From my knowledge, constant roaming can reault in Sprint terminating your contract. Is it possible to use roam control to get out of a contract? Lmao. I was just curious as this thought occured recently. I like sprint and wont do this!
perhaps. although you'll get at least one letter asking you to knock it off first
From what I hear, you not only get out of your contract, but you are awarded a nice 5 year ban as well.
Not willing to test that theory since I prefer sprint.
I roamed for 2 months straight while I was in upstate NY with my hero. They never said anything. The online statement had my data usage in red tho lol

i dont know about the 5 year ban..but yes they kick you out if you use a looooot of roaming for 2-3 months
I remember seeing somewhere that if you use more than 50% of your data in roaming for 2 months they cancel your contract..no ETF
some get a letter, some dont.
Is this due to the fact that sprint doesnt charge for roaming? I am always being forced into roaming around my area and i live in a "huge" sprint area.

Not sure, but you can easily leverage them into a free Airave CDMA hotspot. They overnighted me the hardware for free and it costs me no money per month. I have two Epics in the household and only had to speak to a couple of representatives to make it happen.
As a result my battery life at home is much better, and no more roaming.

I have received said letter recently because my sister in law is at college in a non-sprint area. That was about four months ago and they still haven't terminated her line. So I have no idea if they actually go through with it or not.
Use the Verizon PRL. Roam Control will give you slow, 1x data. If you use the Verizon PRL hack, you'll get full 3G, which means you'll use data a LOT faster. The ban makes sense, but if you're leaving Sprint, why does it matter?
Also, they might take your phone number, but I'm sure they give you a warning beforehand to find another carrier, so you might be able to port it over, or at least to Google Voice first.

My buddy came from the middle of Minnesota and moved to Wisconsin in some area with no coverage andwas always roaming. They called him telling him that he was usng to much roaming, so he let them cancel it and went with a different carrier. He was happy though because he could not stand the battery on the epic, which I have haha. O well hope this helps!

It said exactly what a poster earlier said. If you use more than 50% of your data while roaming they reserve the right to terminate service on that line free of any ETF's. My wife called and said she was in college and we were helping her out by paying for her phone. Maybe that worked, I have no idea. Maybe they'll cut off her service today...honestly I hope they just leave it alone.
So you can sign up for a new account, roam like nuts, have the account canceled and sell the phone to make profit.
I'm going to test this ' if you roam too much, you're canceled'.
I'm going to use roam control and only roam next service period.
Anybody know of an app I can download to keep a constant data transfer going to rack up some gigs?

I just checked Sprint and checked my roaming data 1.3 gigs, but then it wasn't in red, and it said 1.3gigs/Unlimited
Yay unlimited roaming
It's been like this forever.
Sprint Data Used
459,509KB/ Unlimited
Sprint Data Roaming Used
4,384,848KB/ Unlimited
Be careful 50% or more of your usage/time on roaming and they kick you off the network.

That is incorrect!
They have the right to terminate/regulate/throttle your contract/usage/data, but if they cancel you, there is no ETF. I have spoken at length with several Sprint reps about this, and it is fact.
I have been concerned that they would try to cancel my contract because I have the PRL hack and have been over 12gb of roaming data for several months in a row now, since way before the Evo came out. But, they keep telling me it's okay. They even give me free bonus minutes for my trouble every time I call. The secret is to call it in yourself, and act like a concerned customer that just wants to know what to do, but be persistent, they will be more than helpful if you take this approach.

Sprint CAN cancel your contract for numerous things - including tethering without paying. I use ~ 20 gigs a month without paying for tethering. Never heard a complaint.

Here you go brother
Excessive Utilization of Network Resources: Wireless and Wireline networks have capacity limits and all customers can suffer from degraded or denied service when one or a small group of users consumes disproportionate amounts of network resources. Sprint Nextel, therefore, will monitor both overall network performance and individual resource consumption to determine if any user is consuming a disproportionate amount of available resources and creating the potential to disrupt or degrade the Sprint Nextel network or network usage by others. While the determination of what constitutes excessive use depends on the specific state of the network at any given time, excessive use is determined by resource consumption relative to that of a typical individual user of the Service and not by the use of any particular application.

Problem with that is, it takes 3+ months for it to actually get to you. If you're lucky you will get it within the 3 months but most people get cancelled at month 6 - but it will definitely work if you do, do that.

Yeah, that's actually what I was trying to get out of talking to them. I finally got one the managers to confirm in writing that I would be able to opt out all 5 lines for free if they decided to cancel/suspend me. I don't know how many of you have been kicked off for this (doubt anybody has as not one of you that do use the hack have ever potsed about it finally working) but please stop doing it, all youre doing is upping the costs for everyone. To get kicked off the network we all know you have to constantly roam (excessive roaming) however Sprint will still check and require proof of address to have your ETF waived, once they see you're constantly roaming in a coverage area you will still get stuck with the ETF. Just a heads up, we all complain about prices going up but there's also tons of people that participate in making costs go up.

