Xoom vs. EEE Pad Transformer - Xoom General

Hi guys,
now I'm probably not gonna win a popularity contest posting this but after reviewing the technical specs of the transformer with those of the xoom, I'm a bit surprised - where's the catch?
I mean the transformer is gonna have a dock and as far as I have seen the same basic features the xoom has, only its lighter. And it costs less?!
Normally, when things appear to good to be true, they usually are...
So - where's the catch?
And, where's the hype??

I find the Asus tablet (the name is just silly, though; "eee pad" for real?) interesting as well, although of course the proof will be in the pudding. The dock looks nice, but if it's an additional $300 or so then I'll not be interested. And I've found that Asus can have really mixed build quality--some stuff is great, others not so much.
The thing that does interest me, though, is the IPS screen. If reviews come out that show it has great build quality (equal to the Xoom, which I consider excellent), it's available for a similar price ($599 or less for 32GB wifi-only), the dock is reasonably priced (say, $150 or less, which might be a stretch since it includes a battery), and it's available from my retailer of choice (Costco), then I might consider returning the Xoom and getting it instead.
The one huge caveat for me, though, is the custom skin Asus is putting on it. I do NOT want anything to slow down updates, and so I like that the Xoom is stock Honeycomb. I don't really know that I'd trust Asus to come out with timely updates...

The catch is that the Xoom is available now, and the Asus one isn't (unless you're in Taiwan). Ditto with any other HC tablet, which in all likelihood will be cheaper than the Xoom's current pricing. When the mass release comes, my bet is that the Xoom will get cheaper as well. Moto's CEO has said as much, although not explicitly for the Xoom.
BTW, if you are in the States and are looking at the Euro prices as a benchmark, be aware that the US dollar has been slipping as of late, and there is no guarantee that there'll be a 1:1 parity with the Euro pricing. Not sure about the Canucks, but generally they get the same prices as the Yanks'.

Also remember that most European countries have a VAT (Value Added Tax) that inflates prices by about 20%-25% depending on the country. Keep this in mind when looking at European prices and converting into USD.

If you own a Xoom now you are in a good position to get early updates and in one year the tablet market should be extremely competitive with great deals. Faster, lighter, thinner better screens, Android 4.0, you name it.
Quite often the hands on with some of these new tabs reveals a lot of cheap plastic, etc. The Xoom is extremely well built and I bet well be very desirable for quite some time.

Asus has only tablet i'm interested in & that's the Slate tablet..it costs like $1100.Plays 1080p video.Has a full Windows 7 operating system on a 12 inch tablet screen.Plus it has a I5 processor!!! But the all that said this thing has a battery life of only 3-4 hours & if you're watching a 1080p movie then you only get 2 hours . If it had a battery life of 7-8 hours i'd be all over it.So nothing can compare to the Xoom but that tablet

It is like the inverse of 2.2 on a tablet. As we now know it has to be built for a tablet from the ground up!

I have three windows based tablets: A Viliv X70, A Viliv S5 and an HP 2510US. All are running windows 7 and all are gathering dust.
Believe what the others on this forum are saying. Windows is an awful operating system for tablets. Its just painful to use. Even with a fast processor, somehow everything seems to bog down and crawl. Just scrolling a PDF file becomes a chore.
Stick to Windows for Laptops and Netbooks, and Android for tablets. You'll be much happier.
And if you think an Android convertible will give you the best of both worlds, I found that the trade-off in thickness and bulk with a convertible made it easier to just use my cell phone or a laptop then a convertible tablet. Becomes painful and awkward to hold after a while.
Edit: Might have to amend that last statement: just took a look at the Asus eee Pad transformer - seems the keyboard completely separates from the main tablet so you aren't forced to hold the added bulk. I guess, if one was willing to carry the keyboard around, I could see something like that being pretty useful.

The Asus 12'' Win7 slate has stylus (with pressure sensitivity!) - so it's no problem to click even small icons. On the other hand the battery live is very short and it has two fans. I was considering it but will probably buy Android device instead.

Yeah, I was semi interested till I saw 2 hour battery life under normal usage. I'll stick with my Xoom.

