I'm making this post because I need some assistance...I've already searched around this forum for a few days but it seems like I may be the only one with this issue...
I got the phone a few days ago, from day one I noticed I've been having network issues. By that I mean every time I try to use any apps that require data such as facebook, youtube, instagram, chrome, google now, and especially speedtest, my network would die for about 10 seconds as it reconnects.
All bars drop, I get the message of "network unavailable", and slowly edge speeds come back, followed by hspa.
I have tested this throughout all parts of Los Angeles already.
I have also replaced the micro sim card twice.
I also hard reset the phone back to stock.
Also reset the APN settings.
Two other people I know of in the area, their Nexus 4's work perfectly fine.
I'm all out of options, the T-Mobile tech support team is also out of options, i was recommended to send it back to Google but I don't want to do that unless it's absolutely necessary as a last resort.
I was just wondering if anyone is familiar with this issue or any suggestions as to what to do?
Thanks so much

Seems like a similar problem to what I'm having. I always just randomly lose reception. Reception is already really really bad for me, but it seems like it's whenever I pick up the phone the network goes out. It's really getting on my nerves. Most places in my house I get no reception. But it's the weirdest thing that happens. I can be sitting on the couch using my phone, and have no bars. But then I set the phone down on the couch to go grab something from the fridge and when I come back I'll have received a text message and I'll have like 2 bars! But then the second I pick the phone back up reception goes out again.
This has been going on for the last month for me, and it's especially bad at work but almost nowhere else.
I think (though I have no concrete evidence) that it's because of their ongoing 1900mhz refarm.
Someone should call tmo and find out.

yep..i'm starting to feel like it's 100% hardware related to the antenna. might have to contact google and see what's up. hopefully if i send it back they won't take a month to replace it haha
Sounds like a faulty antenna to me :\

I've experienced these problems on AT&T (MEdia Net, not DataPro) as well. It happens regardless of how good my signal is. I haven't experienced the other problems you are a time else mentioned.
On the NPR app, it results in some sort of error such that I have to reboot to get the NPR app working again. The app doesn't say something has gone wrong, but it won't load any audio and will hang after waiting.
The signal drops, then picks up again and goes straight to HSPA+:15. This happens to me on the road quite often and I just switch to onboard music rather than fiddling with my phone while driving. The issue has occurred a few times while in Maps, but thankfully I knew how to get back from where I navigated to.
EDIT: Just want to clarify to the poster below me that this occurs REGARDLESS of how good my signal is. It happens when I have better than -50 dBm (I think -70 gets full bars, although I've even seen full bars at -90!) so it can't just be a low signal issue.
I'm pretty sure this happens to all nexus 4s unfortunately. Anyways that is in a poor connection area had this happen.
This happens to me at home. Bounces from 0 to 3 bars constantly. But if I'm outside in an area with strong signal I never go below 3 bars no matter how I hold it.

Ive been having the same problems with my n4 in tmob. I get a lot of 3g and sometimes i get no bars. I hope its not a hardware issue. Im in many miami and ive seen a couple of threads about this

I don't think it's an antenna issue. It was happening on my Galaxy Nexus for a few weeks up until I got the Nexus 4, and prior to that I *never* experienced total signal loss like this.

The first couple weeks I had the N4, I wasn't experiencing any connection issues, but for some weird reason they started last week. It wasn't even fresh after I flashed a new ROM. I think perhaps it's a network issue that is somehow specific to our unique phone and plan combinations and our areas. Anyone using AT&T's MEdia Net plan in Georgia?
I think you guys may have gotten my issue a bit confused, what I'm trying to say is my signal fluctuates depending on location like normal, however only when I use apps that are solely dependent on internet connection, my entire network goes down.

Yeah that's what I'm encountering as well. I wonder what these other guys are talking about?
My network goes down regardless of whether I'm doing anything with the phone or not. I could have just the screen on and it'll be lying on the table and I'll see it go from 2 bars to empty and eventually back.
It's especially bad at work where I have terrible signal to begin with.
Forgot to add.. my coworker with an HTC 8x and another with a Galaxy Nexus are getting the same issues.
So, it's a network problem for sure. I'll post this on the tmo forums tomorrow and see if I can get any official word on the matter.

This exact thing happens to me using straight talk att Sim.. Right now, full bars to zero, then back. Sometimes it jumps to roaming, and seems to get "stuck" and I need to turn airplane mode on/off to fix it

I experienced something similar on my N4 and called T-Mobile tech support. They had me power off my phone and they "reprovisioned" or "reprogrammed" my data connection or something like that. It's been better since then.
Posted on t-mo forums, let's see if they can be of any help.

