Is it possible to go from Stock ROM to CyanogenMod via this path:
1. Using Universial Androot to root
2. Install RomManager from the market
3. Install Clockworkmod recovery 3.0.6 from Rom Manager
4. Install CyanogenMod from RomManager
That would be very easy compared to using adb. And it does not require a PC like the various one click root methods.
It should work?
I am asking because these optiions are already in the cyanogenmod wiki (some of them put there by me)
And if it works without problems, it should probably be the recommended update path.
I might try it out myself, but it requires me to go back to stock rom, which I haven't done before. If I understand correctly, it is not possible to flash a 1.6 ROM from a new Clockworkmod recovery, I would have to go back to maverick or amon ra recevery?
I am running Cyanogenmod nb 12, and clockworkmod recovery 3.0.6 at the moment.
to get back to stock rom, you just have to connect your phone to the PC, and double click the .exe of the ROM
I am not using windows, and do not have a rom exe file. I rooted and flashed my phone via adb on linux. I do have a nandroid backup of my stock room after it was rooted though.
Then flash back the old amonra recovery, before restoring your backup because it won t work with the latest clockworkmod

Ok thanks, I just heard from some one at cyanogen that using RomManager to flash the recorvery on a rooted stock rom won't work. So I guess the update path in the first post is not valid...

Uhm... I think not: is missing the "insmod tattoo-hack.ko" and it will fail the "remount" operation (and then the flash).
IMHO.

Yes, I think you are right. Stock rom needs the tattohack loaded before flashing a recovery.

Well, i had a CyanogenMod "installed" on my tatto, and i flashed it back to the stock 1.6 rom without installing anything, without problem.
i guess that's the question, isn't it?
I used the method you're saying, Androot+Flash Recovery from Rom Manager to the latest ClockworkMod and unfortunately it's not working.
I don't know if it is because the new clockworkmod but my advice is don't use this method. I posted some questions in other threads but nobody could help me.
I reflashed Clockwork several times even to 3.0.6, but the startup recovery menu still the same.

I am on a rooted Samsung Vibrant running Froyo and CWM 2.5.1.2. I cannot boot into CWM's recovery. I tried flashing CWM again and again, but I didn't work. I tried reinstalling packages at least 5 times and nothing. I just boot into the normal recovery. It worked the very first time I tried it, right after I rooted it and I installed CWM for the first time, then I had to reinstall packages twice. I used super-one-click to root my phone. I am using the latest version of busybox. I have given ROM Manager superuser access. I reinstalled ROM Managed. I deleted the clockworkmod folder and update.zip and installed CWM again. I have tried re-rooting twice with no success. What's the problem? It worked the very first time I rooted. But why not now?
I have this happen from time to time with ROM Manager....I just go clear down to the bottom and install an older version...say 2.5.1.1, hit reboot into recovery and it does, and then I update back to 2.5.1.2 and it will work after that on the newer version

Opps didnt see the Froyo..you need a modded 3e recovery here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
Yea you have to use the "froyo" version, but you will also need to delete slacker radio from your phone via titanium first. That is the only way it would work for me.

Damn...Im still half asleep.....I re-read your post...the update.zip has to stay on your internal sd... I saw you deleted it which is why CWM isn't working. ROM Manager adds to that file when installing CWM Recovery.

Sorry, I'm a noob to the Android scene, How would I restore to Stock 2.2 for Vibrant? Is there a guide or tutorial?

When you ran the script to get the recovery to 2e, did you put the phone into shell root first using super one click?

I am having the EXACT SAME PROBLEM AS THIS GUY. And it's really frustrating, I have been working at getting this ****ing phone updated to some version of 2.2 for about 5 hours now.
Just had to say that.
you on 2.1?
UPDATE:
I flashed 2.1.1.0 clockwork... whichever one was at the bottom of the list. AND I uninstalled Slacker Radio (dont know if that helped it for sure)
But After reinstalling the packages, then booting to recovery with the volume buttons down, I reinstalled package AGAIN and then CLOCKWORK INSTALLED OR WHATEVER! So now I'm flashing a new rom from it! thanks!

