Ok....so the nexus phones are the pure google experience. There are a couple other phones ( not many ) that are vanilla. Most of the major manufacturers create their own version of android for the consumer. Most of us buy android because hardware wise they are cutting edge and android as an os is open source. Manufacturers go through a great deal to lock down there version when most of us want a clean slate to work with. Google has stated that starting with 2.3 there are enough features that it would not be necessary to skin the os. Why is it so hard to get the pure experience? I know I could go by a nexus one or nexus s but I don't want to shell out full price for a nexus one ( which is also old tech) and I don't want to switch to tmobile to get a nexus s ( which isn't that much more innovative than a Nex one). So now here most of us are on att with the most powerful android phone rocking gingerblur trying to strip this phone of everything blur to get back to the pure google experience. I just wish that there were more top of the line phones with vanilla android.
On a side note why would motorola make such a beast of a phone and skin it with an os that focuses on social networking? Im so glad I have dual cores. I can fly through facebook

+1 My sentiments exactly. MotoBlur should have died off with the Backflip.
Perhaps those at motorola who would make the decision to ditch motoblur also rely on motoblur to remain employed.
Just a thaught.

Yeah, Motoblur is definitely the wost skin for Android. The first thing I did when I got my Atrix was install Launcher Pro Plus. Got rid of Motoblur without even using it once.

Why can't they just implement the MotoBlur Applications Platform that's on the D2, DX, and Droid Pro? You would still have those features.

They should have used Blur as a foundation for a feature-phone set, just like what HTC is doing with their Sense and Brew MP
The same reason why HTC has Sense, the same reason why Acer has their liquid interface, the same reason why LG has their own skin.
To be different.
If all phones had vanilla android, there is no reason for you to buy a phone over another. For example, the LG X2 and the Atrix are almost identical in hardware (save the webtop and extra ram for it). if they both had vanilla android, the only real deciding factor would be form factor.
its a great phone

The only deciding factors should be hardware specs, form factor (slate, keyboard, etc.), and execution. If the Atrix just had Vanilla Rom it would probably be a top seller giving the iPhone a run for its money (but not really). These overlays like Sense, Blur, and TouchWiz was a good idea when Android was still in Donut or maybe even Eclair but now it's pointless. It just hinders the OS and delays updates. And if I want to go from an HTC to a Moto I have to recreate an account now from Sense to Blur. Stupid. The consumer absolutely has no choice whatsoever. And now with AT&T swallowing T-mobile up we're going to have less choices.

My iPhone 3GS is dead, time for an upgrade, wanted to jump in the Android world, I found the spec of the Atrix really interesting but the Bootloader issues is really turning me off ... There is usually so much cool stuff out with new ROMS ... I also tend to stay has far has I can from Carrier's crap, so with that bootloader restriction it's pretty a dead project ATM ... I was wondering if we can hope anything in a short time frame (+- 6 months) ?
Thanks
I'm getting an Atrix soon and as excited as I am, I'd probably recommend getting a Nexus S or an HTC phone. You'll get the flagship Android experience with the Nexus S (or 4G if you can wait) or the HTC Sense experience which is what I originally thought Android was all about. With HTC phones though, if you want you can go with an ASOP ROM and go completely stock, or use the HTC Sense framework which really kicks the user experience up.
I'm a bit of a spec junkie but I surprisingly loved the Sense experience my HTC Desire Z provided me with. I previously owned a Sony Xperia X10 which disgusted me and really made my initial Android experience pretty sour.. missed out on Flash, missed out on updates, missed out on a ton of things and had lots of bugs. Stock Android or something HTC would probably be the way to go with the Atrix's bootloader uncertainty.
The devs on these boards are nothing short of amazing, but Motorola's really got this clamped down. I think being an Android virgin you could easily enjoy the Atrix, but stock Android and Sense are really awesome and I think everyone should experience it at least once.
I got an eLocity A7, I loved the snap of Tegra2 and Atrix specs looked really nice. I've been in the Windows Mobile 6 scene and always hated the junk carriers installed on cell phone. I always enjoyed Sense or Stock (6.5 at the time ...).
I'll stay away from Atrix until I see ROM devs ... the Desire HD seemed really nice but I'm also temped by the iPhone 4gs or 5 with the HTC Flyer combo =)
Thx for the input !

