Gingerbread coming to Advent Vega - Vega General

@AdventVega Re: Android 2.3, we're concentrating on getting Vega's into the hands of everyone who wants them, next step will be updates!
Seems like if we don't get Gingerbread from Viewsonic we should at least be able to get it via a VEGAn build
http://phandroid.com/2010/12/08/as-...lenished-manufacturer-commits-to-android-2-3/

good news for sure.
I am sure either the Vega or Zpad fokes will get this going before VS

I don't get why a company cannot focus on both things at same time? They seem like VERY different problems.

AWESOME. This makes the work on the alpha worth it even more. we might have issues porting it, but I'm sure we can flesh it out eventually.
I'm not betting on the TnT devs to roll this out anytime soon, but maybe they'll surprise us.

Good news, but I wish they would release the Kernel source asap.
And rather than Gingerbread, maybe they could work on releasing the Honeycomb as soon as it gets available....

The Point of View Mobii TEGRA Tablet 10 is the exact same device as the Advent Vega...
I Believe the Advent Vega is only sold in the UK, where the PoV Mobii 10 is sold on the main land...
I have A PoV Mobii 10 and am currently running the latest Vega ROM (1.06.5) with Paul's MCR Add-On r6, which I gladly paid for (Ad Free subscription)...
I noticed there's a substantial difference between the Dutch and English version of the FAQs on the Point of View - The Club website.
In English they say:
Can I update my tablet to android higher than 2.2 ?
No current version will only support 2.2 there will be a new model coming next year which will support 3.0
Click to collapse
(Posted late 2010, so 'next year' meaning 2011.)
However in Dutch, they say:
Kan de tablet worden geupdate naar een Android versie hoger dan 2.2 ?
Voorlopig niet. Wij zijn momenteel bezig met een update naar Android 2.3. Deze update staat gepland voor 2011.

which translates to:
Can the tablet be updated to a version higher than Android 2.2?
Not yet. We are currently working on an update to Android 2.3. This update is scheduled for 2011.

If we go by the Dutch FAQs we will have an official Gingerbread (2.3) release coming in 2011.
If we go by the English FAQs we will have an offical Honeycomb (3.0) release coming for a similar device in 2011.
(They already announced the PoV Mobii 10 with builtin 3G, so I strongly believe this is the 'new model' they are referring to!)
Either way: Good news!

I am sure we will have a CM7 or other Gingerbread based rom on the vega before an official one anyway.

@AdventVega tweeted: "we are targeting en of Jan for the kernel."
Once that's out, get ready for the ROMs!

So far is the only custom firmware from modaco?

Anybody know if Gingerbread supports both cores of the Tegra 2? Or is that kernel related?

Pretty good news, Gingerbread is only an incremental increase anyway and doesn't really bring any improvement for tablets. Honeycomb is looking gooood

Fair enough, but after playing around with Oxygen for bit, I went back to a Sense rom, not too much to get excited about in my eyes. I thought Froyo made a bigger improvement over all, though I do like the Gingerbread keyboard but that's available in the market anyway

I'm not saying Oxygen isn't speedy, cos it is. But I just felt Gingerbread was still a bit buggy so I'm now using AlexV's Froyo Sense v2.1. I like the overall Sense theme and with launcherpro everything runs nice and smooth Also found the Sense kernels to be a bit better on battery life for some reason.

End of Q1 is already FAR-FAR AWAY. I hope we will get some usable leak a lot earlier.
They should get a clue and skip over to 3.0.

Why would that help? You think things would go much faster if they are tracking pre-release builds which are constantly changing? Also, they will still need to update their apps anyway..

Having to rebase after 3.0 is cut next month is double the work for samsung, assuming they've already started rebasing for 2.3. Probably would go faster to drop the current iteration being worked on, instead of finishing that build, just to start again on the next one.
I mean they should hold of on whatever work they are doing for a 2.3 build and wait for the next line to be cut and then work on that. They don't HAVE to upgrade systematically between builds.
No rush, take time, do it right, put out a proper polished firmware. No interim release.

