With the discontinuation of the HD2, and despite the fact I will retain the handset and make good use of it, my Free upgrade date is fast approaching....
Which handset appears to be the best handset on the market to rival our HD2s? The Desire HD looks a lovely piece of kit and the Incredible S, although slightly smaller than The HDs also looks good!
Any recommendations?

"Go 4 d Desire HD" > I recommended he considered purchasing the Desire HD.
"recommended it 2 my gf ova d hd2...she's x so interested in d multiple options available 2 d hd2 but wants d power of android & d same or better hardware specs as d hd2" > Based on her requirements, usage & Phone-dabbling level i recommended the Desire HD above the HD2.
Do u now understand ?
To be honest, I think they'll all run about the same. Along with all HTC's current phones they'll run excellently. It's all about which you prefer the look of tbh. I think the IncS and DHD have the exact same specs if the IncS has 712mb of RAM.

True m8....Hweva IMHO, d DHD has better hardware, is a native android device (yeah cuz since i went android, neva turning back 2 WinMo), has touch-based dedicated buttons (means d risk having d digitizer cum hardware problem is greatly reduced) , etc...I still love my HD2 though.

d = the, I am assuming!
I agree that the HD7 has the lack of Android capability, currently, and WinMo7 is currently very limiting, will be interesting to see what happens there after Mango... The only thing Spec-wise that the HD7 offers to me over the HD2 (But is still well lacking behind Incredible S/Desire HD) is the way they have set the speakers into the Handset so the sound is projected out through the screen side of the handset, so you don't have to cup the phone to watch a movie clip!
Desire HD and incredible S I think the main difference, is screen size and internal storage, both in favour of the HD...
Just an aside, does anybody know anything about the HTC EVO 3D...? Has the Chav'iest name for a handset ever, but at the same time it potentially looks an exciting handset, would like to know more details on it's internals though!
EDIT: one a little research, to be honest it was far from difficult... The Handset
is due to be launched this week! These are the reported/expected specs
• 4.3-inch 3D capacitive touchscreen with 960×540 pixels resolution!
• 1.2 GHz dual-core Snapdragon CPU
• Dual 5-megapixel rear cameras for recording 3D video at 720p — 2D
video is recorded at 1080p.
• 1.3-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls
• 4GB of internal memory, microSD expansion slot (8 GB card comes
inside the box).
• GPS, Bluetooth and “standard” sensors
• DNLA support and HDMI port – for beaming videos to the TV
• Dimensions: 5.0×2.6×0.48 inches
• Android 2.3
No news about the RAM as yet, but will surely be 768 MB or better... or
me a great sounding handset, and I'm not due my upgrade until August,
think I'll sit pretty and wait to see which UK carrier takes this handset
on... For me fingers crossed Vodafone

Supposedly the EVO has RAM that changes depending on how much of it you're using. Can't think of the correct term but something like that is supposedly what its going to have anyway. Seems weird.
I'm a phone enthusiast so I don't deal with contracts. I pay straight up. Rather that than being stuck in a contract. And if I want a new phone I'll most likely trade somebody.

