Does anyone know if the Sprint froyo upgrade via OTA will hit folks who upgraded in December to DK28?
If not, what should one do to get the OTA update? Or will there be a update.zip with a similar upgrade process used to get to DK28?
Thanks in advance.
Search around in the future, but the chances are slim. Just hold out until a rooted flashable update.zip is released on here (XDA). It will be a matter of a day or two, or maybe only hours considering how quickly it was up for DK28.
No, you will have to be on a 2.1 ROM (preferably DI18) to get the OTA
Sprints official policy is if you take a phone in with DK28 they will revert it to DI18..but you can do that yourself via Odin..

Do they void your warranty, or give you a ghetto pass on that one...?

is this at any sprint store? or what's the story on this?

I remember reading a thread on SDX a few months ago posted by a member who worked for Sprint. Basically it stated that Sprint had no written policy about rooting or custom ROMs. I will search for it and post a link when I find it.
I dont think they would do a downgrade service, I think the policy is if for any reason, like something not working, they first Odin to DI18, then fix? But they supposedly voided warranties for that... i think theres a gray area... but dont just take it there to be reverted... Odin is easier than rooting.... just read.

Many Sprint stores don't have the capability to revert your phone. It probably has to be a repair store.

Can you verify this claim? I don't know Sprint's official policy on bringing a leaked os to them. Logic would suggest that your warranty is immediately void if you present them with a phone that is clearly rooted and flashed with a leaked os, asking them to hook you up with the official os. Personally, I wouldn't think for one second about bringing my phone to a Sprint store without flashing a stock os beforehand.

Basically what it said was if anyone brings their phone in for a repair and it is running dk28 was to repair it like normal but flash it to di18 before giving it back to the customer, and no it wouldn't affect warranty. But that was just pertaining to stock dk28, now if you are running a custom rom based off of dk 28 or di18 for that matter then I'm pretty sure it voids your warranty

No, that's not what I'm talking about. I'm saying that at the time of the post I read on SDX, Sprint had NO official policy on rooting and custom ROMs(according to the company memo in the post). So they can't flag your account or void your warranty.
cops arent supposed to pinprick your ID to signify a 'troublemaker', but they did for years. Just use Odin... read, read, read... and none of this will be relevant.
I have TEP, and on my first epic, it developed a line of pixels across the bottom side (in landscape) of magenta pixels... bright as hell. A tech told me it was cosmetic, and would cost 35 bux... nowhere in the policy does it say anything about ANY cost with TEP other than the insurance deductable, I said WTF, went to another store, they ordered me a replacement right away... Just because theres no clear policy, does not mean they cant be a **** and tell you to walk... so I wouldn't chance it. Plus, if a bunch of people with DK28 phones came in they would get sick of it real fast. It does make sense though if you did that update.zip, the original, that they kind of should give you a pass, as nothing is hacked, and it came from google, you could just say you read an article with a link to download it. XDA what? SDX who??? Still... just use Odin. If Sprint is being soft on policy about DK28, save it for those who have no other recourse... dont ruin it...
Besides, OTHER than the AMAZING sprint techs on here, a lot of those people are clowns, I would trust Odin over them any day. Especially as Epic for example, their jobs are becoming easier and easier... less real repair, more modular replacement... lowering the bar for the gig... Maybe if they told me their XDA screen name, I would trust em...

Only one problem with using Odin to revert to 2.1: every time I do it, the accelerometer gets thrown out of whack and does not auto-rotate. This is an easy fix, although only if you are rooted. So you would have to Odin to stock, root, fix the screen rotation problem, and then un-root to receive the OTA update? Probably easier to just wait for the zip.
Or maybe the DI18 .tar I am using is messed up??
OK, if you can deal w/o the autorotate for a little bit, do it then update, as the update will wipe any settings you will make anyways. Sounds a lot like you should just wait for the special update.zip on XDA, then go from there.... would be a lot easier if you have to have a functional autorotate between Sun 11:59 PM and Noon the next day... because id bet by then, you will either have the download and be on Froyo, or it will be up here... do whatever is easiest for you. Im only going to DI18 if as soon as it gets on here, it gets rooted, EXT4'd, etc... too much... as long as theres a stock, with root only, version, I would like to try it... Im not sure I need deodexing, is that just for the themes that go over roms, or if its baked in than can it be odexed??? Just seen conflicting opinions on what to do. I really love the R&D done on here, and my phone has EXT4, but I would like to TRY the OG before it gets modified... just to see how stable it really is.... will effect how I feel about the delay a lot I think... If they put out a near 100% solid ROM (GPS fixed as stated, accelerometers, BT, any other actual function...). Still want a free USB>HDMI cable... John??? Ill blame sprint for everything....?