Sprint's data service is so bad that many find it as essential. If I pay $10 for a PREMIUM data add on, I expect premium data not 200-500 kbps. I've yet to do the PRL hack but everything is so damn slow. Downloading apps used to take a couple of seconds now it takes a couple of minutes.

i kinda agree but then again i understand why they are doing it been fighting with data speeds to the point i thought about doing the prl hack to get released from my 5 phone contract
I just hate to see good things come to an end because of a select few. Prices are going to go up, no doubt, but there's no sense in having them go up faster. It's a lose-lose situation. Customers get less for their money and employee's get less (benefits).

Although I see where you're going with this, we are a very small percentage of the Evo owners. And a smaller amount of rooted Evo owners that actually user this hack. I know quite a few Evo owners that don't even want to root their phone, one of them being my wife. If Sprint set their plans up like TMO, where I could bring a paid off phone to their network and pay less monthly since I wasn't on a subsidized phone then it would different. Rates are determined partially about how providers will recover phone costs, and that is the ETF (obviously), but what about all the people that have paid there phone off by contract and continue to pay the same rates. This came to my attention, or rather opened my eyes when I wanted to add my daughter on our family plan with a blackberry that I had laying around. And even though it was paid off, it still required a 2 year activation..WTF...i didn't understand when I wasn't buying a subsidized phone, since I wanted the ability to shut the phone off for grades, behavior, etc. I mean why would I be responsible for etf for a phone that wasn't subsidized. I wish a plan similar to TMO would come to other providers.

You can start a line without a contract if you bring your own phone, don't let anyone tell you any different.
I encourage you to call Sprint yourself and clarify that. That is not the case when adding a new line. I can activate a phone under my line and not affect my contract, but adding a line is different.

...informing me my account was being cancelled for excessive roaming data usage. I knew it was being throttled and it's why I'm switching providers and already have a phone with a different provider. I wasn't abusing it, but when sprint changed the terms of their service agreement when I got my evo it put me in a bad spot because I work in the mountains of CO 2 days a week and have a lot of down time to watch videos. You're right, you are now because you're with another provider (and they all do except att that just doesn't have unlimited)
Sprint doesn't throttle phones.
I sort of want to be canceled because I want to switch to Verizon or AT&T.
I know how to do the Verizon prl. My question is, are they making you pay an ETF? And, if they cancel you, do the do anything with your ESN? Will I be able to sell my phone to cover the cost of a new phone on another provider?

I wasn't doing any of that and am not under contract with Sprint and haven't been since December. I'm going to bold what I'm about to say because you need to understand it.
This behavior right here, your behavior, is the PROBLEM.
It is EXACTLY WHY carriers get away with throttling and limiting and ****ing the customer.
It is EXACTLY WHY there is always a new law to bend people over even more.
You're not just ruining it for Sprint customers, you're ruining it for everyone in society and the day this is understood is the day we might actually be able to mature as a people.
Hey, I think you guys should lay off the guy. It wasn't his daily there was no Sprint coverage. And this is America, he has every right not having to pay an etf because Spring decides they've had enough. So bottom line, go troll somewhere else, this guy doesn't deserve it.
I feel bad for you man, hang in there!

If Sprint stops providing coverage in your area then they have to waive your ETF and that is a separate issue.
However, if you sign up for Sprint and you use the coverage and then just decide you don't want it anymore and therefore are going to abuse your way out then you can honestly go jump off a bridge.

Sorry, I forgot, it's "cool" to abuse situations in life whenever possible and to **** others over.
Our bad, bro.
He said he isn't using a verizon prl, it is obviously bad coverage. Not his fault.

Now you're learning man good for you! Living is all about bending life over and taking what you want. In order for this to work you will have to break rules and abuse the system sometimes. Nice guys will always finish last Matty.....
That's exactly what I'm going to do.
I'm going to abuse Sprint's roaming policy to get out of my contract.
If you don't like it, you're the one who can jump off a bridge.

if yall have been reading the prl thread then you know ive gotten my self into quite a pickle well as it turns out my situation just got worse. So i decided to go to the metro pcs store today to get sined up with them, because there the only ones that could flash my hero to there network. As it turns out though metro charges for roaming and at my house i wouldnt have service even though the customer care lady i called said i would. So that was a complete bust now my only option since i decided to finally get normal home internet at my house is to get verizon and get some piece of crap messaging phone without a data plan. So long story short starting on the 2nd ill be officially off android.
I wasn't following that thread, what happen? You get charged a ton for roaming or get booted for too much roaming?
sprint is supposed to be unlimited roaming, but if you exceed a certain number for x number of months they can kick you off there network.
oostah posted the exact number at the binging of the prl thread

