OK, so I think I'm boned... I picked up my Xoom in a hurry today while the USB cord was attached and yanked it out with extreme force (totally forgot I was debugging, )
It's a Verizon 3g, purchased about 6 weeks ago and no warranty (I THOUGHT I'd be more careful, ug).
It looks like the right corner of the usb plug is broken/chipped. I get no response plugging it in now.
I could probably deal without having USB other than I've been coding on it and using ADB on it is extremely handy. I never got around to rooting it, so I can do that either (nor it seems can I enable wireless ADB without SU, damn damn damn).
It looks like Moto has a default 369$ flat fee for out-of-warranty repair which is INSANE. I could probably by the whole board for that much!
Any idea? Anyone?
I'd consider replacing the USB plug myself if there is a decent "how to" or at least how to crack this thing open and where do I get the parts, etc.
Or what's the odds of Verizon replacing it as a "defect"? What would happen if it broke using the Moto Dock? I really hate this micro usb, just to f-n small. (I wanted to get a dock for this reason but of course, no usb out!)
Sorry for the ramble, I'm just beside myself right now. ANY help/suggestions is appreciated...
Not sure if this is possible but could you maybe purchase some sort of after sale warranty or insurance and claim on that?

How could my 5-6 week old HTC EVO already have charging issues ? when i got home tonight I plugged in the factory HTC usb charger and heard a click.....
well guess what no the little "Charging" light does`nt come on unless I wrap the wire under the phone, this will not be good in the car....
Bringing it to a Sprint store is not an option as i`m not on a plan,i`m one of the
other customers
is there a repair center ? or should i buck up another 60 bucks for a charging mat

I really dont see how you can be complaining then, since you dont even pay for service...
If I'm correct $35 should cover any repair when you don't have insurance.

Yep, pay the $35 and then ask to add TEP...or not, depending on your perspective, it may or may not be worth it.
or you can always fix it yourself.

Thank you for the information, I looked into the charging mat and that is not an option as it too utilizes the micro usb jack, and with the new back on the phone that it requires makes my Seidio Innocase Holster Case Combo useless...It seems the charging mat people don't have a holster available (yet??) Anyways if i position the phone just right its taking a charge, but still , poor design for sure on HTC`s part here...I will look into having it repaired or order a jack and attempt tit myself I guess....Happy Holidays to all
I have been unable to turn on or charge my samsung epic 4G SPH-D700. Here is the facts. It is a sprint pcs phone, and I used it on the sprint network with no modifications to it or custom software. I have been using an Seido 3300 mAh battery for about a month.
Found out that I can charge it if I can manage to get the USB port in the right position, it is loose and probably needs to be replaced because the solder points broke. I was able to find the replacement USB jack.
I cannot post links right now, but the part can be found at globaldirectparts
My question is how am I going to solder those small contacts. I have a solder iron and have soldered dc jacks on to laptop motherboards so I have some experience, but these contacts are just so small, anybody have experience / recommendations for soldering the new jack on?
I like to use a jewelers loupe when soldering very small components and of course you will need an extremely fine tip.

I've tried ordering things from globaldirectparts. They always email me back saying they are out of stock even after I've paaid and I had to wait almost 2 weeks to get the money returned to my account.

still under warranty? may not even cost to replace for a faulty usb.
I bought the phone used and I am currently with virgin mobile. You are right, I could just signup for sprint service with insurance, and make a claim after a few days, but it's something I know I can fix and plus I want to unlock it and use it for boost mobile.
It might still be under warranty? I'll have to see how to make an ram for that.
I can see the contacts very well with my glasses, I mainly need to stabilize it for the de soldering braid.
What have other done to get it replaced in the past? The website isnt very helpful...
This should help..

They sell the power adapters at my local Walmart
When you say busted, what's the problem? I know that new, straight out of the box, mine wasn't working. I took a closer look at it and apparently one of the contacts was slightly misaligned. I straightened it with a small screwdriver and that fixed things. I really do wish they just shipped with a standard plug instead of the swappable prongs.
The tip broke apart. Scared the hell out of me too cause part of it got stuck inside the tablet. THank god i was able to get it out.

This exact thing happened to me and it got stuck in the tablet. I was searching around and it seems to be happening to quite a bit of people. I called acer and told them the charger was defective and they were willing to send me a new one if I send the old one back. I called their support line: US – 866.695.2237. Their support is a bit shady though, they kept trying to pin the fault on the customer. Good luck!
I can not get my Bravo with MIUI to charge. All was going well until it just stopped charging one night and when thebattery drained that was it. No LED's turn on when plugged in or anything at all.
Is this a software or hardware issue?
Should I send this back to AT&T since I have warranty or should I try to fix this some other way?
Hey, I've had a problem like this before and the only thing left for me to do was to get a replacement. I didn't have insurance because I didn't really think about it much. BUT I was in the 90 day warranty period(thankfully). So I received my replacement phone. Which Is the same one.

I just got my Bravo back from Motorola warranty service for a borked USB port. Only took 9 months of plugging/unplugging until the port would not hold the cable connector, and (of course) would not charge or sync. Got it back in about a week, and I am much more careful with it now. BTW, I got my Bravo on Amazon with a contract extension, so AT&T was not interested in helping since I didn't buy the phone from them. If you did, they may make good on it. Otherwise, they'll probably point you to Motorola (whose first question when I called was "Where did you buy the phone?")
I did search here and other sites, and used google first...
My nexus7 is no longer being detected as a USB device, tried an a few different PCs and it charges but that's it. USB-OTG works fine so I doubt is a physical issue. This is with USB debug turned on and also booted too fastboot. I do have a warranty with the store I got it from, but can't really lock the bootloader with no USB. Anyone seen or heard of this before??

I'm having a very similar issue with my tablet. Something happened when i was charging with a car charger and now i cannot connect via USB in any way. It will only charge while the tablet is powered off. Unfortunately i cannot return it because i can't re-lock it. I don't think it's a plug issue, i swapped the audio/USB board with my wife's nexus and had the same result. Very depressing.

Well I guess you answered my question, I was trying several car chargers the other day also. Wonder if I can flash over the Google screen to remove the unlock icon?
They told me the warranty I got was for anything... hmm maybe my screen needs to crack tomorrow if I can't hide the unlock.

Put the image I took after rooting when I got it on and brought it in today. He asked what was wrong, I told him about the USB no longer working. He opened box made sure everything was there, wrote defective on a sticker and said to go get another one. New one is rooted flashed and working five, may have a little screen lift, going to open it tonight and toughen the screws

Hoping to do the same. Just waiting for fry's to get some in stock. Been sold out for two weeks now.

Sorry to revive an old thread, but any news on this issue? After charing my Nexus in the car its USB slot is now rather useless apart from not realising it's charging, and the retailer I bought it from went into administration a couple of days ago (three guesses who, you UK users) leaving me in rather a pickle...
