Google holding the source code sucks - Galaxy Tab General

Saw this on Android Central, this is really going toslow down how quickly we can get Honeycomb on our tabs. Which sucks, why is android being so annoying?

Yea were def not gettin Honeycomb by official means...
But hey thats why we got xda : P

Having experience with Xoom I think it makes sense to delay releasing the source code. There are sufficient number of issues needs to be ironed.
I cant remember FCs on Froyo but there are plenty on Zoom because apps are not using proper Api or else.
So let us give Google time to rectify software and save ourselves from frustration and bad mouth.

It seems clear to me that the Xoom was rushed out the door in order to steal a march on the iPad2, and Honeycomb isn't really quite ready for primetime, which is why they are delaying the release of the source.

Dave

It's all speculation. Google tends to stay pretty tight until they have a press conference or release party. Look at FroYo - it was a total surprise to wake up and find that they where dropping source into the tree.
The blog-o-sphere refers to Gingerbread as 3.0. I believe that Google has round-about-ly confirmed that the name is in fact "GingerBread", but we won't have a version number till they drop source in the tree again around November. Judging from the speculated improvements, it should be a major version number change.

My guess is 2.3 is correct, jumping a full revision number such as to 3.0 would generally indicate a partial or complete rewrite of the core code.

I'm still going with 3.0 and not 2.3....
I actually kinda wish that Google would slow down a little. I'm scared to buy a new phone if it's going to be outdated in three months when Google puts out something new. I guess that's why we donate to our developers!

Google has said that they will be slowing down after GingerBread(regardless of the version number). My assumption is they did not expect such rapid growth of the platform and users need a fully functional OS to make it worth buying into - A phone any more is not a quick purchase, there is a lot of investment in hardware and software. Where as with feature phones they where cheap(in comparison) and easily replaceable.
From what I remember seeing, the next update is to have some big changes making it most likely 3.0. All speculation though.
Personally I'm happy android has been updating quick. Keeps the phones newer fresher feeling longer and fixes problems quicker. I came from winmo and never got fixes and the roms bored me. Plus I really hated 6.5.
I'm holding out until December to upgrade and debate on new phone or used evo. I've been out of contract for 9 months now.

Gingerbread 2.3

Figured id start a thread about it and people can chime in on what they know and what they want to know. Id like for someone to provide a link to what the up coming features are going to be and when its going to be released. I heard that its going to come out on monday the 6th and some of the features might include some more lime green and a market with music that can be purchased and also some sort of supported video chat. Any truth to this would be cool but I can't confirm anything. I know verizon usually comes out with some kind of sheet to tell users what will be included and I haven't found it yet so if anyone has information that'd be nice to share with the people here on xda.

I highly doubt it will be out tomorrow. And even if it is out tomorrow, it will be on the Nexus one. You should know by now all the updates come out to the Nexus phones first. Obviously it might not be too long after that for us to get it but we've gotta wait for Google's star child first.

yeah plus MOTO will want to make some crappy build with "ninja blur" which will take forever since they only care about the droid x so we'll have to wait a while unless you're rooted. Ports of stock 2.3 should probably be out sometime in the few weeks after it is released for el nexus uno
Not sure about sources and such but:
http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1930297/tablet-designer-claims-android-23-release
They announced its release this morning along with the Nexus S
Subscribed
So I'm going to make a guess that getting Gingerbread onto the Droid2 is going to require a new kernel? In and of itself, Gingerbread uses a newer kernel than Froyo, and it seems like there are some significant improvements under the hood that may require kernel support. I suppose this could be verified by comparing the source code between the two releases.
So, barring someone hacking eFuse, I would guess that we aren't going to see Froyo until Motorola decides to release it. Hopefully I'm wrong here...

Not to be a douche but yea it is.
I really don't think it'll take too long for Gingerbread to come out. We've been running 2.2 for a while now. Other phones don't even have Froyo yet. I know they probably have to make it Blur compatible, but I really don't think it'll take too long to get.

Problem is that the new update adds support to things not changable withouth unlocking the bootloader so we are kind of screwed unless something has changed. Or Motorola actually does something worth while.

I really think Samsung does it on purpose. I've gone through so many scenarios as to why they are delaying FroYo for so long, and I just cannot reason it. I am certain it is on purpose. Why? That's the one million dollar question. Could it be to sell more Nexus S'? Could be. But no one knows for sure except Samsung...

Because Samsung never have to made products that needs long term commitmenets. They make TV, Monitors, and Flash Disks, and dumb phones which were all sales are final kind of product; as long as there are no large manufacturer defect, it's pretty much end of support - minus some lemons.
They did have the omnia series, but they develop the OS in house, but was also slow as hell to push out updates. That's the only counter argument I foresee.
Overall, Samsung is just very bad at software, kind of like Sony before PS3.

In addition to this, we really want the source code. THAT is when the real goodness begins. We can only do so much with the leaks because there's no source code.
All of this (delays, drama, crying etc.) reminds me of my Moment
The thing is, I believe most of us were expecting more from Samsung/Sprint this time around...
I, for one, will be selling my Epic as soon as the dual core stuff comes out and I DEFINITLY won't get another samsung product... might even ditch Sprint at this point as well..

People need to *****. That's all.
The frustration is that with this update I have hopes for new bells and whistles but also bug/software fixes. I'd like my gps to get a lock quicker. I'd like the keyboard to catch every key I press. I'm tired of having one of Sprint's finest phones and not the most current software available. This will probably be my last Samsung device. I'm not impressed and feel like I should be.
Source code buddy.
Probably cause these Froyo beta versions are not fully optimized like DI18 Eclair was on 2.1. DI18 was overall faster, smoother and more stable than dk28. The advantages of dk28 are the new features like flash, apis to sd, new available apps in the market, perfect working gps, etc.
My biggest frustration with dk28 is with how poorly it handles multitasking. Apps just don't want to run in the background.

The real question is why aren't you mad? You bought a top of the kind phone don't you think you deserve to of the line support? When companies mis manage customer support like sprint and samsung have with the epic, do you just smile and say thanks?
I really don't understand how anyone can not be upset that sprint and samsung are screwing their customers. Not to mention that the release of source code will make the developer roms even better.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
I got a solution, I don't care about the ota froyo update anymore. What if we all just ask samsung for a source code for the developers to work on here https://sales.liveperson.net/hc/491...43636279253049823-8107768404509335636K7444953
So what's the deal with the images showing instructions for the DL11 and the release date being today? Photoshop? Why would someone do that?
Most of the people crying about it are the fanboys who are realizing that Samsung is a terrible company when it comes for support of their products.
It doesn't matter if the source is released or not, the majority of the roms are a joke anyway, most "devs" here have no clue what the hell they are doing.

Pretty sure that's basically what I said. "virtually useless" = "lot of things won't work as it should". The usual suspects of GPS and Camera will be high on that list.
If people are happy with a system with very few native apps which is slow & unstable (ala the Nook "port"), then sure, go for it. Otherwise you're still going to be waiting for AOSP to drop, (which may be later today, but I'm not holding my breath), or for an official firmware to rip apart. Then someone needs to hack the hardware-specific drivers into life on the tab, might be a piece of cake if the 2.x source is friendly with the 3.0 libraries, someone more coding-minded would need to assess that one.
I'm all for someone hacking something together to have a play with to see what it looks like, I just hope people aren't expecting a release-quality port based off an SDK "demo".