Some recent unconnected bits of information on the web have got me thinking that sooner or later there will be another iteration of the Athena series, an x7520 if you will.
First, on Engadget/Engadgetmobile, there was the blog on
How would you change HTC's Advantage X7510?
http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/08/how-would-you-change-htcs-advantage-x7510/
Then there are the regular posts about new HTC projects with new code names, for instance, HTC QUAR100:
http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2008/09/08/the-htc-quar100-a-north-american-exclusive/
Then finally, even though it hasn't been announced, Samsung is now making 1.0 inch form factor SSD's, and they are not sata, but pata devices (like the 1.0 microdrives). The largest is 32gb, which trumps the x7510's 16gb:
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/productList.do?fmly_id=161
http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/productInfo.do?fmly_id=161&partnum=MCCOE32GZMPP
I'd wager that a successor will be announced around the CES show next year.
All I can say, is that it better have great video performance and the joystick back.
What do you think?
What do I think ???
I don't think there would be any replacement for the HTC Advantage. Why? It is not selling well because of their stupid decision to remove the buttons and joy stick control. Not to mention, the only thing they changed is the keyboard and flash memory. No provider wants to carry it. The only phone operator I read offering the X7510 is TMobile Germany. Even at the country of it's origin, it barely made news when released. The only thing that will save the X7510 at this point is if HTC gave it to phone operators at a very cheap price. Which I suggest they should do now rather than let it sit in their storage due to better models coming out with better specs.
I am sorry to admit this... but I think this is the end for our babies with 5 inch screens. Which I hope won't be the case. I believe a better move on their part is to update the HTC Universal.
I think you have some valid points.
Many of the comments on 'How you would change the x7510' on the Engadget thread mentioned lack of joystick and OK buttons. Major mistake on HTC's parts.
So really there are three options:
HTC abandons the format
HTC introduces one more model with 32GB SSD, joystick or not.
HTC introduces a similar form factor, but totally new design.
I believe that they will at least do the 32GB option, as they don't have to change any hardware.
I would prefer the following changes atleast.
1. More slimmer device.
2. Change the old PXA270 processor to PXA310.
3. Newer phones come with 256MB RAM and 512MB ROM.
Hopefully they will change those too in the new model.
4. Windows Mobile 7
6. Support 800*480 Resolution.
--Srini
Heres what I would improve:
1. Remove the buttons on the face, and make the screen larger (stretch in to the corners of the device. Put the removed buttons on the sides or top of the device.
2. Higher res screen 800x480 ?
3. Larger microdrive, 64GB atleast.
4. Full size SD-card lot, maybe even two.
5. Make the device slimmer.
6. Slide out keyboard (portrait).
7. Newer generation and faster CPU (800MHz ?) / GPU (NVidia ?) combo.
8. 300MB RAM (atleast)
9. 512MB ROM (atleast)
10. Better camera with atleast VGA @ 30 FPS recording.
11. Make a docking station for the device in portrait. With the headphone out and USB host in front and the rest on the back. Dont forget support to charge a second battery.
So what do you guys think ?
1. Put vibrate back in.
2. Change screen aspect ratio from 4:3 to 16:9 (would make it easier to hold like a phone and would give us full-page-width browsing, video)
3. Give us a private speaker so we don't have to carry BT all the time.
4. Put the buttons and joystick back.
5. Include chipset for WiMax.
Yeah what he said plus what I said makes it the almost perfect PDA.
there is something in the works that i know of but i dont know if u would consider this a athena successor. cant give details though.

nope. not any one of those. these devices the public doesnt know about.
Well then thats something to look forward to.
Nope the magic words "screen isn't as big" and I loose all interest.
The biggest appeal to me for the Athena is the 5 inch screen.
I would however like it slimmer and a full size sd slot.
With the joystick back, a slimmer unit and a full size sd slot it would be near the perfect device for me.
I don't think HTC will simply abandon Athena form factor. For one thing it looks that MIDs (Mobile Internet Devices) will be a popular thing next year and for me Athena is a true MID and for now the best MID.
So what I'm hoping for is that HTC will come up with a new MID device sometime in 2009, that could be a successor to Athena, hopefully with WM7 (I have a silly idea that WM7 will be released together with Win7 sometime in June/July) and with 5" WVGA screen, new faster CPU and more storage...

Pawel,
I know Blackstone is not quite a replacement for the 5 inch screen, but it has FM radio, and faster HSDPA speed. I'm quite keen to go for this. However, if there is something better in the pipeline, I might wait.
I like Blackstone's form factor, but was disappointed with its mere 3.8 inch screen. Of course there are also other disappointments such as the lack of joystick, tv-out, small built-in storage, but the biggest disappointment is the small size.
I hope the replacement model that you have been told retains the 5 inch screen, latest HSDPA, wimax, have embedded earpiece, and similar form factor as blackstone (ie slim and light). Am I likely to be disappointed?

What about the HTC 8290? If the specs are correct, it's like the Touch HD, except it's got WiMax and TV-out. The lack of TV-out on the Touch HD is a big disappointment to me. I would have bought the HD instantaneously had it had this feature. If the 8290 does have it, and has both WiMax and HSPA, it seems very attractive to me.
Regarding the Advantage, I believe they will keep the form factor because as stated above, MIDs are coming and the Advantage really is pocketable and light enough compared to many other MID offerings. If I were HTC I'd wait for WM 7, and probably use the Tegra APX2500 processor.

