Xoom or Ipad 2

Kinda curious since I'm gonna be getting one of the above next month what do you guys think about the iPad 2 vs the Xoom?

I have a Xoom right now and love it...just needs some apps. I wasnt terribly impressed with the ipad update - the hardware is nice but no updates to IOS, that was severly lame. Honeycomb is far more useful on a tab...but without apps it will suffer. They should have released the SDK sooner.

I definitely agree with you on the apps for the Xoom, I dunno though I think the Xoom is probably a bit more useful but I don't really like the UI that much.
Also I think the iPad has better multimedia support so I might go with that I'm not sure yet.

I am taking the ipod 2. Not enough tablet apps is a big issue (100 odd vs 65,000 is easy too big a gap). I want android to win but my wallet also won't go for a more expensive tablet either. And I want a wifi only version of the xoom since I wanted to tether it. I'm not going to pay for a data plan twice.

I agree with him too. I'm not getting one till the end of April but still at the moment for me personally apps, multimedia support, and I don't really like the UI of honeycomb as much as I like the iPad's at the moment.

Agreed. I'll probably end up buying an iPad 2, but might sell it if the Android Tablet App Market really starts to take off. What's the point of the tablet if I can't use it like I want to use it? I want Honeycomb to succeed though, but I am not going to be an early adopter in this particular segment.

I have a 64GB WiFi iPad and the apps make or break a device. You can have better specs, and even a better OS. But without quality apps, the device will suffer.
Some of the apps I use on a daily basis on my iPad are Pages (Wonderful full blown word processing app), Penultimate (Notes), Evernote (Notes again), and of course some games, like Infinity Blade (Amazing graphics!)
I won't be upgrading to an iPad 2, possibly the third generation if it has the rumored "retina" display. It would take some powerful hardware to pump out graphics at that resolution. And an amazing battery for that matter. Speaking of battery, it was the #1 reason I went with the iPad. I can easily make it through an entire school day and come home with 80% left My Incredible, not so much. It usually ends up at 30%.

I was going to get a xoom, I want to get a xoom. But as everyone else has stated, without apps, what good is it? If the Android Tablet Market takes off within the next couple of months, I may go with it, if not, I believe I will be getting an iPad 2. I am against everything Apple, but when they come out with a quality piece of electronics, and it is supported correctly... well you can't argue with that.

I have a NookColor (rooted).
Buying an iPad2. Full HDMI mirroring for everything. iTunes DRM so I can play my digital copy movies. I don't want to pay for a 3G radio when I'll tether to my DroidX. This made a lot of the decision for men.

lol I forgot about DRM I have a significant number of songs with DRM.
On a side note white or black iPad.

the white one reminds me of old macbooks... which look kinda gross after about a year of use.

Also, I am going to wait until HTC makes me the tablet of my dreams before I jump on the honeycomb train. HTC Flyer 2, anyone?

I thought about the white getting dirty too but I might still try it if the screen protector covers the white portion as well.

I am personally going with the ipad 2 wifi (tether, not paying data twice) because of support in general, especially apps. Plus that way I can experience both iOS and android apps. And finally a relative has the xoom so anytime I need to I can use it

i have the option to get the iphone with verizon and have no desire to play with that OS. it is outdated and less functional.. for the same reason, i have no desire to get a larger version of it... just doesnt do it for me.. then again... i am not so sure i like this whole tablet craze anyway... id rather a nice laptop.. touch screens are nice, but type this current post on a tablet and tell me you still want one... just doesnt interest me.

To me Android will always be better for me than anything apple. Its more about what i can do with the product I buy. I want to root/reflash and customize and with an android device thats an ez task. Apple locks everything down so a geek like me cant "play" enough. Ill take an ipad2 running android to piss off apple lovers anyday XD

Windows 8 Build 81xx

I was wondering if any of the developers here have been following the Windows 8 stuff? I just read and article that they are going to release the first build of it this week at the big Microsoft thingy thats going on. They are releasing the build to developers, AND to the public!
Now, since Win 8 will be ARM supported, I'm wondering if were going to be able to put it on our A500's. I had originally wanted to buy a W500, but when your buying off craigslist you get what you find, and i love my A500 plenty fine, but i've always liked playing with the new Windows versions coming out, and the OS is pretty much designed for touch and tablet.
I know i'll be keeping my eyes open one way or another and hitting download as soon as i see they open a beta build up for us.

