Project Leapfrog - Sprint is going to LTE...starting now! - EVO 4G General

Not sure what they're leapfrogging over, but sure.
Maybe the true EVO 2 will have LTE!
Also says something about the planned upgrade to the current CDMA network, and killing off iDEN.
Like Carbon Fiber? EVO.carbonfibermagic.com

That's what I think, too!

If they move to LTE, all us us evo owner's should get a free upgrade to an lte phone, as our phones will be useless for what we bought them for.

If the rest of the post is also correct, they are releasing a wimax version of the blackberry tablet later this year...which indicates they aren't phasing out wimax just yet. so, no...prolly not getting a free upgrade out of this.

Exactly...2-3 years until they're converted to lte, so wimax as normal.

Old news that I've probably mentioned 6 times since posting in this very section. Project Leapfrog was the codename for Sprint's Network Vision. I'm just patiently waiting for Sprint/Clearwire to officially announce LTE is a go, so I could retire this topic. Sprint's ****ty 3G network will be taken care of by this same project they've mentioned since December.

Isn't wimax to LTE as simple as a change in software? I could be wrong but I was under the impression that the wimax chips in our evos could in theory pick up the low frequency signal of LTE. Then again, I have no idea just reposting what I've heard said elsewhere.

On the tower side, the hardware used in the base-stations can apparently be updated very readily -- swapping some circuit boards, and doing a software update, to make them LTE ready.
As to our phones, there is some disagreement. The LTE spec allows carriers to use frequencies in the range of those that our phones can already receive. Whether the hardware/software combination exists to let our phones receive LTE data, is up to debate. Many say no, but based on the spec, a Wimax antenna operating in the either the 800Mhz, 1.6Ghz or 2Ghz range can receive the signals (see Uplink and Downlink bands here: http://www.radio-electronics.com/in...ong-term-evolution/lte-frequency-spectrum.php), but can the phone discriminate and use what it receives? Who knows...

Great move if you ask me. And I don't know about anyone else but the places I've lived and traveling the Midwest parts of the south and here in the west coast sprints 3g has been my favorite. I also have an att and T-Mobile phone for business.... now talk about ****ty coverage lol.

Thoughts about Sprint going to LTE

I have some theories about why Sprint might be going to LTE. Qualcomm has integrated LTE into their newer Snapdragon chips.
Meaning:
1) No need for additional wimax chip
2) Possible better integration into OS, particularly if Google adds LTE to Android.
3) Possible seamless transitions to 4G/3G
4) Mfrs. will be making LTE phones for AT&T and Veirzon. Adding Wimax for Sprint will add to design/implementation/testing cost.
5) Verizon is doing the work for Voice (and text) over LTE, may be easier to piggyback off of that than to develop it for WiMax
6) LTE is already specified/tested for the 800 Mhz bandwidth that Sprint wants to deploy 4G on whereas Wimax is not
1, sprint rushed to be the industry first with 4g.
2, Clearwire didn't have a solid financial foundation and wont give up enough control for sprints liking so they wont move forward with clear.
3,Lightsquared might just give up enough rights to there LTE network to make it profitable for sprint to make the transition seamlessly as possible with a simple chip swap in there towers and software update in house to make the transition.
There are some Pro's too this for the end user.
1, cheaper handsets, to the public
2, better pricing from the carriers
umm in a nutshell signal at 800mhz travels further and penetrates better. network infrastructure for LTE and Wimax make it easy to switch. So if you can get similar speeds, with less LTE antennas and better penetration, I cant see any reason why Sprint wouldnt make the jump. Plus Clear aint looking to good lol
good read if you have the time to read everything there and the links shown too.
http://androidforums.com/sprint/272829-lte-vs-wimax-charges-control-data.html
Clear did a piss poor job of building out their 4g network. They were also hell bent on providing retail services to end consumers. Money was spent on providing retail services (retail employees, store front, etc) that could have been better spent on building the network.
My house doesn't get 4g, my subdivision is like an island surrounded by 4g. Just a few blocks away are a couple of apartment complexes, and there used to be a sign from Clear stating '10mb/s tested here' or something to that effect. So it almost seems like they were focused on building out a network in a way so their retail side could make more sales. The focused should have been building solid coverage. Right now 4g is too spotty and I rarely turn it on. It's only useful if you're stationary. This is in Houston, one of the first areas to get 4g.
This is all my opinion of course. I think this is why Sprint wants to build out their own lte network. Sprint wanted Clear to coordinate with Sprint on the buildout, clear wanted to do their own thing and had dreams of having a successful retail side. Now they're broke and wimax build out has slowed to a crawl.

