Alright, so I literally want to turn my Magic into a phone and nothing else. I want to delete as much system apps as possible while still keeping the device functional as a phone for calling and text messaging. I'm using Htcclay's SuperFast/StupidFast ROM, and I've already stripped it down quite a bit, but I wish to make it as slim as possible. This phone won't be internet enabled at all, so anything to do with networking isn't necessary.
Here is a list of system apps which remain:
rebootwidget.apk
TtsService.apk
TelephonyProvider.apk
Superuser.apk
Stk.apk
SpareParts.apk
SettingsProvider.apk
Settings.apk
PicoTts.apk
Phone.apk
PackageInstaller.apk
NetworkLocation.apk
Mms.apk
GoogleSettingsProvider.apk
GoogleContactsProvider.apk
GoogleApps.apk
GlobalSearch.apk
FieldTest.apk
DrmProvider.apk
ContactsProvider.apk
Contacts.apk
ApplicationsProvider.apk
I'm using AppAdmin to remove these apps. I just need to know what's safe to remove without affecting the phone's basic functionality.
Also, is there anything else I can do to save battery life? As you can see, I'm going for efficiency here.
Thanks plenty in advanced!!

Thanks!
What about the files with "tts" in them? TtsService.apk and PicoTts.apk - are those for "text to speech" ? if so, I don't need that. Or will that just cause FC's??

I hate to point out the obvious but why on earth would you go through all that? Just pick up an old Samsung Blast on Craigslist for $20.
It's like buying a muscle car and trying to detune it to get good gas mileage. It just doesn't make any kind of sense at all. You have the wrong tool for the job so just go get the right tool.
Or... I could not spend a dime and use what I already have...
I have a Nexus One as my main device, and I use it for everything 99% of the time. I only keep my Magic as a backup device in case the battery in my Nexus dies. My Magic has a near dead Wifi adapter, and only works on 2G with my provider. Therefore data is pretty much useless. As long as I can keep in touch with my contacts in the rare occasions that I can't use my Nexus, at least I have this.
Besides, it's not much trouble to install AppAdmin, check off the system apps I don't want, and press Delete. So far, this is the fastest I've had any ROM run on this phone. It does what I need and I'm satisfied.
Not to mention, it is still Android... which I happen to be addicted to
why would you want to do this? just curious
The phone is useless otherwise. The wifi is nearly dead. With my current provider, I only get 2G data with this device, so internet use is not even worth it. I'm left with 2 options: I could have a ROM bloated with stuff I'll never use, or I could slim it down, keeping only the useful things. It is merely a backup device anyway (see previous posts).
I have my phone set up the way I want it now. I'm satisfied. Just because you don't see the point of it, doesn't mean there isn't one. Let's face it, the Magic is a slow phone compared to what's available today. By removing apps I never use, I'm preventing rogue apps from running in the background. My Magic happens to be a 32B model, which has low memory as it is. Less apps means more available memory for what I do use. Not to mention improved battery life. After removing everything I have no use for, this is actually the fasted this phone has ever run for me.
I found the answer I was looking for. This thread should just be closed.
Fwiw I used to have a 32b device so I know how painfully slow it is. Have you tried unrooting to bone stock to see if the wifi comes alive again?
Sent from my HTC Glacier
I've done everything I could for the wifi. I think it's a hardware problem. I'm honestly not too worried about it, because I have a perfectly good Nexus One

Tried contacting HTC for warranty?
Sent from my HTC Glacier
I don't think the warranty will cover what i've done to this phone like I said, I'm not worried about it.
A while back, I completely disassembled it, and replaced the entire casing. It was originally white, but it's black now. I was careful, and everything was still working fine at the time. Over time, the wifi signal slowly deteriorated to the point where I have to be right next to the router to get a connection.

lol, wow... yeah you can buy another mt3g on CL for like $50 these days anyway.
a safe way to try, use Titanium Backup freezing the app you don't want, if it doesn't FC then you can delete it, if it does FC then you can undo...

I have so far only deleted Rosie.apk and all of the HTC widgets.

