Hi,
I recently purchased my first android device (HTC Incredible S). I’m pretty certain the box was opened and think the phone may be a returned item. What diagnostic apps are available which might help me determine if there are problems with the device? For example is there a way to measure how good the radio is, speed of the CPU, etc?
Thanks,
Kevin
You can run benchmarks, that's about it.
SetCPU will tell you the speed of the chip, I don't think you need root to get that info but the CPU should read the same regardless if it was returned.
Why do you think it was a returned/refurbished item? If you have doubts that makes me think you didn't buy it from a store. If you did buy it from the store, you give some BS reason like poor wifi strength and hope they don't test it in the stores wifi.
It won't get slower with use or anything, so there isn't anything to detect. If it works it works.
I would check for physical signs, like scratches, wear off etc.
There is nothing you can really chec on the phone. Except maybe browse the data with a file explorer and see if there are any remains from programs that are not stock.
>Why do you think it was a returned/refurbished item? If you have doubts that makes me think you didn't buy it from a store.
Nope, I bought it from a carrier in Hong Kong. When the guy came back form the stock room with the phone box he said something like I was lucky because I was getting the last one he had and that he checked to make sure all the accessories were in the box. I didn’t think anything of it at the time but when I was home I noticed that the box has a piece of white paper tape on the bottom and side. You have to slit the tape in order to slide the inner box out. Upon closer examination the white tape strip on the bottom part does not line up with the strip in the top part indicating that the inside box is different from the outside box. Then it hit me that "checking to ensure everything was in there" was a ruse so I would not be bothered by the fact that the box had been opened. Yeah, I should have been quicker on my toes but it was almost closing time and I wanted that phone.
My biggest concern with a Hong Kong phone would probably be that it's counterfeit. I got an HTC Magic that was counterfeit. The easiest way for me to check it was the serial number. `adb devices' showed it as "123456789abcdef" (or similarly absurd).

My screen piece isn't right. Is it possible to remove it without damaging the screen?
Also, There is a piece that I cannot figure out where to stick. It was on the sheet with the screen, immediately below it. The part of the device that corresponds to this location does not have enough surface area to be covered by a piece this shape. It seems that the piece will cover part of the buttons (on hook/off hook) as well, if applied.
Thanks!
You have the same problem that I faced! I was sent a set for HERM100/HERM300 (Cingular, i-Mate, O2, Orange, Dopod 838, T-Mobile), and not for HERM200 (TyTN, Vodafone, Dopod 9000, Softbank). They are differ by buttons layout (see Wiki).
Unfortunately, ShieldZone service is awful and does not reply to my mails.
ooh. that's not good. I think i'm going to fight it w. my CC then. How long ago did you email them?
A week ago already. I can't call them because it is hard for me to understand English by phone.
Hi, has anyone removed their screen shield yet?, mine had a line in it, but I kept it on because I needed some type of screen protection, and didn't have another brand handy at the time, I'm concerned about screen damage upon removal cause this stuff sticks fairly well, and left behind residue, I had a full kit, and just peeled most of it off because it was trash, but I left the battery cover, and screen shields on.
Shieldzone is awful. I bought a screen protector back when the Cingular 8125 came out. It was hard to put on and it had small dots all over the screen which I found very annoying. So I call them up and they told me to send it back. I shipped it back via USPS First Class with delivery confirmation. According to USPS it got to the destination but Shieldzone claimed they never received it. They never response to my emails and when I call them up they hang up on me.
Well, now I can say they are not awful, probably just stupid...
Having still nothing back from them via e-mail, I just have received a new shield set from them! The funny thing is that, although it is marked "HTC TyTN" (just like the first one), it is the same cut for HERM100, not for HERM200 once again!
So, there is a good guy there who had read my complain and decided to send me a replacement, but there is no a person smart enough to check whether they make them all similar (=wrong) or not.