Good point. I have already reverted back to DI18 (as of last night) and rooted and fixed the rotate problem. I gotta say, dk28 was cool, but eclair absolutely flies on the epic...I forgot how fast it was (hoping and assuming the same will be true for eb13). I did this because I read somewhere that stock, rooted epics would be eligible for the OTA update, but now I'm not so sure. As you said, there is so much conflicting information out there!
But when all is said and done, I will probably just Odin again on Sunday night and wait and see what happens, both here and OTA. Waiting for devs to do their thing is probably the easiest, most pain free way of doing this.
yeah, as long as theres an untouched, well maybe just rooted version... as stated in another thread, may be a good idea to see what stock really looks like before the Devs break out the scalpels.

Stock rooted dg27 epics received the di07 and di18 ota without a problem, but they lost root after the fact. Not really an issue though.

I've taken my epic (running Bonsai) in to the Sprint repair store because the touch screen stopped responding accurately, they replaced the screen and gave me the phone back with all my data and ROM intact. Never even mentioned it...

Hello!
Just got my Epic 4G a few days ago and I'm already itching to root it, but I'm paranoid about the warranty. Sprint rep told me that they were anal about it and it would void it.
I used to have a Nexus One with T-Mobile and I was flashing new ROMs and kernels almost every day. I've always been a 'nerd' so I know what it all means and how to do it... but there's that lingering warranty in my mind. I was worried about it at first on my Nexus One, but eventually rooted and unlocked the bootloader even though I knew it meant the warranty went byebye.
Can someone offer me some piece of mind? Are these things easy to un-root? Is there any way that a Sprint tech could find out if it was ever rooted should I ever need to take advantage of the warranty?
I'll be honest with you, I'm not sure if it's worth it. I am not going to flash custom ROMs (yes, I miss FroYo, but I'm content)... the only reason I'm interested in rooting is for things like AdFree, Juice Defender, and removing stock apps.
Thoughts?
99% of Sprint reps not only could never tell your phones been rooted without seeing a different boot screen, but don't even know what root is.

Nothing to worry about... If you have to take your phone back to the store just Odin back to stock and problem solve. Everything is on the Wiki.

exactly! I took my epic in back in November to complain about battery management issue I was having and to swap out for a new one. I told the rep what a bummer it was that I had to re-install all my apps and he said
"naw man, you can just save everything on your sd card no problem. that's what its there for!"
to which I replied, "only on froyo, and only if you install the leaked dk28 build"
rep:
Yeah they don't even know.if a phone is rooted or not. Besides just like people aid previously just use Odin and it.flashes it.back to stock. Its a lifesaver sometimes.

Some older phones used to have flash counters, and I don't know if the epic has one. Typically they are buried deep in inaccessible areas and I doubt that any sprint store would have the wherewithal to get at it. I'm sure that Samsung could probably tell, but when Sprint sends them back they just throw them in a big box. The point of accountability is at the store where you exchange for another one. So either odin back to stock or short out the hardware and sprint will be none the wiser.

Yeah, there is actually a code that you can bring up to see if the phone is a refurb'd or not. I did that on mine and it was definately new.

I did too and with the code check it shows new but hey do you believe that I don't cuz if we can make the phone looks unrooted with Odin they can make their own phone to appear as brand new.

So I went to the sprint store today cuz my battery took a ****. The repair guy was telling everyone not to run the OTA update to 2.2, apparently it's bricking phones and breaking camera. He said Sprint will have their own update in a couple weeks. I lol'd as I walked out with my deodexed rooted EB13...
well that would probably explain why my wife hasnt received the update.. oh well.. I already updated with the zip files as well.

