Emailed Samsung about audio out on the docks... - Epic 4G General

NOTE: Vivified linked us to these versions of the Samsung Desk Home and Samsung Car Home apps.
The audio out has been verified to work on both docks using EB13 and no other modifications.

Despite the above, we need to have the official Samsung solution for this issue, so here is the original post I put up...
Here is the support request email I sent through Samsung's website:
I purchased the Epic 4G from Sprint the day it came out, and with it I bought the media dock. I knew full well that at the time the dock's audio-out did not function, but was willing to wait until Android 2.2 was released to gain that functionality. I purchased the Car Dock shortly after that came out as well, again knowing I would not be able to use the audio-out until Android 2.2. After more waiting around for Android 2.2 than anybody could have ever guessed, it finally drops and I excitedly installed it only to find out that neither audio-out on the Media Dock nor the Car Dock is yet functional. I am very upset with my experience overall with the Epic at this point. The phone itself is fine, but through all the empty promises and broken deadlines I'm fed up with Samsung's customer service. I understand that at least part of the hold-up for releasing FroYo on the Epic was because of Sprint, but I expected Samsung to have held up their end of the bargain and deliver the features we were promised. All I want to know is when will we get an update that will make the audio-outputs on the docks function? I'm already at the end of my rope with Samsung phones, as I owned a Moment before my Epic, and the support from Samsung for that device was abysmal. At this point it is highly unlikely I will buy another Samsung phone, and will be looking to trade in for another brand as soon as my new upgrade is available.

And here is the relatively quick, and somewhat interesting response:
Dear Colin,
Thank you for your inquiry.
We do apologize for the inconvenience that you encounter with your phone,
We recommend to download and install Samsung Desk Home application from the Android Market to fix this issue.
We thank you for your continued interest in Samsung products.
Sincerely,

I of course immediately wrote back informing them that we are no longer able to download the Desk/Car Home apps from the Market as they disappeared months ago, and to advise on further action to take... We shall see.

Keep us updated on this if you don't mind.
I've been looking into getting a car dock but if it doesn't work then I'm not even going to bother. Glad I waited before I bought it.

The desk home app is still in the market. I just found it today, however it didn't change anything on the audio when I was on the dock as far as I can tell.

This problem was evident on the Captivate as well, but the problem has been resolved with the latest and greatest leaked official 2.2 that is releasing tomorrow from ATT/Samsung.
The unofficial/official KB1 update comes with the needed Car Home apps installed. You can find the apks in the link below as Froyo_CradleMain_ver1.apk and Froyo_CarCradleMain_ver1.apk. I am unsure if they will work for the Epic, but hope it helps.

Np, hope it helps. Just happened upon this thread by accidentally clicking "New Posts" and thought I should share what was found over on the Captivate forums.

I wrote them a very similar email, and the response I got was to contact the manufacturer!
"Thank you for your inquiry. Please contact the manufacturer of the Car Dock that you are referring to and check on the compatibility as well as the proper connection necessary. If your device is an Authentic Samsung Product, we invite you to contact Samsung Customer Care at your earliest convenience through our toll free number 1-888-987-HELP (1-888-987-4357) for further troubleshooting.
Thank you for your continued interest in Samsung products.

Useless bastards.

Wait....
So you purchased a device with a feature that wasn't operable...knowingly. As well as an accessory that was compatible...knowingly...under the assumption that this functionality "might" come?! What literature was provided to the public ensuring these features would arrive??
You people put way to much faith in these manufactures. This sounds like your fault to me. I would never purchase a product "hoping" it might one day work to my liking...

Possible Solution
Out of curiosity, I Googled the Desk and Car Home apps and found the following files:
com.samsung.tmo.deskhome.test.apk
com.samsung.tmo.carhome.test.apk
If you Google those specific file names you will find the links on Mediafire.com.
Supposedly they were tested and ran well on an Epic 4G. Ironically, I don't have either dock, but I was wondering how hard it would be to find a working version outside of the Market that might help you guys having issues.
I'm curious as to whether or not they do fix the problem.

