You sure? Either way, it should fix it. If its not working for Android you turn GPS off for Windows, and then run Android. Just make sure WinMo doesn't have it so it can turn GPS on when ever it fancies. It's somewhere in the GPS settings. As Windows might try turn it on, before you lunch Android.
And apologies if it was a different issue, just that the forum is getting filled with people repeating the same questions over and over without using the search functions on the forum provided.

hello
to now we dont have a pure working version of android on photon, and you are asking about gps for this program.
let us go and see what guys did for the android on photon, and solve the main problems then we talk about the small things like this

After install and run Adroid on my htc mini, GPS not work on Windows Mobile
After Hard reset ans Reinstall and rerun Android I cannot set GPS on.
Is there a solution without rerun Adroid to activate GPS under Windows Mobile?

Read this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002178
Its a known issue. You have to deactive gps localisation in android to make it work in wimo.

Garmin Mobile XT Update

Has anyone had any problems with the new Garmin XT update version 4.20.40w. I updated yesterday and now it will no longer find a GPS located on com 4, it will only find the "GPS Intermediate Driver." If anyone else has experienced this problem, or has any answers please help me out. Thanks
I'm using DCD 3.0.0, with Sprint.

Sounds like a similar issue with 4.20.30. I would stick with 4.20.20, as that is verified as working.
Thanks for the reply roninld. I did not know there was an issue with 4.20.30, guess I will go back and downgrade.

Where can I get the 4.20.20 version? I don't see an option to download previous versions on their website.
I am currently running version 4.10.40
Version 4.20.20 can be downloaded here: http://www.gpsinformation.org/perry/gps10/GarminMobileXTforWindowsMobile_42020w.exe
I've been using "GPS Intermediate Driver" since start using Garmin Mobile XT. When upgraded to 4.20.40, it tried to hook up with COM4, but very slow. I went back directly to the Intermediate Driver.

I've thought about trying that and seeing how that works out. What's the difference between Intermediate Driver and the actual GPS on COM4. I wonder if there is any accuracy difference?
4.20.50w is now out from Garmin. I'm going to download it to my phone soon. I haven't has problems with Mobile XT. .3 and /4 have been fine with me.
hey guys, quick question. Garmin works well on my mogul, but i realized it's using the "intermediate driver" My main questions are: What exactly does that mean, and is it a bad thing?
I've tried setting it to use com4, but it searches and i guess automatically sets itself to intermediate. I'm running 4.20.50 btw

At least for me, it seemed like whenever I went to the Intermediate Driver, my time would reset back to a previous time date. That was one of the main problems with any version above 4.20.20wp that I ran into.
Thanks

Oh well actually i was just looking to find out what it means to be using the intermediate driver, as opposed to com4 and whether or not it's a bad thing.

I think i've deduced that it only screws up the clock if it isn't able to get a sat lock and then you exit. Otherwise it works fine for me, as long as it gets a sat lock, even using the intermediate driver.

.50w runs faster than the previous versions (screen response, route calculation, etc) I've noticed, and much more stable than .30w or .40w.
Seems to me tho that 0.50w will always go for the intermediate driver, and hence the time reset. 0.20w the serial com4 setting stays 'sticky' so no problem with reset time even if a lock not found.
I am having a problem with Mobile XT not closing the GPS connection correctly when you exit the application. If I shut my phone off/on and run mobile XT the program runs great with no issues. GPS is flawless on com4. When I exit the application there is no errors however if I try to restart the GPS never works again. Also the GPS will cease to function in other apps such as Google Maps. A soft-reset does not fix the issue either. I have to actually shut the phone off/on to gain use of the GPS again...any thoughts? Running DCD 3.2.6 and radio 3.42.50
Ok... This is the first time I've tried Garmin Mobile XT. I want to know what the hype's about. What am I missing to get this to work? I downloaded and installed verzion .50.. but without a "Registration code" It won't let me connect to anything but a Garmin device.
I currently use TomTom 7
Hehe well you need to install the app then turn around and grab city navigator to put maps on it. There are "sites" around that provide what you need. As to my issue I think I narrowed it down to when I actually lock the phone with windows mobile. If I do not lock it things appear to work fine...
Now why use garmin XT over the others. Only reason is NAVTEQ. Navteq maps are by far better compared to the crap TeleAtlas has. Living in Iowa, I think TeleAtlas forgot we were a state whereas Navteq at least gives a damn heh.
iGo8, Tomtom = teleatlas
Garmin XT = navteq
Gotcha. Ok.. I got it to allow me to see the GPS... now I just need the maps. I'm trying to get them off of my C330 using gpsdaemon. just not having any luck

Hey guys, XV6900 newb here trying to enable GPS...

