iPad UI is slightly smoother than honeycomb (HC is still really nice though, haven't had choppiness or lag so far) but widgets will always win over plain icons on my iPad.
The software loaded on the E3T (myLibrary, myZine, myNet, @Vibe, Polaris Office) work really well and since I read a lot it's quite handy. The slight modification to the UI (custom home/back/recent tasks/menu) icons are an improvement and any other changes they've made have all been for the better.
Yes the iPad has more apps, but I haven't had that much need for that many apps since most things you'll do are already included and mostly work well.
The screen is on par with my iPad 2, and better resolution/dpi, besides reading on 16:10 in portrait is a lot nicer than 4:3, and a lot nicer for watching shows/movies opposed to 4:3.

After having a discussion with an iFanboy the other night, the only excuse we could come up with for getting an iPad over the TF is if you already have all apple products for the integration. In short... get the Transformer.

i agree with this. Having extra cables and chargers is really nice. also if you already bought apps on itunes then you wouldnt have to pay for them again on android.
I ordered both iPad and Tf. Keeping tf. In time both honeycomb and apps will catch up. Very quickly.
Does iTunes run on Linux?

Itunes will not run naively on linux. You might get the windows version running under wine or in an virtual machine.
I have a new policy. I do not buy a product that has no Linux support.
To play devil's advocate ... the iPad 2 has a smoother UI than the Transformer (which will hopefully change soon) and if you download an app, it will likely work, even if it's in a small iPhone-esque window. Some Android phone apps will not work in Honeycomb. There's also a buttload of accessories, more developer support for apps, and a better chance that your tablet will be upgraded to the latest iOS without having to rely on forces outside the manufacturer.
But I'd still never own one. Glorified app launcher, I don't think it's a true tablet like the Honeycomb tabs. I'd get bored pretty quickly. But for someone who wants that experience (say, my parents, my sister, a coworker who finds Android confusing), I have no problem recommending it.

I already had an iPhone and this was the deciding factor in me returning the Asus for an ipad2.
My father uses an iPad (3g). I think it is a very nice piece of technology, but I prefer the Transformer because it has the keyboard add-on.
I currently use a Macbook Pro and it is too heavy to take with me to classes. I plan on using the tablet + keyboard combo for university. It is light-weight and the memory is expandable.

Remember to get drag and drop on OSX you need to get android file manager from the android website.
There is literally a world of reasons, but this is my main one...
The ipad runs a cell phone operating system while ASUS runs an actual tablet OS. While honeycomb isn't quite as smooth as ios when the next few updates arrive it will be far superior. We have an OS specified for tablets while the ipad has the same old crap on it... It is literally just a big iphone.

Let's not be inaccurate here to a fault. The iPad does not run a "cell phone operating system". There are slight differences between iOS for iPhones/iPod touch and iPad. Just because they look alike or are similar does not mean that iPads run the exact same operating system as an iPhone and iPod Touch. Last i checked, you couldn't load iPhone OS on an iPad or vice versa.
One can say that Android tablets are big versions of android phones as well. Just like there are apps that run on iPads only, there are apps that run on HC tablets only.
I own the iPad2 16GB WIFI (my very first apple product) ... been a pro-Linux / Anti-MSFT / Anti-AAPL guy for a long time. Given that ... take the next few bullets FWIW ..
CONS -
- The iPad2 's dependence on iTunes-PC tether
- The lack of ext. SD support .. a major downer for someone with a 16gb tablet.
- expensive accessories
- not hackable at all (as of now)
- yet another Apple product worshipped by the clan.
PROS -
- The display is gorgeous (videos and pictures look stunning). Screen rotations are quick and fast.
- Most websites that require flash ... interestingly, also have free iPad apps that play video just fine (i.e. CNN / HBO / CBS / ABC etc. etc. etc.)
- The battery truly runs 10+ hrs (even with moderate to heavy use)
- The battery truly does not run out when the unit is on standby. I close the smart cover in the night at (say) 50% ... the next day morning its at 49% ... and during the night it has also downloaded my emails (i.e. wifi stays on).
- Apps rarely bog down the iPad.
- Never had any lockups or reboots.
MOST IMPORTANT PROS
- Availability of apps. Its shocking how many native iPad apps there are. Almost every well-known company has an app on the iPad. TIVO has an app on the iPad. I doubt TIVO has the necessary resources to build a similar one for the Android. Also ... the iPad and the iPad2 have identical aspect ratios and screen resolutions making life really easy for software developers. Android Tablets will come in all flavors and aspect ratios causing major headaches for developers. To make matters difficult, schools and other institutions are buying iPads ... make it a more lucrative option for developers.
I am waiting for the Transformer to ship (on pre-order status @ Amazon and Target). Its going to be interesting.