Working Now
Used the AT&T .apk from post #4...audio out now working with my home dock. I don't have a car dock so I cannot verify that one. But the AT&T .apk so graciously provided in post 4 working like a charm. Thank you very much!!!

Cool deal, glad to hear it worked out. If it worked on the home dock, I'm inclined to believe it's resolved on the car dock as well with those apks. This was a big issue with Captivates before the 2.2 Froyo KB1 leaked.

That cradle app from post #4 works but it plays the line out and the phone speaker at the same time which sorts of defeats the purpose.

I know you've been correct many times now, but I feel I might as well respond anyway... There were multiple notices with both products stating that the 2.2 upgrade would bring this functionality. No 'might', 'probably', 'maybe', or any other uncertainty. It was a stated fact.
I will try the .apk's posted here. My media dock is at home, but I'll run out to the car and try the car dock.

Sure enough the car dock app worked! Why the hell can't Samsung figure this crap out? If it was as simple as giving us this, why was it not included with EB13?!?!

Does your phone speaker go mute? I used the cradle app from post #4.
The line out works but the phone speaker doesn't mute itself.

Sprint refurb full of previous owners info!

I feel like I need to get this off my chest, so my apologies of this isn't in line with the technical nature of this board.
I RMA'd my Hero a few days ago due to a blown ear speaker (sounded like a bee trapped in there whenever anyone talked), and was sent a refurb Hero that had a broken trackball button. The csr assured me the Hero had no trackball or center button (!!!) and after arguing with him that it did, he finally sent me over to Advanced Data Support or whatever they call it, where they agreed to send me out another Hero. That one arrived today, and refused to accept programming. After 45 minutes with support they finally got it to work by having me manually program it. The previous owners phone number, Sprint email (which is their full name), and city were all in there already, as it was obviously never properly reset at the factory. When they had me make a test call, voicemail, it dialed the old owner's phone number, and I actually spoke to them! When I explained it to him, he said "ohh...uh oh..." like he was pitying me for having his old phone. Out of curiosity, I googled the name, which revealed their myspace and facebook pages. I find this breach of privacy disgusting. Why is Sprint leaving so much personal data on their refurbished phones?
And I'd bet good money the other refurb I was sent, was originally sent in because of that damn broken trackball button, which they ignored and sent right back out as refurbished.
Maybe I'm overreacting, but right now I'm really disgusted with Sprint. Disgusted enough that the EVO looks a lot less enticing than it did a few days ago. :/
Thanks for reading.
-TM
Well, that's not very reassuring. If you don't already have one, I'd consider getting an account over at Sprint Users and putting it there as well. I'd not be happy having my phone go out full of my information!
Wow, this is really funny. I would definetly post at Sprint Users or Sprint Community Forums. Wonder if it is possible to wipe that data our selves before sending it back in. Seems like it would be difficult since Hands Free Activation pretty much populates all that info on the phone for you the first time you boot it up.
i hate the fact sprint takes these broken phones, fixes them and passes them off as new. the hero isn't even a year old and their doing this.
I had to get a refurb just this past Monday and before I took in my old phone I made sure to delete EVERYTHING. Although I really don't think it would hurt me too much for someone to be able to steal my identity.
This isnt something you would normally see. I had to edit what I was about to post. But phones are tested and remanufactured with new parts before being sent out. I would recomend if there is one close to you using a service and repair center for replacement rather than having them send one over the phone.... and you get the added bonus of not having to deal with the RMA kit

At no point ever, is an Advanced Exchange ever talked about as a "new" device. Every piece of literature anywhere says its a refurbished phone.. And a tech that tells you different is a liar..
Here you are again spreading lies to get a skewed point across..
I'm ashamed of myself for posting this because I'm so against it but this sounds like a case for bricking before submitting for a replacement.

Yeah, that's pretty much unacceptable. And it's not the first time it's happened, I've read about this before. I would call the news. Seriously. It's newsworthy. Maybe if Sprint feels a little heat on this issue, they'll be a bit more careful with their customer's privacy.
why would you brick a perfectly good phone because there is someone else's info in it? that's ridiculous. you can do into settings and factory reset yourself and you're good to go. no sense in killing a perfectly good phone for no reason....

