How will this help us epic users on may 8th?
The answer is still: We will have to wait and see how the source code from the Nexus is useful, which depends on which hardware elements it shares with our Epics.
Uh, well is someone going to supply an epic dev with what they need?

Or someone who's happy with they'd phone but hates the bugs. Hardware wise both phones may share the same cpu and gpu but everything else is better in the nexus s. Like the gps chip for one. While I do prefer the epic 4Gs looks the nexus a is a better handset in the end. I'm tired of constantly searching for that "perfect" rom. A pure google experience is the closest thing I can think of.

Don't think the Nexus is without its problems, from what I've read the screen seems to be very susceptible to cracks thanks to the curved shape and there is a bug with the messaging app that sends to thewrong recipient.

I don't see why you need to be insulting people who want to get a Nexus S 4G. It seems like a good phone for someone who wants to have the latest android releases immediately available to them. My wife is probably getting the Nexus S 4G as an upgrade from her HTC Hero. The main reason is that she loves CM7 on her Hero and I can't guarantee her CM7 (or future CM releases) on any other phone for sprint. You calling her stupid or in your words "nobody smart" is pretty ridiculous on multiple levels, but mostly because her reasons for getting the Nexus are sound.

That bug wasn't Nexus specific, it was common to android. One of the developers at Google made a blog post about it a while ago.
Yes, i see your point for CM7 on the Nexus...
Are you guys forgetting the Evo3D is right around the corner?
Along with its HUGE Dev community and CM7 pretty much already guaranteed for it....
Screw the GS2 b/c after overclocking the Evo3D i doubt ill need anymore speed...
Yes the 3D is a gimmick but the specs of the phone is so tempting.
GS2 will be out like 2-3 months after and i don't see them getting updated till next year by sammy because we all know how that goes....

I think he was referring to anyone who would be paying full price to go from our epics to its fraternal twin... now from a hero to a nexus, BRILLIANT! I would never be able to hang onto a phone that long though..

When I get a new phone....hopefully...soon, I'm not real sure what it will be. The Nexus just feels AWESOME in your hand but I'm used to the slide out keyboard. The GSII sounds awesome as well but we saw how the support was on the Samsung side plus TW makes development SO much more difficult.
The Nexus S 4G isn't really a step forward like the GSII or the EVO 3D will be. It would also be hard to leave the SAMOLED screen for Super LCD/TFT. Decisions...Decisions...
Been using a 3 years old Palm Pre and have been amazed at how it just works. The specs of the HP Pre 3 look to be pretty solid. I love how emails works correctly on the Pre. I hate the unreliability of email polling on Android in general.
O o plus the Nexus S 4G doesn't have an XDA section.....

WebOS simply bests android and ios in usability. Hopefully the crap that was wrong with the OS was hopefully solved. The way multitasking is handled is best among the mobile OS' that alone sets it above the others. Androids great and has a huge following. Same for IOS just too constricted. I dont need yall to agree either.
Anyway its my kind of OS.
I don't think I can agree with that. The new webos may be able to compete when its launched.. truthfully I've got my hopes a little raised but meh.
Let's just hope its not another disaster.

I will keep my beloved Epic until Galaxy 2 comes out for my Amoled fix,but will by HP's WebOS tablet so I will have best of both until HP fires everybody and start giving people full touchscreen phones that they want.

While I am not particularly interested in WebOs at this point I will say this...tablet is ok..Pre3 is nothing impressive..
I mean they are going with the same cpu as the mytouch 4g over-clocked to 1.4ghz and wait till summer to release it? thats not really going to stand out much against all the dual core phones...

lol.. well.. only more than 3% of the android apps have to be "good" in order to beat palms 100% of 5,000+.
but thats not the point. no one cares about # of apps (except poor W7 Phones).
seriously, no body switched phones for # of "apps". cough apple, cough, if 3% of Apple's App Store (+400,000) was useful, there would be over 12,000 useful iphone apps, and no one wants 12,000 apps on their phones.
but, i actually think the Pre will do good because Android is a POS getting their act together (we have to wait until 2.3 or 3.0+ for native Android video chat? are you sh*ting me?, wake up Mountain View, CA, you might be late, but you still missed the boat.). We have 4G (WiMax/LTE/etc), we want video chat on our phones, full web browsing, corporate email/calendars, and other standard features, and we want it to work, period.
The HP Pre 3 will hit a sweet spot of phone features vs. carrier support vs. developers. It probably will not be popular (overall), but, if you needed it, I'm sure it will work.
after that, its anyones game... blackberry, android, webos, ios, w7.. (+/- 3 years from now.)

McDonalds sells billions of burgers every year worldwide. Does that make them the best hamburgers in the world? Hardly.
Not to mention, how many of those apps are not actually apps? For example search for adw launcher, you get 100 themes or more... they're not functional apps.

i dont understand why people would want to switch to the nexus s 4g from the evo. It may be a little more up to date but its just AOSP. Evo can be rooted to AOSP too and many other types. I went over to the nexus s forum for t-mobile and all it is is aosp roms and it looks boring. I know it has a very nice screen and i like keeping up with the latest phones but i feel like thats not a big enough reason to switch, i see everyone drooling over this thing and i dont know why
Im board with the EVO
They convinced themselves it's better than a evo3d. And it's smaller so it fits in their purses/manbags better

only reason id get 1 is cause the updates come straight from google.