Damn it booiii...more dissapointment...and after such a long and druamatic wait for the release...smh, will the corrected version be another rolled out OTA or will they release it on the samsung website?
Loving the official 2.2. 12hrs unplugged so far and 60% battery left. Usually my exchange email kills it during the day since the tower is overloaded downtown with awesome 20-60 kilobit speeds. So my 3g radio gets a work out constantly trying to communicate.
Good job sprint smh

I did the same procedure twice to my epic and it worked great.

I'm skeptical that they are still rolling it out in force... My mom and sister have yet to get it. I'm just sitting on dk28 for a bot myself so I'm not sure how eb13 is actually performing... The forum posts don't make me particularly optimistic
i can believe it, it was a ***** for me to update my phone using odin and the eb13 tar, it just would not work, my phones screen kept turning a different color like purple or green then odin would just freeze. Tried another computer and was able to do it using the samsung .exe file and it wiped everything and i thought i was good, running real quick and snappy, but i opened the camera and went to record a video with it and as soon as i hit the button to switch to video i got an error saying the camera has crashed and it kicked me out :/ I thought, according to sprint, that we waited this long so they could iron out the bugs and make sure there was a release that was worth of releasing!
This official release is flawless for me. I did get the orange screen thou with the samsung tool, I just reran it and its 100 % flawless. Recorded vids with no issue.
could this be the EVO curse we were dreading?
Btw. Everyone owes a oppology to noobl. Remember he warned us about the leak dk28 bricking some phones? And some in here claimed the epic is unbrickable? Uhhuuu... Everyone... Form a single line and appologize.
I don't know how to prove that the phone was bricked, but it definitely was. It got stuck at param.lfs (or whatever that file extension is) in odin, so I retried it a few times, next thing I knew it would not turn on. He should be swapping it at the sprint store tommorow I think.

I was on DK28 and since I followed instructions correctly, my phone is still in working condition. HA!
That's misinformation from the store. Here's the deal with the update... Yes, it's still being pushed and all devices should have it by Friday. There have been some reports of issues with the camera and browser force closing but those are resolvable in most cases with a hard reset (sucks I know). I haven't seen any reports of a phone that was truly bricked, although custom roms will be more likely to have issues with the OTA update. I've personally updated 8 of these both OTA and with the Samsung installer and haven't had an issue with any of them after the update.
Currently looking for a custom rom though because I don't like some of the changes that were made. It does feel like the screen is a bit laggy after the update and I hate the new messaging app but overall no performance issues

lol. Me too. I used the 200mb samsung tool. No old odin with modified eb13 deodexed junk. Follow instructions nerds!
I'm not buying it. I know there are isues out there (myself included) but I would think if it was a serious problem we would have people on the forums saying it happened to them by now.
I updated my phone via the Samsung .exe file which I knew would wipe my phone which wasn't a problem for me since I use gmail to keep records of my contacts, call logs / sms (using sms backp+) and etc. So no worries there. I did get a little miffed about losing the apps but that is expected for a phone wipe.
There are few quirks and some changes in the GUI I didn't like. Big issue is the stupid SMS client they had to change so will be looking for a altnative version for it. No big deal but why change something when it works in DI18??
Screen rotation lag is fixable via screen calibration (posted elsewhere in this forums).
Least now the Devs have the source code they should be coming out with some nice ROMs soon. Rumored for Sprint to come out with an update in a couple of weeks? Not worried about it, by then most of us will be on custom ROMs anyway.

flashing kills the balls out of the battery. i have had a fully charged battery die in half an hour running odin multiple times trying things out. id bet almost anything that if you had an external charger to throw your battery in for a bit the phone would boot in to download mode with no problems.
While searching through some sprint forums, I came across the admin stating this about those who have EB13:
The official Sprint OTA update is for devices on EB13 and will update your device to EC05. You should receive it by midnight CST.
I know people might think this is crap, but the one thing the admin gave away is the TIME ZONE. Now we know the time zone to base it on to see if it will come true.
Just a thought to get people a little more hopeful.

