Scratches on my scratch resistant screen - Focus General

I've owned my Samsung Focus since 12/26/10. I use it daily. I am careful not to put my keys and phone in the same pocket. I will admit to using my shirt to wipe smudges off my screen. It does not have a screen protector.
Is it normal to have so many small scratches all over the front of my screen?

I'm starting to wonder if there aren't some differences in Focii out there. I've only had mine a month, but it gets wiped, most often on the leg of my jeans, and has yet to have a single scratch, small or otherwise. I'll count myself lucky, but you should check out the gorilla glass thread going on here.

What may appear to be scratches could be the opposite of a scratch. Deposition of materials on the surface. I have a Motion Computing J3500 Tablet with Gorilla Glass. It looks like it has scratches sometimes, but it it actually fine marks from the digitizer pen. Some good hard rubbing with my microfiber cleaning cloths gets the job done.

Picture proof.
I'll use the suggestion of wiping hard with a microfiber though
edit: says I can't link you guys to the photo:-/

Quote from Samsung:
"Dear Paul,
Thank you for your inquiry.
We do apologize for the inconvenience. Apparently, the Samsung Focus is not using Gorilla Glass and we did not know how you utilize the use of your phone. If there would be scratches we advise you to use a protective screen on the phone.
Thank you for your continued interest in Samsung products.
Sincerely,
Technical Support
Kaye"

bummmer.....I have had mine since November 8th and no scratches. No screen protector.
I believe you still have to be carefull. Nothing in your pocket with your phone.
You have to use common sense here as NOTHING in this world that says scratch resistant is really scratch resistant.

Some sand particles in your pocket can scratch any material besides diamonds.

Huh, this phone has to be using Gorilla glass. I've taken my car keys to the screen just to demonstrate it to other people, haha.
That said, my phone screen has no scratches. It wipes clean and looks as good as the day it came out of the box. There are a few on the back cover, but that's it.

Had my first spill
First drop yesterday onto pavement. A few almost imperceptible nicks on the chassis, but the screen is as smooth and unblemished as day 1.

Hah, mines the same way. I dropped it twice now. Hit the back cover, flipped over, then proceeded to slide face first on the pavement.. the front black bezel looks like dogmeat but the glass is perfect I finally got a case just to protect that super soft front plastic surround..

I'm on my third Focus. My second one I had for over a month with a ZAGG screen protector on it. When I took it off to send the phone back to AT&T, the screen and back cover were MINT. They aren't cheap at $30, but I honestly think it was a very good investment. It isn't reusable, but has a lifetime warranty.

Had mine since Christmas eve.
Just wiped off all the smudges to take a look at it.
Looks like black ice to me.

I'm really not sure how I did it.. but my screen got a scratch on it. As a result I bought a screen protector from clearvue.
But anyway, here's a a picture I took to prove it:
[edit... okay looks like I need 8 posts to link a picture.. I'll update this in a bit]

I dropped mine on the gravel at the gun range on Sunday. Now, I've got a tiny chip and a crack across the screen. I guess I'll find out how much Samsung charges for repair soon...
Michael.

unfortunately, scratch resistant is not the same as scratch proof.

I heard Samsung put a layer on top of the Gorrila Glass to prevent fingerprint and improve smoothness of surface. Also I saw someone with Galaxy S tear that layer off(Just like screen protector). It might be the same thing for Focus.

Maybe it was Nexus S that have oleophobic coating on the screen?

Broken Glass after only 30cm down!!

About one hour ago, my Tab get down when i exit from my car.
About 30-35cm only, and see, glass broken... there is embarrassed for a terminal whit this price!!
So... someone have any idea about where i can find a glass for change it?
The glass is Gorilla Glass and should have stood up better, much better.
If I were you I would be asking Samsung to fix this under Warranty as clearly the glass has failed.
Gorilla glass or not, it depends on the way the Tab fell.

Gorilla glass is not indestructible. I got a scratch on my Galaxy S just from dropping it maybe 5 inches.
But that was face down on a gravel road. I am only mad at myself because it would be silly to expect any screen material to just take a rock getting slammed into it. The glass is tough but anything hard hitting it at just the right angle will still break it.

