Is this Tmobile's doing? - Nexus S General

I went to download my first podcast today. It's about 25 MB and it's taking like 10 minutes to download. I tried a diff. podcast from a diff. site and the same slowness. I have full signal strength. Does Tmobile have some kind of restriction to speeds of downloading?

It's my first 3G enabled device so it's hard to say, but it seems like the internet is bit slow to me.. It takes quite some time to open full site like xda, for example. I don't know if that's normal, so that's my question.
I want to exchange it before 30 days if this is a problem.. but it seems like the internet is not up to speed.

web pages and everything is quick and snappy. faster than when i had sprints 3g. it's only when i download something such as a podcast.

You shouldn't be getting limited. Grab the speed test app off the market and see what it measures your speed at. I get 3-5 mbit at my home most of the time, sometimes faster, and I've never experienced a speed limit when downloading a file.

I got Download: 217kbps Upload: 59 kbps with speedtest.net.
With other units I got: Download: 0.15Mbps and Upload: 0.10
I have 4 full bars for signal.
I tried this with my Virgin Mobile Intercept and I got Download: 1.02 Mbps and Upload: 0.17 Mbps
Something is definitely wrong. I am running Trinity Kernel with CM7 rom. Would this problem be with my phone or with TMobile?

NAND it and then go back to stock to see if it changes, that would be my suggestion.

You have 4 full bars, but do you have the 3G icon displaying? Is it green?
Your speeds sound like you're stuck on EDGE.
Perhaps try cycling the 2G only setting on and off...

do a speed test and see what you are getting.

Out of interest are you in the uk? As I know T-Mobile restricted there data speeds for those that brought the nexus s form a third party seller like the carphone warehouse.

This is true, but does this include the Nexus S, if it does include the NS then that is disgusting because the NS is only available from Carphone Warehouse in the UK, you can't get the NS directly from T-Mobile UK or any carrier for that matter as it is sold as unlocked and unbranded, so we have no other choice but to buy from a third party like Carphone Warehouse.

I know some people had to call T-Mobile when they got there phone because of slow internet speeds, something to do with the wrong data plan code.

Actually I had the exact same issue. I never check that setting so when my phone wouldn't switch off edge I took it into T-Mobile. Must say I felt very intelligent.

I agree its rubbish as they only sell through third party places. I had to call tmobile and complain about the data speed, they said that because I was not on the web and walk plus package that comes as standered with their Android phones when brought direct from them I would get a cap on my data.
The web and walk plan is am extra 5 quid a month but if you complain and make a point you use a lot of data, its the reason you use tmobile ect..... they sometimes upgrade you for free.
It took about 20 mins on the phone them but I managed it in the end.

Glad to see it was a simple fix. Sometimes we all forget to check the easy things as the first steps in troubleshooting!

I recently switched from ATT. Before I switched, I had my Dell streak and Nexus S both active. Every speed test I did, Tmobile blew away ATT, sometimes by almost 1mbs. There were even instances where I had less bars on the Nexus, and it still beat the Streak, which was on ATT.

Slow Internet Performance

Searched the forum, but didn't see a similar issue to mine.
Phone: T-Mobile N1
Stock, not-rooted, FRF91
Got the phone about 3-4 weeks ago, and it was rock solid up until 3-4 hours ago.
Since then the internet has been super crappy. Thats odd considering I've run speedtests in this same location that average about 3.1 Mb down, and I'm also at 4 bars of 3G.
Texting seems to work fine, though sending messages is also taking longer than normal.
Rebooted the phone several times, took the battery out a couple times. I'm fairly sure its not T-Mobile, since other people near me aren't having problems.
Any thoughts?
You hit your 'fair use' data limit and t-mob have throttled your data connection?

Nah it wasn't that, I barely break over a gig a month. It seems something was up with the cell tower. Once I left work, everything was fine. Though it was weird no one else seemed to be having issues.
Problem solved lol.
Dude I'm getting the exact same issue over here in Moreno valley California! Wtf. I guess their testing stuff out things with the hspda + to make it official ... I went form 3mb to 512kbps

At some points I couldn't pull any data. Tested -0 in dl/ul on the Speedtest App, lol,
I've been getting the same problem in nj just outside nyc. I used to get pretty fast 3g but two weeks ago it really slowed down.

It doesn't sound like a phone problem, more like carrier problem.
I am also having this same problem. Live in suburb of Boston and we are just about ready to turn on the HSPA+ network from T-Mobile. I figured this was due to all the work on the local towers in my area. Come on T-Mobile please just flip the switch.

