[Help] Did I Brick My Mytouch4g? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

MODS: I am unsure of where to post this so sorry for the trouble.
So I work for Tmobile and love showing off my rooted mytouch 4g in all its glory.
So I requested a warranty exchange and got a TAIWAN VERSION w/ GOOD SCREEN in return. Like Day and Night.
Upon Receiving my warranty exchange phone it was 2.2.1. I attempted the same Visionary Root Process, (however was there some extra file i needed to DL? i forget)
After rooting my new phone, S-Off, I had flashed FAUX stock kernel 0.4.0b.
THEN THIS HAPPENS:
I cant get past the mytouch 4g splash screen. The first logo that appears. It gets stuck or bootloops. I can HBOOT and get into recovery 3.0.0.5
This is all i can do...i already asked for another warranty exchange...but in the meanwhile..how can i fix this problem or what did i do wrong?
ALSO can you backup one mytouch 4g and load it back up on another mytouch 4g with the same sd card? Thanks!

I had this problem with my MT4G when I flashed his kernal. It seems that his kernals are not designed to work with every 4g device. I hope you did a nandroid backup on the device. I was never able to get past the mytouch splash screen with his kernals

Well, at since you can get into recovery there should be a number of things you can do to get your phone to boot.

Download a new ROM to flash, if you are on clockwork 3 then you need CM7.
Clockwork has usb drive ability, turn it on, transfer the ROM then flash.

If you can get into HBoot or Recovery on ANY phone, you're safe. Hell, if you can't get into HBoot, your phone wouldn't even start up since HBoot is basically the equivalent to BIOS.

THE VERSION OF CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY YOU USE IS CRITICAL!!!
The version you are using is for Android 2.3 only.
Flash a v2 Recovery with adb or fastboot and reinstall your kernel, or install CM7.

I am trying to do this. How would I get my comp.to.recognize the devise. Sometimes it says mass storage device detected sometimes not. So I need cm7 rom to b able.to boot?

If you've ever connected it via USB, it should have installed the drivers automatically (at least on Windows). I think the ADB driver only installs if you had "USB Debugging" checked. Mass Storage usually only refers to mounting the SD card; the driver for ADB is different. Look for something like Android Phone or Android ADB Interface in your device manager (again assuming Windows).
If you have ADB set up, try running the adb devices command. If it spits back the serial number of your phone, you should be okay to proceed.

Don't exchange the phone, fix it...
Just use another phone to copy the latest CM7 to the root of your sdcard and flash, if that doesn't work do the same thing with a PD15IMG.zip file to the root of your sdcard, hboot and restore to stock.
I have no problem with someone doing a warranty exchange for a hardware issue, but if you break your phone, don't make someone else pay for it...

i ended up solving the problem by doing what some of you had suggested. I flashed CM7 and WAH-LaH! when the phone got past the splash screen into CM7 i was on cloud 9.
Now What are the benefits of running CM7? as opposed to going back to Sense w/ Faux kernel again?
PLUS
how would i go back to a sense type rom again? would i go back into rom manager and flash a different recovery?
XDA you have been so helpful!
___bonus__also the haptic feedback on this phone was not as strong as my original..though idk if its just me or not..should i call tmobile and stop shipment of the OTHER phone? how is it i have a taiwan version plum W/ good screen?

There are no Sense-based Gingerbread (Android 2.3) ROMs available now ... Best practice its to make a Nandroid backup of CM7 with your installed CWM Recovery, then flash a version 2.x of CWM Recovery to install any Froyo (Android 2.2) based ROM.

