HSDPA 3G or 4G? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Just checking but when your network status says HSDPA that is not considered "4G" right? More like enhanced 3G correct?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App

you're right ! but if u have a 4g phone like the mt4g, g2, samsung vibrant4g, etc.
you will get the full hsdpa+ 4g network. so u don't have to worry if it says 4g or just H, or hsdpa in settingsettings info. I can tell the difference with my mt4g compared to mytouch3g. both says H on the notification bar & HSDPA but the speeds for the mt4g is way faster!

The terminology is branding more than anything else. hsdpa is t-mobile's high speed protocol for 3g, but they call it 4g because, well, pretty much everyone has jumped the gun on calling their networks 4g.

Someone chime in and correct me if i'm wrong
By definition 4G has to meet 100Mbps on download during peak times. HSPA+, LTE, Wi-Max do not meet these requirements as of currently. And every thing is enhanced 3G.
If you look at it from a "G" = Generation Standpoint we are in the 4th Generation of Mobile Broadband technology. 1: GRPS 2:EDGE 3:HSPA 4:HSPA+. So it really depends on which side of the coin you look. and to really get the idea of it
HSPA = High Speed Packet Access
HSDPA = High Speed Download Packet Access
HSUPA = High Speed Upload Packet Access
If i'm correct typically your phone is considered HSPA if you have HSDPA and HSUPA activated. But if you are on lets say AT&T with the Atrix, they consider that a HSDPA+ phone, because the upload end of things are still as slow as 3G or below.

Well hsdpa will have about 8-10 mbps theoretical download speed. Where later this year T-Mobile is releasing hspa + to have up to 42 mbps download and technically it can be upgraded in to the 100's of mbps.
So personally I would call it 3g

I was checking because I was wondering if I was getting what I paid for or not.
I put quotes around the 4G because there is some debate about whether it is or not. I really believe its not. Whether it meets standards or not it doesn't bother me because I reallyyyy don't need 100mbps on a phone. Tethering on the other hand....

TMobiles HSPA+ network is considered 4G by the ITU, which says what should be called 4G. It wasn't originally fast enought, but they changed their mind and said that WiMax, LTE, AND HSPA+ are technically 4G. http://www.intomobile.com/2010/12/18/itu-reverses-its-decision-lte-wimax-and-hspa-are-now-4g/

is it true...

thats t-mobiles 4g is more widespread than sprints atm? i was told last night that it was.
All they did was beef up their 3G network and not use a "new technology", so yes, it is.
yeah they about the same, but some 4g speeds (even tho is not really 4g) from tmobile re faster then sprint wimax
I have a Dell Streak 7 with tmobile and yes its true...and its fast! I don't have Wimax in my area though for my EVO
I don't have 4G from Sprint, but I do get 3G.
I can't sign up for T-Mobile (or Verizon) where I am even if I wanted to.
sprints 4g is hardly no where, just in SOME major cities

They advertise as the nations largest "4G" network so probably. The confusing thing to me is that AT&T announced that their entire 3G network is now HSPA+, and they have a significantly larger 3G network than T-Mo so shouldn't they have the largest HSPA+/"4G" network? Of course with AT&T comes more users so speeds will be slower anyway (I get 3-5 Mb/s on a iPhone 4 in Brooklyn so you'd get that even with a HSPA+/"4G" phone like the Inspire).

Truth but now att and T-Mobile are hspa + and all devices are going to come like that, btw I just saw the latest report of the networks reliability (call , sms and data )and Verizon came up on top again, while T-Mobile is the worst ( I got a tmobile phone from my company) and att and sprint almost the same

Detroit area wireless speeds

Tonight I did some speed tests and I am getting 6.7mbps downloads and 1.7 mbps uploads. I repeated the test a few times and download speeds are consistently over 6 mbps. Uploads will go up to 1.8 mbps and than drop to .28 or so. Wierd as I don't think these are 4g speds I am getting. At list in the menu it said I was on hsps.

Can anyone tell me if hspa is att 4g? How do I know if I am on 3g+ or not?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
HSPA is 3G (up to 7.2 Mbit/s)
HSPA+ is what AT&T called "4G" (actually, it is 3.75g, up to 42 Mbit/s)
Thanks for clarifying that. Now, is 4g working anywhere yet, or it hasn't been turned on?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Anyone know why the speeds differ so much when connected to HSDPA and HSPA?
When my phone says connected to HSDPA, my downloads go from 1-3 and uploads are 0.20. But when connected to HSPA I get 3.1-7.2 down and 1.2-1.6 up. Pings are also lower with HSPA (130ms vs 250ms). And why do they switch so much? I could be in the same place with my phone getting good signal (-58db) and it would constantly switch connecting between HSDPA and HSPA.

Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
It will be done region by region, there may be a couple of areas that have backhaul in place...the at&t shows my whole tri-state region is 4G* and I have yet to get above 3.5 MB/s down in any speed test I've done.
The 6-7mb/s range is right for 4g. The theoretical cap for our phone is 14.4, but you will never see those speeds (same as someone with verizon lte will never see 48mb/s). The most you will see with the atrix is probably going to be about 9mb/s if no one else is using the network. That's a huge improvement from 3-4mb/s though, and should be plenty fast for anything you can do on a wireless phone at this point.
But isn't there any way for me to check and see if I am actually on 4g or not.

Improved 3G speeds in Florida!!

Recently i have noticed that sprints 3G speeds have dramatically improved.back then i would get 700-800kbps speeds now I'm getting 1-2MBps sppeds here in Miami. Also my 4G speeds have also improved and signal too.
UPDATE:I have NOT edited the 3G proxy everything is default

Lucky you. My 3G is still as fast as a frozen glacier.
Edit: Even you previous 700-800 kb speeds are 3 times faster than what I get.

I have the latest PRL, but the "amazing roaming speeds" are because you are running off of Verizon towers when you're roaming.......it has nothing to do with Sprint.
Edit: Also, I don't want to force the phone to roam on Verizon in any way. Hopefully some of whatever you're getting comes my way sooner than later.

My 3G speeds in Orlando are kinda slow. Roaming or not, they are actually a little slower when roaming. So I just use 4G as often as I possibly can.

MY speeds in Jacksonville (Right along the line of ST Augustine) has increased GREATLY! My speeds went from 50-80 kpbs to 1800-220 kbps DL. And about 10 kbps upload, now 550 (on average). It's great! Beats Verizon's speed @ my house (tested w/ a friend's HTC Eris).

Oh, ok.....I must have misunderstood what you typed earlier.
My max speeds when roaming hit 250 kbps, because when you roam, Verizon only shares their 2G (not 3G) speeds.

Yes indeed VZW 3g is nice. Sprint in Louisiana is horrible...20 kilobit to 50 kilobits for me. Data is useless unless I force roam.
My speeds in Tallahassee were great for about the first 4-6 months of owning the phone, now it's merely decent and there's been no improvement.

[Q] Help me with my HTC MyTouCh 4G

greetings Friends
As I can restore my HTC MyTouch 4G to the original? updated with GB but do not know if this has influenced the network! It really is 4G?
I think what your asking is, after upgrading to gingerbread mysense you are suspicious that the 4g is no longer 4g. I'm not sure why your suspicious but i can assure you that it is 4g... Well by T-mobile's standards because they use HSPA+ as opposed to LTE but never mind that's a different subject, the 4g is 4g
Just download a speed test from the Market and check for yourself if u have 4g coverage in your area and in your rate plan then it should show 4g speeds

It supports the 21mbps speeds of hspa just wont support there 4g LTE
Careful though... Just because at&t might offer it somewhere doesn't mean you'll have it in your area. I'm in the Chicagoland area, arguably one of the largest markets in this country, and all they offer here is hspa 15 because of their LTE focus. So you might not want to focus your decision on the fact that hspa 21+ is technically possible through at&t.

Well, according to this link, even at&t refers to the number of the hspa+ revision as it's top speed, so if you could show me something explaining why that's not correct, they would be great.

joshnichols189 is correct. Here is why:
HSPA-15 on your phone refers to Network type, not the max download rate. See the codes posted here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029722
Download max on HSPA-15 (HSPA+ or 4G) are 42.2, 21.1, and 14.0
Download max on HSPA-10 (HSPA or 3G) is 7.2
For more on the true max speed, see this Wiki page:

b vs B. If both of you stayed true to b = bit and B = byte, the highest you've ever gotten was only 1.25MB/s.
can anyone confirm all the posts online are not needed to get hspa+ on ATT with nexus 4? links like below say you need to have ATT do something with a fake IMEI since it couldnt detect mine and then set custom APN settings. My status bar says H but about this phone says HSPA+:15 for mobile network type. My phone when simw as inserted automatically set wap.cingular and all that and when i use speedtest.net app the ping comes back but fails to test the up and down speed. Any help is appreciated, i figure they people on this forum would know best.
PS. it wont let me post links until 10 posts. pm for links if needed.