You can do just as much much with the atrix as you could with a jailbroken iphone. Coming from an iphone myself the bootloader is not a big deal. Everyone is jealous of my phone including all my iphone and evo friends. Opening up the bootloader would be extra icing on the cake.

haha that's a great analogy.
I am interested in the Atrix as well, when it comes out. However, I would be interested in flashing a stock gingerbread. As far as I understood the discussion here, the bootloader is closed, which means, if I understand correctly, will avoid the installation of another rom, won't it?
This is absurd. How does an 8 month old phone gets Gingerbread before the latest Flagship phone?

Relax. It was obvius that an older phone was going to get the update earlier than a pionner dual core phone. The Atrix is a whole new technology that is not as standar as other phones... On the other hand, just passed one month from its originally launch, what do you expect Android 6.3.5? Atrix is not a Dev phone, is a company (In fact a dual company, Motorola and At&t) personalised phone. Relax folks, it will come in time.

Yeah, I think they said "by the end of 2011" so I hope everyone likes FROzen YOgurt. We have no idea how far they are in testing Gingerbread with a full MotoBlur overlay. The DX, D2, and even the upcoming Bionic only use the MotoBlur Applications Platform that they have been working on since the release of GB and is probably easier to update. I think the Atrix is the only phone running full MotoBlur with 2.2, correct me if I'm wrong. And it seems they're putting a lot of work into that still considering the latest 4.1.57 build. I'd say not anytime before Q4 for the Atrix.
I always wondered how hard would it be for them to just throw honey comb on the atrix. The specs are the same as the xoom. Personally I don't mind waiting a bit longer if when they release ginger bread or honey comb they support dual core. I mean all the next gen phones coming out will be dual core and half of them are running the nivida tegra 2

Dear Motorola Mobility,
Nice choice on hardware!
Feel free to continue making all the most worthless software in the world to drag down your phones... but please, make everyone's life easier and JUST UNLOCK THE BOOTLOADERS so we can take your crappy software off!!!!!!!
P.S. No one wants to pay any money for your worthless laptop attachment. Who makes a trackpad that doesn't support scrolling anymore anyways?

If there was a Blur Atrix, and a 'Nexus' Atrix w/ unlocked bootloader and current software, it is hard to imagine any knowledgeable human buying the one with Blur.

My circle of friends are all Apple fans, recently one of them updated to iOS5. He's so excited about it, showing me iPhone can do this do that now. Uhm, Android had all of this a year ago hahahha!!! And I'm still on Froyo. Imagine all the new features in Gingerbread and Honeycomb

Actually no they aren't. They are so much alike that fighting over them is stupid and pointless.
Both companies can be accused of copying one another when it comes to features.
Its all a matter of personal preference, I prefer Android while others prefer ios, or blackberry or symbian etc. The only reason I dislike apple is not because of their products, but rather their terrible business ethics, otherwise i will admit that the iphone while not my flavour is a good device.

Not when it comes to business practices. Apple has hardware and software that is constantly CAPABLE of doing more, and a simple jailbreak makes it fully capable of almost everything android does. They would rather just sell you features slowly over time.
Whatever iphone 5 can do, iphone 3g probably could have done perfectly well, only now they dont have to truly TRY to make something awesome for people to buy it like android based phones do.
So yea, the devices ARE different.. try to bluetooth a file to someone on an iphone, or really even save a file, or so many other simple things. It COULD be very similar devices except apple is all about slowly selling you functionality and calling it innovation.
The OP has a point, Froyo, as much as we ***** about it, is capable of TONS more than the newest iphone. The only thing apple REALLY has is a following which attracts developers and great hardware that isn't fully utilized.
I just hate iphone fans and apple thats all the products are not.bad at all i still prefer android over ios but if they give me a free iphone i wouldnt complaint, i do agree with the op. Now whos exited about samsung galaxy notes??? I am!!!!!