Guys,
I don't mean the Windows version of the ASUS tablet but the transformer.
It runs Honeycomb just like the Xoom and according to Facebook has a video playback duration of 9 hours.
Plus it's cheaper, lighter and has an IPS screen.

Have you put android on the duo to dual boot? If so how is it in comparison to IDK let's say the xoom? lol

I did run a x86 version of android on it, it sucked. hahaha Now I just basically use it to take to school or work and dual boot win 7 and ubuntu although with the duo I've been using it more for ubuntu instead of windows. If it did come anywhere close I wouldnt have gone out and gotten a xoom

CES 2011 tablets

Is it me or the tablets at the CES today were nothing but crap! All this great hardware but had some serious OS issues, or lack there of.
Even the one from Vizio was lagging/skipping frame rates soooo badly. The Adam was EXTREMELY skipping frame rates, and was had crap touch response, and can't see how feasible playing games on that thing because of the way it's designed. Only the PlayBook seems to be as smooth as a baby's bottom, but it's not Android unfortunately.
My SGT pwns them all, at the same time! hah. What are your thoughts so far?
If they would have been able to ship last summer, no doubt I'd have an Adam. I'd really love the Pixel Qi screen and near stock Android, but they seemed to go further and further with their customization there, and it just took too long and I got the Tab. I'm still hoping next year brings 15-19" slates/tablets. I'd even consider a Win 8 slate in that form factor, but Ubuntu/other Linux would be best there as a full laptop replacement.

15 and 19 inch tablets?? What are you going to do with those, literally surf on them???
Sent from my Dell Streak using Tapatalk
I think that size really takes away from the portability of the tablet
I dunno, I have been working my tab for about a month. I have a GalaxyS and the Tab and since flashing the firmware to get phone support, I have left my Galaxy S in a desk drawer. I swap sim cards out if I want to carry something smaller than the Tab. None of the tablets announced have talked about voice support. I think the Vizio unit with infrared is interesting but I remember having this on a palm pilot and didnt use it much as a remote.
I don't see how any of these new units are doing anything different until Gingerbread/3.0 or whatever we are calling it is gold.
I like USB ports but what I am going to do with those? Print? I can already print on the tab. What we need is less hardware improvement and more software improvement - something that is missing from the CES announcements. You can customize a turd any way you want but if it's still a turd it's going to stink.

Replace a laptop. Something that big without the need for the keyboard would be a perfect replacement. With Swype, BlindType and others, I don't need to bother with a full keyboard, and with a tablet, there's no need for a wireless mouse or a fidgety touch pad. Weight-wise, I'm fine with 17" laptop in a bag now, but with the battery life their getting on 10" tabs, I can see something with solid state drive of some kind being a full and complete laptop replacement not requiring me to carry around a brick or open and close it. It is the eventual replacement for the laptop, no doubt. If you really lust for a physical keyboard: Bluetooth, and it'd still be less to lug around than a current laptop bag with a brick, mouse and keyboard. I just hope it's by next year. www.kno.com is already taking pre-orders for a dual screen 14" tablet. We have the tech already to make heavy passive-screen folding laptops as ancient as rotary dialing phones.
My ideal two gadget life would be something around the size of the tab, maybe about half the trim around the screen, as phone/portable tablet, and the big one for actual work and real computing that I use my laptop for now. No phone; just those two sizes.
The only one that looked good was the xoom. And honestly I think the main thing is the software that is made for a tablet. If we could get that for our tabs then I don't see the point of going anywhere.

Something just makes me uneasy about Motorola android products...not trying to put anybody down if you've got a Motorola Android device, but the quality just isn't there. At least for me it isn't. They have a cheap feel to them and lets not even get into Motoblur....awful. I dont see the Xoom being that successful

There's a LOT of untapped potential in the Hummingbird SoC. GPU wise, it's pretty close to a dead heat with a Tegra 250. Seriously.
I am so hoping you are right on that one. I paid full retail 15 days too early to get the 100 refund so I am not the happiest about that. However honestly I love the size more than I thought I would. It just fits perfectly so I don't know if the tablets that are being announced would be a little too big after using my galaxy tab?

