Asus Transformer Kernel Source - Xoom General

posted here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1026528

Should be posted in the Dev section. Think they could use this.

since I'm no dev I didn't want to violate any rules

reported and asked a mod to move to the appropriate section

Actually, this belongs here in general since no development stemming from this is underway and this doesn't directly relate to the xoom. Thanks for the reports, though!

The kernel source might help with the ability to get a working SD Driver. But I think we would be hard pressed to actually get the OS to make use of it with out OS Source. I am sure that Asus has had to tweak HC to work with it - that or Google has fixed it in a slightly later build of HC, that the transformer could be using.
Just my opinion.

[INFO] General Info and Questions :)

I have both input and questions.
First question, directed mostly to the devs who've started this and the average transformer owner's impression of what's going on:
What do you see the future of this tablet being? do you see it as very successful with a lot of roms, or do you see it as something that slides by with not much more dev than modified stock roms?
I will update this post with information for people interested in buying the Transformer and explicitly interested in development as soon as there is new information.
Another set of points:
I've seen people ask several questions in this forum, and i've congregated these ideas and some of my own.
CyanogenMod (with enhancements from the viewsonic Gslate)
Ubuntu
Multi-booting off SD or 16g main partition
Other roms from other tablets (as cool device-manufacturer software overlays come out)
AOSP for development (honeycomb of course, google has to release source )
KERNELS KERNELS KERNELS (i can see already that this is the strongpoint in XOOM development insofar)
I will update this list as necessary.
Thanks for reading. This thread will hopefully become a congregation of information for people who WANT TO BE DEVELOPERS and are considering BUYING THIS DEVICE. I want this Tablet to be as good as a platform as my G1 has been (it's still hoppin' in there ), and what i've seen spring up on devices like the Galaxy S line (2 of those devices here), and with the xoom already.
Thanks.
I will be responsible and be updating this thread. I may imitate RoyalKnight's Rom Bible in this thread (cf. G1 or MT3GS DEV)
I also have interest in becoming a Transformer Mod, let me know if that's available (of course i want to buy the thing first) lol.
Paul at MoDaCo has one. This is good. Also no offense to BadWolve1, I didn't know there was already a Mod for this section, i'll leave the above up for timesake.

I'll leave this in Dev, as it does contain Development info.

[ROM] ICS AOSP Acer a500

Hello everyone,
i want to open this thread because seems that the development in this forum for acer a500 ICS AOSP has been stopped.
I know that lots of people "hate" thor2002ro for not relasing source code in fact this thread is only informative for who, as me, doesn't care about having or not having source but they want to try ICS on tablet.I think that it is the right place because is a custom rom. Then, with the permissions of thor2002ro, i decide to mantain a thread on xda copying what they publish on tegraowners. I take no credit for the rom, im only a messenger for you (if you do not want it, simply dont reply) and i try to update the thread when a new alpha is done:

Im not responsible for damage to your device. Flash at your own risk. Don't ask for support to me because im not the developer
You're not allowed to post links to Thor's ROM's on here until he decides to comply with the GPL. Don't be surprised if your thread gets closed.
now is ok?

Why? now there are no direct link
I've already deleted the link and having a PM chat with OP explaining Thor's situation, i guess there is no need to start another useless flaming/trolling war.

I agree with you, but technically this should be in general since you did not create it yourself. Thank you for this though.
MOD-Please move to general

Might not have a link, but it still is 'condoning warez' in promoting Thor's code.

Welcome to the Internet I guess then? Larger forums will of course bring many more views and opinions, just have to go with the flow.
getting over this annoying spat that doesn't help the community one bit, i just installed the new ROM (v59) and played with it. aside from it being terribly buggy on the cyanogen/trebuchet side (it keeps freezing), it's pretty fast and a bit more intuitive than honeycomb. granted, alpha development is at a point where ICS's main eyecandy options (face detection via camera, integrated data counter and what not) don't work. that's why it's an alpha. the new gapps are nice.. but having a 501 with no data connectivity means i'll be rewiping and installing any other flavour of 3.2.1 tonight.
now, that's not the community's fault, but perhaps working together more instead of bickering at each other would fix me my ICS sooner, dammit. now go make me some ice cream sammiches ..

Ok, sorry but this thread is dangerous now.

[Q] So verry confused.

OK, So I know there are quite a few CM9 builds floating around in the Development section! Which I think is awesome. I'm actually using one right now but i'm not sure if they are different or what? So far i've come up with,
They are all based of Kang's who is a CM9 developer? (Tried searching to see if he had a thread he was supporting and posting on, nothing)
There's alphao18mega's thread which is related to jokersax's thread somehow?
but now alpha18omega states that he isn't supporting it anymore but people are still posting in it?
So should I not visit that thread anymore cause there are no further updates coming?
They are sharing the same Download link page.
So it seems to me that it's the same build just two different developers posting the same build under different threads...?
I'm confused which CM9 thread should i be using/watching it actually know me using this buggy awesomeness of a rom will hear my feedback?
Thanks.
I'm not on CM9 yet so I can't say which is best.. But I can tell you Kang is not a developer, wiki says "Kang - A term used for stealing others intellectual property and claiming it as your own. (ie. When a developer uses another developer's work, and then publishes the end product as their own.)" but stealing is not exactly the right term to use.
Joker is building from source, omega is porting from the photon. I think that jokers is the cleaner one, personally

but when i look at their download link it's the same link?!
so ones porting...ones building from source.. but they're the same download links? Which one is correct?

