Gingerbread released for Nexus One - G2 and Desire Z General

Hey guys! Don't know how many of you were watching, but the nexus one got its gingerbread update! Why does this matter? Well, the nexus one would have to be the first phone to receive the update and now that it has the floodgates are open! This is particularly good news for us g2 oowners, as we are running stock android and are one of the next in line for the update. Wooo!
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

We already have a very stable version running on our phones so realistically its not that great news, its good but nothing to be shouting about haha sooorrry.

Indeed, but for those without stock this is good news and those with it can expect performance increases in custom ROMs when it comes out from the drivers it will provide. Kinda win win.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA App

I really wish it was that simple but its not the case. Just because it "looks" like stock doesn't mean that there's tons of different from AOSP. Plus, the nexii phones don't need their updates to be carrier approved unlike the G2. IMO we won't get official gingerbread until mid-summer. Totally sucks but realistically it's what we'll have to put up with. I'd love an updated .35/.37 kernel from HTC though. CM7 is so amazing though that I wouldn't even worry about it.

But dude, we're a small group of super nerds. Even the guys struggling to root their phones and understand the concept of flashing ROMs are still far nerdier than most people.
Ahhh.. but the nerd life is a good life. So fricken' glad the Android platform has such a great community of super nerds.

Lol... true but we can't assume that everyone can root their device and know how to root their phone. So it will be good news for those who want the gingerbread update for the g2 but as for me I don't really care since I can use cyan7 running gingerbread already...

Apparently samsung has "confirmed" Gingerbread for the galaxy s phones in march. (Check the galaxy s I9000 forums) By that logic, we should be getting it before then, unless tmobile botches their "pure android" marketing component for the G2.

put it this way... the G1 runs 2.2, we walk on the moon, we give millions of dollars to Justin Bieber, Obama got elected (had to)
Anything is possible.
Leaked specs show it to be just another Galaxy S phone but with Gingrbread. Also, since it has support for T-Mobile's AWS bands, the modem should probably work, too. It's basically the Vibrant but with a front-facing camera (which we can mod in anyways). I'll be shocked if there isn't a port within days of the Nexus S being released. And hell, Samsung and T-Mo should make the damn firmware downloadable to us! (OK, that last part will never happen...well, not officially

I mean, this is the exact same phone we have but with the front-facing camera installed.
So can we get the rear camera to work with no banding with some firmware from this being ported over? I think that's the best thing of porting over some stuff from this phone.

Not directly @donut, but...
The point of it being a NEXUS is that it is the most open phone. The nexus is the android development phone. It is pure android with all support coming straight from google! Everyone should hope this is not just a rumour. This would hopefully get us 2.3 & more on the fast track.
Of course there are specifics that may not translate but here's to hoping : cheers:!

Well said. The phone is real. All we need is to confirm the hardware is exactly the same (except the camera part). If the hardware is the same, that makes things easier. As the ROM chefs/devs here have shown, porting is doable among Galaxy S phones with the hardware being so similar.

I'd love to have it, with the recent reports showing the horsepower that it have coupled with Sense 3.0 that would be the perfect phone to have
If people want the HTC Sense experience then they should look at a HTC Phone. Although a Port is possible, its very time consuming and by the time someone actually port's it over with all the drivers working, your device will be close to the yearly refresh and you will want the next best thing. This will leave the developer in a limbo where his efforts didnt truly pay off.

It's not possible, Galaxy S is half baked, Nexus S also try, half baked. Samsung uses totally different structure on android Nexus S can't even port TouchWiz and its the same manufacturer. I would love to get S II spec wise it blows the Sensation out.