You obviously have not seen the You-Tube video where a chap fires from a compressed air chamber gun, THREE air pistol pellets onto the screen.

Actually I have but I think you are missing my point. It isn't about the amount of force being applied but rather how the force is applied. Like with my accident it hit at just the right angle on a sharp rock. BB's are round which leads me to believe the screen shouldn't be that easily scratched by them. But I bet if you tried that same exercise with a slingshot and a nice jagged rock the results would be quite different.
I have dropped it other times from much higher places and it survived just fine. It is all about how it lands and the TAB is pretty heavy so it doesn't take much distance for it to reach free fall speed. The TAB is going faster after falling one foot than another device that doesn't weigh as much. Sure they would eventually both reach free fall speed and fall at the same rate but the TAB being heavier gets there quicker.
Tomorrow i will try to call the customer care..
And what are they going to do for you? Tell you that your screen is broken? They aren't going to replace something that was clearly caused by mishandling. I know it sucks but you just have to accept it and be more careful from now on. There is probably a local shop than can repair it for you but as new as the TAB is they might have issues finding replacement parts.
I dropped my really hard from about 60cm up...face first onto a marble floor....nothing happened to it..
AFAIK Gorilla glass makes the screen hard to scratch. It shatters all the same as any other glass ;-)
Thats why they call it glass I guess.
Surface is hard but side impact looks like the cause in this case. My guess is if it had fell face down you would have had some and maybe possible no scratches.
Either way it just tells us what we already know. The TAB doesn't like being dropped. Much like a lot of other expensive electronic goodies.
I wish the TAB came with a lanyard because this thing can be a little slick and hard to hold onto. Especially if you swap hands half way through your movie and get lube on it. Almost dropped mine a couple of times already.
Again in the corner! If I see a picture of a device with a broken screen it is always in the corner. Think I'm going to get one of those ugly silicon cases:

As you can see the display is protected all away around the edge. I agree with jnutz, it is how the force is applied. Appearently those displays doesn't like a force momentum on the corners (or sideways on one of the edges of the screen)
OP, please prove me wrong because I really don't like those silicon cases, but did it just bounced on its corner or perhaps on the bottom edge?

This device is nearly 98% glass on the front with a thin strip of material bordering the screen.. it's going to happen exactly like you pictured it.

[INFO] Gorilla Glass can scratch!

Just an FYI for people.
A screen protector is always a good investment, it also does a great job of keeping finer prints down.

Yes, this is in regards to posts in the availability thread at the top. You would be surprised at the amount of people that think Gorilla Glass is impervious to all scratches.
also get a matte screen cover that glossy ass screen for the LOSS

I tend to resell my tablets & cellphones when I upgrade so having a screen protector on them is a must. Plus, I rather be safe than sorry.

Waiting on Steinheil ultra clear protector.
Have that on my Evo and it's great. So much better than zagg/invisiblesheild/etc.
I like the zagg/invisible shield for the reason most hate them, the orange peel.
Feels better, and it destroys fingerprints, and glare.

I posted in that thread about me not using a screen protector. I don't put my device in a position that it would be that likely to get scratched. nothing is impervious, but you'd be surprised at how tough good glass can be. I just can't stand how my device looks and feels after putting on any screen protector.
In my experience with Gorilla Glass (on my Droid X) I haven't put a screen protector and the screen is still flawless. I have had it sitting on my lap in my SUV and as I exited the car it fell face down on the asphalt. Metal was nicked, screen was gorgeous as ever...
With a tablet... who's going to drop a tablet... Dont waste your money.
unless you grind sand or a diamond on your screen then you really don't need a screen protector....
Other things that might break the screen like dropping it from an airplane will more than likely break the plastic shell of the tab plus the processor and anything inside..

were you purposely trying to scratch your device?
I can't imagine your phones getting scratched by a screwdriver or ruler unless you were purposely trying to do so. You would of had to used a lot of force and purposely and aggressively rub the ruler/screwdriver on your device...
The thing is... Who in their right mind would do that?
Gorilla glass does scratch. if you are unlucky it can scratch given a fairly light contact with the wrong item!
It is much better than standard glass. It IS scratch resistant. But it CAN scratch!!
I have a couple of scratches on my Dell Streak from being in contact with keys.
I also have a scuff, across the screen, from dropping on the road.
However.. I won't be putting on a screen protector on my tablet. When I carry it, it wont be in my pocket, it will be in a neoprene case.

gorilla glass can definitely get scratched, however i'v had my phone in my pocket with my keys plenty of times and the screen has never been harmed... The way I see it, if I do something terrible enough to my device that leads to the screen scratching then more than likely I probably destroyed the entire thing.
ive scratched my transformer, not sure how it happened!

gorilla glass scratches ??? YES!