Most likely it will be like this. Anyway, 2.3 should be optimised for the CPU and GPU of Nexus S. Being the same as SGS, we might have a major boost in performance just with 2.3. Lets just hope that 2.4 will be build and developped on Nexus S as well.

Should be interesting. Also, I had not heard of a ViewSonic phone before this article, and I am not sure if I am liking its design.
Nonetheless, based on what you said, it's good to see others come along and hopefully compete with Samsung, especially since so many people do not like or want a Samsung phone - other than to have Samsung's beautiful phone screen.

we on SNS got 2.3 before any body else

unofficial ROM cooks of course released 2.3

Well, the way they're treating N1 owners right now is rubbing me the wrong way, but I'm willing to give them benefit of the doubt. In fact, they could be just waiting till 2.4 is ready to give it to both Nexus 1 and Nexus S. We buy the Nexus phones partly because we are supposed to be given updates on a first priority basis. If Google decides to hold back 2.4 from us for another phone, they will have lost an Android supporter in me.

I'd be shocked if we didn't get the 2.4 update, at the time of its launch. Especially since 2.4 doesn't seem to be Ice Cream, but rather a touch of Honey glazed over Gingerbread.
While I am kind of new to Android (and smart phones in general), I cannot see Google keeping this update from us NS users. Although, I am a little surprised that the N1 hasn't seen Gingerbread yet (OTA from Google that is).
Just curious, how many updates did the N1 get from the time of its launch, and what Android version did it start with (Eclair or Froyo?).

acer iconia and 3.2

Hi....so what is the stand of Acer related to us getting 3.2 ?
I hope the won't just update to 3.2 but also improve a lot a bugs related specifically to this tablet, for example rotation time....while using Virtuous Galaxy, one can tell this ain't hardware related but software related....
VG rom rotates sooooo much a faster than Acer roms that you can actually dare to rotate it..ans show friends how it handles it!
GPS also works poorly for me.
Well ....any comments or news?
Happy to know more of this 3.2 Honeycomb release!
Enviado desde mi A500 usando XDA Premium App
As it's coming for the Transformer soon, I expect iconia tab to follow shortly...
The core 3.2 drop from Google isn't exactly that feature rich (just a few font/sizing smoothing and SD card improvements) - Offical 3.2 release notes - so I'm with you in hoping for some general performance improvements from ACER directly.
Overall I'm not really waiting for 3.2 (at least not as much as I was for the 3.0 > 3.1 update) - that might change if Acer actually notified the community more about *what* they are doing in their releases - most of the time the only way to find what's changed is by poking around the update file after it's dropped.
I know it's for sure too early talk about (and a bit off topic too), but while I think that 3.2 will come for both A500 and A501, I'm quite worried about the timing. I'm new to Acer devices (only have HTC Desire as a cell phone). To the ones who has other Acer devices: what's their "support lifetime"?
And, another fear is (again, too early to say) about 4.0: I hope we will be covered but... again, who knows about their support duration?

I've already made up my mind not to upgrade to a quad when it comes out. Duo is enough for me for now. The acer and gtab should last me for a while.
3.2 is for 7" tablet.. so why look for it?
expand/minimise window is nice , but 3.2? i think 3.1.1 would have be ok.
acer will not deliver anything good with 3.2, just resized window, what a fracking breakthrough..
well there is one part of the update that looks helpful: and that is the extended micro SD support. Meaning my music apps might actually be able to properly utilize my card.

I wouldn't worry too much. 4.0 will apparently be open sourced, like with 2.x, so rom builders can put together proper roms for the device rather than just modified versions of existing roms. 4.0 will come the iconia one way or another.

Sent from my A501 using XDA App
I agree that 3.2 is a minor update. However, if Asus and Moto are pumping it out I doubt that Acer will not follow suit. They already dropped the price to match the Asus so I have to believe they are keeping a close eye on the competition.
4.0 IceCream Sandwich is obviously the big update for the end of the year and really I'm thinking the a500 would be getting it. Probably not right at launch but fairly soon after. I'm of the opinion that Android has done a pretty good job of pumping out updates frequently and that keeps the carriers/manufacturers pretty loose with the hardware upgrade cycles. Meaning, unless there is a hardware limitation, I would bet the a500 gets the update since it has not been out that long. In the long run, even if it doesn't officially come from Acer, I'm sure the devs cook up some 4.0 goodness for us.

