Well, this is embarrassing.... - Droid X General

For Pete's fookin sake.....
I mussa flashed 20 friggin ROMS to my WinMo Omnia....and I CAN'T EVEN GET THE DAMN DROID TO BE RECOGNIZED ON MY PC.
For cripes sake
So I loaded the USB driver.....on my XP PC. Plug in the droid. "USB Device Not Recognized...." OK....google....read....read...read... ah HAH...I'd set the USB Debugging mode to ON so I could root. Need to shut that back off. Done.
"USB Device Not Recognized...." .... again. Really? REALLY???? So....here I sit....unable to connect my REALLY nice Droid to my GODDAAMMMMMM PC
So...would somebody hold my hand here? Lill' help?

Have you tried switching different modes? Charge only, mass storage, pc mode. One of them might work.

Well I tried Usb and pc I wasn't sure about the other 2. When I was reinstalling the driver I noticed 1 choice was" remove", but I just picked repair. I'll try removing it tonight and then reinstalling it. I was hoping somebody might have an alternate driver to suggest

At least now the pc recognizes my device, and I geta drive in my explorer but I see no data. My wifes fone hook s up to her laptop &says its dismounting the sd card...im not getting that here on my pc ....its like the phone won't let go ofthe sd er sumpin ...very annoying.

when you plug your phone into your computer, look at the notifications bar on your phone. Does it say that usb is connected?

Sometimes it helps to switch the USB port you plug in to.

So to see the data, are you switching the phone to Mass Storage mode? I know it's an obvious question, but just wanted to make sure...
Also some people had success hooking up to different computers.

I thank u all very much. My phone hooks right up to my wifes W7 laptop but no joy in any port, any storage setting, any gender of dead chicken being swung overhead while chanting in various states of undress. I did get it to rain,so that's sumpin. I quit.
I'm not gonna theme because I don't want to load the pc stuff on her computer (and listen to her complain that I'm "using up her memory"....u married guys recognize the die-on-this-hill avoidance) for the off-chance that things don't go right &I need to sob or abp or whatever that whole thing is.
I'm rooted,deodexed,de-bloatwared, and happy as a pig in **** with stock.
I might theme down the line if I can figure out how much crap id have to reload ... I'm frequently incapasitated by laziness and am tired of longpress deleting and longpress adding ...plus...I just bought power amp & don't wanna lose my license.
But its still fookin annoying that the goddam thing won't load on my desktop.
Peace out.

before you quit, could you try one simple thing?
have the phone on when you plug it into your computer. Once done, go to the notifications bar. If the phone recognizes the computer, it should say "USB connection".
Click USB connection and make sure its not on charge only.
To access the sd card, click on USB Mass Storage.

Man that's a good thing you and I go back so far. Is it was anybody else I'd say no forget it. I can tell you that the phone says usb connection. And I'm trying to find the sd card on the windows explorer
... are you saying there is somewhere else is the windows environment to click that I can determine if it's on mass storage or charge only?

Ok, here da deal:
Phone sees PC
Phone in mass storage mode
PC say "looky dere, m810,or sumtynes motorola.bla bla
Error occurred during bla bla
Bottom line: no removable drive in win explorer.
On the wifey's laptop it asks to scan, then poof! Dialog to do 5 or 6 things includir browse.
So thx y'all, but I'm satisfied for now with root,dedodex,de-bloated, running ADW Launch on stock.
Seriously, this is everything I always wanted my winmo to do...32gb sd & running pwr amp & I've retired my ipod micro (cuz the power cord gave up the ghost & ****in Apple wont let it work without their proprietary $20 cord ....on a $39 unit that holds 1gb? Heh..fuk dat....I digress. ) ...bookmarks to my cyber-haunts in short cuts that I can TALK THREADS INTO! Nah, im gold baby.

Any tips on mounting this thing in win7 x64?