3g Speed Issue

Well 3g has always been slow about my area but T-Mobile just opened up HSPA+ in my town but I still get crappy speeds. I just ran a test right now with the speedtest.net app and the results are 0.23mbps d/l - 0.34mbps u/l with full bars of 3g. I think the best I have every seen was 0.96mbps d/l - 1.03 u/l.
I'm running CM6.1 nightly and was running froyo radio but changed to the new Korea radio to see if it helped but nothing. A while back while driving through Philly I hit 5.08mbps d/l - 2.88mbps u/l on the HSPA+ network.
I have played around with the build.prop and just can't find a setting for the speeds I "think" I should be getting. Does anyone have any suggestions? I was thinking about going back to OTA Froyo from Google to see if that helps.
It seems to me it depends on where I am at, at home I get decent speeds, at my dads which is like 5 miles away I barely get edge, St work speeds are ok, and my friends house I have crazy awesome speed...T-Mobile signal strength is some what lacking depending on your location...inside of a building I could get edge, but if I go outside I get full 3g...

Well I contacted T-Mobile an apparently I am on the "Smart Phone Data Plan" and should be on the "Android Data Plan". I didn't know there was a difference but they said there was and to give it 3 hours and it should help with the speeds. I personally doubt it since people are getting great speeds from Web2Go and t-zone plans.
They also suggested I upgrade (for free) my sim card to a 3G(UICC) SIM card. So I guess I am heading to T-Mobile after work to upgrade.
Again I doubt any of this will fix my issues as I have hit 5.08mbps in Philly with this sim card and data plan.
It's their network I go through the same thing where I live

Ok well the results after 3 hours of waiting.. I just did a speed test and got... 0.09mbps d/l and 0.47mbps u/l average after 4 tests. I'm pretty sure I get better speeds on EDGE. Needless to say I am heading up to T-Mobile after work to have a talk with them. This is crazy. Why pay for a data plan if it's going to be this slow.
Wow look at these blazing speeds..
Maybe this will help

I was having speed issues also, so I edited my build.prop and now my speed is blazing fast. I'm a happy camper. I'm using evil's NXsense 1.26, before that cyanogenmod 6.1 RC1, I was having serious market issues, I couldn't install or uninstall apps with cyanogen. I edited the build.prop and things improved but not much, I would have to keep canceling download, and then reboot to install. I edited build.prop on evil's NXsense, and did a couple of speed test, I didn't have to because I noticed improvement right away. I just wanted to see some numbers, so I took three, one indoors, outdoors and with wi-fi. It doesn't matter if I can get 4G speed I'm happy with what I got, I have copies if my edited build.prop, I'm not sure if I can post it without the devs consent, a respect thing, you know. It's like a real gray area, but if you want to try and see if it helps, PM me
Well with the new sim card and new rom IM getting 2.48mbps down now. Not sure why cm6.1 was so slow but it was.

Should not be a data cap on speed, just bandwidth. 5Gb per billing cycle.
Edit: Lucky, I only get about 3Mbs on Wi-Fi and I am paying my cable company for 5Mbs. On cell the my worst is 190Kbs, but my best is only 761Kbs -and that only happened once. The other six times I tested over the last three months it was right at 200Kbs
^ What he said. Never heard of a speed cap. That would blow. I saw just about 6mbps yesterday in a good area so I know its not capped at 4.9.
The data cap however is 5GB/mo, and I am throttled to 0.06mbps on my regular tmo APN as a result of going over. Thankfully we have a workaround for the throttle using a different tmo APN.
Cap or hardware limitation? The highest I've personally seen on mine is 6.02 down. I'm pretty sure the hardware limitation is about 7

The Samsung Vibrant has a maximum network speed of 7.2Mbps. Which is the equivalent of like 800-900 kb/s actual download speed. I live in Tacoma, Washington and my speedtest is usually around 6 or so Mbps. So even without the "4G" it's still damn fast. Considering most home internet connections are around 2.7-4.2 Mbps.

How do you figure?
The only thing I can figure is that you are confusing Kilo Bits per second with Kilo Bytes per second and failing to use the correct labels to differentiate between them. A Byte is 8 Bits so 7.2Kbs is 900KBs, however you stated Mbs which still puts you off by 1000bps. That is a full Meg per second off and 5 X more than I get over the air just in your error margin.
14Mb per sec on wifi...
I have 20Mb service at home and the fastest that my vibrant will download at is 14.4Mb
On 3G the fastest i've hit was a little over 5Mb. It's funny that my 3G phone is almost as fast as Verizon's 4G which they're showing as 7Mb. Verizon's 3G on my DroidX has never hit speeds over 1Mb. Sad. My 3G phone is as fast as Sprints 4G. Lol.