Kinda curious since I'm gonna be getting one of the above next month what do you guys think about the iPad 2 vs the Xoom?
I have a Xoom right now and love it...just needs some apps. I wasnt terribly impressed with the ipad update - the hardware is nice but no updates to IOS, that was severly lame. Honeycomb is far more useful on a tab...but without apps it will suffer. They should have released the SDK sooner.
I definitely agree with you on the apps for the Xoom, I dunno though I think the Xoom is probably a bit more useful but I don't really like the UI that much.
Also I think the iPad has better multimedia support so I might go with that I'm not sure yet.

I am taking the ipod 2. Not enough tablet apps is a big issue (100 odd vs 65,000 is easy too big a gap). I want android to win but my wallet also won't go for a more expensive tablet either. And I want a wifi only version of the xoom since I wanted to tether it. I'm not going to pay for a data plan twice.

I agree with him too. I'm not getting one till the end of April but still at the moment for me personally apps, multimedia support, and I don't really like the UI of honeycomb as much as I like the iPad's at the moment.
Agreed. I'll probably end up buying an iPad 2, but might sell it if the Android Tablet App Market really starts to take off. What's the point of the tablet if I can't use it like I want to use it? I want Honeycomb to succeed though, but I am not going to be an early adopter in this particular segment.
I have a 64GB WiFi iPad and the apps make or break a device. You can have better specs, and even a better OS. But without quality apps, the device will suffer.
Some of the apps I use on a daily basis on my iPad are Pages (Wonderful full blown word processing app), Penultimate (Notes), Evernote (Notes again), and of course some games, like Infinity Blade (Amazing graphics!)
I won't be upgrading to an iPad 2, possibly the third generation if it has the rumored "retina" display. It would take some powerful hardware to pump out graphics at that resolution. And an amazing battery for that matter. Speaking of battery, it was the #1 reason I went with the iPad. I can easily make it through an entire school day and come home with 80% left My Incredible, not so much. It usually ends up at 30%.

I was going to get a xoom, I want to get a xoom. But as everyone else has stated, without apps, what good is it? If the Android Tablet Market takes off within the next couple of months, I may go with it, if not, I believe I will be getting an iPad 2. I am against everything Apple, but when they come out with a quality piece of electronics, and it is supported correctly... well you can't argue with that.

Buying an iPad2. Full HDMI mirroring for everything. iTunes DRM so I can play my digital copy movies. I don't want to pay for a 3G radio when I'll tether to my DroidX. This made a lot of the decision for men.

I am personally going with the ipad 2 wifi (tether, not paying data twice) because of support in general, especially apps. Plus that way I can experience both iOS and android apps. And finally a relative has the xoom so anytime I need to I can use it

i have the option to get the iphone with verizon and have no desire to play with that OS. it is outdated and less functional.. for the same reason, i have no desire to get a larger version of it... just doesnt do it for me.. then again... i am not so sure i like this whole tablet craze anyway... id rather a nice laptop.. touch screens are nice, but type this current post on a tablet and tell me you still want one... just doesnt interest me.
To me Android will always be better for me than anything apple. Its more about what i can do with the product I buy. I want to root/reflash and customize and with an android device thats an ez task. Apple locks everything down so a geek like me cant "play" enough. Ill take an ipad2 running android to piss off apple lovers anyday XD

I am a big Android fan. I have Droid X and bought the Xoom the first day it came out. Was very happy with my Xoom untill my brother got the new IPAD2. It's lighter, thinner and the screen blows the Xoom screen, The Xoom screen colors are washed out, if you open the same image on both ipad and Xoom you will understand what I am talking about , its the contrast ratio ! I paid $800 plus tax for a device with mediocre screen and below average contrast ratio ! That's why Apple will stay the best and the top company as they don't compromise their quality and now even their price is unbeatable.
Also it was a big surprise that all the websites I browsed worked better on the Ipad browser. Engadget, Android central, and Cnet websites worked perfectly including the embedded Videos and I don't know how the video is playing while the Ipad does not have flash ? Managed to play the videos on my Xoom using the new flash 10.2 but it is not as clear and smooth and high resolutions as the ipad.
Friendly Facebook for ipad blows any Android app I ever seen, all other Apps including the new Weather bug for Honeycomb is not as good as the Ipads. Only the Pulse app is almost the same on both platforms.
Even though the Xoom resolution is higher, everything on the ipad looks smoother and much better with brilliant colors.
Now, I am not sure what is the thing that I can do with the Xoom and can't do it using the ipad. To be Frank I went back and checked my receipt to return the Xoom and buy an ipad but unfortunately I passed the 14 days return policy for Best Buy.
I wont sell it in Craigslist and loose some money, its a good tablet but I should not look at the ipad screen as it really irritates me.

