9th exchange, at the very least. - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone,
I need some advice or suggestions on what to do. The Mytouch 4g, as you all may know, has a lot of problems. I've done many exchanges now, and some of them were done back to back. The first few times, TMO was able to ship express for free, but now they are charging me $9.99 for regular ground shipping even though the phones that I receive are defective. I am very frustrated at this point and have been thinking about canceling all 4 of my lines with them and eating the $800 ETF. What do you guys think I should do?
You may be wondering why I have to exchange it so many times..
Unlike the fellow perfectionists that you guys are, I never exchanged a phone that had a bad screen or squeaking buttons. The first time I exchanged it was because it had two dead pixels, then the power button would no longer work, then there was a ton of dust under the screen to the point where I had trouble seeing the top left corner where my status/notification bar is, then I had wifi and reception problems, then I've had the phone either shut off or reboot on its own.
I've been running into many, many problems - and they are not always the same problem either. After the third phone, all they have been doing is sending out refurbished units that are 'pre-damaged' by the previous user. On top of that, I have to pay for shipping on each phone, plus the Zagg's invisible shield (it's about $23 with labor on installation) that I had on several of the replacement phones. After troubleshooting for hours on end with tech support, I noticed that my battery cover is loose since they had me reboot/remove battery so many times, I ended up buying the gel skin case from TMO yesterday so that the battery cover wouldn't fall off.
I would be glad to take any advice that you guys have at this point. Thank you.
Edit: By the way, I did not have any apps other than opera mini - didn't even update youtube and things like that.

The statistical likelihood of getting 9 defective devices in a row is astronomical. Truly. If you are being honest and these are all really manufacturing defects then you sir are the unluckiest ****er ever and you are never welcome to babysit my kids. I don't really have any advice except to say that if your next problem is software related, try rooting and see if that fixes it. Otherwise I would avoid crosswalks and commercial flight if at all possible. Damn dude. Unlucky...

They can offer to give you a different phone all together. Like the g2 or galaxy 4g. Just ask

Do this. Call tmobile and tell them the issue with your device. Have them do another warranty exchage, but, instead of getting it shipped, tell them that you really do not want to wait once more to receive another device shipped and that if you can go into a tmo store and pick up a warranty replacement. They shouldn't have a problem telling you yes. Have them call the store so they can tell them you will be going in to get a warranty replacement. This way for sure you wont get a refurbished device. You will be getting a brand new one out of the box. This is the way I did my warranty exchage. They even gave me an extra battery for free.

I agree with coupetastic-droid and also after your 5th replacement you should get a different phone if u want for ur replacement. Try for a g2 or even a g2x!

I tried that last time.
They no longer do warranty exchanges in store.

Yep, that courtesy ended with a new policy about 3-4 weeks ago and it can't be overridden.

TJ you crack me up. I actually went through this guys episode with a mytouch slide, 5 phones under warranty, but they never charged me a dime for shipping. The one and only issue i had with the Mytouch slide was dust under the screen. I can't remember if it was the 3rd or the 4th replacement i got in the mail, but that one came with dust in all four corners. Didn't even insert a SIM card in that phone just took it down to my local Tmobile store and the manager exchanged it for me. After the 5th replacement with dust i decided to sell it and replace it with a MT4G. Well it was all good for a week until my power button failed to work, 1st exchange. They made me pay the 9.99 shipping for that one. Receive the new phone and i notice the display sucks compared to my wife's MT4G. Instead of calling in to tmobile i drive down to the local Tmobile store and i show the manager my predicament ( mind you this is the same guy that was exchanging my Mytouch Slide). Nice guy orders me another MT4G, waived the shipping. 3rd phone arrives a few days later, display is washed out, but i decide to live with it. Figuring that if i exchange it again I'll get another one with the crappy display. F**K me if the power button doesn't work after two weeks. I go back to the Tmobile store and have another chat with the manager, orders me another MT4G and waives the shipping. Manager tells me, "You're the unluckiest man i've seen with a phone", and i said "yes, yes, I am." Last exchange was the charm, good screen, and the power button actually works. I honestly thought i was the only poor bastard that could be this unlucky with phones. I have to show my wife this post, so she doesn't think i'm the unluckiest man alive. You sir have just made my day. If you can i'd go to a local tmobile store and see what they can do for you. Best of luck.

