I am having a huge problem mounting my Epic 4G to my Mac. When I select Mount USB, nothing happens. I have read several posts about Galaxy S phones having the same problem, they all say to have USB Debugging turned on, but mine is on and still can't mount.
Also, another huge problem. I connect my phone, then I use adb to access the sd card, but I can only use adb for a short period of time, then it disconnects itself, then I try to run adb again but it does not recognize it. I have to unplug the phone, then plug it again.
Does anybody have any idea why this is happening or how to fix it?
Note: I can do everything perfectly fine with my Sprint Hero
Thanks

I've successfully mounted my SD card on OSX. I have debugging turned off. If it won't mount, try a different slot, if that doesn't work, try rebooting the phone. It will work.

Dude, welcome to the club. Since i got my phone i have not successfully been able to have it read on my Mac Mini. Tried different cables and different ports. Some say get a powered USB hub but i'm not in the mood to clutter my puny desk space.
For now i use an app called Websharing to transfer stuff via WiFi. It's a pain sometimes but that's how i get by for now.
I don't have any problem with 10.5 or .6
I can use either regular or debug. Sometimes rebooting the phone and/or the computer helps. It could be a crappy cable. I don't think the supplied one is very good. The one I use with no problems is the overpriced 3 footer that the corporate sprint stores have. I think the cables that came with the epic, moment, and evo were el cheapo. I had a problem that you are describing with a stock supplied cable. I figured out that the micro usb end wasn't making solid contact with the phone. If I would move the cable, it would disconnect. Changing to a real micro usb cable helped me. It could be the usb port is flaky or the usb plug is intermittent. If you are using vmware fusion or bootcamp or dual boot, see if it drops connection in a different os.
No luck under Windows7 (running with Parallels Desktop) either. I'll try buying a new USB cable and see if that works ... Will try Websharing too.
Thanks
I am able to see and access the SD card at work after installing Samsumg USB Drivers under Windows XP, however I am not able to use adb to access the phone ... ahh, this is driving me crazy, I need to root the phone and install a custom rom ... >_<

Did you put your phone into debug mode?
I found that trying different USB slots on the PC, it will eventually work. When you plug it in the first time, it will install some needed drivers ABD etc, if you unplug the phone and plug it back into the same USB slot, it will install the last remaining drivers and you should now be able to see the phone.
Samsungs drivers are flaky at best. It took me a good hour to get it working for me so I could root my phone.

That worked, turning on USB debugging and switching to another USB slot. But, this is at work under WinXP. Now I need to make it work under OSX at home.
I'll try Ubuntu when I get home and see if that works...
Thanks

I know some people successfully installed Clockwork via Mac but I haven't seen anything about root. Instructions might be the same, files are obviously different, maybe it'll help you:

temporary fix
This topic has been discussed at another tread.... but anyway, The Macs (current generation only) do not give you enough energy at the USB to power the phone into connecting the memory card. Nor even enough to recognize the phone for more than a few seconds. You can get around it, temporarily, by connecting through a powered USB port. Tetheris still doen's work, but at least you can mount your sd card. It's a software issue... if you're running Windows on the mac machine, it'll connect and mount fine. So, ask Mac for a fix.

Yes..thanks. That did it for me. The only thing I hadn't tried was plugging it into my powered usb hub...boom it works.
Worked for me too... can't f'in believe it.
Did anyone ever find a fix to the usb problem some epics have? Every time I plug my phone into any type of computer, it will work for the first time I plug in, but if I unplug it and plug it back in, my computer says usb device not recognized. This also happens in my BMW, it let me listen to music through the usb once, and that was it, now it doesn't even read it. I've heard of others with this problem, but I haven't seen anyone fix it. I don't have Sprint's insurance, so I don't know how things go towards getting a replacement. I also tried downloading an app to automatically mount when usb is connected, but no dice. I have tried different microsd cards too but same problem.

i only have this issue on damn dell computers it seems, i dont think there is a fix, however what i do to get it to recognize is just unplus both the connector to the phone and the usb from the computer, and then it registers finally.. Its very annoying but it will work, just try that, i hate that but only have issues on dell, my 2 HP's work great with connectng
Changing the micro usb cable also helps. The one that came with the phone is garbage. I personally use the cable from my evo

