Atrix coming to Sprint? - EVO 4G General

http://androidandme.com/2011/03/car...trix-and-xoom-headed-to-sprint-4g-next-month/
Monster hardware - pretty much the best there is on any platform, but locked down software...
If it comes with Sprint ID (AOSP-y + easily replaceable Launcher) I might be in.

Moto + locked bootloader = fail
Sent from my HTC EVO

who cares about the locked bootloader. The phone is amazing without the need to root it.

I switched over to the Atrix for while before swapping it for an Inspire. I still have an Evo as well and follow this thread to keep up with whats going on. But anyways from using the Atrix for about 2 weeks, I can tell you that it's not all what it's cracked out to be. It is somewhat a snappy device and yes it's dual core, but it only uses 1 core. The 2nd core is used when using webtop I believe. At least that's how I understood it when it was posted in the Atrix forums.
The build quality is nowhere near the Evo or the Inspire for that matter, however, it does feel good in the hands. It's very lightweight when compared to the Evo and the Inspire and it has like a cheap feeling to it.
The screen on the Atrix is very vivid...I think they call the screen qHD or something like that, but it's nice. The super lcd that the Inspire has is a lot better in my opinion...but that's just me.
The battery is where the Atrix excels. I was getting about 15 hours on one charge and that's without overclocking and roms. The Atrix has the best battery when it comes to Android.
The two main reasons I swapped my Atrix for a Inspire is the bootloader was locked and motoblur slows the phone down a lot. The new sense on the inspire is Boss! It's smooth as heck with no lag.
But to each their own. I for one will not be getting this device unless the bootloader is unlocked so that I can hopefully flash a rom that removes motoblur.

Eh I'd rather have the EVO 3d/dual core.
HTC>Moto/samsux

Obviously I do which is why it's a fail.....I only speak for myself but obviously other people care ad well.

I wouldn't get it; you can't even install outside market apps without rooting it(it doesn't even have the option to uncheck unknown sources). Fail

I think that the inability to install outside apps is a Motorola problem but an ATT problem. The reason I say this is because the Inspire also lacked the ability to install outside apps. That was before I rooted it. Which by the way, just like the Inspire, if you root the Atrix you can install outside apps as well.

Have fun with that if this supposed Sprint version runs Blur. Androidcentral just reviewed the AT&T version and talked about how blur duplicated a bunch of their contacts and generally was a pain in the ass.

i won't buy a phone that has the bootloader locked tighter than a virgin on prom night.

I agree. It's a nice phone and works well with the laptop dock(at least from what i saw at a local AT&T display) but like plmiller says, it just feels cheap. Almost like the plastic is lesser quality and all the screws aren't tightened down.

Swyped from my pants, I'll let you figure out how.

I can't get excited about a phone with a locked bootloader no matter how cool it is.

why would you want a nexus s 4g?

i dont understand why people would want to switch to the nexus s 4g from the evo. It may be a little more up to date but its just AOSP. Evo can be rooted to AOSP too and many other types. I went over to the nexus s forum for t-mobile and all it is is aosp roms and it looks boring. I know it has a very nice screen and i like keeping up with the latest phones but i feel like thats not a big enough reason to switch, i see everyone drooling over this thing and i dont know why
Im board with the EVO
They convinced themselves it's better than a evo3d. And it's smaller so it fits in their purses/manbags better
I got two upgrades so I'm getting both, and yea it'll fit perfectly in my "European shoulder bag".
its a satchel.
EVO4G much?

We don't know if it is or not. Shouldn't make assumptions.
only reason id get 1 is cause the updates come straight from google.
Look on the bright side, it'll get me out of the evo forums.
1. Why do you care so much?
2. The Nexus S has had a fully working 2.3 ROM since December. CM7 is still not as stable, and just recently ironed out some major basic bugs. This will be the case for pretty much every major Android release.

I was going to get one, but I can't justify the money for a marginal upgrade. I'll wait for at least the EVO 3D before I decide. I'm content with the EVO until then.
I REALLY wish that Sprint was getting the Sensation instead of the EVO 3D
More likely verizon pushing them in that direction.

The reason I would like a Nexus S 4g is because it's AOSP and it gets updates straight from google. I love my Evo 4g but I'd like fully working AOSP. No waiting for updates from a manufacturer. That is worth it in my view.

I'm hoping the next Google device will be a dual core beast and comes to sprint...then maybe ill trade in my evo...the 3d doesn't interest me much besides that qhd screen (maybe Sammy can provide a qhd super amolled plus for smiles)

[Q] So the Nexus S 4G comes out May 8th

How will this help us epic users on may 8th?
The answer is still: We will have to wait and see how the source code from the Nexus is useful, which depends on which hardware elements it shares with our Epics.
Uh, well is someone going to supply an epic dev with what they need?

Or someone who's happy with they'd phone but hates the bugs. Hardware wise both phones may share the same cpu and gpu but everything else is better in the nexus s. Like the gps chip for one. While I do prefer the epic 4Gs looks the nexus a is a better handset in the end. I'm tired of constantly searching for that "perfect" rom. A pure google experience is the closest thing I can think of.

