Verizon PRL Hack - Just Don't - EVO 4G General

I don't know how many of you have been kicked off for this (doubt anybody has as not one of you that do use the hack have ever potsed about it finally working) but please stop doing it, all youre doing is upping the costs for everyone. To get kicked off the network we all know you have to constantly roam (excessive roaming) however Sprint will still check and require proof of address to have your ETF waived, once they see you're constantly roaming in a coverage area you will still get stuck with the ETF. Just a heads up, we all complain about prices going up but there's also tons of people that participate in making costs go up.

I don't know about anyone else but I've been using this hack for months and don't have any roaming data. I know it's working or doing something because I notice a great deal of improvement in coverage.
Sent from my PC36100

Sprint's data service is so bad that many find it as essential. If I pay $10 for a PREMIUM data add on, I expect premium data not 200-500 kbps. I've yet to do the PRL hack but everything is so damn slow. Downloading apps used to take a couple of seconds now it takes a couple of minutes.

I'm not talking about the speed, I have horrible speeds too for the past 2 months, i'm talking about people using it to get kicked off.

What the hell are you talking about? Reading > You.

He's talking about people that use it to get out of paying the etf...for instance they download torrents 247 just to get excessive roam instead of just using it for Verizon coverage...I read it pretty clear, don't know what's wrong with everyone

i totally 100% agree with the op

i kinda agree but then again i understand why they are doing it been fighting with data speeds to the point i thought about doing the prl hack to get released from my 5 phone contract

I just hate to see good things come to an end because of a select few. Prices are going to go up, no doubt, but there's no sense in having them go up faster. It's a lose-lose situation. Customers get less for their money and employee's get less (benefits).

so, what you're bringing to my attention is that there is a way to get out of my contract without an etf?
this is news to me and probably several others. I had no idea there was a vzw prl hack. can you explain in great detail how this is done and what I should search Google for?
oh wait I guess you just did in the OP.
thanks.

Or you can educate them that by doing this hack you won't be let go ETF free as proof of address is still required to have ETF waived.

can anyone give me a link on how to do this? I would love to test out the speeds on it

Although I see where you're going with this, we are a very small percentage of the Evo owners. And a smaller amount of rooted Evo owners that actually user this hack. I know quite a few Evo owners that don't even want to root their phone, one of them being my wife. If Sprint set their plans up like TMO, where I could bring a paid off phone to their network and pay less monthly since I wasn't on a subsidized phone then it would different. Rates are determined partially about how providers will recover phone costs, and that is the ETF (obviously), but what about all the people that have paid there phone off by contract and continue to pay the same rates. This came to my attention, or rather opened my eyes when I wanted to add my daughter on our family plan with a blackberry that I had laying around. And even though it was paid off, it still required a 2 year activation..WTF...i didn't understand when I wasn't buying a subsidized phone, since I wanted the ability to shut the phone off for grades, behavior, etc. I mean why would I be responsible for etf for a phone that wasn't subsidized. I wish a plan similar to TMO would come to other providers.

You can start a line without a contract if you bring your own phone, don't let anyone tell you any different.

I encourage you to call Sprint yourself and clarify that. That is not the case when adding a new line. I can activate a phone under my line and not affect my contract, but adding a line is different.

Unlimited roaming :D

I just checked Sprint and checked my roaming data 1.3 gigs, but then it wasn't in red, and it said 1.3gigs/Unlimited
Yay unlimited roaming
It's been like this forever.
Sprint Data Used
459,509KB/ Unlimited
Sprint Data Roaming Used
4,384,848KB/ Unlimited
Be careful 50% or more of your usage/time on roaming and they kick you off the network.

Be aware that they won't charge you, but they do have the right to terminate your contract with an etf if your roaming data goes over 300MB/month. Whether or not they decide to crack down on you is up to them.

That is incorrect!
They have the right to terminate/regulate/throttle your contract/usage/data, but if they cancel you, there is no ETF. I have spoken at length with several Sprint reps about this, and it is fact.
I have been concerned that they would try to cancel my contract because I have the PRL hack and have been over 12gb of roaming data for several months in a row now, since way before the Evo came out. But, they keep telling me it's okay. They even give me free bonus minutes for my trouble every time I call. The secret is to call it in yourself, and act like a concerned customer that just wants to know what to do, but be persistent, they will be more than helpful if you take this approach.

Also, they will give you warning before they cancel you. Remember, they want you to keep sending them money, and you wont be doing that if they cancel you. They will send out a warning letter asking you to change your usage pattern. If you don't change in the next month, then ur gone without any further notice.

Sprint CAN cancel your contract for numerous things - including tethering without paying. I use ~ 20 gigs a month without paying for tethering. Never heard a complaint.

