When is a 4G plan just a 3G plan? You will have to ask AT&T since the communications giant has flipped the switch on the new smartphones. AT&T has been pelted with customer complaints, so instead of fixing the problem, the company simply turned off the 4G capabilities. Neat solution, no?
For AT&T's consumer and small-business customers, however, two years is a device lifetime, Pierce noted. "AT&T's HSUPA lapse is certainly providing 4G-hungry customers with ample reason to seek out other providers," she added.
http://www.hardocp.com/news/2011/04/02/att_turns_off_4g_on_new_motorola_htc_phones/
They didn't turn anything off. HSUPA simply hasn't been enabled yet. Their response to the complaints was an explanation, not the process of turning off 4G. 4G upload speeds have been off from the beginning and will be off until they deem the network ready.
We're getting HSUPA this month

That would be April 4th he's talking about. FCC is forcing AT&T to enable HSUPA/HSPA+.
http://www.slashgear.com/htc-inspire-4g-to-finally-get-real-att-4g-access-after-fcc-filing-25142654/
The article says Inspire, but it goes for every '4g' phone out there.
That article talks about HTC requesting and receiving permission from the FCC to enable the "4G" part of the phone. Has nothing to for with Motorola or when they will update their software

people are confused about HSUPA.
HSUPA, while mildly helps download, its primary feature is boosting upload speeds. This will not make "4g" better, but will give you speeds phones like the iphone or unlocked phones have had for over a year.

Most people understand HSUPA is upload, and that we're not going to get 20 mbps down.

What are you talking about? The FCC isn't forcing anything...they couldn't care less. HTC informed the FCC that they want to enable HSUPA on the Inspire and the FCC granted their request after a few weeks of testing. They hope to have the patch out soon, but that's all up to AT&T...HTC has no control over whether the phone gets a patch. They will give the patch to AT&T and AT&T will decide when to OTA it to the phones.
The same exact thing is true for Motorola and the Atrix. Motorola has made the filing with the FCC for a patch, but to my knowledge it hasn't even been approved yet and even when it is...it still comes down to when AT&T wants to implement it. I'm not sure you understand how filing is done with the FCC...
And to the OP: You literally just copied and pasted the article with absolutely not a word from yourself. On top of that, it's incorrect. There's no "switch" that AT&T has flipped. They're enabling 4G across the country slowly in a few select markets and they expect to have it ready to go in the next month or 2. Once they're ready they'll enable it cross-country...but until then they haven't "turned off" anything...it was never on.
Furthermore, if you would have followed the link you'd find, at least, that *THAT* particular piece of information is correct in the original article...but they're wrong about just about everything else. The thing people don't realize is that HSUPA is *NOT* 4G...it's been around on AT&T's network for the past year or 2 already...the problem is the iPhones are the only devices that make use of it. HSPA+ is what AT&T is considering 4G...and *THAT* is the reason these phones are called 4G phones (because they'll be able to use it probably around summer or earlier).
As well, Lisa Pierce is a lunatic (the contributor to the article). She makes the point that AT&T isn't enabling HSUPA (which she consistently calls AT&T's 4G service...despite it only being an Upload data-connection...when she means to say HSPA+) because of their possible acquisition of T-Mobile and the soon-to-come LTE network. The problem with that "theory" is that AT&T had their HSPA+ and LTE structure planned out well before vying for T-Mobile's shares. They've said for a year they hope to have HSPA+ out by around this summer with LTE late 2011 to early 2012. None of that has changed...
Read the article then read my reply. You claimed the FCC forced AT&T to enable HSUPA and it does not say that. Only that HTC applied for and was granted permission to apply a patch to the captivate.

let it die, and quit charging me the extra $10 a month.
Ok...so what does that mean for us who own a Evo?? No 4g?
If they switch to LTE will the EVO work with LTE?
No.....By the time they get LTE up and running....the evo will be obsolete and another phone with reign supreme......with LTE on board.
we will still have 4G coverage........im sure they had a contract in place for the use of their towers......comapnies just cant pull out of things such as this.
If this is the end of WiMAX then I'm getting out of my contract without the ETA. Sprint promised me 4G in my area prior to me signing up for this bull**** by the end of the year. If that ain't happening - bye bye Sprint hello Criket. Sick of this crap anyway.

