New android girl....help - Nexus S General

Hi everyone, I'm really interested to get a new phone android phone. I have only 2 choices here which is
Nexus S
Xperia arc
don't know which is better. I'm tired of my phone. Please help me
Thanks

Haven't heard too much about the Xperia Arc but you can take a look at some of the reviews and compare them to the Nexus S and see which one you would like more:
Xperia Arc Review: http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/30/sony-ericsson-xperia-arc-review/
Nexus S Review: http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/10/nexus-s-review/
All that said, we liked the Arc and we think it has a lot to offer to the right sort of buyer. If you're obsessive about display technologies and vanilla Google software like we are, we'd advise looking at the tried and tested Nexus S. But if you just fancy an uncomplicated, big-screened phone to enjoy movies on during your daily commute, the Xperia Arc might just be your perfect candidate. It doesn't really lack anything on the feature front, but it's Sony Ericsson's execution and occasionally odd design choices that hold it back from being a triumph.

Pretty much sums it up.

Thats a tough decision is call volume on nexus s good ? How is battey and how the nfc works ? And what it does?

Call volume is fine. Battery is perfectly fine, one of the best (some people will debate about this.. but personally for me it has been really good).
NFC is still relatively new technology and it depends on your area. It's probably pretty pointless right now but it'll become big in the future.
Check with the store selling NS in Canada for its return policy. You can return it if you don't like it.

im running out of sony ericson after the X10.

Defiantly NS. Sony is crapware

I have the NS, and my buddy just bought the Arc 2 weeks ago. I must say go for NS. Arc gets real hot after gaming at the back part of the ear piece. The heat can be felt from the front as well, making calls uncomfortable after gaming. No front facing camera, which we should be expecting more and better softwares that uses it. Oh, the auto dimming is kinda weird, it makes the screen flickers the whole time, you can definitely notice it, my buddy and I thought it was a defect at first, but another buddy who bought the Arc also had the same thing going on.
Widgets/ sony skin is not bad if you prefer non stock look. Oh screen scratches too, so put on the skin protector that comes with the phone asap.
After playing with the htc incredible s/ desire s, i kinda liked the feel and built of the pair of HTCs. Espescially desire s, 3.7" aluminium back, real sleek industrial design, comes with front facing camera, android 2.3 + their new htc sense skin. Incredible s rotating home, search etc function button is kinda cool with a slightly bigger screen/display. I'd say take these choices for comparisons if your area offer.

I would either go with the NS or myTouch 4g if I was you. You can't go wrong with either phone. The myTouch 4g is much more user friendly if you are new to Android and it has a lot of features. The NS is more of an experimental phone that should/will get the latest Android updates before other Android devices. I recommend watching YouTube reviews to get an idea of which phone fits you the best.

They have unlocked bootloaders on their phones though (not from the start... you have to opt in). Seems a little bit weird with the whole fiasco on the PS3.

+1 youtube is the best place to find reviews bc most tech sites for some reason think if its not an iphone well its not an iphone. For example iphone gets a 9 and ns gets an 8 then they do a follow up video and the ns beats the iphone, that doesn't make sense. Anyway I would recommend the mytouch 4g for a first time android phone as well. If you want ease of use and a good phone go with the mytouch if you want immediate updates and a good phone plus the samoled screen then go ns. Just my personal opinion.

You guys are aware that the OP is from Vancouver, Canada? HTC Glacier (MyTouch4G) is not available outside the states. So this isn't an option.
http://www.rogers.com/web/link/wire...lan&productType=normal&N=52+11+4294948709+277
Out of that list. Nexus S is definitely the best from that lineup unless OP decides to change carriers.

after coming from the SE X10 i would never go back to SE that company brings you through one of the worlds finest emotional rollarcoasters you can ride on in terms of hate and love relationship haha

Nexus S hands down. Don't think twice.

