Htc announced 2.1 update in march!!! - Hero, G2 Touch General

Dear patient Hero users,
Finally HTC officially announced a release date, well not a date but a indication
On the renowned dutch website Tweakers.net an article is posted, which says HTC gives Hero an update in march!
Tweakers.net is a very up-to-date website with updates about elctronics, games and mobile phones every day.
So I can safely say this is legitimate information.
Tweakers.net:

Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/09/htc-hero-update-to-android-2-1-pegged-for-mid-march/
Maybe some of you guys can use google translate.
If it's quiet in the bar I work this afternoon I'll try to translate some parts.
It's still waiting a while, but finally we have a indication of when we can expect the update!
Regards,
DaanJordaan
P.S. In addition to all of this, you can find a translation of the original press message in post #7

nothing new...

I don't no about that, both articles were posted yesterday I believe

Do you have any link to an official press announcement by HTC? AFAIK this was again released by "some source" who claims they have information from HTC in Belgium (or Luxemburg... or another Benelux state ).
This is not more official than the previous one from HTC Poland, which said it's coming on Feb 15th. There probably is (in both cases) some guy in the support team who didn't want to tell people to wait, but made up some estimate. However those guys in support don't know much more than we do. Maybe one week before the release they get a heads up, but not now.

First announced for january.. Then poland htc site said "february", then dutch htc site said "march", then blablabl...
It will be out when it's done that's it. There is no serious announcement.

Well yeah that's true but both tweakers and engadget are pretty renowned websites, no?
Quote from engadget:
"PR released today indicates that we can expect the Hero to get an Android 2.1 update with Sense in "mid March" according to HTC's Benelux team"
Sounds to me like a pretty solid source

Here's the link:
http://www.whizpr.nl/persberichten/6679
And here's the part that matters:
"Met deze Android 2.1-update voor onze Hero-toestellen bewijzen we opnieuw ons leiderschap en toewijding aan het Android-platform", zegt Mark Moons, Regional Director HTC Benelux. "De HTC Hero heeft zich de afgelopen periode bewezen als best verkochte Android-toestel. Door de Android 2.1-update als eerste voor dit toestel beschikbaar te stellen, belonen we gebruikers met innovatieve functionaliteit waarmee ze nog meer uit hun Android-device kunnen halen."
I'll translate it for you:
"With this Android 2.1-update for our Hero-handsets we again prove our leadership and devotion to the Android platform", says Mark Moons, Regional Director HTC Benelux. "The HTC Hero has proved itself as best selling Android-handset. By making this Android 2.1-update available, we award users with innovative functionality, with which they can get even more out of there Android-device."
Hope I gained some confidence But to be fair I'm still a bit sceptical too

So that means you can update without having to root it and all that?

interesting.

haha great... it looks like they kept the nice old sense ui and didn't go for the strange bubble stuff.

Official updates don't ever need root, they probably remove your root acces since the whole rom is changed from the old one.
The video is from a custom rom, at least that's how I see it, a guys hero with a different bootscreen from the hero.
I do believe it's comming in march.

yeah all leaks from new devices like HTC Bravo also show the classic sense UI. so it seems like the htc espresso UI was not meant for other devices. LUCKILY! The bubbles looked like a cheap china imitation of the iphone UI.

You don't know this for sure since the final htc sense version isn't released yet?
As said before it's a custom rom showed on that video, I found a reference to lox and belhaams (???) on another website.
Still i'd hate the bubble, so I would be pleased if they left it out after all

well we can only hope. i also don't believe that we will get the update mid-march. First rumours claimed that the update will arrive on christmas 2009...so...
And the video flying around is really not a good thing. i mean the video has like 8:42 minutes length. And like 7 minutes are boot time....i surely hope that this is some kind of cutom rom...

I do believe it's comming mid march, I read the article and it says that htc as a company released this news. Not some employee of htc poland who wanted some attention

I dunno, I haven't seen a single rom which had handwriting recognition (especially made for sense ui) in the call app. Or the icons in the menu.
Granted, I don't really try all the roms here.
It might be a leak ot something, but it doesn't seem like a rom I have seen yet.

It's not official, until it's from HTC website don't beleive what you read. Your all gettin sucked into the online hype

All the rumours where just a marketing stunt to keep selling Hero's under fals promises.
Soon HTC will apologise for not bringing out any update at all.

They have NEVER officially given a when.

In Italy we have had problems with vodafone (i purchased my nexus one in USA ).
First problem, inside the box they replaced the original headset wich has the music control, with a motorola one. Now after a lot of protests they agreed to sent to all who purchased the phone the HTC headset.
Second, they are blocking the vocal search. I don't know what's the problem, but looks like they are blocking the vocal search because is recognized as VOIP traffic.
Anyway in Italy is sold with eclair and not Froyo.
Hope to see news tomorrow.
Doubt it.
More Froyo release date info....
ben1010 said:
Hi everyone,
I feel your anxiety, and though I'd love to give you all a definitive date, that's not possible, because there is no date. What I mean is, it's not that there's a Froyo release ready to go, and we're holding it back, or waiting for the right time to release it. That's not how it works. Software development is an iterative process, and each release candidate goes through extensive testing. Sometimes, the testing exposes issues introduced in the new version, and the release gets delayed as a result. And so, although we know that we are pretty close to having a final build, we won't be sure of the release date until it arrives, and at that point the release goes out to the public without any further delay. It's a bit like a baby -- the delivery date is a best guess, but if the baby has other ideas, we all have to wait ...