I think he meant if he had to return his phone he would brick it. You know, so Sprint doesn't just pass it off to the next person as a "refurb" with all his info still in it.

I've read before that user data is stored in the mtd5 file or in mtd5ro. And i dont believe wiping clears out /dev/mtd/mtd5 and mtd5ro. But as nebenezer said you can always brick your phone, or possibly try
Code:
adb shell
rm -r /*
to delete everything. If you really wanted to.... or just delete the mtd5 files, if they actually are where userdata is stored.
So here is the thing.
When the phone is booted up - It polls the tower and says "HEY I'm MEID XXXXXXXXXXXX" - Then The phone says "HEY I DON'T HAVE ANY DATA WHAT THE HELL DO I CONNECT TO" and the Tower answers back "HERE IS ALL YOUR STUPID DATA NOW STFU" this is all of the login info and other stuff associated with the phones owner. The phone can now poll the tower for SMS, Calls, blah, blah, blah. THIS IS CALLED HANDS FREE ACTIVATION
Given overly simplfied.
Even after a phone has been completely reset out of the box brand spanking new. If the MEID is tied to a customer the phone populates automagically with that information. Thank you Sprint for this wonderful invention (which I think Verizon actually started)
So there really is no way to get all of your data off the phone since the phone will attempt to poll the data from the network once it is booted again. You need to make sure that the MEID is completly disassociated from your account to prevent it. Something Sprint has obviously failed at here.
Questions? None? Ok Good.
Kcarpenter, thanks for the explanation. The first phone I had did exactly that, immediately after booting it provisioned itself. The second phone however, did not. It just booted right up the home screen, where the HTC time/weather widget was already populated with the last known location. It appears the phone was never even turned on by Sprint after it was sent in to them. That raises even more disturbing questions regarding their refurbishing process. :/

The Process is very broken. I have heard this happen more than once.
In fact a story about me:
I bought a used phone from US Cellular, it was one of their "30 Day phones" that was only used for 30 Days by someone who didn't like it. I purchased the phone they set it up gave it to me. I got home and started playing with it and sure enough there where pictures on it of people I didn't know. I thought they may have been demo pictures, but I'll de damned if one of them was a naked black chick and another pic of a naked black dude. (not racial just not my thing). I was furious. I took the phone back and told them what had happened. They said it was impossible that had happened and the pictures where mine (Skiny pasty white guy) I had a few issues with this phones a few days later. Randomly dropping calls/signal/error messages. So I took it in to have it looked at. The water damage sensor had been lit up. No way this was my fault - the phone never left my desk at home because the damn thing didn't work worth a ****. They said this had to be my fault because they check this stuff before they sell the phone again. So I was out 200 bucks for a broken phone with pictures of ugly ass naked people on it.
Lesson Learned:
Drop US Cellular if you have them. If you ever by a used cell phone Check it thorughly for kiddie porn and water damage.

That most people who work for cell phone companies are incompetent when it comes to cell phone knowledge? It is quite amusing to ask them questions or call into the tech support line for help. I would guess 97.4% of them are clueless about what they are talking about

Exactly. At some point I just stopped talking to them at all, it's completely pointless. Same with computer shop staff and car dealers. An evening with google is way more productive before a decision on something important/expensive.
Yeah before I got my note I was ringing up every phone shop asking them if they knew when the Galaxy Note would be in stock.
I would then receive the reply "Don't you mean the Galaxy Nexus?"
No I mean the Galaxy Note.
"Hmm I don't think we do that phone I'm afraid."
Yes you do.
"Okay, well let me check the system.....*after a while* Oh yes we do sell that phone but we have no release date yet I'm afraid."
Then when I did buy my phone the guy instore was amazed with the phone..never heard of it and couldn't believe the size of the screen...Why do they work in these places!?