I didn't know if you were on Sprint so I was just guessing. Yeah if you over roam you get booted. I didn't know about the 300mb data thing though, that's a concern having a teenager on the family plan.
I guess it's too late, but couldn't you just have someone eles in your house sign up and be back on Sprint?
Its just time for a change if I stayed on sprint I would just get a basic phone anyway so I could get Comcast internet the cool thing about Verizon is they offer a 18% government discount and since my mom works for the school system she qualifies. So I know this sounds weird but Verizon is actually cheaper than sprint in my situation

Sprint had discounts for teachers too. I'm on a 15% discount for my wife being a teacher.
im bout to go out to bestbuy and see if they have better deals, and i could never go back to sprint after what they did to me.

I don't know the details, but it sounds like you did it to yourself. But anyway, I could (maybe) never go back to VZW after what they did to me. My mom died, I racked up like $800 in overages related to it and they changed my plan to a more expensive one without my authorization which didn't even help the bill and wouldn't change me back.

Wow man Sorry to hear that Bro!
That Sucks!!
Cant you just tell them that your phone Never use to Roam before, and you actually Noticed it yourself just Recently? Also try throwing a little lie in there and say one of their Operators told you it was due to one of Sprints Towers being Down? It's Worth a try...
Good Luck!
We had the same problem, our phones were on roaming at the house and we was going to get booted, but they sent us an airave and now there is no problems.
Our service has never been better at the house either, we used to get a lot of dropped calls and terrible reception, but now everything is crystal clear
i also posted this in the epic forum, but since im sure a lot of you dont frequent it, i thought id post it here too. flame on!
title says it all. the admin fee is going from .99 cents per line to 1.50 per line.
all you have to do is call and (2 options) 1.) cancel and move on to a different company with no early termination fee, or 2.) try getting out of the contract and go month to month so you have more leverage to bargain for a better phone in a few months as you are now out of contract.
this is the notice that should be included in your next bill

YOU CAN FIND AN OLDER COPY OF THE CONTRACT BY COPY AND PASTING THE ADDRESS ON ARCHIVE.ORG
if you do want to cancel but want to save your phone number, try going about getting month to month, then porting out your number to a prepaid or gv, then wait 30 days, and port your number back to sprint getting new customer pricing on phones. (perhaps 3vo, sgs2 or photon for 99 bucks.)
For those of you who are considering doing the port out/ port in method you can port your number to Google Voice for free since Sprint and GV are partnered up (Thanks nkdumb24 from slickdeals.net )
personally, i wont be jacking with this. i already have upgrades available on 3 of my 4 lines and i like the prices. just sharing with the community.
Has anyone done/tried this and been successful? I know talk like this went around with some change Verizon did a.couple of months ago and they lowered another charge to keep the bill the same so people couldn't do this. I guess if someone has done this what did you say and what did you get?

Yes I would like to know also. Tempting but just not sure if it would be wise. Only place I would go is tmobile and we all know what road they are going down.

I'm thinking of switching to a prepaid service mainly because sprints 3g is so slow and lack of 4g except in spotty areas I rarely go to here.

I'm interested in getting out of the contract, let me know if it works if anyone else tries it...
I didn't read thru all of this but I cancelled my contract only after 4 months..not because I was unhappy but I flashed my nexus to boost to save money. I was ready to pay the ETF but when I got off the phone with the woman at Sprint she said I had a hundred and some odd dollars credit..I had know idea what she was talking about but I kept quiet. When I got my final bill it was nine dollars and some change..and thats the last bill I got! I have know idea what the credit was.
Edit..I original had purchased an Evo on the account..dont know if that matters.

This isnt really cancelling JUST because of the price increase. This is just a way for people who wanted to get out of their contract without paying the etf, since the contract changed.
im really considering doing this , im so tired of horrible internet. I rather pay more to have internet that isnt so damn slow . but i really dont want to leave sprint....

ok ill give u this one , i just checked my data usage . i only use like 1 gig so a data cap not a big deal to me, my wife how ever uses like 5 gigs on average with her damn spotify.
1-300 sounds terrible. Have you tried the data fixes on xda? I'd link but on the cell at the moment. I get ~500 KB/s on 1-2 bars of 4G. Anything over that is above 800. Try searching for those fixes, they helped me a lot.

When you have 4g it's a roughly 10x difference if not more. I average 7.5-9.3mb/s :3
Oh, when I first rooted my brothers phone he had bad download speeds compared to me (same ROM and kernel), but after the fixes he is comparable