Please add on to the linked thread, the more attention we get on this issue the faster we'll get a solution, or at least an idea of what is causing it.

last night after midnight my phone suddenly couldn't get a signal from t-mobile. i thought i screwed it up, but then i took the sim and put it in my galaxy nexus and it had the same issue. so i went to bed and in the morning it was working fine. i suspect t-mobile was doing stuff to their network in my area
Having the exact same problem today in Manhattan near Bryant Park. Can't keep a stable signal at all and data is connecting only in bursts. Hopefully this will be fixed soon or I'll have to look for other options than Tmo and my N4

I've noticed that the S4 seems to have very poor if not disappointing Signal Strength. This is Firmware independent as I have had the same results on 100% stock firmware, rooted stock firmware, and CM10.1.
At home I get HSPA+ service only via AT&T. On my iPhone 3G, 4, and 4S I used to get 3 or 4 bars, occasionally 2 bars of service in my room on a nightstand where I leave my phone at night. In fact I'd get pretty much 3 or 4 bars in the entire house. With the S4 I'm going between 0 bars, no service, and 1 bar. Occasionally I will manage to get 2 bars.
Likewise, in another area over the weekend I was going from no service to 1 bar of EDGE (2G service!) and occasionally 1 bar of HSPA+ where friends who also had AT&T with iPhone4's were getting 2 bars of HSPA+ 3G. Another friend with iphone5 and AT&T actually was getting 2-3 bars of LTE.
Anyone experiencing similar woes and disappointing service? If so, any way to improve it?

I have noticed the same disappointing service from AT&T. I moved from Verizon to AT&T due to a work contract change. I went from 4G LTE to full bars of EDGE. This is pretty much unacceptable but there is nothing I can do about it. During the days I can manage to get 4G HSPA+ but its still not even close to what LTE was. Driving down some major highways I still drop calls on AT&T. Also up north at my cottage I can get no bars and with verizon (droid razr maxx) I could get 3 out of 5 bars and 3G coverage. AT&T does not even come near to what Verizon has been doing. They really need to step up their game...

Guys, you are talking about two different issues.
The OP complains that his SGS4 gets fewer bars than his iPhone (I assume on same provider). I would not judge signal strength this way. 4 bars on iPhone could be equal to 1 bar on SGS4 in terms of pure measured signal strength. Go to system menus on both phones to check the signal strength value. Do not just compare the number of bars.
Fosser2 - you are in general complaining about AT&T. Yes AT&T sucks an has sucked for years. Nothing new there. Although there are areas where AT&T beats other providers.

Yea. I can see the DB stength in setting on the S4, the only thing is on iOS raw signal data is not available. At least unjailbroken. I did have my 4S jailbroken on OS 6.1.2. However I already reflashed it back to stock with 6.1.3 in preparations for selling it so I cannot rejailbreak it currently, nor even get onto it since there is no SIM. They may have different metering for signal stength. I actually had a patch installed on my old iPhone 3G at one point because original metering on it was completely off and would display 3 bars then drop to 1 when youd go to make a call. However I am for certain getting more "No Signal" messages on the S4 than the iPhone. And standing next to two iPhone users on the same network with 1-3 bars each while I have "no signal" shows something about the S4.
Exactly. I was on AT&T before and I am still on AT&T. Same locations as well, and comparing it to other AT&T users with other phones in same location. Throwing a Carrier Change and different location into the mix along with a new phone makes it impossible to compare. Fosser you're bound to have different dealings with providers in different areas' Around here where I am AT&T is king for signal and Verizon is very sketchy.(AT&T has two towers in town, Verizon only has one) So its hard to tell if its the phone in your case or just location or carrier that has the issue.