I don't think our A500's will be supported by MS, but since there aren't any quad-core tablets out there yet (production-wise, that I know of), MS will probably be using the tegra 2, which means it should be at least compatible.
So, it should hopefully run, but I think it's going to require a bit of hacking.

I really doubt that it will run on our a500's for one reason, hard drive space! Look up windows 8 demo on you tube and you will see that it is very similar to windows 7, just with a tablet friendly ui. You can still access good old windows with the touch of a button. I do have to admit that its looks pretty slick.

If you read into things, windows 8 is supposed to be -very- small operating wise, it's designed to gear towards tablet interfaces, it is able to run off of a flash drive.

I think our Acer Iconia will be one of the better suitors of Windows 8 thanks to its USB port. I would love to have Windows 8 ported on my Acer, especially if they are giving the build to the public.

Windows 7 only takes like 10GB fresh, with a good compression, or just a 32GB SD card for more space, it'd run just fine. Space isn't an issue.

They are, the BUILD conference is at 9am today, and they are supposed to release it to public and developers at it today.

I'll still love to see it runs on a quad core thing, with the ability to turn down part of the processor or dramatically turn down the clock when running on battery to save power.
I used this A500 long enough to realize that Android is just a toy. To be serious, it has a long way to go. It is so convenient to use for before nap browsing, that I don't turn on my laptop at night after all, but if you tell me I only have this for the week, I'll just say no. Better to bring both with me. Windows 7 is essential for me.

From a day-to-day use stand point, this just isn't true. However, if you need a power house, then I agree with you. But getting this tablet was one of the reasons for getting rid of my netbook. Outside of heavy gaming, which I don't do anyways, I do not see anything I can do on the netbook that I couldn't do on the tablet for everyday functions (except print, but I almost never do that either lol)

I got rid of my laptop (Was going out anyway) And got the a500 instead of another laptop. So far im pleased, i wished Skype would get working, i'd use it a lot more. I have a pretty nice powerhouse for a desktop so for anything that i need to do with some real power, gaming and such, i can sit at it for without a problem.
Id love to get a microsoft arc keyboard or something, small enough to use on my iconia, cause right now, since i have a laptop stand still, i use a old apple keyboard via the USB, its easier for typing more after all.
I'd like to see windows 8 on it, simply to see what i could do with it, i like toying with it, my A500 is my toy, rather than a significant use item, i can do what i need on it, so it serves its purpose, but it was still more a toy then anything else when i got it.

The one thing missing for me is the ability to develop android applications on the iconia. It's funny that you need another OS to code for Android.

Well unfortunately the builds thate came out were only on desktop uses, not for the ARM processor, guess was cross our fingers and wait.

Just like WP7 is limited to certain chipsets, I believe the ARM version might only be limited to Tegra 3 and some other faster processors.

I read somewhere from ms that win8 arm will run on many chips.as well as tegra. But not sure where this article went.I do know it was direct from Microsoft.

Regardless of OS, if your day-to-day function is coding/dev work, I would imagine you wouldn't be doing it from a tablet anyways Thats like a mechanic trying to run a full garage with a 25 piece "mechanics" tool set from Walmart lol. I am a project manager and I couldn't imagine not having a full laptop to do what I need it to do. I do also have a PC at home, hooked to my TV. But if I was not running an IIS server or if I didn't do web design work, I would probably not have anything else at home but a tablet.

Well that's the only thing I'm still doing on my laptop since I got the tablet. Would be nice if I had the chance of doing it with the tablet too and not bring both when going on trips.

That's not our tablet. That's the Acer Iconia Tab W500 not the A500. The A500 runs NVIDIA Tegra 2.
In any case, i'm still really hopeful for getting Win 8 onto the A500. With the ARM support, there has to be a way that this can be done eventually. I was actually starting to think that I might have to sell my Iconia and get a new tablet in March when its released. But now only time will tell. But just the possibility of running Windows here is awesome. =D

Here I thought my tablet had an Atom processor in it!

