Just returned my captivate. So I have to wait till April 14 to get one of these phone from Rogers. Please share your ideas which is better. Thanks
I've not played with Arc in person, but I've read quite a few reviews on it. I think Arc has huge potential after SE unlocks the boot loader in the near future. Arc has a lot of features missing from NS, eg. 720p video recording, micro SD card slot, HDMI port, above average photo quality etc. The only advantages NS has over Arc I can think of are front facing camera and first to get updates.
Both the excellent phones I would say, but given a second chance, I would seriously consider getting an Arc instead. I do like the idea of having a micro SD card slot and an HDMI port. The photo quality is also a big plus. I would not worry so much about getting updates, as the boot loader becomes unlockable, a community will build around it. I'm fairly confident some dev will pick one up and port CM to it for example.
The Arc seemed nicer looking and supposed to be coming with unlocked bootloader. You'll miss out on the 'fastest' updates but you should be able to choose from many custom ROMs.
I might just get an Arc if i would have to choose now. But i'm still loving my Nexus S and I never regretted that decision.
isn't it only certain arc's that will have an unlocked bootloader, like i read that the carrier subsidized arc's will still be locked

I think your right. I remember reading from a blog post (one of the big named sites) saying that SE will unlock the bootloader, but the carriers might not like that. So if you buy the phone unlocked, it should have an unlocked bootloader. Also, if you buy it unlocked, you will get the updates faster than if you bought it via a carrier since SE did mention that carriers are the reason why their update for one of the Xperia phone wasn't getting it in a timely manner (I think it was At&t).
The Arc looks good. Tough call. If you could test drive both of them at the same time to test battery life and features, then I'd suggest that. Otherwise, hmm.......can't say.
i come from a SE X10 and i will never go back to a SE phone. yep, maybe they say that the bootloader is open, but i can't believe, because they told us so much "you will get that update, and that, and an open bootloader and and and". What we have? A locked phone and user who are hoping to get a free phone...my solution: i bought the nexus s
Ya x10 bootloader got cracked yesterday after year or so of devs trying. Rogers is getting the nexus s on April 14 im thinking to buy it cause Rogers owe me a phone cause I just sent my captivate that was under 15 days but hated the battery on captivate and most roms call volume was low. Is nexus s like this? Cause I already purchased cases but don't have the phone yet

I'm with rogers and having the same dilemma. I'm leaning towards the nexus because the main feature the arc had going for it (camera) is not significantly better then the nexus camera. No SD slot does not bother me and Dlna can make up for lack of HDMI
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
Nexus s it is then no SD doesn't bother me either. Don't care about 8mp camera. Nexus s camera should be good enough and also don't care for HDMI

Had the Sony X10, and Sony dissapointed me.. firstly with all the "add-ons" and then the lack of updates.. Used to love Sony but now have the nexus S and for me its a great phone with loads of potential especially with NFC...
Honestly the se arc has a very attractive build but the hummingbird with powervr trumps the snapdragon adreno combo no doubt , id go nexus s

You can't go wrong with NS either, I still love my NS very much as well. There's now a review of Arc on gsmarena, the audio quality seems mediocre, that would be a deal breaker for me. I can live without 720p video, mediocre camera, lack of micro SD card, but not mediocre sound quality!
What's mediocre?

Mediocre means subpar.
is it the SLCD version of the nexus; the canadian one that is?
The Canadian Nexus S should be i9023 aka the SLCD version.

0mega1 said he had his hands on the canadian retail one and its just a recalibrated version of the SAMOLED... now i don't know what to believe...
I'm not from Canada, so he may be right.
From what I know, only US and UK had the i9020. The rest of the world who only had the Nexus S recently, had i9023.
But I may be wrong.
I would go for the NS, because SE made some crappy and ugly phones in the past, remember camera phone and mp3 phone which personally I don't like. so for this I would rather wait for them to prove they did a great phone. ARC looks good the only thing I question is the ergonomy of the buttons.
How is the call volume on NS?