I love the look of honeycomb, but it still has issues like choppines, not smooth, the stock browser is not good, lack of optimized apps... It doesn't even have an optimized Facebook app but there are third party Facebook apps anyway.. You can't even write a review on the market place and Google seems to be not planning on updating it til the next android version.. Pffffft
I have the gslate and i love it, but it doesn't run like how i want it to be being a dual core... Wish we have an OC kernel for it..
On android, it must have good hardware for it to run sleek.. My brother and his wife both have the touchpad, the browser on that one is fantastic! Why Can't android be like that? Oh yah it must be the widgets hence the choppines.. But it's fine i still prefer android no matter what..
Oh i just thought that if the touchpad was a hit, i bet apple would sue hp because it looks more similar to the ipad than the Galaxy tab does... Samsung is doing well in the mobile industry, making great mobile products, overall innovating... ,apple can't stand it
I think I'm going to switch from Android to iOS with the upcoming iPhone 5.
I just want a phone that works, and works all the time. Aside from antenna-gate, iPhone seems to be a solid and stable device.
I'm tired of messing with my phone. No Android device I have owned has been problem free, but it seems like many iPhones just work and work flawlessly.
Anyways, still undecided until the iPhone is actually released next month.
Yup, iphone is very stable.
Good thing I don't get tired of android though I do get tired of flashing roms that's why I'm using he most stable rom for me.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
You guys think that's cool. MIUI blows them all out of the water due to one fact: THEME CHANGER>>>>its sooooo cool! Like having a new rom in 2 seconds. I have been using a cheezit theme forever but I have a hundred different ones downloaded like transformers etc. Its the coolest **** ever. I could care less about anything else. It changes EVERYTHING VISUAL on your phone.
The thing that makes android win over iPhone, the one fact I've never heard a good argument for.. android will let you customize everything. Literally. Ios, though it works consistently, doesn't let you have control of most things. Its based on their business model, and some users don't want to have to be responsible for their devices.. but android wins simply because if the hardware can do something, and as a user, or as a community, you want it bad enough.. you can make it do it.
I wouldn't be as against apple as I am if they didn't fight jailbreaking like they do. Development is hindered by constantly having to find new exploits. Their devices CAN be amazing, but then they'd have to work harder to amaze you if they allowed the hardware to do everything it can do right now.

Reason I've title it "Froyo vs iOS5" because most of the new features in iOS5 are in Froyo already. Gingerbread has more features that iOS5 can't be comparable.
iOS is very stable just can't customize it to my liking, that's why I like/use Android.
Ok what if google can get updates out like apple does to its devices. Notice sprint does not even have ics yet for the nexus s since sprint is launching the galery nexus soon so I bet sprint just only, let a few phone get the ics update as a beta if you will as then user would not buy the newer ics phone. So if google charged a small update fee provided your phone meets the requirements. Or why does google even allow all these add ons like sense and touchwiz. Why not have the pure google non skinned version for like a few dollars and if you want the custom sense then wait for htc samsung to release it a year later.... cough cough fryo.... cough cough gingerbread....

Well i disagree on that one as Google does also makes phones called the Nexus and the Motorola Mobility line as Google no owns Moto Mobility. And from what i understand its the stuff like touchwiz and sense that make it harder to get the updates a quickly since the carriers must test everything for like 90 days or more and if it fails then they start the process from the beginning.
I say google should only have one uniform look to android like how apple does with i-os. (i however do not like apple as too expensive for the rich people) If you want a custom launcher like go you can download it but it would not be apart of any official rom from the maker / carrier.

i would pay for official updates if it means they come as soon as google releases them. perhaps google should not release any updates until all carriers and manufacturer are ready to push them to all phones that meet the requirements. Do what microsoft does and they just push them to all phones at the same time so the carriers dont have a say in the matter... sort of like windows update on the pc. just check for the update and then install... carriers and manufacturer have too much power to decide who gets what...
I'd love to have mine done in a timely manor. I hear it's nice this time of year!

well how does microsoft do it then with windows phone 7 and with the pc's? As long as if the phones meet the minimum requirements then good to go. This would work simply because it would get rid of the custom interfaces from the makers like htc sense or samsung touchwiz. If you want those they would only be available as a download apk from the market like how go launcher and adw desktop are. Google needs to take a stand on the custom overlays and how they devalue android with lack of updates as the makers think somehow that sense or touchwiz add somesort of value to the phone when in fact it does not. android 4 is perfect interface and with android 2.x and 3.x its good enough or download some aftermarket one like go launcher. Otherwise i would pay for updates like how i do on my laptop. they can also make money off the updates as well like $25 per phone again as long as it meets the requirements. and now google owns motorola mobility so google is now just like appple. So goolge / Moto Mobility does control the hardware and software

who is to say that custom launchers are devaluing android? if anything, they bring more to the table. i think a lot of the people here would say that they prefer some of the asthetics and options that touchwiz includes. i cant speak to sense or motoblur as i havent used them.
No. Just like I would not pay extra for gas to have someone else come out and pump it for me. In both cases we already pay too much, for gas, for the phones, service and insurance. If all phones were free I would think about it. But you pay more for a better phone, it damn well better be updated in a reasonable timely manner.