I have to agree. I was hoping for a new 7" tab with dual cores and comparable resolution to the tab. 10" tablet is useless on the go and if I'm at home, what's wrong with using a laptop?
I was really disappointed by the Streak 7. I can't even believe Dell has the nerve to introduce such a ****ty product.
Kind of funny how some are in a mad rush to get something bigger while I just junked the iPad in favor of a Galaxy Tab because it's so much smaller and lighter. That it plays Flash video so well and has back and front cameras....oh, and is available on a carrier that doesn't suck at my house...is pretty much a middle finger aimed squarely at Mr Jobs. And if anyone deserves the middle finger, it's Mr Jobs.
Well samsung just announced a new galaxy tab with 1.2 ghz humming bird and 4g lte connectivity.
looks exactly the same but new insides.
Also only for verizon.
Also 5 mp camera and 1.3 mp front facing.
but will it make calls?

iPad UI is slightly smoother than honeycomb (HC is still really nice though, haven't had choppiness or lag so far) but widgets will always win over plain icons on my iPad.
The software loaded on the E3T (myLibrary, myZine, myNet, @Vibe, Polaris Office) work really well and since I read a lot it's quite handy. The slight modification to the UI (custom home/back/recent tasks/menu) icons are an improvement and any other changes they've made have all been for the better.
Yes the iPad has more apps, but I haven't had that much need for that many apps since most things you'll do are already included and mostly work well.
The screen is on par with my iPad 2, and better resolution/dpi, besides reading on 16:10 in portrait is a lot nicer than 4:3, and a lot nicer for watching shows/movies opposed to 4:3.

i agree with this. Having extra cables and chargers is really nice. also if you already bought apps on itunes then you wouldnt have to pay for them again on android.
I ordered both iPad and Tf. Keeping tf. In time both honeycomb and apps will catch up. Very quickly.
Does iTunes run on Linux?
I rest my case.
Itunes will not run naively on linux. You might get the windows version running under wine or in an virtual machine.
I have a new policy. I do not buy a product that has no Linux support.
To play devil's advocate ... the iPad 2 has a smoother UI than the Transformer (which will hopefully change soon) and if you download an app, it will likely work, even if it's in a small iPhone-esque window. Some Android phone apps will not work in Honeycomb. There's also a buttload of accessories, more developer support for apps, and a better chance that your tablet will be upgraded to the latest iOS without having to rely on forces outside the manufacturer.
But I'd still never own one. Glorified app launcher, I don't think it's a true tablet like the Honeycomb tabs. I'd get bored pretty quickly. But for someone who wants that experience (say, my parents, my sister, a coworker who finds Android confusing), I have no problem recommending it.

I already had an iPhone and this was the deciding factor in me returning the Asus for an ipad2.
My father uses an iPad (3g). I think it is a very nice piece of technology, but I prefer the Transformer because it has the keyboard add-on.
I currently use a Macbook Pro and it is too heavy to take with me to classes. I plan on using the tablet + keyboard combo for university. It is light-weight and the memory is expandable.

Remember to get drag and drop on OSX you need to get android file manager from the android website.
There is literally a world of reasons, but this is my main one...
The ipad runs a cell phone operating system while ASUS runs an actual tablet OS. While honeycomb isn't quite as smooth as ios when the next few updates arrive it will be far superior. We have an OS specified for tablets while the ipad has the same old crap on it... It is literally just a big iphone.