Pawel,
Thanks for your info. I guess I would go for Blackstone as an interim device while waiting for the ultimate Athena replacement. I thought I could live with a 4 inch (and 3.8 inch is close to that) screen, but after making up a prototype and played with it, I don't think the screen is big enough yet. May be 4.5 at the very minimum. I had played with the iPhone and just don't like the small screen. Too much zooming in and out when surfing the net and that drives me nut after a while.
Sigh... May be Athena as it is now is still the best, even when compared to Blackstone.

HTC Desire HD
Don't know if many of you heard but HTC have brought out an HD version of our Desires, here are some of the specs:
Android 2.2
4.3″ capacitive touchscreen
8 MP camera with 720p HD video capture
WiFi
HSDPA
GPS
Accelerometer
4 GB internal memory expandable via microSD card slot
so who feels swizzed! lol
wonder if some of the DEVs can port some of the features, in particular what makes the 720p
Isn't that just the 4G renamed for areas where 4G networks aren't available?

It works fine - apart from the relatively low framerate. I don't see how the Desire HDs firmware is going to help here, since it is likely it is linked to the radio firmware and/or the camera CCD, which will be different on the Desire HD.

It's a dev forum, so no place for these stuff here, I guess.
Anyway, what do you want to port ? WiFi ? HSDPA ? GPS ? Accelerometer ? Android 2.2 ? Hold on, I'll do it for you.
4GB internal memory ? 8MPixel camera ? 4.3 screen ? That seems a bit out of these devs skills. No offence to anyone.
720p works ok in most instances, you would have to replace the lens to see big difference.

supposedly Roufianos has worked on it though you can only record for about 2 or 3 mins max and then the screen gets too hot or something. his thread got locked because he was either being too vague and wasn't giving answers.
Maybe the occasion to grab new sofware from HTC able to record 720p video with a decent framerate ?
Wait and see...
What you're asking for is impossible.
Although anything over 800*480 is overkill on our phones because of the resolution,I'd much rather have developers try and enable 720p playback without lag / stuttering / jerking. That way I could enjoy my 720p vids without having to reencode to lower frame size.
After that, I'd welcome the idea of 720p video recording.
I wonder if you will need to lug a car battery around on your back and keep it plugged in like the EVO, or will you get more than an hour of battery life...

As long as it uses a compatible/similar processor, porting should be easy enough.
The framework and apps are portable, just move them to where they should be.
For the native libraries and apps it has to have a similar cpu, and it does have one.
Of course there are some libs that are Desire/Bravo-only and have to be used in the port.
What remains is kernel hacking. (Getting bluetooth to work, camcorder, etc)
Sounds possible, as long as there is someone willing to undertake this herculean task.
720p @ 30 FPS recording is smooth at Desire HD. I manged to get it drop down to 28'ish by shaking the phone and filming into bad lighting conditions, which would force the camera to re-focus.
Looks promising.
Desire HD launch : http://yfrog.com/5zdesirehdp
Is HTCSense.com coming for our "old" Desire?
Lets start a list of all the things we want to change on the DHD then we will mail it to HTC and they will change it. Right?
Here's what I want to change
1. I want the 12mp Camera with xenon flash and Carl Z. lens from the Nokia N8
2. HDMI port
Why would you want > MP?
This is a phone, not a camera. NOT the other way around.
You might eventually want > optical zoom.
Why would you want HDMI when you have DLNA?
As begin, I thought Desire is an Awesome Phone. but still got some concern.
1. I would reckon a dedicated button, for camera or another specific apps.
2. No face detection on the camera apps. even Galaxy S does.
3. havent seen the voice command feature on the specification.
4. no front cam and cannot make video call. It's really SAD for a high end mobile phone.

I think streaming with DLNA is much more comfortable, because there is no cable between tv and smartphone. Think about a 1m HDMI calbe to your 52" tv...

But something i would like if i had to change something would have to be a bigger battery and a mini USB instead of a micro USB... But thats about it!
Relistic and changes optical ball better camera
You don't want more MP you want a bigger sensor. This is all the fault of the big camera makers touting MP as the be all and end all to sell cameras.
My SLR is only 10MP and takes phenomenal images because the sensor is much much bigger than any phone on the market.