When you sell 15 million iPads in 9 months and over 100 million iphones, websites generally will make sure their content plays kindly with your devices. All of those websites detect if you are on an iPad and display content that works well on the ipad (HTML5 video for example). Some websites go into a special ipad tablet mode when you go to them. I think the NYT does this. That is why Steve Jobsy says flash is unnecessary, because he has 115 million devices in the wild and he knows websites will do what they can to accommodate those users instead of potentially missing out on that giant block of traffic. That will not be changing this year when the iPad2 really takes off either.
Yup and frankly speaking HTML5 is much better as videos looked much better than our flash with less battery consumption and very smooth scrolling.
But the question is I thought that Honeycomb supports HTML 5 , so why we can't play the videos without flash and just like the ipad ?

This way we have both in our house and I can use an ipad 2 whenever I feel like it (its actually my account so all my apps are on there anyway ).
Reality is, this religious war people have is freaking ridiculous. Just buy whatever makes you happy. One thing to note though about market share, last year when the iPhone 4 came out it blew away every Android phone on the market in benchmarks, specs, screen, apps, etc. and Apple was dominating the smartphone market.
Guess who's leading the smartphone market with leaps and bounds 1 year later?

HTML5 video works on Android 2.3, however I don't know about Honeycomb. I set my user agent to iPad with Dolphin Browser HD and HTML5 video worked perfectly.
Edit: You don't even have to do this. Just try HTML5 only video websites. I assume the same should apply to Honeycomb as well, if not that would be odd... I don't think I'm going to be using Flash for a while actually, as long as the site supports HTML5.

Thanks for the.advise, tried it and it worked but provided that I disablebthe flash plugin the choose Ipad agent. The videos plays using the Xoom video player in a new full size page which is fine but still not like the ipad that can play the embedded video within the same page with a full screen option.
But if I enable the plugin it will use flash even if I choose Ipad agent.

I have both the Xoom & the iPad 2, and to be honest, I'm using the iPad 2 a lot more than the Xoom, design wise they both have their pros and cons, same thing with hardware and build quality, I do however like the design of the Xoom a bit more and i like the feel more than the iPad just seems like its better put together to me. As for the power button on the Xoom, I'm not sure why people hate it, coming from the Viewsonic Gtab & a variety of other chinese tablets I think the button is great, I've never accidently hit it before. Anyways, I've got my Xoom about 3 days after it launched and only played with it for about 2 days max, cause frankly the apps just aren't there yet since it is a new device after all and there are still lots of bugs to work out this I understand. I've never owned the original iPad and was on the fence about the iPad 2 until I saw the specs for it, the dual core processor was what sold me on the iPad 2. Since getting it on launch day, I haven't been able to put it down, great device (yes, i hate the stupid iPhone UI) but the apps are years a head of the android apps, I love tinkering and customizing my devices with custom roms etc, but I find for daily use right now, the iPad 2 is a much better device since it has so much app support right now. Of course this could all change in about 6-12 months when more developers make apps for Honeycomb. Still, I find the overall quality of iPad apps/iPhone apps are better than android apps. My only gripe with the iPad is the crappy screen resolution on the iPad, sure the IPS screen has better viewing angles then the Xoom screen, but when you're looking straight at it you can tell the Xoom screen looks much sharper because of the resolution, if only Apple increased the screen resolution.
Anyways, both great devices but like I said the only thing that sucks on the Xoom is the app support right now which should be fixed in a few months once more devices are available. Totally different platforms, anyways, in my opinion the Xoom probably wont do 1/10th of the iPad sales just because the mass market wont get this device. Cause at this moment the iPad 2 is a much better functioning device, browsing is easier, and smoother, no (atleast I haven't had one) forced closes, it just seems like a more complete device for the mass market and I really think apple is smart for having their tiered pricing. So don't expect any SD card slot or anythign like that, cause if they do add an SD Card slot, then there is no incentive for people to buy the 64GB version.

