Springs for G2 keyboard - G2 and Desire Z General

Hey guys I'm wondering if anybody that has replaced the keyboard springs in their G2 has a recommendation on where to get good replacement springs and what the exact specifications are.

I stretched mine, but if you find the loose hinge fixed thread there are several people that said home depot has a spring assortment kit that has one that fits. I would go check that threat out.

How long has it been since you stretched it? I'm just wondering if I'll end up having to do it again in a month. Thanks

Just did it today so I am not sure how long it will last. I will get a replacement spring if it goes bad again. Honestly, taking the phone apart was way easy so you could stretch it to start and then go from there. That is what I am going to do.

Makes sense, how's it feel now? Like new?

someone used a Bic mechanical Pencil spring on a youtube video.

I used a mechanial pencil spring on my henge , it did real good for the first week shortly after that it got loose again. I'm opting for the sprring assortment kit at home depot.

This is what I used. Shipping was $11 but whatever, it was worth it. My hinge is so perfect it's not even funny.

Hey Gambit07
It feels great, better than new. My hinge never felt this good. Although in reading other posts it seems that this is truly a temporay fix. Sound like getting a new spring is the ticket. But I am going to leave well enough alone until I start having issues again, then I will get a new spring and tear it all apart again.

the website that the fix says to buy the springs on wont deliver to ireland, anyone know where else these springs can be purchased?

[Q] Why some hinges are tighter than others?

Some users found that their replacement G2 has hinges tighter than their previous ones, so what causes hinges to become tight or loose?
AFAIK the current troubled ones are not loaded with magnets nor springs, I really wonder if the hinge is tunable/fixable without replacing parts if we want to fix it
A dude cracked open his G2 before but the focus was on the NAND, not much care was put on the hinge part.
No idea, mine was great from the get go. And I preordered and everything.

When I ordered my G2, I ordered 3 all together for others on the same family plan, and mines is just a tad looser than 1 and the other one is the same... I'm thinking its a quality check problem in the factory

See, I don't think you should have to go through 4 phones to get one you like. At that point, it's most probable that you will continue to be dissatisfied and should pick a different phone.

My guess would be because when the phone first came out. Hinges were loose. Htc might have not known that. Then customers started complaining about it and htc addressed the issue by making better hinges. Again these arte just my opinion. My first g2 had the bad hinge problem but I didn't care. I replaced it less than 2 weeks layer and this hinge is perfect. So I'm guessing they have an early bad batch. But made a better quality batch. Jes my opinion

For a large manufacturer like HTC, they should have the G2 went through a series of tough stress tests before it is on sale
But this time the consumers might not get used to their intended design
some fearful ones(they don 't have one nor tested one yet) keep yelling that one day the loose hinge will leave a huge gap and let foreign objects to break the cable(as a current owner, I doubt if this will happen that easily)
It is a real shame if people got scared off this great device just by hearing that without testing it on their own
In fact we need a comparison between the hinges of the tight and loose ones, to see if they use different parts or is due to faulty components, could ifixit help?

I bought one today. really loose. totally loose. except that, the phone is solid, sturdy.
this looseness is difficult to accept.
if all phones are loose, maybe i could give up. but some people can get tight one...
That's what makes it even worse.. knowing someone else prob has a G2 with a really solid, tight hinge.
Mine started as tight as a double fisted gilf from the ho show, and now its more like throwing a hot dog down a hallway. My hinge, that is. Its getting looser.

Got My 2nd G2 Today Without Hinge Issue

Came home today to find that I had received my G2 from the promotion they had last week and turns out this one has a different hinge than my first one.
No biggie, I never thought the first one had that big of an issue but nevertheless I made a video showing the 2 side by side.

Well, anit this about a b......

holy sht...I wonder if i can get a replacement if im still under warranty hahah
So you do reckon they have actually resolved the issue now or have you just got one that is tighter than ur 1st one?
Looks like a change in materials!
I still don't see the fuss about the hinge though.
What fusses me more is that I've gone through 3 G2s and each of them had a pixel problem, be it stuck or dead. Had to use a microscopic-ish lens to find them. Lawl.
I am so jealous right now.

Don't be. People have mentioned that even over time, the hinge will get loose again (this is inevitable, all springs give way over time). So be content with what you have if you have a bug-free phone!

Was it a new upgrade or a replacement, when did you get the first one?
First of all, you may want to get yourself a nice camera that can do HD video recording.
Secondly, your second G2 with the tight hinges is exactly how my G2 was when I first got it. It was super tight, no give, and then after a week of use it become really loose but not quite as loose as your first one. Give it time, and I'm pretty confident that your new G2 will call the loose hinge flu. Let's hope not, though.
My G2 has an intermittent touch screen issue. T-Mobile says it's a known issue. This is unacceptable for me. Aný recommendations? Different model, brand ect. Thanks

Are you sure it's not this issue: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910624? This is a problem inherent with capacitive touchscreens (though some phones may be more susceptible than others depending on design and tolerances).
If not, you might want to try starting a new thread about it instead of trying to get help through one about the hinge (especially if it really is a known issue, others may be able to provide solutions).

No it doesn't, you just don't understand the nuances of capacitive touch sensors. YOU NEED TO COMPLETE THE CIRCUIT by having solid contact with the metal ring around the outside of the screen.
I've been playing with couple different dummy units at the stores
Like best buy and radio shack. They got no hinge problem at all. But really my wife got a g2 that has the problem but she doesn't say anything at all. me neither. I don't see why the problem would make me go have a replacement though. Unless theres something else. But so far so good

I actually just feel like it's a tighter hinge. If it goes loose or not, I don't know. But according to everyone here , it will loosen with time.