It seems like a craps shoot for me if windows will recognize it... hell sometimes my notification bar tells me usb is connected but doesn't give me options to turn it on or off... and this is all with USB set to mass storage... is there possibly something I am doing wrong?
Like sometimes it hooks up without any issues, other times windows sees it, but after a few minutes says its failed to install a MTP USB device, so I have tried pointing it at the location where the sammy USB drivers were installed but nothing... I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling the drivers and manually switching them to other random things...
sometimes a reboot of the comp works it out, but other times it doesn't... I have the feeling I am just missing something...
Same here, except i'm on WinXp SP3. Get USB connected icon in notification bar of Vibrant, but windows task tray says failed to install device.
Looks like iffy drivers to me. Since samsung apps isn't available in the US yet, is there somewhere else we can get Kies?
The file you want for Windows 7 x64 is called GalaxyS_64.zip - worked perfect for me. Can't remember where I downloaded it from, though... uploading it now.
Edit: Here's the file you want.

That's the same thing I have tried installing a few dozen times before... still won't work.
There are multiple notifications you have to deal with on the phone. Took me a while to figure it out, too.
First you have to pick the mode you connect to W64 in (Mass Storage), then you actually have to mount the internal memory and card as drives for W64 to see them. This is all in the Notification bar on your phone. Just because you see the USB icon does NOT mean you are supposed to be connected.
THEN you get the "What do you want to do with this?" from Windows.
I got so tired of all the confirmations I just installed Dropbox. Now if I want a file on the phone I just drop it into my Phone Stuff directory and pick it up on my phone. No USB cable, no WiFi, just grab it and go.
If you're looking to xfer over a big batch of media files there is DoubleTwist and several other apps like it that will do so over WiFi.

Well I am installing dropbox because this is getting ridiculous... after a fresh flash it mounted once, then after that it wouldn't ever again. I tell it to mount to my computer and everything, but the computer just shows an icon that it is trying to install the drivers and never does... Come on samsung, stop being so proprietary...
Wow guys I didn't have any problems at all. USB Mass Storage worked the first time and it keeps working. Where I encounter problems is when I set it to USB Debugging then it doesn't get recognized.
ETA: I'm on Windows 7 x64 with all the current updates.
My windows is 32bit XP, but try this trick i've discovered, may be it will help. Say into voice dialer "Open SD card" -> check "Enable USB mass storage". Let's know how it works
Hey Degeneration, you can also install the Android SDK.
Unfortunately I can't post external links until I'm validated by a mod, but if you google "screenshot vibrant" (w/o the quotes) it should be the top link.
The domain is know your cell dot com and it has links to the Android SDK and the Java SE SDK in the instructions to take screenshots of your Vibrant.
I personally think you should try this because your phone may be defective. I'm running W7-64 Pro and didn't have to do anything to get the phone and the PC to see each other.
Wow I had no idea people were having this issue. I'm running Win 7 Ult. x64 and for me it was just plug in and go. When I was rooted on my G1 I had a similar issue but using USB Debug and the Android SDK fixed that. hope you get it figured out.
Yeah I'm on win7 and I installed the drivers and plugged in the phone and was good to go
Sent from my Samsung Vibrant using XDA App
I installed the drivers before ever plugging the phone in. I also have had SDK, adb, and Odin3 ready before plugging it in. When I first got it I immediateness set it to mass storage and didn't have a problem. Then when I started messing with it more I started having trouble every once in a while with it mounting, to the point that now it works every once in a while, mostly right after a fresh flash. Personally I think it's a combo of both the phone and the computer doing crap, but it's pretty lame. I don't even remember installing drivers for my G1, and definitely nothing else and I never had an issue with it. I don't see why samsung can't kiss a little butt or pay a little money to have windows recognize the phone and be able to install the drivers from the net. Now if the problem was just for people messing with their phones it would be one thing, then it's on me. But last night I was running stock again and it only worked the first time it connected, but I forgot to switch to mass media so I disconnected, switched, reconnected, and nothing. Tried switching back and same thing...
Constantly just keep getting told at best that windows failed to install an MTP (or whatever, I just closed the thing in the notification area and when I tried reconnecting the USB cable I got the phone just telling me USB is connected but giving no options) device failed to install...
bah... oh well