Good to see it is working.
Its mostly personal preference at this point. Sense on the MT4G is pretty responsive and has some nice features. CM7 has its own tweaks and features. You loose the sense widgets but many can be replaced with alternatives in the market. You gain and loose relative in both ROMs So try out both and decide.
Use ROM Manager app to flash a new recovery. One of the 2. versions, then flash a froyo based ROM.

what about flashing kernels..are those "roms"
is cm7 itself pretty battery efficient? i still downloaded setcpu and set it to 11---.
2.XXX ..u mean like 2.5.1.4 for example..sorry not lookin at the phone atm.
++bonus
i also dl the cynogyn updater or wut not..wut url do i add for themes?

Kernels are not ROMs, the kernel is the underlying software of an OS. The kernel talks to the hardware and lets different parts of the OS communicate. Kernels are ROM specific, or Framework specific. A sense ROM can not use a AOSP kernel and vice versa.
CM ROMs can be good on battery, or not. It all depends on personal use and how you set it up.
That is a good recovery to use when flashing sense ROMs.
Not sure about the updater. If it is the one I am thinking, it hasn't been updated in a while. I think it has been abandoned in favor of ROM Manager. CM updater did come in some of his older ROMs, before ROM manager became the norm.

So I can or cannot flash fauxs kernel. I really liked the smartass profile. Also..I'm on cm 7 now...y do I get force closes on my market.

As people have already said, you used the wrong version of clockwork, also, use clockwork to flash a new rom. And make sure you use the right version.

Try fix permissions. If that does not work, do a full wipe (factory reset). If that still does not work, try re-flashing the ROM.
If you flashed a new kernel before you started having issues, this may fix it, or you may need to wipe caches and re-flash the kernel.

There's a sticky at the top of the forum that lists the custom ROMs and kernels available for the Epic.
I suggest you pick one and try it. If you like it keep it, if not, flash another.
You need to be rooted and you need custom recovery.
Via clockworkmod recovery, you can flash just a kernel to your stock ROM.
hope this helps
has anyone made a video on how to do it the right now on a EPIC? i tried it like 5 times with baby step step2 and it didnt work on DI18

you need to be rooted. you also need clockwork mod recovery.
then you can flash a different kernel
yeah i have all that and ive watched videos on how to do it on other phones but not on the epic it seems easy but when i do it my phone mess's up! i put the zip in the root of the SD card power the phone off and put into clockworkmod instill the zip and it bricked my phone every time. not sure if im doing it right. thats why im asking if theres a video on how to do.
Do One-click-root, clockwork recovery (both should be done from the computer via USB debug mode) then, power off your epic. Next, Hold Volume Down, Camera Button and Power Button until the clockwork recovery screen pops up(should be green text, not blue which is the stock recovery). If you have the custom kernel already in your SD card, go to Install Zip From Card > Choose Zip from SD Card > (Custom Kernel)
And there you have it.
To flash any rom, you do the same thing
dude i did all that and it doesnt work. it says everything was installed but when i reboot it, it doesnt go pass the samsung.com screen. what kernel works with stock rom DI18??
I've tried both Phoenix Kernel 1.49 as well as Xtreme kernel's 1.0 version. Both work fine. I think you need to flash back to stock rom via Odin and redo the process... you know how to do that right?
i havent changed my rom im using the one the phone comes with i just want a custom kernel thats all! ive reset my phone 5 times in the last 24 hours trying to get this to work! and nothing.
The process is very simple for flashing a new ROM/Kernal, and you seem to have the concept down. You could try restoring to factory, re-rooting through the one-click to ensure it goes through correctly, than try flashing a new kernal then.
Also i know for new roms the first boot takes a while, im not sure how it is for kernals. Also i noticed theres a few different kernals around here, some for 2.1 and some for 2.2. Make sure you are using ones compatible with 2.1 if you are on the stock rom!
yeah i did that i tried babystep and step2 and both didnt work. i dont want to give up! but im over reseting my phone.
Do you get any errors at any point?

Which kernels have you tried?