First of all, nice 'Lude. I just picked up an 07 Civic Si Sedan on Saturday and I ****ing LOVE it!
2nd, are you running stock Sense or rooted? To be perfectly honest I've found the stock Sense to be much more buggy than the cm7 I've been running for the past 3 or 4 months.
My first phone had random reboots and such and a factory reset seemed to solve the issue, but I'm assuming they had you do that multiple times.
Even if the phone is fresh out of the box, do a factory reset before you use it. It might help, it did for me.
Otherwise check out cm7 or one of the Sense roms around here. Removing all the bloatware actually does wonders for stability. If you really want I can upload a nandroid of my own stock rom with the bloatware removed.

On my 3rd mt4g and I'm about ready to go back to iPhone most androids have to many hardware issues.

Thank you for your reply.
First of all, yeah.. my Lude is old news. Since then, I've switched to an S2k, but that got stolen. Now I'm in an 06 Evo.
Anyway, back on topic..
The phone is completely stock. This is the FIRST PHONE I've ever owned that I have kept stock - Why? Because I don't want to have to unroot it when I send it in for warranty repairs.

Unrooting is as simple as flashing pd15img.zip through hboot. Not that hard.
Definitely try a different rom. As I said I've found cm7 to be much more stable than stock.
Sorry about your car. I never fully got over the 95 GS-R I crashed back in 05. since then I've been driving an ls.

i got pretty bad luck with my phone. finally got a good one after like 9 exchanges and a month later the power button went out. i called them and they told me i couldnt exchange anymore cause i "had too many problems with the phone." so the rep told me that the only thing they could do left is to exchange my phone for a motorola charm.....i was like wtf why the heck would i want to downgrade my phone, which polly cost more then that piece of **** charm and it doesnt even run android...major downgrade.

Dude. That blows. Hard. I'm sorry to see that you're having so many problems with your phone and I'm glad I don't have the same luck as you. I got mine from eBay and it came in perfect condition. Never had dust under the screen, good screen, no faulty hardware, etc.
But in all seriousness, after 5 phones, I wouldn't keep it. I personally think that it's a great phone, but if I had to take it back 9 times, I'd try something else out. Ask if you can switch. It shouldn't cost you anything as long as the retail price is equivalent or lower than the MyTouch 4g, and if I'm not mistaken, it's one of the higher priced ones (rightfully, so). If you don't hate a keyboard, the G2 might be good for you, but I hear the hinge has problems and knowing your luck, the hinge would break apart upon first use. So maybe the Galaxy S 4g? I know Samsung has great hardware, even if their software is crap, as is their update schedules, but that is easily fixed with custom ROMs.
Either that, or wait and return it completely, if you're still within your return time and keep your upgrade for when the better phones come out, i.e HTC Sensation, etc, and just use something affordable off of eBay or Craigslist. Meh
Just my two cents. Sorry if it didn't help much, but I hope your luck gets better. :/

Update:
My luck has gotten worse. I received another replacement phone on April 15th. A week later, April 22nd, I noticed a dead pixel on my screen.
*Sigh* I have no idea what to do now.

You need to move on to a different device. I've never heard of anyone have so many problems with a device.

I called in and spoke to technical support. They asked me to bring the phone to a store so that they can fill out a request for warranty exchange form. However, their tone basically implied something like, "It's impossible that you are getting so many broken phones. We need to verify that your phone is really defective before we do another exchange."
I brought it to a store and the retail sales manager had no idea why technical support sent me there, and basically told me to go call customer service again. He did, however, notate that there were a few dead pixels on the screen and that there was no physical, nor was there water damage.
I then called retentions and the supervisor picks up (without any transferring either). I explained to her exactly what happened, and how technical support had sent me into the store. She told me that she has no idea why because they could have filled out the form for warranty exchange over the phone, just like the other exchanges that I have done so far.
She apologized for what happened and said that I qualify for a multiple exchange (sorry if I got the term wrong!). She said that the manufacturer would exchange my Mytouch 4g for a Motorola Charm..
I explained that it would be a MAJOR downgrade. She then submits the form for the exchange and told me that it would be shipped express free of charge.

So you getting another mt4g or the charm? I'm still teipping about them offering you a charm over a mt4g. They are nuts!

Have any of you had to send it back?