Well here is a small update. It does not help us Iconia A500 people, but it does help people with other tablets! And puts out hope that if Microsoft delivers a preview for the ARM version of the OS we may be able to test it out some.

Acer Iconia vs HP Touchpad

Hello all. I'm on a bit of a budget and I'm going to buy one of these two tablets. Right now I'm leaning towards the a500. Was hoping to get some input and opinions on what you think I should do. I realize posting this in this forum I might get slightly biased opinions, so be it.
The only thing that makes me hesitate on the Acer is it has a slightly slower processor out of the box, but we're only talking .2ghz. What has the Acer been OC'd to still running stable?
Also, I see the wifi card uses the 2.4ghz spectrum, I believe this should allow me to tether this to my evo 3d with no problems?
Lastly, if anyone has anything to add, or something else I should consider before purchasing, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The touchpad doesn't run android and only has a port of cm7 which I think is still in beta/alpha. And they're extremely hard to get your hands on one for the price it has been lowered to. And the iconia can be had for $299 for the 16gb model on black friday

I would prefer the Touchpad if I could choose again. This is a personal experience for me, and I didn't have a good one with this honeycomb tablet. It has quite a few bugs that a lot of android users are facing, but could be avoided if a custom rom that fixes the bugs is installed, which voids your warranty. Also, Most Honeycomb tablets have the so called "Portrait lag", which makes the tablet slightly choppy or jittery (depends on roms, how much choppy) when it's in a portrait mode. In landscape, it's perfectly smooth. And if you would like to use the tablet in both orientation, I would first wait if the ICS fixes all the issues including the portrait lag. This lag is present in EVERY SINGLE rom I've tried (can't be avoided). Some people are actually saying that ICS will most likely fix the bugs, but bring different bugs to the android tablets. We have to try the ICS on tablets to know for sure. Anyway this is only my opinion, and again, if I could choose, I wouldn't buy an android tablet. I am actually thinking of selling this and getting a Touchpad soon..
Again, this is just my opinion, so all android fans, don't bash on me.

Although this is not the first time I've heard of what's been described as "portrait lag", I've never paid attention to it, as my tab stays locked in landscape (personally don't understand why people even use portrait mode, no offense intended).
So I just took it out of lock for the first time since June, when you had to run Gingerbreak locked in portrait mode IIRC.
I just ran through a dozen pages in browser, books, documents, ran through my apps, all my home screens, etc., and experienced nothing close to lag. Could someone maybe elaborate a bit more on the experience please?

The lag is terrible in 3.1 but it seems to have gone away in 3.2. I haven't used web OS since the 1st palm pre for sprint and although it looks very elegant there isn't enough devs for it and is possibly done with for good which means no future support. Now its been rumored the iconia will see an official release of ics so it will make this tab feel brand new again. The only reason I could see myself getting the touchpad would be to run cm7/9 on it but its a very nice looking piece of hardware. And I'm not an android fan boy. I do have the iconia tab and an evo3d but I also have a ipad and iPod touch so I'm kinda into everything.

I use portrait mode, because Google is so stupid that they put the status bar on the bottom and made the already narrow 16:9 tablet even narrower and its very annoying to browse the wn where you can see only small amount of the website at a time. This is also why I prefer 4:3 Touchpad. If the status bar is on one side of the screen, say like archos 101 G8, then I personally think it will make viewing web more pleasant. Same goes to PDF, document reading. Portrait mode is much better for that IMO.
And you may have misunderstood what I said, so let me clarify. The bug is called portrait 'lag' but its not lag, but as I explained, its choppiness, and jitteriness (is this even a word..? Lol). It gives users not so good experience. At least to me.

For the record, my A500 can run stable at 1.6 GHz, though I keep it at 1.4 to be reasonable.... the Tegra 2 seems to overclock well.