Nexus S... I just came from the Motorola milestone, I seriously can not believe how good the Nexus is in comparison, motorola is supposed to have best signal quality, my Nexus beats it by at least 2x just in that area.

Thanks i am from canada on 28th I have to choose between arc or nexus s. Is ns easy to root and put rom on it?

It's a bit different though. They created the PS3 software which was not meant to be open while Android is created by someone else and meant to be open. Plus, Sony doesn't run the whole mobile division since Ericsson is still there (I think).

Yes. Just read the directions that are stickied. You might have to do a bit more work on a Mac, but it's still fairly easy.

Ah, I see. Its just bad on their part because people will find their brand make looked down upon.
They were responsible for taking down the emulator, psx4droid too.
And the ns is easiest to root. Not one click but this phone is meant to be rooted and modified.r

Nexus s to atrix

Hi guys I'm a girl that doesn't know to much about new phones. I'm receiving my nexus s on Tuesday. I'm wondering is it a good trade to atrix? My cousin he wants to trade it. My nexus will be brand new. So should i do it or no?

You'll be able to do little nerdy stuff on the atrix, so if rooting and having some fancy home screens considered enough then go for the atrix.
For me having 1 gb of memory + qHD res screen is a deal maker/breaker
Also, a doubt that the atrix's bootloader is gonna be locked forever anyway...

Are you really a girl? If a man asked this type of question, he would be ridiculed, but I suppose a girl wouldn't be, seeing as the majority of men here spend more time looking at their cell phone than the tits of the women sitting next to them on public transit.

Go for the Atrix you'll love it I'm sure. You said you'd like to root and have a little fun with it, you can hook up the Atrix to a nice sized flat screen tv via hdmi and turn it into a computer. The Nexus S is also kinda outdated tech already. The newest thing is the dual core and 1GB of ram that's more powerful than my netbook lol.
thats just my 2 cents

Agreed!
I like to tweak, and I have been more than happy with what I have been able to do on my 1st droid phone with the help of the XDA community so far.
I connected my phone to my flat screen in the living room last night to show the the Webtop and the family couldn't believe what they saw.
Get an Atrix, and in 5 years when nobody carries laptops anymore, and it's all done with cell phones, you can say you had the 1st one!
I have an atrix right now and was thinking of switching to the nexus s, don't want to lose my 3.5 g though

Both the phones have their own stand point.
Atrix on one hand does the deal breaking job with its Dual Core Processor/qHD Screen, but, it has MotoBlur and no Gingerbread in sight yet.
Nexus S on the other hand is Google's own, it has got all the Goodies except the Dual Core Processor/qHD Screen, but has Gingerbread on it already, has a SuperAMOLED Contour Display etc...
Holding two phones in your hands and comparing them side by side will do the trick. Go with what you like.
So far I love my Atrix. Haven't used NS yet, no comments about the performance, but if anyone wants to try different roms, NS is the one. There are a lots of Atrix users not liking the phone because of MotoBlur, which seems ok to me.
Personal Opinion : I like the way the bootloader is locked, so that you will have consistency on your phone, you don't have to back up your phone, messages, notes taken etc every now and then just because you are trying thousands of different ROMs available every weekend.
The Nexus S is clearly faster despite having inferior hardware, scrolling through homescreens and the app drawer is much faster on the nexus S. However, the atrix has the edge when you're actually opening those apps, albeit a small edge. The nexus S will receive more updates than the atrix and it's also already on a new version of the android OS.
However, i love my atrix. The fingerprint scanner (when it works) is pretty darn sweet and a great feature to have. I don't think dual core is even utilized yet, but i hope when it is the atrix will be even better than it already is. Oh, and the nexus S doesn't support 4G (?source). While the atrix doesn't have 4G yet, it should be coming out very soon.