I just noticed a dead pixel on my phone... Such a bummer... Tomorrow I gotta get up early since I got my phone online.... Send it back and go to my local tmobile with the shipping slip so they can give me a new phone on the spot. This was the instructions given to me from tmobile on the phone. Hopefully everything goes smooth... Ive only owned my red monster for 3 freakin days dude!! :-(

Yeah... In fact I just did my double check phone call and now there saying only "certain" T-Mobile stores do exchanges like the way the Person I spoke to first stated. Now I gotta call t-mobile back in the morning so they can call a store that does do exchanges as long as I have a packing slip... ahh I smell a disaster lol

My phone bricked itself, but...
It might have been my fault. I got the phone from Wirefly for $75. I have had an HTC Aria since the summer and loved it, but found myself craving a bigger screen and loved the idea of WiFi calling, android 2.2 and a better camera. Unfortunately, I had problems from the beginning. At first my signal kept cycling between edge and hspa with 1 bar. Then, an ota started. I thought it completed, but I may have inadvertently left the house while it was downloading. At some point while I was on my way from Austin to Houston, the phone started cycling on and off. By the time I got to Houston, it was bricked I sent it back to Wirefly and cancelled my T-Mobile account.
i took back my white one, i had a lot of creaking on that phone at the bottom of it and plus i ended up wanting the black one over time. got tired of the white one. but here in cali u got 30 days to return ur phone after u bought it from the tmobile store, so im glad for that. if it was 14 days i would have been screwed lol. but they took my phone no problem, i just told them i wanted a black one and thats it.

That sounds very strange. I've not heard anyone else have that problem. Plus, the OTA is downloaded over the Tmob network so leaving the house shouldn't have caused anything.
I may have to exchange mine as the ffc appears to be off center (to the right).

Dude, now that you're saying that I too notice that my ffc is off to the right and not in the center JK bro, I'm pretty sure it's meant to be that way
I returned my first black one for a white one when the black one hit FC city loadin up the Faves widget
Then... returned the white (after S-Off) for another white due to creaking at the bottom!
On the 3rd one now (last exchange TMO will give me) and it feels just right
Had to send back my first one because it had two dead pixels. My ffc was also off to the right.
Got my new one today only to realize the minute i got home under better light that there are two more dead pixels. My ffc is now in the dead center.
Any advice? aren't we only able to get two returns through the t-mobile store? i know if i send it into t-mobile for any reason they'll just send me back a refurbished one

Are you within your remorse period? if so... return the ***** completely and buy it else where. and don't feel bad about it... if you are going to pay this much for a device and presumably have it for 2 years... it better be perfect now... cuz it won't get any better.

Yes, I technically have 13 days of remorse since I had to get the second phone. I have to drive 1.5 hours just for the nearest tmobile store so I called the call center and they are sending me another replacement. I just have the sick feeling that what they are going to send me is a good ol' refurb just like they do every damn time you send your phone in and they "send you a new one." this phone is perfect so far but if it has 2 dead pixels out of the box i can only imagine it will continue to get worse.

Dont worry so much..
It's way too early in the product life-cycle to get refurbs. Believe me, it takes time to get them to the centers, inspect them, do what ever repairs are necessary and recertify them and supply TMO. Supply chain cannot fulfill this fast since the device has only been out for ~2 weeks. That's one benefit of adopting early.

Quality of replacement screens

I am now a member of the "I dropped my damn phone" club. Landed face down right on top of a piece of gravel.
I have searched for and found a few sources for reasonably priced digitizers/screens and have a few concerns. I've read here and a few other places that the ones we find as consumers may be rejects from HTC. Several forums mention light leaking from the lower buttons (home/menu/back/search) and response issues.
Anyone done a replacement and found these issues? If you are satisfied with the replacement, care to share your source?
Weird that you mentioned light leaks... my first Aria had small pin hole dots beside the search button and under the menu button... drove me nuts in low light areas.
As far as the replacement screen... I dropped my phone 3 weeks ago, and got a replacement in the mail the next day from ATT. The insurance is worth it.
Good luck!