I mean, my statement is just a theory, of course, based on a Sprint Admin (the one who actually posted the info all about the new update on the Sprint forums), so I'm taking his word for it.
Also, it being CST makes sense since the Sprint Headquarters is in the Midwest. (I think)
That being said, I think that confirms that the update is being run by Sprint, not the Google servers, like some had suggested.

For those who don't live in the Midwest, it is currently 9:00.
Only 3 more hours until we all get EC05, or Sprint had lied
Edit: Holy crap, I think I might be getting it right now O_O

Edit2: False Alarm... (no shocker really)

Alright, well:
1. You have to click "Update Firmware" and then the System Updates section will show it downloading.
2. It IS available; people on DI18 already have it. Sprint claims EB13 will get it too. Maybe not today, but one can only hope right?
Look, the best way to look at a situation like this is to be optimistic, and that is what I am attempting to do. Sure I might be wrong or get my hopes up, but sometimes the feeling of having the optimism is enough.
So please, don't just make statements like that. I know you weren't intending to bash me or anything, but having that negativity does not help.
Thanks

Agreed. I just checked three forums posted by Sprint admins that confirmed ALL SOFTWARE VERSIONS WILL BE UPGRADED TO EC05 BY END OF TODAY.
Now I agree with you that we may not get it TODAY, but we will get it EVENTUALLY. And @dbpaddler, I would but I have a Mac, and do not feel like wiping my data. Also, I do not want to do the Root method because if I root my phone I want to put ext4/cwm3 on it, not cwm2.5. (I realize I can update, but not worth the hassle in my opinion)
This was just posted today:
UPDATE 3/24/11
: Updates from older versions are now available via OTA. If you are on any of the previous releases (not including the leaked DK28 release), you will receive a notification to update...still following
up on whether these will be step releases (DG27 to DI07 to DI18, etc.) or if they will be from the old release directly to the current (for example, DG27 to EC05).

Can you site a source of your "facts" that specifically say there will be no update from EB13 to EC05, or should we just call this a vent (maybe even a troll) and end it here?
You people act like this would be the first time sprint said something that didn't come true. Hell, the Epic was coming with FROYO since November. It's only 4 months later, and they still aren't shipping froyo on the phones, and it came out in what, last may?
Facts? Yes, how about the FACT that it WAS stated that 18 and 13 were BOTH getting 05, then it changed it changed to 18 getting it, and 13 by 1am est, NOW it's changed to 3 previous getting the update? However, the FACT still stands, only 18 is getting 05. Everything I've posted is FACT, the only one inferred was that it's not coming tonight.

Agreed. I don't want this to be a back-and-forth argument.
However, if you can cite a source proving your statements, I would accept them and be on my way.
Edit: @NoSoMo, look, I understand why you're feeling like that. However, it is Samsung who is developing the software, not Sprint. Samsung develops, Sprint delivers. Besides, people already have EC05, which means Sprint ISN'T LYING.
We will get it in due time, and if we don't, then I would just odin to get it.
Please don't get angered by this; I don't want an argument. I agree with you; most likely we will not get it today. But I do believe we will within this week (Sunday, if we're that unlucky)

You state that it is not available (assumed currently), which is a fact as of this minute. You then make a very bold FACTUAL claim that it will not be available this week. I am asking you to site the source of this FACT. There are people that read this forum for FACTUAL information, and when you make a statement like that, it is going to freak people out, POSSIBLY FOR NO REASON.
If you would have said "and I bet it won't be available at all this week", or "watch it not be available at all this week", that is an opinion, and that is cool. You made a FACTUAL statement off of what DOCUMENTED FACT???
In the end you could very well be right, but not because of fact, but because you took a chance and got lucky, I am just asking you to take a little responsibility in what you post on forums, especially about such a hot topic.

