Hey guys, im on my pc, and im literally watching my phone press the return button really quickly, constantly for a few seconds at a time. I know theres a topic about the back button but im not sure if its the same issue, im running Cm7 with Honity, and I dunno what to do, ill be using my phone and suddenly it will spaz out and continuously hit back until were on home, then just keep pressing it!
I am running stock, unrooted 2.3.2. I also occasionally have this issue. I have not really been able to reliably reproduce this issue. Sometimes it happens middle of the day, sometimes towards the end of the night after the phone has been in use all day. Other times I can go days without having an issue. I had chalked it up to a quirk of my phone, but it is nice to see other people having the issue too.
Hopefully it is a firmware/software error and not something physically wrong with the phone. I would have to have to send it in for repairs.
i tightened the 6 screws on the back of the phone and i stopped having that issue. try and see if it will work for you
Yeh your not alone.
I have done a factory reset and not experienced the issue as of yet, its been 2 days, however if it should happen again i will try tightening the screws a bit.
Back button issue
There are a few longer threads in this forum about the back button issue on the Nexus S -- for some people the back button doesn't work at all, and for others it turns on all by itself. There were a few replies from a Google employee (ryguy) who said it would be fixed in an upcoming OTA update, etc. but some reported having problems AFTER getting 2.3.2 when the problem didn't exist before. There are also other reports of tightening the screws on the back of the phone, which haven't tried but seemed to improve things for people whose back button WASN'T working at all.
For my phone around 2-3 weeks after buying it I had the back button come on all by itself. I fixed it by doing hard resets, as suggested on an earlier thread that deals with this issue (it's like 10 pages long but has the complete story of everyone's experience and fixes with this issue). Anyway, the point is for me after the first hard reset the problem persisted, so I did it a few more times (like maybe 5 times) and now it's gone.
There are some people who tried a hard reset (factory settings restore) and the problem still persists but I think that you have to do as many hard resets as possible (like, over and over and over) until the problem disappears. I'm rooted so I did a Nandroid backup first, then did 5 hard resets through Clockwork Recovery (select the "Wipe User Data" option), and after five hard resets I just flashed by backup and I was back to where I was, minus the back button issue. You don't have to be rooted, of course, to do this, but if you are, doing that ROM Manager backup allows you to quickly reinstall everything to the exact way it was after you're done with the five or 10 hard resets or whatever.
If you're unrooted you can power off the phone, then turn it on while holding the Up Volume button. This boots you into Bootloader mode and you can navigate around to do a factory reset. Or, if you are rooted and have ROM manager, you can use ClockworkMod Recovery like I did (see other threads on how to use these programs).
Anyway, hope this helps - TC

It all started when I upgraded to a new rom. So the first thing I did was ditch the rom and install a new rom. I was running Black 3.0.1 and now updated to Black Satin.
The time it takes to lock up seems to very. I have had times where I could leave it for 4hrs and then hit the power button and it comes to life, other times I can have it sit for 30mins and hit the power button only to find it won't wake up. When it is in its locked up state, it won't even receive calls. It just sits there with the top right led blinking green. Its really getting frustrating.
In order to get it to come back I have to push the reset button on the bottom of the phone with my stylus.
I have been reading as many "lock up" threads as I can on the forum and so far it seems that most are to do with Push Mail. Which I don't use.
Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
I dont know if its a ROM issue as my does this sometimes (dont know about incoming calls as i dont get that many anyway) I am on the stock T-Mobile rom
I dont use push mail either
doesn't happen much to me (now i said i bet it does it all the time )
I think it seems to do it when i havnt soft restarted it for a while, so it could be that the lock up is due to memory or something and it just needs a soft reset to clear it down
I also have this problem, only a soft reset makes the phone respond. This happens sometimes when the phone has only been reset an hour previously.
It also happened once during the night and caused my alarm to not go off, so I only made it to the office for 10:30!!
Did you guys find a solution or did the problem just go away?
bump
got the same problem.
For me the problem went away only after I installed a new radio and new rom. I honestly don't know what was causing the problem. But it went away and I am happy. There might have been an issue with an installed app, but I never did find any app that directly caused the issue.
My capacitive back button is going crazy!!! I figured it was just the rom or a program running in the background. So I rebooted into recovery and it happened then too!!! Definitely a hardware issue. I didn't drop the phone and I wiped the screen clean. So I'm not sure what the problem is. Is there any way I can disable the back button completely and remap it to the Search button? I never use the Search button, so this would work for me. Please help!
I have had this happen to me, it would randomly act up. After two weeks or so, it just stopped happening.
I have seen reports on forums that some people have tightened the screws on the back of the phone and had luck with that fixing the problem.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
Yeah happened to me too when I first rooted it, found out it wasn't the root that did it but an application that I put on there that was not compatible with the phone.
I had the same problem too -- I posted this a few days ago on another thread dealing with this problem. I'm not sure why it's happening but it many people think it's a software incompatibility issue. I did five hard resets and the problem went away. Most people who tried the hard resets only did it once, and the problem persists. It'll even persist in recovery. I think you need to do enough hard resets until the problem disappears. Mine now is glitch-free -- good luck.