Not that I don't agree but its interesting to know how did you come up with that %number.
When the Note was released, I wanted to see it before purchasing it to get some idea on the size. In the UK we have the CPW (carphonewarehouse), anyway I made the mistake of visiting their local store...
Me: Hi mate, do you have the Galaxy Note in stock?
Him: The what?
Me: The Galaxy Note.
Him: Whats that?
Me: A phone.
Him: We don't sell that phone.
Me: Are you sure? Will any other CPW have it in stock?
Him: Are you sure it's called the Galaxy Note?
Me: 100%
Him: One sec I will check our system. *checks* Nope we do not offer that phone at all at any of our branches in the UK.
Me: Even though it is on your website?
Him: Erm...
Me: BYE.
Absolutely utter tools some of them.

Finally I have somebody who speaks my mind!
It may be worse here in the USA but I have listened in when my wife has called and they really are complete morons sometimes. Just today I went into an att store and the sales person swore up and down my note would not work on their network, and they had no idea what the damn thing was. Oh and I had to inform the person it was coming to att soon which they were shocked.
They amaze me sometimes

During the time i lived in the US, i worked for T-Mobile in customer care. Due to my experience with Windows Mobile devices i had much more knowledge than anyone in the technical care team. But get this, on winmo devices you could only have 1 hotmail email synced on the device and in our system which held info on the touch pro 2 and the hd2 there was listed a "known issue" of only being able to have one hotmail account on the device. The listed remedy? A matter reset! No one at tmo, who write this stuff had even worked out you could sign out and sign back in with another account. Total chimps the lot of them.

Not to sound like a douche but come on guys.
Most of the people working at places like CPW, Bestbuy or whatever are there simply to sell stuff that they have. Those stores have hundreds if not thousands of different products and it is literally impossible for any salesperson in those places to know every single product they sell inside out or even all the product names.
Even companies like AT&T that sell mostly phones and broadband stuff have tens/hundreds of items. Being a tool at the salespeople in these places is just that, being a tool.
And just in case some of you didn't know this yet, for a salesperson the most important thing is to know the few best products and how to promote them best. Even though I love my Note, I'm quite sure it isn't the leading pulling factor for electronic & phone stores.
However I do agree that in after sale -services such as helpedesk or troubleshooting they should have people who actually know what they are talking about.
In Ukraine every single clerk knew about SGN, its delivery dates and other tech specs
Perhaps it is because of huge advertising campaign by Samsung about this phone.
Why restrict it to phone company employees?
When the SG2 was released in the USA, I went to take a look at one, just to see if it looked small compared to my Dell Streak (I have the note now). Walked into Best Buy...had no clue. Went to an at&t store, they had one on display (functioning). Sales drone came up to me and asked if I was looking to buy that phone, told her no, I had a 5" screen, whipped out my streak. She said "oh, that runs android doesn't it?" Yes it does. "well, I only try to sell iPhones because they are better than android". I just laughed and walked out the door.
Hey, if you like your locked down tiny screen, you really can't do what you want to YOUR phone because Apple says so...be my guest. Not me.
Thanks for this thread
For a long time I thought that this is only in germany the case the nobody knows what he/she is telling about stuff what they are selling
It is really terrible, because in most cases you are paying for it, for the good advice
I am happy now, I now know that this is a global problem, so still use google and then buy in www is for me still the best way

Thank you. I have to wonder how many of the people in this thread have actually worked retail. It's a crap job, it doesn't pay much, and in most places there isn't much time to really learn deeply about the products you're selling. They're probably not geeks, because if they were they'd probably working somewhere else most of the time. I'm not expecting someone who gets a low hourly wage to invest their off time in learning the products they sell, and most of them probably don't make enough money to buy a lot of the stuff. Even if they wanted to, your typical cell phone store is selling hundreds or thousands of phones or accessories, and the stock is always changing.
Look people, it's a job, hardly anyone does it for fun. They have a basic level of knowledge because 95% of their customers have even less knowledge, so they do fine. These people put in their hours and get a paycheck, because they have bills to pay, mouths to feed, just like you or me. Treat them with a little respect, okay? They're people!
If you want to blame someone, blame the company that doesn't provide enough training, because it costs too much, then blame yourself for not being willing to pay significantly more for your toys in order to fund the training the employees need to meet your standards.
Blame the company. 3rd party sales do not train for crap. This is from personal experince. Sales numbers are all that matters. Hell I've worked retail whwre my manager disnt know how to uninstall a program from android. I also worked for tier 2 tech support for Sprint (3rd party), I found it sad we were hiring tech support people that didnt even know how to unistall a pc program (seriously 2 people they hired didnt even know what control panel was!)
What seems to happen is these companies get 1 or 2 tech savvy people amd lay it all on them

