Well for some reason, at random times, when I press on my screen the notification bar will drop down. This gets annoying because It won't allow me to do anything. For example, if I were to bring up google and type something, each letter I try to type the notification bar will drop! ugh.. what could be causing this problem? is it the screen needed to be replace? any advice?
also I have to hold the phone in a upright angle in order for it to work properly. If I leave it,for example, flat on the table it won't really pick up anything I push. But as soon as I lift it up and tilt it, works fine.
I kinda have the same prob but mine will type different letters then i push and will even take overat times but I think mine has to do with the bad seal I got cause I have one of the first model's

Screen covers often times will cause this. Happened to me every few days when I had one. And fyi, I'm a mechanic, not had a screen protector in months, and no scratches. This screen is pretty resilient.

know of a step by step how to fix it? but before I do anything like that, how can I tell if I'm still under the 1 year manufacture warranty, I got this phone from private seller at a low price.

Mine did this over time eventually my touch screen just gave out and i had to go get a refurbished one
I am having the same issue with Sprint Hero CDMA. I tried clearing all factory settings, delvick cache, and anything else I could find to clear in recovery. I then used a RUU to clear it completely back to factory, still no luck. I noticed that what it is actually doing is for some reason it is sensing the touch only at the top. I figured this out while playing 'alchemy classic'. If i tried to touch any of the top icons, (for those that do not play it, these are in the same are of the notification bar) it wouldn't work. When it stopped letting me move the elements around, if i clicked anywhere below one of the top icons, it would select the icon above it, regardless of how far down on the screen I touched. I will be going to the sprint store to have them look at it, hopefully they will have decent news.
Im under my 30 days so I've takin my phone back twice already for a new one. The first on was a 0004 the second was a 0003 and now I have a 0004 again. It seems like the 0004s are a little snappier when launching apps and navigating through the general UI itself. Or am I just hallucinating. I'll tell you something else! When you first get the phone its set to vibrate when you touch the soft keys and the keyboard. The 0003 vibrated a lot more when you hit the keys which I didn't like. The 0004 is more faint vibration. I'll be trading thus guy in for a new one again this week because the screen is lifting already straight out of the box

WoW! So many in 30 days, what do they say when you take it in? I have one thats under the 30 and has one stuck pixel, I had decided to just keep it (0003) but if its really that easy, why now, lol. Do you get a fresh set of 30 days when you get the new one???
No my 30 days is up the 25th

But I think I can live with it

When I push down on the bottom .left corner of the screen I can watch it pill back up. From what I've read around the internet it only gets worse and to take it back if you can. Maybe radio shack is getting crap phones who knows. All I know is that I'm under my thirty days and its worth another try to get one that is exceptible in my eyes. It's not exceptible for a screen to be separating from the phone itself right outta the box. There are standards to be upheld.

I agree, I would not settle for a screen separating at all! I am gonna keep my phone with the one stuck pixel though. To much to do, setting phone up and all for just one pixel. My luck the replacement would have 2 stuck pixels! lol
Good Luck

I took my first one back right after my 30 days because the usb port was falling apart. Two weeks later, I took the second one back because the software was bugging out & the phone wouldn't boot. Neither were rooted & I have insurance, so it was super easy and free. I got this one, rooted it, and that was in December & I've had no problems.
I agree about the haptic feedback on the 003s. I hate it, it feels like a toy or something. I dial it down to barely noticeable in CM Settings, but the 004s still feel smother.
Today I plugged my epic into the car jack to listen to music on my way home. When I unplugged everything seemed fine, but the first call I got had no sound. I called my wifes phone to test and same thing, and she couldn't hear me either. I also noticed I lost all screen tap sounds, but my ringtones still made noise. So I tried to reflash the ROM I was on and it didn't help. So I odin'd to DI18, and it didn't work. So I went to sprint, bone stock and let them try to fix it, only to watch them fail as well. So I walked out of Sprint wth a new Epic on order, ad noticed that the sound screen taps would work and then just stop again. I got home and looked in the 3.5 mm hole and found smashed down lint was stuck inside. I used a small needle to remove the lint and what do you know, I am an idiot. Hope this helps someone out there.