What did you tell ATT? I tried calling in to get my phone replaced. The mistake I made was adding the insurance after I dropped it, so they were not able to help me out. It happened last month. I read through ATT, they will not replace the phone if you dropped it accidentally, and the cracked screen is not preventing it from functioning properly. I want to call again and say I just dropped it so I could get a replacement. Any incite on what to say?
I got sooo lucky...well, I should find out by Tuesday. I called AT&T to see about having their repair place do the screen replacement. They advised me that I had purchased insurance and all would be taken care of (relieved/surprised). They transferred me to the repair place and they said I didn't have insurance. Got transferred back to customer service they said they screwed up when the told me that I had insurance. You bet they screwed up...long story short, they confessed that they "misled and misinformed me" and that all would be taken care of. They entered the insurance purchase as of day 1 and all I have to pay is the deductable. New phone shipping overnight (no extra charge) and they don't want the old one.
I'm still going to replace the digitizer, keeping it for me, my wife shall get the new one for Christmas!
One key factor in the negotiation is that they misled me and that I was about to go buy her a new android device anyway. Their misleading and misinformation encouraged me to consider a different device from a different carrier. That is what made them "correct their mistake" and "take care of me". I got lucky. As long as the new device makes it to my door!
I just told them my phone took a fall for the worse, explained to them the digitizer still worked, and that the screen was just really shattered! The were like okay, we will get you one out today.
Wont replace it if you "accidentally" drop it? WTF?

i dropped mine, and i had to fill out some form and get it notarized, anyone else have to do this?

my evo died :-(

this blows.
of all the crap going on in life right now, the one thing I could count on was my Evo. music, games, and kindle for the commute now that i take the train to my internship.
a couple of days ago I noticed the phone wasn't charging. if i just plugged in the power cord it wouldn't charge, but if i pulled it down, so that it would be at an angle, it would charge. but of course i couldn't keep it that way all night.
opened up the phone and found that the charging plug thing was coming off on at least three of the four big solder points. we just recently fixed my LCD tv with a cheap soldering kit so i figured we'd solder those points and it would work. no difference.
tried it twice and put the phone back together twice, it would turn on and finish loading but wouldnt charge.
opened it again, took out the one screw holding the pcb board to the screen, and looked around to see if there was anything that could be done from that side. i don't think my dad did anything there. i've checked since and nothing got even a scratch. put it back together.
this time the phone vibrates when i turn it on, but the screen never comes on.
opened it again, the charging plug had completely fallen off. the solder does not stick at all.
at this point, i don't care. i can buy a battery charger, and I can remove the memory card to transfer files. i'm happy with my rom so i could live not being able to directly hook up the phone and change system files.
but no screen?!!
so at this moment, for the first time since September, my Evo is out of commission and I can't do anything about it.
anyone know what may have happened here? any solutions? i'm willing to try any suggestions since i can't use the phone at the moment and I need it back.
thanks.
You likely could have had it fixed under HTC's warranty. But once they see it's been opened I believe the warranty is instantly void. You could take it in to the store and see if they will warranty it out and charge you the $35 advanced exchange fee.
Pretty much what he said lol. If you already opened the phone you have voided your warranty so sprint won't want to fix it neither will HTC. Your only two options are fix it yourself with parts off ebay. Second one is run it over with the car pay 100 to Asurion if you have TEP and they will send you a refurb and you send your old one back to them other then that you kinda screwed the pooch when you opend your phone up.
Hope you get it worked out.
i have agree since you cracked it open you screwed yourself :/
the phone hasn't had a valid warranty since last year...so I didn't mess it up.
my question here is what could have messed up the phone. not what messed up the warranty!
you can pick up and evo for between $150-200 on craigslist. just sell your broken one for parts, you would be shocked how many people would buy it.

EDIT: the battery was at 70%. the phone does turn on. not the screen :-(
welcome to the club. That's why I stopped buying htc. They make cheap under performing phones that are guaranteed to fail early. I love my samsung epic.
really? this is my second HTC phone. first was 8125 and I loved it so much I lost it and bought a second one. now the Evo breaks after all this (ab)use and i'm planning on buying a second one or an Evo 3D if i can afford it when it comes out.
so, i'm pretty happy with HTC products.

Well you just go enjoy your Sam****, and we'll suffer with crappy HTC phones....
Trust me your not suffering, the dude with the epic is...my big brother has it and he doesnt really like it lol. He is jumping the HTC ship,he is buying evo 3D. Samsung never responds, never update, the dev support is no where near evo support (IMO) but if I was you try to fix it or buy nexus S or evo 3D

Dev Support isn't as good???????
Maybe not on here, but this site leans more towards HTC.
The Epic Sections of SDX-Devopers is FAT with Dev support.
+1. This is my 3rd HTC phone. All worked well for me.