Ok now with the release of froyo im kind of regretting my purchase. I also bought it sort of over priced. Does anyone know any way to return it and get your money back? Ive had it for around a month.
Sent from my X10i using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
It does what the box says its meant to do and that hasn't changed since you bought it. You can't get a refund on something you bought just because some other company brought out a different product that you like better.
Sell it on eBay, you'll get most of your money back.

I hear you buddy. I've purchased the nexus one after about 1 month of owning the x10. I too believe I made the wrong choice. I'm probably going to sell the x10 after 2.1 update pedigree I need the money.

There won't be root on the X10 anytime soon or ever. The X10 isn't a popular device means less People work on it to archive Root. SE even doesn't care to provide us with up to date updates. 2.1 in Q4 , common :-D
I also going to sell my X10 , the Hardware isn't so good as i thought and the lack of updates + the non ability of having Root does the rest.
it seems we are in about the exact same position. how is your experience of the n1?
Sent from my X10i using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Sell it on ebay.
I hate saying the same thing in every thread but you knew froyo was coming to the N1 soon and that the x10 wouldn't get a serious update for a long time.
I had the N1 on 2.1 and returned it. No regrets. It was a fast phone (i hate laggy phones) but other than that I wasn't as impressed as I wanted to be. 2.2 is nice with flash but it's not making me run back to the N1.
can anyone tell me the difference between getting 2.2 through se vs through root? it feels like 2.2 from se is out of the question.
Sent from my X10i using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk
Through root, it's a custom made ROM, so whoever developed it can put whatever features in it. For example, they can make it look like HTC's SenseUI, and whichever version of Android they want.
Have faith, I would love android without sense and all that crap. 2.2 just like N1 would be great. I'm hoping for root in a couple of weeks or I'll probably sell my X10 too... But it's the most beautiful phone out there, miles and miles prettier than Desire and Nexus one put together my friends have both so I've tried both.

i bought it for around 600euros (my country is extremely overpriced but i wanted local warranty). just now one month later its dropped to 500 euros.

SE hasn't announced 2.2, only 2.1. So for us x10 users, right now we can only dream of 2.2.

IF the x10 ever get rooted, it will become a much superior phone. I can not believe the difference in speed just between a 2.1 n1 compared to the x10. Everything was as smooth as silk and not once will you experience any lag and dropped frames. Froyo n1 is another story though, the horsepower of the phone is just improved by many multitude and it renders websites or flash videos much better than my netbook ever could. When I first got the x10, I almost went back to my iPhone 3gs because of how sluggish the phone was, but I decided to give Android a 3rd chance and bought myself a n1. 3rd time is indeed the charm, and that phone is everything I've ever wanted from a cellphone. In conclusion, if you guys wait for 2.1, the x10 will be an awesome phone compared to what it is now, but if you are not willing to wait that long, purchasing the Nexus one would make a great decision.
Regardless, even with the update for x10, its users will still want the other update that brings even better performance.
So in the short and long run x10 users will be hoping and waiting for updates while other phones won't have to hope or wait thatong for improvements.
-------------------------------------

I've been wrestling with the idea of returning this too. However the first time i went to sell it. They annouced two updates one of them was should have been released by now, the other was set for Q4.
I kept hold of it thinking that they would come good, but the more and more I have it now the less I believe that that will be the case.
With all the comments on the blog and the petition, I think they may announce all the required bug fixes and android updates, with multitouch on the X10's successor.
The X10's rep is not good at the mo and im not sure that they will be able to recover it.

You just summed up and directly pointing to the phone Nexus One. If you want a phone that allows to get the fastest update, then Nexus One, if not, all other phones will take some time to get the update out.
Wow, this is one super-retarded thread.
Is there any reason for a happy Desire owner to buy a x10, there seem to be alot of pi**ed x10 owners. BTW i'm getting it at half the price but I want more good reasons anyone???