Here you go brother
Excessive Utilization of Network Resources: Wireless and Wireline networks have capacity limits and all customers can suffer from degraded or denied service when one or a small group of users consumes disproportionate amounts of network resources. Sprint Nextel, therefore, will monitor both overall network performance and individual resource consumption to determine if any user is consuming a disproportionate amount of available resources and creating the potential to disrupt or degrade the Sprint Nextel network or network usage by others. While the determination of what constitutes excessive use depends on the specific state of the network at any given time, excessive use is determined by resource consumption relative to that of a typical individual user of the Service and not by the use of any particular application.

Problem with that is, it takes 3+ months for it to actually get to you. If you're lucky you will get it within the 3 months but most people get cancelled at month 6 - but it will definitely work if you do, do that.

Yeah, that's actually what I was trying to get out of talking to them. I finally got one the managers to confirm in writing that I would be able to opt out all 5 lines for free if they decided to cancel/suspend me. I run Pandora all day and stream netflix/hulu while tethered to 4g, and of coarse lots of mp3 downloads.

Hm well what are my options:
Big Red: The iPhone (metaphor for popular, expensive and useless) of the mobile service provider industry is actually getting an iPhone (the popular, expensive and useless phone from wence the metaphor came). They're still big, popular, expensive and useless. Can't go there, next...
AT&T: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA, omg *wipes tears from eyes*, haha yea right...next.
T-Mobile: Is the down syndrome-stricken child of the service provider world. They have okay phones, okay service but I haven't talked to a customer service rep yet who wasn't on their 2nd day of English-As-A-Second-Language classes yet and they have no resiliancy. I told one of them that they aren't American so they have no soul. She broke down and cried on the phone. For real, I was just angry, angry at their terrible, scripted, idiot customer service.
If I had to go anywhere it'd be back to T-Mobile, at least they have an unlimited text AND unlimited data plan that doesn't throttle you after 1 or 2GB of usage. I just need to make sure that I NEVER need customer service again. Prepare for your call to be routed to India.
The only way we are going to bring the ball back into the consumers court is we all stop signing contracts.
AT&T is going to be changing their texting plans effective Jan. 23rd. They are getting rid of $5 200 txt plan and $15 1500 txt plan. The only plans they are going to have is $10 1000 txt and $20 unlimited. It seems like all carriers are making changes at the same time.
I got rid of AT&T and won't be going back. I'll stick with Sprint.

I really want to drop the carriers and ise VOIP or something else. I'm on wifi nearly everywhere I go. Do I really give a crap if I don't get a text while driving? Not really. We'll see, though. If I can make it work, I'm done letting these bastards rob me. I usually pay full price for my phones anyway.
Oo yeah I forgot to mention that AT&T is going to discontinue activation of customer owned equipment at no contract. You won't be able to activate a phone that you own with no contract. They are basically going to force people to be on contracts.

I'm probably jumping to Verizon so my wife can get an Iphone later in the year. We have three lines and one doesn't use data so that will make things actually cheaper for us because my wife has a discount through Verizon (I currently have one on SPrint)
The other thing that interests me is the Unlimited Data only plans through Tmobile. They are only 50 dollars a month and I'm wondering how good calls through Google Voice would be...if the quality isn't that bad I could just use that (since they now let you port your number to them)

Oh **** yeah very good idea.. using tmobiles VOIP... Interesting.
I luckily get a 25 or 27% discount thru sprint. I cannot remember which one it is. Gotta love job discounts.
I have been with Sprint for 10 years. I am ready to purchase a 4G device. It is between the Evo4g on Sprint & the myPhone 4G with T-Mobile. Based on the device, and reception/coverage area will dictate which carrier I go to. The price point is basically the same. About $10 per month more with Sprint.
T-Mobile is an unknown regarding coverage and Sprint is a known.
I had 2 lines on a Free & Clear, but to switch to a 4g, I would lose that plan, and I would have to drop the 2nd line as no plan available by Sprint for 2 lines is cost effective for me. Neither is one available from T-mobile.
After 10 years, I really have no allegiance to Sprint as Allegiance with any Company these days is non existent, for me anyway, and from them to me, and others for that fact.
BUT I have read that T-Mobile may be locking their devices regarding tethering, as they are charging $!4.99/mo as of now, and may lock the devices for free tethering. I don't tether often, but I would like the option to do so.
Sprint charges the $10 surcharge for the privilege.
Doesnt really matter to me, only thing im waiting to see is if Verizon is going to put a data cap on their LTE for their smartphones. If they dont im ghost.
Why brah? Sprint doesnt... Or are you chasing the new phones merely.
I'd assume this is because LTE is faster and from what I gather has a more promising future.. probably coverage expansion will be better, etc.
Wouldn't count on avoiding a cap though, and F if i'm going to pay what vzw wants for "unlimited" as compared to sprint.
Where I work and spend a huge chunk of my life these days, I get full 4G and use it to tether all my computers, more than fast enough for what I need, and I think staying with this contract will be smart over time. As long as all these companies continue their greedy practices, the value of the plan I'm on will continue to get better IMO.
When I'm month to month in a year and a half paying what I'm paying now for unlimited, I bet I won't want to switch. I'm not that concerned about getting a new phone.. I tend to hold onto my phones for a pretty long time anyway. With the dev support the EVO has (and considering it does everything I want & more anyway) I think I can get a lot of mileage out of my current situation. If I really decide I NEED a new phone somewhere down the line, I'll buy it outright and stick with what will be a cheap plan at that point