I'm getting Force Closes now. I can't find the apk associated with the FC'es.

im not sure, but didnt you just answer your own question? im probably wrong, but i think thats it. use root explorer and go on a deleting spree...
I wish it were that easy! lol
I searched all the directories for that file (com.htc.rosieutility) and its nowhere to be found.
I actually searched for *rosie* and all it came up with was:
/sdcard/rosie_scroll
/sdcard/download/Rosie_Icons.zip
Jesus ive searched the phone high and low. I am so ****ing lost. I dont know wtf is going on here.
was your search global? it seems you only searched your sd card...
why not just leave rosie and use helix? seems to me itd be the most stable.
The rom without rosie is very stable.. The only issue you will have is when you boot up, youll have 1 force close. After that the only time it comes up is if you are downloading something from the market. Which it doesnt even always come up.
For the most part the force close doesnt even mean much. I just got used to it being there. I never cared to look into it. But i will now.
Edit: also comes up when uninstalling something. but i dont do that much
Have you tried deleting
HtcAddProgramWidget.apk
hey fyi ic3 is completely aosp, and has fixed the utility issue. check his thread out, ppl seem satisfied.
Im pretty sure i figured it out
delete these
HtcAddProgramWidget.apk <-- If you havent already
com.android.launcher2.apk <-- I think this is what did it
I read the ice rom thread and all he did was use an older version of Launcher, so I just deleted it and rebooted without getting a force close (first time its worked)
I think that did it!
Sweet!
Yeah, I was getting the one FC at boot, and sometimes in the market, but I was also getting it while in the browser, sometimes in People, other times just at random.
I am using Helix.
So far so good.
Thank you!!!

I tried ic3....
I'm just not a fan of completely AOSP. I like the touch of HTC apps here and there.
I'm slowly getting FreshToast exactly how I want it.
Its super fast, and getting more and more stable even with JIT.
The only other thing I'm trying to narrow down is this memory leak type issue.
Sometimes with NO active running services or apps, the available RAM will drop as low as 55MB, then withing a few minutes I'll check it and it'll go back up to 70-80MB. Doesn't seem to affect performance too much, and I'm COMPLETELY taking a stab in the dark here but maybe has something to do with JIT?
I dunno. I'm going to try and disable JIT and see if the available RAM stays in the 60-70 range.
I just removed the HTC Mms.apk with the AOSP Mms.apk to try and cut back on keyboard lag.
I tried going with the AOSP/standard keyboard... I think ive just been typing on the HTC_IME keyboard for way too long that my muscle memory has been trained to it. I keep screwing up with the vanialla keyboard. Also the spell correct doesn't seem to work as well as it does the HTC keyboard. I have no vibration or sound, as well as no key preview to try and cut back on lag.
It seems that the actual spell correction is what is lagging the keyboard down so bad. If I turn off all spell correct/auto complete it seems to be much snappier.

it sounds like compcache is working
So is the memory increase a result of compcache compressing the data to the ramz swap space? Or the opposite? Ive been reading on google code about compcache and of course, I cant wrap my redneck head around it.
I seem to def. like this better than autokiller. ROMs with autokiller seem to kill active running apps too much, especially with the browser if there were a few flash ads on the site. It would just randomly close.
The only thing I'm doing now is going through the com.htc.resources.apk and changing the green to blue. I'm hoping its easy enough of just editing the pngs to blue. Im sure though, somewhere Im going to have to edit some xml files somewhere that have a color hex associated with it. Im just not a fan of green, and am getting sick of it hah. I like blue
is there any way you can compile a signed update that i can flash, that is exactly what you have, Fresh Toast 1.1 with no Sense and JIT enabled..?
I'd be more than happy to, if I knew how to!
I assume it would just be an update script, but i've never done that before.

Just make a nandroid of your rom.. Dont include the ext partition. And maybe delete some personal stuff. lol
You could make a nandroid.. Then boot up again, delete all personal stuff and sign out of everything. Make another nandroid (the one you can send to people). And then flash back to your nandroid of all your personal stuff back on it.
I think it would be easier to just make a tutorial as I didn't really do anything that hard. Just removed some files here, replaced some there, and re-configure some stuff.
As a matter of fact it may be easier to just zip a bunch of files, and make a batch file to do it, as pretty much everything was done through ADB.
I don't like the idea of nandroid, wouldn't want to accidents include some paid app, or risk personal data getting in there.
Actually I'm going to read up on making update zips. Sent from my HERO200 using the XDA mobile application powered by Tapatalk

First of all your device must done permanent rooted.
I had used this method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=930197
After rooted you can move/remove these apps from /system/app to /sdcard/backup via Root Explorer app.
- DemoMode.apk
- OnlineRegistration.apk
- Protips.apk
- QuickSearchBox.apk
- StartupWizard.apk
- TelephonyProvider.apk
- Phone.apk <-- when you move/remove this app an error message will show as force close, reboot your device.
Do it with your own risk.

