Quite a good comparison here:
http://bluntmation.com/index.php/20...phone-4-snapshot-shootout-mobile-photography/
To summarize, they both have some +&- in video but in stills the Arc wins, especially low light where Arc destroys iphone4.
I tried both and I regretly said that iphone4 is superior
it has better details than arc
but yeah, under low light the situation is reversed
no bashing intended, just facts
as i have both

I decrypted the media profiles xml file from the Arc and it looks like I can already say we will have better photos once we get root on Arc.
Compression actually is 10 to 30% causing a little lack of details, that what explains that you get only 1mb for an 8mp photo!
On the N1 using the stock profiles, photos were about 650k per photo for 5mp,using my modified profiles people were getting 1.3mb to 1.6mb...and better details!
For the Arc I would say the photos will be around 2.2 to 3mb for 8mp and much more details
Just pray that SE keep their promises of unlocking bootloader

this is nice to hear it, i remember this when modding SE k750i i modded the camera driver to lower the jpg compression. I was also wondering why the images have low Mb anyways can't wait for root.
another picture compare site is http://www.gsmarena.com/piccmp.php3?idType=3&idPhone1=3619&idPhone2=3275&idPhone3=2964 you also can compare other phones
I've seen arguments that say arc its much better than ip4..so I guess it's all pretty subjective..
Plus if you want lower compression ratios try vignette.
Sent from The Arc!
The best part about this silly comparison is even Apple knows the Arc's camera is better than the iPhone 4's, since the rumor is Apple will switch to the same exact lens, made by Sony for the iPhone 5.

Why do you think the comparison is silly?
He seems to think that the Arc has the better camera over all, and he does proper side by side comparisons.
Did you watch the whole thing?
I tried Vignette as you suggested with Super Fine...I am getting...instead of 1mb...+5mb per photo
I will see if it's too exagerated or not (too much pixels kill the pixels)

Silly because even Apple seems to think the Arc is better...thus, comparisons are unneeded.

I think that, even with 5MB, vignette delivers worse quality than the default app.
Yeah I think because it's post-treated, like when you edit a 1mb you take with the Arc under Photoshop then save it with 0% jpeg compression, size will be 5mb but based on a 1mb so nothing change.
Editing the media_profiles.xml will still be needed to really improve photos, dunno why Android 2.2 and 2.3 are all compressing photos even on fast phones

I think vignette is the best camera app on the market...but one thing it doesnt have in which makes it useless to me is EV+/- control! That is an extremely important feature that instantly makes excellent photos when used properly.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Let me show you an example of my previous statement. I used stock Xperia X10 camera vs Vignette at its best setting.
On stock cam all I did was adjust the EV+/- balance. Tell me what picture is actually better.
I would assume, using the EV control on the Arc would produce better results with your pictures.
NOTE* I have uploaded this pics using XDA, so there both probably going to look like crap, but at least you will have an idea of what im talking about.
Both excellent cameras!

Hi
I got my s2 few days back and it's upgraded to 4.0.3.. I'm happy with the performance but very very sad bcz of camera.. My old nexus is taking back better pictures than this s2.. Here are two same pictures taken in same time and same place..

Please suggest me whether it's ICS problem or camera problem? Should I downgrade it to gb or go for camera replacement?
It's Indian version I9100
Thank you
Megapixels != camera quality.
If you want to take decent photos, buy a good camera.
P.S. Taking landscape photos at night without a tripod = blurry.
here is the photo taken with sgs2

So my camera doesn't have any problems right? Cause in nexus photo asyou can see texts look good and clear in those boards even after zooming but in s2 photo it doesn't and s2 photo is so dull compared to nexus.. And I took few photos in night party where we used to hangout.. Picture which was taken in nexus was better than s2.. Like faces were looking clear without so much noise and blurry.. So I thought there might be some problems and posted here
On both photos it looks like you're trying to take a landscape night photo with the flash on (lolwut?). I really think you need to learn how to use a camera, specifically the operating range and capability of a flash and what ISO and shutter speed are.
I love seeing people out at night getting out there pocket camera (or even worse, phone), pointing it at a scene 200 metres away and expecting their flash to automagically make an awesome photo.
Thank you.. I'll learn how to use camera.. I don't have enough experience dealing with cameras.. I just used to do as you said... I'll try my best to learn about it.. So there is no problem about camera right?
And it was took around 6...

the difference you see is purely settings-derived
Picture is due to posting I the wrong forum .How the f222 can you manage to use the phone .