Only one..
The phone to be in flippin hand!!
Have dual core processor, maybe a tegra 2 or 3...
Have USB 3.0
Have HDMI, yes HDMI!!!, my tv and receiver have loads of them, and it's better to send things over HDMI than over DNLA... consume less battery, it's much faster, doesn't lag (only if your phone lags itself)
Better optics (don't need more Mpx, 5 or 6mpx is enough!!) and maybe optical zoom (digital zoom sucks!!!)
More internal storage (32GB at least!!!)
Maybe support for SDXC
Front Camera, yes we need 3G video calls (not that crap from Apple or ip video calls!!). I don't use it, but we never know when we may need it, in some case of emergency like a theft, kidnapping, natural disaster, etc... it can be very useful in those cases, you never know...
Im not really worried about camera quality... so for me:
- HDMI port (saves money, wouldnt have to buy DLNA adapter for telly)
- AMOLED screen (I no its 'over saturated' but it still looks good )
- To get an official gingerbread update (but then again, the devs here on xda will sort out a ROM for it anyway )
The smartphone makers will never release a phone that has verything, they wouldn`t have anything to release after a few months
For me, i would be happy with a phone that has:
- Se X10i battery (Li-Po, lasts even 4 days with moderate usage)
- SGS Screen (ya! SAMOLED with Gorilla Glass=nice! )
- DHD body (looks nice, no glossy plastic that atracts finger prints like magnet, as my SGS does)
- N8 camera (not because of MPs, but for the large sensor and for the audio quality of videos, i know, the sound is not from the camera )
- iphone 4 audio performance (i don`t believe i said iphone but i got to say it, it has a great sound quality)
That`s about it from what I can think of now.

Im almost 100% shure HTC will give this device that update :-D
Personally, I'd want:
- A battery that lasts at least 2 days without charge
- Gorilla Glass!
- HDMI

How many TVs actually use DLNA? I'd never heard of it until the Desire HD was released. I can't recall seeing any TV with DLNA, only HDMI.

Well yer your write it never was said that it wouldn't get gingerbread (which might not be 3.0...)
But then again, HTC haven't always been consistent with updates (*cough* HD2 *cough)
I prefer Android OS than Apple IOS, but HTC also prefer sells another Android phone than offering OS upgrade to the sold device. HTC like any company will not pay too much effort to upgrade Android OS to existing sold phone unless Google directly pull out any Android upgrade throughout the air and user has to leave any "SENSE addin" by rooting the HTC phone.

The body looks decent, but I wonder why the camera protrudes so much. It will look like a mini-condom if I end up putting it in my back pocket. That's not good for my ego.
The iPhone audio performance part of your list may be addressed in the DHD. I tried using some of the new audio settings in the new sense on my Desire, but none of them changed anything. I tested this using both UE SuperFi 5vi and Bose Bose in-ear headsets. No change at all so it may be something that's tied to the hardware.
So here's what I would add (btw I agree with most of what other posters have already listed):
Internal *fast* storage. This phone does record and play HD content after all. Having 32G fast internal storage *could* help to reduce a lot of the lag I experience when I start the Music app (as an example) and would help reduce the need to go out and purchase class 6 or better sd cards.
Stock software improvements which reliably use volume + and - as well as ff and rw in the wired headsets.

I'm not sure I follow. Do you mean that HTC doesn't provide updates to their phones or something else? I have a mix-bag experience with HTC on this. My Desire has been updated to 2.2, yet my Wildfire is still 2.1 (it's possible I missed an update, I only use that phone when I go out drinking because I won't care nearly as much about losing it).
I can't tell if you'e complaining about lack of updates in general or if it's the lag in your specific area or with your carrier.
Well the question is in the title...
Is it unwise to upgrade an HD2 for a Desire HD ? (Average Cost of upgrade is around 250 dollars at the moment)
It's almost the same phone on paper... Is it really that noticeable ?
Sure, why not?
1. Do you have $250 to spare?
2. Do you prefer to have a native android phone?
Also, this would be better fitted for the Android lounge
its ultra stupid , miscellaneous differences if ur not gaming , buy some clothes for urself or somthin for ur girl(cough android phone cough)
unwise... much worst, upgrade? better think downgrade, Desire it always be a Desire, your HD2 could be what ever you want... think wise.
Thats my advise.
desire hd uses the new snapdragon processer so i say go for it, i sure would.

