The US version of the HD2 is going to arrive in 1-2 months. It will definitely include improvements based on the lessons learned with the older european/asian version.
Are we likely to see improvements on the hardware side ?, like including a frontal camera, dedicated power button at the top of the device, capacitive buttons (like on the originial HD's), etc. ?
Any such improvements could seriously lower the value of the european version currently sold. Pretty bad for those who already own one.
Lol, I started this thread more than 2 months ago, it was so clear to me then... (so now we know it's RAM/ROM capacity... I didn't even wanted to mention such a horrible option back then)
May I be the first to congratulate myself on being the second person to contribute to this thread in 2 months!!!
So are you keeping or selling yours?
I bow to your wisdom Nostradamus...any chance of a hint at what I can expect to get next Christmas when I'm due for an upgrade?

I'm keeping mine. My first WM7 device is probably going to be HD3, which is going to arrive not long after the US HD2 release.
I think it's obvious why HTC release the US version of the HD2 with 1GB ROM: The HD2 arrives to the US market very late, only at ~May. This means that the US market will not get HD3 (WM7 device) at ~October 2010, like the rest of the world (since it's only 5 months after the HD2 is released in the US, no way HTC will release a newer generation to the US market so soon). Still, HTC wants the US market to enjoy WM7 together with the rest of the world, and for this reason they gave the US version of the HD2 the full capability of supporting WM7 (i.e 1GB ROM, which was the only absent requirment).
So, as I see it, in November 2010, all of the world (except the USA) will have the option to enjoy WM7 with the HD3, while the US will get a WM7 upgrade for their HD2.
The european version of the HD2 will probably not get an official WM7 upgrade, due to the smaller ROM size. This will increase HD3 sales in this market.
(I will bump this thread again at November 2010).

Hope you're right. I think if the US version has 1GB ROM, it will be better suited for WM7, and HTC know it.
Well if WM7 needs anything like 500 meg to 1 gig of rom to run they can keep that bloated pile of crap .. Ill stick with what i have already ..
Although it is still not the updating time, at least we will find out when we can get the officail hero 2.1 rom.

also some free widgets from HTC via Android Market like Parkingtimer, Translator and ringtone-widget.
Ran it through google translate and didn't get far, a lot of the page is in flash
What does it say exactly?
What does it say??????????
yeah sure.
Probably just old news anyway
The important part says:
Hero Upgrade Android 2.1 version of the schedule will be announced next week.

Interesting
I've got a feeling it will only be out in April. i think this because HTC are releasing new handsets at the end of march?.. so i think they will only release 2.1 for hero after they are out to stop people taking the cheap way out and just buying a hero with the new software rather than the new handsets maybe??
It is saying that HTC will most probably revealed when Hero can upgrade to And 2.1.
However, they are still unsure whether to let HTC Magic and Tattoo To get the same upgrade.
Rest are mostly users of the 2 not confirmed models users grumbling.

magic geted a new update last days.. 1.5 with sense ...
so if they update the old magic.. i think we will get an update for us hero to...
but.. hey..
they really want old phones with new software? 2.1 ?
i dont think so..
Probably going to be announced in MWC
Rogers Canada have already said that magic users will be getting a 2.1 upgrade. If they get it so will hero owners.
The old donkey and carrot analogy spring to mind as far as updates from HTC go.
I'll believe it when I'm installing it on my phone
2.1 comes in march HTC said in a press report with some new widgets like the Friendstream-widget.

New ROM Hero should be available
According to a Dutch site, Mobilyz.com, the new Hero ROM should be released. The only thing is that I cannot find the ROM.
The article can be found here:

Dear patient Hero users,
Finally HTC officially announced a release date, well not a date but a indication
On the renowned dutch website Tweakers.net an article is posted, which says HTC gives Hero an update in march!
Tweakers.net is a very up-to-date website with updates about elctronics, games and mobile phones every day.
So I can safely say this is legitimate information.

Do you have any link to an official press announcement by HTC? AFAIK this was again released by "some source" who claims they have information from HTC in Belgium (or Luxemburg... or another Benelux state ).
This is not more official than the previous one from HTC Poland, which said it's coming on Feb 15th. There probably is (in both cases) some guy in the support team who didn't want to tell people to wait, but made up some estimate. However those guys in support don't know much more than we do. Maybe one week before the release they get a heads up, but not now.
First announced for january.. Then poland htc site said "february", then dutch htc site said "march", then blablabl...
It will be out when it's done that's it. There is no serious announcement.
Well yeah that's true but both tweakers and engadget are pretty renowned websites, no?
Quote from engadget:
"PR released today indicates that we can expect the Hero to get an Android 2.1 update with Sense in "mid March" according to HTC's Benelux team"
Sounds to me like a pretty solid source

Official updates don't ever need root, they probably remove your root acces since the whole rom is changed from the old one.
The video is from a custom rom, at least that's how I see it, a guys hero with a different bootscreen from the hero.
I do believe it's comming in march.

yeah all leaks from new devices like HTC Bravo also show the classic sense UI. so it seems like the htc espresso UI was not meant for other devices. LUCKILY! The bubbles looked like a cheap china imitation of the iphone UI.