Let's not be inaccurate here to a fault. The iPad does not run a "cell phone operating system". There are slight differences between iOS for iPhones/iPod touch and iPad. Just because they look alike or are similar does not mean that iPads run the exact same operating system as an iPhone and iPod Touch. Last i checked, you couldn't load iPhone OS on an iPad or vice versa.
One can say that Android tablets are big versions of android phones as well. Just like there are apps that run on iPads only, there are apps that run on HC tablets only.
I own the iPad2 16GB WIFI (my very first apple product) ... been a pro-Linux / Anti-MSFT / Anti-AAPL guy for a long time. Given that ... take the next few bullets FWIW ..
CONS -
- The iPad2 's dependence on iTunes-PC tether
- The lack of ext. SD support .. a major downer for someone with a 16gb tablet.
- expensive accessories
- not hackable at all (as of now)
- yet another Apple product worshipped by the clan.
PROS -
- The display is gorgeous (videos and pictures look stunning). Screen rotations are quick and fast.
- Most websites that require flash ... interestingly, also have free iPad apps that play video just fine (i.e. CNN / HBO / CBS / ABC etc. etc. etc.)
- The battery truly runs 10+ hrs (even with moderate to heavy use)
- The battery truly does not run out when the unit is on standby. I close the smart cover in the night at (say) 50% ... the next day morning its at 49% ... and during the night it has also downloaded my emails (i.e. wifi stays on).
- Apps rarely bog down the iPad.
- Never had any lockups or reboots.
MOST IMPORTANT PROS
- Availability of apps. Its shocking how many native iPad apps there are. Almost every well-known company has an app on the iPad. TIVO has an app on the iPad. I doubt TIVO has the necessary resources to build a similar one for the Android. Also ... the iPad and the iPad2 have identical aspect ratios and screen resolutions making life really easy for software developers. Android Tablets will come in all flavors and aspect ratios causing major headaches for developers. To make matters difficult, schools and other institutions are buying iPads ... make it a more lucrative option for developers.
I am waiting for the Transformer to ship (on pre-order status @ Amazon and Target). Its going to be interesting.

Transformer versus HTC Flyer

I am contemplating selling my transformer in order to get the HTC Flyer. I like the form factor and the ever note integration. I know the flyer is 1.5ghz single core but I've read where this is almost equal to the dual core for the Transformer, though mine is ocd to 1.4ghz. Cameras are about equal, but I might be prone to use the flyers camera more as it is more portable. I can read reviews and watch YouTube vids all I want. Right now I am on Prime ROM. I qm a teacher so this is more for note taking and movies books and games and the occasional notes and GPS. I'm still looking for that all in one device.
I guess if I really anted it all minus the camera quality I'd get the ipad 2. But next year the 3 will be out and the price is pretty high and its almost too easy.
Thanks for looking.

If I'm not mistaken, the HTC Flyer doesn't even run Android Honeycomb. Not sure why you'd want to go from a 3.2.1 device to a 2.3+ device.
But we're under the assumption that ICS will be ported to any device that has active devs, right? In any case... I think taking notes gets harder and harder when you go toward a smaller surface area.
True, but because of the pen that is made specifically for it, note taking is supposed to be easy. Then I read on the forums for the Flyer that due to flooding or something in Taiwan that the Flyer is hard to get. I was playing with the demo at BB last night. Didn't even think to as about if there were any in stock lol.

Hmm, didn't know about the stylus, I want to look at it! haha
I thought long and hard about this before I made my TF purchase decision.
I honestly see these devices as being in totally separate categories.
The portability and 3G capability of the Flyer is an awesome bonus for content consumption on the go - like public transport and sitting at the airport etc.
The screen size and dock features of the TF make it a potent all rounder but it's more of an at home in bed or on the couch device.
Personally I find the world that is opened up by the dock (think external hard disk, mouse, keyboard etc) and the dual core (mines OC at 1.6) made it a compellign choice for me.
For most people I don't think these are competing products - depending on your use cases it's likely one wouldn't even be a consideration and the other would be ideal.
Looked at the Flyer when I was looking for a 7" tab. Nice unit. But what broke the deal for the Flyer is 2.3 GB with iffy upgrade. I've read (take with a grain of salt here) that HTC is "maybe" getting out of tablets (a la HP). The Flyer has been on 2.3GB for a loooooong time so ICS, IMO, might be even further down the road (if at all). Add in the price of the pen (yes, it is sold separately) and I walked away. Tried the Acer A100. Rotten screen (non-IPS) viewing, weak battery life broke the deal there. KF? Nope. Want a real tablet. NT? Bootloader remains locked so far but still better than the KF. Got the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus and most pleased.