HAHAHAHAH man i love this forum
I switched to a nexus s, I get the same quadrant scores if not higher than the atrix. The phone feels great works amazing and the roms only make it better. There is no lag and the camera kicks the crap out of the atrix. Battery life is phemominal and much better than I had on the atrix, plus it's much more vibrant with the samoled vs pentile.
I would get a nexus because at least for the moment it works better than the atrix.
Not trying to be a jerk, but as someone who has had both devices I can say nexus is much better.

I agree with you but I guess you are happy right now with NS because of the possibility to be able to flash any ROM anytime you want because of the Devs support. I wouldn't compare them both right now, as Atrix is not upgraded to Gingerbread yet. If the NS is still kicking Atrix's butt even after the upgrade, I am all in for this beast by Google.
I still love the stock Android experience, but Atrix's performance is not that bad. It does the job, it performs well. To me, except the VOIP voice support issue, everything else is much better than my N1 and iPhone 4. Battery life is way better than both, higher res screen is great, plus a Dual Core processor is a deal breaker... again, all of this is a personal preference.

I miss my Nexus s :(

I got the lg g2x (ugly phone)on release date.
Since i was eligiable for an upgrade i decided to go with the g2x after reading all the reviews and specs i gave my wife the NS
5 days after
I miss the screen
How the NS Feels on my hand
G2x is fast but i havent really notice nothing really impresive
2.2 and god knows when 2.3 update will arrive
G2x camera sucks
Speakers are to low
Two Pros: 4G and HDMI tv output
Thankfully i got a defective unit (screen bleeding) so i will be returning my g2x today.
Should i get a replament unit or get myself another Nexus S?

The same thing happened to me...
I returned G2x....back to Nexus S
If you already are disappointed and miss your NS, then why do you actually need our "permission" for this ? Just go for it ! If we would've said get another G2x instead of a new NS, would you have done this ? I, for one, wouldn't have. So yea man... just go for it, especially if you already know how the NS is and feels. Then you CAN'T go wrong.
Wait for sg2 or HTC sensation is what I think I would do just cuz dual core more future proof IMO I do like my nexus but Google isn't what its all cracked up to be IMO
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
The main reason I haven't got the G2X is because of its looks (Fugly little monster xD) but anyways, I did notice the camera was a lot better than the NS. Surprised to see you say it sucks lol. T-Mobile did say that 2.3 is not far away and also Cyanogen has been working on getting CM7 onto it which will definitely be 2.3.3
Anyways, I'm extremely happy with the Nexus S and besides a slightly faster phone with improved camera I don't see much of a reason to get the G2X.
I was going to make the jump to T-Mobile, and I held off a couple weeks to try the G2X. I was wary about service at my new place, because my AT&T didn't get any reception. I wanted to get something with UMA, and G2X seemed like the best phone with 4G and WiFi calling. Now that I've realized that I get perfect reception at my home, I don't need to stick with the G2X. After reception and battery issues with the LG, I'm welcoming the delivery of my Nexus S with open arms. I love the screens on my Focus and my old Captivate, so I'm really looking forward to Super AMOLED again.

I dunno about that. Play with an Atrix for a week and then get back to us
God knows I wont try that again.
I would go back to the sexy nexy Nexus-S is a bad ass device, who cares about dual core right now, I would wait until "Ice cream" update is out, for true dual core support, and then get the newest Android phone out at that time, which will probably be a dual core Nexus-3.0 that will be first phone with "Ice Cream" 3.1.
So get the Nexus-S now and have fun. And upgrade to the Nexus-3.0 next year.
Agreeing with the one saying that you don't need our permission. When I saw the G2X I fell in love, but I knew deep down that I would't love it as much as I love my Nexus S. You see, in the future there will be something similar to the Nexus S, the Galaxy S2. It will have better specs, and offer the same development ( or similar) that the Nexus S provides( unlocked boot loader). Trust me, keep your Nexus S and wait for that xD