Any reason... Hmmm... Is your Desire broken????
There are plenty of reasons to own an X10. However I would read a construtive list of its short comings before you purchase.
If you bought the X10 based on its advertised spec you may be disappointed
when you come to use it.
The software features it boasts are not quite up to par in certain areas.
I also think coming from a HTC who are pro's in the android Device Market, You will be more critical of this device. HTC have had time to perfect Sense for there handsets.
If you were prepared to wait though the proposed updates may change this device completely.
Thanks for the feedback. My desire is working brilliantly and very happy with it, the main reason I'm considering x10 is because I'm getting it for £210 only used 4 few days. Is that a good price? This will be sort of backup handset.

Go for nexus s. As Sony sucks with updates and you will get update first with NS since its a Google phone
Arc for ant +.

I say Arc cuz I think it looks better an ha better specs plus Sony said they knkow how important and are growing hence gingerbread on arc

i think arc is better too...
-nexus s is the most bad phone i have ever seen!!
-arc is more beautiful!
-arc has better camera!!(censor is using by sony's professional digital cameras!
and the guy said buy nexus,he is one of those who bought x10 and is upset and disappointed because of it's update!!
Arc kicks ass I believe, getting mine tomorrow.
SE is more serious now about updates I think, and Arc is very well equipped.
Hi - You don't need to worry about SE updating the Arc... it will happen.. I have been "enroled" into a SE UK Elite Testlab and met with the MD of SE UK last week.. they are totally committed to getting this right and fully appreciate how important it is to keep the Android versions upto date for a reasonable length of time.. as well as more minor UI upgrades in between..
Arc any day of the week and twice on Sundays!

I bet Sony Ericsson did same stuff like before like x10 where you plug 3rd party earbuds with mic and they wont work. So you have to buy their crappy earbuds

I would like to add an example to that,
R800i ( Xperia Play ) was released in UK between 31/3 and 1st/4...
three days later, they already made an update on the air to fix a minor bug...
Now if you don't consider that keeping you updated and as a great support then I'm not sure what will be

Arc is so much better... Looks stunning too
I have to admit that I always consider getting the Nexus S but they never had it on 850 3G till recently and they have it white too and I was investigating. reason is that Google makes the android and S is a Google phone therefore you get updates on time(supposedly) but then I always find myself going back to SE.
It would be nice if you could review a comparison with two phones little details as I can see the specs on website.
Only thing pisses me off right now @ this moment is that no one carries arc in the US and even if they do, it would be ATT with the crappy service and its not available yet.
NA sucks in terms of getting new technologies on time.
Rogers is getting nexus s on 14th and also arc on 14-21st.
Arc is 549$ with no contract. Promo is 99$ on 3 year agreement after that $399 on 3 year contract WOW

Between the Arc and the Nexus S...
I say this grudgingly... get the Arc. Samsung Phones have GREAT hardware... but I never liked the galaxy S' build quality.
Between the Arc and the Desire HD? Desire HD ALL THE WAY.
Desire HD has Noise Cancellation + better build quality + SLCD Screen

hmmm, Noise Cancellation is available with Arc, so I'd say Better build quality + SLCD screen
Wow dont even think about Desire HD - its awsome to play around with custom roms and the build quality is good (even dough the plastik covers on the back tend to make a noise every time i grab the phone) BUT
Desire HD
- Camera sucks big time!! No comparison to arc !
- its to heavy ( dont try to hold it over your head while reading in bed)
- screen on DHD is so washed out compared to arc its really like greyish in comparison
On Desire HD there are always about 20% cpu usage due to al the sense modifications
And here we come to the worst part - battery is just bad (and I had every custom rom and kernel that is available on my DHD)
I got trough the day but with nothing left while with the arc even the first day finished with 45% left
Sorry but I had to get that one out couse DHD is really nice for winter time when I was always able to charge it but now in spring when your on the go its just not enough battery.
Go for the arc its even cheaper where I live (germany)