As a Asus Transformer user and HTC Flyer user, HTC Flyer is more stable than Transformer because well, Android Gingerbread/Froyo is more stable than Honeycomb.
I use HTC Flyer more now because I can bring it out. The form factor is very good. Quality built like iPad without creaking like Transformer.

Three tablets? Wow, that's amazing. Do you have a use for all of them, or do any collect dust or get used more infrequently/as a hobbyist toy?

Heck. I've seen people with more toys than I!
Actually the only device that doesn't get daily use is the NC Each device has a primary purpose (that can be interchangable at times) but honestly much depends on what I need to do. For example, for Grand Rounds the GTab7+ works better as it's smaller. On desk the TF works well, with the transportability if need be. As all (except the NC) run same HC version my business apps all port well (reference/DDX/Pharmacy/etc). So, yeah only the NC is seeing less use. But fully charged and ready if needed!
I have nook color, flyer, and now transformer.
I use flyer as a more portable tablet in that i, take it on the metro for reading books and use it at work for taking notes. I find the pen to be fantastic.
Transformer is a better form factor for surfing the web (anything more than a quick check of some wikipedia page here or there). It stays at home mostly. If I take a trip somewhere, I'll bring it for movies and such, but I find it a bit large to whip out while traveling (metro, car, plane).
Nook color I gave to my fiancee, but she seems to like the transformer better (maybe size does matter?). Honestly I kinda saw the flyer as an upgraded nook color (nc doesn't have usable bluetooth, cameras, microphones, or HDMI out).
As for honeycomb upgrade for the flyer... There have been a number of increasingly more complete honeycomb builds leaked for the flyer, with the latest being leaked within the last month. This leads me to believe that the official honeycomb upgrade isn't too far off.
Not that anyone really cares, but I've also got an EVO 4G (quite honestly, still a great device), and the original G1.
@OP: did you decide what to do?
Thank for all the informative responses. I believe I am going to wait a bit longer and look at the TF Prime or the HTC Flyer when more stock arrives. I like to play games on my tablet so Kal El has me interested. The Flyer will lack here but still like its portability. I could be like the good Doc and get both but that's overkill for me. I'm either at home or in the classroom or at my campground site so I guess the bigger form factor not as big of a deal.

Your next tablet.???

So i was wondering if any of you fellow a500 owners decide to upgrade this year what tablet it might be...
I love my a500 but i will be upgrading this year as i love new tech toys
Currently i see 4 potential suitors. They are...
Obviously the Acer a510 10" quad core t3 ics tablet
Acer a700 HD 10" t3 ics tablet
Asus prime HD (better front camera and higher res screen than current prime)
Finally the only dual core device the Samsung note 10.1 just because i own the phone and know the potential and unique features this offers! (Better for business, email, notes etc... not as good for games as t3)
Please share your thoughts .

im really thinking of getting acers new 7 inch one when it comes out, the ten is good, but bringing it with me a seven inch might be best.
BUt then agian I love my full sized usb port
The Asus memo looks nice as well. T3 ips and 250 bucks!

I don't think I will be buying another tablet for years now. I use my A500 so rarely, and I want to be able to slap it in a dock and actually be able to use it for desktop-computing, something that none of the current tablets offer. Tablets are horrible for gaming, so even the improved performance doesn't mean anything to me.

