Im having trouble getting my phone to connect to EDGE. I am usually stuck on GPRS.
i called AT&T, and the %$#& told me that it was "fishy". i have a original AT&T EDGE phone that is also stuck on GPRS.
so i am just wondering. how many of you are having trouble with connecting to EDGE?
did you try switching to only GSM/2G mode? maybe you have really bad reception in your area?
I thought tmobile phones dont work on at&t 3g networks???

Where did the OP talk about 3G in his post?
I haven't had any problems one edge. Maybe it's the build you are using? I usually use SuperRam and haven't had any problems. If I try some of the other builds, I sometimes have a hard time connecting. I usually keep my phone (t9193) on edge to save battery. My kids have tmous HD2s on AT&T and haven't complained about any problems, maybe they just haven't noticed.
no problems here, Edge works fine, i wish the 3G would work. Do you pay full $30 data unlimited fee?

I have 2 HD2's running on ATT and I dont use data, but when sending mms, or when market for whatever reason connects to market it uses Edge, I've never seen it use anything else. I use Raf's 4.0 rom, just a guess, Radio maybe?

My SIM was cooked by my Nexus yesterday and had it replaced. The T-mobile guy I was talking to said that the 3G issue might be happening because I still had the G1 data plan and not the android data plan. I have no idea why this would matter. But since he changed that, and my SIM, I have had great 3G reception in places where I used to only get EDGE.
I thought I would share.
Also, if you want to test this just call up T-Mobile and ask them to switch you from the G1 data plan to the android connection. It doesn't cost a penny.

No. They had the G1 data plan first but then when they came out with T-Mobile's Visual Voicemail to get it to work you had to have the plan switched to the Android plan (same price).
Also, OP, tell us how did you fry your SIM?
funny you mention that, I opened a new acct with the mob and on my bill it says 'android plan' $0.00. i asked what that was and he said it was for 3G.....

wait, what??
This the second time, My g1 did it too. Don't think melted plastic or anything like that. I have a theory that the SIM sits right on top of the processor and other components in the phone. If you haven't noticed the phone can get really hot when charge (no my phone is not broken). I think it might be my charging habits. I run the battery to about 25-30% and then let it charge all night. So, that might have something to do with it.
No worries about your cool Nexus One because I honestly think this is a HTC hardware design problem. Also, I am sure these cheap little SIMs (insert bad Sim video game pun ) aren't meant to handle much heat.

This could possibly be a registration issue on the sim due to the flapping. The older model sims generally start to fail/suffer around 90k registrations (If you reg on a tower @ 3g, then switch to 2g, then back to 3g, that's 3 registrations right there).
The original G1 plan had $25/month for data + 400 texts, and $35/month for data + unlimited texts.
The Android plan has $25/month for data only, and $35/month for unlimited texts. You lose the 400 free texts, even though it's the same cost.
As for the Android plan having $0.00, I'm assuming it's from the Even More Plus bundle.
G1 Data plan is the same as the Android data plan. There is one with 400 texts on it that is a part of a bundle basically. Basically what I'm saying is all of the android data plans will work on all of the T-Mobile phones because they are the same...I still have my G1 data plan on my line and my 3G is flawless and I don't even live in a major market (Jacksonville, FL). I work for T-Mobile and know this to be true. Granted I always put the designated plan for each phone, but I'm almost 100% positive it doesn't make a difference. The cooked sim thing sounds shady too. Your G1 didn't "cook" your sim. Just my $0.02...
Get this though. I had my G1, SIM died about a month of use, Nexus One died after one week. Now my manager has a MT3G and bought it new about 4 months ago and had the same SIM for the past 6 years, died yesterday. He had a Wing before the MT3G, but his SIM never. I also have another co-worker with a G1, but no data plan. His SIM has been fine ever since he bought his G1 off some chick.
3G sucks in the Minneapolis area. I am always connecting and reconnecting, happened with my G1 too. Not to blame you or anything. I think the connect reconnect issue here in the Mpls/St. Paul area might have something to do with the dying SIM cards.

I've had my SIM since I joined T-mobile in January of 2003. I only replaced it because the paint on one side was chipping a little and I didn't want it to clog up my phone. Special care...? Just pop it in and leave it. Nothing special needed.

So I've been following this issue on Google's support website, and one of the rooted users over there is almost positive it's a software issue with 2.1. He actually flashed a port of 2.0.1. Although he got lots of FC's, obviously as 2.0.1 isn't made for the N1, he was getting excellent 3G connectivity, and constant speeds over 1500kbps!
Here's the link so you can read for yourself. The user's name is GNove.

Yes, you are correct.

You should be pulling better edge speeds if you're in a good reception area. I would install a different radio.
if it's syncing over edge at the same time you're trying to surf, you throughput will suffer greatly... especially on edge.