I have been reading around and talking to friends about the Touch phone, and could use a little more assistance on enabling the GPS in my phone. Can someone please point me in the right direction?
Thanks,
Robbie
have you upgraded to windows mobile 6.1??
if so, then go to start > settings > Phone > Services tab > make sure location setting is highlighted, click get settings >then make sure it is set to on.
that will make sure that applications are allowed to use your gps signal.
then once you have done that,
open your gps, if you use google maps you have to click menu, use gps.
I have upgraded to the official verizion 6.1 rom. My question is, does gps use data? Is the gps a real gps that connects to satellites or is it some pseudo gps that approximates my location by triangulating distances between my phone and the nearest couple cell towers? I don't have a data plan and don't want an unpleasant suprise on my next bill.

Yes, the Vogue has a real GPS antena. If you read through the forums you'll find verizon users have to do a bit of tweaking to get it working.
It can be confusing, because our phones also support "agps". This stands for assisted gps. AGPS uses cell phone tower triangulation to get a position.
GPS has inherent errors, in the aviation world there is a system called diffrential GPS. This uses a ground based system to correct the time diffrential error in the sattelites for greater accuracy. Without dgps you cannot use the gps inputs for a precision approach, only enroute, terminal and overlay. We use other systems such as vor/dme. This uses ground based "towers" to get a position using radial and distance information. This is very similiar to what agps does.
to answer the question does it use data?
the answer is yes.
it has to have a data connection in order to receive the gps data.
atleast thats my understanding, as a data connection does start and maintain during my gps sessions.

No it shouldn't. The data connection you're seeing is probably initiated by the application that needs the internet for transferring maps like Google maps or MS Live search.
If you load up any independent GPS app that uses locally stored maps like TomTom or Garmin, then it shouldn't initiate any data connections.
thanks method man for correcting me.
i didn't think about it that way. haha.
Also a Newbie
I was wondering whether there was an app that I would need to install on my xv6900 to get the GPS working or do i need an external device like the TomTom Go series to get the GPS up and running.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thankyou

The reason it dont work is because GPS tries to connect one way, i belive its phone as modem. and when you browse the internet, it tries to connect as Sprint PCS.
now i might be wrong in that, but just lisen.
in order to fix it you need to do a registry change. get a free program to edit the registry. like PHM RegEdit.
got it downloaded? installed? good. lets move on.
open it up
click on My Device
+HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
+Comm
+ConnMgr
+Providers
+{7C4B7A38-somethingsomethingsomething}
+Phone as Modem.
go into that setting, make sure that the key AlwaysOn is set to 0
THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART
go down a setting from phone as modem to
+SprintPCS
the key inside doesnt have to be set to Always On, but you can enable it if you want.
now close it up. count to 20 and do a restart on the phone
next time you try to run any GPS app it should work. use GoogleMaps though.
also while you are in here you can go into ConnectionSharing. a key above ConnMgr. and make it so you can use your phone as a modem for your laptop. the option was removed in the 6.1 update. let me know if you wish to know how.

I called Verizon regarding the WM 6.1 upgrade and they told me to go to Microsoft's website and download it. Microsoft says go to the carrier's website. I'm confused. I'm using a Verizon XV6900 running Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Are we talking the same thing? Is there a newer version (6.1) than 6 Professional? If so, where can I get it?
Also, I've read about enabling the internal GPS antenna, which appeals to me, but there is so much info with different instructions, talking about Sprint and Alltel, radios, etc. Is there a good (read: easy) set of instructions for this? Also, a list of the possible problems encountered (function, data loss, etc.)? I don't want to be a pain in the rear, but this is not my specialty. But I could really use the GPS capability with my work (real estate) w/o needing an exterior unit. I currently use a DeLorme bluetooth unit, but its a pain.
Thanks in advance, Jim.

