Sorry somebody called and I posted the thread before I was done. I was saying I have a coworker who claims his friend at the Sprint store put a code into his phone that makes the server think its a store demo and gives him free Sprint Hotspot. I think he is full of **** and want to call him out but was just curiois if anybody has heard of such crap..

He's full of it, however there are free wireless tethering apps in the market.

Doesn't sprint just track the display models by their device id (the number under the battery, can't remember what its called). To me that seems how they would "write" that off, so if device is stolen they can track its use or shut it down. This is just me guessing please correct me if I am wrong.

Sprint doesn't even have tethering enabled on displays.
Do not become intimate with this coworker.

That I know I meant the data/voice part. Sry I could have worded question differently.

As far as voice/data, Sprint does keep track of the ESN #s of their display phones, if they see anything crazy (people dialing long distance and then leaving calls running, prank calling etc.) they will terminate the call.

If you want I believe you can go to your sprint account online and blacklist the number.
Is that black listing free?
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Its free you can do online in your account setting permissions or you can call sprint to block it
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Or install Mr. Number Call Block on your phone. I use it to send incoming 800/888/866/865 numbers and their built-in "suspected spam" list straight to voicemail. You can, of course, add your own numbers to block or exclude, and you can choose whether to send blocked calls straight to voicemail or simply block.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/mr-number-call-block/com.mrnumber.blocker
You can also add the number as a contact and then force the calls to go straight to VM. Click on the contact>edit>Send calls directly to voicemail.
I thought we'd all get a nice lol out of this ;-)

yeah.. pretty sure that anyone that knows how to root to get tether to work knows where to find the apk.
But according to the article the carriers can differ the use of their own tethering services and the use of tethering that Google wanted to be allowed in Android, basically even if it isn't on the market it's less people using the tethering and makes it easier to pinpoint and cut people off.
A) Sprint will likely follow suit
B) I didn't even know it was available in the market lol.

Sprint's the only company that hasn't followed in the major two's footsteps so far.
First being encrypted locked boot-loaders. Not one phone has been so encrypted that it's impenetrable. Then second being this. I think Sprint's taking the route of T-Mobile and going to support AOSP to the fullest. Of course, it's wishful thinking but on the other hand, it does appear to be the case...for now.
I would lie to know the source of info in that article stating that they can tell when you are tethering. I don't believe that is true. Data should be data. There was another article out and this was not stated, just the block. That is achieved by the market lkooking for the carrier's signature and not showing certain apps, like Verizon's NFL app to Sprint or At&T.
Sorry for the newbie question, but does anyone know how to remove the carrier IQ? It seems that if that is not there then one cannot be detected tethering.
I am a new EPIC user and rooted my phone using the oneclick method and RFS filesystem. Basically rooted just for tethering my tablets to my phone for occassional net access. So how do I go removing sprint's IQ? TIA!

Yup. Put on a ROM that has it removed. Read OPs in development ROMs
I had to post here.
I noticed this, and when I went on the website to install it, it said I couldn't "Carrier blocks the install."
I go on my phone, fire up the market, and it lets me install it from there.
So apparently, T-Mo just wants me to download it from my phone, not from their website.
Whatever, I didn't even know that there was a website for the market till like a week ago. xD
Currently, putting a rom on is the only way to remove it.
There its also the factor of how much data is used - generally, a tethered device like a computer or game console would use more data than the phone by itself. If Sprint sees an unusual amount of data being downloaded, they might be able to consider that proof enough (just speculation, I'm not an expert but it is plausible)
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
i think sprint cares just a little less because their data plans are truly unlimited. my phone is my only source of internet. i use it to download movies and games and everything else. i use about 9-30Gb of data a month. and 've been doing it for over a year. no one has terminated my contract or throttled my data speeds or anything. they put up with it as long as i pay my bill.

It wouldn't be bad, but if a company doesn't have the IMEI numbers they can't force you to pay for data. At least I think that's what they are getting at. That and/or they can get dumb phone internet for cheaper since it won't be registered as a smartphone (but as an "other" or unidentified).
I could be way off though.

Tmo didn't have our phones imei so when I bought my phone cash I didn't need data.. what don't you get?
Sent from my NookColor using Tapatalk
They don't need your phone's IMEI to tell if its a smart phone or not, as soon as you plug in the sim card they know what phone you have.
That being said, that cad from Samsung is definitely fake. I have gotten more professional looking letters from my cable company.
So my mom disabled my text n 3g, can I just use a Verizon PRL for awhile and connect to those satillites? Or is my phone just blocked from connecting to anything?

Satellites are orbiting in the upper atmosphere, whereas cell towers are... towers...
And no matter how you try to circumvent it, texts will still filter through Sprint at some point, so you're most likely out of luck on this one. Wifi is probably the only option for data, but standard texts still won't work if they're blocked on your plan

My HTC EVO 3D was stolen at school today. Yes, I'm pissed. And no, it didn't have insurance on it, so I couldn't get a replacement. In case it ever happened, I re-activated my Hero CDMA. I need to report its ESN as bad. Anyone know how to do that?
I believe you call Sprint and tell them. They'll then see your device and lock it up so it can't be activated on another number.
Correct me if I'm wrong though lol.

Umm you could then track it down/ call the police on them
The phone doesn't have location services built in? Windows phone does... just figured Androids would also. On my Titan, i can go online and it will que the phone and zoom into it's location within a few blocks. If it's near a window, or in a car it will zoom in enough that i can tell what side of the house it's on.
There's an app called "Plan B" that you can remotely download and it'll send you a email with gps locations, lock the phone, etc. Great app for getting after you've had a phone lost or stolen.

I totally agree. This way can help you.
No luck with the Plan B app yesterday. I did happen to find out the last known location on Google Latitude on PC, and it happens to be near the school. Problem is, I don't know if the location is accurate as the phone's GPS is jumpy, so it could be any of the houses surrounding the location.
I don't know if the person, who has my EVO 3D, turned it off now (probably did unless he found a USB cable for it). Don't even know if it's still at that location. My only choice is to get someone over 18 to file a police report.
I am in serious trouble now.
Too late for him now though

Next time, Android Lost... it's has tracking, remote wipe, alarm, remote lock, etc. It's free unlike most of the other similar apps. I never really thought that I needed an app like this but there really isn't any reason to not have it if it's free, and now I worry a bit less about losing my OG Evo.
(I am in no way affiliated with the developer of "Android Lost" , its kinda hard to recommend an app without sounding like a spammer )