Hi everyone, I'm really interested to get a new phone android phone. I have only 2 choices here which is
Nexus S
Xperia arc

Thanks
Haven't heard too much about the Xperia Arc but you can take a look at some of the reviews and compare them to the Nexus S and see which one you would like more:
Xperia Arc Review: http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/30/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-review/
Nexus S Review: http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/10/nexus-s-review/
All that said, we liked the Arc and we think it has a lot to offer to the right sort of buyer. If you're obsessive about display technologies and vanilla Google software like we are, we'd advise looking at the tried and tested Nexus S. But if you just fancy an uncomplicated, big-screened phone to enjoy movies on during your daily commute, the Xperia Arc might just be your perfect candidate. It doesn't really lack anything on the feature front, but it's Sony Ericsson's execution and occasionally odd design choices that hold it back from being a triumph.

Call volume is fine. Battery is perfectly fine, one of the best (some people will debate about this.. but personally for me it has been really good).
NFC is still relatively new technology and it depends on your area. It's probably pretty pointless right now but it'll become big in the future.
Check with the store selling NS in Canada for its return policy. You can return it if you don't like it.
im running out of sony ericson after the X10.
Defiantly NS. Sony is crapware
I have the NS, and my buddy just bought the Arc 2 weeks ago. I must say go for NS. Arc gets real hot after gaming at the back part of the ear piece. The heat can be felt from the front as well, making calls uncomfortable after gaming. No front facing camera, which we should be expecting more and better softwares that uses it. Oh, the auto dimming is kinda weird, it makes the screen flickers the whole time, you can definitely notice it, my buddy and I thought it was a defect at first, but another buddy who bought the Arc also had the same thing going on.
Widgets/ sony skin is not bad if you prefer non stock look. Oh screen scratches too, so put on the skin protector that comes with the phone asap.
After playing with the htc incredible s/ desire s, i kinda liked the feel and built of the pair of HTCs. Espescially desire s, 3.7" aluminium back, real sleek industrial design, comes with front facing camera, android 2.3 + their new htc sense skin. Incredible s rotating home, search etc function button is kinda cool with a slightly bigger screen/display. I'd say take these choices for comparisons if your area offer.
I would either go with the NS or myTouch 4g if I was you. You can't go wrong with either phone. The myTouch 4g is much more user friendly if you are new to Android and it has a lot of features. The NS is more of an experimental phone that should/will get the latest Android updates before other Android devices. I recommend watching YouTube reviews to get an idea of which phone fits you the best.

+1 youtube is the best place to find reviews bc most tech sites for some reason think if its not an iphone well its not an iphone. For example iphone gets a 9 and ns gets an 8 then they do a follow up video and the ns beats the iphone, that doesn't make sense. Anyway I would recommend the mytouch 4g for a first time android phone as well. If you want ease of use and a good phone go with the mytouch if you want immediate updates and a good phone plus the samoled screen then go ns. Just my personal opinion.

It's a bit different though. They created the PS3 software which was not meant to be open while Android is created by someone else and meant to be open. Plus, Sony doesn't run the whole mobile division since Ericsson is still there (I think).

