Hotspot is expensive but it blows away Wifi Tether in its current state. My ROM choices get limited because its disabled on most

I'd be more willing to pay for this if 4g was available in my area. I live 30 minutes outside NYC in long island and there's 0 4g coverage. Nothing and no ETA on a rollout from sprint. I happily use wifi tether for when I'm out and about and need it for my laptop, but I'm not going to pay the equivalent of my home internet connection so I can have my devices running on 3g

I think sprint should offer tethering for an addtional 10 bucks a month on top of our smartphone tax then i think more people would buy it, i would personally rather dealing with the adhoc one or the annoyingness of the wifi tether one.

Why do you say it is about greed? A company sets a price based upon what they think will bring in the best profit. Clearly the more they charge the fewer people will sign up. I don't see how deciding that $30/month is the right balance makes them any more greedy than any other amount they decide upon. If too few people sign up at $30, they might lower it to $20. Would lowering the price to increase profit be considered greedy?

I have no Faux G coverage in my area, and I don't use Wifi Tether more than once every other month, so I see zero reason why I should pay $30 extra for it. When I do use it, it's usually about 500k down and 150k up so it's definitely not worth paying for.

Think I'm going to have to agree, if I had 4g in my area, I really think I might fork up some money to actually let my home DSL go and just use my phone to tether what I need within the house. Otherwise, I'm not paying for crappy 3g tethering speeds on their hotspot app, when I can do it for free. I rarely use it anyway, just when I need the internet when working on a computer that doesn't have an ISP.

Yeah I got the spam text on stock unrooted ec05. I also got a spam text on "congrats on your new epic 4g phone!" Imo, stupid.
I normally overlook the trolls and snide remarks in forums, but I have to say something. The Epic 4g forum subsection has the most, of the subsections I frequent, amount of butt-heads, smart-asses, trolls, impatient, and just plain old people that lack manners in a public forum that I've ever seen. Sometimes people get quite vicious and spiteful with their comments. I am not a saint by any means. I've said things that I later thought that might not have been cool and said when I was in a bad mood. Forum moderators, man, the stuff you put up with.....

What's wrong with greed? Sprint is doing everything it can to stay in business, so every dime counts. They are in business to make money, just like pretty much every other company out there. Quite frankly, I don't know of any NFP mobile service providers, do you?

The OP maybe. There is an interesting discussion here about the validity of companies charging extra for this service. That is the real question here, especially in light of the industry seeming to want to crack down rooting - that whole effort seems to be largely based on stuff like this.

Please read up on it before you actually do it. Read the stickies at the top of each forum.
I did this literally 5 minutes ago. I have all the recent updates, and used unrevoked.
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
The whole process took less than 5 minutes.

Download that .apk, install and boom.
Thanks for the info fmedina2, im new to the evo and everything 2, but since the link is currently not working. If I root my phone is there a possibility my phone could break or not work properly?
Sprint really doesn't bust users for pulling down hotspot quantity data-activity without paying the $30/mo Mobile Hotspot fee ?
I put 2.1 back on my friend's phone. Now he gets to use the sprint hotspot for free. For some reason he doesn't like free tether, but I do.

If you root then apply Calkulin's usb tether fix, it will also make the native Hotspot app work. The fix disables authentification for both wired and wireless tethering.
Personally, I think that the way these phones hog data out of the box that it would be hard for sprint accuse you of unauthrized tethering unless you were doing something like using the phone as your primary internrt connection.

Hahaha you should pay for it? Why because they tell you too? Hey simple man root your phone thru unrevoked(easy as hell) then use pdanet or caulkins method or flash a rom that has it already integrated.
Hey your paying an extra $10 for extra bandwith so use it. Why pay $40 more now to stream on your phone..hey AT&T is 15 a month for dsl a year...so it may be right but it ain't smart..... Also I believe unlimited bandwith is for aircards and not for wireless. There is a thread discussing that. At the end of the day too each his own....

The reason I came to Sprint is because they allow it, and every rep I've talked to knows this. What good is the ability to push unlimited data (which, please, most people here can burn 11GB in a day, let alone a month) if you're morally restricted to limiting yourself to the competition's tiers anyways? Sprint's angle against the Big Two has been unlimited data for a long time now, and they're not going to switch it. If they do, I can promise you that the reason is NOT some guy using PDANet and watching a lot of streaming football while he's at work.
My 2 cents: our ten dollar a month 4g fee....covers truly unlimited data, at least that's how sprint justifies it. Even though I have used upwards of 9 gigs without ever touching tether. 10 or 15 is not that bad, imo.tiered plans are a scare tactic . Att feels the pain of that already. Hardcore users have started jumping ship now that they realize 2 gigs is nothing the more they use their phones.