Well i stratched mine ... actually my wife did. She picked a few shells from the beatch thru them in the bag where my phone was. Next thing that damn screen had scratches on it
Next day went and bought creen protector. I hate that because even if the screen is unbreakable, you can scratch it.
I do think that in normal use, that won;t happen but you you have a wife that loves sand ... and shells ... take care and good luck. I believe that sand will scratch that screen.
I would kill my wife
Gorilla glass is not unscratchable or unbreakable. Its advertised as stronger and less likely to scratch, but how much more stronger and scratch durable? My dell streak's gorilla glass shattered from a 3 foot faceplant. Granted it has a bigger surface area, it still shouldn't have shattered.
I never remove the factory screen cover until I have a skinomi or other type of protector ready to install.

There's also been three reported screen fractures. Two from falls, one from sitting on it. So it's definitely not unbreakable. I've got a Zagg Invisible Shield full body suit on mine. As far as encasing your phone in vinyl goes, it looks pretty good. It's dead if I drop it but at least it will die pretty.
http://www.zagg.com/invisibleshield...es-screen-protectors-covers-skins-shields.php
I stopped using screen protectors when I got a DHD and never had any scratches on it, nor have I on my SGS2. That said, I treat the phone like it's my baby! I suppose accidents can happen to anyone though.
Regards.
Having a screen protector will actually reduce chances of a glass shatter tremendously cause of the fact that the adhesive quality of any screen protector keeps the glass together making it less prone of shattering.
As far as scratches go, gorilla glass is definitely more resistant to scratches, but it never hurts to put a scratchguard on it, does it!

it is not the glass itself that scratches but the coating on top of the glass... I have the same scratch. If i clean the screen with a microfiber cloth i cannot see any thing but when i run my fingernail on top of it i feel uneven surface.
And if my finger is oily THEN i can see the scratch.

Scratches on your Xperia Arc/Arc S

Besides the Crack Issue on Xperia Arc, Lets Discuss Scratches on our Xperia Arc
My Arc is Misty Silver, I've been using it for 8 months, I don't use Casing(Leather Case/TPU Gel Case etc), just straight to my pocket, No Keys, Coins etc
My Arc don't have cracks or chrome peeling, some minor scratches on the screen though(shatter proof sheet still intact)
I have tried using ZAGG Ishield Maximum Coverage for Xperia Arc, but it didn't last long, It collects dirt easily on the sides, transparency becoming less, and some parts are peeling, also it can't protect it from the scratches I got, so I have decided to remove it after 2 months of use.
I have a friend whose using a soft pouch included in the box, but his arc also suffers the same scratches on my Arc

Here are some screen shots
And there is a hole on my Shatter proof sheet, I don't know where I got it.
my 4 months old misty silver arc had many scratches on the chrome(bezel and button) but no peeling.
And my 8 months backcover had many scratches too but i cant see it if
you not look really close/u need brightness to see it.
I bought my arc in april and they replacing it in october .
i always use capdase softjacket and sometimes SE pouch
My midnight blue one has the same on the battery door opening cutout and the back cover is scratched all over with fine scratches - only visible in direkt sunlight and the same is on the painted front parts. Screen and chrome parts are fine.
Using it naked and putting it in my pocket jeans without keys or anything else.
Really cheap stuff if it scratches from that.
It's 8 months and 4 days old

My midnight blue arc has some scratches on the screen and back cover, I kinda gave up using a screen protector, I might remove the shatterproof sheet if it gets really bad. A crack has unfortunately recently appeared above the light sensor, but other then that everything else is fine no peeling of the chrome, though the battery cover at the end when you pick it off has paint chipped off, no biggie though cos its just the back cover, if it gets worse I'll just buy a new one.
Since I got the phone in June I've used a neoprene case, which does the job well. I'd recommend this over getting gimmicky (and horrible) plastic covers which make the phone feel big and look ugly
You can get new battery covers on eBay for £5. I'm going to buy a couple as spares as my cover is getting a bit scratched.