Wimax has been just a transitional technology from the start. It was a great idea initially, but took too long to implement and LTE is the future. Sprint WILL utilize LTE in the future, and our precious EVOs will be long forgotten by then anyway. I feel bad for anyone that was in the longhaul for CLWR since their IPO.

bender u have no idea what you are talking about... just keep following verizons bs. There are over 500 wimax networks world wide. wimax isnt going anywhere
Clear has stated that they have begun lte trials, sprint has stated that they will upgrade when they feel they can justify the costs, and further stated that even after they begin supporting lte they will continue to support wimax, and there have been several instances where various representatives have stated sprint is conducting trials for voice+data on wimax so it may well replace the 1xrtt/evdo rev.a standard they are using now, its also been stated that the initial differences in wimax and lte was not hardware but software and it is possible to update wimax compatible devices to run on lte but i doubt they mean at lte speeds, the way they said it seemed to hint that it was more of a work around, on top of that japan is testing the next wimax standard which has a theoretical limit of 300Mb and they are barely testing at around 54Mb, and as for the whole resigning thing, they stated that due to some changes in law dan hessey and others would resign in the interest of both company's and that both sides discussed it thoroughly, but they keep most of the controlling interest, and they reserve the right to appoint anyone to replace them and other board members in the future should they feel the need to do so, Sprint will still maintain the presence that they did before resigning
If you read my post you would see that I said our EVOs would be long forgotten by then. Yes Sprint is going to expand their current 4g network based on wimax for some time, but they will eventually convert to LTE. They have built their infrastructure with the flexibility to eventually make the transition to LTE.
Try researching before attacking DRK!

Someone on AndroidSPIN mentioned this and I figured it deserved it's own topic because this may be hard evidence and not speculation.

There seems to be credible evidence here that the original Vibrant, at least in theory should support 14.4 : Halfway down the page, it mentions the samsung vibrant using the infineon 5703, which on their site, lists Class 10 as the chip support (14.4 speed)

If the SGS does, in fact, have that chip- it could support 14.4 and be software locked to prevent it from accessing it. Anyone who knows more about hardware wanna take a stab at this? Thanks Steven at AndroidSPIN for bringing these facts out.
that is quite intriguing. Wonder what the "unlock key" is for this thing (if this is true.)
Nice post, I was just mentioning something like this in another thread.
It looks like they tore down a euro I9000 tho, not a T959.
I'm still willing to bet it's the same chip.
Now to find the method they used to cripple it.....
I think they have the same chips.
Interesting, that would be awesome if this was true and we were able to get 4G!
The Vibrant is capable of HSPA, not HSPA+. Basically meaning the Vibrant can use the tmobile 4g network but NOT at the advertised HSPA+ speeds. You will NOT be seeing 14mbs downloads on the carriers network.

Do you know anything about hspa? The 7.2 hspa uses 16qam the 21 hspa+ uses 64qam. Same technology, same band. Simply faster modulation unless they use duel band in which both techs are supported. Im saying its possible. Not that it does or doesn't but I can debunk the not possible.

AT&T has upgraded almost all of their 3G network to HSPA+ already. The reason AT&T speeds are slower than T-Mobile speeds is the simple fact that they have considerably more customers accessing their network at any given time.