What he said. But even with jailbreaking a device, customization is still very limited compared to a Android device with access to root / custom recovery.
@OP
I thought the G2X was extremely sexy, sure it looks a lot like the iPhone 4 but the edges were nice and for a 4inch device it felt amazing in the hand, I also loved how the speakers were not on the back, but the bottom(which makes it a great media experience).
Still, I would go with my NS.
Why didn't you guys did what I did got g2x when it came out and also kept my ns so I can switch between devices whenever I feel like. They're both nice phones I think when 2.3 comes out for g2x will be a lot better phone than it is.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Well the G2X just doesn't have the same look and feel as the Nexus S
you see the Nexus S looks like it was the only device on the planet to run stock Gingerbread, the device is all black, and so when you look at the status bar it blends in with the body of the device. The curved display just makes it look so distinct as well, and plus you can't forget about stock Android. Plus the specs are really not that noticeable. Yes that beast processor is better but the multi tasking experience would have been about the same.
I am currently on a sgs. Is it a good idea to change for a nexus s? Or should i wait for the sgs 2???

Not sure what to think about this. Seems quick?
no?
NS was released late last year
N1 was released early last year
it was bound to happen.. but at least NS will be the second next phone to get ICS
Nexus One was released in January 2010, Nexus S was released in December 2010, so this seems in line with Nexus release dates, Holiday Season every year.
Says no front "buttons". I wonder how the software buttons is going to work.

+1 they produce the best screens. I honestly don't know whats up with the hate with Samsung.
Who else is there?
LG: lol, we give stock and dont provide gingerbread updates (been almost a whole month). "stock" on carriers aren't really stock. 3rd choice.
Motorola: motoblur + bloat + locked bootloader
HTC: this is my second choice next to Samsung. even though they have said they're commited to not lock the bootloader anymore. i find it shady that they would even plan on locking the bootloader in the first place.
SE: not really producing any highend phones
Samsung: doesn't lock bootloader, easy to root etc. great hardware
my only complaint with Samsung are the plastic back covers, but I can deal with it after putting a case on.
people probably hate it because of TouchWiz. but if you don't use TouchWiz launcher (which many of us dont since we use ADW / LP) it's a great skin. it offers many features that are pretty nice.
The plastic battery cover angers me. It always creaks can't they make 2 version's. They can do it look at captivate now my screen creaks if I press the top part of screen it moves fml if they wanna compete with iPhone they need to step this up I really don't like HTC IMO there phones are garbage but damn least they put metal

Because Google simply provides the software. Not the hardware. If they go towards the direction of making the phone.. well, that doesn't fit their profile. They would be purchasing things from Samsung Electronics anyway and the profit stream would be way less.
And it doesn't matter if the company has already done the Nexus phone. Everything isn't built off the idea that it's fair.
Oh hey guys, Samsung & HTC already did the Nexus phones. Let's give Huawei a chance to make the next nexus phone!

FWIW, my ranking would be:
HTC: decent hardware that works. I can't abide Sense nor their tendency to lock down stuff, but on a Nexus that wouldn't matter. The safe choice.
LG: their Android phones are actually really nice, even if the product lineup is a bit strange. Specced by Google, built by LG? Oh yes, please.
Huawei (or some other less well-known brand): A Nexus could give the brand a boost, thus boosting competition in the long run.
Samsung: They always manage to have great spec sheets, but also there's always something that doesn't work right or at all. See GPS on the SGS1, sound on the SGS2, GPS on the Nexus S and compass/accelerometer on basically any Samsung-built Android phone. Also they have obvious quality control issues.
S-E: Well, why not? I don't think they'd even be interested, though, control freaks that they are.
Motorola: No, thank you.
No not LG. I have owned a couple of LG phones and never ever have i been satisfied. I just dont associate LG with anything good.
I hope not LG. The G2x has been a disaster to say the least, returns like crazy on them. Everyone I know that had one has returned it..
HTC, makes IMO the best quality phones. The sensation is awesome with solid hardware! They know what their doing

If HTC (or any OEM for that matter) made the next Nexus phone Google would required them to make them hackable, since it will likely be a dev phone. So you don't need to worry about signed bootloaders if HTC makes the next Nexus.
Also, there are never custom skins (such as Sense) on Nexus phones. The Nexus phones are designed to be hardware benchmarks for stock Android software.
Personally, I think HTC would be a great hardware manufacturer for the next Nexus device. I miss the solid build quality of my Nexus One. That being said, Samsung's AMOLED screen on the NS is outstanding.