Nah I think he's right. 7.2 Mb's = .09MB (almost 1MB per second) 1Mb = 1/8MB so he was right when he said 900KB although he put kb (lowercase)
For instance at home on my 20Mb connection I can only really download at 2.5MB's per second.
**edit** looks like VZW's LTE should be able to hit 42Mb's but no phone out right now will come anywhere near those speeds.
I love how this has turned into a nerdier version of the "their/there/they're" argument.
That being said, technically the k should be lower case, not uppercase.

Where do you live in Tacoma where you actually get hspa+? I'm in University Place and I have to go up to Renton to get hspa+ service. Then again I've been out of town for about 2 weeks. Upload Speed: 2238 kbps (279.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Download Speed: 23522 kbps (2940.3 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 2262 kbps (282.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
I have 35/35 FiOS at home, I see 43/38 on my pc and 20/12 to my vibrant connected via wifi to a ubiquiti nanostation loco m 2.4 n 2x2 mimo. Those speeds are in megabits. I used speedtest.net on pc, and their app on my phone. Im in the philadelphia area and I choose the washington dc.test server. I also use pf altq(hfsc) on my firewall for QoS fwiw.

Caldwell, yes Cable One. Are you one of their fiber customers? That is not available out here yet. The only other time I have seen Cable one offer 10Mb was to business customers, and that is a totally different subsidiarity of Cable One.
Edit: I just checked their packages and it looks like they have changed them. Still, if they can't provide my full rate now I would just be paying more for the same connection. I am in an old bundle.

yeah, it's just updated and doesn't cost much more, same modem and everything i just called and upgraded. then i wasn't getting much for improved speeds so i called them and evidently the line to my house somehow got mangled so they replaced it (free). i'd call them and ***** if you aren't getting your speeds because i almost always get full 10 down regardless of peak hours.
but sadly qwest is cheaper and faster, but where i live (sw boise) qwest doesn't even offer service so cableone is my only non-dialup/non-clear option. but cableone hasn't been too bad, for internet at least, tv and customer service is a whole other issue. lol.

SLOW 3/4G DATA SPEEDS bell i9100m

just picked up my new phone, however 3/4g data speeds are crap. speed tests come out at less then impressive (when i can do them) but real world performance is far bellow what the speed test says. i am pulling about 1Mb/s down and about 1Mb/s up (usually less but im rounding), now the fun part, if i try to pull up a website, it is slow as hell or times out. google market also times out 70% of the time. downloading a 1mb app can take upwards of 7 minutes as it pauses while doing this, facebook app usually times out or works for a few minutes and then stops receiving data. all this said, my battery died at noon today because my phone was constantly trying to sync with gmail, FB, google+, etc. if i watch the data activity icon it looks as if my phone repeatedly sends off requests but does not receive data back. i have seen that some at&t users with an unlocked i9100 are also having the same issues, but they seem to mainly be a apn issue. others are using root explorer to change some config files. am i alone? is my phone defective? or is this just my new galaxy s2 ruined by bell?

I did not have any of those issues so I think you have a dud.
Take it back before you start trying other fixes etc as that's what the return period is for.
I've used it since yesterday (Thur/21) and didn't notice any issues/problems with WiFi, or HSPA+ speeds.
Hrm... mind you I didn't actually use it on Bell, could be their network.
As soon as I got the sucker I rooted / unlocked so I could pop my Rogers SIM in there and it's fine on Rogers.
Actually there is one thing you could check before you return.
Do a *#0011* and make sure your WCDMA says 850 Band 5, if it says 1900 it will be as slow as *[email protected](.
How is it that you change it to 850?
My baseband version changed to XXKG2 when it was originally UMKG2. This is probably why I'm showing as 1900 band when I do *#0011#*.
I'll have to wait for someone to post the UMKG2 modem file.
Could be Bells network. I thought maybe the custom ROM I am currently using was to blame but I am experiencing everything you are with my sgs1 and have been for about a week now. I'm in Calgary.
Edit : Also I get the best speeds on 1900, 850 is only useful out in the mountains here.