Just want to chime in on OC..with Thor's v13 ROM, my a500 oc'ed to 1.5G stable day to day operation

Running 1.68ghtz. Thors 3.9R3 kernel.
But really, who would even try to compare a TP to an Iconia? Especially considering they are no longer in production (unless you buy a notebook pc, then they toss one in).
HP never was really known for support, but, if you wanna get a discontinued item, hey, you get what you pay for
And talk about backtracking;
1. Let's merge with Compaq (2 losers become 1 big loser)
2. Let's buyout Palm, and change the name to Pre, now lets kill the line
3. Let's put out a tab, but nobody wants it
4. Let's kill the tab line
5. Oh, let's also get out of the PC business as well
6. Wait, all the tabs sold at 99 bucks, let's make another 1/4 mil units
7. Wait, we were kidding, we're not getting outta the PC business
8. And those extra tabs??? well, gotta buy a notebook to get one

If you're going to get an A500 wait until Black Friday, it's only a week away

I have both & use both as intended (for entertainment, quick email, etc.). For better support, I would stick with the Acer unit, even though very good community support is provided for the HP unit, it still is considered a "dead" unit.

i say buy the touchpad. as of now, cm7 runs pretty damn well and webos is a true gem for when you just want to browse, play emulators, use social apps, or schedule your calendar.
Battery life is also phenomenal.

I had the original Palm Pre and the only real problem I had with it was it's build quality, but I liked webos. Yes, it's a dead OS, but if I can dual boot into a stable version of android that is fine. The build quality on the HP touchpad seems to be excellent as well.
However, I see myself mainly running android, and would think a device where it is the native OS would probably be the best in terms of community/developer support. I've also never had a honeycomb device and it would fun to play around with until ICS.
That being said, I'm a bit worried of build quality with the Acer. I noticed a door covering the microSD slot, and it seemed kinda flimsy.
I figure I can get both for $300 new, but the touchpad would also come with some extras like the folio case and Bluetooth keyboard for that price.
I'm going to get the Acer. The feature that put it over the top? It's getting a port of GTA 3, it had better be a good port. lol.

The sd/sim port, indeed can seem a bit weak, but, once you know how to get it off correctly, it's ok. Took mine off numerous times and no issues. But it's been a month since i needed to remove it, so it doesn't happen every day. Just don't be the hulk, as really it's easy.
The android community is number one, bar none.
But really, for a few dollars more, you can get the 501 with 3g (just don't get it from at&t as it's sim locked.
I just love rubbing in my download speeds with my friend (iPad owner). He stopped playing games with me. Or when I flash a new rom in 5 minutes, with a completely different theme and look.
The best is when I whip out my 320gb ext HDD and play films.

They are like apples and oranges. Both are sweet, but oh, so different.
I bought the 16GB Touchpad from a local Walmart on the morning of the fire sale. I would not have done so otherwise. Do I regret the purchase? No. Do I use it often? No. I am much more interested in my Acer A500 or my little Galaxy Tab 7". They are versatile and FUN! I use whatever device is handy and is charged. That means I also use my 1st gen iPad as much as any other tablet. I just picked up a refurbished Acer W500, so that is my current plaything.
Follow your bliss or your wallet, whatever works, works.

LOL. You hit the nail right on the head I'd love to get a TP if I can only find one for $100.It woul be a nice toy to play with for Android ports, but nothing serious. When I first heard of the firesale (literally a couple hours after HP announced it), I dropped into all nearby electronic stores and they were already sold out. I'm seeing all kinds on classifies sites like kijiji and craigslist but they're all $250-300 which is more than I'd like to pay.
So if you can get one for $100, go for it. Otherwise, I'd either recommend the A500 or wait 1-2 months for a newer Tegra 3 device.

As of now the Touchpad is dead with webOS and not stable enough with android yet. You really can't do much with it now besides browsing the web and email. I don't like honeycomb very much but at least the Iconia will get the ICS upgrade.

I also bought today the BB Playbook for $199cdn (the deal wasn't to be missed). Very nice machin.
Will be on sale in the US on black friday at Staples

I'd rather get a tetra based tablet, the touchpad is nice but who knows how top end games will be supported on that device. I had a nook color Flanders even the smoothness that it got to only made me want a real tablet

I'm thinking about buying a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet, because of the stylus panel.
But just saw this Benchmark and now I don't know if it's real?!
Is it possible to have that bad benchmarks with a tegra 3 cpu?
The HTC Flyer is the only option, but it's only 7". Maybe a Asus Transformer Prime without stylus would be the better choice or even the Transformer?!