I was suprised sprint didnt catch it while I was there. The assumed it was a software issue related to bad EC05 update. Whatever, I got a couple of dings on this one, i'll take a clean for free.

Luckily the epic hardware is a lot less flaky than the pre. The first replacement pre developed a crack in the side panel after about 3 days of light use. Make sure to give your replacement a good look over before you leave the store, if you catch any problems there you will likely be able to get a new in box phone.

all right. I've found various things about this on the web regarding other HTC phones, but I can't seem to find if anyone else has had this problem with their shift... This morning I realized that the "clear" button in the notification dropdown on CM7 wasn't working for me. I wrote it off as a weird bug. But then I tried to play angry birds, and I can't drag them back, they just fall right off the slingshot.
So I zoom in and I can pull the birds back, but when I get to this strip on the screen, they fly off without my picking my finger up.
Besides the clear button, screen presses generally seem to work, atleast when I'm selecting icons in landscape mode from my home screens. But the n1 style live wallpaper will respond to touches in this "strip" of screen by shooting off the lines around it instead of in it. Also, when I tried to drag to a different homescreen and stop in this strip, it will bounce back. same thing with notification bar. If I try to start dragging the screen from this "strip" I get no movement. The weird thing, of course is that this part of the screen isn't completey dead in terms of responding to touches, because it does register on my device that it is being touched, but drags, the notification menu clear button, the live wallpaper, and, of course, angry birds act funky when I use this part of the screen.
I guess I have to go back to sprint. I think I'm just going to flash a stock rom, but not unroot it.
I also don't have time, so I'm kind of just hoping it will go away.
ANYWAYS... anyone else having touchscreen issues with their HTC EVO shift?
PS: I think clocking my kernel at 800 instead of the 1200 I was using might have something to do with this?
Was running at 800 to preserve battery life, but back at 1200 after a nandroid restore and the problem seems fixed.
2 be clear, I had this issue on CM7 and MikFroyo, so I don't think it could be software related. But CPU clocking related.
Yeah, I also doubt that is the case.
My screen had a freek out. With out touching the screen it would open and close apps jump screens and when I touched the screen I would get no response at all. Had to RUU and send it in for a new phone it was in the connection with the screen. So the sooner you ask for a replacement the better.

did you just call? any tips? I'm wondering if I can handle this over the phone or not. Also - what did you do while you were waiting for the new phone to come in?
turns out it was the friggen screen protector. however, before I realized that I called my local repair shop and they said that they would be able to swap my phone out for a new/refurb one for $35. Too bad it isn't actually an issue, because I've noticed that the phone is a little less responsive to touch even with the screen protector off... it's just that its not clearly an issue at this point.
I actually had a similar issue with a replacement phone where the left side about 1/8" wouldn't respond (couldn't press q button on keyboard at all). After some research I found out about a great lil app to test screen touch response and any bad areas and it helped me diagnose that it in fact was the screen having a fault...look up "touch test" in the appstore and it should narrow down where and if your screen has a bad area that's not responding...it helped to get my in-store replacement in and out the store since I could show them the issue right away along side an in-store model. I hope this helps and I that I read the post correctly. Let me know if it helps you.

No problem...glad to help...it definitely saved me time...I installed it on my phone and the stores phone and compared them side by side...that way they can't give you a BS answer of "screen needs calibration" etc etc. Lemme know how it goes.

