback on the theory.
Re: the alcohol. Had I had any on hand right when it happened, I would have done it, but after a about 5 hours when I got home I didn't want to resubmerge it in any liquid.
But, the good news is, after 30 hours of air drying I rebooted and all is well.
Yup,
I dropped the Streak on a tile floor and it hit flat on the screen. It was dead right then and there, you could tell the thing was still running but only the left part of the screen had any activity on it and you could not do a dang thing. This was on Wednesday.
Called Dell they said the would give me a new one for ................. $250 US.
WOW, no way....
Called ATT and they said the warranty started from the day I turned the phone and then realized it was a Dell Streak and sent me to Dell. So, that was a dead end.
So I did some research and saw that you can get them from all over the work from around $110 to $175, with tools without tools, in a few days or by the end of the month. I had to think about this.....
So, I called a local shop that works on APPLE devices and other phones and asked what he can do for me. He asked who made the phone and who sells the phone blah.....blah.....and then came back and said, he can have a new screen for me the next day. He did and the cost was $175, again, I had to think about this, but I had only till 5PM that day to get back with him.
So, over to BestBuy I go to see what is the deal with getting a new phone for $99. They said I am cannot upgrade till April and at that time, I could get the phone for $99. I was not wanting to wait, then they said I could get a new number to add to my contract and get the phone for $99, not really what I wanted to do. So, I call the shop that could get me the screen.
So, I call the shop up and spoke with them about a new screen. Everything was a go and I went to work the next day. After work I made my way to Harry's Telecom and they had the new LCD screen waiting for me. It was shipped from California, just for me. . I picked up the screen and the tools I needed and went home to void my warranty that reall was not worth **** to start with.
So, I got home and started the process of taking the phone apart, it was a piece of cake, I did not really give two ****s for the phone at this point so wen I got to the LCD and had to remove it, I went full bore at it and ended up splitting the Gorilla glass and LCD glass from the LCD. That is some tough glass, it really is strong.
TIPS:
When you pry the ends of the phone off do not pry around the glass at all, only pry from the end of the phone or the top or bottom of the plastic ends. Do not shove the pry tool up under the plastic too far or you will dislodge the double sided tape and you may have to replace it, if so good luck to you, or just get a case that covers it all up.
When you are remove the cables for the screen and what is attached to the motherboard, two of the cables have clamp that can be lifted to let you pull the cables more easily. They also allow the assembly to go much easier. If my memory is correct, the two smaller flat cable have this clamp. It is part of the motherboard and sits on top of the flat cable, use your fingernail to pull the clamp up, it is nothing more than a flat plastic piece.
The screen can seem to be a ***** to pull off. Have a look around the screen and you will see five (5) metal pieces shaped like the letter C, only with three flat sides. remove these hold downs and then you should be able to pull the screen out fairly easily. One of them may not come off, this is the center hold down on the side that has three of the hold down, just leave it and pull the screen out, it will need to be pushed back on when you install the new screen.
Also, take really good photos of the buttons. Camera, power, and volume as they will fall out of the case and your photo will show you how to put them back into the case as your put every thing back together.
END of TIPS
The folks at Harry's Telecom were very nice to me and I know the price I paid was high at $175 US. I was told that any future purchases for the screens will be much lower, I think around $125 or so as they will now be stocking the part. So, feel free to give them a call if you need to replace your screen.
It is a local shop in Darby, PA, just out side of Philly.
In all I was down for three days.

Alperin1
Well Guys the day has come where I have cracked my first phone. I was working and it fell a good 4ft onto a concrete floor face first. I have dropped my phone plenty of times but I guess this one finally did it. Thankfully it's not that bad as I just have a technicolor rainbow on the top of my screen. I can deal with it until I get a new screen. But just wanted to rant!
Damnnnnnnnnnn, sorrry to hear that bro!! Have you already ordered a new screen?
A couple of weeks ago I wanted to sell my Streak and took the pics, created the add( I know.. bad decision) but then it made a sudden unpredicted drop from around 50 cm (1.5 ft?) out of my pocket onto the tiles at home.
Nothing seemed to be wrong with it but after two hours or so the camera connection broke apparently as it wouldn't connect with the camera. Whenever I activated the camera app, the device would get very hot at the front and back cam region, the battery suddenly freaked out. If I made a phone call it would drop from 100 to 1% in less than a minute but if it was used as a mp3 player I could listen for at least a couple of hours. Charging went extremely fast, but discharging as well.
After a couple of days I sent it back to store as a RMA and just received the conformation today that it will be delivered tomorrow!
Anyways, my parents and friends laughed at me and said the Streak committed suiside ......The lesson I learned in my case: 1. Don't ever sell the Streak, 2. Don't drop it and you will be a happy man for a looooooong time.
That sucks man. I've been lucky enough to not have dropped mine yet.
However, I've received a line of faulty ones. Dell is shipping out my 5th replacement device!
I've given up on screen protectors. I keep having to ship them back to Dell. F it. I'll trust Gorilla Glass to be tough enough.

just use those from Xtreme guards, they really great and you can reapply them! There are also a couple of alternatives, they use the same material but I find Xtreme guards to be the cheapest with great quality.
I've never used Guards on any of my phones. I will not ever unless I like the way it looks. Anyway. I am going to go ahead and order a new LCD and possibly try repairing it myself but I am very iffy about that.
been there. Actually got Dell to replace my Streak when it happened, but it took over a month! But I've been careful since.
I broke my Phone on the front about a month ago ... it was in my Jeans back pocket and I bent to pick up my kid from floor and went on to squat posture ... and heard a feeble cracking sound! I knew instantly, it happened. When removed, to my bad, it was found the same. Ran to the Dell Service next day morning (I am in Hyderabad, India now) and bought my Dell Streak when I was in US. I had to pay around 250$ (including $60 US to India warranty transfer) and they instantly replaced the device (except my old battery).