I honestly dont care. I moved to tmobile to get away from the lies, trickery, and robbery. Turns out they are a company just like att with worse service.
I was made many promises before my contract, not one of them were true. Now I'm locked in my contract and they won't even try to make anything right even though all the proof given. They just say, "sorry there is nothing we can do for you, and we are not obligated to fulfill the promises the representatives gave you. We are truly sorry you were lied to."
I've heard that line 8 times from managers! I've given up, I'm finishing up my contract or canceling when the money becomes available and moving to verizon. At least ill have the services I pay for.
So far I've noticed that most companies dont care about right or wrong, only who gets the benefits. Sooner this is learned, the less hard life will be.

I borrowed my friend's SIM a few weeks ago when I was going on a trip to Washington DC (from Dallas), and I wanted to have 3G where we went.
My mom's Vibrant, was constantly losing 3G signal.
My Vibrant, running on the 1900 band on AT&T, lost 3G signal ONCE for about 15 seconds, then came back.
Only thing with AT&T is, that their plans are expensive
(funny story, I went to a AT&T store to see how much a plan would be with them, and apparently, their texting plan offers unlimited Mobile to Mobile (who uses land lines except doctors, and offices?), and for 700 minutes, unlimited texting (with basically unlimited minutes), and 2GB data (never go over 1GB anyways, and I save $5!), I would pay $150 for 2 lines. That is $110 off what I pay now with T-Mo, and that's a DAMN good save)
and their customer service is bad.
They aren't that bad, and I am switching to AT&T because of that story.

got "the call" today

...informing me my account was being cancelled for excessive roaming data usage. I knew it was being throttled and it's why I'm switching providers and already have a phone with a different provider. I wasn't abusing it, but when sprint changed the terms of their service agreement when I got my evo it put me in a bad spot because I work in the mountains of CO 2 days a week and have a lot of down time to watch videos. Previously, my grandfathered SERO plan had no restrictions on data usage. 10 years with Sprint and this is the call. Awesome.
Some will tell you this is a blessing.

Out of curiosity, were you using the verizon prl? Or a regular sprint one.

Huh?
You knew you were being throttled?
You're right, you are now because you're with another provider (and they all do except att that just doesn't have unlimited)
Sprint doesn't throttle phones.
I sort of want to be canceled because I want to switch to Verizon or AT&T.
I know how to do the Verizon prl. My question is, are they making you pay an ETF? And, if they cancel you, do the do anything with your ESN? Will I be able to sell my phone to cover the cost of a new phone on another provider?

Just a regular sprint one, I think I was on the 190.001 or whatever the number was. If that's not the one you were talking about either way I didnt do any of the semi-shady flashing anything to Verizon.

Unfortunately they dont make you pay an etf although they should make you pay extra for every KB of abuse.
Hopefully they lock down your esn so it can never be used again.
You want out of contract? Be a man and pay the etf.
No one made you sign the contract but you.

Maybe I wasn't being throttled. Up until 2 months ago when I was out of normal coverage I could still watch things on megavideo. Within the last 2 months all of the sudden I cant even get data coverage that is fast enough to sync my email without timing out. This area is covered with a Verizon 3G signal. This has happened with 2 different EVOs on stock ROMs and steel H rooted rom as well as myn's 2.2 RLS5 ROM

I think this isn't even remotely directed at me (I see who you quoted) but on the chance that it is... I wasn't doing any of that and am not under contract with Sprint and haven't been since December. Before I got my EVO and had a winmo phone my grandfathered SERO plan had a $5 option for data roaming while off the sprint network as long as it didn't go above a certain percentage of your usage, which it shouldnt have ever anyways because unless I'm snowboarding or exploring CO I'm not off Sprint coverage more than 2x a week

I'm going to bold what I'm about to say because you need to understand it.
This behavior right here, your behavior, is the PROBLEM.
It is EXACTLY WHY carriers get away with throttling and limiting and ****ing the customer.
It is EXACTLY WHY there is always a new law to bend people over even more.
You're not just ruining it for Sprint customers, you're ruining it for everyone in society and the day this is understood is the day we might actually be able to mature as a people.
Hey, I think you guys should lay off the guy. It wasn't his daily there was no Sprint coverage. And this is America, he has every right not having to pay an etf because Spring decides they've had enough. So bottom line, go troll somewhere else, this guy doesn't deserve it.
I feel bad for you man, hang in there!