PC doesn't sync with Vibrant... help needed

I hook up my Vibrant to my PC and nothing happens. The phone starts charging but I never get a prompt on my computer or sound notification that something has been mounted.
I go to my computer and see nothing of an external hardware source being plugged in.
I want to root my phone but I can't seem to get my Vibrant to show up on my computer. My MyTouch Slide had no problem. Suggestions?
I've already tried changing the USB drive settings...
I am not near my computer right now, so maybe someone more experienced can give you precise advice, but what I did for my PC (XP Pro) is download the Samsung USB Driver, install it, and only then the PC would recognize the phone.
Also, after your phone is recognized, you still have to mount it as an external drive from the phone itself before it can work.
See this is why I hate windows. I spent the last half hour trying to figure out what was wrong with this. In the end, simply plugging the USB into a different port fixed everything.
Have the same issue here. One port works and one does not recognize the Vibrant no matter what I try.

That's not a windows problem, you have an iffy USB port
Also, now that you have fixed your issue, why not just download the update.zip file directly to your phone, no need to use your pc.

USB Mass Storage Issues - Vibrant

When I plug my Vibrant in by USB on WinXP I am getting a device not recognized error. I get nothing when plugging into a Mac. I've tried multiple cables and I have changed the USB options to each option.
I have rooted the phone and installed the GPS fix.
Any suggestions for fixing this would be appreciated.
Thank you
Load the galaxy s drivers, will work after that

What about for Mac OS? The phone doesn't show up when I mount the cards. Is there a way to get mass storage to work on a Mac that doesn't involve turning on USB debugging?
I'm not a mac person, sorry, hopefully someone else can chime in on that.
Edited, if you go to the thread i linked, the op states for linux and mac the android sdk drivers should work, hope that helps.

When you plug it in are you sliding down the notification bar and selecting the USB Connected > Mount option?
As well when you are done you have to Unmount when you are done.
Yeah, like kizer said too, mount the device. I was assuming that step is s.o.p.

Yes, I had a G1 for years and that always worked perfectly. The only way to get my Vibrant to show up though is to use USB debugging mode.
I just did some quick googling and it seems mac users are doing exactly what you said you don't want to do, setting usb debugging on, and that seems to be a quick fix. I'm sure there is more info out there in cyberspace, but if debugging works, I say go with it. I always have debugging turned on, incase I need that oops adb action.

When i use it on my Mac, i have to enable USB debugging. Then both drives (internal and SD) pop up just fine.
So it looks like someone answered this, just confirmation then.
Another theory
My Vibrant has mounted normally and without any problems on WinXP sp3 and Win7-64 systems, but I have also run into the occasional system where it will not work at all.
On the systems where things worked normally it was never required that I load a special Samsung USB driver for the phone. The standard mass storage drivers included with Windows worked fine.
My new theory is that there may be a drive letter collision issue in some cases. On the laptop that I use with my phone 90% of the time the phone always mounts as drive G: and H:.
On other machines I have noticed that the phone always seems to mount as G: and H: even if E: and F: are available. I'm not sure how/why it always gets mounted using those letters. It may somehow be defaulting to that because G: and H: were the first letters available on the first system I plugged it into.
I have a Win7-64 desktop machine that will not currently allow the phone to connect. This particular machine already has G: and H: assigned to hard drive partitions.
I will probably experiment with temporarily changing the letter assignments to see if I can get the phone to mount. It's worth a shot I guess.
Sorry, I didn't go into as much detail as I could have.
I've installed those drivers listed here as well as any other I could find. I've tried USB debugging mode, changed all the USB modes listed. I've mounted and unmounted the SD cards using the settings menu when doing this.
Is it possible that there is some background service that should be running? Or is it possible that something in the firmware is screwed up? I guess it's also possible that the USB plug itself is messed up?
Thanks for the help.
I used to use this forum years ago when I had a HTC WinMo phone, it seems to have lost any record of past posts due to inactivity.
As kizer stated in his post, are you mounting from the prompt on your phone's notification bar? Once plugged into your pc or mac, you slide down the notification bar from the top of your home screen, click on the usb prompt then select mount. Thats the only step you didn't list that may have been missed.
Edited - the prompt in the notification area may say mass storage, my home pc fried last week so i cant test it to get you the specific verbage.