Its those kernels. I tried babystep and I too only see the samsung.com splash. Those kernels are probably optimized for baked snack. My guess is they dont play nice with the stock boot animation.

why stuck on modaco??

hello all, i recently installed clockwork3.0 to try out the cm7 rom and did so. afer that i wanted to go back to cm6 but decided to try out a custom baked modaco in between. I went no problems to the modaco vision rom and then tried to go back to the cm6 and thats where i ran into the problem. It seems as if though all i can flash and boot now is the modaco vision and desire roms. i try enomther and cm and after the flash and reboot im always stuck at the HTC boot screen which i know shouldnt be there and cant format boot in cwork3.0 without failure error. Even a nandroid back to cm6 wont work. Im assuming this has something to do with the modaco rom writing some apps to /system during install. If anyone can point out my error or explain why this could happen it would be greatly appreciated. Thanke, veritasaequita
You need to flash back to the old ClockworkMod Recovery using fastboot? You have done that haven't you? CWM Recovery 3 is only for 2.3 roms atm afaik.
Cool, thanks for the input bro. Yes I sure have. I did see in the dev forum a thread titled install cw3.0 easily from phone. Is it possible to go back to the old cw by way of using the phone also? Once again thanks for your help
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
oh yeah, indeed you have hit upon something. Try installing ROM manager via the Market,... then use that to re-install the old recovery.
But if that fails,... then yes, you SHOULD be able to use a Terminal Emulator to flash without using fastboot commands.

calm down take a breather us XDA users got your back, OK take out the battery and put it back in then go to the Hboot ( hold power and volume down) then once you get to the Hboot Settings use volume down to get to RECOVERY (i think its the third one) then once you get into Clockwork Recovery scroll down to (Backup and Restore) click then press (Restore) and then choose your Restore file it usually Year-month-day hope i helped you donate pls if i did
BE SURE TO KEEP THE CHARGER IN!!
p.s. if it turns off while its restoring even with the charger in let it boot into recovery mode and let it charge up a bit
incase you still need help gtalk me [email protected]
and p.s. CWM 3.0.0.5 is for gingerbread only
Certain roms require certain versions of clockworkmod. I don't know if this also applies to restoring from backups, though. Which type of rom did you flash?
If he flashed the add on 3.0.0.5 has ext3/ext4 support. Should be able to flash froyo and TB Rome.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
3.0.0.6 supports ext3/ex4 3.0.0.5 only does Gingerbread
Edit: I'm being a dumbass yea what he said was right I'm overly tired and I have to explain to her why I was being a dumbass and trying to flash through fastboot but what I don't understand is why its still stuck at the boot screen

Three options
Option one: (easiest)
Since you flashed 3.0.0.5 you must flash a Gingerbread ROM, (Which you can download from here ). Make sure to flash the G/apps after you flash the ROM.
Option two:
you can flash a 2.x.x.x Recovery image, or flash 3.0.0.6 via script or manually do it via the HBoot.
Option three:
Flash the PD15IMG and start over from ground one.
thank you so much for the advice and help. i could bang my head on the wall for trying to load gorillasens. i shouldve left it alone. once i get home from work i will give it a try again.

Ah. i think i see what happened. You rooted your phone. downloaded Clockwork Rom Manager, then flashed a recovery image (which was version 3.x). then tried to flash a 2.2 ROM.
Okay. so what.....
a common mistake but one that can be avoided by doing a little research.
Clockwork's 3.0.0.5 recovery image is only compatible with Gingerbread (2.3) based ROMs.
Clockwork's 2.x recovery image are only compatible with FroYo (2.2) based ROMs.
gorilla is 2.2 So it's not cannot be flashed by the recovery image you are using.
if that is correct then the text in the recovery image should be orange in color. If that is correct.....If i were in your shoes i'd load CM7 w/ the GAPPS > download CWRM from the markert > scroll to the bottom (all clockwork recoveries) and flash the newest 2.x. then boot into recovery / make sure the text is GREEN, not ORANGE, wipe then flash your GorillaSense.
Can you cite a source, because I've also heard people claim that Clockwork 3 is backwards compatible, but there was no evidence either way...?
How would you go about switching from a 2.2 ROM to a 2.3 ROM? Do you have to backup with CWM 2, then install CWM 3 to install the new ROM? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me...?