Also looks like most of their people are unable to read. They couldn't read my mail describing their fault, but also they couldn't read internal instructions. On a paper inside the envelope it was a printed instruction to send this order via UPS. The instruction was even painted over by a green marker. But the person who actually was sending it had sent it via USPS, just like the original order...
OK, now I have enough pieces to cut the full shield from. But I have no an intention neither to write them once again, nor to deal with them in the future. I don't like gambling.
To add some fairness...
The replacement order is dated the same day that I e-mailed them. That's fast reaction! If they were thinking before doing it would be great! I'd be satisfied by immediate appologies and a change on their web site (if they just can't make it for TyTN actually), but they prefer to waste their money and loose reputation instead...
I guess I got lucky. Mine said just HTC TyTN and it was correct for the Cingular 8525,
I will say it took me and my wife about an hour to figure out how to put it on though... 7 years of college went to waste it looks like
A lot of people do not like the screen, but I love it. I have a slightly jittery hand and the "stick" helps keep me from selcting the wrong thing.
Granted because I have the Cingular 8525 there are some places that are not covered (because the HTC TyTn has the video conference button and eye.) But all and all I feel much better protected because of it.
Good luck...
Hi Guys,
I bought one of these and as "good" as it may seem, just warning you off, or at least giving you notice.
The magnet affects the phone and operates the screen by it's self.
Well, that's a little miss leading. What it does is I think, is tell the phone that you have opened the slide.
So depending on your settings, whenever you attach the phone it will either unlock it, open the dialer, read your sms messages or start pressing the soft keys.
Apart from the ridiculously poor delivery (1st class postage arrive 7 days after shipping. A parcel from US came quicker" ) that I don't know whether to blame on them or Royal Mail, I must of got the one adapter with no bloody adhesive on the back! Industrial sticky tape needed, that's if I decide I can live with the unlocking!
*mods* Really sorry, I didn't notice the "accessories" thread. I only hang out in this one, I've only just noticed it.
Sorry to hear you are not very happy with this, i've had one for a while and i reckon its one of the best i've had. as well as being small and discreet the magnet holds the pda even when driving down dirt tracks and over speed bumps.
The magnet does occasionally set off the quick list but it has already been mentioned on this forum that it is activated by magnet it just depends where you put the adapter
i dont know about you guys but im keeping magnets well away from my device.

Do you have a Dual then? Where is your strip to attached the magnet?
After a bit of experimentation, if you place the strip horizontal just underneath the camera (in the center) then the magnet wont set off the phone!
Now I've fixed it with my own tape I'm really happy with it!
i've got mine right in the middle, covering the orange logo, after playi g with it a bit last night it seems to depend a lot on how quickly you move the dual towards the magnet and whether you go staraight towards it or come in from an angle. one thing i havent tried is disabling the quick menu, will give it a go later as i never use it anyway
I think this information might be useful for lots of people.
The question is: What problems should we look for when wanting to buy a second hand hermes, and how to look for them?
Everyone who's had problems with herms or knows about them should give an oppinion.thanks
Watch out for:
High frequent tone, ONLY when the display is on. Very annoying.
My phone has been to the shop for 3 times. Now I have got a new phone!
But I miss my HTC......
i had that one too, on the day i bought the 2nd hand tytn. changed the radio and rom and it went away. then the battery started heating, but i don't know if it heated before too
1). turn device on if you can.
2) sceen alignment and whitescreen - some people have the whitescreen problem, to see if it could be in yours(one type anyway) run your finger down to the bottom right at the side lcd screen (not on the screen, the casing) til you are about 2/3 of the way down from the top. lightly increase pressure and see if it starts going white. Please note this is a specific type of whitescreen which can be fixed BUT will have the warranty voided to do so. Try running a screen alignment (ask if FTouch flo is on the phone & active as this will stop this working and require a soft reset to fix)
2). test the buttons usually the bottom buttons ie. hotkeys, answer/hangup. but dont forget to check out the slideout keyboard too.
3). check to see if the battery gets hot or if there are any "hot spots" on the case. this indicates problems too. there may be a short somewhere on the hermes that is draining power REALLY quickly or may be affecting if power gets to where its needed.