Here is the link to the offical WM6.1 ROM
http://www.pcdphones.com/phone_downloads.aspx?bid=95&cid=1&mid=302&carrier=Verizon Wireless
1. sync your phone with Outlook. You will loose everything on your phone when you flash the new ROM. Files on your memory card will be safe.
2. Unlock your phone with 2.31 & refer to the links below.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=20370
http://www.atwistedweb.com/xv6900/index.html
3. connect your phone to your computer via activesync & run the ROM file you download. Simply follow the instructions.
4. Your phone will hard reset once the flash is complete. You will have to align the screen & such. The very last screen will ask you to tap the screen to begin using your device. You have to be ready to soft reset your phone as soon as you tap the screen. DO NOT LET THE CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN OR YOU WILL BE SCREWED FOR SURE.
5.Settings--->Phone--->Services Tab select location settings & then hit the get settings button. Make sure Location On is selected.
6. Download the Holus GPS viewer & install.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=434408&highlight=holux+gps+viewer
post #3
7. Once the GPS viewer open hit the scan button. This will tell you what port & at what baud you GPS is at. It should be com 4 @ 4800.
8. Hit the open GPS button & hopefully you will get a lock.
phone keeps scanning for satellites
Is this normal? The GPS program ran and continues to search for satellites. Its alomst like it can't find any. I ran it just the way you listed. Anything else I can try?
If you are using Holux GPS viewer and you see red dots then be happy your GPS is working. Usually first lock takes longer. try it on an open place hopefully you will get a lock. The red dots you see on Holux are the satellites that your GPS is seeing, Once it gets a lock you will see blue dots and that's a fix. If it continues to flash red dots, I would try closing and opening port once, that wud restart the GPS.
Once you get a lock, use any 3rd party software like Garmin Mobile XT or Tomtom Navigator 7 if you don't have a data plan. If you have a dataplan then you can use goolemaps too.
Hope it helps..

No that isn't true at all,
I have both Tomtom and Igo with map files on the sd card. The phone needs the internet to get the agps information otherwise the GPS programs can't get a lock. It doesn't use much adata at all as I was roaming in the states (from canada) for around 10 days , I used the gps everyday and was only charged under $3 for the whole 10 days.

Here is the update you are looking for, now.... For the love of the lord, DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATION RUN!!!
Update your device as directed in the file, when the device updates and restarts, you will see a message that says something like "Running Customization in... 3,2,1 Seconds" or something like that, when you see that, stick the stylus in the hole at the bottom of the device and you will avoid a big pain in the @ss.
EDIT: Oops, i'm too late LOL, didn't refresh thepage while searching the update.
Can't get a lock
I just followed all the steps and installed GPS viewer and could not get a lock. I used the Verizon MR1 rom. Since that did not work I tried installing Valhalla GPS Server to see if that would help. No luck. Any Ideas?

I have data blocked on my phone and the GPS worked fine up until about a month ago. Whatever Verizon did blocked my GPS and I have not been able to get is working since. I can still run GPS viewer and see satellites but I can't get a fix on them.
I have everything working now. Thanks.
Just so I have it straight...
When I unlock the phone with 2.31, do I let customizations run? The ppcgeeks thread doesn't specify, but the atwistedweb thread says let them run. What does 2.31 do? Just unlock the phone so I can install the next ROM? Also, the ppc post talks about disabling USB while the other does not. Is there a preference?
When I install the new WM6.1 ROM, the atwistedweb post says to install it from the SD card, while the this thread says via USB. Once again, any preference?
I understand not to let the customizations run for this ROM and by putting the stylus in the bottom hole it resets the machine. After it comes up again, will the phone be (should be) upgraded and ready to use?
Lastly, if my phone gets "bricked" (I guess that means it turns into a battery powered paperweight), you guy can help me out, right?
Man, all of this just to get GPS and Verizon service. Still nervous! And Verizon won't shut my service off or stop tech support?
Thanks again. Trying to get all the info up front so I don't have to later. Jim

Make sure you have backed up everything. First you need to unlock with the .40 unlocker. Then flash to the sprint pre-GPS ROM (This will downgrade your radio which is said to be dangerous but I have never heard of anyone hurting their phone while doing it correctly. This will also require you to call Verizon and get a new A-key. If they ask you what happened just tell them that you had to hard reset your device because of a bad program. Go through all of their steps and it will all get fixed. You have to call Verizon because you wont be able to make calls.) DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! You'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). As soon as you see that pop up stick your stylus in the reset hole. Then unlock with the 2.31 unlocker. After you use this unlocker you wont have to unlock again. Ok now you flash back to the Verizon MR1 ROM. DO NOT LET CUSTOMIZATIONS RUN! Once again you'll know they're about to run beacuse there will be a pop up saying they're going to run in 3 seconds (or something like that). Now after you do this your GPS should be working but I was never able to get it to work with the Verizon MR1 ROM. So I recommend using NSFFAN's 6.5 ROM. Now when I unlock and flash ROM's I don't disable the USB thing your talking about. I also flash everything through my computer (USB) and not through the SD card. There is a small chance you can brick your phone but if you do everything carefully and correctly it's a very very small chance. Just make sure you are doing everything right before moving on to each next step. If a phone is bricked I don't think it can be recovered but i'm not 100% sure. Lots of times when there are problems though it's not a bricked phone and just a glitch so if you have anything that doesn't seem right just come on here and ask for help. Verizon won't do anything with your service except fix your phone like I said earlier unless you tell them what your actually doing. I don't know what happens then and I don't want to find out.. What they don't know won't hurt them Feel free to PM me if you have any questions or need any help.