3.0.0.5 is not backwards compatible, which is the official 3.x that you download via the Application. 3.0.0.6 which is "beta" flashed via the HBoot is backwards compatible.
It's seriously jacked if you ask me.
to go from lets say CM6 > CM7 one would do a nandroid backup of CM6, then go to CWRM flash the 3.0.0.5 recovery image > boot into recovery and flash the CM7.
now to get back to a 2.2 ROM you have to scroll to the bottom of CWRM app's and flash a 2.x version of the recovery then do your nandroid restore, flash the 2.2 recovery image.
From what i've heard once 3.0.0.6 is finished you can use that for everything.
What a pain...
I'm real sketchy about the Clockwork 3 recoveries for the Nexus, because they've been screwing up partitions (mine included). Has there been any problems with Clockwork 3 on the Glacier?

I haven't had any problems with mine. The only problem that was noted was the 3.0.0.5 prior to the official release wouldn't do Nandroid Backups directly from the application. Some were reporting it work work from the recovery image, but mine never did.
and i have a feeling the reason it's screwing with Partitions is this (CM7/CW3.x) is a Ext4 set up. And CM6/CW2.x is a Ext3 set up.
but since it went official the only problem i've seen is people flashing the the wrong recovery for the wrong ROM. People are flashing 3.x because 3 is higher than 2 so they think it's an upgrade and have no clue on the who/what/when/wheres and whys of what its for.
The partition thing is different for the Nexus, because they are cross compatible to a certain degree. I rolled back to CWM 2, but I can still flash CM7 no probs...
It's interesting to note the differences between the two platforms though (Nexus vs Glacier).

Yea between Google's way of doing thing and HTC, but i'm sure the chip-set has something to do with that. and with the sexy nexi only having 512Mb of memory the factor of tricking the phone to use the SD card has something to do with it i'm sure.
i have the 3.x recovery and i can flash iceglacier which is a 2.2 rom with out any issues. what i can't do is restore my backup from my other phone onto this replacement i just got. i made the backup with the 3.x recovery but i just keep getting stuck at the mytouch bootup screen... gonna try flashing the 2.x recovery and see if it lets me do the restore.
hey there everyone. just giving an update.......phone is still messed up. we tried putting gingerbread on and no go....tried flashing to PD15IMG and starting over. no go, it kept saying that "main version older <bad>" the phone wont go past the htc screen. im going on day 3 and no phone. *sigh* open for more advice. should i just buy another phone?

[Q] Non rooted Gingerbread Stock - Custom Revery Which one ??

Hi,
My warranty has just run out on my Nexus One so I've decided to unlock the bootloader.
My Aim is to get from stock non rooted Gingerbread to rooted Gingerbread with busybox, SU, and ultimately being able to boot into ubunto in chroot, I've been reading up on all this for a few days now but just need a small amount of help with Recovery, Gingerbread ROM choice, and the order that thing should be done, by someone who's done this before.
I take it the first thing is to install SDK and get The USB Driver working on PC, its running XP by the way.
Then I unlock the bootloader, !HELP! to do this do I enter hboot or fastboot, before connecting the phone to the PC? I have to copy 3 files somewhere and use ADB and run command for **** OEM unlock, can't remember the exact command, (I've got instructions for this) and then agree to void my warranty etc.
I then find and download the correct custom recovery image and copy this into the tools folder of the SDK. And install (got instructions for this to).
!HELP!
Which custom recovery image should I use? and which Rooted Gingerbread ROM is most popular ?
After installing the custom Recovery can I just flash a custom ROM? I've seen something about SU.zip mentioned, is this necessary?
If I can just flash a custom ROM, I do this by downloading and copying the custom ROM of choice to the root of my SD card. Start phone in recovery mode and install from SD? I then install the google add ons .zip (if required) using the same method.
Sorry for such a long post and so many questions but I can find all the information for what I'd like to achieve but not in one place and nowhere in any chronological order.
Any advice appreciated .
Please read the Wiki, "Root" guides, "Unlock bootloader and install custom ROM" thread. Execute until the point of installing custom ROM.
Look in "Recovery" section for recoveries, install the latest Amon_RA.