You bring out a good point Milkman, although a little too argumental (I'm trying to keep some tranquility here )
@NoSoMo, he's right. You are basing everything on opinion and past events that make you believe Sprint will not deliver their promise. An inference is fine, but please reword it so you don't say "facts".
Guys, look. I didn't want all of this to turn into an argument. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Please, I do not want a flame war. Can we all agree to drop this?
I just got tired of waiting so I went to Androidcentral and and used their rom and flashed from EB13 to EC05. It worked great and I didn't lose any data. http://forum.androidcentral.com/epi...ooted-cwm-v2-5-1-0-rfs-odexed.html#post761525

I'd do that if I could, but I have a mac and no availability to a PC as of now. Also, I would prefer to root my phone to ext4/cwm3 (I realize you can just update over it, but eh, I'm more comfortable with my own preferences)
I have given Sprint my phone to repair a blown speaker, and also gave Best Buy my phone for a couple days.
Both times phone was rooted, to Sprint it had a stock looking rom with superusers though etc, they didn't say anything.
Gave phone to Best Buy, with a Sense 3.0 rom on it, she even mentioned "This looks like my Evo3d" and i told her I was rooted and was running a sense3.0 rom etc etc and she was all "cool."
however i got my phone back from both places and they were refurbs and i obviously lost my roots.
Most recently I got my refurb phone with the 2.3 OTA so no root anymores.
I guess it depends on who you return it to, but on both of my occasions, both for the same reason, even at about the same time span...they didn't say anything negative or 'sorry we can't help you' etc.
Just bored on xda..no root is driving me nuts.

I tried opening the link inside the file, but it would not load for me.
What does it say in 20 words or less?

Rooted phone are covered under warranty and 100% OK by Sprint.
So, I wasted my time getting it back to stock to take it in for a blown speaker.
Awesome.
Thanks for the reply.

My friends phone was rooted and sprint forced an upgrage. He has the Sprint Evo 4G. It was rooted with Evervolv v1.1.0b3 (2.3.4). the HTC white screen kept repeating itself. I used my SD card to try to get the upgrade to complete but when it got to the system upgrade the second part progress bar was in red. It would never upgrade. Has anyone else experienced this problem. I saw your OTA upgrage prevents you rooting and I found it on my EVO. I liked rooting but is it now impossible to do. Any information that will help would be highly appreciated.

They swapped your phone for a blown speaker? They obviously didn't know what they were doing if that's all that was wrong with it. I'd suggest finding another service center.
So my epic was rooted. I was on the stock rom, just removed all the bloatware. I kept getting the google services framework force close and random reboots. I ODIN'd back to stock froyo ec05 (before the Gingerbread update came out) and it was still happening. I have TEP, so I figure I'll just bring it in to Sprint and maybe they can reflash it or something. I drop it off, they tell me to come back in 3 hours. I return and the girl brings out this piece of paper with some stats on it. She asks me if I have ever rooted my phone. I want to say no and play dumb, but it looks like I'm busted anyway. She shows me the sheet of paper, it says "version in:" and below that "version out:" She tells me this is how they can tell the phone has been rooted, it's blank next to one of them. She also tells me that because it's been rooted they can't do anything with it; no reflashing, no repairs, nothing. She tells me I can pay the $100 deductible and get a replacement but that's it. She also tells me her phone is rooted, and most of the employees there root their phones too. So I leave and reflash with ODIN once again. My problem seems to be resolved, but then I ran across this post.

According to Squishy, it sounds like they could have at least reflashed it. Is it at their discretion? Did they just not want to deal with it? Or maybe the policy has changed?
Has anyone else tried to bring a previously rooted phone in to Sprint and had this happen?
Crazy people. Good to know that they know.

Yea, it's at the individual stores discretion, based on how big of an ass the manager is, and that store's exchange attainment scores. Too many unnecessary exchanges, comes back to hurt a store's goals, so some manager's will institute policies as such, to give themselves leeway. Take it to another store, preferably not a corporate store.

after a fresh odin all root remnants are removed. The sprint rep was just stupid.

Before i got into flashing roms, themes, mods. The only thing i knew how to do was root. Before i even knew odin and this forum existed, i bricked my phone 2 times within a week.... Both times didn't know any better other then to take it the closest sprint repair store. Both times they replaced my phone which was rooted and bricked when I walked in....
Moral of my story- it's the stores discretion.