You're right in that 2GB really is nothing nowadays. Sprint offers On Demand television, live sporting events, and devices with screens big enough to actually utilize these things; and when Netflix comes to Android, do they really think users will stay within 2-5GB?
Even without Netflix or tethering, Evo can burn through caps like noone's business on push alone. The phone was built and marketed as a multimedia powerhouse - stream HD, refresh your FriendStream every 15 minutes, push the news, get your email, upload huge photos from your 8MP cam, all within a few swipes.
It makes sense for Sprint to cap the non-premium data users, and just use that as an incentive to make $10/mo from that many more customers. But seriously, companies really should start focusing on making the network's capacities better - not limiting the consumer.

We aren't losing unlimited bandwidth. We pay extra for not having 4G in our areas aka a 'richer data experience'.

Why? You want your 3g to go back to a capped plan right as Sprint is the last to offer unlimited? Even at $10 more it's a cheaper unlimted uncapped 3g plan than any of the capped plans on other carriers. Paying more sucks but like taxes, it is necessary if you want infrastructure improvement. They can't keep charging less than all the rest, losing subs, and still expect to improve service. This way only us power users who need unlimited data and access to Wimax networks pay the $10 and not your mom who just wants to make calls and maybe a text or two.

So what's to say you travel to a city with 4G... you're not gonna use it? Be honest with youself.
I will pay the fee without hesitation. I live in an area with no 4g, but it's nearby and I travel to locations with it for short times randomly, but I justify the cost with the fact that I have the best phone available and that I have ever had or anybody else has and have the best service provider and also that everybody else its still more expensive and offers less.
yes its an added cost that others don't pay, but overall I wouldn't turn away a great thing because a small fee.

You chose to get the Evo knowing that is was $10 more. Sprint does not sell the Evo in non 4G markets so you had to go outside the market to get the phone or order it from somewhere. I don't know how many of you have been kicked off for this (doubt anybody has as not one of you that do use the hack have ever potsed about it finally working) but please stop doing it, all youre doing is upping the costs for everyone. To get kicked off the network we all know you have to constantly roam (excessive roaming) however Sprint will still check and require proof of address to have your ETF waived, once they see you're constantly roaming in a coverage area you will still get stuck with the ETF. Just a heads up, we all complain about prices going up but there's also tons of people that participate in making costs go up.

Sprint's data service is so bad that many find it as essential. If I pay $10 for a PREMIUM data add on, I expect premium data not 200-500 kbps. I've yet to do the PRL hack but everything is so damn slow. Downloading apps used to take a couple of seconds now it takes a couple of minutes.

I just hate to see good things come to an end because of a select few. Prices are going to go up, no doubt, but there's no sense in having them go up faster. It's a lose-lose situation. Customers get less for their money and employee's get less (benefits).
so, what you're bringing to my attention is that there is a way to get out of my contract without an etf?

Although I see where you're going with this, we are a very small percentage of the Evo owners. And a smaller amount of rooted Evo owners that actually user this hack. I know quite a few Evo owners that don't even want to root their phone, one of them being my wife. If Sprint set their plans up like TMO, where I could bring a paid off phone to their network and pay less monthly since I wasn't on a subsidized phone then it would different. Rates are determined partially about how providers will recover phone costs, and that is the ETF (obviously), but what about all the people that have paid there phone off by contract and continue to pay the same rates. This came to my attention, or rather opened my eyes when I wanted to add my daughter on our family plan with a blackberry that I had laying around. And even though it was paid off, it still required a 2 year activation..WTF...i didn't understand when I wasn't buying a subsidized phone, since I wanted the ability to shut the phone off for grades, behavior, etc. I mean why would I be responsible for etf for a phone that wasn't subsidized. I wish a plan similar to TMO would come to other providers.

You can start a line without a contract if you bring your own phone, don't let anyone tell you any different.
I encourage you to call Sprint yourself and clarify that. That is not the case when adding a new line. I can activate a phone under my line and not affect my contract, but adding a line is different.