Why do people hate refurbished phones?

I've been lucky enough to have never needed my phone replaced and I've had over 30 or 40 phones thanks to connections at best buy.
My question is why do people hate them? Obviously your "brand new" (and i use parentheses because people think a 8 month old phone doesn't deserve a refurbished one as a replacement) has the exact same chance of not working properly. I can understand one month old but anything past that is not new anymore.

I think part of the issue with phones is that people don't want something that someone has had pressed against their cheek or stuffed in their pocket for the past few months.
This is apart from the obvious fact that a refurb it may still be broken.
I have personally had very good luck with refurbed cameras.

Honestly, because I've never received a refurbished phone that didn't fail on me within a month.
I don't care if it's "refurbished" or "new" I just want it to work 100% and not fail on me.
I'm inclined to agree that after a certain point you aren't really 'deserving' of a brand new device. I think it's simply the fact that the device isn't 'brand new and out of box' and has been 'handled.' I guess I can sort of understand why people might have a problem with it, but if it works and isn't entirely flawed in some manner, then what is the problem? I had 2 refurbished PS3's die on me in a year. Obviously I got 'lucky.' In that regard I understand why someone would be hesitant to get one. But more often than not refurbs actually work as intended. Shocking. But the practice is a tried and relatively true one.
I think you should get a freebee.. one free new phone. Anything after that.. refurbished

I just activated my refurbished phone. It took Sprint a month to get one for me. This one doesn't charge at all. The store said it would take at least a week to get me another one. When I asked what I should do about my phone in the meantime, the employee told me I could bring my phone into the store everyday to have them charge it. He was serious.
The icing on the cake is that they won't call when the new phone comes in. I'm supposed to call them everyday and ask if it's there. But the store doesn't ever answer their phone! After going through the phone tree twice, it just says "Sorry, all reps are busy, please make an appointment online." Somehow this is the only store in all of San Francisco that can even do replacements. I ****ing hate Sprint. [/RANT]

I think you should have to get a refurbished phone, then if that fails you should be allowed a new one.

From what I have expierenced, refurbished phones are rarely problem free. Thus causing people to question refurb phones and the quality control that goes into refurbishment.

Call tech support and tell them your situation and they can send you one over the phone. I have the same problem in the southbay. The store always has at least a 45 min wait before you can even get help and they never answer their phone.

You mean sorta like download a new one?? Gotta love Sprint's technology
Will they send you a phone if they can't verify the issue? Is there a specific support number you call?
I've never received a replacement "over the phone", it has always taken overnight.
Refurb'd phones are put back together poorly IMO, my wife got a replacement that started to seperate from the case, we complained, they sent a "New" EVO the next day.
I have two refurb'd that are just fine though, we have 8 EVO's.

The term over the phone refers to the fact he can get a replacement by speaking to someone over the phone instead of having to deal with the situation he has at his local sprint store.

Yea they will. You should be honest about the problem because if you lie and sprint determines there is no issue with they phone they can charge you an additional amount.

Sprint has questionable refurbishment techniques. I've been told that the whole process is outsourced. I've read a lot about people getting refurbished phones that have known problems, like screen separation and bright spots on the screen. In many cases, it seems likely that those are the reasons why the phone was returned in the first place, and their refurbishing does not take care of the issue for which the phone was returned.
That said, I used to be on a Centro, and I went through three new ones before I ended up with a refurb. The refurb lasted a hell of a lot longer than the new ones. The only problem with it is that it was kind of gross when I got it. It had smudges and one of the buttons was a little cracked. But the phone itself worked great for the year and a half that I used it.
And yea, there's the gross factor too. Who knows who had their face pressed up against my refurb phone. Ick.
I don't like the idea that it could have been thumped around, and only the most obvious failing component was replaced, leaving you with a "ready to break" phone. That being said, I've never actually had a problem with a refurbished unit, (phone or other). All in the head I guess.

I've seen as many new Evo's that had the screen separation issues, charger issues etc etc. I can see there being a bit more of a chance that a refurbished device isn't going to be up to par. I like the idea of maybe a new device and every device following is a refurb. As for the dirty screens ... maybe that's how I caught that face tattoo known as cheek herpes.