processor is still 1ghz, difference in performance is most likely base on marginal differences between the architecture between the hd2 8250 and the new desire chip, most likely though, differences are very negligible.
I say just use the desire hd build for a while. m-deejay's one is quite good right now, especially with the hasterin 7.6 and the newest libhtc_ril_wrapper.so and save some money.

ok . i really think you should read my post as it might be really helpfull for you.
i also had an HD2. Tmobile version " even tho i dont live in US but i wanted the extra rom "
however, i sold it for Galaxy S. mainly for :
- i wanted better screen. the HD2 screen is perfect size. better than 4 inch screen the galaxy S " for my own taste anyway "
however. the HD2 colors are really lacking. did you try the roms available in the HD2 ? some of the widgets like google voice command. youtube, facebook etc really look like ****. the colors of the device as far as i have been told is 65k only.
even some of the wallpapers you see stupid haze of different colors in between the wallpaper {pics} because the HD2 color lacking wasnt able to mix the 2 colors in between.
the Desire HD. doesnt have this problem. the colors are in millions.
also. with all respect to HD2 devs out there. cooked rom is a cooked rom. it will never be perfect. and 3 mins booting every time you restart the phone is ****ty.
HD2 are for owners who want to try Android before they buy it.
but if you come to love an android OS. u will need a native machine to run one.
i do agree that 250$ is alot of money. and you would want to think twice before you spend this money.
to be honest between my HD2 and Galaxy S was only 130$ i paid . thats why i went for it.
but since your asking if its worth it or not. it means you really into mobile phones and new tech just like me and many others here. and when you see the Desire HD in your hand you wont resist.
go for whatever your heart desire man. life is too short not to have fun with things u like. its not like your gona die because u spent 250$ on something u like.
one more thing.
i think u should hold on buying Desire HD for while. it seems most units have a defective problems. sensor etc. whatever HTC issue a recall or release a software upgrade, you should wait.
Havent you seen the threads around the net waning ppl that the phone is malfunctioning, what is a phone when you can't properly call with it..

the performance difference is not marginal. its around 1.5 faster. dont let stupid 1Gig number fool you.
HTC G2 is 800Ghz and it destroy the nexus 1 and Desire 1 Ghz. why ?
however. the base of the android software development is nexus 1 "google actually give you a free nexus 1 phone to develop if you are a developer "
so with nexus 1 as a standard. it will be almost impossible to find a game / app that use Galaxy S, Desire HD, G2, whatever super phone available " right now "
so aside from less lagging while scrolling. lil faster fps during games, faster booting etc. he wont tell the difference.
its not a jump from G1 to Nexus1 .
I got offered a Desire HD on contract the other day, and I was tempted but declined (mainly as they wanted £35 a month and I'm not paying that much for a phone over two years).
I asked to play with one and it was nice software wise, I prefer the feel of my HD2 in my hands tho. I use the MDeeJay FroyoHD build and software wise I really couldn't see much difference.
I love the fact that I've got a 4.3" screen and if I were to upgrade to an Android native phone it would definitely be the DesHD, but not right now with so many possibilities coming up for the HD2. You won't be able to run WP7 or MeeGo on the DesHD.
As for the comment about the screen only being 65K colours... Microsoft themselves say it's a 262K colour screen here ok so it's not the 16M colours of the DesHD, but it works perfectly for me.

65k or 256 is not much of difference.

i am sorry but how can you say its perfect when half of the wallpapers look like **** ?
when you try to click on the voice command in the google widget and an ugly pop up of black get in ur face and tell u " hi say i am ugly "
or when you download the facebook widget and you see the white level is not the same with weird ugly difference in color ? or youtube ? or any gray solid wallpaper in the background ?
any picuter that is rendered using " millions " colors. will look bad at HD2.
thats a fact.
now. is it worth to upgrade? up to u. are you happy with ur phone ? up to u.
but dont compare both phones as if they are the same when they are not

It's perfect for me because 1: my wallpapers don't look **** (why do you have to resort to swearing to try and get your point across?) I have noticed one tiny part of banding on one wallpaper I made myself but it also colour bands on my laptop so no biggy, and 2: everything that I use my phone for (calling, texting, internet, market, games, DLNA, music, satnav, msn, appointment reminders, emails) work perfectly on my current build. I use my phone probably about 6 hours out of my working day and 2-3 when I'm at home if I'm not with my gf and I get no errors, no force-closes, no times when I think "I wish I'd never bothered". If you're not happy with Android on your HD2, don't run it and don't complain.
The things that don't work for me are:
Youtube: I have a laptop and a desktop for this so don't care that it doesn't work
Camera: That's not the devs fault and I own several digicams anyway
And that's it as far as I'm aware.