I dunno, I haven't seen a single rom which had handwriting recognition (especially made for sense ui) in the call app. Or the icons in the menu.
Granted, I don't really try all the roms here.
It might be a leak ot something, but it doesn't seem like a rom I have seen yet.
It's not official, until it's from HTC website don't beleive what you read. Your all gettin sucked into the online hype
All the rumours where just a marketing stunt to keep selling Hero's under fals promises.
Soon HTC will apologise for not bringing out any update at all.

hehe Nexus One is a HTC device so "never buying HTC devices again" but "Buying Nexus One" is kinda stupid
Although I must say, I would prefer Nexus One over the Desire just because I know Google will "always" make sure it'll get new software updates and the Desire updates will be postponed just like the Hero ones due to business agreements and SenseUI issues and more...
I have been using Legends n Eris's ROMS ported onto Hero, so far.. But all that I want is a stable 2.1 ROM from HTC.. Instead of releasing new phones like Legend (Which is just a metal upgrade for HTC Hero + 1GHz proc) they should have concentrated on releasing update for Hero which has a large customer base. And I even read somewhere that Both Sprint Hero n GSM Hero have won awards in their respective categories.. This aint happening..

This isn't a press release - it's rumour and supposition, the same as all the rumour threads on this site.
It may well be that the update doesn't come until April, but this poorly written article isn't an official HTC missive and therefore should be treated as hearsay at best and a fabrication at worst.

New Response From [ Anthony (UK - Ireland Support (Tech)) ]
Dear Customer,
We understand that now that a phone running Android OS 2.1 is available that you are excited to get an update for your Hero. We are still hard at work building Sense for this new version but we expect to have the upgrade finished and ready to go soon. Please understand that it takes time to customize any Android version to ensure you have the intuitive experience Sense provides, and we hope you can be patient for just a little while longer.

Inquiry Description Hi, I have been waiting for Android 2.1 Update for my HTC Hero from last 3 months. All that I have got is news of update being getting postponed. Recent one told me that the update is coming in "LATE APRIL". :-( Harsha S
Issue Date & Time
2010/03/17 10:05
I think that HTC should schedule two differents update for each android device, one with clean android OS and optimized drivers focused on specific hardware, and one with optimized senseUI and others HTC customizations... in that case, it could follow OS upgrade very fast and satisfy who want to be updated with OS, and then take all required time to optimize and develop custom UI...
anyway... it is exciting to test and try custom 2.1 roms and the developers here at xda are doing a great work!
but it is also frustrating to wait for HTC official update!
Yeah getting access to a new kernal would be nice
Is this update so important???
We can flash HERO with a good working port rom and we have 2.1
I do not see the problem haha

Sure we have some nice 2.1 roms at the moment but they are inherently buggy with things that will definitely be fixed when we can lay our hands on an official rom things like battery life and 3d graphics.

I've seen that too! I've seen all the threads, and not one of them has an "official" date in it.
The simple fact of the matter is that HTC customer care do not have a clue. Take anything you read as coming from them with a large pinch of salt.
Regardless, this doesn't change the fact that the "press release" you linked to is clearly not an official HTC statement.
Regards,
dave
What!?
Ok so this has pi**ed me off. I have been waiting for the 2.1 official update to be released now for a LONG time - the issue really is that it was "meant" to come around about now (mid March). It's the fact that it's seeming been pushed back and now artificially put on hold because they don't want to affect the freaking Leg-end. I'd much rather they just announced the update wil be available on a specific date - 23rd July for e.g. and then if it's early its a bonus. They must be aware/accept that Android users are going to be more tech-savvy than most and will therefore not appreciate being jerked around and left in the lurch while users of other Android handsets have 2.1 already and have for a while now = no real technical reason for the delay as far as I'm concerned.
Having said all the above - what do HTC care? If someone from HTC reads these forums then the above is my 2 cents and I think they would create a lot of GOODwill instead of resentment if they were more transparent with their customers. I'm seriously doubting whether to buy HTC or HTC made again because I *like* to be up-to-date with functionalities etc. A platform like Android was *made* to be upgradeable and improved upon and this is a clear case of HTC's beuracracy getting in the way of their customer service. They don't have to do jack sh*t for their customers though because of course once you've bought a phone you're usually locked in - but they sure as hell could learn a thing or two about engendering customer appreciation and loyalty.
So there will be people out there who think "What's the problem?! Your phone runs fine!" Well if you're asking that question then you're probably not reading this forum in the first place because then why would you have any interest in phone OS development and all the joys it brings.
I hope this report is wrong. I hope the ROM comes very soon because I guarantee HTC (not that they care) that delaying it much longer will do quite a lot to put people off their SenseUI phones and HTC in general. Apple is due to release 4.0 soon and Microsoft is about to unleash Winmo7 series so it's not like there's a lack of competition.
You all know what i MEAN - even if i didn't say it right!
I haven't yet found a single 2.1 rom that is stable enough to use daily and that includes my respect and reverence for the talent and hard work that goes into making these cooked roms.
Ola!

Unless they need to make some changes for the hero that we haven't considered?
Can't think what though
What's wrong with 1.5?
Why is everyone so desperate to get 2.1 on their Hero. The 1.5 ROM works very well for me anyway and I don't have any battery or any other problems.
I've tried all the various 2.1 ROMs on this board and while they are very well done I haven't found any to have the battery life of 1.5 so have always reverted back to the shipped ROM.
Now if 1.5 was full of bugs then I could understand all the fuss. As it's not - I can't.
Don't get me wrong I shall upgrade to 2.1 as soon as it's released I just can't understand the rush.
Is there some "must have" facility that I'm missing on the 2.1 ROM?
After much discussion with a contact at Orange (aka Everything Everywhere) I have managed to get confirmed that Gingerbread will be automatically be getting pushed across to all HTC Desire HD's only upon the release of the new HTC Range.
