Everywhere I look, I see people bashing Sense for being so bloated, so limited, etc. Where is the love? I have been using the Fresh ROM (which by the way, has the best battery life of any other ROM I have tried) and Myn's 2.2 ROM for the most part since getting my EVO on launch day. I have tried others, but kept coming back to them. I couldn't quite pinpoint it. It wasn't just the stability, the fluidity, it was the launcher and its widgets.
Sure, Sense can be a bit limited. But there are some tweaks around that can get you by such as 4x5 Rosie icons, etc.
I don't care what anyone says, Sense has the best widgets for Android hands down. It isn't even close.
I'm currently trying out Vaelpak and I quite enjoy the freedom I have in customizing it. But the widgets for Launcher Pro are just lacking. I invested in the LP+ to get the calendar widget that resembles Sense but that too isn't as good. The clock/weather widget has even a bigger disparity. Fancy/Beautiful widgets don't come close. I'm not even going to get into FriendStream and People.
I mean, LP+ doesn't even have a simple E-mail icon with an unread mail counter? This is basic and should be the first widget to be included with a launcher. Shame on them.
I do like some of the transition animations from LP+, but I know I'll get over that in a week.
All in all, thank you HTC for investing time and attention to detail in your software as much as you do your hardware.
XoXo
I think my only major problem with sense at this point is the broken bluetooth. Get a wiimote working on sense, and I probably would stick with Fresh. Until then, it's CM for me.
I agree otherwise...it doesn't get the credit it deserves. It runs circles around touchwiz

A drop of Chuck Norris's semen was placed on Android OS. We now have CyanogenMod.
I love Sense
Stock Android's Browser is pretty bad
and so is the stock gallery (why is it so unorganized and takes forever to load a freakin picture)
Sense gallery is neat, organized and loads quickly.
Here is my take;
Sense looks more polished
AOSP looks just "cooler"
I constantly switch between cm7 and stock turbo. They both have there advantages that make them worth having nand backups for.
Op is right, sense is under appreciated and unfairly called slow. The stock turbo rom ricsism put together (mikfroyo and myn too) are just as smooth as cm7. I've even noticed better battery life with the sense rom. But in terms of keyboard, and browser speed, cm7 takes the cake.
My 2 cents
I hate the way Sense is setup, I don't mind the launcher but that's it.
I love Sense, except:
1. You can't customize it (colors/themes) without using a custom ROM
2. The Sense messaging app on the Evo2.2 is SLOW as crap, laggy when you're scrolling and such. That's enough to make me not want to use it.
3. Battery life sucks. I'm at 88% at 8 hours unplugged right now, CM7 with Savaged-Zen kernel.

1. Check out Myn's 2.2 (one of the many themed Sense ROMs out there)
2. Check out Hancent SMS (who uses the stock messaging app?!)
3. Check out Fresh ROM 3.5.0.1 (Best battery life... period!)
The sense is a hog. If you get rid of the bloatware from sprint you are sill left with aroun 350mb vs a AOSP that will give you 408mb. Now of course it fuctions better but with the DEV that I have seen on this sight that will not be the issue in the long run.

Every aftermarket clock widget that tries to look like sense has awful, low res text in the flip clock boxes. That clock looks like ass. This is the sense clock, it's beautiful:
That being said, I run an AOSP rom because I like customization. It took me THREE MONTHS just to decide that the widgets were BARELY not worth it. HTC makes such gorgeous widgets, I just wish it was a little more open. MAN that HTC clock is lovely. FancyWidget and BeautifulWidgets large clocks look like TRASH by comparison.
However, the beautiful widgets smaller home weather/clock widget looks nice (this is my screen):
(not pretending my desktop is the fairest of them all, just saying... aftermarket clocks always look like ****)
I feel that sense makes the phone what it is.