This is my first Acer so I can't speak on lifetime, but the joy of Android, I'll guess long after Acer has moved on to the next tablet (A600 ?) - there will still be some resourceful people here releasing custom ROM updates including whatever neat updates including in the next tablet generation - but I'll put money down that their support model will be slightly longer than most carriers and their phones.
well I'm in no rush for it and wasn't in a rush for 3.1 only thing I would like is for better gps

It doesn't matter what processor ics is made for. I highly doubt the a500 will get ics. When it comes out acer will introduce a new tab to make more money. It doesn't matter if the a500 could run it or not. Now we may have custom roms but I'm 99.9% sure nothing official.
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
there is one reason why ACER might not port ICS to the A500, the A500 is not a phone, the A501 is possibly more into getting updated to ICS.
From what I understand (read somewhere), is that according to google policy, vendors are supposed to support their devices with new versions of Android for 18 months. Since the A500 was released in April, it should still be getting updates until Oct 2012 and ICS is supposed to be out by the end of this year.
If Acer doesn't provide ICS for the A500, they are going to have A LOT of unhappy customers which would hurt them for future products.
My bet is that we'll get it sometime early next year.

But you're just speculating.
Google has already stated that ICS will be AOSP'ed, so worst case scenario we'll at least be able to get native 3rd party ROMs for our A500's as long as the developer community remains strong.
Am I the only one smelling a troll around here?
However, the 18 months update policy is for the Android Alliance Partners only, which unfortunately doesn't include Acer AFAIK.

You had to be part of the Open Handset Alliance to get the source code for Honeycomb. Google wanted more control on this particular release to keep vendors from trying to use it on a regular phone.
From the "leaked" photos I'm not really impressed with the ice cream sandwich update. It might be nice on phones but I love honeycomb on tablets. Yes there could be some improvement but overall honeycomb is great.
ACER could get alot of good geek buzz, if they update to ICS and open the bootloader up.

However, the 18 months update policy is for the Android Alliance Partners only, which unfortunately doesn't include Acer AFAIK.

I think you will be disappointed. ICS is supposed to re-unite the phone and tabs os into one.

Open Handset Alliance == Android Alliance?
Not sure of that, but I may be well wrong...

according to google policy, vendors are supposed to support their devices with new versions of Android for 18 months. Since the A500 was released in April, it should still be getting updates until Oct 2012 and ICS is supposed to be out by the end of this year.

Ah, but an update to an OS and a NEW OS version are two entirely different things. Updates are point releases and bug fixes. You confuse the two, methinks. I deal with a lot of business contracts and I think I can speak with a bit of confidence that there's no way Google would force vendors to do major updates. Besides, if they did that you would now have Honeycomb on some phones... Obviously they can't because you can't even guarantee the same hardware will run the next major release.

If Acer doesn't provide ICS for the A500, they are going to have A LOT of unhappy customers which would hurt them for future products.

Again I disagree - sure there might be some irritated people on these forums, but the average consumer is now buying this tablet from Wal Mart of all places. That means they ain't all geeks anymore and probably won't even know when ICS is released.
The real trick is to buy like the manufacturers intended. Buy a tablet that does what you want RIGHT NOW. If you can't do that, don't buy because there's absolutely no guarantee that it will do what you want later.
It's like buying a Ford hoping for a free update to Jaguar before your warranty expires. Okay so it's nothing like that. But it is.

The "Ice Cream Sandwich Desire Z waiting" thread

Well, even though Samsung and Google have delayed their event, Ice Cream Sandwich is around the corner and the funny thing is that still nothing has been confirmed of its features.
Looking forward to it on your Desire Z?
It'll be nice, but I'm sure not much of a change for day to day use for me. I'm more excited about getting it on my Nook Color.
You should put desire z and g2. But I just want it to be released already. Have you seen the new ics video on the supposed nexus prime?