Hey guys, looking for some advice. I bought an arc s about 4 months ago to replace my dying x10i and I've been very happy with it, however it's starting to feel a bit dated and I don't know what would be a good upgrade. I have an excellent sim only contract so would like to buy a handset upfront, but I don't want to spend silly money.
I have installed ics and really like the experience, however the occasional lag is quite annoying. I think I just want a decent handset with more ram really, but I think a galaxy s2 would be equally dated in another 4 months.
I just bought an iPad 3 and really enjoy how nippy it is, I've been considering moving over to iPhone for my next phone..lout would have to wait and see what comes out this fall.
I dunno....maybe I just need to be patient but though I would check I'm not missing some super secret , perfect phone I haven't seen yet! Would. A Sony Xperia P be a good replacement for an arc s? Seems almost the same specs but double the ram... Thoughts?
Well as you are now forever locked into Apple as a single hardware supplier for your tablet, are you prepared to buy separate apps for your phone?
If so, then I would look at the Xperia S... If you aren't, then sell your iPad3, buy a decent Android tablet and a Xperia S.
My brother purchased an iphone4, i asked him if he new he would be restricted with apps, roms and hardware, he said yes its not a problem for him. Hes now wanting to be shot of it, every update destroys his jailbreak and it eats into his time putting it back again. In short he now wishes he hadn't gone down the apple route, although both he and i agree its a nice bit of kit just a bit restricted if you like fiddling and playing with software i guess. Each to their own i suppose. I think his main gripe is with the constant use of i tunes software for his films and movies. I rather like the look of that new hyabusa ? Very much Arc looking but slightly more updated specs, not sure it will be near top of the pops still when its launched here but that's never really bothered me as long as it does what i want it too alls good and rosey. More ram and dual core with a bigger screen will have to see how it sits in the hand. I picked up the SGS II last year and for me it didnt feel good in the hand so left it there i know my arc isnt bleeding edge far from it, butt eh screen is decent and it is comfortable, hope the hyabusa feels the same just hope it doesnt come with too high a price tag.
Well I'm quite happy with the stock ipad experience and quite happy to do the majority of my app purchases for gaming etc on that platform.
For my mobile, I don't play games or watch movies often... It's mostly Facebook, messaging, browsing etc. I know I could make do with a midrange phone for that but I like to be upto date and have a fast user experience. The xperia s feels a little too big when I've used it and I worry it will be the usual Sony affair and not be as fast as it should be with those specs.

I saw the reworked arc s, harabusa or however it's spelt heh. That would be perfect but no idea when I could get one or how much it will be

Well I don't have an Xperia S, but I have played with a entry level XPeria U, and it's Lightening fast, so much faster than my Xperia ARC S, which seems to be hobbled by too little RAM.
If you are a woman who has no time or need for Android development, who has no idea about hardware and wants something stable, buy your iPhone now and never look back... Android will not satisfy you, Xperia S, NXT whatnot ....

Errr okay, I'm not a woman. Thanks for that sexist comment though. I love tinkering with android and really don't see the point in having an iPad AND an iPhone, it's nice to have the best of both. All I'm concerned about is getting a decent upgrade which will last me.
How can it be that the Xperia U is faster than the S? That's not reassuring...often phones feel nippy when new and nothing installed. Or maybe the S will improve with ICS? I am considering getting an S as I could grab one for around £200

The remark is basically inspired from what I have seen with my wife... She's a technology illiterate and iPhone did the trick for her. She had a decent android phone which basically "never worked right", regardless of updates etc. IPhone is a dumbed down version of android with no possibility to customize, with pretty eye candy, sold at a premium price ... IPad is the big brother... You catch my drift ... I just can't believe you spent money on an iPad ... But that's just me and nothing personal ...

no problems fella. I just spent the last few hours unlocking my bootloader, changing the baseband, flashing a new kernel and loading arconium v2 onto my Arc S. Feeling pretty smug as I haven't done anything more than root a phone before... the phone is truely flying! Should last me another few months now.
Hurrah!

Sorry, typo, missed out the ARC bit..
The Xperia U feels REALLY fast compared to my ARC S
But then it's got a low-res display, so it's less for the GPU to drive, perhaps???? It's also Gingerbread not ICS....

I suggest you to try JJHIBRID ROM. I was about to sell my arc S but when I tried this rom, I decided it will be good for another half a year.

That was down right sexist. Don't judge the whole mankind by one example. I'm a girl and would never sell my soul to the devil (read: Apple). Love Linux (Mint) and Android, and I'm quite an average ROM and kernel flasher.