If you look at the store under the "uninor" banner, SGS2 pic is clear while the nexus overexposes it. So it's the exposure setting that's different between the two photos that makes you think the SGS2 is taking darker photos.
Turn on night scene on the S2, problem solved.
I hate all this current selling lark that more == better. So many ppl simply look at a number and think "wow that's high it obviously better".
I've played with a 8mp camera phone and it got totally pissed on my a 3mp nikam proper slr. Always remember you are not going to take the best pictures on a cameras whoes Lens is smaller than a screw head.
As someone already said, megapixels are not a measure of the picture quality. Don't get confused with it. Pictures you have taken are generally bad because of the environment. If you want to take city pics at night then it is not a great idea to use phone for that purpose. Galaxy SII has wonderful camera that can beat almost every other phone's camera on the market. Here is the proof Best photo you've taken on the GS2

But in galaxy picture the motorcycles are much more in focus. You can't really compare them, it depends on what you wanted and how you set the camera. I am no photographer but I once had a camera where you could manually set aperture and shutter time (apart from the focus) and both shots could have come from the same camera with different aperture/shutter settings
You can try to use some camera hacks, some custom roms have it.
I think something's wrong with the sgs2 camera hardware... A long time ago, when I still had my sony ericsson k800, I remember it taking much better pics, even though it only had a 2mp cam...

id strongly suggest you have a faulty gs2 if thats the case.
darker photos means less noise , brighter photos means higher noise value thus this will result in lowering the quality of the picture. but i think i have to agree with you on this. GB camera setting is abit better then ics . well for me anyways because i tend to take pictures with my phone (before i got a DSLR that is). now when i try to take the same picture with ICS its doesn't looks as good as the GB camera days.
I think its maybe the camera firmware.

The rest all are Auto Enhanced, as you can see all washout is gone as the black / white levels are cropped by this built-in feature
HTC should be done with this and simply include a default auto "Auto Enhance" apply feature

Now Jonathan's Image are perfect example of why you need HDR which he did not use, the sky is over cast if you place the exposure in the sky the ground willl be dark and if you place it on the ground like he did the sky will washout
i have no doubt the results would have been much better with HDR or Backlight used

I think the problem that many of you did not try the amazing camera on the One X
auto focus, crazy fast shutter speed and perfected HDR were the highlights, amazing daylight ability
the only weakness was the piss poor low light image quality (not the light which was good but the quality of the low light image)
also macro focus distance was not so great

like i said HTC gives you tons of photographic control in the camera app, so really if you expect to pull the phone, take a shot with a shaky hand, not even try to improve it in the included gallery enhance features and expect to win a noble prize in photography, look elsewhere...
that being said if HTC did ruin their One X quality and color balance i would be pissed, so far i like what i am seeing, low light clean less noisy image was really the only thing missing
one more thing, i do worry about is the reported heavy using of JPEG compression being reported by testers

With a quick searched on the internet, I noticed that the Galaxy S4 has a sensor camera equivalent / equal Xperia Z, but your pictures are generated with 4Mb to 6.5MB, while the Xperia Z is 1Mb to 2.5Mb.
Follow the link to get an idea of the difference image!
We must inform Sony that we are completely unhappy with the image compression!