Try installing the stock 2.3.4 just for trial. The new update fixed all my issues with the back button
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
I had this happened on a recently purchased nexus s. It was on 2.3 stock, and the back button just went crazy, the screen would flicker on and off, and no matter how many factory resets I performed, the problem was still there. I eventually returned it and the new nexus s has been problem free.

Your new nexus s are using latest version or not?
I have this issue sometimes too. Mine doesn't go crazy though, it just becomes unresponsive and dark. I have to wait a couple of seconds and then it comes back. Kinda of like the phone freezing while the damn button come back.
Running Nexus S4G 2.3.4
I got my A7 and flashed the 4/17 rom right away, used it stock for a couple of days then installed dexters mod1.42 and for a day or two it worked fine. Then the menu key stopped working. sometimes it would work for an hour and then stop working again. I deleted the dexter mod, wiped cache and did factory reset when the key worked and everything was fine.
Then I did the bestialbub a7-gapps zipmod and everything worked great for 4-5 days then the same problem, no menu key. are there any known apps that may cause this problem? I am waiting for the menu key to work again so I can try again, are there any settings or other mods that will get me the market but leave me close to stock.
steamtv support just had me do a reset and flash latest firmware and that doesnt help much.
Please, I love the A7 when it's working and need some help.
Thanks,
Billy
Does this happen when the back of the device is hotter than warmer? I've had this happen often when the days are warmer and hotter. That's the reason why because the heat affects parts of the wiring. The other solution is to use Button Savior (an app on the market).
Ytain
The menu smart key comes and goes no matter the temp. It's not working now, sometimes it will work for a little while and then stop again. I can't wipe/reset without the memu key. I want to get it back to stock to see if it's a hardware problem then take it from there. Any suggestions anyone?
billy
same here (I thought, I'm the only one encounter this kind of problem). My Aunt gave me A7 as present. after 2 days, all the smart keys malfunctioned. it works fine for 10 min after that it wont work anymore. I've installed button savior for remedy. I think ytain is right, A7 has problem when the back of the device becomes hot.
Hello,
I had the same issues with some of the keys of the keyboard. but at first it started only happening when the battery was low but recently it was happening all the time.
This was making my life difficult as i write some sms to my friends and it's quite annoying.
I left my phone untouched and went to repair center of my provider to show what was happening. Put my phone there for repair and in the same day went there to pick up the phone good as new.
The issue is that the stripes connecting from the keyboard to the cellphone were a bit fragile and probably broke or it wasn't making any contact whatsoever. Now i have the phone working 100%. no problem.
Hope this helps
I'm having some serious issues with my phone. This morning the battery was suddenly drained completely, don’t know why yet. Then after charging the phone a bit and rebooting it, it constantly goes into driving mode and starting the voice command application. The most strange thing however is that when I choose to power off the phone, it shuts down but then automatically reboots.
I know I should try factory reset, but anyone else had this problem?
(I have original firmware and the phone isn't rooted)
EDIT:
Doing a hard reset seems to have solved the problem.
Maybe your power button is broken (constantly pressed)? Did the phone get wet?
I have not heard of this. I've heard of bootloops and the phone rebooting when trying to power off but thats usually due to custom roms and people flashing over other custom roms which causes conflict. I think factory reset may be the only option. However, with the Galaxy S there used to be a way to get into safe mode. I beleive you'd hit the menu button as soon as you saw the Galaxy S boot logo. I haven't heard of a safe mode yet for SGS2 but perhaps someone can confirm if its available in this model?
If you can still get into settings of the phone when its on, I'd try going into Settings > Applications > Manage Applications and clearning data for voice commands
It almost seems as though your phone is registering home button being clicked thereby turning voice mode on and also turning it back on after a power off.