GPS X9601

GPS problems
Ok so I have a North American GSM x9501...
Never used the GPS (Telenav isn't available to Canadian residense). This device is unlocked and NOT purchased from Rogers...
Downloaded Google maps, tried to use GPS and it wouldn't work. Set the settings manually Com4 57600 baud... It says searching for satalites, and has some HUGE number (54357734578) in brackets... GPS doesn't work.
Installed the HTC GPS tool, looks like GPS data is coming in, but can't get a fix. Then tried to use GPSgate, and it says GPS data is coming in but cannot get fix. Both of these two apps can't find any satalites.
Does anyone know what is up?

yep, go out in middle of a field or open Terrace or any place where you can see the sky above you head directly and then start google maps with GPS or HTC GPS tool or GPS gate etc , wait 3-5 min and then it should have fix...
cheers
I've given is some time... Probably over 5 minutes...
It's just odd, I have lots of experiencing using GPS software and devices. It looks like it should be working, the only odd behaviour is:
1) It finds no satalites
and
2) Google Maps says "Seeking Satalites (3874732644)" which is odd, because theres not that many GPS satalites, lol.
Change the Baud Rate to 9600 and see whether it will work.
Tried different baud rates.
Yesterday I let it sit for 15 minutes on google maps until finally it said there was no reception...
And I know I have reception because I was outside. Both my TytN II and HP iPaq have no trouble aquiring fix's...
download free VISUALGPS CE and install. Then connect it to COM4 and press start.
See the NMEA log monitor section. You should see lot's of data, if not, your GPS might be bad.
I'm unsure if your 9501 will work with the ROM's we use in Europe to make calls, and have GPS enabled.. If it's OK, I would flash Thai Hugo's Age of Reason and check again your GPS.
I'm using the factory ROM for the X9501 (Which does support GPS off the bat).
I used the HTC tool, and it looked like NMEA data was going through...

On the HTC tool there is option to see the satellites , check if its has any satellites on red color, if so keep the shift out in terrace or garden until 3 satellite color changes to green , have patience....
if it does not show any satellite on the HTC tool then probably you need to flash the rom with some new rom from the forum ..
Before you do that make a copy of your Stock/original rom ..see forum for instruction
PS: Since you have the stock / orginal rom X9501....would you do me a favour and check if you connect to head set and on Windows mobile side WM6, can you record a message and then play back and you can hear your self back .... I wanted to know if the mic works with head set on WM6 side...for the Stock 9501 ROM.
Cheers.

Can I ask another favour , do you have any registry editor installed on you shift.
if so , can try to dump/export the registry settings for HKLocalMachine (HKLM) to a xml ot reg file and then copy / upload the xml/reg file here .
we want to use head set with X9500 shift and are trying to find a solution , may be its a reg setting that can fix the problem.
Appreciate your kind help

I thought all the issues were fixed with the Shift's and headset usage?

Nope , the issue is we cannot use the head set in WM6 as the mic on Head set does not work....so we have to use the speaker phone and its not good for phone calls private or business.
I would appreciate if you can help us to resolve the issue , if you can dump the reg keys for HKLM / Drivers/inbuilt ... it might give us some direction.
Appreciate your support.

[Q] GPS doesn't work anymore

Hello androids,
I'm another n00b trying to kill my phone
I tried to flash some roms from this forum for my Tattoo, with different versions of OS (1.6, 2.1, 2.2). My preferences goes to Pancake 1.0.6; anyway I tried to see if all works and I get stuck with the GPS:
when I turn it on and start a navigator like NDrive or Navigon, they says "No GPS".
If I quit these programs, switch of the GPS from my tattoo and restart one of these programs (of course I tried one by one) they let my switch on the GPS receiver. Then back to the navigator, it tries to reach some satellite without an end. Also, there's no GPS icon in the topbar when the navigator, or another program that uses the GPS receiver, is working.
So I tried to switch back to a backup of my original rom without success. I also tried to flash another rom with 1.6 version like the original one, but without good results.
Can someone help me?
Yeaaah!
I've made a flash with the original rom for the HTC Tattoo and now it works!
Ok, let's retry some custom roms

Good evening,
I have the same problem.
I've switched back to the original rom but nothing work.
The GPS seems on but no application can use it.
Please help us .
Thank you.
I guess this is a very common problem on tattoo. My phone sometimes connects to satelites but sometimes not.I have tryed severals programs like GPS STATUS which show that there are satelites in view , but the programs just don't connect to them.Any solution ?
The Tattoo always needs a lot of time for connecting to satellites. If your inside a building it probably never will. So maybe that's the simple solution. Just go outside where it's got better connection.