Well who knows? But more than a few users have commented in that thread saying the ipad 1 had the same issue but to a lesser degree and that apple never did fix it. They are now seriously worried that they won't fix it this time either. Look how apple reacted to the iphone 4 antenna issue. Maybe they should stop looking at the ipad2 that way At any rate I'm not risking my time and money on a device with a screen that looks like that.
I bought an Ipad 2 on Friday and a Xoom on Saturday...The Ipad2 grew on me because its slick and pretty efficient. The Xoom wasnt even on my radar until I went back to Best Buy to ask a question about the Ipad 2. Long story short, I have 2 weeks to decide. Initially, I wasnt crazy about the Xoom, but its started to grow on me, seems to have more depth. I am a Droid/Inc guy, I root , the whole nine, so I like Android's platform, but I am scared about whether or not the apps and support will matchup with the potential of the Xooms hardware. The Ipad2 is like a lexus, rock solid, uber reliable, intuitive and slick - but also somewhat numb to the feel (experience).The Xoom seems more like a Bimmer...more fun to drive, but also more tempermental.
Xoom fans, please shed light on what you think are the biggest pro's to the Xoom from a hands-on perspective. Thanks!

Personally I'm waiting on the samsung galaxy 10.1. Its only 10 grams heavier than ipad2 and has better display and 8mp back camera.
For me the iPad isn't an option. Being tethered to their store is just not something I will do.
The apps will catch up. I can't the the iPad as being able to do anything the Xoom can't, but I can see the Xoom being able to do a many things the iPad cannot.

It also does not have a standard port of any kind. No micro USB, no micro HDMI. Have fun buying adapters..also the oh so frequent updates Samsung is known for... wait..

I own a Xoom, and I see this getting thrown around a lot -- Samsung's update problem.
They're miserable with their touchwiz devices (I own a Vibrant), but given that Google is using the Galaxy line of phones (Nexus S) to showcase Gingerbread, I would hazard it's safe to say if it's running as a Google experience device, the updates can and will come in a timely manner.
That said, we don't have a release date for the Galaxy 10.1 tablet, so in regards to the 'waiting game', I'd say that's it.
Android always wins over iOS for me. The hardware is almost secondary . Lots of 10" tablets on the horizon so personally wouldn't plunge right into the Xoom at the moment, but it's certainly the least worst large format tablet out there right now...

its a google experience device. theres no touchwiz, with virtually the same hardware (Tegra 2).
there won't be a problem updating this device (given that it will be unlockable/rootable, which most likely will be, but will confirm before purchasing).
as for the ports, i have no need for HDMI. theres rarely a time i need to connect a tablet to a monitor/TV. Again, this is my personal preference. No HDMI is not a dealbreaker for me. I never use the HDMI port on my droidx, i doubt ill need an HDMI port on my tablet.
there is no usb port, but USB is supported via charging port. in essence, a PC can recognize the tablet by using the charging port. i'm thinking this will most likely be a proprietary cable.
Of the two, I'd take the Xoom. I've owned an iPad when they first came out and sold it after three months. My biggest complaint with Apple is the file management system and lack of access to it. With Apple, if it doesn't sync through iTunes it's a pain in the butt. I love the fact that with my Xoom and my Incredible, I can browse it like a hard drive when hooked up to my PC, I can move folders/files around and have no issues. I love the fact I can change themes, my ROM, Kernel, etc. It provides the "end user" experience that I think any personal electronic device should. Moto Xoom all the way.
Xoom has a better web experience with the chrome stype browser and flash support. It also has much better versions of google apps such as maps, gmail, etc. The mutitasking is better and widgets are useful too. The Ipad2 is faster, more vibrant screen, better gaming device, sleeker, more app selection, etc. It depends on what's important to you. I'm on the fence myself and that's with the 25% discount. I don't pledge allegance to any device. The ipad2 is a very polished, well thought out machine. The price can't be beat from a hardware perspective. 30% thinner with better battery life and better performance than Xoom while costing less. Hardware wise there is no comparison. It flat out kicks butt on the Xoom. Software wise is another story. I much prefer Honeycomb. The only downside is that it will never be as smooth, fast, and efficient as IOS. We run bytecode due to Dalvik VM while they run native machine code. That gives them 20 to 30% more performance right off the bat even with everything else being equal. That's the price you pay for an open system that supports various hardware from different vendors versus writing an OS for specific hardware.
Anyway, sorry for posting the obvious. Just rambling.

