Phone stolen... need to report ESN as bad. - Networking

My HTC EVO 3D was stolen at school today. Yes, I'm pissed. And no, it didn't have insurance on it, so I couldn't get a replacement. In case it ever happened, I re-activated my Hero CDMA. I need to report its ESN as bad. Anyone know how to do that?

I believe you call Sprint and tell them. They'll then see your device and lock it up so it can't be activated on another number.
Correct me if I'm wrong though lol.

Yea I think this is about it.

Done. It's ESN is blacklisted.

Couldn't you just go to the android market, download an app to tell you where it is... ?

Yup there are definitely a couple of apps that can help you locate it...i think google offers something similar to this....i know WP7 used find my phone through windows live.

Umm you could then track it down/ call the police on them

The phone doesn't have location services built in? Windows phone does... just figured Androids would also. On my Titan, i can go online and it will que the phone and zoom into it's location within a few blocks. If it's near a window, or in a car it will zoom in enough that i can tell what side of the house it's on.

There's an app called "Plan B" that you can remotely download and it'll send you a email with gps locations, lock the phone, etc. Great app for getting after you've had a phone lost or stolen.

I totally agree. This way can help you.

No luck with the Plan B app yesterday. I did happen to find out the last known location on Google Latitude on PC, and it happens to be near the school. Problem is, I don't know if the location is accurate as the phone's GPS is jumpy, so it could be any of the houses surrounding the location.
I don't know if the person, who has my EVO 3D, turned it off now (probably did unless he found a USB cable for it). Don't even know if it's still at that location. My only choice is to get someone over 18 to file a police report.
I am in serious trouble now.

Too late for him now though

Next time, Android Lost... it's has tracking, remote wipe, alarm, remote lock, etc. It's free unlike most of the other similar apps. I never really thought that I needed an app like this but there really isn't any reason to not have it if it's free, and now I worry a bit less about losing my OG Evo.
(I am in no way affiliated with the developer of "Android Lost" , its kinda hard to recommend an app without sounding like a spammer )

Sorry somebody called and I posted the thread before I was done. I was saying I have a coworker who claims his friend at the Sprint store put a code into his phone that makes the server think its a store demo and gives him free Sprint Hotspot. I think he is full of **** and want to call him out but was just curiois if anybody has heard of such crap..

Doesn't sprint just track the display models by their device id (the number under the battery, can't remember what its called). To me that seems how they would "write" that off, so if device is stolen they can track its use or shut it down. This is just me guessing please correct me if I am wrong.

Sprint doesn't even have tethering enabled on displays.

That I know I meant the data/voice part. Sry I could have worded question differently.

As far as voice/data, Sprint does keep track of the ESN #s of their display phones, if they see anything crazy (people dialing long distance and then leaving calls running, prank calling etc.) they will terminate the call.

Yeah I know. It sucks. But unless you have better luck finding a way to reset blur than I did, I am afraid that is what it is.
I am amazed that someone sold a phone and didn't reset it theirselves. And you probly don't want their crap on your phone anyway. Not to mention, a nice reset will give you that new out of the box experience. So unless you are concerned about keeping the contents of the old user, (sayWHAT?!?) don't sweat it. Takes maybe 5 minutes tops for the reset. And you are in business.
cant u just flash the SBF ?
Go into recovery and I have the option to factory reset from there

Maybe I don't trust people, or whatever, but I just don't see someone selling an atrix, without at least performing a wipe.
For the record, I am not saying the op stole it, just saying it could be.

not saying it is either way, but the original owner could have wiped, booted up the phone and logged in with their motoblur account to check, and then handed off the phone.

OOOoooo, sounds shady and unethical.
Craigslist, (still shady but more ethical ) , ftw
Here's the Secret,
1. Sign up for TEP
2. Use the phone for two calls
3. Brick your phone on purpose by erasing the bootloader
4. send it in for TEP and request a Nexus S

Just got shot down. Said I had I power button issue and ****ty service. They said I needed to have my epic replaced 3 times before I wo9uld qualify for a nexus. I'm pretty slick. I've gotten replacements for nothing before, and I didn't mention the nexus until she did. Instead, she made me a service ticket and told me to take it to a corperate service center, since I told her I had been told to call the hotline by a 3rd party store.

So I found a guy that will swap me a brand new Nexus S 4G for my Epic.
Any harm in providing him the DEC?
Also, is there anything in particular I should look for on his Nexus? I have never done a swap like this before.

So what I have also learned today is that Sprint will check the ESN for you via the customer service line. Just call and give it to them.
Sure they can check it over the phone, but like others have said it is best to perform any purchases/trades at a physical Sprint store location. That way they can update the ESN right there.
I've heard of people purchasing a cell phone from CL and by the time they get home the "seller" claims to have lost it so they end up with a phone with a Bad ESN- in fact someone here on XDA had that happen to them.
Yeah, I ended up not doing it. Too many things that didn't click for me so I backed off. Not worth screwing myself over.

Skip wasting time with Google, they will do nothing, it has nothing to do with them. Call your carrier, they will suspend your account, which isn't a whole lot, and will most likely only block IMEI number with a police report, at least that's T-Mobile policy.