I ve had to downgrade ROM manager before also...so you might be ok to move back to 2.5.1.1 after your flash
Also, earlier today I did this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804305
So that may be part of his issue.
Clockwork seems to be hanging on installing my ROM right now...
is it normal for the progress bar to not move once it hits "Formatting DATA:..." ?
yea as long as it keeps saying Formatting, Copying, deleting...it will move if it flashes good..

When you did this where you on 2.2 (kA6) or 2.1 (JI6)?
im asking because im on 2.2 but for the life of me i havent been able to get clockwork to run. ive done almost every single step there is out there and have had no luck, but im thinking that my phone is HW locked so that may be my problem.
i can flash any stock rom through odin (JFD) (JI6)
and (KA6) through kies mini
but i cant get into clockwork recovery in any of those rom's.
I want to flash CM7, but everytime I try flashing Clockwork recovery 3, it ends up staying at 2.5.1.2. What am I doing wrong? I tried flashing it from ROM Manager and that didn't help, and I don't know if I can flash it with the fastboot method since I'm using CWR already. What can I do?
Additional notes: Right now, I'm running CM6 RC2. And my phone looks sexy.
Like you I also came across that issue but trying to install kernel in Ice Glacier. Now what you want to do is install it manually via console. Check my other thread all you need is the flash image and clockworkmod recovery. I myself flashed ClockworkMod 3.0.0.0 as other howoto failed and True's didn't stick.

Go here,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=916930
And hit on the link to download the cwm 3.xxxx
Once the file is downloaded use root explorer, navigate to /sdcard/downloads/ and find the recovery. Make sure that it shows as .img and not as .zip. if it is a zip then unzip to get the .img file
Select the recovery and change the name to some easier name like f.e cwmrec3 (nnow u will have a cwmrec3.img file).
Move it to /sdcard (root) for ease of method
Open terminal emulator and do
Su (enter) (# will change for $)
flash_image recovery /sdcard cwmrec3.img
Wait for it to go to the next line.
Reboot to recovery and ur text will now be orange. You now haz recovery 3.xxxx
Also, note that if u enter rom manager it will still say that you have cwm 2.xxx that does not matter though as long as ur recovery txt is orange and not green

the fastboot method will work if you have CWM 3.5.1.3 already. I did that this morning, and it worked like a charm.
so I was able to do the easy cw method installing the zip from recovery then choosing 2.5.1.4, but after a few runs with the latest builds of CM7 i was having major issues with my mobile data connection jumping from H to 3G, each time lagging out my connection and making streaming videos, etc impossible to play. So I reflashed to stock, and my H returned to normal. So i thought I'd give it another shot, rooted, downloaded ROM Manager, flashed to 2.5.1.2 smooth, then tried the above method. When I tried to load the 2.5.1.4 in ROM manager, it said "An error occurred while flashing your recovery." So I tried the terminal, and no matter how I rename the file, and I know I followed the instructions flawlessly, it says flash_image: not found. So while ROM Manager seems completely capable of flashing to the 2.5.1.2 version, nothing seems to work to get me past it. What could I be missing?

Thats because you flashed back to stock and stock roms do not have "flash_image" on /system/bin

There's your problem.
ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5 is for Gingerbread-based (Android 2.3) ROMs. Evil 4G is a Froyo-based (Android 2.2) ROM. These different versions of Android use incompatible filesystems.
How to recover:
1. Download CyanogenMod 7, a Gingerbread-based ROM, to your PC. Choose the newest release candidate (RC2) or the most recently Nightly build.
2. Boot into CWM Recovery, select "mounts and storage" and make your SD card mountable via USB.
3. Copy the CM7 .zip file to your SD card.
4. Install the .zip after a full wipe / factory reset
5. If you want to stay with CM7, also download the Google Applications (Gapps) .zip to your PC, copy to your SD card and and install it after you complete the install of CM7.
6. Boot CM7.
7. If you want to install Evil 4G, run Rom Manager and have it flash CWM Recovery 2.5.1.2, then reboot into Recovery, full wipe / factory reset, and install Evil as previously planned.
Thanks Ill get on it....
So could I just get CM7 on there then get an older version of clockwork to use the backup I made for the Mytouch rom I had before?
Or is the backup I made pretty much lost because Im using Clockwork V3?