if you're making analogies, i prefer this one. Apple iOS is like Windows95, same old OS running for the past 10 years, while honeycomb is like Windows7.
there are many things to love about honeycomb/Xoom....
1. customizable display and widgets - e.g. Thumb Keyboard (MUST!! 5 star recommended)
2. folder management
3. No need for syncing with desktop or itunes (never had to connect to pc)
4. Widescreen (perfect for video playback)
5. Stereo speakers
6. awesome camera (even better than iphone4) - i'm a photographer lover
7. 4G LTE Speed
8. MicroSD card
9. 2x RAM
10. barometer
11. Free Google Services! gmail, maps, places, navigation, youtube, etc
12. free mobile hotspot
13. Encryption
14. better Notification system!
not in any particular order and there's probably more. and i dont find any problems reading outdoors at full brightness. I know i have difficulties using ipad outdoors even with full brightness.

What cool things would I get out of rooting the Xoom?
I was fortunate enough to get 25% coupon price and I can't believe it will get old any time soon. On the other hand I also am fortunate to be able to get the black 16gb Ipad 2. (Ordered). I understand that there's not much customization but I do look forward to the straight forward functioning of the I pad. While waiting, I've downloaded about 25 apps to iTunes and will sync when it arrives.

Yes but it doesn't have expandable memory, wont be uogradeable to 4G (biggest difference), both have the same processor and most of all it is built by samsung. I will never buy a samsung product for the rest of my life. To each his own. My hierarchy goes HTC then motorola and nothing else right now but that's just my opinion.

Aside from a handful of apps that don't yet have a corresponding type of program on android, what capabilities are you referring to?
"Capabilities" are one of the areas that idevices will ALWAYS get buried in the big picture... whether or not someone wants an I pad for other reasons is another question... but it won't be capabilities

I agree with all of those except camera... we need camera mods to make it nice... I don't use it much so I don't mind but it is blurry as hell... iphone produces decent "hdr" photos. Then again my n1 camera only became usable with cm camera mods. One more thing that you forgot to mention is the market... yeah I said it... I prefer android market to ios any day... why? Its not closed... and you don't have to type your password in every time you download something. The fact that you need to enter your password every download is ridiculous... it reminds me of a needy clingy girlfriend. Every time I play with my iPod I thank jebus that it isn't my handset.

now I'm probably not gonna win a popularity contest posting this but after reviewing the technical specs of the transformer with those of the xoom, I'm a bit surprised - where's the catch?
I mean the transformer is gonna have a dock and as far as I have seen the same basic features the xoom has, only its lighter. And it costs less?!
Normally, when things appear to good to be true, they usually are...
So - where's the catch?
And, where's the hype??
I find the Asus tablet (the name is just silly, though; "eee pad" for real?) interesting as well, although of course the proof will be in the pudding. The dock looks nice, but if it's an additional $300 or so then I'll not be interested. And I've found that Asus can have really mixed build quality--some stuff is great, others not so much.
The thing that does interest me, though, is the IPS screen. If reviews come out that show it has great build quality (equal to the Xoom, which I consider excellent), it's available for a similar price ($599 or less for 32GB wifi-only), the dock is reasonably priced (say, $150 or less, which might be a stretch since it includes a battery), and it's available from my retailer of choice (Costco), then I might consider returning the Xoom and getting it instead.
The one huge caveat for me, though, is the custom skin Asus is putting on it. I do NOT want anything to slow down updates, and so I like that the Xoom is stock Honeycomb. I don't really know that I'd trust Asus to come out with timely updates...
The catch is that the Xoom is available now, and the Asus one isn't (unless you're in Taiwan). Ditto with any other HC tablet, which in all likelihood will be cheaper than the Xoom's current pricing. When the mass release comes, my bet is that the Xoom will get cheaper as well. Moto's CEO has said as much, although not explicitly for the Xoom.
BTW, if you are in the States and are looking at the Euro prices as a benchmark, be aware that the US dollar has been slipping as of late, and there is no guarantee that there'll be a 1:1 parity with the Euro pricing. Not sure about the Canucks, but generally they get the same prices as the Yanks'.