I don't get any prompt at all. At this point I will just install CM6.1 when it comes out and hope that fixes the issue. It's usable for now. I can transfer files using WiFi File Explorer for now.
It helps if you know if you are USB 1.0 or 1.1 or 2.0....or even 3.0.
Also, are the USB ports powered ?
Are the USB ports on the computer in question filled with dust and dirt ?
Contacts corroded ?
Are the ports recognized by the operating system correctly (you know, drivers loaded since it's old arsed WinXP) ?
Do you undertand how to operate a computer at a higher level than just being able to install viral apps ?
Malware ?
Trojans ?
I could go on all day.
It works fine here, on Win7x64, WinVistax64, and *nix.
That is bizarre you should get a least something in your taskbar.
Click for larger photos if you like.
Heres what my looks like and of course I have the taskbar pulled down so you can see it.
Below that is the box you would click to say connect it.
I did have a freind who didn't realize he could pull down the notification bar. Could that be the case here?
Op, you do know you can pull down the bar at the top of your screen, the one with your clock and battery icon etc., put your finger up there and swipe in a downward motion.

I have tried this on a corporate IT managed WinXP system (running Kapersky AntiVirus) and a currently updated Snow Leopard MacBook. I could give details all day as well. Both are in good condition and very likely not the issue.

they don't understand i had this issue too man and i fixed it.
first go to that link and download those drivers... use the uninstall app to uninstall the drivers off your computer.
while your doing that go into your phone setting>applications>usb settings
make sure it says "ask on connection" (you can change it later) go back and go to development to turn on usb debugging.
reinstall drivers, connect phone wait for the drivers to load. the un-connect phone turn debugging off.
and it was fixed for me.
hope this helps

[Q] Can't mount USB storage/SD card in OSX

I am having a huge problem mounting my Epic 4G to my Mac. When I select Mount USB, nothing happens. I have read several posts about Galaxy S phones having the same problem, they all say to have USB Debugging turned on, but mine is on and still can't mount.
Also, another huge problem. I connect my phone, then I use adb to access the sd card, but I can only use adb for a short period of time, then it disconnects itself, then I try to run adb again but it does not recognize it. I have to unplug the phone, then plug it again.
Does anybody have any idea why this is happening or how to fix it?
Note: I can do everything perfectly fine with my Sprint Hero
Thanks

Dude, welcome to the club. Since i got my phone i have not successfully been able to have it read on my Mac Mini. Tried different cables and different ports. Some say get a powered USB hub but i'm not in the mood to clutter my puny desk space.
For now i use an app called Websharing to transfer stuff via WiFi. It's a pain sometimes but that's how i get by for now.
I don't have any problem with 10.5 or .6
I can use either regular or debug. Sometimes rebooting the phone and/or the computer helps. It could be a crappy cable. I don't think the supplied one is very good. The one I use with no problems is the overpriced 3 footer that the corporate sprint stores have. I think the cables that came with the epic, moment, and evo were el cheapo. I had a problem that you are describing with a stock supplied cable. I figured out that the micro usb end wasn't making solid contact with the phone. If I would move the cable, it would disconnect. Changing to a real micro usb cable helped me. It could be the usb port is flaky or the usb plug is intermittent. If you are using vmware fusion or bootcamp or dual boot, see if it drops connection in a different os.
No luck under Windows7 (running with Parallels Desktop) either. I'll try buying a new USB cable and see if that works ... Will try Websharing too.
Thanks

Did you put your phone into debug mode?
I found that trying different USB slots on the PC, it will eventually work. When you plug it in the first time, it will install some needed drivers ABD etc, if you unplug the phone and plug it back into the same USB slot, it will install the last remaining drivers and you should now be able to see the phone.
Samsungs drivers are flaky at best. It took me a good hour to get it working for me so I could root my phone.

temporary fix
This topic has been discussed at another tread.... but anyway, The Macs (current generation only) do not give you enough energy at the USB to power the phone into connecting the memory card. Nor even enough to recognize the phone for more than a few seconds. You can get around it, temporarily, by connecting through a powered USB port. Tetheris still doen's work, but at least you can mount your sd card. It's a software issue... if you're running Windows on the mac machine, it'll connect and mount fine. So, ask Mac for a fix.