yeah i really wish all the big companies would add the usb controller parts into their games, I look at some of gameloft games and go that looks good, by a fps with touch controls never work well.
Onlive with the xbox controller I got is really nice, granted if your near a router
I will buy a windows 8 tablet.
I have an A501 right now but my next one is going to open source, whether it is a linux or android it will have an open source operating system or at least be capable of it.
I have been shopping in China for days, looking for the perfect Tablet...
Must be open source or capable (unlocked bootloader & source available)
10 inch capacitive screen
integrated 3g and phone capable
USB host
HDMI with docking
8hr battery
Wifi & full bluetooth capable (HSP HFP SPP, HID)
I'm only using mine for reading books, some web browsing and web demoing to clients. I don't really have much need for it otherwise, but a Windows 8 tablet I would certainly buy when it's out.
Buying another android tablet does not make any sense, to me at least.
Android is great and all, it has good apps too.
Another Android tablet with better specs? It is still android!!!!!! you will rarely notice the difference between Tegra2 and 3.. ( Unless you download some games only to see a difference).
I'm not interested in Apple's iPad either, not at all.
So the next tablet? Windows 8. Most apps will not be optimized for touch, even Office apps, but does it matter? Well, using those apps won't be as easy as using Android apps, but they can actually replace a laptop!!!!!!
So, the next time I'm in the market for a laptop, not a tablet, I am going to buy a Windows 8 tab that has a dis-connectable keyboard. Thank you.
Thanks for the feedback you all have valid points. I was only stating t3 has better game performance and support over the exynos in the Samsung. Personally i don't game alot. But android tablet games are coming along way fast!
For me the reason for upgrading is in a few months ill be fixing my a500 in my truck as a stereo headunit media center. So I'm going to need /want something new.
Windows 8 might be an option but haven't look into it much. Still won't be released till end if year correct?

WOW Jumping ahead way to soon
I do not know of one single app that will not run on the Iconia a500. Its just coming up on a year old 450.00 device . i will be using mine for a few more years atleast..
I really still enjoy my iconia and with ICS its even better.
I don't plan on upgrading from my iconia until jelly bean is mainstream. By then I think the tegra 2 will start to feel older and slower, and my battery won't have as good of a charge.
And keep in mind ICS isn't mainstream yet
I'm looking at the a700... a real possibility

Europe pricing is like 749 for 16 gb and just under 1000 for 64gb. Crazy

If I were to replace my A501 I'd probably go for the Asus Padfone, that way I could replace my Samsung Galaxy S as well.

I'll start by saying that I really do love Android and despite what anyone says, I do think it's only getting better and is definitely going places.
That being said, I believe my next tablet may just be a Windows 8 tablet...that is of course if they are in the same or a similar price range as Android tablets. It won't be this year. Well, never say never but I highly doubt it will be this year. More than likely next Summer is when I'll be looking.
Currently my A500 does what I want it to, I use it almost daily for everything and I'm very happy with it. I believe that similarly, I would use my Windows 8 tablet in this way with an added bonus of having it be synergistic with my desktop and notebook. That's really the only reason.
I would give it a bit of time - there are apps on Android that aren't currently made for Windows that I want to use and I'd like to see how popular the Windows Store gets with these apps and if they will be free or the right price. I'd also have to see how fluid the OS is on whatever tablet I was interested in. If everything meshes well and I like what I see/use then I will def. be going to Windows 8.
I'll get another Android tablet IF Windows 8 Tablet isn't the experience I expect it to be...again, more than likely sometime next year. Right now I'm quite happy with the A500. The top requirement will be (once bitten, twice shy) that it sources updates directly from/through Google and isn't skinned - so likely some kind of Nexus Tablet, lol.
There's nothing the A500 can't do right now. With our talented Devs bringing us ICS, it makes it even better. All the apps work as they should and all functions work as they should or better. I don't see myself upgrading until the next series of Iconia's get released.
That being said, if HTC smartens up and brings out a 10" tablet with an unlocked bootloader and S-OFF, I may have to snap that up. Abit of an HTC Fanboy at heart =p
I ordered the new iPad on March, 11. I will get it on 5th April.
Thats my next tablet.
I'm sure you have been forced. We all feel very sorry with you
my tablet is only for internet surfing. The display and the battery are better than any android device.
If there are Android tablets in future with stock android (because of fast updates without custom roms), 8h battery time while surfing or watch a movie and 1080P resolution or higher I could sell the iPad and get this new android tablet. But in nearer future I don't think, that this will happen.
I forgot: in germany sky go app ins only avaible Form ios and I want Tor use this

New tablets from Asus

Asus is just about to release two new products, the "new Asus Transformer Pad" and the Fonepad 7.
I was surprised to see the Transformer using a Tegra chip, since it isn't a big deal against its competitor. Also, the camera has a lower resolution. The screen is really cool and the other props are great too. I think for now I'll stick with my TF300T. It still works without issues and Android 4.3 is rocking on here. But the Fonepad 7 have my attention. I wonder how does it go against the Nexus 7 with 3G.
What do you guys think?