Hi,
I was have exactly same problem, reset don't resolve my issue.
Solution was to replace my phone.
Thanks for the help, gonna try factory reset first. But this doesn't look like a software problem, so probably gonna need to replace it

Well this is a strange problem. Is it possible a bread crumb got under your buttons? Or some case is so tight it is pressing on some buttons?
Don't have a case around it, but the power button isn't stuck I think because wouldn't the menu for shutting down the phone etc. appaer constantly? And if it's something under the buttons then it is just bad design, had the phone only a couple of weeks.

I had the same problem mate. And that was exactly what I thought, I actually started a thread on this problem about 2 weeks ago. Was really strange, people told me to take it back. But What I did was factory reset on the phone. Which still didn't completely solve my problem. So I left the battery out the phone over night. The most annoying thing was, the screen kept turning on, like something was being pressed, can't have been the middle button, because the menu would have come up, it didn't do that. And then to make matters worse the tap to speak driving mode kept coming up.
I then took out the battery and left it out over night. Put it back in, in the morning. Charged it up. Didn't do it again.
Hope that helps. Try it.
Ok thanks, I will try it. It is really a strange problem as you say. After the factory reset the problem showed up again but not as often as before. Also after upgrading to latest firmware today, according to the battery monitor android OS is using 45%, that looks really strange to me.
This is really starting to get on my nerves now. Ever since I got my new S10+ from AT&T, it's occasionally done this thing where after I reboot the phone, I unlock it, and it briefly says "starting phone" on the home screen, and then will mysteriously do a quick reset, where it skips the AT&T logo and jingle, and just shows the Samsung splash screen , then takes me back to the lockscreen and it's usually fine after that.
However, Just now I decided to reset my phone, like one should do periodically, and it did the strange double reset after unlocking... Then when I unlocked it, after the "starting phone" message I tried to open a browser, and BAM! Quick reset again! Unlocked, let it start up, tried to open an app, BAM quick reset again after the screen briefly shifted from landscape to portrait mode (even though I was still holding it long ways in landscape position). Its never done this before and I'm getting concerned. It's never randomly reset while using the phone, this only happens right after a reset.
Any ideas? I've already tried wiping partition cache after big updates, doing soft resets. I'm worried that I'm going to have to end up resorting to a factory wipe, as others suggested I do when I was having battery drain issues on the ASD3 firmware, possibly because of restoring everything from a backup of my last phone when I got this one. Because supposedly restoring from backups from AT&T, Google or Samsung has caused all sorts of problems for people. I really don't want go wipe everything and spend hours try to get it all back on here manually if i don't have to.

Dang... So it does appear to be an issue experienced on both Exynos and Snapdragon variants. I wonder if there is or will be a fix for this. I've been asking around and haven't gotten many responses about this problem at all. I'm concerned because it seems to be getting worse than when I first got the phone.
I'm having the exact same problem. Sometimes it goes through quick reset, full reset, a couple more quick, then back to the Verizon logo, then starts up. Opening an app at that point usually does another quick, then full, then everything works. Glad I'm not the only one, but I haven't found any solutions either.

Mine does the same. Unlocked bought directly from Samsung. I don't reboot the phone very often so it doesn't bother me that much.