Dude you do realise that this is quadband GSM and quadband hspda phone. This means if you are on 1900 currently blame your provider or maybe you screwed band selection which is easily corrected. I usually turn off euro GSM and 3g frequencies and leave only our 850 and 1900 bands to save battery so it does not keep searching for 2100 for example.

ok, i am running on the 850 band 5. i did notice a slowdown on my sgs previously but not the timeouts/drop data connections/etc. i just finished a factory reset and lost all mobile net access for about 2 hours but have it back now (kinda). popped my sim out and back into my sgs and am having similar problems with the sgs but not as severe. i guess i can chalk it down to network issues that started up within 5 hours after buying the new phone. talked to the place of purchase and they are saying the network is loaded do to "rib fest" which in all reality only pulls maybe 1k to 2k of people that are already up here cottaging so i have trouble with there theory that the local towers are loaded as really its only one tower thats loaded more than normal. love the phone, wifi speeds and page rendering is retarded fast. i was watching a 720p video streaming from vimeo through the phone and scrolling around the page, it stayed smooth as butter. i just want my mobile internet to work. past that, when i have been able to do a speed test i have got no more than 2Mb/s, a far cry from what the technology can do. I hate you bell!
I have by Bell Galaxy S 2 running with telus, I am getting between 2-4 mbps download, and 1-3 mbps on upload. I an only getting up to maybe 1mbps on wifi, download or upload. I am using a 2.3.4 custom Darky Rom.
I'm getting 3 to 7mbps download on 4g and 1.5 to 4mps upload. Purchased from bell. On bell network.
On my home wifi 16mbps to 19mbps down, 1mbps up right next to the router.
I am using KF3 modem(radio) and it has improved the speeds and reception.. slightly (5 to 10%) but i do find the wifi signal doesn't crap out anymore which as my problem.
Try KF3 modem, put the file on your phone and flash with CWM http://www.mediafire.com/?fnkld9swo6u99
keep in mind there is no official ROM for bell yet so if u flash custom roms you wont have warranty until stock firmware is released for it.
maybe u gusy are in low 4g coverage ares? im around the don mills and lawrence area in toronto.
first one is 4g, second is wifi
Its probably most likely bell. Its nothing but corporate ripoffs. If this was the U.K they would be out of business. I dont see anywhere near 2mbit in newfoundland either.
*#0011# showd 0 HSPA+ connections so im guessing either bell doesnt have hspa+ here or bell has severely crippled the provisioning in favor of their internet sticks. But even then when a person pays nearly 60.00 a month for an up to 42mbit connection, it states that average is only something like 5 to 8mbit.
I share the same slowness and timeouts as you.

It seems they have bad coverage there. Why don't you get people in your area to sign a petition for Bell to install some antennas in the area and send it to Bell... worth a shot.
I am on Sasktel and the data on the Galaxy S II is quite poor. I have been getting aroud 2.5 Mbps Up and 2.5 Mbps Down max, this is including build.prop edits. I have tried KH3, KH1, KG3 and KG2 with KG3 yielding the best results. These numbers are about the same as my Nexus S but the Nexus S yielded much more consistant results.
2.7Mbps down and 1.5 up with KG6 on Telus
8 Mbps down & 1 Mbps up - On Virgin Mobile, HSPA+
Try flashing the KH3 modem using Odin, it's said to work extremely well on the Bell/Virgin network.
Just put the KE7 modem on my phone, pulled the best numbers I've got yet and I have tried MANY modems. 6012kbps up and 2633 down. Will continue to test and report back if there is a change. This is on Sasktel with a KH3 based rom.
Decent speeds for me in Guelph on Rogers.
*edit* After seeing some of the above posts maybe it's not so decent after all. Maybe I'll try some other firmwares for kicks.

upload your speedtest and network

I thought it would be cool to have a thread where everyone can brag about what their network speed is like.
It can also show people what type of speed they might be able to achieve if they get this phone
I am using tmobile in the U.S.
Here's mine:
I guess it's also handy to post our signal strength, since in the end that's the thing that makes these results vary.
Signal strength 102-108 dBm
I'll have to upload it later but I'm on AT&T GoPhone service and I pulled 62 dow and 17 up with full bars. I've never seen a phone go that fast before. I love this phone.

I'm using the US version. I was using the UK version but I wanted to try out the US version to see if it would have any impact on speed. So far it has.

Here is mine:
That LTE... I never use it though 3G (H+) is fast enough for my mobile internet needs...

I am on Tigo, Colombia, and these are the LTE results I got.
Verizon 4G LTE in South Brooklyn
I've had much better results in the past with this phone in this location, but that's what showed up just now...

Best part: it's 7x faster down, and 30x faster up, than my home broadband.
Best-er part: Only 1GB of data a month.
My broadband is 10 mbps
9 GB of data and can raise it to 100

Dang. I can relate: mine's somewhere between 8 and 12mbit/s down, and somewhere between 800k and 1mbit/s up... Though, any uploading will render the down-stream almost unusable. Say I want to upload a video and idly browse websites while I wait, or play an online game, even one as light on traffic as a super quiet Minecraft server... not happening. Latency is through the roof until the upload's done. :/
On the plus side, it's unlimited, so I've got that going for me which is nice. I've still been tempted to use my phone's 4G to quickly upload things, though. :I