It really did sound like you were trying to slam the HD2 as the capable device it is. (I remember when the Magic came out, trust me that phone is perfect for no-one lol)
I honestly don't think it's a bad screen. Yes it has a minor limitation, every phone has something that's less than perfect. You learn to live with it as there are no perfect phones out there. I am being honest tho when I say I notice no banding on almost all wallpapers, pictures, games or anything else I use on my phone so it's never been an issue to me.
Anyway, think the OP wanted a pretty direct comparison between the two phones, which he's had a few of. Let's let someone else give their opinions.

Hey everyone (this is my first post although I've been following the forum for a couple of weeks now!)
Like most everyone I've been eagerly waiting for the Desire HD and getting impatient for the delay. I just watched a video comparing Desire HD and EVO 4g on engadget, in which the guy says the Desire HD 3G won't work in the US? I'm an absolute newbie and have never had an Android phone...can anyone confirm this? Thanks!
Here is the said video:

EDIT: I just found another similar thread that answered my question...wanted to delete my post but don't know how...well at least there's that engadget video ...

to be honest. i think only a retard would sell his Evo 4G to DHD. as i personally think the EVO 4G is superior to DHD in many ways its not even funny.
its kinda like the europen/asia/middle eastern people got a stupid low version of the EVO 4G.
1- no 4G
2- No second camera
3- no kick stand
4- no mini hdmi port
are they serious ?
and on top of all that, there are some hardware problems with the DHD it self that needs to be fixed " sensor, touch panel etc".
i think the DHD is a total fail. with all respect to everyone who bought it.
and i really hope it bombs hard to htc think twice before f****ng up their customers outside the US.
too bad the evo is CDMA only. i would have paid 700$ for it :/
4g hasn't even been released in many places outside of america, it's capable of handling hspa+ speeds..
I don't know anyone who actually uses the secondary camera. I've had it on my n95 and touch pro 2 and never missed it going onto my nexus one.
No hdmi port because we have dlna.
How is the desire hd a fail? It's been noted worldwide that it is one of the best, if not the best android phone out at the moment.

1- just because its the best in europe doesnt mean its the best world wide.
the evo 4 G destroys it and its an older phone. the DHD is stipped down version in terms of hardware " dont give me newer cpu crap that no one actually use. the android is running super fast on a hd2 . let alone evo "
2- just because you and others dont use the front facing camera doesnt mean its not important. most of my calls are video calls for your info. its more fun and i actually see the girl/guy i am talkin to before we decide to go out and have fun etc
3- dlna is nice. but i am sorry. not all HDtvs have dlna. including my 2 years old Sony Bravia . full hd. hdmi port. no dlna " as far as i know. nothing in the options when i checked "
should i go now and buy a new HDtv ? please. and many others are like this too.
sure the HDMI output is NOT a standard on Mobiles. but the EVO has it. why on earth they took it off from DHD. they are friggin charging the same price for evo as dhd. why should i be ok with the dumped version ?
i am sorry you are ok with the dhd. i hope u have fun with it. but there is no way in hell i am going to let htc get my money on this.
they should have a released a superior phone than Evo considering the evo is old now. but no. we get a worst version for the same price. and on top of that, it has some hardware problems.
oh yeah no **** off
4- the Evo is CDMA only. so its not released any where outside the US. and its sprint exclusive too. so even if i import it. it wont work
How about a newer gpu? I couldn't run asphalt on my nexus one smoothly (it ran the same chipset as the evo) but it runs just fine on my desire hd. I suppose the bump up in inbuilt memory as well as the increase in ram means it is still stripped down hardware wise? It's a 50% increase in both cases.
Do you really walk down the street while your video calling? People who video call in public are ignorant lol don't you use facebook to see who you are going to date?
DLNA is standard for most tv's today, if you don't have a compatible t.v. for dlna then use a ps3, xbox 360 or a computer to stream it. If you're going to watch something off of a t.v. you're more likely to stream over dlna than carry a cord around with you. Who watches stuff off of their phones anyway, get apple or google tv if your serious about your media
We have an updated chipset, what more could you want?
Sure people talk about the gpu and cpu improvements but it also brings support for more video codecs (we can play divx natively whereas the old snapdragon can't), uses less power and has the 8th generation built in gps engine (its a lot quicker to lock on). Not to mention speeds of up to 14.4mbps HSPA+. "4g" that you are referring to barely reaches 3mbps for most people in america. All of these features are things people use on a daily basis.
You sir are crazy to prefer the evo over the dhd