Of course it's tegra 2, everyday is a new tegra 3 device in the in the news, just mixed it.

That would be a big point against lenovo for me! Who knows what you could do with a digitizer...
I've read a lot reviews and stuff, now. If you are interested in a good tablet like the transformer prime, but with digitizer I would suggest to wait for the next HTC releases with Scribe, ICS, unibody and 10"+ If you can't wait - GET IT!

Actually, over at Laptop mag they did an extensive benchmark of the Thinkpad against a few others and to me it seem to be quite fine.
I've been on the fence between the Thinkpad, The Toshiba Thrive and the original Transformer and so far I am still leaning towards the Thinkpad.
Now if one is to compare it benchmark wise to the Transformer Prime, then there is no contest.

To me raw benchmarks mean absolutely nothing. It's all about real life performance. And for my needs the Tablet works just fine.

it's all about business
You must understand, the ThinkpadTablet is a business model. I here people arguing all the time why to buy this instead of a SGTAB. It does not even come with youtube preinstalled ( mine didn't ) so if your looking for video playing and Angry Birds you're wasting your money. I'm not saying it's not capable, it's fully capable but you're wasting it's potential. I tried most of the tablets and none raise to this. I even own an iPad 2... but it's all about multimedia and 1000 gb of games on that. I find the Thinkpad business apps and secure connections to be the best. It can connect to VPN encryption like not other. The pen is also superb. Great battery and connectivity. Robust with a great Keyboard-Folio Case. The OS is stable but i would have liked a Custom ROM. Still if they update to ICS it will be perfect.
Really a hidden jewel among the others, but only if you use it for the above purposes. Otherwise buy a SgTab and than buy a pen and you'll like it more.

Hey,
Recently i've bought a Thinkpad Tablet. And i'm using GTB 10.1 p7500.
Maybe in not distant future, i'll make a comparison of those two. But for now, my GTB is going to be sold. Lenovo is much better. Not in every wy, but the way i'm using it...

I am generally disappointed with this tablet. While I was writing this reply I had to reboot. FC all the time, it lags way too much (Flash, launcher, writing this comment and scrolling up and down a web page)
But it boot up very fast!

Hello again.
After month of using TPT, here is some summary:
for:
- wide range of inputs (hdmi, usb, sdcard)
- stylus
- external keyboard with pin pointer
- very natural colors
- stability
- most of the unneeded apps can be uninstalled
- outstanding rubber-like cover
- very good for watching movies on my big screen, via hdmi
against:
- battery (i have to charge it every day - GTB once every two or three days)
- lack of rooting procedure
- BT 2.1 (GTB BT 3.0), very sluggish
- nobody knows how to root this thing
- sensitivity of the screen (GTB is far more sensitive)
- did i mention rooting problems ?
For now i can say, tha this is very good tablet. But if you want to use it as it is. If you like to personalize everything, if you need root or something like that, wait or buy something else...
For me ideal would be tab like GTB but with docking bay/docking station with all the features that TPT have.

I took that Keyboard Folio docking section apart and truth be told, Lenovo could have changed the setup to allow an additional USB port in that area.

you dont take your work truck to an engine dyno or a drag race - you get it to work... are you really going to look at benchmark?
you get this tablet for the computrace, one of the best warranty in the service, some free app bundle, a pen (and a place to put it), ips display, hdmi out, full size USB that works with a number of devices, and a tablet that doesnt look like a toy or a device meant for female audiences

Aw, hell. I guess that means it'll never come in pink. Is it too butch? Would I look to dorky changing out my hair doodads in its reflection (when it's off, of course. Or should I buy one of the Mirror apps when I go pickup my blinker fluid?)
Seriously. If I get one of these, should I only take it out when I have my Chuck Taylors or Birkenstocks on?

New tablets from Asus

Asus is just about to release two new products, the "new Asus Transformer Pad" and the Fonepad 7.
I was surprised to see the Transformer using a Tegra chip, since it isn't a big deal against its competitor. Also, the camera has a lower resolution. The screen is really cool and the other props are great too. I think for now I'll stick with my TF300T. It still works without issues and Android 4.3 is rocking on here. But the Fonepad 7 have my attention. I wonder how does it go against the Nexus 7 with 3G.
What do you guys think?