Also remember that most European countries have a VAT (Value Added Tax) that inflates prices by about 20%-25% depending on the country. Keep this in mind when looking at European prices and converting into USD.
If you own a Xoom now you are in a good position to get early updates and in one year the tablet market should be extremely competitive with great deals. Faster, lighter, thinner better screens, Android 4.0, you name it.
Quite often the hands on with some of these new tabs reveals a lot of cheap plastic, etc. The Xoom is extremely well built and I bet well be very desirable for quite some time.
Asus has only tablet i'm interested in & that's the Slate tablet..it costs like $1100.Plays 1080p video.Has a full Windows 7 operating system on a 12 inch tablet screen.Plus it has a I5 processor!!! But the all that said this thing has a battery life of only 3-4 hours & if you're watching a 1080p movie then you only get 2 hours . If it had a battery life of 7-8 hours i'd be all over it.So nothing can compare to the Xoom but that tablet

I have a dell duo which is a 10 inch windows tablet/netbook. I agree win 7 is tough for touch interfaces but there are ways you can fix that. I adjusted a bunch of settings to make it more touch friendly

I have three windows based tablets: A Viliv X70, A Viliv S5 and an HP 2510US. All are running windows 7 and all are gathering dust.
Believe what the others on this forum are saying. Windows is an awful operating system for tablets. Its just painful to use. Even with a fast processor, somehow everything seems to bog down and crawl. Just scrolling a PDF file becomes a chore.
Stick to Windows for Laptops and Netbooks, and Android for tablets. You'll be much happier.
And if you think an Android convertible will give you the best of both worlds, I found that the trade-off in thickness and bulk with a convertible made it easier to just use my cell phone or a laptop then a convertible tablet. Becomes painful and awkward to hold after a while.
Edit: Might have to amend that last statement: just took a look at the Asus eee Pad transformer - seems the keyboard completely separates from the main tablet so you aren't forced to hold the added bulk. I guess, if one was willing to carry the keyboard around, I could see something like that being pretty useful.
The Asus 12'' Win7 slate has stylus (with pressure sensitivity!) - so it's no problem to click even small icons. On the other hand the battery live is very short and it has two fans. I was considering it but will probably buy Android device instead.
Yeah, I was semi interested till I saw 2 hour battery life under normal usage. I'll stick with my Xoom.

Don't forget when put on the keyboard it DOUBLES your battery life! Supposedly a total of 16 hrs with both batteries!!!

I did run a x86 version of android on it, it sucked. hahaha Now I just basically use it to take to school or work and dual boot win 7 and ubuntu although with the duo I've been using it more for ubuntu instead of windows. If it did come anywhere close I wouldnt have gone out and gotten a xoom

Remember that in european countries VAT is actually included. What you see is what you get.
the transformer will be sold tomorrow on uk. hope someone make a video to compare screens and multi-touch.
I'm on fence on whether to buy a Motorola Xoom (32GB WiFi EU) or an iPad 2. In terms of price, here in Malta the Xoom seems more worth it as I can get it for 498 euro whilst the iPad 2 Wifi 32GB is at 609.
My main concerns are regarding software, and more importantly, apps availability. Now, before you bash my question, I've read a lot of reviews for both devices, and I've gone through lists for Honeycomb apps, but I'd like input from actual Xoom owners that are using it day to day.