Non-corporate stores: helpful

Yep.
Oftentimes we see advice to "go to a corporate store" or only deal with them for serious matters, but in fact, non-corporate stores can be a big help. Here in my area, the local corpstore got sold, and bought by a 'premium reseller'. With that, I found out yesterday, came a repair center. Awesome - I needed one. My headphone jack had become quite useless.
I went in, and within 20 minutes, one of the employees had replaced my headphone jack. No damage, no defects - 100% perfect. And much quicker than I expected. Thanks to TEP, I walked out without paying one red cent.
Why post this? Primarily to counterbalance the feedback on noncorp stores and Sprint repair centers that has come about here. Another user had his Epic all but destroyed by a sloppy solder job - quite unfortunate. But it's worth recognizing that such cases are a minority.
Fun fact: the employee who worked on my device built his Epic from a bunch of spare parts. Cool.
Andrew at the Auburn AL location: if you're reading this, thanks again. Got anything custom on your device? And did you notice I actually had both of Yelawolf's major releases ready in the music player?
Very cool. Good info to have. Also, I find It interesting you're in Alabama. I am as well.
Edit: Might as well. Roll Ride.

I'm the guy who had his phone destroyed by a faulty solder job.
Despite that, I was forced to go back to the very same store with the replacement epic a week after when it's screen crapped out. I ended up getting a good chuckle with the repair tech (different guy) as he put the guts from my new phone into the case of my old phone I since it was still in their inventory. Now I have a frankenphone of my own lol.
Overall it was a good experience at the end of the day.

AMERICANS! Lol..I'm in Georgia, and I suffer the Epic as well..well, did suffer it, on my fourth one now (first two I thought had faulty compasses because the SkyMap app would not show anything but UP even when pointing down- did you know when you calibrate your devices' accelerometer in the settings you tap the button and then place the phone SCREEN DOWN on a level surface to get it calibrated? Neither did the guys at the store...or I for that matter, until phone number 3, hmmm).

I've been to 3 corporate stores and 2 non corporate in the last few days. Sadly none of them were able to help me out but all were courteous and helpful. I usually go to the non corporate store down the street when my Sprint phone (various) have needed service and they've done a wonderful job.
Back story on the current problem in case anyone has any advice. A few days ago my epic had a sad accident where the LCD has developed a crack causing it not display anything. ADB tells me the guts are fine and the gorilla glass doesn't have a mark on it. Sprint told me with TEP that screen replacement is free (IF they have a replacement screen around). Short of it no one has a replacement screen in Central Ohio it appears and no one will just order a screen. So it appears I'm stuck with the $100 deductible on the TEP... sucks
Asurion (I believe that is right) sent me a brand new phone with activation instructions and a return mailing envelope for my DOA phone. Just call the folks at customer service and explain to them your problem- no need to go anywhere, they should send it right to you..and you won't be without a phone for the RMA/repairs! I am sprint with TEP too, if that is what you are on they should do the same for you.

I just called Sprint Customer service..I dropped my phone and the screen wouldn't even come on, though touch was still active (could tell by haptic feedback). The Sprint CS will arrange it, not sure if calling Asurion direct would accomplish anything, I never did. As far as I can tell, they handle the warranty for the sprint TEP plans.
I no longer go corporate since the local reseller moved and upgraded its status and can now do almost everything corporates can. It saves me about 110 miles of driving.

[Q] Please Help! Phone Overheated and now unresponsive!!