The new transformer (TF701T) is the successor to the TF700 (not the TF300). Looks like a substantial improvement in specs, and Tegra 4 is (supposed to be) considerably better than Tegra 3, multiple times faster both in CPU and GPU performance. But unknown how it fairs against the best of the current competition. Unfortunately, the Tegra 4 GPU is a little behind the times in terms of API support (still at DX 9 level, OpenGL ES 2), the Tegra 5 will fix that next year. This may, or may not, be important with some games and modern graphics-reliant apps.
I am not replacing my TF300 anytime soon either. It serves me fine still. Holding on until 2014...
YOU FORGOT THE ASUS BOOK TRIO!!!!!
Well I'm tempted because of the higher resolution and the better ppi but not sure just yet. Wanted to buy the new S Galaxy also so I'm taking a wait and see approach here.
Having said that, I would never pay more than 500 euro for my tablet the Trio while nice will for sure be too expensive. Not a big fan of Windows 8 and the ehole swipe gesture thing.
I will go with tf 701 for android or the asus taichi if you like windows.

The asus Trio isnt a tablet, so putting a 500 euro price on tablets doesnt make sense. Its an actual touch screen laptop, with an i7, that also just happens to have android. I for one cant wait. If its under 1000 USD Ill likely pick it up I love the look / design ( although it would likely never be undocked ).

I understand where you are coming from, but paying around 1000 USD for a small screen and underpowered ultrabook doesn't make sense to me, I know it will run smoothly and featuring an i7 is impressive but: the battery-life will also be a big factor.
I know it may be a personal preference but I'd rather have a 500 USD tablet and a 700 USD ultrabook.

Not to pick on you, but I hardly consider anything with an i7 underpowered. The intel atom processor only powers the android system. The battery life specs are listed for each on their own. When combined, they also add power to whichever system is on. Ive seen speculation of 16/18 hrs docked on the android side, and 7-10 hours running windows. This device has more much more power and features than a macbook air. Any 4th generation i7 touchscreen laptop wont be cheap my friend.
Personally I love my tf300t and replaced my horrible asus prime with it. I had an i7 macbook pro but a friend needed something decent, and I wasnt using it since the asus became my primary device ( aside from my phone...a note 2 ). I also have a custom built i7 3770k / 32gb ram desktop at home hooked up to 2 - 26" samsung screens. Thats where the bulk of my work takes place whem im home.
There are always times while im out that I wish I had a windows device with me for microsoft specific tasks. Since I always have my asus with me. Swapping the tf300 out for something like the trio would make perfect sense. I would still have the horsepower to edit / render video and run photoshop on the fly and still not have to be plugged in all day as Android would be the main system in use. Also its a pain going to the desktop in the basement anytime I needed to use odin / fastboot / adb, or need to do something light but in a hurry.
You are absolutely correct tho, its all a matter of personal opinion.

I called it underpowered compared to "only" ultra-books of the new generation. Since I will never use a laptop, ultrabook without a DVD or Blueray option the Macbook was never of any interest for me. I've had a Vaio for a few years, but the battery life sucked (2 hours!)
I am not going to judge the Trio before I've tested it, but I am just a bit skeptical if Asus or any manufacturer at this point can deliver the promised Windows & Android experience at a reasonable price with enough power. Sure, the specs and datasheets are looking fine but we'll see.
Feeling with you I know especially when it comes down to doing office stuff I'd love to have a real desktop instead of my tablet to work on.
For now I am very excited for the TF 701 and taking a wait and see approach with the Trio.
// Edit //
Forgot to mention, that running Windows 8 will also enable you to dualboot Linux Mint, Ubuntu so that's a great choice I didn't think off.
I added the more tabs to the list

I really like some of the ideas Asus has and how they are putting it together, been a fan of this company since building my first custom PC their mainboards are just the best bar none by far.
Would be awesome, if Asus could find a way to make the battery removable and expand the RAM.
for me too