My Tattoo needs less then 1 or 2 minute to connect to satellites, but now never. I've tested that the only ROM that is able to connect to satellite is the SP-Froyo AOSP. I've tried lot of ROM, my original nand backup, other 1.6, 1.6 SenseUI, 2.1, 2.2 but nothing to do. The only one is the SP-Froyo AOSP. Anyone can help us with this issue??? Lot of thank in advance.
You may try Ndrive 10 it is the only program that runs smoothly for me and connects to satelites even from my room.

What would happen to QuickGPS (AGPS Satellite Data Download) after Android NAND

Guys,
Just wondering before I jump to Android on NAND...has any workaround found for QuickGPS ? We need WinMO to download data the GPS satellite tracking data...Android programs like GPS Status are unable to do it (atleast when it was running through SD)...has it been taken care of
I use GPS a lot...infact for me its the most used smartphone feature..that is why i'm so concerned
Without QuickGPS...it takes long time to get a lock

^^ Hmm guess it does work...not many issues have been reported so far...thanks for the update
But unfortunately I can't update to NAND...i don't have windows 7..only XP
You don't need Windows 7 - XP works fine.
Sent from my HD2 using XDA App
ohh didn't know...some people were saying that in NAND and SD comparison thread....thanks for the info
No worries mate

Downloading satalite data with QuickGPS(WinMO) won't make any affect to Android-SD.

QuickGPS just updates a file in your /windows folder. (I've just did a quick search and this file should be "packedEphemeris.ee" in windows folder)
Changes in your /windows folder will NEVER effect your Android build. There isn't anything related to it.
You can ask this to every android developer on xda hd2 section.

No Dude...doing QuickGPS download significantly speeds up in Android also...i myself have seen the results and so do other people...Its very well known solution..check here..
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=788455
I'm not sure how it works though...but read in this forum only, Android on HD2 can't write data onto GPS chip, it can read from it though..which explain why programs like GPS status don't have much effect...even though they do the same thing...

No one can write data onto chip >.<
QuickGPS also don't write any data to chip. It just updates a file in windows folder, which is not related with Android.

Possibly true....i don't know the real reason, but doing QuickGPS does speed up lock, atleast for me...without it, it takes ages > 2-5min...you should check the results for yourself.

I think the same. In windows it was a file that was downloaded locally.
When I had locking issues I had to remove that file, reboot and do quickgps again.
The reason that using quickgps etc seems to work in Android is that you already start the GPS receiver and hereby actually already starting the reception process. So if you use that GPS status progran and it says that it downloaded recent data for your receiver you already started the GPS receiver.
I do agree on the fact that there is something seriously wrong with the GPS driver.
On the HD2 with all the tools/gps proggies you get a lock and then you start seeing the bars which indicate the individual satellite strenght.
On my used to be Touch Pro running Android, and in WinMo (also HD2, HD, etc) you first see the sats and then you get the lock which is the way it should be.
^^QuickGPS dosen't start the GPS reciever...it only download the data..
I dont start the GPS receiver...normally just do quickgps download and boot back to android and its as good as WiMo

I know that but most people keep trying with different proggies (meaning GPS test, chartcross etc) and those definitaly start the receiver before actually using the eventual program they intended to use.
I am using QuickGPS data download to speed lock in Android and for me that definitely works. I used Android for few months before tried that method and my biggest problem then was that I couldn't get a GPS lock under 10-15 minutes. First boot after that I got lock in about 10 sec and that continued. GPS lock was always under a minute. Not even turning the phone off and booting into Android changed that. I kept on clicking "download" in winMo QuickGPS after that and so far I am happy with lock speed. I use GPS almost daily and turning it off after use always.
I dont have any technical knowledge of how the whole GPS system works and cant really claim that it has to do anything with how fast the lock is performed but for me everything looks like it does make a difference.

I use strictly Android, well with Nand no dual boot, and it locks within 1 minute here which is acceptable.