A week ago, I traded my like new One X for a like new Nexus 4. It seemed flawless when I got it. It was rooted when I got it, and I put Paranoid Android on it when I got home. A couple days later, I decided to try a couple different kernels so I could adjust the RGB and gamma. I installed Franco kernel, and his kernel management software. I adjusted my screen, and also turned on fast USB charging. That night, I woke up in the middle of the night to find the phone extremely hot. It was plugged into a standard wall charger. The touchscreen was also completely unresponsive in the os, but was responsive in the bootloader and in TWRP. I quickly reflashed to the stock kernel and let the phone cool down. It became responsive again after cooling down. I figured it was an overheat protection thing, so then yesterday I tried another kernel on it but did not turn on fast usb charging, figuring that that was the culprit. The phone charged fine during the day yesterday, and all seemed well. Well this morning, I woke up to an unresponsive hot phone with the battery only at 70 something after charging all night. This time, the phone was also unresponsive in TWRP as well. The only thing I was able to do was hard reboot. I cant even power the phone down by selecting power off in the bootloader- it just reboots. I have completely wiped the phone, and reflashed and the issue still persists, My wife is pissed at me cuz she hates it when I get new phones, and now this phone is consuming more of my time and she says I was stupid for trading my perfectly good one x for this phone. I don't know what to do, as this is obviously not a software issue. I'm going to try to give as much info as possible, as I'm really pissed off right now and I want to make sure I give as many details as anyone needs.
(list borrowed from another help post)
* yes my phone is rooted
* no I haven't dropped it ever
* no I haven't exposed it to water or anything else that is abnormal ever
* yes I flashed a custom ROM.... cm10.1 and PA, both from Goo
* yes the MD5 matched
*yes I flashed a custom Kernel (last night) ......... Franco Kernel and
* no I didn't have any issues afterwards, just after it was charging and overheated.
* the phone worked fine with the os until the overheat
* yes I fully wiped prior to flashing
* yes I am completely sure I didn't drop the phone and/or expose it to anything specific
* yes I have a seidio surface case and zagg shields front and back on the phone.
Is my warranty voided now that my bootloader is unlocked? If I return to stock and return it, can they find out and not honor my warranty? My wife will KILL me if they keep my $300 for any reason!!
Its working again now, after sitting unresponsive in TWRP I rebooted it so I could save some files as I planned to unroot. Im sure this will happen again. What should I do? Call Google? And pretend its still having the problem?
I would flash the stock image first and see if the problem persists.
I also don't think Google will be able to help you since you aren't the original owner of the phone.
So the warranty is void when you sell a phone? Because it's back to being unresponsive again.

If i were you, i would return it completely to stock and re-lock the bootloader using one of the toolkits and send it back to Google, sounds like its defective. I don't think Google will screw you around on the warranty just because you weren't the original owner.

It has happened with the factory LG charger, and a Blackberry charger as well. I know that sometimes chargers don't work with another phone, but that's rare from all my years in wireless. And that's all that would happen, is that it wouldn't work.
As of right now, it's working. But that's just right now. I can't rely on this device, and as much as I like it, I'm missing my One X right now. I traded a perfect phone, for THIS. My wife is still angry at me. Every time I get a new phone she complains that I have to spend time doing everything with it. I swore up and down that this Nexus was it for a while. Now THIS.
And of course, it's back to not working again. Any ideas on a cause or if this if fixable in someway on my own? Digitizer replacement or something?? Any recourse if I can't get the info Google wants? And does anyone know how quickly I can expect to see an RMA device if I am successful, or if there is a paid expedited shipping option or something? Ugh sorry to ask so many questions but I'm just so upset over this.