I don't need to, I work there.
So, I was calling AT&T today because my phone all the sudden had data connection but would not make our receive calls/texts. I then told them I would like a two month credit on my primary line since HSUPA was locked on my 4G device. I told them I used my phone a lot for data purposes and was highly upset that my 4G phone wasn't even getting 3G speeds. I told them that I wanted a two month credit for my primary line wich is $69.99 a month and a two month credit for my unlimited data which is $30 a month. Long story short, my $270 cell phone bill this month is now $26.25! Just thought I would let everyone know so you can get your money back since you weren't receiving the service you were paying for.
Sent from my rooted, gingerblured badass atrix!
The reason I told them two months was because that was how long I had the phone before HSUPA was unlocked, just so everyone knows.

Wow... I agree that At&t could have marketed the whole 4g thing a little better, but that seems a little entitled. I don't think everyone that brings it up will get the same results either.
But WOW... Demanding $200 because it took a little longer to upload your photos to facebook for a couple months?
I'm sure everyone on your twitter or facebook really needs to know what you're doing right now, but does a few seconds really matter?
I can't help but think that if less people called in with unreasonable credit expectations, all our bills might be just a little lower.

I think you are missing the OP's point. AT&T lied to him/her about 4G availability on the Atrix because HSUPA was not enabled. Most of us can't be bothered to go through the bs it takes with AT&T to get phone bills reduced, so we just live with it. Kudos to the OP for getting a decent credit from them!

Agree. I'll demand a refund also.

I definitely see nothing wrong from the OP about what he did. Honestly I wish AT&T would have done this for us from the beginning automatically. I was still paying the same amount as my iPhone and not even getting the 3G speeds I had on that because they wouldn't give me what I was paying for.
I just wish that at&t would have been up front about the capped upload speeds. I do know for a fact that I used the crap out of my atrix and I don't think they owe me anything off my bill. Capped upload or not, I still hit 6GB on my unlimited plan.

Are you kidding? The phone is called the "Atrix 4G". The "4G" network was up before the release of the phone, but the atrix 4G was not allowed to access it (which was not advertised). Of course everyone who bought the phone before the latest update is entitled to a refund of there data charges prior to the 4g update! I just got $90 refunded because AT&T also agrees with us, $139 to $42. Stop being so brainwashed and realize that you are entitled to what was advertised, you just have to grow a pair and stand up for yourself

LOL the HSUPA is not 4G anyway its 3G or 3.5 G

Exactly! Anyone who didn't know they were not getting new tech or the fastest speeds around did absolutely NO research beyond the 4g marketing tagline. It just strikes me as insincere anger and a grab at a few bucks to say At&t owes us anything for it. They were right in saying that 99% of things done from the handset don't need HSUPA anyway. And they were pretty quick (by their usual glacial work speed anyway) to get the update out when they found out that doesn't wash with 99% of people (me included).
See here for a hilarious and much better stated explanation of my feelings on this.

I was using about 70-90 Gb data a month for the past few months, mostly because of tethering. I recieved the first warning, and then yesterday the final notice stating i WOULD be changed to 45$ 4Gb tethering plan next bill. Well i spent hours and hours calling back different times with different point. most being legality, and privacy issues. Nothing worked, UNTIL i got a very nice man who was describing tethering to me and how watching netflix on ur phone then attaching hdmi is still condisdered tethering. I told him i have CM7 and that it was a non-stock os, and that all i have been doing is watching netflix or hulu on my tv via the hdmi port and mirroring. he extended my cut off date to right after the conversation, so that as long as i did not tether after that (connect my phone to my tv, lamo!) i would no longer be switched. he gave me a third chance and i am very thankfull. if you do not get the response u want to hear, try, try again..generally with a different rep, but they HAVE HAVE HAVE to be in the tethering watch dept. i believe he said its called "EOS" dept. I also filled a complaint with the better business bureau, but im positive just a bluff would do the trick.
just remember, make sure you are speaking to the right department before you get all down and dirty into why you believe this is unjust, and use the TV excuse and dont ever tether again unless u wanna loose to AT&T
This ****s real, one you get your first notice, be smart, unlike me and stop effing tethering...unless u r on a tiered data plan....then tether away amigo
I have been using 40gb up to 70gb since i got my unlimited data back 2-3 months ago. Never gotten an notice. Been doing the same thing as you, plus using pdanet to use my computer and torrents.
Both of you abusing the system so to speak, and that's why the rest of us also have to pay the price. I can fully understand the OP getting notice, and for once actually agree with AT&T, except that I wouldn't have given you a third chance.
If you are using that much data tethering, I am more than happy to see them cut your data off completely!