sure i can use my DLNA on ps3 or my 360. but the idea of mini hdmi output was if u want to watch at your friends house. why would i plug my mobile to tv if i am at home already and can plug my external hard disk or laptop ?
also, why we are arguing about this? EVO has hdmi output. DHD doesnt. EVO win. period. whatever u will ever use it or not. its there for you if you ever did.
same thing for front cam. 1 day you might be kinky and ur at your work. u call ur gf at home and tell her to show u her ass so u can rub 1 in the bathroom office. the cam is there she can use it lol

See when people try to use the kickstand as a valid point for how the EVO is a better phone, you just realise that they are clutching at straws.
Front facing cameras have been available on phone in Europe for near enough 6-7 years, times I or anyone else I know have used one = Zero
The "4G" argument, fair does the US has WiMAX, but it is not fully available all over the US.
The kickstand, come on. Never have I ever thought to myself, know what, I wish my phone had a kickstand so I could watch stuff a little easier.
The DHD has an upgraded CPU and GPU, that right now might not have many more advantages over the EVO, but in the future it will do. When the OS becomes more demanding, the older first generation of Snapdragon devices will become less supported officially for updates etc. That coupled with 256mb more RAM backs that up.
The HDMI port is a bit of a bummer, but for me it is hardly a deal breaker. It would be nice to have, but I can just stream to my PS3 or my TV wirelessly, seems like a fair trade off. Why go digging around the back of my tv which is a cable jungle when I can just do it through wireless?
Anyone who says that the lack of front camera or kickstand is a deal breaker is obviously either a total idiot who just wants more more more regardless of how much they will use it, or is just a spec junkie who wants to brag or look cool online.
The vast majority of phones out there dont have a kickstand or a front facing camera or HDMI out, does that make them bad phones, not at all. It is only recently that people have became fixated by such things, to the point where they are fooling themselves into believing that they matter.
Just my thoughts. To me the DHD is the next step up. I would say it's personal choice, but really the tech is much better with the DHD. I'm in the states, and am much happier with the DHD (even on 2G only. I'm always by wi-fi, so it doesn't matter) than I would be with the Evo. All the things the DHD can do blows the Evo out of the water. Maybe it is just me, but like one poster pointed out, some of the things the DHD can do can't be matched by the Evo. Plus Evo is Sprint only, and I'm on T-Mobile, and plan to stay here. There is no other 4.3 Android for T-Mobile (not that I would care since the DHD rules the world).

1. I'm sorry but the DHD actually has faster hardware than the EVO, end of discussion.
2. I have NEVER seen anyone use a front facing camera on a phone. Why would HTC include one if 90% don't want/need it? It's like demanding a 6,3mm jack on the phone because a couple poor guys have headphones that use a 6,3mm jack even though 95% of people use 3,5mm.
3. A lot of new TV's do have DLNA even though your cheap Bravia doesn't. Again, seriously. How often do you use a HDMI output? Again, I have never seen anyone use it.
Why are you even comparing DHD to the EVO when they are not even intedended to be sold on the same continents for god sake. Besides Android is way better imo than WM which I believe the EVO has. Oh and no, it doesn't have hardware problems except for the first batch of phones, so no, you can't generalize that "the DHD has hardware problems"..
PS. Learn to write for God's sake.
All i see is f"""king stupid replies about " i dont use it so its not important" crap.
None is even semi smart with decent iq to know that the US got more hardware extras for their buck than the rest of the world. Seriously
Oh and now evo has WM....
I give up. I will bail out of this thread. If i read more of this **** my iq is gona drop
More hardware extras for their buck? So let me get this straight, you would rather have a kickstand than a faster CPU/GPU combo?! You would rather have a front facing camera than an extra 256mb of RAM?! That's pretty sad tbh. The hdmi output requires a cable to be bought. The DLNA doesn't need anything to be bought unless you have an old tv in which case you will be able to buy the HTC media link.
So let's recap, you would rather NOT have an upgraded CPU, upgraded GPU, 50% more RAM, but as long as you have a kickstand and front facing camera that's better. LOL!!