I think the RMA turnover is roughly a week. If you manage to get the email for the warranty, you have to pay the shipping 1 way afaik. Worst case scenario you have to pay to get it fixed Good luck man.
During one of the brief moments the screen worked, I had the foresight to pair my bluetooth mouse to the phone. It allows me to navigate the phone even when the digitizer isn't working, but its extremely stupid to have to do. The kid I traded with still has yet to respond to my numerous texts. I really hope he isn't gonna screw me. I just don't know what to think anymore.
actually you might be able to get warranty service still.
you will need to find out if it was purchased from the play store. if it was, you need the email address it was purchased with. google can then transfer the warranty to you and get you service.
i went through this just yesterday. i bought the phone from someone who bought it from the play store. i called google for an exchange, they asked for this info and then emailed me with a request for serial number, address, name.. etc.
IF you can't get the gmail address of the original buyer - google can process it as a gift which means they don't need the email address but it MUST have been purchased through the play store. otherwise they won't help.
again - i just called google yesterday and this is what they told me.
i know how you feel man. i sold my perfectly good galaxy note 2 for this phone that randomly shuts off. mind you this was back in january and the random shut off thing has just been recently.
anyhow, google will help you as long as you have the info they need. good luck.

If anything, once I get this non-responding, possible scammer/jerk to give me the info, maybe at the least I could pretend it was given to me as a gift. Every hour that goes by, makes me angrier and angrier that I had a PERFECT HTC One X, and I couldn't just be satisifed with that. I just HAD to roll the dice AGAIN. It seemed like a fair trade, unless he knew it had issues. But if that is the case, why would he go through the trouble of trading/scamming someone and having them know his address and phone number when he could have easily gotten Google to replace it himself?
Well Seraldo, so far so good. I called again and didn't mention my first call. I said that the device was a gift and I didn't know the email address. He asked me for the IMEI instead, and it's worth noting that the previous rep did not ask for anything else. He saw an opportunity to close the door on helping me, and took it. The helpful rep also sent this email to summarize our conversation:
Hi David,
Thank you for contacting Google. I do understand how not being able to get your device to respond can be very frustrating. However, I will be more than happy in assisting you with this issue.
As promised over the phone, I have consulted this case up to a specialist. We will look over this case as thoroughly as possible to get this resolved as quickly as possible. Also as promised, I am going to be keeping you updated with ever new information.
If you have any other questions or concerns, please respond directly back to this email.
Best Regards,
James

I will keep you guys posted on how this develops. I do want to ask tho, are we 100% sure that they wont be able to tell my phone was unlocked/rooted/unrooted/relocked? Cause if they suck $300+ out of our account saying the warranty is void, that night you all will be watching the news and there will be a story about a guy in Rhode Island getting castrated by his wife. And no... I'm not joking. On a lighter note, I do have to say that the hold time for calling Google support was almost nonexistent. Very pleased with that =)

Whenever you make a deal on craigslist, you had better count on never seeing/hearing from the other party once the money/items have traded hands. It's common sense.
I also for the life of me cannot figure out why men these days get together with a female only to let them become the boss of everything, and show fear of them.. even in public. From reading this thread top to bottom, it seems as though you're getting angry at things you cannot control.
I'd start with your relationship, then work on the phone.

Agreed. This wasn't my first rodeo, and I'm well aware of what goes down with CL deals. The only reason I even bothered is because the existence of the warranty was discussed by him and I as part of the sale, and also the fact that what I required from him to take advantage of the warranty was merely a two second text message containing his email address. He would literally only have to lift a finger (or two) for a second to enable me to have use of the warranty that the owner of the phone is entitled to. I gave him a perfect device, and had something gone wrong with the One X I would have gladly done the same for him.

Well, Mr. Rockefeller, I'm not sure of your financial situation, but money is pretty tight over here. I have a wife and a child to feed/clothe/house, and losing 300-some-odd dollars on a phone would be devastating to our finances and my wife would be well within her rights to be upset about it. However, the castration comment, and subsequent 'deadpan' statement about me not being kidding, was in fact, a joke. I'm sorry you couldn't see through to that.