I lol'd at this - because it's really true. In many (most?) areas in my state, AT&T is the absolute worst. In my county, it's the absolute best, especially in terms of data speeds.
But since my S4, I have noticed rare (once every several days? maybe once a week?) cases where I will have 1 bar and seemingly no data coverage at work for a period of probably 5 minutes, where I normally easily get 4-5 bars. It's probably just a tower thing - perhaps the nearest tower is going offline and it's using one from across town for a brief period or something.
Otherwise, I've had about the same coverage on my S4 as my S2, if not better. I would recommend calling AT&T repeatedly. At work, I deal with our cell phones all the time, all 110 of them on AT&T. We get duds, it seems. The best way I've found to correct the situation is:
Call AT&T, explaining that we've done a factory reset on the device. They will "reset something on their end" (afaik, they are simply clearing a cache of your device on the network, letting it re-associate itself) and have you reboot the phone again.
9/10 times, this temporarily fixes the intermittant problems we have with the device, because, it is in-fact intermittent. :/
Call again the next time you have coverage issue. They might do the same thing again for a couple calls. For enterprise accounts, they seem to be willing to move forward on the 2nd call.
After calling a few times about the issue, ask if you can get a replacement device under warranty. Now that they have you documented that you have a recurring problem, they are usually more than happy to replace the device under warranty.
If you have a local AT&T corporate store, perform the last step in the store to get the warranty replacement. No need to wait for shipping, plus the risk of them sending you a crappy refurbished phone.
My brother and I both got S4s almost 2 weeks ago. He upgraded from an S3. Me from a Rezound. He also has a work phone that is a Verizon Note 2.
We were out at our parents' house over the weekend. Our dad has a RAZR Maxx and a 4G Verizon MiFi for his house. All 5 of these phones/devices are on Verizon.
Both of Dad's devices and my brother's Note 2 were maintaining a steady 4G LTE connection. The Note 2 only showed about 2 bars, but it held it steady and never dropped back to 3G at any time while we were there.
But, both my and my brother's S4s would not hold 4G. We played around with network settings. Changed them from CDMA/LTE to Global, and then back. They would both occasionally switch to 4G for a minute or so, then always switch back to 3G.
I called Verizon tech support and they walked us through things including turning off the phones, pulling the SIMs and letting him push a new PRL to us. Nothing helped, so he told us to go get new SIMs. I did that yesterday and went back out to my dad's and it's still the same. My dad's phone and his MiFi maintain a steady 4G LTE signal and my S4 mostly just stays on 3G.
I also noticed that I went to the movies yesterday and when I was in the theater lobby, which is right in the middle of town, where there is strong 4G signal, my phone had dropped back to 3G there, too.
I'm still within my 14 day return period and I am seriously thinking of returning the S4 and getting a Note 2.
Does anybody have any better suggestions?
I found a thread on the AC forums where a guy reported the same issue I'm having. He took the SIM out of his Rezound, cut it down, plugged it in, and he said that fixed his 4G reception problem.
I'm going to VZW after work and trying a 3rd SIM. This time, one of the old style, that doesn't support NFC.
I went to Verizon after work yesterday and got a new non-NFC SIM. Then went back to my dad's house. The SIM does not appear to make any difference. My phone still wanted to switch to 3G and stay there.
But, I did figure out one encouraging thing. I used Battery Monitor Widget to get into the Testing screen. There, I was able to change the phone from "CDMA/LTE (Auto PRL)" to "LTE Only".
After doing that, the phone went into 4G mode and stayed there, and actually worked fine. I turned on my hotspot and connected to it with my tablet and surfed for a while, with no issues.
This tells me that the phone's LTE reception is pretty much just as good as the Note 2 and other devices I mentioned before. It's just a software issue that is switching it to 3G mode when it doesn't need to.
My Verizon Note 3 is suffering from roaming in areas that it should have a solid 4G connection.
I live and work in the city of Port Huron Michigan 48060 and when I'm at home I get a strong consistent 4G signal but when I'm at work I'm stuck roaming about 90% of the day.
I've had the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Note 2 as well in these locations and never had this issue. I'm assuming this has to be some kind of hardware issue but I'm not sure.
When I called Verizon Customer Service they tried to tell me it was because I'm so close to Canada and offered to disable roaming on my account. This didn't work at all.
When I do pick up a Canadian tower I get at least 3 text messages warning me about international charges. This daily roaming issue I'm having does not appear to be connecting to Canadian towers though because I'm not getting that warning message. It just simply has the roaming icon on the task bar and won't connect to any data services (I have data roaming disabled)
I called Verizon again and again and finally they sent me a replacement device and it worked flawlessly for one week then it started roaming in the exact same way as the first phone....
I'm kind of at my wits end with this phone. I love everything about it until I get to my workplace and have to deal with this roaming all day long.
Anybody else having these issues or know a fix? Should I just keep calling back and getting replacement devices until one works right?
My phone's manufacturing date is 10-14-2013.

Same with my note 3. The antennas are horrible in my experience
Sent from my SM-P600 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The antennas are disappointing in this device but the fact that even the nexus worked tells me it has something to do with the Note 3 and towers in that area. I had a similar problem on the Nexus where it would only not pick up 4G at home, where the tower is almost in my backyard and every other device like the Thunderbolt, RAZR, etc. worked fine. They finally checked it out and said it was a tower configuration issue.
Keep going for replacements. Why? This is the only way they will take notice and eventually when the S5 comes out, you can get one of those as a warranty replacement if you have replaced over like 5 Note 3s. That's how I got my Note 2 anyway. It was a pain but in the end worth it.