I cannot get my epic to mount for ANYTHING! I factory wiped the phone, nope, I used a palm pre usb cable nope, I downloaded the official samsung drivers nope, I plugged the cable into the motherboard on the computer nope, I tried a different computer running windows 7, nope tried a laptop using windows vista, nope. Does anyone know ANY WAY POSSIBLE to get this thing to mount? I selected mass storage and dissabled and enabled usb debugging. Im just not having any luck. It seems that the computer recognizes the phone is connected just cant get to the files on the SD card.
I also spent many hours trying to figure out what the hell was wrong with my Epic, that is, why it would come up as a "malfunction" in Windows when I plugged the USB cable in.
I tried drivers, different restore points, wiping, etc. etc. etc.
To the point... Try a new USB cable. The one packaged with the Epic is junk. As a matter of fact, it worked several times before it crapped out. I have no idea why, but I picked up a new micro USB cable, plugged it in, and the phone was then immediately recognized by my computer to allow mass storage mount.
People who tried the Palm Pre USB cable also had issues for some reason.
IMO, there should be a sticky posted in this board regarding the packaged USB cable, as I encounter this issue quite a bit.
Ok I'll try to find a new one really quick thanks
ugh tried an HTC Mytouch 4g usb cable and that didnt work either. Gonna try a class 4 usb stick and im gonna try puttting all of the files on the computer from the SD card
Edit: Oh wow i cant put the files on the computer duh
Edit: Ok now I'm mad a Class 4 SD card wont connect to the computer thru the epic ughhhh
I'm guessing during this time, you've rebooted the computer a few times? Sometimes, that's all it takes...
Try uninstalling ALL of the USB drivers associated with the Epic, rebooting the computer, then connecting (with debug mode OFF). Windows found and installed the USB drivers for me in just a few seconds when I did this [with the new cable, the first time].
- G
Have u enabled development mode under settings > applications (in your) epic? If not, try that, then plug in cable.
Then pull down the notification bar and it'll give you back the option.. again, if you haven't tried this.
On occasion I have troubles with the Epic mounting/ejecting on a Mac, but the only time I've ever had an issue with it mounting on a PC a different cable solved the problem immediately.
Try a different USB port on your PC. If that doesn't work, try rebooting the PC and the phone.
I had luck with trying different usb ports though
I had this problem as well and:
1. Tried 4 different cables
2. Tried all 4 on all 4 different USB ports
3. Rebooted numerous times
4. Uninstalled/reinstalled drivers
5. Tried 3 different PCs (1 other running 7 and another running Vista)
6. Did 1-4 on all three computers.
OH! and the reason I was so adamant about finding a solution was that I was stuck in Clockwork... due to having messed up an EXT4/RFS/CW2.5/CW3.0 installation... It was MY fault... I screwed up.
The problem was I had been living with the nonmounting problem by simply putting my MicroSD into an adapter and plugging it into my Laptop for file transfers... never expecting to HAVE to ODIN at some time...
Anyway... I ended up coughing up the $100 to Insurance and replacing the phone.
HERE IS MY THEORY: I think what my problem was was that the USB port on the Phone was messed up. I think these USB ports are possibly a hardware fail point and the changing of cables has been a patch on the issue with the port... NOT the cables themselves!
I'm not suggesting that you are there yet since it sounds like you can at least still get the phone to boot up (and aren't stuck in CW) and could still use a work around of putting files on the MicroSD with an adapter...
But I would suggest you don't be as stupid as me and get yourself in a position where ODIN is your only hope.
Yeah, it sounded like a bad USB port to me. Also, FYIY, if you ever have to replace the phone through insurance, tell them that the phone was lost. Either way, it will cost you $100.00 to get a replacement and when it's reported as lost, they will also send you a new battery...

You don't really think that I sent in a phone that was stuck in CW do you? I don't think that would have worked too well for me.....

My phone is a huge POS and I am ready to throw it through t-mobile's window. I have been getting a lot of hangs and crashes on my phone so I decided it was time to finally upgrade it. Well I have tried both my work and home PC's and my laptop. And the phone never shows up on the computer. When I plug it in, the phone beeps and asks me if I want to use Kies, Mass Storage, or Media Player. No matter what I select the phone is never seen by windows explorer, disk manager, or Kies. I have tried a few different cables and still no dice. I know the connection is good as it charges and asks if I want to mount the device. I figured it was software so I decided to factory wipe the phone, but that didn't help at all. I am at a loss, T-Mobile probably won't do anything for me. I am ready to jump ship and go back to iPhone, Android has not been a very good experience for me.
Ye sorry you had to get the vibrant dude. I would have gone with the nexus s on tmobile. Maybe try to enable USB debug. I don't know for a fact if it might help. Otherwise if you're willing to deal with it and put in a little time you could root it and run bionic 1.3.1 and just do the basics with it. With rooting you can go much farther but I dont think you care for much more than the basics. This phone is a great hardware unfortunately the software is not upto par. This isn't so much android as it is Samsung for crippling it with their touchwiz overlay and rfs format.