I have a unlocked tmob hd2, using it on ATT.
I get Edge ( as expected ) but that seems to be very slow....( probably this is the speed of edge)
Is there any specific radio version for using with ATT.
Any user experience is appreciated
I am using the tmobile hd2 on ATT and the speed seems fine to me. I am usually on wifi and really dont take notice of it. then again, how can you test the speed to know that you are getting true EDGE network speeds?
Also, I am using a custom ROM [Manila version touch x-treme 2.30.6.30],
with radio version 2.08.50.08_2
Bytheway, is it even possible to change the radio version? I would think that whats on the tmobile phone is specifically for their network.

Funny thing is my unlocked HD2's radio reception and quality is much better running on ATT compared to when I had the T-Mo sim chip in. I must have some really crappy towers around me or ATT just saturates the area or the radio wasn't tested very well on the T-Mo network. Regardless, this puppy runs great on ATT. ATT Edge is better than T-Mo Edge as well. Go figure.
When i checked the speed 3g vs edge on att its huge
download speed 1574 vs 124
Upload speed 331 vs 19
Edge really feels so slow, especially after used to 3g speeds...
Probably get telstra then
Edit to correct the speed no. s

Hmmm, my download speeds on Edge match or slightly exceed your downloads for 3g. My downloads for T-Mo averages less than 100kb. I do get better results not using the ATT proxy though.

Radios aren't assigned to carriers. What works on T-Mobile will work on ATT. If you are on ATT using an unlocked T-Mo HD2, no matter what radio you use, you will not get 3G - different bands.
Know that very well but was wondering which radio would give the best reception for edge

Do they really have a separate hardware for different bands? I doubt it, would be pretty expensive. If it's a software, I guess we can expect somebody to hack it and enable all HSDPA AT&T bands

It's actually for bands, so yes, there's separate hardware. Carriers do this to help instill customer loyalty and retention, among other things. There simply is no way to "hack it and enable all HSDPA AT&T bands"
SO If I have a TMO HD2 and have AT&T service - If I am a big internet user - I shouldn't bother with this phone? My Fuze will be faster? Or is it worth keeping the HD2 on At&T? I love the phone - the size, the screen, the features - ect... but If it is going to be a slower user experience for data I rather just sell it.

It just depends on 1) how available wifi is as an option for you, and 2) if the EDGE speeds (in your area) are acceptable for when you'd have to be on that (no wifi available). My guess is that they probably won't be, especially if by "internet use" you include a lot of webpages, and/or streaming of any kind.
HSDPA? I always have an H on my phone - can the TMO HD2 do HSDPA on AT&T? If so is that different? I know I am a noob when it comes to bands.

No, HSDPA is just a higher-speed 3G spec...it uses the same band ranges as regular 3G, so the same incompatibility still exists between AT&T and Tmo

Visit that site from your phone's browsers for a speed test. You'll probably get slightly different results using IE vs Opera, so try it several times to be confident in your results.
Avoid mobilespeedtest.com if you come across that site...their results are inconsistent and unreliable.
Just got my HD2 on Vodafone.
Signal is fine when the phone is stationary, but when I hold it.. it drops from 4 bars to either 1 or none.
I have:
- Disabled data/3g/hspda etc.
- Tried many different radio's up until 2.12.50.02_2 (which is an improvement but it still happens)
- Updated ROM to latest Energy Series.
Am I right in thinking the phone is faulty?... or is this common?

That is normal, our big heads are blocking the signal, but seriously, the "bars" are misleading, thanks to all those Cingular commercials , it really takes good signal quality to get a good connection, not good signal strength ...
So if the bars are dropping, and you cannot use the phone then that is a problem, but if the bars drop , and the phone/data/whatever works fine, then it is not really an issue ...
Just as an example, when I am at the college here, I have only one bar, but I am on hsdpa, and get like 2 meg of data, wish it was hsdpa+ but that is a diff story, and the phone works fine with only 1 bar, now inversely , people on VZ where I am at have 3 bars and their data is sooooo slow, and they drop calls ...
p.s. if it is dropping to none, check your area make sure they are not upgrading the towers, it is happening a lot and often here in the US in some areas ....

Yeah it's dropping to the point it loses signal, I try to call my mobile from my landline and I get the answering service.
What's really strange is, I just put a T-Mobile sim card in... and when I hold the phone, there's no bar dropping at all.
So in summary.
Vodafone Sim:
Stationary - 4 bars
Holding - drops to the point of no reception
T-Mobile Sim
Stationary - 4 bars
Holding - 4 bars

No it's not the US one.
So.. combination of hardware fault and weak signal?
wrong forum. this should be posted at the iphone4 forums.
the HD2 had to be one if the best reception phone and i am sure many agrees.
Just phoned up Vodafone to see if any problems, and they said there are no faults in the area at all. They said it was probably the handset but I explained that I had tried with a T-Mobile and Orange sim with no such problems.
They then said they'll send me out a new Vodafone sim card as they suspect that could be the issue. And that could take up to 5 working days... taking me out of my 7-day cancellation period, so naturally I said no thanks.
Going to head into my town center and pick up a Vodafone sim from the £1 shop... if I still have that problem I'm cancelling as I can find the same deal on Orange.
Question...
Has any one experienced a sim card being at fault for bad/dropping connections??? Seems complete rubbish to me, especially seeing as the sim is new...