Yes they "could" be controlled but the point the poster "RiverofIce" was saying is that it isn't allowed to be done with WiMax in the first place.
the third post has the doc links supporting the LTE policy's and how they will manage the traffic.
form that link.. (which i am the OP of)
you can see how the other carriers with lte are planning to make it a toll road of it... this is 100% going to happen on lte.
wimax .. is open.. full access and should not be limited... of course anything can be designed or created to limit it.
i would rather take my chances with a maybe.. than a 100% sure pocket robbery.

What is the source for the claim that WiMax must be a neutral network? Who enforces this?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
LTE in and of itself is open as well. It's just that there are no rules governing putting in toll roads like on WiMAX. It's just like Android is in and of itself open-source, but others (HTC Sense, MIUI, etc) can and do create closed source iterations. Sprint going LTE doesn't preclude that they will put up toll roads.
hmmm net neutrality. Very controversial topic being debated on the hill with millions of dollars of lobbyist money. I'm more worried about where Justin bieber keeps his rabbit. Now thY
at would be an announcement show.
I'm no business genius but I propose a question.
What if Sprint is just letting Clear wither away for a while so it will be cheaper to buy them up and then do whatever the hell they want to with the network?

Sprint switcing from Wimax

Well as many of you read on Engadget about Sprint switching from WiMax to LTE. Well naturally being curious, while I was stopping by my parents house on the way home I asked my dad who worked in telecom for most of my life doing contract work for Sprint. He now has since moved out telecom to some other department, but he still keeps up with his telecom friends who do contracting work for Sprint. Anyways back to the point I asked if these rumors were true. He said Yes they are switching from WiMax, but not to what and that Samsung is providing the equipment. If i find out anymore information I will let you know.

There aren't phasing out WiMax yet from what it sounds like, but since the Evo 4G wasn't designed with LTE in mind then no the LTE won't work on the Evo.

but does this mean that they are going to stop expanding the 4g network, and focus only on getting LTE up in more places? this is kind of a kick in the balls for people who just bought 4g capable devices with sprint.
They'll probably continue to expand and run Wimax on 2.5 Ghz and run LTE in parallel on 850 Mhz.

the Evo 2A will have lte, I promise
Edit: I am changing this because I read this post wrong. You are right they are about to use Samsung products on the new towers but its not to change wimax, it is to make the towers more efficient and smaller. From what I was told they will use new technology which will allow them to add all services on one tower and be able to free up frequency to build out. It would not be imho to drop wimax because they will be the only ones to utilize it giving them an advantage in developing. Back on topic he is correct they are making upgrades and using new hardware within the towers but I think its imho to have voice/data simultaneous on a cdma network (a first) and they will do it with wimax 2 starting 2012...(that is just my opinion)

I believe I know the article you are referring to as it was in another thread on here and discussed the new PTT service they will use once IDEN is turned off and it will include more speeds and the likes for data.
The way I took the article was that the new PTT phones will take advantage of the new network upgrade they are performing i think its called Sprints Network vision. The multimode base-stations will be the key to it all.
In the end the change allows them to use all the networks more interchangably from what I understand.
I would not expect them to keep the 800MHz band for CDMA PTT. they stated that CDMA PTT phones will be out late this year and if thats the case and they were planning on having them run on the IDEN 800MHz band wouldn't IDEN need to be shut off first? I take it as the CDMA PTT phones will run on the regular network and use data form the 800MHz once they deploy LTE on that. they can't put WiMax on the 800MHz b/c WiMax isn't provisioned in that spectrum at this point.
As I stated in my edited reply it would not make sense to use technology the others are using because it would not make good marketing. Also wimax 2 will be out second quarter or half this year, can't recall, and around the exact same time frame for those new phones. Also the new hardware being supplied to sprint and their new plan is at the core of what wimax 2 is. Which is stated to give better download speed and efficiency thru multi data channels. The company supplying the hardware, Samsung, also The first company to test wimax 2 and said it got 130mbs download, but that's with no one else testing it. But you get the picture.... I hope

An LTE roll out for Sprint will happen.
It's been talked about that Sprint may embrace both LTE and Wimax standards.
However, it's not an instant process and a phone would have to have an LTE radio to use the LTE band.