Unlimited: Not limited or restricted in terms of number, quantity, or extent.
If i cant use it as much as i want, what is the point of having unlimited data than?

you're abusing it, though.
It's like when you go to events and there's free products and the booth is. unoccupied and there's a sign that says one per person, you're the person who opens up a bag and takes more than their fair share.
it's a lack of courtesy, is what it basically is.
pdanet and torrenting? you're doing completely unnecessary stuff that you could do on your home computer with your home Internet without data cap worries.

I am happy when I see threads like this. People complain about AT&T having ****ty service, but it is out of their control when people are hogging 50-100 GB over a wireless connection. Wireless is shared bandwidth, unlike a wired connection, so the network performs worse for other users when somebody it using massive bandwidth.
Unlimited doesn't give you the right to abuse the network and make it worse for others. P2P is abuse, per AT&T's terms of use.

People certainly have the right to complain about AT&Ts new practices but 40-90 gb is overkill. Its hard to sympathize with you guys. I got the notice and I've only used 5gb of data.

Ya well 4G isn't 4G with them either. The point is that everybody else has to suffer by paying more, AND dealing with a more congested network.
Tethering was really meant for emergency purposes, or when the local coffee shop is closed and you need to be online browsing/checking email for a "short period of time"...

Unfortunately... when he walked up to the booth, it was occupied, and that person behind the counter sold him the 'unlimited service(products)' plan, we all know ATT doesn't offer free services(products in your analogy).. he's not paying for a limited(tiered) plan... now, if he takes more than the ones who are paying for a 'tiered' plan, he's entitled to it, he's paying for that 'unlimited' plan, not a limited one.. ya know.. just saying...
Now, with that said.. going crazy with it like there is no tomorrow, that is another arguement/story.. ...
And yes.. I do have the unlimited data plan as well.. I just don't go nuts with it..

That's the point people are making. I have unlimited also, but I don't abuse it by using my cell phone data plan as I do my high speed internet at home. Tethering isn't the issue, ludicrously high data usage is because it affects every user.

ha. yeah you're right in that aspecto. i was just trying to point out the blatant lack of consumer responsibility.
i, too, have unlimited data. i stream music, netflix, google navigation.
and i don't hit 5gb a month. I don't even typically hit 2GB. it's the people who constantly abuse the unlimited data plan so that are causing AT&T to imposed stricter and stricter regulations on their customers. Granted, there's greed thrown in there as well. but until every single one of us customers isn't doing anything irresponsible, then collectively we look like ignorant customers. i'd understand if all customers used 5gb and AT&T was behaving as they are now, then I, too, would be pissed.
your car tops out at 140mph. you don't drive it that fast all the time out of courtesy to others on the road and you just knowing you shouldn't. you can. but you shouldn't.

Sorry to burst your bubble about no data cap on home internet. I was issued a Notice that I exceeded my data usage cap with Cox Communications last month in San Diego (premier 25mbs/sec plan). I have 3 TVs all hooked up to either pandora, Netflix, Hulu +, or Playstation Network. (Normal computer web surfing as well).
But back on topic. The unlimited label should be removed as it borders on false advertisement.

Well sir im sorry for having something called work if you haven't heard of it yet. I do not have time do nothing else than sleep at home while working 16h shifts. That's why I do everything at work and they don't have wifi. Also if you haven't heard there is actually caps on home internet. Compacts has a 100-150gb cap and AT&T 300gb I think and its easy to go over it also. Trust me I have went over 350gb.

I tottaly agree with you. Plus how would they prove what you do on your phone? If they can that's a privacy issue right there. Its called unlimited for a reason.

Trust me, if they did have wifi at your work, and you did that on a company network, you wouldn't be working there for long. Stop downloading illegal content. That's the only reason you are racking up that kind data usage.
If you meant Comcast when you said Compacts, they have a 250GB cap.

It's not a privacy issue when the data usage is provided by them. You expect them not to know how much data you use? Also, if you are referring to tethering, they don't have to do anything but look at the information you actually agree to providing them to determine packet usage. Without packet usage you can have no data, and TTL (Time To Live) is a timestamp embedded in all data. When you use their service you freely agree to them knowing this in order to provide said service, and thus give them the authority to see what you are doing regarding packet hops.
And I thought I was an ass just for using 6GB. OP, you're ruining it for all of us. But that's bull crap that AT&T considers mirroring and the like "tethering." Is it also considered tethering to use Google Music with your car?