Sucks to be right but if you didn't see this coming I don't know what to say.
Nothing to do now but sit back, relax and wait.
P.S. What we saw at the I/O wasn't really even that close to the final release candidate. They were just being overly optimistic and hurried to give Apple something to worry about. Can't blame them though.
They seriously got a date 6/23 for the desire to be upgraded. But not for the n1?
This is bull. The thread makes it sound like n1 will not be the first to get the official 2.2......
This is BS if this is true.

I hope that is the case..you may be mad, but some of use like Desire 10x better than any standard N1 Rom, cyogen Roms. In fact, 2.1 N1 standard Rom is unusable IMO. If you don't have full Exchange support built into your mobile device, you are not a serious consideration for being purchased with huge numbers of people, particularly in the enterprise.
The interface, options/features of the Desire Rom for these apps like calendar etc...is way ahead of the standard Google stuff for N1.
Also, I have yet to find a way to add a standard POP3 account in 2.1 or 2.2??? Just Exchange and Gmail are the options..that is sad. Desire has this built in standard as well as IMAP.
Plus the interface is just slicker and refined in Desire IMO.
I thought talk was later in the year for Desire though?? Not in a few weeks?

If there's no final Froyo build then I don't see how it could be passed to HTC to throw sense into the mix. I also don't see HTC releasing an RC as their final build. I'd say the 6/23 date is speculation assuming they get a final build by X date.

Google is having a hard time activating the hologram projector. Give them time.
Seriously though, I think MFG's are finally participating in the AOSP project, which is why the projected dates for other devices are so near and the nexus update isn't out yet. The AOSP code may not be out yet, but everybody in the OHA is privy to the code before anyone else. For example the Droid froyo builds that are out.
This is an awesome thing that all devices appear to be updated withing a similiar time frame. It pretty much means Android is being taken seriously.
Cyanogen needs to join the OHA. =D

Oh God! Not one month more. If we have to wait until the end of October, I'm gonna be really pissed. That wouldn't be so cool. Because SamFirmwares (I think that's their name on Twitter) made a tweet saying that it'll come out by the 23. September... But is the end of oct. really the asia date, too? Because if it'd be like that, we definitely have to wait 'till then. Samsung, after all, are located in south korea...

Well.. don't be mad for now
Maybe this date is only here in Spain (maybe they won't release here until there is a branded firmware for Movistar -has the exclusive, but it's also sold in free version...)
It's the HTC Hero story all over again.
@DomiKamp, on the JPH thread some asian user got a feedback from someone @SamsungHK saying Froyo will be released in october for this region. That said, maybe Samsung read feedbacks about last froyo leak, and decided to go for some debugging..
edit: this is what I hope...
Cannot agree more... I was hoping for the delay since JPH isn't as good as Froyo and GS should be.
From the 3 blog
Moderator on September 21, 2010 @Bob X – Sorry for the delay in coming back to you. I think it’s safe to say you should be getting the update at the end of October/ beginning of November. There’s always a period after general release for our testing and approval and various other delays but we hope there aren’t too many hitches. Yes a forum would be nice We’re looking into better ways of managing the comments
Better wait a bit more for a good firmware than get an update to froyo now with this iper bugged firmware. I hope they will make a realy good firmware with one month more otherwise never more samsung! it will be my first and last time!
IIRC, Samsung Singapore also said October for Froyo, but that some regions (Europe) would be getting it earlier in September. It could be that that is still the case, but only certain areas of Europe will be getting it in that timeframe.
Either way, another reason why Samsung need to be more vocal to their customers about future product support, least they can do is ensure we are all kept in the loop!

WTF? I want a proper fw too but that doesn't mean i'm happy for the delay.
Oct then Nov then Dec.....2011....2012...I thought they would have got their act together by now.......so I thought.
Samsung has too much hardware to focus on.. the just released Tab, and variety of Galaxy family members.. why can't they just release one phone and one tablet and focus on their software developments?