For those that have LTE/3G dropping issues I believe i have found a fix.
There appears to be something wrong with the sim card that comes with the note 4... my connection would drop lte and 3g a lot...so I tried another sim card from my S4 and the connection did not drop no more!
A few days later I had to get a replacement phone because I noticed a few dead pixels. When I received it..it had the same connection dropping issues with the sim card that came with the phone. So once again I popped in the S4 sim card and the connection was good again!
I have the black note 4 bought from amazon and in the NYC area. So it might be a bad batch but if you have connection issues try a different sim card!!

Try to go to a sprint repair store they should have a bunch. good luck! Had a friend who has the same issue with his note 4 too and he popped in his old sim card and it works without connection issues
I apologize if this is the wrong place for this question, I have had pretty much 1 bar of signal on both mine and my wife's Note 4 since we activated them less than a month ago. i just ran a speed test and the average download speed was 21.57 Mbps - is this good or not?
Thanks

I went to a sprint store and was told that they don't have any loose sim cards for the Note 4 and it only comes with the phone.
They tried to make me believe the sim card for the Note 4 is different than what's used on S5 or note 3....
I'll try to call sprint and see what I can get.

The bars are wrong for one. Use Signal Check lite or pro to see what is really going on.
If you are given a hard time about a new SIM, just tell them that you are buying a Nexus 5 on Googe's website and you need a SIM.. assuming that takes the same size

I dont get it what does the sim have to do with the operation of the radio constantly to different bands. Seems more to me like the tower selection algorithms are flawed to me and I doubt those algos are on a sim. Maybe chosing the sim from the other phone is forcing you onto the older lte network. Are you getting on any of the new bands?

The sim handles lte connection. Without the sim the phone will only connect to 3g and 1x.
Yes I'm connecting to all 3 bands wherever available. Before swapping out the sim card it would drop connection to 3g and even when on 3g it would lose connection to no signal and connect back to 3g.
There would be times it would connect to b41 but if it goes idle for a few seconds the connection will drop to 3g. This has been my experience with 3 note 4s that I received from amazon. Each after replacing the sim card will fix the connection issue.
I may have gotten a bad batch of sim cards..who knows but the areas I frequent with my nexus 5 all had strong b41 signals in the NYC market. So I know it's not my area that's the problem.
I took my N4 to a Sprint service center yesterday. The ran a speed test and it got 15 up and own. Of course we know they have a booster on site so all phones work great in the store. I showed them the speed records of nothing over 2 for the last week regardless of location and they then took the phone back to one of the techs. not realizing I was paying attention the rep handed the phone through the window to the tech but never actually let go of it. Came back about three minutes later and said yeah the tech says the phone is fine. So then he goes to a terminal and asks for my ZIP. I give it and he types it in does a few mouse clicks and a few facial expressions like he is discovering the issue. Then tells me they are converting the towers in my area from 3G to 4G and I should see my speeds come up in six months. Yep six months.
So I said ok that covers you for my area at home in North Dallas but what about where I work in Southlake? Of they are doing the same there as well.
So I got brushed of by Sprint and still have a slow phone. Asked for an old SIM and they said due to security all unused SIMS are destroyed.

I believe there's a international chat or something that you can request a sim from...when the nexus 5 came out that was how people were able to obtain Sims from. Just need to tell them you need a sim card for a Google purchased nexus 5
I had some hope and tried the Sim card trick. My S4 had 4G_LTE almost every location I used it in for over a year, and once on lte it never dropped to 3G... Data speed was 5 to 10 MEG. My note 4 for the last 30 days is probably 75% on 3G, 1/4 to 1 Meg download and almost nonexistent upload speed. When it sometimes does connect to 4G it will soon drop to 3G. Funny thing my daughter also has the note 4, and when she comes to my house she will be on 4G the whole time. While mine goes from 4 to mostly 3G.
I powered off both phones and put my s4 Sim into the note 4. Powered it on and the 3g icon kept spinning. Finally a self service app came on and said to call Sprint to be able to use data, (I'm assuming), there was an option to reset cell data and I clicked that. The phone then did a self activation, updated prl and profile while it rebooted a couple times.
Old s4 sim always getting strong 4G lte in my S4 was now providing strong 3G only in my new note 4.
OK, power off and switch the Sims back to there original phone. Now I am back to occasionally seeing 4 G, as before now I am usually on slow 3G.
I will now call Sprint and exchange the phone if necessary. I have unlimited data too. I can't wait to access it on this phone.
Excuse portions of this that seem to be rant... They are [emoji12]

No I did not activate the S4 Sim on Sprint. Com. A message came up when the phone booted saying call sprint star 2. I selected reset cell data and the phone seemed to be doing a hands free activation, when the phone rebooted it seems like it wanted to go through the same hoops again so maybe the sim was never properly activated like you're stating. I might try that later its just getting to be a pain in the ass trying to make a phone operate the way it should out of the box.
Did you activate your S 4 sim on sprint.com?