well email and surfing is alot more fun and productive on a Xoom compare to an Ipad2 because of the integrated email and the flash enabled full size browser experience
but if you look at the build quality of them it sure looks like the Ipad2 went thought a lot more intensive QA then the Xoom since on the back of the xoom you kind of able to push in the plastic a bit.... thats makes me a sad panda
anyway comparing xoom vs ipad 2... there is only one logical answer
android =widgets
IOS = no widgets
and with widgets you get your information a lot faster like news, socks and twitter on one page... so yeah and i do use that alot
productivity = xoom
build quality = ipad2
that said i still think the ipad2 really rocks since it's a finished product but it does not have the widgets
I've owned an iPad and now I own a XOOM. For me personally, the ipad doesn't come close - the OS is far too restrictive and the dependency on iTunes was a killer for me (I use linux on all of my home machines, forcing me to run a windows virtual machine just to activate the damned thing).
With that said, the XOOM, or rather, Honeycomb doesn't even come close with regards to app availability. Even if you take the huge headstart that apple have (1 year+), the ipad has simply always been better marketed and there are a lot more apps available. Let's not even get started on the android market place; it's dire. The worst. And for some reason, it's even worse on honeycomb than it is on phones; no ability to rate apps, plenty of bugs (some of which have been addressed in 3.1), no ability to view only tablet apps, terrible filtering and search in general, etc. Apple's app store is how it should be done, the android market place has a long way to come.
The situation is improving for honeycomb and I personally wouldn't dream of going back to the ipad, but for friends and family who couldn't care less about the restrictive nature of iOS and the other things that I dislike, I would recommend the ipad.
With all that said, it looks really weird to see me almost recommending Apple, because I personally can't stand the software. Oh well...
Well, I've never owned an I pad but I have just purchased the xoom and I LOVE it!!!
Most comparisions regard the xoom better, but with the I pad having loads more apps - to some people, this is the deal breaker.
However, if you want a true tablet experience and not just an oversized iPod touch, then go for the xoom.
The xoom has better OS, greater browser and keyboard, better cameras and support flash, it is also not tied down to any PC software such as iTunes and includes more customization options such as widgits. (Android includes a free turn by turn navigation system too)
Oh and the maps and YouTube apps are better on the xoom and have more features (Google property pays off)
I made my decision and I'm happy with my xoom - but the choice is yours.

I have to disagree. I think the xoom build quality is top notch and better than the iPad. It's just when I hold the iPad I feel like it will break... to thin for my liking.
Now applications look better in my opinion on the iPad. Like it was mentioned here the Apple eco system keeps me away.

I have owned an iPad, and will likely own an iPad 2 when the current shortage lets up. There is very little left to say about the iPad (either version) that hasn't been said already. They are exceptional devices, gamechangers, perfectly designed to introduce mobile technology to mainstream users. Almost anyone can be up and running in 15 minutes with an iPad, even with no experience and iOS rewards those who embrace its deliberate limitations.
My first experience with Android was with an Archos 5 tablet, and then an Archos 101. I bought both as relatively inexpensive ways to get acquainted with Android. and both were very frustrating experiences in different ways. They really made me begin to view Android as a very niche market.
However, when I needed a new phone and decided that I couldn't wait for a Windows Phone 7 device to be offered here, and refused to get an iPhone, I opted for the Galaxy s and a whole world opened up to me...which then led me to my new Xoom.
I have been playing with it for about half a day now after doing a great deal of reading...I unlocked it, tried to root it and ran into the "stuck on the red M" problem, spent about 2 hours reading and sorting out how to get myself out of the trap via adb, rooted it at last, installed CWM then flashed the Tiamat kernel and finally began loading up my apps. Loved every moment of it. The build quality of the device, in my opinion, is excellent. It feels much better and more substantial in my hands than the iPad. The screen is top notch and I really like the honeycomb environment for work and play.
Most of all, I like the fact that Android is a living, breathing OS. SO much to explore and learn and investigate.

With a Xoom I could have never ever owned a PC and set it up and get it working. It does not require you to hook it up to itunes first. With the iPad... yea I dont know about 15 minutes but after you hook it up to your computer to unlock it (lol) you can finally use it. In my house we have both, I like the Xoom better

I couldn't have said it better. The Xoom is my third Android tablet, my second Tegra2 tab, and the most hands-on and most rewarding and fun to own. I have never liked the Apple zeitgeist and have always avoided that product. I prefer the freedom to mess around, get into scrapes and come back from the brink with a better tab and a lot more knowledge. I think that as an open source, Android will continue to grow and evolve in wonderful ways and I want to be along for the ride.
Also, this thing is built like a tank.