In 20 days some sort of deal might go down, or they might start some sort of project, but there's no way they can instantly switch and certainly not in such a short timeframe.
IF Sprint drops Clearwire then yes, Wimax would not work with Sprint phones.
It's been suggested that Sprint may go to quadband phones though.
Who knows. I'm not even sure Sprint does, which is part of the problem.

Sounds like a good idea actually.
And it coincides with the idea that Sprint might just run both standards along side CDMA (which would eventually be phased out, eventually.)
Both LTE and Wimax have uses.
Why shouldn't both technologies be used for what they do best?

In 2009, the ITU-R organization specified the IMT-Advanced (International Mobile Telecommunications Advanced) requirements for 4G standards, setting peak speed requirements for 4G service at 100 Mbit/s for high mobility communication (such as from trains and cars) and 1 Gbit/s for low mobility communication (such as pedestrians and stationary users).[1]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
Basically, 1 Gbit/s when not moving, 100mbit/s when moving and VOIP.
Everything runs through data.
Texting, Voice as well.

They have pretty much done that:

I think that this is potentially great news. Considering that Sprint just posted another nearly billion dollars in loss for the second quarter, they need a shot in the arm badly. Instant nation-wide LTE would be a big boost to them. If they got this along with the new iPhone, I think that they could really start making some headway against the bigger phone companies.
I hope so, at any rate. I am rooting for Sprint (no pun intended) in a big way, because if they went out of business or, worse, were bought by one of the big two, I don't know what I'd do.
a lot of money needs to be pulled somewhere to make this LTE happen. I belive LTE is why Verizon charges so much for data. I hope this don't mean the end of unlimited data in the future.
I'd prefer unlimited Wimax over $80 10gb LTE any day of the week

I have a real hard time believing anyone at the Sprint store (save for MAYBE corporate) would know anything about new phones, much less be able to show you. In my experience, the in store people are more clueless about their own phones then their users are.
But i digress. I thought Sprint was going to use the LTE on the backend (i can't remember the term, backhaul, backbone, etc) to speed up wimax AND 3G in one fell swoop.

network vision upgrades are part of phasing out nextel iden phones. they are switching all iden customers over to the new cdma ptt thing they have, and will have phones supporting it out later this year. I'm pretty sure iden is set to run till 2013 too.
wimax can't run on 800MHz less they get it provisioned with the FCC to run on that freq too b/c right now its only provisioned for the higher band ones for some reason.
theres no clue what exactly they are going to do with wimax in the far future exactly wether it be for backhaul or something else.
The lightsquared deal gets lightsquare the ability to set up their lte on sprints network and they plan to have it rolled out to first markets in 2012, and will have nationwide coverage over one year ahead of the FCC mandate which puts it around 2014

I believe that you are correct. There was an article not long ago elaborating on Sprint's plan to move to LTE in the future due to both Clearwire's financial troubles and instability, as well as LTE's ultimate higher potential.
It stated that as the move to LTE gets closer, phones that support both will begin to be released. However, I was made to understand that LTE and WiMAX require different hardware so they would both have to be included. This would appear to indicate that a software/firmware update to an existing phone designed for WiMAX would not be a reality.

I talked to one of the service people at sprint and he said its going to be a software upgrade for all the current wimax phones. He also gave me a sneak peek of some of their new phones coming out.

Lightsquared still has to get the interference problem with GPS sorted out.