The screen feels a lot better. Really easy to use. Smooth. But definitely is not easy to clean. It's a fingerprints magnet. About scratches, I've been using it naked for just a week on my pants pocket. I seriously doubt it will get a scratch. It is not a gorilla display, but the glass seems sturdy enough.

So, it was an unfortunate day for me. My Note 2 (GT-N7100) slipped from my hand from a height of just 1.5 feet (approx.). I had a flip cover installed. As I was walking, I as holding the device chest-high (i'm 5'10"). That was the height when the phone slipped form my hand. reacting in milliseconds, I tried to get hold of my beloved Note2 and even caught the flap of the flip cover. But, to my bad luck, the locks of the flip opened, and the phone fell on concrete face down from a height of about 1.5 feet. I thought everything is fine, but as soon as I turned the device to see the display, I felt like hell. When I checked the device, I got to know that it was the front glass that was damaged, but the touch and everything was working just perfect.
Now, the guys at Samsung service center told me that whole touch will be replaced, and it will cost me INR 7000. On a little Googling, I came to know that the front glass can be changed manually, but after watching a YouTube video, i knew that I'm not going to follow that procedure myself. So, I've decided to get it done at the Samsung service. Cant imagine a single day without these kind of devices. I'll get the job done soon...
From the picture we can see where the bottom corner hit first.
Sucks but that's what's going to happen if you get a good corner impact.
Doesn't mean that GG is easily broken. Just means you had a spell of bad luck.
Not just Gorilla Glass.. 90% of the time any phone, with whatever type of glass will break from that type of drop.
Maybe with the arrival of the flexible displays, will finally see phones able to survive a drop..
The display is pasted with gum onto the glass. Both will have to be replaced, sorry about that.

That's unfortunate. Many cases of gorilla glass on note 2 and s3 getting shattered. I use silicon cover which protects the corners. Flip covers offer no protection.

Sorry to hear that mate.
I've never liked those flip cases as I've always thought they leave the phone pretty exposed. Maybe look into a normal type silicon (thin case) and perhaps a tempered glass screen protector.
Thankfully I've not dropped it to find out, but I've heard good things about a thin case + tempered glass screen protector if you don't want a super big protectivr case on it.
So sorry for you, all my friends have cracked displays, thank god i don't..
It's also so random, a friend dropped his phone (LG O2X) from about 30 cm's and it broke..
I threw my phone (LG O2X) against a wall multiple times, and i smacked in on the floor a few times, and it did not break...
Ya. I knew my luck was really bad
note 2 doesn't have GG2 anyways. i feel for you tho', broke my one x some time ago in the same way..

That's hard luck. My Note 2 has fallen from waist height face down onto bathroom tile but survived with no scratches and cracks, but a very very minute chip to the bottom left of the phone. Maybe I got REALLY lucky.
I think beyond a certain height, the phone cannot take a fall. Also, I refrain from using the flip cover because it makes one handed usage very hard ( and the causes of such falls to be honest ).

Silicon covers offer far better protection than flip covers, I've dropped mine several times now and don't have dents or scratches! Just 2 sharp dents on my screen protector:good:
Breaking news! Another person dropped a glass touchscreen phone on the CONCRETE and the GLASS cracked! ! ! Who would have thought.
It's called gorilla GLASS, not gorilla DIAMOND! ! ! !
Ok, on serious note... Sorry for your loss. My thoughts are with you and your family during this difficult time.
I've cracked my screen to.... local Samsung service center told me that they can replace only glass if touchscreen is working and only for 120$ instead of 250$ for whole touchscreen

Thats what I use for Note2 protection..silicon cases offers best protection compared to flip covers..flip cover only protects display but screen guard is good alternative.it doesn't protects the border anyways.
Silicon covers protects the phone from every kind of damage..here's pic of my silicon cover