The manufacturer should be providing timely updates as part of buying the phone. We should expect new versions of the OS until at least the EOL and then bugfixes and security updates for another two years past that as a minimum.
Now that we're done with fantasy land, I wouldn't mind paying a nominal charge for a version update provided that they have a stable bug-free version of the current OS. IMHO Samsung never got there with the Epic.

True for people who are rooted but what about the average non xda type of user who waits for offical ota?

The average non-xda user wouldn't know what 'stock' android is, and frankly, they probably wouldn't be impressed with it for this reason right here

who is to say that custom launchers are devaluing android? if anything, they bring more to the table. i think a lot of the people here would say that they prefer some of the asthetics and options that touchwiz includes. i cant speak to sense or motoblur as i havent used them.

I haven't used Sense, but from my limited experience, Blur is horrid. TW smokes it by a mile. I enjoyed some of the features of Touchwiz, no joke.
And OP, while Google may now own Motorola Mobility, it doesn't mean they own all the hardware. It just means they kind of do with Motorola. They still don't with Samsung, HTC, LG, Sony, etc etc etc.
I'm still a firm believer the biggest reason Google bought Moto was for the patents, not to try and complete with Apple by owning both hardware/software.
EDIT: For the record, I think the number one way to go about the issue is this: all android phones, stock, come with their own skin out of the box by default. However, the user has the ability to go with stock Android upon bootup or something like that. Maybe a tutorial that guides users stating what that skin brings to the table. Maybe something saying here's what you'll have with the skin vs without it, and list off apps and features associated with it.
This way, us android-heads can get any phone we want with stock android, and the average user still has the same options as today.
I wanted to put something of worth within this thread as a conversation topic, but it has become rather vexing trying to pick apart the compilation of sentences that the OP's has been using lol, though me saying I mean no offense would not help I don't think heh.
In regards to paying for an upgrade, it does occur in iOS when the next incremental upgrades come to the iPod Touch Line, for iPhone's a user is guaranteed that update due to being on a monthly plan with their device unless that device is gradually replaced in which case it goes no further upgrade wise as there is a new iteration close to it in price and internal size, if iPad's are affected in the same way being on carrier/off carrier I'm unaware, I also haven't upgraded my iPod Touch in a long while either to test the validity of that, so I'm open to correction. Though iOS has been on 5.x for a bit anyways.
In this case.
Android lacks something iOS does in this case, uniformity, which is how Apple portrays their control over their platform and why it's so popular and simple to use, they limit what can be used and what is used and set a basis forward to keep compatibility in the long run. The Nexus Line is controlled by Google and their partner in each step of the way, more by Google however because they essentially get to pick and choose what they want which works well in the whole grand scheme of things, which means timely updates are to come. They don't have control over LG, HTC, Sony, or Samsung for that matter in their other endeavors in Android and what "crap"(lack of more proper word) that's proprietary they decide to put within the platform for the sake of bragging rights, they're their own entities which for the most part have added to the overall disconnection of Android across the board. Buying out that specific aspect of Motorola was a play for patents to avoid lawsuit not a play for control.
Saying you'd pay money for an update to Android on your phone becomes problematic, in our case, ICS. If you paid $10 because you to have the update when it came out, in the following months it'd be very likely it'd have problems, and you'd be the prime benefactor of said problems. You paid $10 for an update, now what about the update to address that issue? Or the update following that update to address the following issues? Or what if you paid for an update and never got an update in the long run, just for the sake of not having one?
Would those be paid as well? I'm only throwing forth baseless scenarios, because this arrives to the entitlement aspect of things. Paying to get an update makes you entitled to said update, when a company can G.A.F less about an older piece of hardware having support when they've devices in their minds which are twice as good as last years model. I understand where you're going with this thread but, paying for your update in software wouldn't make the fact that your phone is aging any better, nor would it make Android any more uniform, it'd only make it more annoying of a platform due to it. It's not a better alternative than just waiting it out on what you're currently using until you can upgrade your line to something new. Spending more money to have your phone officially supported is rather foolish. In my opinion though.
/endrant
And essentially the Epic isn't EOL/EOS. It just happens to be on it's last legs. So whether it's last update is stable or not won't matter at that point.
Anyone care to speculate if HTC is feeling pressure to put a One on the play store?
Assuming the criteria would be:
-unlocked bootloader
-Stock Android
-Small price reduction (or price match to Dev edition 650)
Personally this woul be a very very good option for a Canadian such as myself. The One is definitely my first choice but Samsung is doing such a good job at luring me in with the things I value. HTC only seems to go half way, especially since Samsung just raised the bar and went full android, so to speak.
Speculate away!