personally i like the look of sense but it seems to kill the battery and slow the phone down, also chews up ram. i actually don't mind running vanilla with a droid or nexus themed launcher. im hoping when we do get the official 2.1 some of the devs here will not include sense in their roms.
so do you run sense or not?
I like vanilla android.. (darkstar theme) but currently using helix launcher..with weather widgets donate.. better cut for icons.. I do like sense.. but agree i think it does chew up ram and slow the phone down alot worse then my combo above.
I run Sense..................
havent ran sense since darchstar v1
I like Sense.
Sence is the reason i bought the Hero and not the Moment.
I like Sense, despite any performance drains. It's the main reason that I got a Hero.
But my last phone was a Touch Diamond, and the Hero is pretty much a Diamond with android; at least in a general form-factor/interface sense.
Sense was one reason I got this phone over the moment, and I only heard bad review about the moment.
I general don't use sense. I like the music app for it and the lockscreen, but thats about it.
Waiting for v2 of darchdroid to be a daily then i ditch legend again

Exactly, I bought the Hero for Sense UI.
I bought ther Hero because of Sense UI. I wonder why people got the Hero if the moment is basically the same without sense. Could be because the styling is better, IMO. I just like the look of sense.
To each, his own.
However with all the apps out there you can almost get vanilla to look like sense. But, the setup I have on my phone it's pretty damn quick. Every once in a while there is a quirk here or there, but overall I fell it is better.

kinda pointless as every current winmo rom has sense anyways, it's not just android specific now. i bought the hero because it's android, i hated winmo and of course the android market is pure win! the hero without sense is super fast.
Sense is nice with all the widgets, but it bogs the hell out of a phone that already is stingy on RAM to begin with... honestly i don't use all that social network ingtegrated Sense stuff which is HTC's claim to fame for Sense cuz it's easier for me just to get on the mobile version of the website nd view everything from there. Nd like someone else said, vanilla can be practically customized to like almost like Sense so the looks definitely don't woo me. Also remember Sense is the reason why we don't have 2.1 yet... i wish they would release the vanilla version for those who chose to run it instead.
I've had the moment and the the hero now, i prefer the hero, but use helix. seems a bit faster and i like the fact the home screen rotates. Hell with swype ya dont even need a keyboard anymore.

I think you somehow managed to completely miss my point. Please attempt to improve your reading comprehension skills, thank you.
I have never had that bad of a problem with lag besides the stock rom. Once you put on almost any custom rom most if not all of the issues are gone. I got the phone for sense and never turn it off.
I use Sense
Partially because I really like the look over stock boring Android, I mean really, it looks like early linux gui's or old versions of windows, boxy and plain. I also am a salesman by profession right now, I have to sell the silly thing, and coming up this summer, I will hopefully be selling the Evo too, which I'm quite excited about.
I normally would be one to trim everything for speed. I don't run ANY of the 'windows xp look' stuff on my XP based laptop because its too slow, I shut off most of the eye-candy in Linux because its too slow, but on a phone.. I kinda like it to look nice, the HTC widgets are downright schmexy.
I use sense, because its much sleeker to demo for a customer, and because it is smooth enough (on custom ROM's at least...) and visually appealing enough to use on a daily basis.
I dont use sense because it doesnt seem to like JIT at all. Nothing htc likes it.
I was thinking, since HTC overlays android with Sense, What's the point of us getting 2.3? Except the AOSP roms. Shouldn't we just be more excited for the new sense to come besides 2.3?
From what I understand, the 2.3 update is more under the hood than aesthetic... So while it'll look the same (save for a few animations, like the CRT outro), you'll get marginally better performance out of everything. The menus might look a little cleaner but you're right, there isn't going to be a lot that you'll be able to SEE in the update.
That said, your Android experience will be a little better. Faster processing, hopefully better battery life, etc. That's the stuff you should look forward to.
I just want the new HTC Sense.

I wasn't all that impressed when we got the update to 2.2. I guess the build up before release had me thinking that it was going to be a lot different than it turned out to be. That said, now that I have got used to the new features in 2.2, their is no way I could go back to 2.1. I have a hunch that the 2.3 experience will be the same.
Well, you have to consider that we have HTC Sense UI to contend with. I'm sure if you ask Nexus One users (running AOSP and not bogged down by manufacturers), they'll most definitely tell you a different story. My friends with the N1 think 2.2 is great since their phones fly now (literally...jk). I think one of them said he gets like 35ish MFLOPS on linpack compared to only around 7 on 2.1 before. Anyways, hardware limits aside, just like 2.2 brought Flash-support, battery optimization, and few other improvements...I'm sure Gingerbread 2.3 will bring some excitement to the table. Don't knock it yet.