No, not HTC again. My Nexus One already suffered from the dust issues and dead power button that I decided to just sell it after getting a replacement. HTC may make solid feeling builds but their phones almost always have build quality issues (the Sensation already has a dust issue).
If Samsung doesn't make it I will really miss the samoled screen. Unless LG decides to throw a retina busting display on it. makes you wonder what they mean by monster display, could just mean a 4.5 inch screen or a resolution that is unmatched.

I'm not worried about "signed bootloaders." HTC has already commited themselves to unlocking the bootloaders on future phones and current phones that feature them. I've been on Android since the G1, so I'm aware of all this.
Again.. skins, I'm aware of this. I was speaking in general because there has been forum threads around the NS forum where people are headed towards "normal" phones such as Galaxy S2 & Sensation.
The build quality of Samsung phones are just as fine. The only complaint is the plastic backing. Other than that, its build is extraordinary. I personally just want Samsung to make it because the displays they offer are exclusive to their company and its just breathtaking. It would also feature Super AMOLED Plus or even their upcoming display thats even better than SAMOLED+. But I doubt it'd be in the Nexus 3 unless it can be ready by then,

{Resolved...please close thread}[Suggestions Please] New phone for teenage daughter

Hello all,
My teenage daughter has been pestering for a blackberry, but I have managed to convince her an android phone is better
Now here is the point. I want a contract (About £20 -£25 a month max) on vodafone...what is the best to get.....
You know me, even though it will be my daughters I will be playing with it, rooting, flashing etc...
I can see xperia ray for £20.50 with tripple minutes on offer...but I am not to sure about other, non sony, makes...
I do like SE but would be happy to experiment...
Please list the suggestions and why I should go with it
I'm not sure if she'll be happy when you will be playing on her phone
But I think a XPERIA Ray is a good choice, it's goodlooking for girls.
Beside that, I know a few girls that have got a SGS2, and are absolutely loving it. They love the thin design of the phone the most. I'm not sure about the prices you could get the phone for in your country, but if it's possible you could ask her if she wants the SGS2.
It's just a advice without knowing exactly what she (or you) want to buy for her. What is the max. size the phone should be? Is there any limit? I would recommend to not get a phone with a screen bigger then 4.3inch, except for the Galaxy Nexus. But that one will be too expensive I guess Does she prefer any colour?
I'd be glad to help you, if you answer my two questions
Absolutely no other requirements....she wont mind me playing with it cos she knows I can get the good stuff on it for her and make it look good.
So, its what I can get her with the best possibility of me having a play with a new phone really...
I want her to have a decent camera (SE looks good here), good memory, fast (She likes games, like angry birds, cut the rope etc), good sound (So i dont have to replace her i(diot)pod), thats about it.....it will be hers, but I want to flash!!!!
Greg,arc s is a good choice mate =)