the DHD is simply a better phone than the EVO. End of story. Anyone trying to claim that the kickstand and FFC make the EVO better than the DHD are fooling themselves.
Sorry i just couldnt stop myself from doing this>

More hardware extras for their buck? So let me get this straight, you would rather have a kickstand than a faster CPU/GPU combo?! You would rather have a front facing camera than an extra 256mb of RAM?! That's pretty sad tbh. The hdmi output requires a cable to be bought. The DLNA doesn't need anything to be bought unless you have an old tv in which case you will be able to buy the HTC media link.
So let's recap, you would rather NOT have an upgraded CPU, upgraded GPU, 50% more RAM, but as long as you have a kickstand and front facing camera that's better. LOL!!

FTW!

1- just because its the best in europe doesnt mean its the best world wide.
the evo 4 G destroys it and its an older phone. the DHD is stipped down version in terms of hardware " dont give me newer cpu crap that no one actually use. the android is running super fast on a hd2 . let alone evo "

Right...it destroys it? Desire HD in bold; Evo 4g in normal:
Display Type: LCD 16M colors | TFT 65K colors
Internal Memory: 1.5GB, 768MB Ram | 1GB, 512MB Ram
WiFi: B/G/N + DNLA | B/G
CPU: QSD8255 (45nm) | QSD8650
If you knew your stuff you would realise the new Snapdragons are actually smaller meaning less battery usage.
just because you and others dont use the front facing camera doesnt mean its not important. most of my calls are video calls for your info. its more fun and i actually see the girl/guy i am talkin to before we decide to go out and have fun etc

Do you do phone dating or something? I know what my friends look like and if I'm going to go out and see them I'm not going to video call them. If I want to video call, i'll use Skype for free. PS. Most people haven't got a front facing camera, don't want to, or having got the connection.

DNLA is moving forward, quickly. Don't have DNLA on your TV? Don't be a tool and buy a new TV. Use your common sense and go buy the cable to connect the Desire HD to the TV. Its about 1/1000th the price of a TV.
sure the HDMI output is NOT a standard on Mobiles. but the EVO has it. why on earth they took it off from DHD. they are friggin charging the same price for evo as dhd. why should i be ok with the dumped version ?

See above..
they should have a released a superior phone than Evo considering the evo is old now. but no. we get a worst version for the same price. and on top of that, it has some hardware problems.
oh yeah no **** off
4- the Evo is CDMA only. so its not released any where outside the US. and its sprint exclusive too. so even if i import it. it wont work

I think by now you should realise that the DHD is a much better phone than the Evo. Yeah, the Evo is good - but the DHD pushes the boundaries a little further.
Technology can only go so far at times. You'll be back in a few months moaning how the Desire HD is better than the Dual Core HTC's because the battery life is shocking

Based on your writings I doubt your IQ can go any lower than what it already is.
Touch pro 2 is the best phone!!
...
Seriously, I would defend my phone if I had that one. NOw my touch pro 2 is broken and I ordered the DHD.
There is a lot of competition out there, not only the EVO 4G.
It's just what you prefer. Design?, the evo 4g probably wins. Inner hardware?, the dhd wins. The 4g has more outer hardware: kickstand, 2nd camera, etc.
So it does have more features. But then again, maybe it doesn't because HTC is comming with a lot of new features by software.
It's just what you like the most. When you only think of the phone design, the 4g wins. But then a lot of phones in the past were designed even better (touch pro 2 (A)) Fact is, the DHD has more power under the hood what makes it last a little longer.
Everyone uses their phone diffrently, so for the people who use the kickstand and front camera, go with the EVO 4g. But most people do not really use it, so the DHD probably is the better choice because it will last longer in the future.
The quality of a phone isn't just decided by strenght or just by design, but also the new technology. That's why a newer phone is almost always better then an old one.
in this case, there isn't really a winner.