iPad/iOs = Checkers.
Xoom/Honeycomb = Chess.
I have played around with both Ipad and Xoom. I currently own a Xoom. Ipad is probably fine if you want something simple with few options(not talking about apps).
The Xoom is pretty cool, and even cooler after unlock & root. The downside is app / game availability, but it's getting better every day.
The killer for me between the two is multitasking. The xoom has it, the ipad not so much.
And also, no itunes. The xoom works out of the box.
The Ipad on the other hand has more accessories, wee..
Keep in mind that these sorts of issues are ultimately a matter of taste, so the things I don't like the iPad may not bother you at all.
I bought an iPad2 and returned it within 48 hours. I really can't explain my utter contempt for that device, but I just hated everything about it. I'm not an Apple hater, mind you; I owned every iPhone through the 3GS and was one of those dorks standing in line on launch days. I really, really wanted to like the iPad 2, but after having owned two Android handsets (and being a big gadget whore) I couldn't stomach going back to an iOS product.
What I hated about the iPad 2:
-Screen resolution sucks
-Too thin and flimsy feeling
-Stock keyboard is HORRIBLE and there's no way to change it
-No widgets
-No UI customization, period
-Cameras suck
-"Notification system" is sort of a joke
-"Multi-tasking" is also sort of a joke
-Far higher cost for iPad apps vs. iPhone/iPod apps, developers nickel & dime you for every little thing (subscriptions, in-app purchases, etc) - seriously, the whole ecosystem was like a giant money sucking vacuum
-QA on my particular unit was terrible - massive light leaks around the edges of the screen and 3 stuck pixels within 1 day of use (and this is not an isolated issue, though Apple is replacing defective units but making sure to blame their supplier)
iOS is getting long in the tooth, and this is hugely magnified in tablet form, especially with the crappy-looking display. I felt like I was using old technology, despite the awesome internal specs. The best comparison I can come up with between Honeycomb and iOS on a tablet is something like Windows 7 compared to Windows 3.1.

if you want a platform to play stuff from itunes.. ipad

While I will state now I am no expert on iOS or the Ipad1/2 I will say this:
My Xoom has me constantly entertained and I've NEVER felt I needed an app that I didnt have at least 4 decent choices of. I have also never left limited on my Xoom for any tasks I wish to undertake, I stream all my media from my computer (via WiFi OR 3G) so everywhere I am I have access to all my media (and now thanks to Google Music moreso) and with Remote Desktop I have access to my Linux and Windows machines no matter where I am. The Xoom constantly feeds me information without having to do anything but look at my homescreens.
I have played with friends Ipad1/2's and while for the most part things seemed smooth and work well I always had this feeling of being lost when looking through the app screens, its like all the icons look the same (same size, many of them same colors) just felt very sterile and un-enjoyable and you get ZERO information without going from one app to another just felt like so much work for simple basic information readily available on my Xoom.
I've never been a fan of iOS or Apple's strategy towards their customers but I really tried to look at my 2 options without bias before choosing my Xoom. As several others are stated you really dont have any choices with Apple products, you take what your given and if you dont like your options you dont have any more to look at.
Android (despite its fragmentation in some areas and flaws, hiccups in others) is the best choice if you like options and a desire to learn more and have real options with your chosen device. If you want something simple that tells you what you want then Apple products are for you. If you dont mind a hiccup with something here and there and having the ultimate say in the apps and add-on parts for your device then I say without a doubt Android is the way to go. Widgets are the best thing to happen to phones/tablets as it gives you so much information without having to do anything to get it and you can always enter into that app for a more detailed look and more options.
As for the comment on Apple App Store having more options, maybe it does but judging by the amount the Android Market has grown over 1 year I highly doubt Apple will be able to say the same thing next year. More and more developers either jump ship from Apples restrictions in apps or choose to release their products on both Android and iOS platforms which means in many cases the Apple App Store is slowing down and stagnating in some areas due to the open nature of app development for Android OS, its infinitely easier to write and sell and app for Android than iOS.
As a side note a friend of mine and I compared apps, we both had some niche apps and some common ones... my total cost was about $40 (like I said I have some apps that cost about $15, my phone apps only had a grand total of like $10) but all in all his total for all similar (sometimes the same app) was about $200, that alone pushed my decision for another android device with the Xoom vs Ipad2.
If your cheap and want to hack get the Xoom. If you want to easily be able get VIDEOS to play fluently for rent or TV episodes get iPad. I got the ipad because it was so gay to get Videos on the thing. Having to convert then drag to device verse iTunes makes iTunes seem easier. Especially is JB.

I am not sure I would call the Xoom cheap (not in build quality and certainly not in price) and I don't see what the sexual orientation of the iPad has to do with the issue.
I feel the video converting question is a non issue. For me, converting via iTunes or by a third party app is just as big a pain, and the iPad's native video app is even more limited codec-wise than the Android stock Video. Anyway, just use a player like MoboPlayer or VPlayer which can show pretty much anything, and you are golden.
However I agree that there is no real BEST TABLET...it is just a matter of personal preference.

So spend more money for the more restrictive device? Also, you don't have to hack the xoom. The Xoom has more option out of the box than the ipad.
You didn't manage to get gay videos on the Xoom?