1. Why do you care so much?
2. The Nexus S has had a fully working 2.3 ROM since December. CM7 is still not as stable, and just recently ironed out some major basic bugs. This will be the case for pretty much every major Android release.

I was going to get one, but I can't justify the money for a marginal upgrade. I'll wait for at least the EVO 3D before I decide. I'm content with the EVO until then.

The reason I would like a Nexus S 4g is because it's AOSP and it gets updates straight from google. I love my Evo 4g but I'd like fully working AOSP. No waiting for updates from a manufacturer. That is worth it in my view.

this is the general section. and the nexus & evo3d or any future phone that will dethrone the evo is worthy to talk about here. it's upgrade time for most of us and probably most of the devs including toast. nothing wrong with having a discussion.
Knowing Sprint, we will probably get a keyboard variation of that phone. Epic 2 or Epic __, maybe a new name entirely. EPIC 3D would be funny lol (1st Qwerty 3D phone )
It does seem impressive, Samsung seems to be cleaing up thier updating track record too. The only excuse I have of not buying it is the weaker XDA backing. Not to say there will be none but I prefer HTC + XDA.

http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samm...n-Samsung-Galaxy-S-II-units-this-year_id18520
The interesting part is the rumor that Eldar Murtazin spread this week in regards to the Apple-Samsung lawsuit, about a Samsung Galaxy S3 upgrade that is coming late fall, with 4.5" edge-to-edge Super AMOLED Plus display of high resolution, and no hardware keys. These same features Apple is said planning to introduce in the iPhone 6, which will appear many months after the SGS 3, which must have annoyed Cupertino to no end.

Essentially, Samsung developed features for the Galaxy S3 that Stevie boy wanted to release in the iPhone 6, so Apple is trying to slow/stop Samsung in court, so Apple can be the first one to release those features.
I'm sure Sprint will get a variant of this, its the successor to the Epic 4G. I just hope that this time it doesn't have a hardware keyboard. I think this phone would be the best choice for the next Nexus phone.
Now that the Nexus has been released what is everything that we should be looking forward to seeing on our Epics because of it?

no, i wouldnt. the fact that its pure google will make the updates roll out way quicker. and the screen is 4.0 inches. the processor is the same, but it comes preloaded with gingerbread.
the way i see it, i like my screen just the way it is. super amoled isnt that much diff from super amoled plus. the curved glass is just a gimmick. and it doesnt need to be that huge. plus i like the keyboard on our phones. ive had an all touch phone before and it drives me nuts.
i guess its just a matter of opinion. im sticking with the epic tho.

No, I totally understand. I appreciate all the work that you guys do. I was just wondering if anyone knows what Epic users have to look forward to at this point. I know once the devs start tearing it apart it will probably reveal even more possibilities but at this moment I am just looking for any information that I can get my eyes on of what's down the road for us. Will this give us a chance at having a pure AOSP thats not CM7?
from my Nexus S! hahaha i feel like the n1 is a much more solid phone. even if the processor is worse, it still feels just as snappy on cm7. the only thing that drags is that there is no true multitouch... other than that, loving trackball notifications and the solid form factor!
anyone else "upgrade" to the n1?
a year and half ago I did . Welcome to N1 its an awesome phone and since you already have CM7 on it then you're gold. Good luck w/ the device!

I just upgraded too.
How do I find out if I have an AMOLED or a SLCD?
I upgraded cause the dev community is way better than on the nexus s, everything is just STOCK aosp or just plain old gr22 builds. Whereas here there is that plus sense and many more themed roms...oh and 720p recording.

just a quick question for those on CM7; since i already used search and all that
how bad is the wonking on cm7 nightlies?
just been reading around about wonking and i have never heard of it... i've had an xperia, desire and nexus S and never had "wonking." so just wondering about this. thanks!
Yep.. from the atrix
Well I'm using the atrix as my phone but I got a new SD card today and decided to throw the old one (the original that came with this phone) in the old n1 and decided to update this thing a few dozen new nightlies.
Wow its really weird feeling the old crappy haptic touch. This thing still holds its own tho!

I owned an ATT N1, sold it for $580 on eBay and bought a Streak, which I sold for NS to ditch ATT and then just repurchased the T-Mo N1 since they are so cheap now. N1 and NS are both nice devices for different reasons. I have CM7 on both and plan to jump between each as I feel like it. NS screen is much better to look at and touch, but there is just something about the N1 that makes me love it. Form factor and trackball alerts lead the way. I plan on keeping both and continuing to buy whatever is released under the Nexus line in the future.

Install a terminal emulator and type in "dmesg"
Scan the results for either "samsung_oled_panel" (AMOLED), or "sony_tft_panel" (SLCD).

the wonk has been fixed on nightly 74 and onwards. so its dead and gone! hooray.
Hmm, I was talking to a very friend (not a very nice one) and he was telling me I made a "stupid" decision upgrading from iPhone 2g to Nexus One. He said that with that kind of money, I should have simply bought a galaxy s or a g2.
This begs the question: Is the N1 slow compared to these newer phones? I mean, really, how does it compare? Can I expect to continue receive updates for the N1?