JJ's Hybrid ROM 3.2 was a fresh new beginning for my S-less arc. I'm not your average rich person who changes phones every 2 weeks, but I wouldn't even think about selling my arc if it wasn't for the super bad quality of the housing (cracks, etc.).

No it wasn't sexist... .... It is not only one example that runs blind behind the stupid iphone bandwagon... Did you miss the pink otter boxes being sold everywhere for that precious iphone? You are or seem to be an exception...

I see more Samsungs and HTCs, with a bit of Sony (Ericsson) here and there. Apple might aim the female buyers, but it's far from being woman's only phone-friend. And I see you're from the States - the weird part of the world full of parents who buy their 4 yo an iCrapper to play with. I've always found US Americans super weird people.

Truth be told I know plenty of guys, in military, flying attack helicopters, and drooling over iphones... Best they could do is jailbreak it and change the toolbar color... Whoop de doo... I played with my wife's 3gs... Simplified crap. I merely have Sony because all I own consumer electronics wise is Sony... Arc is an ok phone. But even with ion they are behind the power curve... If I were you I'd use that arc with their latest GB... Heck come up 250 bucks I can sell you my arc S. They fixed the Crack issue with arc S... Mine is brand new though

Am currently watching the HTC One announcement of their new phone. Have to say, looks pretty awesome, seriously considering cancelling my xz order and waiting for the HTC. I have had the HTC One and the HTC One X before, both have awesome screens, and when all the forum posts about the quality, or lack of quality, depending on which post your read, of the xz's screen. Hmmmm, decisions decisions.

TBH I was thinking the same not long ago but after hearing the new HTC has no memory card slot and only 32gb version. Im not interested atleast 64gb like one x+ would have changed my mind.

I'm sticking me the XZ, yes the HTC One looks nice etc but I change is due for me, this year will be the year for Sony I believe!
Sony z Pros
Better looking (i think)
Water/dust proof (not really something I need)
SD-card
Better dev support
less customized version of android, so possible faster roll out of new versions
HTC One pros
Newer SOC / faster/ less power
Better Screen
More internal memory
probably better speakers (not that i care)
infrared (not that i care)
As for the camera we don't know which will be better, and I don't really care as in the end all camera phones are rubbish
I'm not sure what to do, but looking at the hardware spec list the HTC is the one to get
looking at the software and design I favor the Z
Darn why could HTC just make a ****y phone
edit:
The presentation veld a bit like a teenage phone, that is holding me back as well

Like I said, to me it looks better, no sense in arguing about taste
HTC is famous for being late with the release of kernel source and when they do it is often in a non compilable state, Sony is quicker and better in this respect .
Saying things like "please" isn't an argument.

It looks better to you is cool but to say sony will roll out updates sooner and better Dev support is funny.
HTC has a large Dev community, LARGE. Mike 1986 is a known HTC guy, and we all know him. And its just one guy that I'm mentioning. This argument about release of kernel source is what you sony guys keep talking about, yet all previous Sony devices aren't relevant today.

There is no such thing as too much space in a multimedia capable device.

Who said too much space? If you cant live with 64 gig then get a laptop with 320 gig or an external hard drive and use Skype to make calls.

I guess it is where you after for most post xperia X10 devices you can get nightlies from CM. and the free xperia guys are doing excellent work to make that happen. You are able to get Android 4.2 on your arc (early 2011) possibly older devices as well, but I don't know as I don't have one. If you count the number of cooked roms it might be less than the one x but that doesn't say anything
Ok finally made my decision! HTC One great!!!!!!!! Non removeable battery? Ok rejected! Sticking with Xperia ZL now once and for all!

Unfortunately, and by all accounts the M7 leaves the Z far behind. A superior screen, Camera, Sound Quality and Loudness, not to mention build quality.
I don't see why anyone would purchase a Sony handset unless they are a fanboy, in which case it would be pointless arguing with an irrational person.