And again with the TelephonyProvider.apk and Phone.apk. I can't understand why people want to remove them.
It's not because the Archos is not a phone that they are not needed to support the Android operating system and all the apps that you are going to be install.
TelephonyProvider.apk is only 49k and probably does contain no real functionality only entrypoints for other apps that expect the functionality to be there.
Phone.apk contains the complete contacts management and probably also some empty entrypoints that other applications expect.
So even IF you could remove them it would cripple about 50% of all apps you could install via the market.

I'm noticing this is a real bugbear for you!
I think people initially started asking about this because of this thread on the Nook forum. It was suggested that removing these would shut off the cell standby service, and improve battery life ... dramatically.
Have to say, I'm using Uruk 0.5, which has Telephony.apk and phone.apk removed, and have not had any problems installing any apps, using contacts etc.

have to say, no I didn't read much of that thread! Doubt it's something I would have bothered removing myself, but thought I'd mention that the setup I'm using hd them removed and it didn't seem to be causing any problems.
Though, if I do get odd problems with contacts, apps not working properly, I'll know what to check first, won't I
After removed TelephonyProvider.apk and Phone.apk I have not found any problem about Market app download. Contact app still work fine and can sync with Google contact.
I can't see noticeable battery saving by removing both phone.apk and telephoneprovider.apk; but agree removing them don't have any negative effects so far

Well, I did the same thing - downloaded then changed my mind and uninstalled. It's nothing more than renaming the telephony.provider and phone apk's so why pay - you need to be rooted to use it anyway so why not just rename them?
BUT - there's a big issue if you need to do a hard reset and also, you will not be able to get the update because as we know, the updating procedure checks for completeness of all the apps - if any are missing, it won't install.
I'm waiting for Acer to fix this (actually it's a Google problem since many other tablets have this issue).
Convenience, maybe?
It's quick, don't have to mess with remounting /system to read/write. And when it's time to take that update, just run it again and click "Enable" and they are back to normal. After an update, you can disable them again, if they haven't fixed the battery drain issue.

I have a way that seems to work for me... I downloaded power widget, made 2g/3g toggle, clicked it, then unchecked everything. (Doesn't delete or rename anything) and my tablet no longer wastes battery on cell standby
I've removed these (below) seemingly without any adverse impact.
camera.apk
MMS.apk
Phone.apk
TelephonyProvider.apk
Are there any other apks that the Nook CANNOT use, and could be removed without impacting the device? Like looking at battery use - Phone Idle is the 2nd most active... Can I rip that out anywhere?
My apologies in advance if there is a thread of this (for the Nook) - just post the URL and I'll read that.
There was actually a fair bit of experimentation about this a while back and IIRC it was found that removing the apps didn't affect battery life at all, since they had no hardware to power up to do anything to, but did cause apps to dissapear from the market instead.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
The only advantage I've found from removing default apps (besides the 10 MB or so of flash that is saved...) is that the Nook boots up faster. Once booted I've seen no differences except the expected FC if you try to launch an app that requires something that you removed.
Martian21
Even if it doesn't effect battery life, I tend to remove things that are of no use on the Nook. My list of removed apk's include:
Camera.apk
Cyanbread.apk
Email.apk (I use Gmail)
FileManager.apk (I use Root Explorer)
LiveWallpapers.apk
LiveWallpapersPicker.apk
MagicSmokeWallpapers.apk
Mms.apk
Phone.apk
Protips.apk
SoundRecorder.apk
TelephonyProvider.apk
ThemeChooser.apk
ThemeManager.apk
VisualizationWallpapers.apk
VoiceDialer.apk
After moving these to my SD card for safe keeping should anything go awry, I reboot immediately and haven't experienced any issues at all. If you don't reboot pronto, it can go into a force close loop, but after a reboot, everything's fine.

And in answer to this question, "Phone Idle" is just what the O/S calls it when your device isn't doing anything else (but is still "awake"). Replace the word "Phone" with the word "Device", and think about your car idling, and you'll get the picture.
Unfortunately they come back when you flash an update.

In order to increase battery life? As far as anyone can tell, removing APKs doesn't really make your battery last any longer, as the O/S doesn't use them unless called upon to do so. (If, for example, phone.apk was eating your battery, then you would see "Cell Standby" on the Battery Use screen.) Removing them (refer to the list ChrisDDD posted) can make the Nook boot up faster, but if some application tries to access them and they aren't there, then you can get Force Close errors.
A large "Phone Idle" percentage just means that most of your battery was taken up by your Nook sitting there, awake, waiting for you to do something with it. It is actually the lowest battery drain status you can have, except for Deep Sleep. If your Nook is not going into Deep Sleep, then you'll want to read through the other threads on this issue for ideas on how to fix that. (Turning Wifi turn off when the screen is off seems to help me.)