Gingerbread coming to Advent Vega

@AdventVega Re: Android 2.3, we're concentrating on getting Vega's into the hands of everyone who wants them, next step will be updates!
Seems like if we don't get Gingerbread from Viewsonic we should at least be able to get it via a VEGAn build
http://phandroid.com/2010/12/08/as-...lenished-manufacturer-commits-to-android-2-3/
good news for sure.
I am sure either the Vega or Zpad fokes will get this going before VS
I don't get why a company cannot focus on both things at same time? They seem like VERY different problems.
AWESOME. This makes the work on the alpha worth it even more. we might have issues porting it, but I'm sure we can flesh it out eventually.
I'm not betting on the TnT devs to roll this out anytime soon, but maybe they'll surprise us.
Good news, but I wish they would release the Kernel source asap.
And rather than Gingerbread, maybe they could work on releasing the Honeycomb as soon as it gets available....
The Point of View Mobii TEGRA Tablet 10 is the exact same device as the Advent Vega...
I Believe the Advent Vega is only sold in the UK, where the PoV Mobii 10 is sold on the main land...
I have A PoV Mobii 10 and am currently running the latest Vega ROM (1.06.5) with Paul's MCR Add-On r6, which I gladly paid for (Ad Free subscription)...
I noticed there's a substantial difference between the Dutch and English version of the FAQs on the Point of View - The Club website.
In English they say:
Can I update my tablet to android higher than 2.2 ?
No current version will only support 2.2 there will be a new model coming next year which will support 3.0
Click to collapse
(Posted late 2010, so 'next year' meaning 2011.)
However in Dutch, they say:
Kan de tablet worden geupdate naar een Android versie hoger dan 2.2 ?
Voorlopig niet. Wij zijn momenteel bezig met een update naar Android 2.3. Deze update staat gepland voor 2011.

which translates to:
Can the tablet be updated to a version higher than Android 2.2?
Not yet. We are currently working on an update to Android 2.3. This update is scheduled for 2011.

If we go by the Dutch FAQs we will have an official Gingerbread (2.3) release coming in 2011.
If we go by the English FAQs we will have an offical Honeycomb (3.0) release coming for a similar device in 2011.
(They already announced the PoV Mobii 10 with builtin 3G, so I strongly believe this is the 'new model' they are referring to!)
Either way: Good news!
I am sure we will have a CM7 or other Gingerbread based rom on the vega before an official one anyway.

Gingerbread Release Chain

Hi,
So I have a query regarding how the Gingerbread Release will be happening for branded DHD phones since there are a lot of middle men in the chain.
Here is what I think what will happen:
Google Releases Gingerbread -> HTC tweaks it for the DHD and adds their crapware -> Mobile Operators tweaks it further adding their crapware too -> Released to consumer (OTA)
So what does this statement mean: "Gingebread will be released for the DHD by end of April" ? Does it mean it will come to HTC at this time or does it mean it is when HTC will release it for DHD consumers ?
My question is that will the HTC tweak of Gingerbread included their improved 1.84 update ? When and if we will be seeing the new Sense 3D in this update ?
we wont see the new 3d sense
and if a PROVIDER says we will get it at end of april, means we get the finished gb at the end of april
No Provider...at least hier in DE has given a date for Gingerbread. The date comes from a French HTC retailer.
well then use custom roms... british provider said end of april also, so we will get the wwe rom and some nice customs

And the best thing is: Wilefox swift 2 range gonna have oreo update within the next 3 weeks!

Good news...
Still no news though.
This is what I got off the STK online support when I asked about help for a screen which keeps freezing. (It's fixed itself somehow )
"Wileyfox is now part of STK. Not all of our processes are up and running yet as we are still transitioning, but we are here to help as much as we can. We have been pushing for support on as many of the older devices as possible, however it is yet to be decided. We are working tirelessly to get everything going again as quickly as possible but, as I hope you understand, it takes a lot of time."
This was last week.

I'm having the screen problem too, will just stop responding, usually during gameplay. Generally OK otherwise. A solution would be nice.

It's always amazed me how poor these companies are with communication. All it takes is a quick tweet etc just to say that things are progressing or delayed etc. So far STK seem to be exactly the same as the others. Actually didnt sell my Swift 2x as wanted to see what would come about. So far, new website and zilch else. One piece of communication would sort all that.

No, unfortunately not.
Communication could be much better as @divvykev mentioned already

I don't believe!!!
Since the "takeover" I have been keeping an eye out on STK and their website. They have a 2x type model available for preorder. Am sure it had been to be sent out in May but now that has changed to June.
On top of this we had the messages that Oreo update would be mid April, then end of April and now mid May.
Phone works ok but was close to moving on. All STK have to do is communicate with the users. Feeling nothing changed really.
In fact I believe Wileyfox did better at communication early on. They had a team of people on several tech forums who were there simply to communicate with the user base. Too bad this isn't being reinstated.
Looks as if they were listening on twitter.
Problem is... releasing Oreo for Swift 2 range doesn't earn them any money, all it does is stop Swift 2 owners from buying a new phone (perhaps even a new Wileyfox) for a few months.
Only upside for them is gaining a fanbase built upon good updates to existing phones - but it kinda feels like the damage has been done on this front.
Swift 3 should be a 5.5 inch 18:9 with small bezels, based on Android One. Ideally something similar to the new BQ phones that I'm keeping my eye on.

Spot on. Came over to Wileyfox from Nexus. Google had a massive fanbase before they messed up with Pixel and went for the apple people.
Keeping people happy can be as cheap as a tweet every now and then.
Like Android One ideas