Sorry didn't respond faster. I just called them and they sent me a new phone next day and I sent them the old phone. Easy as pie no problems with the reps or the techs they didn't argue about it at all. It did take a long time on the phone because they were checking the phone settings no sure what this was but oh well. Just remember to ruu back.
Killer Shift
So they ended up still pretending that there wasn't an issue, saying that maybe it was just the touchtest app. It took a while to convince them that it wasn't just an app.. but after I left it with them for an hour (an hour where I'm sure they did nothin) I came back and showed them the issue again, compared it to the shift that they had, and they finally agreed to order me a refurb. A hassle, but a necessary one.

Agreed..It's awful how there is no set policies when it comes to service. Your fate pretty much rests with the tech you happen to get. Some are easy to get along with and some (obviously) aren't.

Have any details? Is it rooted? Unlocked bootloader? Custom Rom? Water damage? Has it been dropped? How long have you owned the phone? 3rd party launcher? Type of screen protector (if there is one)? Scratches on the screen? etc...
If it is running stock then I would use the warranty. If you are running a custom Rom then try flashing it again or something else. If nothing works it probably needs a new digitizer.

If it's all jacked up and your bottom keys don't work either it could be the pds partition if it is google pds partition fix and download and flash the appropriate fix for the version of android you are running.

Sorry for the lack of details. I'm running stock from bell. 2.4.6 I believe. Not rooted or modded. I have had it for 9 months and no water damage it major drops. One tiny scratch but on the other side of the screen.
My last test was to use the Touch Test app and when I run my finger across the screen and it detects touch all the way across except a vertical strip from top to bottom. For instancr I can't use letters w, e, s, z when in portrait mode.
I'm guessing or hoping to be able to get it fixed under warranty.

Yeah, warranty sounds like the best option if the phone is completely stock.

This is a known failure (according to the research I did) that will be covered under your warranty. Mine started doing the exact same thing after 6 months of ownership. There was a 10% strip of unresponsive area in the upper portion of my screen. AT&T shipped me a replacement and all is good.
I found several users who were experiencing the same failure that I was experiencing, so at least I knew it was not just me.
Yea I had the 10% top portion go bad.. Warranty was my only fix.

i will never buy another Motorola devices after experiencing this glitch from the Atrix. I had problem with the screen about two months ago, there are two horizontal lines in the screen that are non-responsive, and since i can't send in for warranty, i had to replace the digitizer at a local shop. after two months and many flashes (i was trying Darkside, Muiu, CM7) and now my screen is messed up at the same places they were wrong before. My experiences with Motorola have been very bad. Motorola in general is not a very good company

Have you been overclocking or keeping your screen in your pocket toward your leg?
The digitizer on any android will burn out using any of those because the phone will get too hot.
When I replaced my digitizer after accidently leaving it OCd all night and slept on it, I woke up with the same issue, and the connector was fried, it literally broke right in half instantly.
I do want to know, why is Motorola a bad company? They have made amazing phones for years, and a lot of them have been widely popular.
I had this happen with my first Atrix out of the box when I bought it. They replaced it at the ATT store.

I had a problem similar to this, notification bar area of my phone would not respond, AT&T wouldn't do sh!t about it until i took it to the local store and demonstrated its unresponsiveness to an employee using a touch test app from the market, it would register the touch and stop for about a 3/4" part of the screen and once i passed the broken section the line i was drawing would appear.
I recommend sending it back, this is my 3rd atrix due to defects. My second atrix had some severe issues, the battery nearly exploded lol.
I have lost all hope in motorola phones, too. Thankfully, i have only owned 2 that were smartphones & not nextels.

You don't make sense. I've owned a Motorola Nextel phone (i860) and it lasted my whole contract without issues, I then gave it to a family member who used it for a year. Then he gave it to a friend who eventually dropped it in a puddle. Not a bad run if you ask me. I then got the i1 boost android smartphone (not very smart) for the iden network (direct connect) and it lasted till I bought this phone. My cousin still uses my i1. My experience with moto has been great, I had this issue with this phone due to ocing, but they repaired it free of charge (At&t did nothing to help).