Not if you remove then from the /system/app folder in the ROM .zip file before you flash it. Grap 7-zip and have at it.
I myself try to keep my phone clean and running perfectly which contributes to great battery life...I just had to do a clean install and with the amazing root SD maid app it helps me keep track of exactly how many items are running, stopped, and that are installed... if their system, user or actual library.
before I had to wipe my phone I had on an average 36 items running in the background which is phenomenal. My phone performed perfectly... I could easily get 3 days and 8 hours sot....
What I use is an old app called "Total Commander "what's funny is it hasn't been updated for ages. Sometimes it won't uninstall everything unless you open the folder and uninstall the app itself.. It unmounts gets rid of it and then remounts ...I tried uploading some videos that I took doing it but this crappy XDA app won't allow me to do it it keeps failing if anyone has any questions just ask.... Nevertheless here's a couple screenshots before during and after but, to say the least I think everyone should have SD maid and total commander on their phone unless you prefer to run modules that can do it all for you... Those that thinks this is nonsense and please don't leave smart remarks just pass it up and laugh if you will I'm just sharing what has kept my OnePlus 6t in Tip-Top shape...
also I've done a lot of research on what certain apps are there for such as OnePlus device manager odm what a joke who would wants their info sent to China every 6 hours every day I mean come on. Lmao...
These screenshots are with the app. The app being deleted and then the third screenshot is showing you that the app is no longer there...
Also if you don't feel safe deleting the app you can create a folder on the internal storage I make my system apps folders in my Download folder and just move to that folder that way if you're paranoid and you think something may happen wrong you can just move it back....
believe me I've deleted everything that can possibly be deleted and the only thing that's happened is my phone runs way better.??
Yeah like this is exactly what I want on my phone ????

I agree. One of the reasons I don't run OOS is because of the absurd number of trackers and other stuff they have. A lot of their System Apps are Trackers and removing some of them causes a Bootloop. So I just prefer to run an AOSP ROM.
BTW, MiXPlorer from XDA works perfectly fine for removing apps from /system. It can also delete the Folders. Just make sure you don't have any Magisk Module that modifies System otherwise it won't work. I also had a Custom Debloater that would remove all apps that can be removed but I no longer have it. In my opinion, running AOSP is much better than OOS. Waay less tracking services and better Privacy and Battery.

And also if you don't feel safe deleting the app you can create a folder and the SD card that's what I used to do just name it "system apps" and instead of deleting you can just move to that folder that way if you're paranoid and you think something may happen wrong you can just move it back....
believe me I've deleted everything that can possibly be deleted and the only thing that's happened is my phone runs way better.??

Yeah I will eventually... I have to make up another list I wiped my phone the other day and forgot about saving that list... But if you don't want to wait the best thing to do would be download xXx no limits and then go through the profile that comes with that zip and that gives you a good idea of what you can and can't get rid of.

Here's a list thanks to Tomatot Debloater. You might just want to use that..There's a thread or you can just delete them one by one like I do...I just prefer to do it that way so if something goes wrong I could just move the system app right back...that's why it's good to just delete the app from the folder that way you can place it back in the folder where It came from...

AntHal is used for connecting to Fitness Devices like Bluetooth Smartwatch & Fitness Bands. Photos Online is OnePlus's Wallpaper app. Sort of. You can browse photos clicked by the Community and set them as a Wallpaper. Both are pretty useless. Unless you use them. In that case, they are not useless.

Your best bet is Tomatot's Debloat Script. It is available in the Cross Device Development section. Mine was based on that, just customized to my needs. It's actually pretty easy to customize it and Tomatot has a done a good job at explaining it in the OP.
Using this is generally unnecessary. I think there's easier ways to get rid of system apps and not have to rely on an app to do it for you. Just install a terminal emulator. Then run these few commands.
$su
#mount -o rw,remount /
#cd /system/app/
#rm -rf name-of-app-folder/
#cd /system/priv-app/
#rm -rf name-of-app-folder/
#reboot
This is just a quick way to accomplish the same thing if you run into problems with an app. If you mess anything up, reflash rom and it will restore all system apps again.
Apps I recommend to definitely get rid of are OPcommon log tool,OPbugreportLite..
all ODM ,,(OnePlus system service) and OnePlus System Service manager...all items on that list are safe to get rid of..
Although I recommend you to look into it yourself for educational reasons..
I got 10.3.2 running smooth and all junk ( intrusive bloat) removed and so far this update seems good to go...