The new transformer (TF701T) is the successor to the TF700 (not the TF300). Looks like a substantial improvement in specs, and Tegra 4 is (supposed to be) considerably better than Tegra 3, multiple times faster both in CPU and GPU performance. But unknown how it fairs against the best of the current competition. Unfortunately, the Tegra 4 GPU is a little behind the times in terms of API support (still at DX 9 level, OpenGL ES 2), the Tegra 5 will fix that next year. This may, or may not, be important with some games and modern graphics-reliant apps.
I am not replacing my TF300 anytime soon either. It serves me fine still. Holding on until 2014...

YOU FORGOT THE ASUS BOOK TRIO!!!!!

Well I'm tempted because of the higher resolution and the better ppi but not sure just yet. Wanted to buy the new S Galaxy also so I'm taking a wait and see approach here.
Having said that, I would never pay more than 500 euro for my tablet the Trio while nice will for sure be too expensive. Not a big fan of Windows 8 and the ehole swipe gesture thing.

I will go with tf 701 for android or the asus taichi if you like windows.

The asus Trio isnt a tablet, so putting a 500 euro price on tablets doesnt make sense. Its an actual touch screen laptop, with an i7, that also just happens to have android. I for one cant wait. If its under 1000 USD Ill likely pick it up I love the look / design ( although it would likely never be undocked ).

I understand where you are coming from, but paying around 1000 USD for a small screen and underpowered ultrabook doesn't make sense to me, I know it will run smoothly and featuring an i7 is impressive but: the battery-life will also be a big factor.
I know it may be a personal preference but I'd rather have a 500 USD tablet and a 700 USD ultrabook.

Not to pick on you, but I hardly consider anything with an i7 underpowered. The intel atom processor only powers the android system. The battery life specs are listed for each on their own. When combined, they also add power to whichever system is on. Ive seen speculation of 16/18 hrs docked on the android side, and 7-10 hours running windows. This device has more much more power and features than a macbook air. Any 4th generation i7 touchscreen laptop wont be cheap my friend.
Personally I love my tf300t and replaced my horrible asus prime with it. I had an i7 macbook pro but a friend needed something decent, and I wasnt using it since the asus became my primary device ( aside from my phone...a note 2 ). I also have a custom built i7 3770k / 32gb ram desktop at home hooked up to 2 - 26" samsung screens. Thats where the bulk of my work takes place whem im home.
There are always times while im out that I wish I had a windows device with me for microsoft specific tasks. Since I always have my asus with me. Swapping the tf300 out for something like the trio would make perfect sense. I would still have the horsepower to edit / render video and run photoshop on the fly and still not have to be plugged in all day as Android would be the main system in use. Also its a pain going to the desktop in the basement anytime I needed to use odin / fastboot / adb, or need to do something light but in a hurry.
You are absolutely correct tho, its all a matter of personal opinion.

I called it underpowered compared to "only" ultra-books of the new generation. Since I will never use a laptop, ultrabook without a DVD or Blueray option the Macbook was never of any interest for me. I've had a Vaio for a few years, but the battery life sucked (2 hours!)
I am not going to judge the Trio before I've tested it, but I am just a bit skeptical if Asus or any manufacturer at this point can deliver the promised Windows & Android experience at a reasonable price with enough power. Sure, the specs and datasheets are looking fine but we'll see.
Feeling with you I know especially when it comes down to doing office stuff I'd love to have a real desktop instead of my tablet to work on.
For now I am very excited for the TF 701 and taking a wait and see approach with the Trio.

Forgot to mention, that running Windows 8 will also enable you to dualboot Linux Mint, Ubuntu so that's a great choice I didn't think off.

Wait and see is exactly what im doing. I am also interested in the new Padfone. It looks like an awesome combination of tech, minus windows 8. I always use my tablet and phone together anyway. The fact that I could use the phone to power the Tablet and still have a keyboard dock... just awesome

I really like some of the ideas Asus has and how they are putting it together, been a fan of this company since building my first custom PC their mainboards are just the best bar none by far.
Would be awesome, if Asus could find a way to make the battery removable and expand the RAM.