I tried what you said and yes a menu does come up, BUT, the selections are
1 Automatic
2 WCDMA BAND (Which is only GSM 3G)
3 GSM BAND (EDGE/GPRS)
4 COMBI BANDS.
It would seem if the theory is true, then certian software would have to be mod(ROMS) so that it would unlock or reconize the chip as being able to use the 4G data side for T-mobile/ATT. I know all of T-mobiles sim cards are the same regardless if you have a 4G phone or not. If the device/phone is able to pick up the signal it will automaticly, I don't think there is a separate data plan for the 4G(I'll be talking to tech support to verify) But Tmobile is switching to newer sim cards that will work better with there network in every phone regardless if its 4G/3G/or Edge.
i just got off the chat with a rep about the sim card thing
Julian Magana: if i enable 4g threw my plan will i need a new sim card
~Michael C: Welcome to T-Mobile Chat service Julian. My name is Michael and for your reference my rep ID is 13-20364. First, please allow me one moment to review the information you have provided.
Julian Magana: hello
~Michael C: Thank you for your patience. All of the our data plans for Smartphones will support the 4G speeds. There's no need to change your SIM card.
Julian Magana: ive seen several articles out the the vibrant + and the original vibrant are the exact same thing minus the ffc
~Michael C: I can't really say anything until Samsung releases the specifications of the new phone, since we don't have any information on it yet. It's possible that it could be 4G since we have a few 4G devices out, but we can't tell until Samsung releases the information.
Julian Magana: ok and i found this which compares both + and original
Julian Magana: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Samsung-Vibrant-4G,Samsung-Vibrant/phones/5138,4747
Julian Magana: what do u know about that
~Michael C: I can't verify how accurate the information is because the details haven't been officially announced. According to that link it supports current 4G speeds (21 mbps)
Julian Magana: so if rumors are true, then the original vibrant can fully utilize 4g speeds but samsung has it hardware locked correct?
~Michael C: I haven't seen any cases where a phone was able to go from 3G to 4G speeds because of the firmware, the phone would need to be designed to use the 4G network.
Julian Magana: meaning a 4g antenna correct?
~Michael C: I'm not sure of the exact details, but the hardware needs to be built to use the 4G network. The Vibrant was a 3G phone released before we made any 4G phones, I don't think changing the original Vibrants to 4G would be an option.
Julian Magana: well if thats the case then im sure there will be a 4g antenna mod
Julian Magana: thats all the questions i have thank you for ur help

Just an observation but can the T-Mobile techs on chat get just a little bit of credit for...
1. being fairly knowledgeable about their products
2. doing a pretty good job of not promising something they know they can't deliver
3. being nice enough to put up the sh*t we propeller heads tend to give them via a chat or phone support session?
I know this isn't quite the right thread for it but a good part of the reason I've stuck with T-Mobile all these years is that they have always seemed to do a better job at supporting their products than their competitors...
So, lets give them credit if credit is due to them for doing a good job in the face of the swelling public outcry!

Exactly...2-3 years until they're converted to lte, so wimax as normal.
Old news that I've probably mentioned 6 times since posting in this very section. Project Leapfrog was the codename for Sprint's Network Vision. Isn't wimax to LTE as simple as a change in software? I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the wimax chips in our evos could in theory pick up the low frequency signal of LTE. Then again, I have no idea just reposting what I've heard said elsewhere.

On the tower side, the hardware used in the base-stations can apparently be updated very readily -- swapping some circuit boards, and doing a software update, to make them LTE ready.
As to our phones, there is some disagreement. The LTE spec allows carriers to use frequencies in the range of those that our phones can already receive. Whether the hardware/software combination exists to let our phones receive LTE data, is up to debate. Many say no, but based on the spec, a Wimax antenna operating in the either the 800Mhz, 1.6Ghz or 2Ghz range can receive the signals (see Uplink and Downlink bands here: http://www.radio-electronics.com/in...ong-term-evolution/lte-frequency-spectrum.php), but can the phone discriminate and use what it receives? Who knows...

AT&T’s Fake 4G Phones May Actually Get Real 4G Soon
Brian Barrett — It's been well documented that AT&T's 4G phones aren't just slow—their upload speeds are often slower than its 3G network. So what happened to that extra G? Turns out it's not the network itself that's borked; it's the phones. AT&T has intentionally crippled the Motorola Atrix and HTC Inspire—the carrier's only fourth-gen network phones—by actively disabling the handsets' HSUPA capability. Gross. But there may be sweet relief coming soon.
AT&T says that they'll activate HSUPA in the Inspire and Atrix in April with a software update, according to Wired, and that the Samsung Infuse 4G will launch with HSUPA turned on. Why the delay at all? They're apparently performing "the testing and preparations necessary" for people to enjoy the HSUPA experience.
Just to reiterate: the Atrix and Inspire are presumably fully capable of achieving the 5.5+ Mbps speeds promised by HUSPA, but until AT&T flips that switch they're stuck with an embarrassing 300 Kbps upload speed. It's great that 4G may be fully functional soon! Both both phones have been advertised and sold since launch as 4G devices. And it's not like AT&T warns people in advance that their fancy new 4G handset may well be slower than their old one.
It's true that the definition of 4G is a moving target, essentially a slightly different fabrication told by each carrier. But being HSUPA-capable doesn't make a phone 4G if that HSUPA is disabled. You know what other devices are HSUPA-ready? The iPhone 4. iPad 2. And no one's slapping a 4G label on them.
When I buy a loaf of bread, I don't expect to see a lump of raw dough in the bag. And that's what AT&T's selling right now: "4G" phones that are half-baked, at best. [Wired]