Definitely won't be released officially, but that's why we have CyanogenMod and other CM-derived ROMs
I still hope they think of us Desire owners.....

Isn't there an update supposed to be coming for the DZ? Maybe we'll get the ICS with Sense 3.5...
I think they will . But have you guys downloaded the new ics music app just search for it on the forums. Looks similar to the honeycomb one just a few tweeks here and there

I smell Darwin Award....
We all know it wont be released for our phones.
I bought a Viewsonic gTablet and this was the same talk going on - No Honeycomb. Mods started to ban people whining about when HC would be ported to the gTab. I gave up hope and literally a month later, there was an alpha ROM and now there are 3-4 good HC ROMs out there. And I think Google didn't release the source code for it. So, I am sure we will get IS on our Zs!

Well the issue there was no source code and probably a smaller community. It will be much easier when ICS source drops lol.
Im more excited about all the cool roms the devs are going to make based off ICS!
im sure cyanogenmod 8 will be he BOMB!
According to Koush on G+ it will be CM9. Makes sense because Honeycomb wasn't open source

Makes sense I guess, but I would think since CM8 never existed they'd just do CM8 for ICS.
Yea that would be awesome regardless of the naming scheme. I have yet to flash CM7 but for ICS I would do it in a heartbeat lol.

Actually doesnt make sense but let the CM team do what they want....
In related news to CM, CM 7.1 final was released today
I would like to point out that there is absolutely no evidence to suggest that there will not be a 4.0 upgrade available for HTC VISION. Need I remind you all that there was an official upgrade to Android 2.2 for HTC SAPPHIRE/MAGIC32B made almost exactly ONE YEAR AGO? Yes, approximately the exact same time that HTC VISION was initially made available.
Also remember that the 32B was a 192 MB RAM device where only 97 MB was actually available to Linux. This significant upgrade from Android 1.6 to 2.2 required some MEMORY REDISTRIBUTION via new SPL to increase the available RAM to 112 MB. HTC VISION is not starved for RAM as the 32B was. HTC VISION has plenty of space left within the system partition (in fact on mine, there are 262 MB of free space on /system of over 400 total -- clearly intended to leave space for upgrades). Unlike the 32B, the specifications of Vision are far more than adequate, and even with a device as limited as 32B, they made the upgrade.

CM "team", as well as all the other rom cookers out there (yes, they are cookers, Android is written by Google, CM just cooks it and adds in a few goodies.) do a TERRIBLE job of versioning.
I once suggested a much more sensible approach to versioning, which is used by many other downstream open source projects... but they threw a tantrum.
Versioning of Android ROMs should be as follows;
UPSTREAMNAME-UPSTREAMVERSION-DOWNSTREAMREVISION.DOWNSTREAMNAMEVERSION.ARCHITECTURE
Obviously ARCHITECTURE doesn't apply directly, but this could be replaced with DEVICE.
So.... CM7.1 for VISION should be versioned as
android-2.3.7-0.CM7.1.vision
With this, if they make a minor update (that they would normally call CM7.1.1), it would increment the DOWNSTREAMREVISION, so the new version would be android-2.3.7-1.CM7.1.vision.
I.e., the point here would be to keep the priority on the upstream version rather than downstream, because "android-2.3.7" is FAR more important than "CM7.1". Quite frankly, the "CM" version means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING.
Haven't heard anything amazing about ICS so far wish I had though. Any solid awesome rumors about improvements or features?

That was a long time ago. Now, forget it. They already gave up one update. They wont give us another.
Besides HTC is problably planning a new version of Sense for Ice Cream Sandwich.

Nothing. There is nothing confirmed for Ice Cream Sandwich at all. Google has had it tightly wrapped up.
The only thing we do know that it is Android 4.0
Besides that:
Facial recognition features, new APIs to reduce development fragmentation, a unification of phone and tablet UIs and its APIs.
Nothing else is confirmed with sources beside it.