Well... DUH, some people have no sense of humor, must be due to lack of root... I dunno.
So far only on my first refurb from August last year. So far so good (knocks wood). My launch day (002)Evo's 4G got up, and gone (radio was shot). The refurb is a launch day 003. As with anything you put in contact with your body for the first time you should wipe it down first even if new(some of the toxic chemicals used in production are rather nasty).

Phantoms headphones issue?

I have phantom headphones in CM7.
This just came out of nowhere. Everything worked fine an hour ago.
All of a sudden the headphones icon is blinking. The phone thinks it has headphones connected, so it's blocking sound to the phone speaker. But there are no actual headphones involved.
Restarting didn't stop it.
I didn't make any system changes today. There's nothing physically in the headphone plug.
But my phone is suddenly useless as a phone because it thinks headphones are being plugged in and out every second.
Anyone got any idea what the hell is going on?
I reflashed CM and the problem is still there.
I reflashed stock 2.2.1 and the problem is still there. So it's definitely an out of nowhere hardware issue.
And this phone is a warranty replacement that I just got 3 days ago. Awesome.
Does HTC have ANYONE actually doing quality control?
And now T Mobile is sending me yet another refurbished phone. So I get to spend another night reloading all my stuff and tweaking settings. [sarcasm] Awesome. [/sarcasm]

that happened to me too and i just cleaned out the jack and rebootet and bingo. dust and gunk get in there and give you hell. and ive heard bad things about refurbished phones but ive never been able to tell the difference between that and a new one with ones ive had. it probly depends on the place it was its refurbed at.

Can you give me more details on how you cleaned it out?
I've picked at it with a tiny screw driver, put a headphone plug in it and spun it around, and hit it with compressed air.
Nothing seems to make the problem go away. Did you have some kind of awesome technique?
And T-Mobile is losing major credibility with me over this issue. I just bought the phone at the end of August. This is already my 2nd bad one. The T-Mobile guy on the phone told me there would be processing charges for BOTH phones on my next bill after the guy in the store who processed the exchanges specifically told me there would be no cost. And now I'm apparently waiting until November 16th to get the 2nd replacement after the guy in the store told me I'd get it today (next business day) and that's after it took this broken one a week to get to me after the guy in the store told me I'd have it the next day the first time.
When I got to the supervisor at T-Mobile she made it 10 times worse by trying to up sell me the warranty and exchange program saying that's the only way she could have this fixed by tomorrow.
I'm like "It was supposed to get fixed by today for no fees or charges according to the guy who processed the exchange. Now you're telling me you've added fees after the point of sale? And now you want me to agree to another $15 a month so you can get this fixed tomorrow? It was supposed to get fixed TODAY for no fees! I just bought the phone 2 months ago and I'm already waiting on a 3rd model due to the extreme lack of quality control on these POS's. Now you want me to spend more money? Are you high?"
i know!! they tried that crap with me and i said im not waiting a week for your f*** up and walked out. then called htc and they took care of everything because im still under warranty. dont deal with money hungry salesman holding phones hostage for $15 a month.
but i used the same technique as you except i put rubbing alchohol on the swab to clean the contact better. *dont use a jack ass amount of alcohol though*

Well that didn't work. I'm sure there's a short in the electrical system. The battery drains like water through a colander ever since this problem showed up.
But I think the short is internal and not right at the plug. (Which is odd because if I plug in a headset it works fine. I just don't want to carry a headset with me wherever I go.)
The best solution I've found so far is just to turn off the "Display headset icon" in the cyanogen settings so I don't have to look at the damned think blinking, then just use my phone as a text only device until the new one comes on Thursday.
yeah but it sucks that your battery is draining still..but im sure you can tough it out till tomorow

It's torture!
Absolute torture! The CIA should realize they don't have to water board terrorists because of this. They can just take away half the functionality of their smart phones!
I mean it! I'll talk! I'll say whatever they want me to say! Just make my phone work!
Or...send me another borked one. I'm good with that too because I'll trade it as an even exchange for a 4G Slide, give it to my wife, and upgrade her account with a Sensation that I will take.
I think the thing that annoys me is that the one that just broke has the good emmc chip and the good screen. But this random stupid problem. Now I have to play the "Do you get what you paid for or do you get garbage parts" lottery again. And even if I get the good parts I can never rely on the device again because it's reputation is killed with me.
Update: And i came in 50/50 in the new phone lottery. Bad screen but good chip.