I don't think HTC feels anything like that. As many people said, S4 nexus is expensive for many people and its not like everyone wants stock android. It'll be directed to a certain group of customers.
I definitely agree that a stock S4 is for a very select group of people. I'm not sure how that is too much of a deterrent for HTC... actually I don't understand HTC's actions at all. They always go halfway, it's like the marketing/lawyering departments have the leadership by the balls... Sort of like when the wife lets you buy a new sports car but she only approves small block engines that are sporty. Not the same thing at all!!
How much does it cost HTC or Samsung to strip and maintain a phone to AOSP?
I can't imagine the HTC One with out Sense 5. It makes it for me (as well as the build etc).

I agree, I will chose Sense 5 over stock any day. Now if it was Sense 4.1 or touchwiz I can understand wanting it gone, but Sense 5 is so great IMO. I wouldn't mind the option, but things like camera (getting the image chip to work with pure android) and battery life seems to be what always keeps my HTC phone away from the pure android feel.
I have used plenty of HTC phones in the past and most of them had some form of HTC sense on them, and i have always preferred sense over stock. My last device was a nexus 4 which was pure aosp, and while it was definitely not bad, i found myself wanting sense on it all the time. I get that people have their own preferences, but htc builds their devices around sense and optimises sense to use on their hardware. I don't think HTC would release a aosp version. It would be nice if it did because we would get updates faster, but i don't see that happening anytime soon.
I read an article yesterday about some HTC Employee who tweeted something along the lines of "You can pay $649 for a cheap bit f plastic...or you could wait " Maybe HTC has something already in the works?
*EDIT* Found another article stating that HTC have denied rumours that they will be releasing a "Nexus" HTC One.

^^ This. I feel releasing an aosp SIV especially not under the Nexus moniker is nothing more then another attempt to saturate the market and artificially inflate sales numbers. I think for that tiny community who doesnt root an aosp out of the box is a viable option. Look at our community though, we have aokp, cm, pa and all that jazz. For the larger community of rooters and flashers it just seems redundant to me.

I have been using AOSP on all my devices since the very beginning, but for some reason i find myself really enjoying sense, i tried flashing CM10 but i did not like it =/ im just going to patiently wait for sense 5.1 4.2.2
I mean you could just get the dev edition and put cm10 on it, will take 5 minutes to flash

I would like to add that putting something on the play store increases online availability dramatically. It's generally difficult to buy unlocked cell phones online without paying an extra premium. Especially if you don't live in the US! Yes there are ways but the party store is very accessible and hassle free. As a Canadian this is a huge plus. Just look at how many of us are screaming to get access to a Dev edition.
I've had to spend over 100 bucks in services for the privilege of doing so and then warranty suddenly becomes a huge issue. This is a huge reason the S4 is appealing as a person who doesn't do contracts.
I didn't like AOSP on my HTC One, for some reason sense is so freakin smooth and the eco system is amazing.

I have been a nexus user for 3 years and personally prefer sense after switching to HTC one. Sense 5 is really awesome

Maybe I should give sense a try... I'm seriously hooked on AOKP though... The level of customization is superior to none! Or maybe I an missing something.
Pretty much that is my end game desire. HTC one with 64GB and AOKP ponies.
I should apologize! Apparently the xperia Z pushed to aosp long before the S4. This really make me consider HTC stepping up to the plate as a real possibility since all the kids on the block are doing it.
Throwing it into the play store might not happen though.