if you install 2.3 gingerbread you will not have senseUI any longer as Google is doing the same thing that Microsoft and Apple are now doing, not allowing any third party overlays. If you want to keep senseUI then stick with 2.2 or wait for someone to jailbreak 2.3 and void your warranty. I plan to install 2.3 when it is available but will miss senseUI. But Google wants 2.3 and above to be a premium device with a consistent user interface experience. Currently their are several different user experiences which give different experiences to the same user. This needs to stop. Look at Apple and MS with Windows Phone 7. If an Android user picks up one phone they should be able to pick up any other android phone and be able to use it with out having to learn a different interface such as TouchWIZ or SenseUI. Granted I love SenseUI but I believe in what Google is doing by uniting them. This is also being done to stop fragmentation as well.
Samsung TouchWIZ
HTC SENSEUI
Launcher 2.x for Android 2.1+
As you can see their is no common user interface, which does not give a common user expierence like Apple does. And no i do not love apple.

Personally, I think that HTC will simply shift their focus slightly. Unstead of having a full UI overlay, they may have device proprietary widgets to continue the sense feel on stock android shell.

I've searched the other forums and read through them; however, I want a more updated take, especially people using the HTC Evo, which do you prefer and why?
Are the speeds that much better? Do you miss the sense widgets? Did you eventually adjust or did you have that feeling in the back of your rom that it wasn't the same?
Thanks in advance!
I prefer Launcher Pro, don't miss the sense widgets, just the flip clock.
I like some of the built in aspects of sense, the better integration with Facebook pics, and so forth (missing that since I have rooted and installed Deck's ROM..Facebook App just doesn't seem as nice in syncing them).
However for interface, Launcher Pro has been my toy of choice for at least 9 months.
I used launcher pro exclusively on all Rom.
Until I loaded a sense 3.0 rom. That interface is just so nice.

Smoother? Not the case with the ROM i use. The carousel for home pages and the albums is perfect. I'm still not over spinning it just for the heck of it

Yeah I think people are comparing LP plus to sense 2 or 2.1 without having actually installed a 3.0 rom.
Look at what SilverZero said...how can Sense 3.0 be a distant memory? Good working roms have only been out for a little over a month.
If you like it and it ain't broke don't fix it. But this thread is sounding a little fanboy-ish when people haven't actually used both.

Minus the bugs in the MIUI rom right now (audio, landscape mirroring) why do people like CM7 better than MIUI? I have backups of both, but keep going back to MIUI because of the look & feel. It feels like one whole picture, rather than a bunch of different pieces of things brought together. To me, it's important that my apps have a singular look & feel.
What are other perspectives, why do you guys like CM7 more than MIUI? I'm just interested in what features people like most in their ROM, because I can't seem to shake sticking to MIUI, including the current bugs, rather than booting up some CM7.

Fair enough
The look and feel of iOS (and the locked down nature) was why i left apple in the first place. I dont want my phone to resemble that. I've yet to even try MIUI, but sheerly on looks, i never will.
I personally don't like the look of MIUI, I'm not quite sure how to describe it, bubbly? I like CM7 mainly because I just like the stock(ish) android look. Perhaps others feel this way as well.
Miui is the most customizable rom out there. Cm7 is fast but its bare bones and effing ugly. Miui is popular because its reeeally good looking. It looks like apple, but you can make it look like anything you want. So much theme support its stupid .

I can't buy any argument based on "I don't like how it looks." You have far more control over the way your phone looks with MIUI than with CM7 or any other ROM. You can make it look just like CM7 if you want.
My phone is actually faster with MIUI than with CM7 and it's gorgeous. The current build for the Atrix is suffering from some audio problems but I still can't bring myself to flash anything else or even change the background because it's so perfect.
As a recovering flashaholic, that's saying a lot.

