Quickest way to select a contact by name? - G2 and Desire Z General

What's the quickest way of selecting a contact from the contact list by name, if I don't want to scroll through all 600 of my contacts to find them? I could flip open the hardware keyboard, but is there a way of popping up the soft keyboard so that I can type the first couple of letters of their name?

There are dialer apps where you can search via t9. Dialer One is one of them, and so is GO Contacts.

I tried the others and TouchPal Dialer worked and looked best for me.

If I'm on any of the homescreens, I just tap the search button and enter the first few letters of the contact. It also works when in the contacts list.

do you have HTC Sense on your phone? if you do, you can use the numbers that have the letters of the contact you want to search. for example if you want to search for adam, you press 2326 and it pulls up adam

If you have the Google search widget on your desktop you can tap the "g" and tap contacts to search from there using the soft keyboard.

I'm just venting here, but I actually find it quite ridiculous that the vanilla dialer on android does not have smart dialing. The vanilla dialer is useless.

My bigest problem with TouchWiz

I'm surprised to say there is a lot to like about TouchWiz, but there is one area that I hate.
The separation of the dialer and contacts...
When you go into contacts there is no way to get to the dialer, or even see your favorites. They have done a pretty good job at separating the two, dialer and contact.
IMO in the dialer they need to dump the "voicemail" "groups" and "updates" tabs and just go back to plain android with tabs for "phone" "call log" "contacts" and "favorites" that displayed whether in contacts or dialer, essentially it was one app.
"groups" could be accessed with the menu button and "updates" could be a standalone app or widget.
/end rant
I do really like that with the dialer you can now search contact with the number pad. I also really like the addition of the alphabet on the side of contacts, much better then dragging the cursor.
Umm... There's a contacts button on the bottom right of the dialer...

lmao!
To [OP] just remove the contact icon from your home screen/dock.

And that would be great if I wanted to get from dialer to contacts... that was not what I asked, reading comprehension fail.
how do you get from contacts to dialer?

Put your finger on the contact you would like to call and swipe to the right.
Or enter the contacts from the dialer and click back if you need to go back to the dialer.

More like Android comprehension fail! To go from contacts to dialer, touch the icon of the person you want to call and then press the dialer icon...
I have never needed to go to the dialer from the contacts section unless I am calling a contact that I looked up (which has a couple of ways to accomplish). Out of curiosity... Under what circumstances would you need to go to the Contacts and then get to the dialer without calling one of the contacts you just looked up?

Yea, this is what I have been doing but to have uniformed tabs in both contacts and dialer could make it so much easier...

Sorry but that dials a contact. It does not take me back to the dialer.

I agree if you go to look someone up then you are going to call them, hence the need to access to the dialer is moot. Its just coming from plain android where both the contacts and dialer have the same tabs (dialer, contact, call log and favorites) it was easy to do any and all calling action from one app. This also meant that you only need to have one icon in your dock. I'm used to just having contacts in my dock with no dialer. Now I actually have to think about it, I often have issues when thinking
Oh another reason I don't like this setup... So you go into your contacts to dial a contact who is a favorite... Well for this contact you actually have to open the dialer to access that list, unless you want to spend the time scrolling through all contact to find this "favorite"... Yet again I have to apply brain...
It would be more complete and simpler to have dialer, contact, call log and favorites tabs for both contacts and dialer.

That makes sense. I am all for minimizing the number of icons but I have always had both so I didn't notice the difference.

I understand you want them to be the same, but is this not solved by not going into contacts in the first place? You want a favorite, open dialer. You want to dial, open dialer. You want to call someone so you open dialer, if you don't know their number and they aren't a favorite press the little icon for contacts in the dialer. Just don't click the contacts icon to begin with at all and I don't see the issue.

This is probably why the dialer is permanently in the dock and the others can be changed...

Help on searching contacts for locations,e tc.