Why do you say that it looks like diffenret materials?

You know what, after playing around with it. It just made me realize how beat up my phone is compared to the one -_- Please disregard haha.
Reuploaded since I should have reviewed the video before uploading.
It's been 3 months of use and the hinge is as tight as it was on the first day. So I don't believe that it will become loss at least not during my duration of owning it.

Should I send HTC my phone to fix the "loose hinge" issue

I know that there is a fix that one can do here shown in the forums. However, I do not want to dissect the phone. My phone is not rooted but I am not sure if I feel confident to send it to HTC because I'm not sure what is considered a "loose fix" to them so they might just send it back to me without any fix and I would have to pay for the charge.
I call HTC about it and they said they would check the problem out because I am still under warranty. Has anyone else sent their phones to HTC to fix the loose hinge issue?
it shouldnt really matter if the phone is rooted..... would it? I can't imagine that HTC would void the devices build warranty for software.

Like what 3rd party? Since you didn't get it from t-mobile, t-mobile will say they won't reaplace and ask you to ask the place where you bought it from to fix it.

What's the point in getting it replaced with another G2 that has the same hinge problem? They're all like that.
Newer models weren't fixed? Thats too bad. Anyways, I got it cheap on ebay. Of course, I can not send it back for a replacement. I hinge isn't as loose as I have seen others on youtube. Its just lying down on the bed is an issue for me. I called HTC and said its still under warranty and can possibly fix this if it is an "issue" to them.

hmmm. what I am confused about now is what the warranty covers? I can understand the warranty being voided if rooted. However, for accidental physical damages/ liquid(water) damage, what can you do with the warranty? I thought this would apply to phone defects. Tmobile even said that the early models of the G2 were defective. Its just weird that HTC won't fix it for you even if the issue is known from a larger perspective.
Send it to someone on this forum willing to do the spring replacement for you.

Desire Z replacement springs

Hi, So Im looking for somewhere that sells springs for the desire z because my hinge is starting to get worn a little bit.
Anyone know where i can get some that ship to Ireland or is there another product I can take them from?
I cant find them anywhere.
Thanks
I have looked for these as well with no luck. I have seen a howto fix that stetched the current springs to fix. But this would have to make them weaker in just doing that.
If have one out and measured might be able to order something like grainger industrial.

Glad you got the spring Bombadier.
For instructions, the movie is pretty good. I freeze framed it a couple of times but it worked out good.
One advice is to not apply too much pressure when prying the back open. I mean you do, but control it so that you do not "go through" with the tool. I read about somebody that broke through the volume switches.
Also, when you get to the spring, do not take it apart more than you need, I did inadvertently, and then I had to figure out how those hinges are put together...
The spring, as I said is twice long as needed (and then a little bit) so make sure you cut it nicely. Please read my original post. Good luck.

do you guys think it would be worthwhile to make a spacer or is the compressed space all taken up by the spring?
No need, if you don't buy the springs posted into the op of that other thread (forget who the post is by, but it has a link to the springs and a tutorial) for $4 (for three of them) you could probably find then locally for a dollar or so from various hardware store or hobby shops. Making a spacer may just be a lot of work for nothing better than a new spring. Even if you have something lying around that was near perfect it just wouldn't be worth the hassel

problem is im not in the states, and I used to be an Airsoft tech before i went back to college so i know exactly how expensive(and getting quality parts is trouble too) getting the springs are gonna be(after conversion about $20 which is way too much for springs) for the same reason I don't use ebay so if I could send someone trustworthy the money for the parts and shipping I would be most grateful
So you don't live near a major city? I mean if you don't I get it, it may be hard to find the locally. So if you are going to rule out a local online seller too I guess you could make a spacer. You would need to trim the spring down smaller and spacer would need to be a cylinder shape (like the spring) and maybe 6-10mm long. Plastic or metal, or well any other hard material. This against the old spring may help, but may also not do a whole lot.
The only problem with all this is to find the proper material, if you got something lying around that seems close you could widdle it to shape, it just seems like a heck of a lot of work for a try and try again kinda project.

[Q] New VZ LG G2 - shows "Rooted" out of box?!?

Got my new LG G2 on Thursday - enjoying things so far, no complaints... Except I looked under status, and my phone says "Rooting status: Rooted"... Anyone else experience that?
I haven't tried to do anything to it (yet), aside from accepting the OTA update... The only other curveball so far was that activation took awhile, the SIM it came with didn't match the order paperwork, and I had to figure that out for myself...
Looking for everyone's thoughts and/or guidance about what to do... On the one hand, I might root it myself once I am certain I am keeping it. On the other hand, I am worried what would happen if the phone develops issues and I needed to return it or whatnot..
Send it back asap and tell then the phone is used and how you know it's used.

Did your phone have all the plastic on it when you unboxed it? Should have been 2 on the metal outer ring. One around the camera. One over the back buttons. Front.back. and bottom of back. (Last one is some type of retail sticker or something. Didn't really read it. Just ripped it off and threw it out)

Sure didn't look like a restock. Had all the plastic: front, back, 2x along the sides, camera, buttons... I ordered it online and it was shipped to me; wouldn't that reduce chances it was a restock, or am i missing something...?

hmm. maybe they are preping a pre-rooted one for vzw? LOL ... who am i kidding. they would never do that.
Just after the phone was released, someone else posted that their phone said that it was rooted as well. If you're going to root anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. If not, you may want to exchange it (unless you want to revert to stock yourself - there's a thread that tells how to do that too).
Edit: here's the thread I was talking about. Read from post #20.