Good show with unlocking the bootloader, it's the best way.
However... looking at your flag, you're in the UK... this means your phone is still in warranty, as we get 24 months.

My understanding was 12 months but, your probably right. I've unlocked the bootloader now and fortunately my N1 is in good condition, funtioning correctly ( well at least for now, I'll have to cross that bridge if and when I get to it )
Getting on to custom recovery, I realised something wasn't quite right after my first attempt. I installed custom recovery but without su.zip on my SD card. I managed after rebooting my PC to complete the custom recovery with su.zip on the SD card and was successful in that I've got SU on my N1. However I am quite sure I do need to fix something with the recovery, can someone explain what method or how I do this now. I've unlocked the bootloader, I am rooted with gingerbread but with a dodgy recovery.
Or do I do exactly the same as I did with su.zip and push recovery from ADB and flash from SD card, making sure that fix-recovery.zip is indeed on the SD card.
Hope this makes sence?
Any help appreciated.
After I unlocked my n1 I used rom manager for everything else, first flashing clockwork mod, then selecting a stable cm 7 build and flashing that, since then I've done everything through recovery, flashing custom kernels and nightlie builds, I'm currently using cm7 rc4 highly recommend rover theme too!

I think CM7 rc4 is next, I do want to get Linux up and running though, even if it's in a virtual environment (chroot). and deffinately would like to check some nice themes out, I've not even looked at themes yet, I suppose it's quite easy after unlocking bootloader, installing custom recovery then flashing su.zip though. But still any pointers where to start my quest wouldn't go a miss ;-)
Recovery
its safe to let rom manager flash clockwork, ive done it
I heared about amonRA but it seemed like clockworkmod was more commonly used so I went for that, but yeah it's fine to flash a new recovery, just remember that whilst it's rare things can go wrong, it's YOUR fault not anyone's here regardless of the advice you may get here if your phone gets bricked or screwed up.
That said I'm still new to this but I'm learning as I'm going, just remember to backup your phone using rom manager before doing anything major so that you can always recover your phone/rom.
I started out hacking my nokia 5800 so was keen to have a go with the android platform.

then i tested it with cyanogen7 build 711211 nightly, ruymanca v6 final, with buzz kernal 2.6.32,hcdr kernal v4.2 beta using install zip method. but i cand do it with sone zip like ovc jacob 2.6.32 v1 and some other zip( kernal overclocking zips) and also wild puzzle rom v.8, cwm saying some script error in which the support of these scripts have been removed since cwm changed its version to support gingerbread recoveries. so i cant do it from cwm 4.XXX. then i loaded cm7 and installed rommanager 4.3.2.4 premium. but rome manager always said to flash cwm , though i have the latest cwm in my phone. so i flashed once again with a cwm 2.5.0.7, and booted to recovery and tried to install the previously failed zips, this time cwm can do it with out any error. but after loading the flashed rom, i once again rebooted to recovery. and the cwm is again back to v4.0.14!!!!!!!!!! . what had i done?? previously i boot it into cwm 2.5.07 and now its back to 4.0.1.4!
now i want to get some help from u people..
Q1) why cant i downgrade cwm to 2.5, i dont really like cwm v4.xxx, coz i think there are some bugs in it, taking long time to do things and fix permission works rarely. but with v2.5 it is smooth, also support old scripts.
Q2) is there any advantage in using new cwm?
Q3) why rommanager cant detect the new cwm, saying to flash it with old cwm? the manual flash override function never worked for me!!!
Q4) is there any way to add support to old scripts to new cwm?or how can i do updates from that kind of zips?
Q4) is there any problems with mixing up(flashing) different kernals and roms? i know what is a rom, but know little about kernal.
Q5) what is the best radio update i can get, i need good network and a good battery life. i am not locked to any network, and i want 2 use different networks sim. if i flash a radio, will i be locked to any frequency?
pls help me in finding ans for these, as i am a newbe to android, my previous experience was with a x10 mini of my friend, which we flashed with cwm and rooted, all with the help of xda lessons. thanks to all who make xda the best.