I'm new to the android, mostly I like it, but there is one thing that is driving me nuts. I don't know if I'm missing something or stupid or what.
There are a number of times I have gotten to my list of contacts - i.e. from Google Maps defining a location to navigate to, or creating a shortcut to a contact- that I get presented with a list of all my contacts (1500+) and no apparent way to search the list.
If I press the search button it brings up the contact search, but then I seem to have lost the app that wanted the contact. Is there a way to do a search on the contacts and then have it get entered into the original app? I also tried google gesture search, which was great, but I can't figure out how to do anything with the contact other than call them.
I'm beginning to think I am dense or something, please help.
if i understand correctly, i think you want to navigate to a specific contact's address from google maps?
if so, all you need to do is, while in google maps, in the destination field just type the contacts name. and if you have their address saved in your contacts it should just pop up with their address.
For maps tha'ts great, I must remember not to rush things at traffic lights.
However, the thing I am still having trouble with is creating direct dial shortcuts. I go to create the shortcut, and get a long list of contacts and A-Z on the right. I can pick a letter, but there are still hundreds of phone numbers to go through. There is no search box available at that point - I tried pushing the search button and it searches the contact list, but then all I can do is call the contact, not create a shortcut. I tried BetterCut and it doesn't have the A-Z selector.
Am i missing something here too?
This is the problem of not having a physical keyboard. And not having gestures in all lists. What you are doing is exactly what I want to do many times and there is unfortunately no way around it except scrolling up and down a list. Very annoying idiom started by the iPhone and unfortunately copied by Android. There is simply no way to filter lists unless every list is accompanied by a filter text field.

[Q] Default Phone Number

I've searched the Fascinate forums for a question on this and came up with nothing, so sorry if this has already been asked earlier.
I just got my Fascinate a few days ago and I was wondering if there was a way you could set a default phone number for each contact? For example, when you click on a contact to call and you have their Home and Mobile phone numbers, it asks you which one you want to call. I think it's somewhat annoying to have to do this each time if you know the majority of the time you want to call their cell phone.
Thanks for any answers!
If you go into your contacts app, select the contact you want to set a default for. Then hit your menu key. At the bottom there will be an option that says "Mark as Default", click that option and then select the phone number/email address you want to use as the default. Now click save. That should do it.
Thank you! By the way, is there a way to call a contact directly from the list of contacts? I know you can swipe your finger to the right over the contact to show the two icons for "Call" and "Message", but is there a way to just directly call the contact with one touch/swipe?
I find the Samsung dialer to be rather lacking. I would highly recommend that you give Dialer One a try. Free app, no ads, and much more customizable.

Actually, after setting the default number, when I press "Call," it still asks me which number to call....

Contact search shortcut

I am looking for an application that allows me to quickly access the search of contacts.
Normally I use a sense rom which has the htc dialer. Great because I hit the dialer. Do a abbreviated search then phone, txt or email from there.
Problem with Cynogen rom which I am trying its a pain. Click contacts, Options, Search then I can search
Is there an market app that can shorten this?
Having the num keypad is also great
Have a play with this dialler and see if it helps...

Samsung stock dialer issue

Hi guys
Has anyone noticed that when searching for a contact (T9 search) in samsung stock dialer, the search function it only lists the first number for a contact if they have more than 1 applied to their card. Problem is you can't view other numbers, it just immediately starts dialing that one number instead if you try to select it ( there is no way to select and see the other numbers)
I have contact with 3-4 numbers so its annoying me. I know there is Dialer One, Go contacts etc but none of them have the clean interface the stock dialer has .
If you click the contact photo it shows all the numbers.
At least my one does....
I'd hate to bring up an old thread, but I used the magical search button and found this thread.
I have this problem, too, and it's really annoying.
Pressing the contact photo doesn't bring up the rest of the numbers for me.
If it helps, my contacts are synced via my google account, and I have a feeling this doesn't happen for contacts locally stored on the phone.
Does anybody have a solution for this?
I'm currently using a different dialer, but I'd prefer to stick to Samsung's dialer if possible.