4). soft reset and check if "no GSM" flashes up in the loading stage as this shows its a brick with a corrupted radio rom. this may be fixable but for me personally it would be bought only for parts (and would have to be cheap).
This is what I'd do as it is fairly quick BUT ths works only if you can see the device before you buy it otherwise you may be in for a nasty surprise.
Hope this helps...

While it's not exactly a problem, it could be a warning that problems may happen in the future.
Check the stickers under the battery, make sure the VOID sticker is intact and the (at least mine had one) reflective sticker is also intact.
Check the model and IMEI listed on the sticker, then compare it to the model and IMEI listed under the Identity tab in Device Information (Start -> Settings -> System -> Identity tab). This could give away someone trying to sell a HERM100 model as a new HERM200 (and asking a higher price), or a phone that may have been dropped and damaged. Also check the call duration tab if it's being sold as 'low use' (true, this can be cleared, but it's not exactly a couple of taps to do it).
At the very least, this could save the buyer some dosh and expose the seller as the potentially slimy person they are.
White screen mda vario 2
Hi,
I have purchased a mda vario 2, last november, with only 3 months waranty, now I`m having problems.
I have had my screen going white, some times if I go into landscape mode or turn the light on and off by means of pressing the power buton quickly the screen comes back, then the screen sometimes goes all blurry.
Now the phone wont come back on at all, all I get is this white screen, the screen lights up but just a white screen, nothing else.
So I bought a new screen from E-Bay and I connected it up to my phone but I get the same, the screen lights up, same old white screen.
Nothing else, If anyone knows what this problem is I would be very grateful.
It was a shop I brought the screen from off of E-Bay, I asked prior to purchasing this screen if it would be compatible with my phone and they told me that it was.
Many Thanks for any help, ideas what this could be.
Roy2008,
Not nice of you to hijack someone else's thread.
Anyway, read the following thread for information: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321163
li-ion have a limited number of hours before it dies i would check batt time of cause thats kinda problematic to test
I appologize if I hijacked someone else`s thread.
As I am new to this site I thought that you just use it like you do in a chat room.
I guess I was wrong, I`ll try to figure out how you use this site without annoying anyone.
My Appologies.
Anyways, Thankyou for your help, and for the hijacking part.
thinking of buying a hermes
I've been reading through out the forums because I am seriously thinking of buying this phone, a second-hand because I can't afford a brand new one. I'm a bit worried about the Whitescreen and D-pad failures thread, it seems it's the usual or maybe common problem of this model. So I have some questions before I do get this model.
-How would I know if the phone has been opened for repairs?
because I read here that you need to open the phone to fix the whitescreen prob.
-Do I look for one that has FTouch flo to check the screen alignment?
is there any other way to do this just in case the phone doesn't have one installed.
-How long does the battery last if you only use it for texting, wifi and making short calls? Also about the battery heating up, does it mean while it's idle? Is it sometimes normal for batteries to heat/warm up?

Are there other more ways to check if symptoms of whitescreen is present? I'd really like to be thorough because I'm pretty sure the ones that I can afford would not have any warranty anymore.
The ff. are the things I think I should do to make sure the phone is in good condition:
Make a call
Send SMS
Try wifi
Use the camera
Check all keys/buttons on the front, sides and dpad if all working
Bluetooth
Try a memory card
Pls. advice me if I've forgotten anything else.
I'm actually choosing between Hermes and HTC Elf, I'm leaning more to the Hermes because of the Dpad and it's slightly cheaper than the Elf.
Thanks in advance!
Also check the external speaker, I have four that I tweak, and two had loose speaker connections(made a good deal for me). It's an easy fix, I got the tool at radio shack. BTW these units are out of warranty.
Ok I'll add that.
Anything else?
Essentially a good indication of a possible whitescreen issue is the buttons on the front not working.