Phone cannot be seen by any PC

My phone is a huge POS and I am ready to throw it through t-mobile's window. I have been getting a lot of hangs and crashes on my phone so I decided it was time to finally upgrade it. Well I have tried both my work and home PC's and my laptop. And the phone never shows up on the computer. When I plug it in, the phone beeps and asks me if I want to use Kies, Mass Storage, or Media Player. No matter what I select the phone is never seen by windows explorer, disk manager, or Kies. I have tried a few different cables and still no dice. I know the connection is good as it charges and asks if I want to mount the device. I figured it was software so I decided to factory wipe the phone, but that didn't help at all. I am at a loss, T-Mobile probably won't do anything for me. I am ready to jump ship and go back to iPhone, Android has not been a very good experience for me.
Ye sorry you had to get the vibrant dude. I would have gone with the nexus s on tmobile. Maybe try to enable USB debug. I don't know for a fact if it might help. Otherwise if you're willing to deal with it and put in a little time you could root it and run bionic 1.3.1 and just do the basics with it. With rooting you can go much farther but I dont think you care for much more than the basics. This phone is a great hardware unfortunately the software is not upto par. This isn't so much android as it is Samsung for crippling it with their touchwiz overlay and rfs format.

First, download your phone usb driver from Samsung and install on your PC or laptop.
Try these steps:
1. Click the menu
2. Click Setting
3. Click Wireless and Network
4. Unplug USB
5. Click USB Setting
6. Select the last option
Good luck

When I plug it in, the phone beeps and asks me if I want to use Kies, Mass Storage, or Media Player. No matter what I select the phone is never seen by windows explorer, disk manager, or Kies. I have tried a few different cables and still no dice. I know the connection is good as it charges and asks if I want to mount the device. I figured it was software so I decided to factory wipe the phone, but that didn't help at all. I am at a loss, T-Mobile probably won't do anything for me. I am ready to jump ship and go back to iPhone, Android has not been a very good experience for me.

I know what you are going through. I have had to uninstall and reinstall the drivers so many times.
If you are able to get the phone updated to Froyo it will be much better. If you are willing to get your hands a little dirty, look into installing the famous Voodoo lagfix. It makes a night and day difference!
if you wanna update to froyo 2.2 i would suggest using kies mini
Going to bump this. Phone still is not recognized by any PC. It's not a driver issue. It charges, but does not allow me to transfer files or anything.
I have the two vibrant and one with your problem. The one with the problem was bought used and I'm sure that the seller had no intention of ripping me off because the from was the factory stock . Anyways it doesn't open as a mass storage or is detected in Odin. The best thing I could do was flash cyanogen or miui on it and that's how I keep up to date. I believe that this Is a hardware problem. Perhaps by water, dust, or who knows what. Nothing I can do about it.

If you had a Linux box to plug it into, you could probably find out more of what is going on. You could try putting the phone into download mode and see if Odin can see it. It could well be a bad USB port. You could take it into T-Mobile and ask them to try.
It's not an android problem, but it could be cheap Samsung hardware or bad software.
All three comps using the same os?
Same driver version for all three?
Is it recognized in device manager when plugged in?
If all you need to do is transfer files, then use Samba

I have had this problem before, make sure the USB cable your using is a data usb cable, and not just a charge cable, yes they do exist.
Look this might sound stupid, but try different cables, even a new one if possible, and ask them to test it for you. I had the same problem and I had a working cable (or so I thought), one day a friend lend me his cable so I tried once more, expecting the usual, but it was recognized by my pc. It was a bad cable all along.

This is possible, I was using a Generic cable and could not get Odin to recognize it until I used the official Sony cable at one time a few months ago.