If Sprint stops providing coverage in your area then they have to waive your ETF and that is a separate issue.
However, if you sign up for Sprint and you use the coverage and then just decide you don't want it anymore and therefore are going to abuse your way out then you can honestly go jump off a bridge.

Now you're learning man good for you! Living is all about bending life over and taking what you want. In order for this to work you will have to break rules and abuse the system sometimes. Nice guys will always finish last Matty.....
That's exactly what I'm going to do.
I'm going to abuse Sprint's roaming policy to get out of my contract.
If you don't like it, you're the one who can jump off a bridge.

Hotspot data limited

I see the news that Sprint is doing away with unlimited hotspot. I use the wifi tether app to provide a hotspot for my laptop in the field.
How can i see how much data I'm using while tethering?
I`m getting the itch more and more to go to Verizon. Sprint cell service is very spotty, there becoming more like the rest, and their 4G sucks and it will be another year and a half before we can see any change from them with LTE.
Would this change in the data be grounds for me to cancel due to change in the contract?
if you really wanna get out your contract without having to pay the etf go here> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696073 from what i read if you use up enough data sprint will give you the boot.

If you are rooted and using wifi tether, this "shouldn't" affect that, as that app makes it seems like its the phone using the data. What sprint is after is the people using the Sprint Hotspot app.

No, this does not change your contract. If you are already in contract, this doesn't affect you until you re-sign the contract.

No, do NOT do that. There are MANY LEGAL ways to get out of your contract. Screwing sprint over by making them pay verizon for your stupidity is not the way to do it.

You sound like a sprint employee. Sprint is a multi million dollar company they can afford it, also alot of us on sprint are getting screwed for having to pay for 4g when we can barely even get a 4g connection. Not to mention the crappy reception.

Oh bull****. Sprint tacks on an extra 10 (I think it's 20 now $) to own a 4g phone. Despite the vast majority paying have no access to 4g. Your comment is purely ignorant. How do you not recall this argument from 18mo ago? Are you new?
I have 4g. But I know most don't. Stupid comment of the year award, over, done, awarded. You win.
Edit: and thanks agent Droid for giving me a place to post the link I had just copied to share

While capping data use on its 3G network to 3GB, 5GB, or 10GB per month, Sprint has continued to offer unlimited 4G service. Now, the cap for each of these plans will cover the subscriber's combined monthly data use on both 3G and 4G. All data use above the cap will cost 5 cents per megabyte.
The monthly allowance for data use while roaming on non-Sprint networks will be 100MB for the 3GB plan and 300MB for the other two plans, with each megabyte over those caps charged at 25 cents.
For Mobile Hotspot plans on phones, data usage will be capped at 5GB per month of either 3G or combined 3G/4G service, depending on whether the phone can use 4G. Use above that cap will be charged at 5 cents per megabyte. Those plans will have a 300MB monthly cap for data roaming.

This is absurd.
People like you are what cause cut backs, increased rates and relinquishment of benefits.
You people sit here and try to justify all the bull**** you want, Sprint isn't doing this to be jerks.
They simply cannot afford it.
They want to continue to offer unlimited data on phones

And?
I'm not going to search your previous posts.
All I know is you tried to peddle this bull**** idea that these companies are just swimming in cash.
Its so stupid.
People make comments like "these CEOs make millions a year, they can afford xy abuse/exploit"
Okay...and do you think that CEO is going to lose out on his pay because of that abuse?
NOPE.
Guess who does? The customer and low level employees.
Always always always.
Everything is interconnected.
For all the fools that force a carrier to give em a different model because their OEM phone can't be rooted after an update, or those that abuse prls, or those that demand credits because a device that is known to have an issue and you didn't return it within the 14 days, or people downloading 50GB of month in torrents on their wireless connection...the only one you're hurting is the customer. (Yourself)
Everyone wants to ***** and whine about loss of benefits, limiting of data, the loss of the ability to get a different model when its necessary for valid reasons ....WELL THEN STOP ABUSING the system.
Because abuse is truly what is causing a loss of those benefits.
You can "screw" whatever corporation you want...problem is...the CEOs, the board, the higher ups...they won't even notice the difference.
People gotta start focusing on the bigger picture.
This isn't about being on some "high horse" or being "self righteous" or whatever negative connotation that you can attach to it.
It's about the realization that everything is truly interconnected and that we customers are the ones screwing ourselves.