They have pretty much done that:

They actually aren't even close to working that out yet. As a matter of fact, all of the major aviation related industry groups have just formed a coalition (click this link to see the coalition web page) to fight Lightsquared's proposal. The problem is, Lightsquared's so called "solution" is to require all GPS equipment manufactures to upgrade their devices to eliminate the interference that Lightsquared's system would cause. This is probably not going to happen, as it would cost thousands of dollars each to replace the GPS navigation system in every aircraft that has one, which includes the majority of aircraft currently flying in the US, including US military aircraft. Because it is a flight safety issue, and their current proposed solution would involve millions, or even billions of dollars to implement, I seriously doubt a solution that will allow Lightsquared to go forward will come very soon.
While I am by no means an expert on the technology, my understanding of the problem is that Lightsquared's high powered land based transmitters operate on a frequency band so close to the band that GPS satellite's low powered downlink signals are transmitted on, that they basically jam the signal that the GPS receivers are trying to receive. The result is that GPS receivers are effectively useless when operating anywhere near a Lightsquared transmitter. Sounds pretty hard to fix to me.
wanted to comment again on the Lightsquared LTE talk about the interference with GPS devices. The CEO was on CNBC this past week and when the question came up about the interference it was pretty simple answer and it really made it seem like the media has gotten it all backwards.
The FCC has mandated they have a buildout done by time X and granted them access to spectrum X. Well the interference with GPS devices that has come up is not b/c of Lightsquared's fault, it is b/c the GPS devices are not filtering out lightsquared's freq/spectrum even though they were given years head notice that this would be happening. So its b/c the GPS devices are coming onto Lightsquared's area and not the other way around.
the gps issue is a non issue with regards to lightsquared b/c its not their fault, its the gps manufacturers for not taking proper measures to be ready for lightsquareds rollout when they knew way in advance.

I was told Sprint is merging with Verizon on LTE

Sprint will reveal in October the news that they will be sharing the LTE signal and towers with Verizon. According to something I read and a employee dude in the Sprint store told me. Anyone has any info on this?

Verizon owns their network.
They might have a deal (much like the cdma deal) where they will be able to roam across networks...but its highly unlikely that Verizon would truly "share" their network with Sprint in the way you're thinking. (As in how Clear has with wimax)

Im wondering if wimax radios will become useful for nothing.

I See this happening for only one reason.
It would be way cheaper.
The companies could use a data swapping model.
The two companies would swap equal amounts of data for no charge. and charge who ever uses more.
This method would allow the companies to expand their network and advertise they have more coverage.
\It will not be free but it will need to have some sort of method for finding out who uses what data who is going to be charged. This would allow cheaper costs and to have a huge footprint rather fast. It will also give time for the companies to save $$$ and build out their networks and switch solely to their LTE towers.
Again these companies will never do this. BUT. LTE hopping while using some sort of data swapping...Ehh
May or may not happen.
ok...but how about all the wimax phones sprint has and none lte....

Folks, keep in mind that networks take a long time to be built.
But yes, Wimax is looking to become the next 'BetaMax'.

Its already useless where I live. I'm not to worried about LTE and switching phones since as mentioned it takes a while. Still waiting to get my hands on that new Galaxy model.

Evo, Evo Shift, Epic 4g, Evo 3d, Random Samsung phone, and the Epic Touch coming are all WiMax, so I doubt it'll become useless.
Its not like they're just gonna immediately shut down the Wimax network anyway.
If they do, by the time they do, no one will have a Wimax capable phone.
"Sprint on Thursday announced that it has inked a deal with LightSquared will see 4G LTE services built out on its massive nationwide network. LightSquared will pay Sprint $9 billion over 15 years for the right to build out its LTE network using Sprint infrastructure, and Sprint will also get a total of $4.5 billion in credits toward LTE and satellite service. Equally important to the nation’s No. 3 carrier, the deal will allow it to save about $13 billion in network build-out costs and cover 260 million Americans with its 4G LTE service by 2015."

Sprint will be using LTE but named differently to not "confuse" the consumer Jan 1st 2012
I call BULLSHxT!
Wimax isn't going away... It was designed as a back haul system... Wimax can carry alot more data than LTE because of the spectrum it uses but can't penetrate building worth a crap. Wimax makes an excellent tower to tower communications system that LTE could only dream of so the goal should be use both systems for there designed purpose.

i talked to sprint the other day and they are already doing it, however they are actually in the proccess of building there own 4g network with the lte technology to be completed by 2018.