First off, replace "we" with "I". Second, SGS4 uses an unknown sensor with the same megapixel count as the Sony Exmor sensor, but then megapixels mean nothing anyway. Also, while there is a big discrepancy in file size, there is a not very big discrepancy in photo quality while zoomed in (compare photos at http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_vs_sony_xperia_z-review-915p8.php) if you look at image sharpness and ignore colour saturation and that sort of things. I don't see why the XZ photo file sizes should then be doubled just because the SGS4 has larger photo sizes.
compression isn't bad, in my opinion
its the same sensor.check anadtech s4 dissasmbly.by the way they are using same sensor with different module.i dont have a Z or S4 to talk about quality though
The images quality will much much more better if Sony reduce the compression, or at least let user decide jpeg quality.
I think the issue isn't about compression but denoise algorythms.

Its a combination of both compression (jpeg) and noise suppression (when using high ISO)
The amount of compression/suppression applied is ridiculous.
Does the "developers" of the cam part know anything about digital photography at all?
Paying premium for a low end camera....Sony think the customers are stupid?

With pleasure. (both are done on auto/superior auto respectively)
Xperia Arc: ~2.5MB, super long exposure times and thus overexposed images
Xperia V: ~2MB, slightly oversaturated blues
No XS though
But seriously, XZ is pretty darn good for the file size already.
Here they did a test with most new phones including the Z5! Shame i cant link the photo's directly so you have to go to the link it self http://www.phonearena.com/news/First-Xperia-Z5-vs-iPhone-6-Plus-vs-S6-vs-Z3-vs-G4-camera-samples-comparison_id73408

the red on the iphone looks washed out or better said, the amount of light on the car is captured more on it. the z5 captures the real color from my perspective
In my opinion Z5 is better than Iphone 6+ and GS6, colors of the 2 is slightly saturated.
Regardless of color accuracy, the resolution increase still does not helps getting sharper images. There is too much noise reduction applied, especially compared to iPhone 6. Apple here does a decent job although I'd rather have much more noise and no NR applied in camera. Worst offender is LG, which applies an insane post-NR sharpening.
I think we should wait for production samples and hopefully some 3rd party app that can leverage better on this new sensor. Otherwise there is no real advantage against Samsung or Apple.
As for color accuracy, it really comes down to the app and how much processing is done. On my screen (which is calibrated, but it's not best quality panel) and to my eye Z5 has decent overall color rendition, but I prefer the G4 in the first picture (less punch but the overall colors are more accurate) and the iPhone in the third.
In the end, we are not yet at compact camera level - maybe next iteration (z6 or z7 or whatever they will call it). I'd really love to have an RX100 performance squeezed into a phone
Found a site with more samples pics from the Z5 vs note 5. http://www.eprice.com.tw/mobile/talk/4523/4953454/1/rv/sony-xperia-z5-compact-review/ Its a close call but Z5 wins when its shoots a photo in the dark tho.
All photo's on the left side are made by Z5 and right side is the note 5

Am I the only one seeing that low light photos look good on Note 5. Specially the example you gave, Note 5 has more details compared to Z5. Yea we all know that Samsung dose produce more warmer pics which makes the photo looks yellowish, but if you take a closer look the noise reduction is so aggressive in Z5.

P.S: Ah no wonder you seem to mix up the two photos. Note 5 indeed do look better here.
Sony for some reason still cannot make a good camera. Note 5 does look much better in almost every situation.
Also look at the sky in that one pictre. Z5 completely burnt while Note 5 shows some nice detail

These pictures looks awesome. and yea it got lotta details too. We need further tests to see how it's done. Since they can always get it right with software.
New camera module absolutely promising. Specially colour accuracy.

Think its time you get some glasses bro. The first one and clearly the best low light photo is made with the Z5 not the note. Even if you zoom in on the billboard etc you see that the note blurs and has to much overexposed. But both are good camera's tho/.