why....sell it to me like you needed the sale..
If you'd go for the camera, you should choose the XPERIA Ray in my opinion. It has great sensors. Games like that will run easily on this phone, BUT the rooting part. This phone doesn't have many development going on. I don't think it will be the right choice if you'd like to mod the phone...
Personally I'd not go for any HTC phone... Why? I think their designs look like some kind of old bald fridge lol!
The phones I'd recommend you, without being a fanboy are:
Samsung:
- SGS2
- SGS Plus (you should watch some reviews about the camera, I'm not sure about it...)
- Galaxy Nexus, if possible within the price limit
Sony:
- XPERIA Ray, just simple and beautiful...
- XPERIA Mini (Pro)?
- XPERIA Arc (S)? This one is big, but much easier to typ etc...
HTC:
This is the hardest part of all, you may like the design. The phone I'd recommend here is the HTC Sensation/HTC Sensation XE?
You could also get the Desire S? I personally would go for a Samsung/Sony Ericsson one.
Motorola:
None, had bad experiences with this brand... Same as with LG...
LG:
One of the worst manufacturers for mobile phones. Same as with Motorola. I think these brands are just focused money, and not any other thing.
I personally own the SGS2, and I must say, the camera is good, not the best... But it's for sure OK. I'm not aware of any other (maybe) good phone.
If you'd get a phone, you should mostly read reviews, and decide by yourself, before you blame anyone for giving your daughter (and you?) a bad phone.
Again, for modding take a Samsung or HTC device.
This is my advice, any additions from others are welcome.
A very good response.
Of course I will decide myself and not blame anyone here for advice
Thanks for telling me the ray doesnt have much development....
I will wait to see what others say
Forgot to tell you, try visiting with your daughter a local phone shop, like The Phone House or w/e. I don't life in your country, so I'm not aware of the stores out there. Visit a phone shop, ask for advice, maybe get a hands-on on some devices! In shops here, there are many show models of the newest smartphones.
Any question left? Feel free to ask

htc desire s good spec 1gb iterbal front camera and everyones favourite htc sense widgets £15.50 a month
HTC phones have awesome build quality actually, and really nice slcd displays.
Incredible s is a great phone, as is desire s... Both definitely very cheap and good choices.
Sgs2 is awesome of course.
Sensation.
Ray is actually nicely built, and has a great display. Could use more ram imo and the screen is too small for me. Nice phone though.
Did you see the HTC bliss? Its purple and made for girls..
There are a lot of choices, lots of sales this time of year too
Arc s has a good camera,iPhone 4s stole the specs from it.decent battery life,is a nice looking phone and easy to root etc. Similar to x10

not enough ram imo..
Also why not just buy the arc and overclock it yourself? It would be cheaper and literally the same thing.
The arc does suffer from poor build quality though, id get the ray or neo first actually.
Htc phones have bad build quality unless you get a top spec 1 but sense is ugly

nope, build quality is way better than plasticy se imo...
Sense is ugly? Lol
Way nicer than uxp with the dock bar that takes up half the screen lol
Also at least it's functional. Timescape is useless

sorry to threadjack, the rabid fanboyism just gets to me...
Good phones are good phones, regardless of "brand loyalty"..
I gave several responses, including se ones.
I like phones, not brand names. I never got this commercialist perspective where you back a brand like it's a favorite sports team or something.
I'm no fanboy Scooby, but yea I like Samsung,Sony for android, tried htc can't get into them dunno why
Oh and the arc s is actually cheaper than the arc so the overclocking thing youvsaid don't make sense mate

it isn't here :S it's pretty expensive!
I find HTC just uses metal and stuff, I can understand not liking sense but their build quality really is spectacular even if you find the designs bland..
I was pleasently surprised by sgs2, it's plasticy but can take a beating. I saw a few drop tests
Yea true,I want galaxy s2 next.arc is more than arc s here weird

do you mean size wise not great?
I saw one in the TELUS store and it looked amazing. It's smaller with a high resolution therefore high pixel density..
Reviews often praise the display

Samsung - inspired by nature.

You know how Samsung say they're inspired by nature? One thing's rather peculiar. I don't recall nature being bloated, ugly and sluggish. Or maybe they specifically mean stink bugs, ticks, weeds, etc.. Rather peculiar, don't you think?