1. On wildfire, flashing secondary recovery from rom manager is only temporary. That means it comes only when you reboot to recovery from the option in rom manager itself. Alternatively, you can boot into 4.x recovery and first install the update.zip (created by rom manager on the root of sdcard) which gives you temporary 2.x recovery to flash old files. That is not a bug in 4.x but amend scripting files (older) are not supported by 4.x recovery.
2. Yes there is. The most important is to get rid of the offline charging bug (apart from newer recoveries add new features.)
3. Rom manager can flash 2.x and 3.0.0.6 recoveries on sdcard (at the moment). However it can't replace the original recovery on wildfire. It can only flash and boot into a temporary recovery ( by reading from a file on sdcard).
4. Yes you can. The 2.x recovery can flash amend files only whereas 3.x or higher recovery can flash edify files only. There is an appliaction called "amend to edify converter". Google it.
--as far as you use wildfire kernels, I think there wont be any problem using them with any wildfire rom.
5. If your wildfire is A3333 one then flash the latest radio that ends with 20.10. You won't loose any frequency. But you will loose some frequency on flashing it if your wildfire is A3335 one.

how can i know if mine is a3333 or a3335?
thank u for such a fast reply buddy.
i searched xda and find most of my ans from a thread named "complete wildfire index". u people are so much supporting. no question why xda is the greatest android forum. thank u all
also xda apk is not working??? in my phone, it takes too much time to load!!!!!!!!.why is it so? i realy want it,so that i can stay tuned. ls help
Remove your battery cover and the battery. The model will be written just above your IMEI number there. Also, XDA App does indeed take a long time to load, especially for the first time, it's pretty normal I will assume.
For checking A3333 or A3335 see under the battery (ofcourse on the phone) or on the purchase box.
And regarding xda android app, verify that you have decent internet connection like atleast edge. And when opening app everytime, it takes lot of time because it loads all the forums by default. What I suggest is, open the app for 1st time, and login with your account. Then add your desired forums to "favourites". Then enter the app settings and set the default view to "favourites". From now it wont take that long time during app startup. I too use xda app from mobile always. Waiting for few more updates of it (like thank button and etc..).

Hey i flashed the latest radio,it workz like a cham. And i think it gives me more range(catches network signals more good)i assume so.is it right? And abt xda, lol i am in the track now, workz nice now.just i gave it some time 2 load.and every thing is ok.
Now i hav another question, what is the benifit of ext4 over ext3.i am now using ext3,with a2sd script, and moves almost all my app using app2sd to my sd,having 512mb ext3 and 64mb swap, i am using windows and so i cant realy partition sd to ext3,though i wish 2 have 1gb ext 3,i had done above partition using rom manager, and the max size it showed me is 512mb for my 8gb class 4 card, also what is the benifit of giveing more swap space?
I tried 2 move dalvic cache to sd, but it gave me frequent restarts, and phone behaves crazy when i remove the sd, so i avoided that, and reinstalled cm7 latest build and aplied a2sd script in it along with ram optimizing script, now itz fine. But i never find the support of a2sd script for wildfire in face book support page of the script developer, any body tried this in wildfire? 4 me i find no problem at all. Pls info me if it has any prblm.