Angry at the guy for not sending me a two second text? Yes. About the rest of the situation? No. More sad and disappointed. I was really venting my frustration on the entire situation, and reaching out for productive suggestions for the matter at hand, which you have provided none of. I have also read this thread top to bottom, and I fail to see where you showed me your PhD and I requested relationship/life advice from you. Maybe I missed something? Kindly troll another thread, and maybe come back if/when you have something useful to offer =)

Nvidia recalls Shield Tablet due to possible overheating

NVIDIA has announced a recall of its SHIELD tablets, sold between July 2014 and July 2015:
Information on how to obtain a replacement device: http://www.nvidia.com/support/tabletrecall
Official nVidia notice: http://nvidianews.nvidia.com/news/notice-for-nvidia-tablet-customers
This should be stickied - this is big news.
Actual Nvidia statement here:
http://www.marketwired.com/press-release/notice-for-nvidia-tablet-customers-nasdaq-nvda-2043927.htm
Coincidentally I'm just awaiting a replacement. My defective unit (not for overheating) reached them yesterday. Hoping they send me out an unaffected replacement by close of play today, though may be subject to delay now I guess.
Yeah new tablet for all \o/
also, double check this: http://tabletrecall.expertproductinquiry.com/registration/registration

The battery type check was added in the latest OTA along with a recall app that is opened if you have the right battery type. You will probably have to flash the new stock build to check.

Have a look at the faq: http://tabletrecall.expertproductinquiry.com/faq/6x1gnn
Q. How do I know if my tablet is affected?
A. The recall includes NVIDIA SHIELD tablets (both WIFI and LTE) sold between July 2014 and July 2015.
Model numbers P1761, P1761W and P1761WX and serial numbers 0410215901781 through 0425214604018 are included in this recall. The model and serial numbers are etched on the left side edge of the tablets and printed on the packaging.
Please go to www.nvidia.com/support/tabletrecall and follow the instructions. You will need to update your tablet with the latest software to determine if your tablet is affected.

Having literally gone through the RMA process myself for an unrelated issue, I'm assuming you complete that online form and they will send a replacement. You have to agree to a statement that your old affected device will be remotely wiped on receipt of your new one. I'm assuming they'll include a prepaid label for you to return it (goes to an address in the Netherlands).
Usual RMA process is you send the defective unit back and upon receipt they will send out the replacement. Has it been made clear what the process is for this recall? It looks to me, given that statement you consent to, they will forward a replacement right away. If so, that is pretty trusting.
I knew unrooting was not a problem, prolly a factory reset suffice but I'm not sure. The problem is the unlocked bootloader. That can't be undone afaik. In any case there is no word about the roms/root/bootloader type we flashed in the meanwhile on the nvidia official faq pages. This an hadrware defect and looks quite serious to them if they ask for a worldwide return, so I'm not even sure we need to worry about whatever software we flashed in

Thanks Cris_c81. Ive to come home and use the reclamation process from the shield tablet.
And Im glad that Nvidia makes it smooth for us consumer to get a safe product now when the current one is proclaimed unsafe to use.
Also, is it ok to make a RMA and then unroot the tablet while I wait for a replacement?
Just did the whole process.
Yes you could call and check your serial number without restoring back to stock, however the RMA process has you using the app( built into the latest OTA) to retrieve RMA code to complete the online process. You do agree to the remote wipe once your replacement is turned on. It also says it will render the tablet in usable. (They likely has a kill switch in the latest OTA also). Just got the confirmation email and it looks to be here in 2-4 weeks. No where during the online process does it say of they want the old device back, however in the email it seems to imply they do. Only way to know for sure is if there is a return postage in the RMA box.

I did the whole process as well for Romania and for some reason i have not received any emails yet -_-
Also i see that they want to return the tablet and i have no problem with that as long as they send any UPS/DHL/DPD courier to my door to pick it up and they pay for the transport since it's their stupid fault.

See this is what I don't know. Because the standard RMA process they ask the customer to foot the cost of paying for FedEx or similar. Unless of course you complain to support and then they send you a prepaid FedEx label, which is what I did

Consider the ginormous screw-up that they did with the battery and reading the process on the page it would seem that they will send you a new tablet and when you open it, the other one will be rendered unusable which basically makes it a giant ball of turd or a brick
Not sure if they want it shipped back or not but by what i'm reading they won't. Even so i don't mind keeping the blank one for spare pieces.