Your backup was made with an incompatible version of CWM Recovery. It may not be usable. That said, some people have reported in the some of the many many threads on this subject that they have been able to restore a Froyo backup made with V3, while running V2. Your results might match theirs. The steps I show above let you stop at CM7 or continue on to Evil 4G, and do not include restoring your Stock ROM.

this gets you running with the 2 versions of recovery, one for froyo, one for gingerbread. whichever backup you want to restore, just use the matching recovery so your old backup is fine
I neglected to mention CWMR 3.0.0.6, that camrs73 just posted about, with a link to its main thread. This is a custom version of CWM Recovery built by option94 that supports both Froyo and Gingerbread filesystems. In order to install it, you need to have a functioning Android system first. You can install it =after= you get CM7 or Evil 4G up and running.
Ok thank God lol
Thanks for the Input guys Ill flash CM7 then download that Clock work and let you know how it went.

One more question...can I have more than one backup saved on Clockwork?
you can have as many as storage space allows and flash whichever one you feel like at the time (with the appropriate recovery of course)
Hello. i am new to the android family
i have a nexus s GT-9020T
i have rooted my phone but without setting the clockworkmod reovery.
today i was playing with the rom manager and downloaded one of the rom from the list. after installation i was unable to start the phone only seeing the google logo with the unlock logo.
i went back into the recovery by typing flash recovery recovery.img etc.
run a restore and restart the phone but still not work
my nexus s is 2.3.4 by the way.
please assist
What "restore" did you run?
Go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056062
And download the full rom:
Model: i9020T
Full Rom: GRJ22, KD1
That'll revert your Nexus S to the latest completely stock 2.3.4
Then you can flash recovery again and go back to clockwork mod and go flash another rom or whatever.
Remember when you're flashing a new rom you need to wipe data and cache and dalvik cache.
i run an restore from the backup that i made before installing the new rom using clockwork mod recovery, its part of the option when installing the rom using the rom manager * click box - backup * etc something like that

Next time don't use Rom Manager to make backups or flash roms. It's stupid and can get you issues like you're having.
Anyways, try wiping data and cache then restoring the backup, do it in Clockwork Recovery.
Let it boot, first boot always takes a while, 5-10 minutes. If you see the boot animation freeze, stop and restart, then yeah it's screwed up, otherwise, just let it is.
If still not working from your backup, do what I said in previous reply, just restore to stock 2.3.4 then re flash clockwork mod and start over with the rom you want to flash.

Are you running custom ROM? If you are, it's already made to not revert back to stock recovery. If you leave it stock recovery you'll get notifications for firmware updates by Google, but remember that applying those to a rooted phone might screw things up too.

Hi all,
I saw somewhere that lfashing CWM through ROM manager is unstable.
is this still the case? or can I safely flash CWM from ROM manager and have it stick through reboots?
also, do I need to factory reset when flashing custom recovery for good measure?
(currently I'm rooted with busybox only, stock ROM)
thanks
I'm not sure if it still does a "fake flash" of recovery through Rom Manager (?) The best way to install a recovery is through fastboot.
You could also install TWRP just as easily with the Goo Manager app as an alternative.

I haven't had any problems installing it through ROM Manager. Installed an update to CWM about a month ago this way and it works fine. Also just reinstalled CWM this way last night after messing around going back to stock and it boots into recovery just fine. I don't flash custom ROM's just do backups and installed su so haven't thoroughly tested it out.
If I have CWM flashed, if I do an OTA update, would I lose recovery? or worse does it cause any conflicts?
thanks

You won't lose recovery. an ota will not complete without the stock recovery. You'd have to reinstall your stock recovery for an ota to be successful

It's easy enough to adb sideload an OTA zip via CWM and you have the option to retain root IIRC.
Just search for adb+sideload+OTA.