WOW those pictures look indeed pretty awesome!!! But they are taken by a pro tho with a tripod.
I am a Sony Fan But i Must admit the samsung note 5 is killing sony camera what a poor detail in z5 i hope there is improvement in the last release
Yea Note 5 has a great camera indeed, but I am pretty sure this is related to Software, and eprice device doesn't have the latest camera UI that means it's not running on the latest build, so untill then we can't really say which is better.
But overall Sony has good colour accuracy when it's day-time, I hope it'll be fixed with updates. I really want is more control over the camera such as Manual shutter speed and raw. Hope to see more improvement before the phone's released.
Sony has never been good at software, just hardware. It's just a... Mystery

+1
Specially when it comes to Camera software they don't seem to be doing great.
I am always surprised that despite making good cameras and selling camera parts to other phone manufacturers, Sony phones have the worse cameras in the mobile phone industry. The Z3 camera is terrible relative to Apples and Samsungs and their previous phones were even worse. Hopefully they finally fix it with the Z5.
Wow....

Hi there,
So according to Sony the new camera is suppose to be something out of this world. but due to the horrible performance. I had my iphone 4's photos side by side with my z3c and I couldn't tell the difference for most. Therefore, I am very skeptical about what the new camera actually offers.
Another major issue for me was the flash on the phone. Since my first phone with a flash I found it very useful to have as a flash light. the Z3c however was a major disappointment in that area as my old iphone 4 outperforms it by far.
So what I'd like to see is a few photos from the z5c (night time aswell with flash).
Also, I'd like to hear your opinions regarding the new camera/flash and how well they performs

Dude, did you even search on google? Lots of samples pictures there. And yes its much better because the z3c camera is pretty ****.
But if you llke at them samsung note 5 pictures it will crap on the new Z5 phone.... just look at the samples http://www.eprice.com.tw/mobile/talk/4523/4953454/1/rv/sony-xperia-z5-compact-review/
Look at these camera samples:
http://www.xataka.com/analisis/sony-xperia-z5-compact-analisis
in my opinion it looks so good. I think eprice had a pre-production model or something like this.
The images are so noisy, I wish someone did a one inch sensor, my 808 still takes way better pictures than all of these.
Someone on reddit (hehihohu) posted this album and this video.
I think it's not better than the S6 but it's definetively a top 5 camera in my opinion.

Yeah not bad at all, I will wait a bit more though and see if they release it in my country, and if not then I'll import it
If I compare a zoomed photo between the Z5 and the LG G4 or Samsung S6, I can see a poor quality coming from the Z5.
For instance, I'm talking about the 2nd sample from this link. Go to the chart called "Xperia Z5 vs Z3 vs 6 Plus vs S6 vs G4 indoor camera samples", then find the 2nd group of pictures. Double click on the candle with the label that says "REWINED" (in order to zoom the photo) and compare the quality between the Z5 and the G4/S6.

However, what If we use another camera, like "Google Camera"? I would love to see how the Z5 family work with that camera and know if the quality improves or dimish.

It looks very good, but there is blurring on the top left of every photo (top right in portrait) probably because of misaligned lens. Sony needs to fix their QC problems.
Everything else looks fantastic.
Here are some pictures I just took using z5c stock camera app:

Thanks for that info!
The "Stock Camera" seems to be a bit better than the "Google camera".
However both cameras are nice for me.
There is one thing with the Google camera that i don't understand. The "Size".
If you compare the first sample, there is a big difference in the size (969KB vs 2,67MB).
P.S.: Did you try "HDR" (if available) in the Google Camera?

When looking at the settings in Google Camera, I can only use 8.3 MP for the back camera. Save location is off and there is no option for HDR.

Thanks, I just sent this information using the "Feedback" function within the app. I hope is just something that can be fixed with an app update (something like "add support for Z5 phones" ).
Are there manual camera settings available in the Sony camera app or via a 3rd party app? Especially manual shutter speed selection??

Yes, via 3rd party apps. All manual controls supported. No RAW support yet though.
so far I can't complain. definitely no artifitial noise reduction when zomming photos.

Excellent pics! Have you used Auto mode or some jedi tricks?
According to Xperia blog, the Z5 series was tested by DxOMark and found to be the best overall mobile camera they have tested to date (beating S6, Note series, iPhone 6 plus, etc):