I don't see why you need to be insulting people who want to get a Nexus S 4G. It seems like a good phone for someone who wants to have the latest android releases immediately available to them. My wife is probably getting the Nexus S 4G as an upgrade from her HTC Hero. The main reason is that she loves CM7 on her Hero and I can't guarantee her CM7 (or future CM releases) on any other phone for sprint. You calling her stupid or in your words "nobody smart" is pretty ridiculous on multiple levels, but mostly because her reasons for getting the Nexus are sound.

That bug wasn't Nexus specific, it was common to android. One of the developers at Google made a blog post about it a while ago.
Yes, i see your point for CM7 on the Nexus...

Along with its HUGE Dev community and CM7 pretty much already guaranteed for it....
Screw the GS2 b/c after overclocking the Evo3D i doubt ill need anymore speed...
Yes the 3D is a gimmick but the specs of the phone is so tempting.
GS2 will be out like 2-3 months after and i don't see them getting updated till next year by sammy because we all know how that goes....

When I get a new phone....hopefully...soon, I'm not real sure what it will be. The Nexus just feels AWESOME in your hand but I'm used to the slide out keyboard. The GSII sounds awesome as well but we saw how the support was on the Samsung side plus TW makes development SO much more difficult.
The Nexus S 4G isn't really a step forward like the GSII or the EVO 3D will be. It would also be hard to leave the SAMOLED screen for Super LCD/TFT. Decisions...Decisions...
Been using a 3 years old Palm Pre and have been amazed at how it just works. The specs of the HP Pre 3 look to be pretty solid. I love how emails works correctly on the Pre. I hate the unreliability of email polling on Android in general.

I think he meant the Evo 3D. Hes torn between choosing the SAMOLED Nexus S or the SLCD Evo 3D (which in reality is a qHD screen).

[Q] Is this phone worth upgrading from the HD7?

I have a HD7 and im getting alittle bored of it, and the screen size is alittle too big. There is someone locally who wants my phone and $75. Im not sure if its worth it or not. i know it is hardware wise, but i heard the atrix lags alot compared to others xD Thanks.
the atrix is the fastest phone you will use ONCE you install another launcher. This would definitely be an upgrade.
The people complaining, are generally irked by the bootloader being locked (which will hopefully be fixed soon) and therefore are harder on the phone.

I returned the Atrix yesterday. I really liked it, very fast and an amazing battery, but I had issues with it. My main issue was voice quality. Every single person I spoke to had trouble hearing me. I also didn't like the camera, pictures didn't look good in my opinion. Also, had issues with gps not responding properly from time to time, but I think that was just an issue with my unit not all Atrix phones. Now I'm waiting a week or 2 to see if I get the Infuse 4G, that phone sounds sick!!

Lets go over this once. Sense, MotoBlur, TouchWiz, they are not just skins. They are woven into the android build by the respective manufacturers. To port to this phone you would need the ability to flash custom roms, which you can't do on the atrix. Yes there are a few like gingerblur, but those really aren't custom, just tweaked and skinned. Until motorola unlocks the bootloader (don't hold your breath that the devs will ever figure it out), there is no hope. This is why you probably won't see MIUI either.
getting past that, has there ever been a sense port for a non-htc phone? No HTC phone has had the same hardware as the atrix, so i'm betting it's hard to impossible.
not trying to be an ass, just making sure you understand. This is an awesome phone, just don't come in expecting all the openness of old HTC phones.

All these new phones talk

As you all know the Nexus for Sprint is out and soon to be (my favorite) the Evo 3D. But with this new 10$ add on bill for any smartphone you get (even if you have the data unlimited plan) seems to let me down a lot on deciding if i should upgrade soon. I mean if you think about it every time you get a new smart phone 10$ is added to your bill. so theoretically your bill can be limitless. Ya i know 10$ is not much but hell, im only 20 and in school for a surg tech degree, i cant afford that monthly extra.
I really have no point in this paragraph haha. I guess just be blessed for those that are getting those awesome new tech. and il Duce, youre the only one i know so far that is moving on to the 3D, so please dont forget us HeroC homeless that cant afford it .
Hopefully Sprint will get rid of this mental add on. But in the mean time thinks for reading my rant
I'll most likely pick it up. Despite the cryptographiclly signed bootloader, kernel, and recovery, it will still kick ass. I looked through my apps and realized that there are only a few apps I have that require root access. I'll miss my wireless tether, but Mrs. User has a rooted hero, so I guess I could use hers.

From what I know about signed bootloaders and stuff, you can still root the phone - you just won't be able to put any custom firmware/roms/kernels/flash radios, etc.
That's why I'm straying away from the 3D as of now.. I compile my own roms and would go crazy if I had to stick with the stock ROM and not be able to load my roms, or at the very least load CM
But at least HTC said they'd "Review their bootloader policy" We'll see if they actually do anything about it though.