This is the first and the last samsung phone, from now on i'm going with nexus.
My first Samsung phone, OEM wise. I had a Gnex before. This is, however, my very last Samsung device. EVER. I will never buy another Faildung device again. Deciding which phone will be my bext is hard, though, because I'm considering either the Xperia Z, HTC One or the next Nexus. Maybe not the HTC after all because I don't feel like messing with locked down bootloaders (unless they're nexii because it's a simple fastboot command to lock/unlock at your will)

I'm quite happy with my samsung. Had the S II before this S III and I guess I like the multitude of roms available. Sure, Samsung needs to get their Exynos sources out in the wild but even without them AOSP, Cyanogenmod and AOKP aren't that bad. Used those type of Roms for a while and never thought I would flash a Samsung based rom again... Until a few weeks ago. You could say there's alot of bloatware in the stock rom and you're absolutely right. On the other hand, some bloat is really "useful". For me personally I really like showing photos and videos directly on my TV without having to open a third party DLNA app. I like how easy it is to root and unroot everything back to stock. I like my external SD card, removable battery. I like how their phones feel in my hand. My girlfriend has an Xperia S and although I kinda like the design, it just doesn't feel right in the hand nor are the menu and back button easy to touch. I think the S4 with a Snapdragon or Exynos with sources will be the perfect phone. Gonna hold on to my S III for the time being or till I have one of my impulsive buying sprees.
Personally, I don't really "get" the Nature bit. Bit of a Marketing thing, differentiation and all that USP stuff.
I'm actually quite happy with the S3. I've a later one, mind. I've never had any funny reboots whatever firmware I used, never had any marks or cracks and the battery life on a Stock or Stock based ROM is rather good.
My primary likes are:
Good sound, great FM radio (I use this a lot due to a serious walking regime - I'm probably of a similar age to one of you other guys). The call quality and general signal sensitivity (GPS/FM/Cell/WiFi/BT) are really good. The notification LED is a real boon too - not having to wake the phone to see missed activity or see something come in during a meeting is fantastic.
The screen is truly oleophobic AND scratch-resistant - I hate screen protectors - they're hard to fit properly and look sh1t quickly.
They hold their value well if looked after cosmetically.
In a word then it is reliable - and eminently modifiable.
The things I dislike are:
The screen is just not bright enough outside even without direct sunlight. Hopelessly dim. This is the biggy for me - walking whilst outside and trying to read anything is just a joke.
The Samsung software is cobbled together, and feels so. Fortunately I remove most of it, but the core is still there... and their non-open source approach and lack of engagement with their development community is a "shame".
A soft gel case is a necessity or you will drop it. I never have. Touch wood.
The accessories supplied are 2nd rate. Belies the cost of the phone.
Replacing the screen and digitizer as a unit (the only real way to do it) is f.expensive (I did a mate's - £150)
I would buy another Samsung, I had the SGS2 and that was good for its time too. My wife's 2 yo Omnia 7 is also reliable and she has had no issues with that either. My eldest daughter's Xperia S has started losing pixels. My youngest daughter's HTC ONE S is totally stock and has randomly rebooted from new for no obvious reason. And this is the 4th Amazon BNIB replacement. It looks like crap too after a few weeks as the black finish is brittle.
Problem is, what else is there?
S4 - unknown quantity (might not have an FM Radio, might be Snapdragon or not), £600 and being an early adopter means beta tester.
HTC ONE - even if you can get hold of one, too early to tell if they are reliable or durable and the modding potential is not great.
Nexus 4 - No FM radio and LG not the world's best phone designer
Sony Z - good but odd in the hand and screen dim - massive development potential though thanks to Sony.
LG Optimus G - not readily available, too expensive, no FM radio and no development community and Billy Bland.
Note 2 - get real. S3 on acid with a silly stick, has its own identity crisis.
I would like the OPPO Find 5 - but not available and may not have an FM Radio or LED notification. Or development potential. I have an OPPO Blu-Ray player that is utterly fantastic. For those that remember, like a Nakamichi tape deck style quality.

With the current discussions going on in the general thread (eels, lube, etc.) I don't think many dare entering, or even stay after they've entered so I thought I'd liven the place up a bit.