They (omega and joker) are working together now, so the links have probably been consolidated.
To make it more confusing the cm9 he was porting to the atrix was also mine.

Long story short about atrix cm9. The atrix dev team started working on it after ics dropped. However they didnt fix all the bugs and never released it. Along came someone who built what they had been working on just to show it is actually being worked on.
Now over at the photon forum cm9 was being worked on by cybik, the cm photon dev. However he never got it going. He moved devices and passed it to me near Christmas. On Dec 27 I posted the first cm9 for the photon. Ever since myself and several other have been fixing it up.
Now comes the atrix. You guys had one build from early December and that was it. A couple people started trying out my photon cm9 and really liked it. They pm'd me asking me to make one for the atrix. At this time alpha also made a port of my photon cm9. I made mine shortly after him. I then used the atrix dev teams vendor and device tree to start compiling cm9 for the photon. Because it is source build and not a copy paste rom, alpha decided to help me out. So now you have a partially ported source build. Once I get the atrix source in my buildbot I'll finish porting fixes from my photon build.
Hope that clears some things up.

Hey Joker
10x for all your hard work, you and alpha are doing a great job!!!!
Hoping that a bug-free (or should I say HW acc and cameras working) rom will be available soon.
keep up the good work
YUP, Thanks a ton mate.
I love the build so far so i will continue to support you and alpha and test as best as i can!
Thanks

Developers come here...

http://developer.nvidia.com/tegra-resources Nvidia just released images of Ics 4.0 for Tegra 2 based phones, do you think this can help our community?
Well this looks exciting - here's hoping it's of some use!
Wrong section folk. We already know of it, relax!

I am so excited!!
Yeah, good for "Nvidea"
now if only "someone" gets a .39 or 3.x kernel to work for the atrix!
I just want to point out how easy a simple search can return results. All I did was enter "developer.nvidia" (from the link you posted) and I got back a fair amount of results that include:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21723572&postcount=726

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21699953&postcount=1
All of which were posted before you started this thread. Which I feel happens to be in the wrong section but that's not my job to decide that, I really wanted to emphasize the redundancy of your thread.

[Q]ROM building etiquette?

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but here it goes anyway.
So I've built my first rom from source using JackpotClavin's tutorial. I just need to add my own personal touch. I still have a LOT of work left to do before posting it but in the meantime I need to know what's expected regarding using other people's work.
As far as I know, technically/(legally), I'm not required to get permission from anyone to copy/modify/redistribute someone else's work created under the Apache license. But considering it's OBVIOUSLY severely frowned upon (not to mention against forum rules), I thought it'd be wise to find out exactly what's expected before pissing someone off that could potentially help me in the future.
Forum rules clearly state that "If you are developing something that is based on the work of another Member, you MUST first seek their permission, and you must give credit to the member whose work you used.", although there's question to how much of that actually happens.
But where do I draw the line? What's considered "acceptable" and what isn't?
For example, according to Google, we aren't allowed to package roms with gapps included but, its generally accepted. The same could be said about packaging roms with apps downloaded from the Market.
But what if I wanted to use, say, IntersectRaven's kernel? One that was clearly made for the use of the whole Kindle Fire community. Am I expected to get his explicit permission first, or just just give credit to him in the thread?
That being said, what happens when the new Hashcode kernel is released? I think it'd be safe to say that EVERY rom created thereafter would be packaged with either that kernel or some derivative using his code. Would it then be expected for every rom developer from then till forever to either get his permission or give him credit? (I'm not saying that it wouldn't be warranted...It's just an example)
And what about the proprietary files provided by JackpotClavin and his work?
Maybe I'm over thinking this, but the last thing I want is to be ostracized no not following proper protocol.
Any thoughts?

Its just good form to ask before hand and cuts down on the drama. I contacted hashcode , jackpot and intersect raven and asked them all before I started using their stuff. It shows respect and acknowledgment for what the dev has done.
Just be courteous and polite and they will do the same.
Sent from my DROIDX using Tapatalk
I never thought it was neccessary to ask for someones permission to use their code, that's what the whole FOSS thing is about. But you should definitely give credit where credit is due and mention the names of people who contributed code to your build and thank them.

Thank you for your input. But, with all due respect, this question was intended specifically to see what was generally excepted within the Kindle Fire development community, not XDA as a whole.
On that note, I greatly appreciate the feedback and patience given to an aspiring dev. One thing I've learned in this process is how much goes into the development process and how difficult it can be, even for someone with several years of IT experience. (maybe that's two things--sue me)

What's been said so far is correct. However if you generally just credit the original author of the work, it's usually enough. Only the most anal devs require you to contact them to use their publically available work.
I would definitely think anyone who posts their work in source format is giving explicit permission for you to use it as a derivative work. Just give credit where it is due.
If it's in binary form, ask them and they'll probably give you the source. I haven't meet anyone on here who is less then awesome and wants the community to be as strong as possible.