Id say its all about taste. Personally I think motorola's UI is the worst, followed closely by the apple wannabe touchwiz. Funny, I actually hated sense as well at first, but now that im using it for a while, I LOVE IT.
Also, its because htc has added soooo much functionality, like finding/wiping/ringing from anywhere(laptop) incase its lost, or stolen, etc. Plus auto-backup of messages, apprx 100 very useful widgets, plus may apps wich save you a lot of time if you had to download one by one. Basically, its a complete package that looks good and offers functionality that no other manufacturer can even come close to, especially being built in from start. no headaches. I myself wish it could be ported but I doubt, especially with how "involved" its gotten lately

I had a Galaxy S, then Atrix and now Inspire. Next I'm buying Galaxy S II because the bootlogger is unlocked and I want the light weight, dual core processor power and video enhancements.
The Inspire is amazing. I like it far better than the Atrix because I can put custom roms on it. I was able to root the Atrix and do a few modifications but it was very limited. I strongly recommend the Inspire.
The Sensation is locked down as is the Atrix. If you want a good out of the box phone Atrix is as good as you get until the Galaxy S II arrives. Sensation will be great but probably about the same as the Galaxy S II.
It is hard to recommend a phone without knowing what you do with your phone. For me the unlocked boot logger is the difference between buying and not buying.
Personally I prefer Sense.I think that Samsung have basically copied the iPhone in design and UI. If someone could remove the native Samsung bloat and add sense, all would be good in the world(for me at least)

Sent from my RafDroidHD using Tapatalk
I think we can. If enough people that have bought a SGS2 ask for sense then I am sure someone(developer) will be willing to design it for SGS2. From what I have seen of custom roms so far, I think that there are some more than capable developers out there that could do it. If I could write code I definitely would(perhaps I should start learning. The only question is can an old dog(me) learn new tricks?????)

Still no signs of Android 2.3 for our beloved "Vibrant"?

Oh come on Samsung, its big time we get to taste the Android Gingerbread OS for our Galaxy S Vibrant. I have a Galaxy S I9000 and I got Gingerbread update in the month of Apr-May. But Samsung has not even released Android 2.2.1 for Vibrant. Did they forget this model?
Edit: No doubt I love the amazing Cyanogenmod 7 on my Vibrant but I'd love to see the 2.3 update from Samsung (some TouchWiz love LOL).

Don't hold your breath on that one. I think the Vibrant is dead, at least in samsung's eyes. There have been multiple leaks for Galaxy S4G, another today for the Epic and i believe the others have also seen leaks, and and still nothing for the Vibrant.

T-Mobile doesn't want to cut into upgrades. Since the Vibrant 4G is out and is the current model, the original Vibrant is deprecated. It is pretty obvious, as no other carrier has been denied a Gingerbread version for the Galaxy S except for T-Mobile.

The 4G isn't much of an upgrade for current Vibrant owners imo. I don't see why we couldn't get the software it's not like it would give us a FFC or 4g(maybe). I guess for those of us smart enough to root and flash that we survive with better roms anyway. We probably should have seen this coming. I mean the only way possible to get froyo was to update via kies which hopefully won't brick your phone.

Amen Bro ! Thats why I love this site so much. It doesn't really matter what T-Mobile does so its kind of a pointless conversation. I would't really even take the KIES update or OTA update from T-Mobile anyways. I will wait untill someone here gets a good stable JB Release. I am reluctant to change because my ICS rom is so smooth and stable but I know within a few months it will be worth it. It's like a slap in the face to the slow and bloated T-Mo. Rom.

I wouldn't do a kies update either. My hope is for Samsung to release source so that the devs here have more to work with. That was what dogged the vibrant. They eventually released Froyo for it, but nothing further. The GB/ICS/JB releases for it were all ported from either the i9000 or the Nexus S, and had to be tweaked since there was no actual source to work with for the vibrant itself. That's why the GPS was so spotty on it on any version of android after Froyo. I'm glad that my insurance replacement for my busted Vibrant was the Hercules, which is still in the window of time (was it 18 months?) that they pledged to support upgrades to android. Whether we actually see it is another story. At least the devs here really kick some butt on the ROMs they release.