Hows battery life for you on alpha 4?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
I've never noticed a huge battery difference from ROM to ROM, unless I flashed a seriously overclocked kernel with it. So, the battery life is pretty much the same as always, which was never fantastic, but can be extended with certain apps and practices.
Edit: Replied to the wrong thing.
But I don't like MIUI. I tried it on the Desire, I tried it on the Atrix. It just 'feels' wrong, I don't like how stuff is organised and where various toggles have been moved to. Odd, I know - especially since I quite like using iOS (I just loathe Apple and the fragility of the iPhone 4/4S design.)
I personally prefer MIUI over CM7 any day and I used to be a Cyanogen fanboy but then I gave MIUI a try and I couldn't believe how many useful features it had plus it runs very smooth smoother than cyanogen ever did.
I really like MIUI, but I just like stock ics better.
I freaking Love CM7, and CM9 for that matter. Cyanogenmod is just so blazing fast, and looks pretty no matter what you do to it. I dont HATE Miui, but I have some serious ADD, and everything about it kinda bugs me. If we're just talking looks, The amount of customizables is nice, but it never feels quite perfect for me. CM7 and 9 both look minimalistic and pretty to me, and Miui feels like im running across a 4 way highway when Im theming it. Its fast enough to compare to Cyanogenmod for me, but the feel of cm pushes it to the top. But you know, Anything is better than effing Blur.
I have had better experience with CM7 and battery life than MIUI. I personally stick with whatever rom gives me the best battery life.

Theres no phone thats 4G(!), since 4G is WiMax(dl rate bigger than 100mbps in a mobile device), and we only have LTE on our phones.

Samsung's own user interface was changed by the time. If you have a Touchwiz UX phone running Jelly Bean, you can find something, a beta screenshot of how was the Touchwiz UX UI when was in beta stage:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Which is different from this one:
For me, the beta version was much better than the final one. You can find it at SecMms.apk/res/drawable-xhdpi. Maybe there's some other screenshots hidden in other Samsung Apps.
The screenshot maybe was took from an S3 Prototype by the resolution (1280x720) [1230x720 without the Statusbar] and because the leaked prototype has a pretty much similar ui:
So, what do you think? Who its better for you?
They're both awful compared to AOSP, but the beta is LESS awful
The beta one looks cool.

I can't understand people who think AOSP actually looks good. It looks like some nerdy high school kids with no sense of style made it. Blue status icons, are you kidding me? I can understand users preferring the advantages AOSP offers, but design isn't one of them. Both TW and Sense are superior in terms of design by a mile.
BTW, also on the list of the worst of the worst has to be the Android name and also the Droid series by Motorola. Both are horrible and are targeted to geeks still playing with their Transformers.

It's subjective. I disagree with everything you say. Touchwiz and sense are too "coloured". As a design buff, I much prefer AOSP. I prefer the regimented 1 colour background, 1 colour Icon. Anything else looks messy to me. Personally since I love pure black and blue is my favourite colour, AOSP looks gorgeous too me (once you get rid of the holo crap). Better than those Touchwiz and sense UI's that I used to draw myself with crayons back in the early 80's.
But design is subjective and you have to realise that. You will never understand why someone feels the complete opposite as you about something because you are not them.
Even back when I ran touchwiz roms, they HAD to be themed AOSP. I don't think there is anything geeky about slick design and uniformed colours.
That said, i run a similar design on Linux, because I do not like multicoloured icon sets.
The beta looks far better than the shameful end result. AOSP looks nice, but Sense beats all.

yeah, that beta is no hot stuff but looks better than what we got

We have plenty of guys like that over at Swedroid. They completely abhor vanilla.

I much prefer 4.x AOSP to 2.3 AOSP. The blue is a much better colour scheme than the green/black that was on gingerbread.
In regards to AOSP generally, I prefer the look to TW. It might lack functionality (which is why Cyanogenmod and other aosp alternatives exist) compared to TW and later editions of Sense, but I do prefer the interface

I agree.
Oh hang on, isn't touchwiz using that gingerbread scheme now?

Is it off-topic to pull in a third alternative for further comparison??
Anywho, the beta do look better imo, than the final product.
I do agree with RootSU though, I also find TW to be too cartoonish and colorful, and really prefer the more simplistic colorscheme of AOSP - the dark holo theme that is. The light version doesn't fit my taste either

well yes, the topic turned to TW vs. AOSP comparison (which every Samsung subforum has 100's of it). The actual topic is about the pre-release theme which is found in APKs