No.... it hasn't.... but the general public labels it as such. I was actually down at an AT&T store when i was getting my SIM switched in my Atrix, and someone was there looking at iPhones. They kept questioning about 4G and why the iPhone 4G wasn't a 4G phone. I wanted to say something to them, but i figured i'd let the sales rep handle it. Was even funnier when the customers said "Well i don't want to get a 3G phone and have 3G no longer work when 4G is available". She handled that one nicely too, saying that won't happen since 3G is what a 4G phone will fall back on when the 4G network isn't available.
edit: and i actually just posted this article in the main General topic for all phones since it also takes the Inspire into account.... didn't notice it was already posted here, too.
Found the following this morning:
2011-Network-Upgrade-Plans
Links at this address take you to AT&T press release pages for HSPA+.
Possible cities getting LTE 1st from a different source...........Not to be confused with the HSPA+ info linked above:
Houston
Puerto Rico
Dallas-Fort Worth
Austin
San Antonio
Charlotte
Raleigh
Let me clarify for the idiots who feel they don't need to follow the link and actually read the press releases....................The link takes you to HSPA+ press releases........................The short list is a list of probable areas which will see LTE 1st! Let me also add that I AM NOT saying this is a matter of actual fact, but I think coming from AT&T press releases, lies or not, it's more accurate than anybody here taking a "guess"!
People shouldn't believe everything they hear and or read.

Hear that a lot do you?
I posted this as it's quite possibly an idea of which cities/areas will get HSPA+ this year showing AT&T's press releases. Now, if you have information to the contrary, please post it. If not, please troll somewhere else, or at least say something productive.
How is this "trolling" ? All I said was people shouldn't be so quick to accept these statements as true. Companies can spout all the drivel in the world and until it actually happens then it's nothing but that, drivel.
I don't believe anything until it happens, nor am I optimistic as most people.
Have a nice day, move along now.

No, that's not what you said.............see your 1st post!
At least this one was somewhat constructive and had some thought go into it. Yes, I believe I will move "along"! Thanks, have a nice day also!
I'll believe it when I see it, until then I will enjoy my pseudo 3g.
I hope they bring it to Dallas first

Makes sense they would get TX set up 1st given that corporate HQ is there.

well isn't that grand. They are saying by 2012 that they will have less than 10 areas in which their purported high speed will be active? At this rate, our 4g phones will be outdated before 4g is available. so sad at&t...
No one noticed that the name of this thread is "...HSPA+" but the list is for LTE roll-out? Different, incompatible technology, people. The Atrix is NOT an LTE device.
I noticed that too. I was thinking what does LTE have to do with HSPA+ ? And... since the Atrix doesn't support LTE, I'm pining for a 4.3" HTC phone with LTE on AT&T. GSM Thunderbolt?
Hsdpa+ in RI f yeah every network has 4g here lmao

Ever think about reading the damned links?????
The short list I added was a purported future LTE list!
If you follow the link I posted, and actually READ, you will see the following at the bottom of all the press releases:
** 4G speeds delivered by HSPA+ with enhanced backhaul. Will be available in limited areas. Availability increasing with ongoing backhaul deployment. Requires 4G device. Learn more at att.com/network.
<edit> You know, people generally annoy me, but STUPID people really piss me off!
Damn, I didn't notice that.
Boston is supposed to be an HSPA+ city but I never see speeds above what I used to see on my Nexus One (~3.5mbps max)
Can't wait for it to hit Cincy

I talked to an AT&T rep a little over a week ago about an unrelated issue and asked about the situation here in the Boston area. She said there were no towers she could see listed with dates for upgrades in the area yet for HSPA+, and that some towers still were running 2G. She said they hoped by the end of the year we would be on it.

Really? I could've sworn I saw on some AT&T map that Boston had HSPA+ enabled
That was exactly my point...you posted a list for LTE which is a different technology than HSPA+. Don't get your panties in a twist there, cupcake.
For the record I replied BEFORE you posted anything about HSPA+. Maybe try reading timestamps before unnecessarily going off on someone.