To check to see if its been opened look under battery as jdc said, theres a small white sticker over a screw on the right hand side thats says Void if removed, If can see a screw under the flash LED, then its been opened.
Cheers...
Once upon a time when I woke up with a bad mood, I threw my phone away to stop the alarm.. Since that moment my I/O button which is on top of the phone (the one you switch the LCD's blacklight on and off) is hard to push.
The 'clicking-system' is (I think) dented in, and from the surface it actually looks like that too. It still works though, but you have to press really hard.
I asked at the local phone shop what my invoice would look like if I have it repaired by them and I found out it would be better to do it myself.
The problem is that although all the parts which are available on internet, this button is really hard to get. I can;t even find it on eBay (maybe I just search the wrong way).
Does anyone know where to get this, and if it hard to solder it (if needed)?
I am located in The Netherlands, so I prefer something that SHIPS to NL.
I found this (https://www.gsm4world.us/htc-touch-...lex-cable-lcd-key-ear-repair-d-02961_405.html) but I don't know if it will do the job.
Thank in advance guys!
Does anyone know?
gsm4world.us has almost full line of parts for the fuze/tp
Sorry I can't be of more use, but some searching on eBay will show that you can get the same part as on GSM4World a bit cheaper:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/HTC-TOUCH-PRO...Accessories?hash=item1c0ce8e08a#ht_2173wt_939
Edit: Actually, I'm not convinced that the part you suggested is the one you need. I think you should hold off buying anything until someone can tell you for certain which is best.

Hello all,
Sorry for posting here. This is my first Windows device so I don't really know where to turn for help.
All of a sudden there is a 1 pixel wide vertical green line down my screen. What happened? Is there a way to get rid of this? Do I have to send it in somewhere?
Where on the screen is this line? Have you tried restarting the tablet? If you move the mouse onto the line, does the mouse cover it up or does the line go over the pointer?
If it's just a hardware problem (quite possible from the description) you should be able to get a warranty replacement easily. Just set up the new tablet with the same Windows Live account, re-download your apps and mail (you won't be charged again for apps, of course) and you'll be pretty close to where you left off. If you want to be sure all your data is preserved, though, you might want to back it up first (to external storage or to SkyDrive)
Thanks a lot for your reply. I've tried restarting the tablet, and no luck. The line is about 2 inches from the right side. Moving the mouse onto the line, makes the line go over the mouse. Do you think a display driver uninstall/reinstall would help?
If it is a hardware problem, does one just go to ASUS website and find the service phone number and tell them? I just bought it less than a month ago over ebay (Brand New), does it need to be from a normal store? Sorry for all the questions, please just answer whatever you have time for.
Yeah, that's almost guaranteed to be a hardware problem. Given the way the video driver handles the mouse pointer, it's highly likely the pointer would be drawn over the line if was a software glitch. On the other hand, I'd also expect you to be seeing other display corruption and/or video driver crashes in that case. Meanwhile, thesymptom you describe (perfectly vertical line of a single primary color) is actually a common (by the standards of such things) failure mode of LCD screens.
If it was bought brand new, there should have been warranty info included. In any case, I'd suggest getting in touch with Asus, yes. You might need the tablet's serial number or similar, but even if you don't have actual warranty info it should be covered for at least one year unless there's any sign of external physical damage or anything.
Thank you very much for your help. I'll look into the warrantee info.
If the mouse pointer goes under the line, I strongly believe there is a hardware issue. Might not necessarily be the actual display, but could be a cable connection. Either way, it is definitely covered under warranty.
You have one year from the date of purchase, regardless of where it is purchased from. The RMA process usually takes about 14 business days to complete. If you're located in the US and you haven't already called in for an RMA yet, shoot me an e-mail and I'll see if I can set one up for you. I can be reached at [email protected].
If the device is LESS than a month from the reseller, I would actually contact the reseller first to see if you can get a straight-up exchange. I'm not familiar with the particular eBay seller, but most offer a 30 day return period for defective units. Check with them first about an exchange, and if that isn't possible, contact us for a repair.