I don't think the carriers really have much of a word in things like that (well, except for AT&T with the whole not being able to (easily?) side-load apps), though it's interesting to see other manufacturers becoming more open with their devices, and HTC going the other direction. Hell, even Motorola said they won't release such locked down phones now.
Here's to hoping we get a variant of the G2x.... with qHD.
I didnt know it was coming with a signed BL!! where do you devs get this crazy info at. This might change my plans.
But Yeah the 3d sounds just like a beast, but im just so addicting to moding. Man this is a toughy. I thought HTC was pretty open to opening the BL.. hope they dont pull a Steve Jobs =(
If you want to boycott HTC and still want Sense, get the Nexus S

Not just the bootloader, but the recovery and the kernel are cryptographically signed. With 256 bit encryption. Virtually uncrackable without a leak from HTC.

For a 256, that would be something. But alas, we all have.to.wake up some time.

Only way I could see it being remotely possible is if we set up one of those distributed computing/"donate your cpu time" clients to have thousands of computers working on cracking the key at the same time.
256-bit keys are srs bisness

If you look at what our amazing devs have done already, I would be the least bit surprised if they did it in no time

no need, HTC is going to unlock, click link in my sig.
+1 for our amazing devs...let the shameless butt-kissing ensue. Seriously, they've allowed my little Heroc to live on far beyond it's natural life-span.
FWIW about the new phones though, I was tempted, but I'm holding off till the X-mas lineup comes out. As the commercial goes "...then we must teach you to wait." The Evo 3D looks like a solid contender, but I'm shying away from the Nexus S...1) no microsd card support, and 2) it's a samsung (I'm the "proud" owner of two Moments...uuuuugghh).
With rumors about the Nexus 3 being made by HTC and avail on Sprint, if it happens, that's what I'll jump for. Here's hoping!

If no root is found would you abandon your OG evo?

I am aware that the devs are hard at work to find a root method for og evo users and they will most likely find one but just out of curiosity what would you do a root wasnt found? Would you get a new phone? What phone would you get would you buy a rooted phone off craigslist?

yes, if a sprint phone comes out that would be worth upgrading to and has root, I would be inclined to do so.
I wouldn't because its still a excellent phone for everyday usage ..
Sent from my OG EVO....
I ve been looking @ this photon. Not a bad phone and has been rooted. I would switch

I know that this question has already been asked before, but I am too lazy to search for the thread.
No, I would not go out of my way to upgrade and/or replace my phone just because it doesn't have root unless an easy way to do so presented itself. I would prefer to have a rooted phone, but since I will likely be waiting for a new generation (i.e. not this current refresh cycle, including the EVO 3D, Photon 4G, etc.) of phones before I do a replacement, any new phone I get will probably not be rooted right away (or if I get an iPhone, the issue becomes moot) so it makes no difference to me.
If I get an Android phone the next go-round, it will almost certainly be an HTC. Aside from the fact that I just like their form factor and think they make quality phones, they seem to have the support of a large portion of the dev community so whatever the FOTM HTC phone is will be what I get.
That Photon looks pretty fancy.
My wife got the photon and it just seems generic to me. All the widgets are plain Jane...I guess I've just grown acustomed to sense..

Which is already confirmed to not currently support the EVO 4G, nor is there a projected timeframe for when it might. Most of us assume it never will, because HTC wants to encourage people to upgrade.
Nope! cuz I waited for a long ass time to get this phone and regardless if there's root or not my phone is still the **** and compared to a blackberry...Mmmhmm Naaw I don't think so I'll die before I go back to that

Nah, I just got this phone at the end of June when Sprint was allowing 2 year upgrade resets. LauncherPro Plus allows me to hide the bloatware in the app drawer, and it runs really smooth for being stock.
If I get bored I could always activate the HTC Touch or Touch Pro, I regret trading in my Moment though; Still quite a bit of development going on with it.

I have actually been honestly taking a hard look at their newest QNX operating system and thinking about whether or not that would be something I could see myself moving towards. I have a BB for work and while it's substandard compared to my EVO (a lot of the reason is that the BES settings for government phones are very restrictive and lock out a lot of features) there are some things that just can't be beat about it. For example, I haven't plugged it in to charge it for three days and it's still got almost 75% of its battery left, and I get a lot of emails and phone calls at work.
I don't know. It would be a hard sell, but I have been thinking about it.

Yeah, my BB is a trooper; been carried around the house by a great dane with no negative impact.
I'm keeping the Evo until I am eligible for an upgrade, or it dies.
If it goes the way of the dodo, I would probably go back to my hero, until the next HTC phone comes out.
I personally would go get a evo3d or epic touch i used to not b into all this rooting and flashing roms but i love trying to find the next new tweak to make my phone more powerful damn you xda!!! damn you!! Haha jk
Sent from my og evo thats locked tighter than a chasity belt
I think a lot of people on this site don't face the issue you do since they've been active on the site and didn't foolishily upgrade to the latest OTA when it came out.
I think it's safe to say the majority of the people here in the EVO section still have root

I didn't take the OTA, I had to get my phone replaced. Your attitude is unwarranted.