Hey guys, I need some help.
I've been using my HD2 for two months now with little to no issue.
I've installed a couple of different Android ROMs with success, and enjoyed using them.
Recently I tried one that I didn't like, and decided to restore my phone to factory WinMO ROM.
Since then, I've had HORRIBLE data speeds...
I'm talking 50-60Kb/s where I used to get at LEAST 500Kb/s...
What on earth happened??
I'm currently on stock WinMO ROM with nothing flashed except for HSPL.
Can anyone help?

When I was on Android, I was using 2.15.50.14. That was the same one I had been using all along.
Makes no sense.
I actually did a Task29 and formatted the memory card, too. That should have erased everything.
Oddly enough, when I restored the phone to its original WinMO ROM, it had somehow remembered my Web2Go favorites.

You know, every time you change a build/ROM it may change the DNS settings. Have you double checked those? Most builds use a default Google DNS, but check your carrier, most likely T-Mobile. My thumbnail has those settings that can be found in the system/build.prop file; edit/add to look like mine.
I think I mentioned this to you already on a different thread, did I?

Yeah, but now I'm dealing with slow speeds in Windows Mobile. I'm not even in Android yet. I don't think I'm going to get fast data speeds in Android with your settings if I can't even get them in stock Windows Mobile. Or am I completely wrong?

What's your signal strength? Did you already mention that you're getting "H"?
I know you flashed the WMRom, but what Radio is it? Have you tried changing Radios after flashing stock Rom? I'm seeing a lot of different opinions on Roms from 2.10-2.15, but 2.10 seems to be the front-runner. I'll keep checking...
If you go to the settings tab > wireless controls > phone > band ; are network type and band frequency set on auto?
You can also change APN settings, check for alternate APN's. That's all I've found through Google and XDA...

Yeah, full signal and the "H".

I'm on 2.15.50.14. It's the one I was using before when I was getting decent speeds at 500kb/s. I reflashed it again after installing VBNRom and Android.

Is this in WinMO or Android? If you mean Android, then yes, I set it to GSM/WCDMA Auto.

I set my APN to match yours, and edited my build.prop to include your #DNS settings.
This is what I get for complaining that 500kb/s is not fast enough.
Maybe my pain can help you. I have been having the same terrible data speeds on both my HD2 and Mytouch Slide phones for almost a year. T-Mobile kept telling me to get new sim cards. That never helped for very long. Replaced all the phones and no change. My data slowed down to 50-60k just like yours. Dropped calls all over the place. Data stalling. T-Mobile gave up and said it was structural interference. I called BS. They even offered to cancel my contracts with no charge to me. I called in 2 days ago and spoke with someone in Tier 2 support who had a clue finally. She said I had old sims. I called BS. But she informed me that T-Mobile has new UICC SIMS that are designed for the 3.5G network they now run. Long story short I went to my local T-Mobile store and asked for 2 new UICC SIMS and that fixed the issue. I am now getting almost 4mbits down and 1.7mbits up on both lines with only 2 bars of signal in my house. No data stalls, no dropped calls, and the quality is better. Here is some info on wikipedia about the new UICC cards. They are basically a system on a chip and assist with the 3G communications stuff. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UICC
Here is a whole thread about it in the T-Mobile forum with pictures of old vs new sim towards the bottom. http://forums.t-mobile.com/t5/myTouch-4G/Updating-Sim-Card-Does-it-really-matter/m-p/546631

No worries, I was actually referring to WM on all accounts, since that's what you said that you were having a problem with. Searching through Google and XDA lead me to those questions and recommendations. The last post seems reasonable, I would check on that. Also, T-Mobile changed there DATA specs, and I saw that they lowered the bar to 5gs and a speed cap after, maybe you were pulling some speed doing something and they capped it? Don't know, but check on the SIM card deal, see what you got.

I checked... I have a new one. It has the "TM9073" on it.
Thanks, tho. THat was a good thought....
I actually got a text message this morning from T-Mobile:
"Free T-Mobile Message: Due to the amount of data you have used this billing cycle, your data speed will be slowed the remainder of the cycle."
So, that probably explains my 50-60kb/s speeds right now.
It still doesn't explain my typical 500kb/s, though...

It's probably because you hadn't reached the cap, yet. This is to prevent people to use phone as a modem and have internet basically for free, and not use their mobile broadban service. After the "billing cycle" it should go back up.