First, download your phone usb driver from Samsung and install on your PC or laptop.
Try these steps:
1. Click the menu
2. Click Setting
3. Click Wireless and Network
4. Unplug USB
5. Click USB Setting
6. Select the last option
Good luck

I know what you are going through. I have had to uninstall and reinstall the drivers so many times.
If you are able to get the phone updated to Froyo it will be much better. If you are willing to get your hands a little dirty, look into installing the famous Voodoo lagfix. It makes a night and day difference!
if you wanna update to froyo 2.2 i would suggest using kies mini
Going to bump this. Phone still is not recognized by any PC. It's not a driver issue. It charges, but does not allow me to transfer files or anything.
I have the two vibrant and one with your problem. The one with the problem was bought used and I'm sure that the seller had no intention of ripping me off because the from was the factory stock . Anyways it doesn't open as a mass storage or is detected in Odin. The best thing I could do was flash cyanogen or miui on it and that's how I keep up to date. I believe that this Is a hardware problem. Perhaps by water, dust, or who knows what. Nothing I can do about it.

If you had a Linux box to plug it into, you could probably find out more of what is going on. You could try putting the phone into download mode and see if Odin can see it. It could well be a bad USB port. You could take it into T-Mobile and ask them to try.
It's not an android problem, but it could be cheap Samsung hardware or bad software.
All three comps using the same os?
Same driver version for all three?
Is it recognized in device manager when plugged in?
If all you need to do is transfer files, then use Samba

I have had this problem before, make sure the USB cable your using is a data usb cable, and not just a charge cable, yes they do exist.
Look this might sound stupid, but try different cables, even a new one if possible, and ask them to test it for you. I had the same problem and I had a working cable (or so I thought), one day a friend lend me his cable so I tried once more, expecting the usual, but it was recognized by my pc. It was a bad cable all along.

This is possible, I was using a Generic cable and could not get Odin to recognize it until I used the official Sony cable at one time a few months ago.
Argh, I am pulling my hair out trying to solve this! When I connect my phone through USB to my computer my phone detects the connection but my computer doesn't respond at all! I bought the phone used and it is already rooted but is using a pretty old rom and I wanted to upgrade it. It is currently running "Kernel version: 2.6.32.9 [email protected] #4".
Things I have tried:
Using different USB settings on the phone (Kies, mass storage, ask on connection)
USB debugging mode
Different USB cables
Different computers
Cleaning the micro usb port on the phone
Formatting SD card
wide data/factory reset
Nothing seems to accomplish anything, it still reacts in the same way.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
The ROM shouldn't count.
First of all, has it ever worked? I just presume you're running on win7: did you installed the drivers as specified in several different tutorials on this forum?
What kind of connection are you trying to establish? tether, usb, kies, other? have you tried any combination possible?
I just got the phone a couple days ago, I have not managed to get it to be detected by anything yet. I have tried it on a couple Win 7 boxes and also a Vista laptop. I am currently downloading Ubuntu just to rule out the OS factor. I have just been using Kies to install drivers although after reading your post I found this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=961956
I'll try that and post results if that is what you mean? I have been trying to establish basically any connection at all for the ultimate goal of getting Odin to actually detect the phone so I can flash it with ClockworkMod Recovery and then an ICS rom. The phone detects the USB cable fine and starts charging and puts the phone into whatever mode I want (kies, mass storage, etc.) but the computer has yet to give any indication that anything is connected to it.
Try with the drivers, but be also sure to enable usb debugging to be able to select a different usb sharing when inserting the cable in case you haven't already.
The drivers installation didn't make any difference and I've tried USB debugging and all 3 connection modes (Kies, mass storage and media player), none of which exhibit any response from the PC.
Edit: Posting from Ubuntu now, same exact thing. Phone detects USB connection, and it doesn't matter which of the connection options I choose as the PC doesn't give any indication that anything has been connected to it.
That's really weird. Does Odin3 (which presumably works at a lower level) sees anything if you put the phone in download mode? ) this way you should be probably able to upgrade somehow.
Sent from my galaxys using XDA App
No unfortunately there is no response from the computer or Odin3 when the phone is in download mode and connected through USB.
that's odd and maybe that's not good at all.
I'm starting to think the problem could be hardware related, especially in a situation where odin can't see the phone in download mode (i.e. no software layer is interfering).
Is there any glaring damage/scratch/missing parts on the usb port?
Sincerely, if I could return it I would try that at this point.
Unless someone else has got anything else to try.
I'll take a good look at it under a scope when I go to work on Monday I guess. Thanks for your input, I'll try to update if I find out anything else!
So I took a look at the port under a scope today and discovered that one of the pins (the middle one) in the micro usb port on the phone seems to be completely gone! Not sure what each pin does but I'm assuming that one is probably used to communicate to whatever the phone is connected to...
Luckily I have access to a parts phone that I can take apart for a replacement port so probably tomorrow I will attempt surgery on the phone! Will report back with further progress after I have done so.
Well I'm happy to report that that was definitely the problem! I replaced the micro USB port on the phone today during my lunch break, put the phone back together and plugged it into a PC here. It immediately detected the phone so I'm pretty happy! Guess I'll be trying out some ICS roms tonight when I get home!
that's great, glad you managed you fix this yourself, well done and enjoy your SGS
